VERDEJO - Aromas of Apple, pear, grapefruit (shell), passion fruit, lemon (peel), walnut, almond (bitter), ivy, pine nut * Spain

V VERDEJO

38 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

erdejo is a variety of wine grape that has long been grown in the Rueda region of Spain. The grape originated in North Africa, and was spread to Rueda in about the 11th Century, possibly by Mozarabs. Verdejo was generally used to make a strongly oxidized, Sherry-like wine. In the 1970s, the winemaking company Marqués de Riscal began to develop a fresher style of white wine based on Verdejo with the help of French oenologist Émile Peynaud. In 1980, white wines from the Rueda region were recognized by a Denominación de Origen (DO). Wines labeled Rueda must contain 50% Verdejo; the remainder is typically Sauvignon blanc or Macabeo. Wines designated “Rueda Verdejo” must contain 85% Verdejo, and are often 100% Verdejo.

T

annat is a red wine grape, historically grown in South West France in the Madiran AOC. The wine is notable for its very high tannin levels and is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc and Fer to soften the astringency and make it more approachable. In addition to Madiran, Tannat is also produced in IroulĂŠguy, Tursan and BĂŠarn, and it is a minor constituent of Cahors wine. Modern winemaking in the region has begun to emphasize the fruit more and use oak aging to help soften the tannins. Now the wines typically spend about 20 months in oak prior to release.

ewürztraminer (German: is an aromatic wine grape variety, used in white wines, and performs best in cooler climates. In English, it is sometimes referred to colloquially as Gewürz ; although this is never the case in German, because “Gewürz” means “herb” or “spice”), and in French it is written Gewurztraminer (without the Trema). Gewürztraminer is a variety with a pink to red skin colour, which makes it a “white wine grape” as opposed to the blue to blackskinned varieties commonly referred to as “red wine grapes”. The variety has high natural sugar and the wines are white and usually off-dry, with a flamboyant bouquet of lychees. Indeed, Gewürztraminer and lychees share the same aroma compounds. Dry Gewürztraminers may also have aromas of roses, passion fruit and floral notes. It is not uncommon to notice some spritz (fine bubbles on the inside of the glass).

CHARDONNAhY(white) Aromas of pineapple, apricot, cantaloupe, vanilla, toast, butter, caramel * France

C CHARDONNAY

Chardonnay is a greenskinned grape variety used in the production of white wine. The variety originated in the Burgundy wine region of eastern France, but is now grown wherever wine is produced, from England to New Zealand. For new and developing wine regions, growing Chardonnay is seen as a “rite of passage and an easy entry into the international wine market. The Chardonnay grape itself is neutral, with many of the flavors commonly associated with the wine being derived from such influences as terroir and oak. It is vinified in many different styles, from the lean, crisply mineral wines of Chablis, France, to New World wines with oak and tropical fruit flavors.

TOURIGA NACIONAL Aromas of Pine nuts, eucalyptus, blueberry, chocolate, coffee, rosemary, blackberry, cherry, raspberry * Portugal

T

ouriga Nacional is a variety of red wine grape, considered by many to be Portugal’s finest. Despite the low yields from its small grapes, it plays a big part in the blends used for ports, and is increasingly being used for table wine in the Douro and Dão. Touriga Nacional provides structure and body to wine, with high tannins and concentrated flavors of black fruit.

BRAND STORY AUSTRIAN-INSPIRED, MEXICAN-CRAFTED.

Born out of a love story between HP Eder from Austria and Adriana Alvarez Maxemin from Guadalajara, Mexico, Padre azul is an award-winning 100% blue agave super-premium tequila known for its vanilla and caramel flavors and unparalleled smooth finish.

From then on, Eder developed an intimate relationship with the Mexican way of life, where agave spirits are omnipresent. Fascinated by the culture, he soon became interested in tequila and its production. “In Europe there was mainly poor quality tequila at the time. Hardly anyone knew that high quality tequila Will the Austrian drink tequila? His team partnered with his father-in-law and a team of renowned Master Distillers from Jalisco, Mexico to create Padre azul.

Of course, it all began much earlier, namely, with an unusual love story: a Mexican woman studying in Heidelberg, Germany and an Austrian guy. HP met Adriana Alvarez Maxemin from Guadalajara, Mexico – capital of the federal state of Jalisco, not far from the origin of Tequila – at the university, who was studying German at the time. “We wanted a product that enchants from the very beginning. It needed to have that certain ’WOW!’ effect. It was very hard work, but at the end of the day we had a fantastic tequila with an incredibly smooth finish. Like alchemists, we searched for this liquid gold for a long time and when we first sipped what we later crowned Padre azul, we experienced this most magic moment.“

Padre azul was launched in 2016 by Eder and his compadres from Austria who saw a need for high-quality tequila in Europe, Eder’s Mexican father-in- law playing a crucial role in the birth of the brand. The European tequila explorers set about on their quest for the perfect taste, finally discovering it at a small distillery in Amatitán, nearby the famous village of Tequila.

HAND BLOWN BOTTLES

You won’t find any compromises in the design of the unusual “Padre azul” bottles either. Only the best is good enough for Padre azul, outside and in. The handmade bottle is inspired by Mexican heritage and culture. One important aspect of Mexican culture that fascinated Austrian HP Eder and his compadres was how much tradition and relationships with family and friends were valued, and he wanted to capture that on the bottle.

50 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

Padre azul bottles are topped with a 270-gram solid metal skull, paying homage to Dia de los Muertos and eternal friendship. The leather jacket with lacing is a tribute to the Mexican “Lucha Libre” wrestling masks and is a tribute to “El Santo,” the most famous luchador in Mexico. “Azul” refers to the “blue” Weber agave, from which tequila is made, and the name “Padre” does not mean the father, but quotes a popular Mexican saying: “que padre,” an expression of cheerful excitement, meaning “how fantastic” or “how wonderful.” Find out more:

CIGARROS LA HISTORIA

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2019 | 53

W

hen Christopher Columbus arrived in America in October 1492, one of the things that caught both his and the crew’s attention was the sight of men and women inhaling the smoke of a few tubes of dry leaves.

C

54 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

“... Men would always carry a tizon (burning coal) in their hands (cuba) and certain herbs for incense, which are dried herbs (cojiba) tucked in a certain dry leaf like a musket..., and lit on one side and sucked on the other, and they inhaled that smoke, which numbs the flesh and almost intoxicates, and so they say they do not feel fatigue. These muskets... they call them “tabacos” (cigars).

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2019 | 55

The tobacco plant, which cigars are made from, is originally from South America. It was always related to magical, religious, and medical practices of the natives of that continent. In the 17th and 18th centuries, tobacco began to circulate commercially both in the new world and in the old continent, since then the Cuban tobacco is recognized as the best quality tobacco in the world. Although it began to be grown elsewhere, almost all varieties descend from one or another form of the original Cuban plant. As for the cultivation of tobacco, it is an arduous and delicate task which requires experience and hard labor. It is grown under very harsh conditions because it requires high temperatures and humidity as well as a very specific method of care which sometimes yields few benefits. 56 | TEQUILAANDSPIRITS.COM

Once the tobacco is cut, the drying process begins. It is a long process that requires a lot of attention. If the humidity is too low, the floor and walls of the warehouse are sprayed to raise the humidity level, on the other hand, bonfires are ignited to remove excess humidity when it is too high. Once the tobacco leaf is ready, it must be classified by grades of texture which takes thickness into consideration, depending on the type of tobacco extracted, and class which differs according to its condition, degree of breakage, and size. The making of cigars continues to be done as it was 150 years ago.

During the production of cigars, people known as “tabaqueros” (cigar makers/ rollers) are required, a roll board, a crescentshaped blade called cotter pin (for trimming the leaves), a guillotine (to cut the cigar to the desired length), a pot of vegetable rubber (gum of tragacanth, inflavored, and inodore to glue the knob), a press, the molds, and, most importantly, their hands, skills, and experience.

Tabaqueros are experts in the subject of tobacco, a person with many years of experience and with a deep knowledge of the tobacco leaf. The average production rate is about 150 cigars a day. It is a very important operation where good results are measured by the cigar’s shot, combustibility, and appearance.

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2019 | 59

It takes years to become a good cigar roller, a reputation that once earned can be trusted with the elaboration of great cigars, such as Prominentes, Julietas, Laguito No.1, Piramides, etc. Once the skill is acquired, they are called “Juliteros” because these tabaqueros can twist a cigar with guaranteed quality.

Some of the most famous cigars today were born within the last century, as is the case of the Julietas (or “Churchills”), created in honor of Sir Winston Churchill, or the Laguito No. 1 (or “Lanceros”), elaborated initially for the personal consumption of Fidel Castro.

Other famous brands include: Hija de Cabañas and Carbajal (1819); Larrañaga (1834); Punch (1840); H. Upmann (1844); Partagas, Ramón Allones, and La Corona (1845); Sancho Panza (1850); Hoyo de Monterrey (1865); Romeo and Julieta (1875); El Rey del Mundo “King of the World” (1882); La Flor de Cano (1884); La Gloria Cubana (1885).

Almost all of these brands were founded by Spaniards who emigrated to the Caribbean island. The tobacco industry remained in Spanish hands until 1898, when Cuba was lost during the Spanish-American war.

The conditions in which cigars have to be stored are fundamental for their enjoyment: 65%-75% of relative air humidity; no contact with other products or substances that emit odors because tobacco is “hygroscopic” and absorbs the odors that surround it; 18º is the ideal temperature and temperatures superior to 23º must be avoided to prevent the development of mold, which alters their appearance.

When smoking a cigar, the smoke is not inhaled unlike cigarettes; cigars satisfy you fully while tasting the tobacco. The taste buds in your tongue transmit a range of sensations - sweet, salty, bitter, etc.

Or as the British politician, statesman, and writer Winston Churchill said,

“Smoking a cigar is like falling in love. First, you are attracted by its shape; you stay for its flavor, and you must always remember never, never to let the flame go out! “

ATOLE DRINK

By Luz Mariana Ramírez

What makes Mexico special? Name one classic thing about Mexico? Who can answer?

Of course, we can start with its typical food, for example, pozole, tacos, enchiladas, mole, birria, or sweets (borrachitos, cocadas). Then of course, we cannot forget the drinks, such as a good tequila, mezcal, hot chocolate, café con leche, or an atole.

Aha! That’s it! The Atole! But are you sure that’s it? Atole? Of course! We can find it in different flavors - strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, walnut, and even garbanzo bean.

Atole in Spanish, from Nahuatl atolli, also known as atol and atol de elote, is a traditional hot corn- and masa-based beverage of Mesoamerican origin.

Well, what exactly is Atole? Is it a typical food? Is it a mixed drink? Is it candy? What is Atole?

Bueno, pues por eso podemos comenzar. ¿Qué es atole? ¿Es algo típico? ¿Es una mezcla? ¿Es nuestra raíz? ¿Es una historia? ¿ es una leyenda? O, ¿es una buena bebida? ¿Qué es el atole?

Atole is one of the many traditional Mexican beverages of pre-Hispanic origin. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word “atolli” which means watery in the Aztec language.

It is corn based and can be combined with various flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, walnut, or even some fruit, for example, tamarind, mango, or strawberry. It can be sweetened with regular sugar, brown sugar, or honey.

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2019 | 67

Now let’s talk about its history. Fray Bernardino de Sahagún was one of the first Spaniards to report the existence of this drink and to report that the word “atolli” was divided into two roots - “atl” meaning water and “toloa” meaning to eat or swallow.

Interestingly, atole was considered a drink of the lower clases - the Indians - and chocolate was the drink of the upper classes. Now, of course, we can all enjoy it! There is no tourist who is not curious about this drink. There is no child, grandmother, mother, or father who can resist a cup of hot atole during a cold day, in the winter, at night, or in the early morning to warm their soul!

SEPTEMBER JANUARY / /FEBRUARY OCTOBER 2019 2018 | 89

Bugatti Chiron $2.7 MILLION Bugati’s is quite high-priced and starts at around $2.7 million based on the present exchange rates. However, prices are expected to reach $3 million in the least, long before it hits the market. The 8.0 liter turbo-charged W-16, 1,500-horsepower engine is actually 300 more than the Super Sport, the fastest Veyron model. While its top speed has been limited to 261 mph on the road.

Pagani Huayra BC $2.8 MILLION the Pagani Huayra BC is the priciest Pagani car ever made. Named as a tribute to Benny Caiola, a noted Italian investor with probably the best collection of Ferraris and a very close friend of Horacio Pagani, this car is a delight for the lovers of Pagani’s details. The interior of the Huayra BC is still an exquisitely detailed mix of high-quality materials and bespoke design elements although much has been pared down in the pursuit of lightness. The beautiful exposed gearchange linkage still takes pride of place between the driver and passenger and the gullwing doors offer easy access to the interior. Each car has been customized to the specific requirements of each owner giving an even more bespoke feel to this sports coupe.

Lykan Hypersport $3.4 MILLION The headlights being made of, urm, 240 15-carat diamonds, is the price very surprising? And then there are the LED blades made of 420 15-carat diamonds. And all the gems are customizable. Looking like an armored car with scissor doors and an interior straight out of a sci-fi movie, this featured in the ‘Furious 7’, and has actually been drafted by the Abu Dhabi police for patrol duty! Built by W Motors, based in Lebanon, this is the first Arab supercar. And it doesn’t fare badly when compared with the traditional European biggies. Apart from its awesome looks, the twin-turbo mid-rear mounted 3.8 liter flat-six boxer can produce 780 horsepower through the rear wheels, and a 708 pound-feet of torque. It can do a 62 in a mere 2.8 seconds, and can reach speeds up to 240 mph. 94 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

McLaren P1 LM $3.6 MILLION This car has a lot in common with the P1 GTR and the legendary McLaren F1 road car. For example, the gold plating surrounding the engine bay with a 3.8 liter twin-turbo V-8. It is much smarter than the P1 GTR. Not only does it weigh 132 pounds (60 kg0 less than the P1 GTR, but its modified rear wing and enlarged front splitter join with the dive planes to generate 40% increased downforce as compared to the P1 GTR. The awesomeness of the aerodynamics can be witnessed where it is made for- on track, where it can produce 1000 horsepower. As of yet, only five units have been built, all of them being sold.

The upgraded LED lights are everywhere – the headlight and taillight clusters, the cockpit. And for the aesthetically conscious, maps of history making events like the Targa Florio race and the like are laser etched into both the upholstered, carbon fiber interior, and the exterior. The 8.0 liter W16 engine of the car can produce 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 pound-feet of torque. The 6.5 liter V12 with a seven-speed single clutch ISR automated manual transmission can spin at 8,400 rpm to yield 740 horsepowers and 507 pound-feet of torque, meaning that the car can do a 60 mph at 2.9 seconds! Only 9 units being made, the biggets problem of these cars is their crazy resells ratesone was sold at $11 millions! Sweptail by Rolls Royce $11 MILLION This car is off the markets. That’s because it was made on the recommendations of one specific customer whose name the company has refused to divulge. A company famous for its luxurious rollouts, there were only 4,000 Rolls Royce cars manufactured in 2016! This particular exclusive car comes with its custom coach work, reminiscent of the royal carriages of yore. Probably modeled on the Wraith, this car can seat only two people (see what they mean by being exclusive?). The sunroof is fully panoramic, tapering down sharply like those of the racing yachts, as per the orders of the customer. Something very cool about the interior handcrafted with wood and leather are the hidden attachÊ cases for holding laptops behind each door. Not much else is available on this most expensive car in the world, except that it is based on the 1920s and 30s models, and looks like a yacht from the back. The owner does happen to be a collector of super-yachts and private planes.
