MARGARITA

CADILLAC COCKTAIL

14 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
TEQUILAANDSPIRITS.COM | 15

The Cadillac Margarita is a luxurious twist on the classic Margarita cocktail. While there isn’t a detailed historical narrative surrounding its creation like some other cocktails, its origin is often attributed to the evolution of the Margarita itself, which has a more documented history.

The Cadillac Margarita stands as a testament to the evolution of mixology, transforming a beloved classic into a symbol of luxury and refinement. Its history intertwines with the origins of the Margarita itself, weaving a tale of innovation and sophistication.

The Margarita, a beloved cocktail made with tequila, lime juice, and triple sec, is said to have originated in Mexico in the 1930s or 1940s. There are several stories about its creation, but it’s generally agreed that it gained popularity during Prohibition as Americans frequented Mexican border towns for alcohol.

The Cadillac Margarita likely emerged later as a premium version of the classic Margarita. The “Cadillac” designation in cocktails often denotes a higher quality or luxurious version, typically achieved by using premium ingredients. In the case of the Cadillac Margarita, this often means using top-shelf tequila and a high-quality orange liqueur such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau, along with fresh lime juice.

The exact origins of the Cadillac Margarita are somewhat elusive, but it has become a staple in many upscale bars and restaurants, appreciated for its smoothness and sophisticated flavor profile. Its popularity has undoubtedly been bolstered by the continued enthusiasm for Margaritas, as well as the allure of elevated versions of classic cocktails.

16 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

Beyond its status as a premium libation, the Cadillac Margarita has become synonymous with celebration and extravagance. Whether enjoyed on a special occasion or simply as a decadent treat, this cocktail embodies the spirit of luxury and indulgence.

The history of the Cadillac Margarita is a testament to the enduring allure of classic cocktails reinvented for a modern audience. Its journey from humble beginnings to haute couture libation mirrors the evolution of mixology itself, showcasing the endless possibilities of creativity and craftsmanship behind the bar.

In raising a glass to the Cadillac Margarita, we toast not only to its storied past but also to the promise of a future filled with innovation, elegance, and above all, extraordinary flavor.

Cadillac Margarita recipe:

Ingredients:

• 2 oz top-shelf tequila (preferably añejo or reposado)

• 1 oz Grand Marnier or Cointreau (high-quality orange liqueur)

• 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice

• 1/2 oz agave nectar or simple syrup (optional, for sweetness)

• Ice

• Salt (for rimming, optional)

• Lime wheel or wedge (for garnish)

Instructions:

1. If desired, rim a margarita glass with salt: Rub the rim of the glass with a lime wedge, then dip the rim into a shallow plate of salt until evenly coated.

2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

3. Pour in the top-shelf tequila, Grand Marnier or Cointreau, and freshly squeezed lime juice.

4. Optionally, add agave nectar or simple syrup for sweetness.

5. Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds to chill the mixture and combine the flavors.

6. Strain the cocktail into the prepared margarita glass filled with ice.

7. Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim of the glass.

8. Serve and enjoy your luxurious Cadillac Margarita!

Feel free to adjust the proportions of ingredients to suit your personal taste preferences. Some people prefer a slightly sweeter Margarita, so you can add more agave nectar or simple syrup if desired.

Similarly, you can experiment with different types of top-shelf tequila to find your favorite flavor profile. Cheers!

? ? ? ? ? ?

What’s the difference between a margarita and a Cadillac Margarita?

A margarita, by definition, is a cocktail made with tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice. A Cadillac margarita is the most premium variation of the cocktail that uses top-shelf liquor (including Grand Marnier and reposado tequila).

Why is it called Cadillac Margarita?

The origins of the Cadillac Margarita are murky, but it was popularized in the 1980s and ‘90s as chain restaurants began adding Cadillacs to their menus with substitutions like higher-end tequilas and the aforementioned Grand Marnier.

Is triple sec or Grand Marnier better for margaritas?

Grand Marnier offers a richer, sweeter flavor that triple sec just doesn’t have. If you think that Grand Marnier’s flavors will work with your recipe in lieu of triple sec (or vice versa), go ahead and give it a go! After all, these liqueurs are both orange-forward and will do nicely.

When did Cadillac Margarita come out?

The Cadillac Margarita, also known as the Grand Margarita, became popular in the 1980s and 1990s when chain restaurants began adding it to their menus.

What is the best tequila for a Cadillac Margarita?

Reposado or Añejo Tequila is known for its smooth, rich flavor, making it a perfect tequila for a Cadillac Margarita.

SPIRIT VODKA

20 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
TEQUILAANDSPIRITS.COM | 21

Vodka is a distilled alcoholic beverage primarily composed of water and ethanol, typically made from fermented grains or potatoes, though other base ingredients like fruits or sugar can be used as well. It’s known for its clear appearance and neutral flavor, making it a popular ingredient in cocktails or enjoyed on its own.

History of vodka

The history of vodka is somewhat disputed and shrouded in legends. Its origins are commonly attributed to Eastern Europe, particularly Russia and Poland, dating back to the Middle Ages. Early forms of vodka were likely crude distillates made from grains or potatoes.

Poland and Russia both claim to be the birthplace of vodka, with each country having its own historical accounts and traditions surrounding its production. In Poland, vodka production can be traced back to the early medieval period, while in Russia, the first recorded production dates to the late 9th century.

In the 16th century, vodka production began to spread to other parts of Eastern Europe, including Lithuania, Ukraine, and Sweden. By the 18th century, vodka production techniques had become more refined, leading to the creation of higher-quality spirits.

During the 20th century, vodka’s popularity surged globally, especially with the introduction of brands like Smirnoff and Absolut, which marketed vodka as a versatile and sophisticated spirit suitable for cocktails and mixed drinks. Today, vodka is one of the most consumed spirits worldwide, with a wide range of brands and styles available to consumers.

22 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

History of vodka in Russia?

The history of vodka in Russia is closely intertwined with the country’s culture and traditions. Vodka has been an integral part of Russian society for centuries, playing roles in social customs, religious rituals, and even economic policies.

The earliest records of vodka production in Russia date back to the late 9th century, although its exact origins are uncertain. Initially, vodka was produced in crude forms and was often used for medicinal purposes, as well as for rituals and celebrations.

During the medieval period, vodka production became more widespread, with monasteries and noble households producing their own spirits. It was also during this time that vodka began to be distilled multiple times, leading to a smoother and more refined product.

By the 16th century, vodka had become a significant part of Russian culture, with taverns and drinking establishments serving as social hubs in towns and villages. Tsar Ivan IV, also known as Ivan the Terrible, established the first state-

run vodka monopoly in the late 16th century, which provided a stable source of revenue for the government.

In the 18th century, under the rule of Peter the Great, the production and distribution of vodka were further regulated, laying the groundwork for the modern Russian vodka industry. Distilleries were established throughout the country, and quality standards were introduced to ensure the consistency of the spirit.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, vodka remained a staple of Russian life, even during periods of political and social upheaval. It continued to be produced and consumed despite changes in government policies and economic conditions.

Today, Russian vodka remains renowned worldwide for its quality and craftsmanship, with numerous brands and varieties available to consumers both domestically and internationally.

History of vodka in Poland

The history of vodka in Poland is rich and dates back to the early medieval period. Poland has a strong claim to being one of the birthplaces of vodka, alongside Russia, with historical records supporting its early production and consumption.

In Poland, vodka production can be traced back to the 8th or 9th century, where it was initially made from grains such as rye or wheat. Early Polish vodka was likely crude and not as refined as modern varieties, but it played an important role in Polish culture and society.

During the Middle Ages, vodka production in Poland became more widespread, with monasteries and noble households producing their own spirits. By the 15th century, vodka had become a significant part of Polish customs and traditions, used in religious ceremonies, as a medicinal remedy, and for social gatherings.

Poland’s long history of vodka production led to the development of advanced distillation techniques, resulting in higher-quality spirits. Polish vodka gained international recognition for its purity and craftsmanship, with exports reaching other parts of Europe and beyond.

Despite political changes and foreign occupations over the centuries, vodka remained an integral part of Polish culture and identity. Even during periods of adversity, such as the partitions of Poland in the 18th century and the turmoil of the 20th century, vodka production persisted, serving as a symbol of resilience and national pride.

Today, Polish vodka remains highly regarded for its quality and variety, with numerous brands and styles available to consumers worldwide. It continues to play a significant role in Polish celebrations, traditions, and culinary heritage.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY 2024

The 50th anniversary of the Denomination of Origin (DOT) for tequila marks a half-century since the Mexican government officially recognized and protected the geographical origin and production methods of tequila. This recognition has been pivotal in safeguarding the authenticity and quality of tequila, ensuring it can only be produced in designated regions of Mexico.

181 municipalities in the country have the DOT, which means that only the blue agave distillate produced in these areas can be marketed under the name of the distillate. Of these municipalities, 125 are in Jalisco, 30 in Michoacán, 11 in Tamaulipas, 8 in Nayarit and 7 in Guanajuato.

The Denomination of Origin of Tequila (DOT) is a distinctive that indicates the geographical origin of a product, which serves to designate an originating product, in this case the distillate. With this seal, the regional production of the drink is guaranteed, as well as its authenticity and quality, while safeguarding its history and unique characteristics.

From the cultivation of blue agave to the bottling of the final product, the CRT meticulously regulates every step to ensure adherence to strict quality standards.

Over the years, the CRT’s efforts have not only preserved tequila’s integrity but also elevated its global stature. MYTHS

76 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

Tequila, with its rich heritage and distinctive flavor, has garnered a mystique that is often accompanied by a slew of myths and misconceptions. Let’s embark on a journey to separate fact from fiction as we delve into the captivating world of tequila.

Tequila has its fair share of myths and legends surrounding it.

Tequila Worm:

One of the most famous myths is that there’s a worm in the bottle of tequila. While some mezcals may include an agave worm as a marketing gimmick, it’s not a traditional practice with tequila. It’s more associated with mezcal, another agavebased spirit.

Tequila Makes You Hallucinate:

Some believe that drinking tequila, especially with the worm, can cause hallucinations. This is entirely false. Tequila, like any other alcoholic beverage, can impair judgment and perception, but it doesn’t contain any hallucinogenic properties.

Hangover-Free Tequila:

Another myth is that certain types of tequila won’t give you a hangover. While it’s true that higher quality tequilas may result in fewer hangover symptoms due to fewer impurities, excessive consumption of any alcohol can still lead to a hangover.

Tequila is Only Made from Cactus:

Tequila is actually made from the blue agave plant, not a cactus. The blue agave is part of the agave family, which is related to the lily and amaryllis families, not the cactus family.

Tequila Only Comes from Mexico:

While Mexico is indeed the primary producer of tequila, it can legally be produced in other countries. However, for it to be called “tequila,” it must adhere to strict regulations set by the Mexican government, including being made from blue agave grown in designated regions of Mexico.

Tequila Causes Aggressive Behavior:

While alcohol can lower inhibitions and potentially lead to aggressive behavior in some individuals, tequila itself doesn’t have unique properties that make it more likely to cause aggression compared to other types of alcohol.

All Tequila Tastes the Same:

Just like wine or whiskey, tequila comes in various styles and flavors depending on factors such as the type of agave used, the production process, and aging. There’s a wide range of taste profiles among different tequilas, from earthy and vegetal to sweet and fruity.

Tequila is Always drunk as shots Lime and Salt:

While tequila shots with lime and salt are a popular way to consume it, especially in certain social settings, there are many other ways to enjoy tequila, including sipping it neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails.

Tequila is a Stimulant:

Some people believe that tequila is a stimulant because of the initial energy boost they may feel after drinking it. However, like all alcoholic beverages, tequila is a depressant that slows down the central nervous system.

Tequila is Always Made from Blue Agave:

While most tequilas are indeed made from blue agave, there are variations. For example, mixto tequila may contain up to 49% non-agave sugars, typically from cane or corn syrup. However, to be labeled as “tequila,” it must still contain at least 51% blue agave.

Tequila with a Higher Alcohol Percentage is Better:

Some people believe that higher alcohol content in tequila equates to better quality. However, the alcohol percentage doesn’t necessarily indicate quality. Some premium tequilas may have lower alcohol content to allow the flavors to shine through.

Tequila Makes You Lose Weight:

There’s a myth that drinking tequila can aid in weight loss. While it’s true that tequila is lower in calories compared to sugary cocktails, consuming excessive amounts of any alcoholic beverage can lead to weight gain due to the empty calories.

Tequila is a Natural Aphrodisiac:

While some may believe that tequila has aphrodisiac properties, there’s no scientific evidence to support this claim. Any perceived effects on libido are likely due to the alcohol’s general disinhibiting effects rather than any specific properties of tequila.

Tequila is always aged in wooden barrels:

Tequila is not always aged in wooden barrels. While aging in wooden barrels is common for certain types of tequila, such as reposado and añejo, not all tequila undergoes this process. Blanco tequila, for example, is typically unaged or aged for a very short period in stainless steel tanks or neutral oak barrels to preserve its pure, agave-forward flavor. Some premium blancos are never aged at all to maintain their crisp and fresh characteristics. Therefore, whether or not tequila is aged in wooden barrels depends on the specific type and style of tequila being produced.

Tequila is only for shots, not for sipping:

Tequila is not only for shots; it can be enjoyed in various ways, including sipping. Many tequila aficionados appreciate the complexity and nuances of different tequilas when sipped slowly, similar to the experience of savoring a fine whiskey or brandy. Tequila, especially higherquality varieties like añejo and extra añejo, often offers layers of flavors and aromas that can be best appreciated when sipped neat

Tequila is a Mexican moonshine: No, tequila is not a Mexican moonshine. Tequila is a legally produced and regulated spirit made in specific regions of Mexico, primarily in the state of Jalisco. Tequila production is governed by strict laws and regulations, ensuring quality, authenticity, and adherence to traditional methods. Moonshine, on the other hand, is often produced clandestinely and may not meet safety or quality standards. While both tequila and moonshine are distilled spirits, they differ significantly in terms of production, regulation, and cultural significance.

Drinking tequila guarantees a hangover: Drinking tequila, like any alcoholic beverage, can contribute to a hangover if consumed excessively. However, whether or not someone experiences a hangover after drinking tequila depends on various factors, including the amount consumed, hydration levels, individual tolerance, and overall health. Quality tequila, especially when consumed in moderation and accompanied by sufficient water intake, may lessen the likelihood of a severe hangover compared to lower-quality spirits or excessive consumption. It’s essential to drink responsibly and be mindful of personal limits to minimize the risk of experiencing a hangover.

Tequila is not as strong as other spirits:

Tequila typically has a similar alcohol content to other distilled spirits, usually ranging from 35% to 50% alcohol by volume (ABV), which is comparable to the alcohol content of other spirits like vodka, rum, gin, and whiskey. Therefore, tequila can be just as strong as these other spirits when consumed in equal measure. However, the perceived strength of tequila can vary depending on individual tolerance, the specific type and quality of tequila, and how it’s consumed (neat, mixed in cocktails, etc.). It’s essential to drink responsibly and be mindful of the alcohol content in any spirit to avoid overconsumption.

Tequila is always made using the same production process: While there are specific steps involved in tequila production, such as harvesting, cooking, fermentation, distillation, and aging (if applicable), the exact production process can vary among distilleries. This beverage has a Denomination of Origin Seal, which means that it can only be produced in Jalisco, Michoacán, Tamaulipas, Nayarit y Guanajuato.

Tequila must be made from at least 51% blue agave sugars, although most high-quality tequilas are made from 100% blue agave. The agave hearts, or piñas, are typically harvested, cooked, crushed, and fermented to extract the sugars, which are then distilled to create tequila.

While the basic steps remain consistent, variations in factors such as fermentation times, distillation techniques, aging durations, and barrel types can lead to different flavor profiles and characteristics in the final product. Additionally, artisanal producers may incorporate traditional methods and techniques that differ from larger commercial distilleries, resulting in unique tequilas with distinct personalities.

Overall, while there are similarities in the production process, there can be variations in the specific methods and techniques used by different tequila producers.

Tequila is not a sophisticated drink. Yes, tequila can be considered a sophisticated drink. While it’s often associated with casual settings and lively celebrations, premium tequilas offer complexity, depth of flavor, and craftsmanship that rival other fine spirits like whiskey or cognac.

High-quality tequilas, especially aged expressions like añejo and extra añejo, undergo meticulous production processes and aging techniques that result in refined and nuanced flavor profiles. These tequilas may exhibit notes of caramel, vanilla, oak, and spice, with a smooth and velvety texture that is ideal for sipping and savoring.

Moreover, the cultural heritage and tradition surrounding tequila production add to its sophistication. From the agave fields of Jalisco to the skilled hands of master distillers, tequila embodies centuries of Mexican craftsmanship and artistry.

These myths and misconceptions contribute to the folklore surrounding tequila, but it’s essential to separate fact from fiction when enjoying this beloved spirit.

These myths have been perpetuated over time, adding to the lore and mystique surrounding tequila.

In unraveling these myths, we gain a deeper appreciation for the storied tradition and nuanced craftsmanship behind tequila. Beyond the tales and legends, lies a spirit steeped in culture, history, and unparalleled complexity. So, the next time you raise a glass of tequila, savor not only its flavor but also the truths that dispel the myths, enriching the experience with every sip.

Cheers to the spirit of discovery!
