TEQUILA SUNRISE COCKTAIL

14 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
TEQUILAANDSPIRITS.COM | 15

The tequila sunrise

is a cocktail made of tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup. The drink is served unmixed in a tall glass. The modern drink originates from Sausalito, California, in the early 1970s after an earlier iteration created in the 1930s in Phoenix, Arizona. The cocktail is named for its appearance when served—with gradations of color resembling a sunrise.

The original tequila sunrise contained tequila, creme de cassis, lime juice, and soda water, and was served at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel where it was created by Gene Sulit in the 1930s or 1940s.

The more popular modern version of the cocktail contains tequila, orange juice, and grenadine, and was created by Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice in the early 1970s while working as young bartenders at the Trident in Sausalito, California north of San Francisco. In 1972, at a private party at the Trident organized by Bill Graham to kick off the Rolling Stones’ 1972 tour in America, Mick Jagger had one of the cocktails, liked it, and he and his entourage started drinking them. They later ordered them all across America, even dubbing the tour itself their “cocaine and tequila sunrise tour”

At the time, the Trident was the largest outlet for tequila in the United States, and in 1973 Jose Cuervo picked up on the new drink as a marketing opportunity and put the recipe for the new drink on the back of their bottles of tequila, and promoted it in other ways.

16 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

Later that same year, the Eagles recorded a song called “Tequila Sunrise” for their Desperado album as the drink was soaring in popularity.

In 1988, a successful film titled Tequila Sunrise was released, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Mel Gibson and Kurt Russell, and directed by Robert Towne.

The tequila sunrise is considered a long drink and is usually served in a collins or highball glass. The International Bartender Association has designated this cocktail as an IBA Official Cocktail.

The drink is mixed by pouring in Tequila, ice, then the juice and, lastly, syrup. The signature look of the drink depends on adding the syrup without mixing with the other ingredients. A spoon may be used to guide the syrup down the glass wall to the bottom of the glass with minimal mixing.

? ? ? ? ? ?

What’s tequila sunrise made of?

This classic drink has only three ingredients—tequila, grenadine and orange juice—and is served unmixed to preserve the color of each layer.

What do tequila sunrise taste like?

The Tequila Sunrise cocktail has a bright, citrusy taste. The sweetness of grenadine combines with the tang of the orange juice to make a cocktail that’s fresh and fruity.

Is tequila sunrise a well drink?

This fruity well drink is perfect for those who want a cocktail without a strong boozy flavor.

Which tequila is best for tequila sunrise?

Tequila: Silver/Blanco, Reposado, Añejo it all works. 100% agave is best.

What is the difference between a tequila sunrise and a tequila sunset?

Both the tequila sunrise and tequila sunset contain tequila, orange juice and fresh fruit for garnishes. The difference between a sunrise and sunset is that the sunrise uses sweet grenadine to achieve its red hue, while the sunset uses blackberry brandy for a darker ombre effect.

ORANGE WINE

20 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE
TEQUILAANDSPIRITS.COM | 21

ORANGE WINE

Orange wine, also known as skin-contact white wine, skinfermented white wine, or amber wine, is a type of wine made from white wine grapes where the grape skins are not removed, as in typical white wine production, and stay in contact with the juice for days or even months.

This contrasts with conventional white wine production, which involves crushing the grapes and quickly moving the juice off the skins into the fermentation vessel. The skins contain color pigment, phenols and tannins that would normally be considered undesirable for white wines, while for red wines skin contact and maceration is a vital part of the winemaking process that gives red wine its color, flavor, and texture.

H I S T O R Y

The practice has a long history in winemaking dating back hundreds of years in Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and thousands of years in the Eastern European wine producing country of Georgia.

The practice was repopularized by Italian and Slovenian winemakers, after visiting Georgia and importing qvevris, initially in the cross-border Friuli-Venezia Giulia wine and Gorizia Hills regions, while there is also production in Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, New Zealand, and California.

Skin-fermented white wines were common in Italy up until the 1950s and 1960s, but fell out of fashion as technically ‘correct’ and fresh white wines came to dominate the market.

ORANGE WINE

The popular term orange wine was coined by a British wine importer, David A. Harvey, in 2004.

This style of wines can also be known by their color references of having an amber or orange tinge that the base white wine receives due to its contact with the coloring pigments of the grape skins.

In Georgia skin-contact white wine is historically known as amber wine.

26 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

WINE STYLES

The basic differences of orange wine with the other wine ‘colors’ are based on the color of the grape and the duration of their skin contact.

Red wine is made with red grapes. After the red grapes are crushed, their skins stay in contact for a period of 1 week to 1 month, and the wine gets a red or deep red color. Rosé, at least when rosé wine is the primary product, is produced with the skin contact method, using red grapes. After the grapes are crushed, their skins only stay in contact a few hours before pressing, but in that short period they give the wine the characteristic light pink hue.

White wine is made either with red or white grapes. The grapes are pressed and their skins are removed immediately. Because the grape skins do not “participate” in the fermentation, their color does not matter and the wine acquires a neutral, green to slightly yellow hue. Orange wine is made with white grapes. After they are crushed, their skins stay in contact for 1 month to 6 months, and the wine acquires an amber, orange color.

THE ART OF DRINKING

EL ARTE DE TOMAR

Truth be told, there is no right or wrong way to drink tequila. Everyone drinks it as they wish. However, there are some rituals that have been established in the art of drinking tequila. You are not obliged to follow these customs; drink it as you choose.

44 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

TEQUILA

TEQUILAANDSPIRITS.COM | 45

Some traditional ways to Drink Tequila

Algunas formas tradicionales para beber tequila

The first way is by using the typical “caballito” (small glass of one to two ounces). The ritual consists of licking the skin between the thumb and the index finger, adding salt to the wet part of your hand, licking the salt, drinking the tequila shot, and immediately sucking on a slice of lemon.

Another way to drink tequila is by drinking it slowly to savor the taste. You drink it in small sips, especially if it is a good tequila. Different glasses are used to drink it, depending on the type of tequila, for example:

Otra forma de tomar el tequila, es tomarlo lentamente para saborearlo y degustarlo, más si se trata de un buen tequila; se toma a pequeños sorbos claro existen diferentes vasos para hacerlo, dependiendo del tipo o clase de tequila, por ejemplo:

46 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

A caballito is used to drink a silver/blanco or reposado tequila; an old fashion glass when ice is added; and a globe drinking glass for an aged or extra aged tequila.

Another well-known way to drink it among tequila drinkers consists of alternating tequila with sangrita; yes, alternate a sip of tequila with a little bit of sangrita. If you want to make your own sangrita at home, it’s very easy. Just mix 1 cup of orange juice, 1 cup of tomato juice, a splash of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of grenadine, and about twelve drops of a hot sauce of your choice.

Tequila can also be mixed as a cocktail by combining your favorite tequila with other ingredients. Here are some examples:

A Tequila Sunrise cocktail consists of a mix of tequila, grenadine, orange juice, and is usually served with a cherry sprout. It is called Tequila Sunrise because of its colorful appearance.

The Paloma cocktail is a mix of tequila, orange and lemon juice, which are the base ingredients of all Mexican cocktails. Although the Margarita is a very popular cocktail, the Paloma is consumed locally throughout the country.

50 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

One last piece of advice, be careful with mixed tequilas. These are not 100% agave tequila and contain less than 51% agave content. They are fortified with sugar cane or corn syrup. They do not have a pure tequila taste and give you a strong hangover the next day.

Drink your tequila as you like, but remember that the quality, quantity, and consequences depend on you.

The Margarita cocktail, a mix of tequila, lemon juice, and garnish with lemon, is usually served in a glass frosted with salt. Other Margarita flavors include strawberry, tamarind, or mango.

ESPRESSO MARTINI

The espresso martini is a cold caffeinated alcoholic drink made with espresso, coffee liqueur, and vodka. It is not a true martini as it contains neither gin nor vermouth, but is one of many drinks that incorporate the term martini into their names.

56 | TEQUILA & SPIRITS MAGAZINE

ORIGIN

There are several claims for the origin of the espresso martini. One of the more common claims is that it was created by Dick Bradsell in the late 1980s while at Fred’s Club in London for a young lady who asked for something that would “Wake me up, and then fuck me up.” Bradsell has made this claim in a widelycirculated video. Bradsell has also been quoted about the circumstances of his invention of the drink, “The coffee machine at the Soho Brasseries was right next to the station where I served drinks. It was a nightmare, as there were coffee grounds everywhere, so coffee was very much on my mind. And it was all about vodka back then – it was all people were drinking.”

The drink had a surge in popularity in 2021. This popularity was met with apprehension by bartenders due to the time and effort required to prepare the drink.

? ? ? ? ? ?

What’s an espresso martini made of?

Add vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso and simple syrup to a shaker filled with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with 3 coffee beans.

Is espresso martini with vodka or tequila?

The classic one has all the same ingredients, except there is vodka instead of Tequila. It’s made with espresso, coffee liqueur, simple syrup, and a shot of vodka. Vodka is more neutral in flavor and coffee definitely overpowers it.

Is espresso martini a strong drink?

It’s got a fairly high alcohol content – 60 ml / 2 oz combined total of vodka and Kahlua which equals 2 standard drinks. Even though it’s got a decent slog of alcohol in it, it’s highly drinkable because the coffee flavour disguises the alcohol – so be warned!!

Base spirit * Vodka Served * Straight up: chilled, without ice Standard garnish * 3 coffee beans Standard drinkware * Cocktail Glass

Ingredients

50 ml vodka 30 ml Kahlúa

10 ml sugar syrup

1 strong espresso

Preparation *

Pour all ingredients into cocktail shaker, shake well with ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Can espresso martini make u drunk?

while you might feel less drunk, you’re just as drunk as you would be if you didn’t add the caffeine.” But it’s worth noting that espresso martinis aren’t the only popular bev that poses that risk

Why is Espresso Martini so good?

“Even more than the caffeine boost, I think Espresso Martinis are so popular these days because bartenders have learned how to make them taste great. Using fresh, high quality espresso, a good coffee liqueur and good vodka, it’s easy to see why they’re so much more delicious than they were a few decades ago.”

A Luxury for your Celebrations — Deep garnet color with intense flavors of sweet black cherries and ripe strawberries. It has a lively fizz that lifts the fruit and sweetness making it fun to drink. Serve cold in a champagne flute or pour over ice and garnish with a slice of orange or peach.

A perfect accompaniment to casual dining -- pizza, burgers, barbecue. Drinks well with spicy foods, but is at its best with dark chocolate.

IYLIA MOSCATEL MACABEO SPANISH WHITE BLEND 2020

Our IYLIA Moscatel-Macabeo white wine is made with Moscatel and Macabeo grape varieties grown in the Valencia region of Spain. The Macabeo grape lends itself to this wine’s fresh, crisp features, while the incredibly aromatic Moscatel, which is a sherry grape, brings this blend the fruity notes you’ll taste in the long, smooth finish. We bring you this combination after aging it in stainless steel barrels to further enhance the crisp flavors that blend beautifully for a lively, fruity, and refreshing white wine.

HIGHLAND PARK FIRE EDITION

A celebration of the Norse myth of Ragnarok - or re-birth - Highland Park Fire Edition is aged for 15 years in port-seasoned oak casks - a first for the distillery - offering a unique perspective on the legendary Highland Park spirit. Aromas of single origin chocolate and ripe plum mingle with deep oak spice and campfire smoke before reasserting similar flavors of berry custard, sweet vanilla, and a hint of smoked sea salt on the palate. The finish is satisfyingly rich and long. Highland Park Fire Edition was given the highest recommendation and five stars upon release.

CHIVAS ULTIS

At the heart of Chivas Regal are its Master Blenders. Only five have spent their life’s work mastering the famous house style since 1801. In celebration of their dedication and talent, Chivas hand-selected 5 of their most precious signature single malts: Strathisla, Longmorn, Tormore, Braeval, Allt A’Bhainne. Each one to honor the legacy of five generations of blending excellence. This outstanding blended malt whisky pays tribute to the strength of the vision, commitment and mastery of Charles Howard, of Charles Julian, of Alan Baillie, of Jimmy Lang and of Colin Scott.

A GOOD DAY AWAITS.
