WHAT IS A SPORTS SEDAN?

Sports Sedans are a category unique to Australia in which vehicles are is based on a production touring car but modifications allowable under the rules enable them to be more suitable for racing competition. The category caters to a wide variety of body and engine combinations and budget levels amongst competitors.

While the bodies look similar to road sedans, that is where the similarities end. The buzzword is BIG. Big engines, big wings, big tyres and big performance. Almost anything goes in this class and it is one of the most awesome forms of racing going. When walking through the race paddock, do a quick comparison between a Sports Sedan and your own road car. They have wide, low-profile tyres and huge front airdams which provide downforce to the front of the car and at the rear, huge rear wings that keep the rear tyres glued to the track.

In Sports Sedan racing, power to weight is everything. To promote that power, body panels are often made of lightweight materials, the wheels made from alloy composites and even the windows are made from plexiglass and windscreens made from lexan plastics. Underneath their smooth skins, they are pure race car, designed and built in many cases from the ground up to be fast, light, agile and stunningly effective.

Construction methods vary according to a competitors budget. Most of the top line Sports Sedans feature a fully fabricated space-frame chassis, with the engine located well back in the chassis, leaving not a lot of room for the driver to sit. Carbon fibre is also being used more regularly in Sports Sedan construction of late because of its combination of strength and lightweight composition.

Suspension technology has progressed over the years to a point where the modern high-budget Sports Sedan handles similar to an Indycar or Formula 1 GP car. Most competitors run a double wishbone coil over front suspension system or a rocker arm system. Rear suspension depends once again on budget, most front running cars use an independent rear suspension setup utilising a Hewland transaxle. Lower budget competitors mostly use a live rear axle setup with a watts-linkage/coil over shock rear suspension.

In Sports Sedans, the maximum engine capacity limit is 6 litres or 6000ccs. The most popular engine used in top line Sports Sedans is the 350c.i. Chevrolet. Many of the leading competitors are now extracting a brutal 600+ hp out of these engines by using such equipment as Motec engine management systems. Other popular engines used include the 351c.i. Ford Cleveland/Nascar block. Turbo charged engines have been used with mixed success over the years however with more development, there is no doubt these engines have plenty of potential. Keith Carling who used to drive a Nissan 300ZX Turbo still holds the Sports Sedan lap record around Bathurst with a stunning 2min 13 second lap time set back in 1992. Only recently have the much more highly developed and highly funded V8 Supercars gone quicker around The Mountain. Mazda Rotary engines are also used successfully at both National and State level events along with many types of six and four cylinder engines. The Under 2 Litre Sports Sedans class have grown in popularity over the last 5 years to a point where they now compete in their own National Championship.

Sports Sedans are raced in each state of Australia at both National events such as the Shell Australian Touring Car Rounds, and State and Club level events. In the past, the Sports Sedans have been invited to other major race meetings such as the Australian F1 and Indycar GP events as a support category. Several Australian competitors have also taken their cars up to Indonesia and Malaysia to compete against other similar cars which are raced in those countries.

Some of the well known Australian drivers to have competed in the Sports Sedan category include Peter Brock, Alan Jones, Alan Grice, Jim Richards, Mark Skaife, Glenn Seton, Dick Johnson and Frank Gardner plus many others too numerous to mention.

Sports Sedans are uniquely Australian. The thundering roar of 600 hp V8s mixed in with the screaming turbos, crackling rotaries and two litre cars are what it is all about. The variety of body shapes, construction methods and budget levels are just three of the features which makes Sports Sedans one of the most spectacular Premier categories in the country, and also one of the more affordable entry levels into Australian Motor Sport.

President’s Welcome 2023 Historic Sandown

elcome one and all to Historic Sandown 2023, “31 Years of Thunder”. This is the 31st year of this event promoted by the VHRR, and it is great to see so many people taking part in the true spirit of Historic Racing at Sandown.

This year sees an entry of some 320 plus cars represented in many historic categories. There will be some very exciting racing in all groups over the weekend, and also some great cars on display on the concourse, in the public areas surrounding the pits, and in the “Red Hill’ spectator area at the Dandenong Road Corner of the circuit. A free shuttle bus will operate between the main gate and Red Hill at regular intervals.

On behalf of VHRR I extend a warm welcome to all of the competitors, and particularly those who have come from interstate, to support this meeting. It is fantastic to see so many of you make such an effort to come to Sandown.

I am certain we will see many fantastic events over the weekend. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend of Historic Motor Racing.

I also want to extend special thanks to all of the volunteer officials who have supported this

meeting, including those from VHRR, MG Car Club, Vic Flag Marshalls, Vic Scrutineers, Fire and Rescue, and Medical response. Particular thanks to our long serving Clerk of Course, David Vernall, and his very experienced team in Race Control.

Thanks also to Melbourne Racing Club for the magnificent presentation of the Sandown venue for our event

A big thank you to our very loyal Major Sponsors, COOLDRIVE, PENRITE, and all the other sponsors who have advertised with us in the program, or who have set up a trade stand at this event. Please take the time to look at all the trade stands and support the sponsors that support Historic Racing. Without our sponsors we simply would not be able to run such great events.

Finally, on behalf of the VHRR I would like to thank our Chairman of the Sandown Race Committee, Noel Robson, his race committee, and the MG Car Club of Victoria for the long hours and effort they put in to organize this great event.

Enjoy your weekend

Thomas Vondrasek

Built in 1977 by Dale Sudholz for Rusty French to run in Group C. Its first race was the Sandown Hang Ten 400 in 1977 with Leo Leonard codriving. Unfortunately it failed to finish (sadly common trend in its career). The car raced in Group C until the end of 1979 when regulation changes meant the XD was the car of choice. It raced mainly in local Victorian events as Rusty didn’t have the budget to go interstate. It did compete at 3 Bathurst’s. In 1977, with Rusty French and Leo Leonard behind the wheel the car made it to the end of the race but only did 90 laps due to a broken gear box mount, being classified as a non-finisher. In 1978 it was part of the 2 car team with John Goss, being painted up as a blue sister car. Graeme Moore was the co-driver with Rusty French. Unfortunately the results weren’t much better with the car making it to the end but only finishing 99 laps due to several mechanical gremlins. Now in its black scheme again and with Moore as Co-driver, the XC

didn’t finish at all with the engine blowing 10 laps in. Its best result was the 1978 Oran Park 500 with French and Goss at the wheel. The car finished in 9th but only after a long pitstop to fix a broken gear shift. My father bought the car in 1984 as a stripped out shell as the mechanicals were put in the XD. He eventually put it back into group C spec and started racing in historic events in 2010. Dad got Murray Carter and Jim Keogh to drive the car for him at various events, most notably the 2012 F1 Grand Prix. The car was mothballed for 9 years until I finally took an interest and started driving it, with my fist event being regularity at the 2022 Historic Sandown. Since then I’ve only been able to do 2 events, racing in Group C & A at the Phillip Island Classic and Winton Festival of speed. I’m hoping to take the car interstate next year, running in more Group C events.

After purchasing his first race car almost 10 years ago, a BMW 2002, Rob ( Hotdog) has moved into a bigger faster car. Rob saw success in the little BMW winning the HTCAV rookie of the year, followed by many club placements including 4 club under 2L class championships as well as a second overall club championship. Robs new car, a 68 Trans Am mustang, has a long pedigree race history including once in the hands of Jim Richards. This will be only Robs 3rd race meeting in the car, “it’s a very well-prepared car and whilst it’s a big change I am really enjoying the challenge” he said.

Tribute Cars & Invited C&A

Whilst having raced an MGB V8 for about 15 years I was always drawn to the Sports Cars at historic race meetings. I found this car by default after missing out on another in the USA and eventually convinced the guy who had bought it to pass it on to me with out restoring it. It eventually arrived in Australia mid 2015 and was a lot worse for wear than I really expected - although you never get much for $10k !!!

The car hadn’t run for over 15 years when I purchased it but it had been very active on the West coast of the US from the original 1985 import by Essex Racing through to the late 1990’s - it was at one point owned and raced by Didier Theys - a Belgium sportscar endurance race driver with Spa and Daytona 24hr wins and a 3rd place at Le Mans 24 Hr - he probably used this car for practice!.

The car is a Tiga Race Cars Ltd, Sports 2000, SC85 - this is the company Australia and VHRRs’ own Tim Schenken established in the 1970s’ with Howden Ganley in the UK to design and build race cars. It has an aluminium monocoque chassis and fibreglass body with essentially Formula Ford running gear. The engine is a

Ford Pinto SOHC 2000cc coupled with a Hewland MK9, 4 speed gearbox. The engine control for Sports 2000 is that they must be basically standard Ford specification.

I stripped the car back to a bare monocoque and carried out a total restoration - except for the engine which is as it arrived apart form a few new gaskets and a coat of paint - still the same bearings and rings!!! It is the original Jay Ivey motor with all the rebuilds stamped on the block.

I first ran the car in 2018 at the Winton Festival of Speed and had a number of DNFs over the next 18 months as we tried to sort out numerous issues. That continued up until Covid although the car was becoming more reliable. The car has only run a few times since covid but it is now pretty well sorted - the best bit being that I’ve spent less running this car over the last 5 years than I did in my last year running the V8 MG !!!

Group R Sports Cars is a fantastic class of racing and with this type of car is very economical and the competition is amazing with great camaraderie within the group.

The Ausca was a project that started back in 1957 by Nevelle Smith in Wollongong NSW, from a body built by Paul England from drawings of Paul’s car. It passed through a number of hands until I bought it in 1999. It took a 17 year rebuild that was finished in COVID. It has a Repco head, on a grey Holden motor, FJ front end, Moss gearbox and Holden diff and springs. I started my racing career with this car at Winton in 2022 in regularity.

Peter Fowler/Bryan Thompson Mercedes 450 SLC Sports Sedan

One of the iconic Sports Sedans here this weekend is the Peter Fowler designed and built Mercedes 450 SLC driven by Peter Fowler, John Bowe, and Brad Jones.

In 1980 following many years in motor sport, building, and preparing cars for Bryan Thomson, but also for other drivers and teams, a 33 year old Peter Fowler decided that it was time to design and build a Sports Sedan of his own.

PF Racing Developments, in conjunction with local businesses and interested parties formed the Shepparton on the Move Project to finance the project and the car ran the in the Advance Australia colours in its first season.

The concept by Peter was to have a car that would stand out from the crowd and hopefully assist with further funding of the project.

As with all motor sport, funding is the key, so he chose a Mercedes 450SLC body. The engine chosen was the Thomson/Fowler Quad valve 6 litre V8 Chevrolet V8 that was designed and built to run in the Bryan Thomson Volkswagen Fastback Sports Sedan in 1975.

The car was designed and built in 1980 and ready for the 1981 season with a young John Bowe named as the main driver. The design broke new ground in several ways for Sports Sedans:

• Mid mounted Quad valve Chevrolet 6 litre V8, back of block at wheelbase centre line. (mid-mounted)

• Five speed Hewland Transaxle, with the clutch, flywheel, starter, and alternator at the rear of the car for perfect weight distribution.

• After lots of discussions with CAMS and inspections by Harry Firth, (Holden Dealer Team Fame) the car was the first full tube chassis Sports Sedan.

The first race meeting was Sandown in February, followed by a further seven meetings over the year at mainly Victorian race circuits. It was a development year for the car and generally competitive with finishes inside the top four at all circuits.

Later in the year Bryan Thomson assisted with test driving and development, although not competing. A young Brad Jones also drove the car later in the year when John Bowe had other commitments to Formula 5000 and Formula 2. The old problem of a lack of money made progress slower than hoped so the Australian Road Transport Team (ARTT) was formed with the help of Bryan Thomson which raised funds from the transport industry to fund the 1982 season.

In 1982 Brad Jones took over as the regular driver.

Development continued on the Quad valve V8 engine which was used throughout 1982 but it soon became apparent that it lacked the horsepower required to run at the front. Nine race meetings were run over the year but by late 1982 the project had stalled again due to a lack of finances. Continued page 43.............

50 years later and we are about to celebrate this milestone with a gathering of L34’s. The venue is Phillip Island and it’s on the long weekend. The very weekend the VHRR hold their historic racing meet. It’s the ideal location and event to join in with, as the variety of cars on show is fantastic. It will be a total of 4 days of activities for L34 owners and people joining in. On Friday 8th the main street in the town of Cowes will be lined with race cars, L34’s and a heap of other cool cars to look at. Lots of places to grab a bite to eat or drink and check out the cars and chat.

On Saturday 9th 25 people from L34 group attending has been invited to parade laps behind a pace car of the Phillip Island circuit before gates open and racing begins. It will be an opportunity not many get to drive their road car on a racetrack. Afterwards, a prime parking spot has been put aside for the L34’s in front of the pavilion on the main straight to display the cars to the public. Some owners will even get to participate in charity rides in between races throughout the day. The day will be caped of with a organised photo shoot on the main straight of all L34’s, race cars and road cars. This will be a sight not seen before or likely for some time to come. A pizza night is being arranged for those who want to join in with that.

On Sunday 10th there is the same opportunity for 25 more L34 group attendees to hit the track in the parade laps. We also have the same parking spot through out the day.

On Monday 11th the L34 group have the opportunity to attend Lang Lang. Holden’s old proving ground. It is currently owned by VinFast and they are open to us getting inside the facility for a tour.

Malcolm Oastler

The Mildren

Designed by Len Bailey and built at Allan Mann racing, with input from Frank Gardener, the Mildren F5000 was purchased by Alec Mildren, and raced by Kevin Bartlett in the 1969 AGP, and the 1970 Tasman Series. It was used very little after that, and last raced in 1974.

Purchased by Matt Veal in 2010, and treated to a comprehensive rebuild, the car had its first outing in 47 years at Wakefield Park in 2022.

Malcolm Oastler

Born and raised in Sydney, Malcolm competed in Formula Ford in the early 80s, before heading to the UK to pursue a career designing racing cars. That worked out OK, but he eventually lost interest and got sick of the English winters, moving back to OZ in 2004.

Since then he has completed in Hillclimbs, and some Historic Racing in an F2 Kaditcha and Ralt RT1 Formula Pacific.

Group S Racing Association

About Group S

Group S is one of the fastest growing categories of historic motor racing in Australia, with spectacular grids running in excess of 55 cars.

Based on mildly modified production sports cars, Group S is designed to provide a forum for competitors to race cars from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s in a form similar to period club racing. It is comprised of three sub categoriesGroup Sa, Group Sb and Group Sc.

Group S covers the racing of historic production sports cars. But unlike most other categories in historic motor sport, Group S cars do not need to have “a racing history” nor are issued “certificates of description”. Group S cars are not historic racing cars; they are historic production sports cars, modified within the limits of Group S eligibility criteria. Basically any historic production sports car within the specified historic period can become a Group S car. Group S therefore has a large pool of potential cars from which to draw. All other classes withthe exception of Group N require the aspirant to find or resurrect a racing car with racing history from the period in question; a more difficult task, and one which also places a limit on the potential size of that racing group.

Most historic race meetings in Australia feature Group S events, ranging from scratch races to endurance races. Regularity events may also feature some Group S cars.

Group S Racing Association

GSRA is a CAMS affiliated club and the purpose of the Group S Racing Association is to represent the interests of the owners and drivers of Group S cars in the course of participation in historic sports car motor sport. In particular, we aim to:

• Provide a representational voice for the owners and drivers of Group S cars

• Promote Group S motor sport, and

• Facilitate enjoyable participation in Group S historic motor sport

Richard Milligan MGB V8

My MGBV8 race car was built in 1995 by Paul Trevethan from Broadwalk MG Center in Melbourne for Doctor Mort Fitzgerald. I bought this car from “The Doctor” in 2013. It had won numerous VSCRC & MG Racing Championships and held track records in MG Racing at Phillip Island, Sandown & Winton. I won the MG Racing Series in the Victorian State Racing Championship in 2014, was runner-up in 2015 and 3rd in 2018.. This 1978 model MGB Roadster is highly modified with a 5,100cc production Rover V8 engine and a 6 speed Hollinger transmission. Top speed is 270 kph.

Previous racing.....

I started racing in MGCCV sprints in the late 1970’s, then raced a 3.8 MKII Jaguar at the start of Group N from 1980-1982, which John

Caine (ex Trevethan Apprentice) & I owned & built from a road car. I still have this Group N car.

I built a 1976 Model MGB Group Sc in 1998 and ran it in MGCCV competition events from 1999-2001. In 2001 I won the Post TF Specials class and then progressed to MG Racing in 2004. My Group Sc MGB has been very successful in MG Racing having come outright 3rd in 2009, 2nd in 2011, 2nd in 2012 and equal 2nd in 2013 with many class places as well. I have also won the prestigious Peter Lee Trophy three times. This car still holds track records for a Group S MGB in MG Racing at Phillip Island & Sandown.

Driver to Europe Feature Race

Events 29 & 41 Sunday 9.50 am - 8 laps & 1.50 pm - 8 laps

The Driver to Europe Series was the National Series for Formula Ford that in ran from 1971-1992, with drivers such as Richard Knight, Larry Perkins, Russell Norden, Tomas Mezera, Mark Larkham, Russell Ingall and Cameron McConville receiving trips to Europe, where they competed in events such as the coveted British Formula Ford Festival.

The popular Marque Sports Car Association’s (MSCA) Come and Try day will return at Phillip Island later this year, with car enthusiasts of all ages encouraged to take their first step into the world of motorsports.

The program has welcomed more than 600 participants over the last six years across Victoria and South Australia, providing drivers with a safe, fun and educated experience they will never forget.

Held in December, the event will include three informational sessions that cover the basics of motorsport safety and track techniques, as well as two on-track sessions with an experienced instructor.

MSCA President, Bruce Astbury is confident that participants will receive experienced instructors on the day to maximise their experience.

“Our instructors are handpicked from our pool of experienced competitors based on competence, attitude and communication skills,” Astbury said.

“Where we can, we match our instructors to entrants with similar

cars and to ensure we are maintaining consistency in our safety standards, we conduct annual professional development sessions with all our instructors.”

Not only will participants get the chance to get behind the wheel alongside an instructor, but there are opportunities for a solo run as part of the event too.

One goal of the club’s Come and Try Day is to further encourage women to get involved in motorsport with designated run groups for all women, as well as juniors.

The event aims to increase the number of women in the motorsport industry, with the club hopeful it can welcome more women and juniors than last year’s attendance rate, which had more than 25 per cent of the field either women or juniors.

For participants interested in attending the MSCA Come and Try Day at Phillip Island, contact Astbury on mscapresident@msca.net. au, or for those who have a Motorsport Australia licence, enter

the event entry portal.

The MSCA Come and Try Day will take place at the famous

Circuit on Saturday 2 December.

Continued from page 27....

Peter Fowler decided that it was the end of his race car ownership days.

In 1983 to ensure the car and project had a future, Bryan Thomson decided to buy out the project and came out of driver retirement to do this. The Quad valve V8 was retired, and a new development project started on a turbocharged Chevrolet V8 as the future power unit.

Bryan Thompson took on the costs and Peter Fowler continued with the development and running of the team and as a bonus became a paid team manager.

1983 was a development year, the turbo project was a challenge and a foray into unknown territory. The car was repainted Monza Red and the DG 300 Hewland gearbox was replaced with a stronger LG 600 gearbox. The car only ran 4/5 meetings and test days around midyear.

On top of all these happenings, the rules changed, Sports and GT cars were to run as one in the GT class. This opened up the opportunity for a new body style, so the Benz GT was created.

In 1980 Tony Ross on P plates raced the FX at AIR and won the Austin 7 Club highest point scorer for Sports Sedans over 3500cc.

At the end of 1980 Tony wanted to be more competitive. With help from Bernie Pfitzner (Performance Engineering) a Develco front crossmember was bought and Lance Walker (now Walker Chassis) built his first rollcage and a new midengine FX Sports Sedan was created.

Bernie built many parts for the FX including front suspension arms, steering, full floater hubs and axles for the 9” diff, dry sump pump, dry sump tank and pedals. The most creative work Bernie did was design and build a toploader gearbox that was only 12” long with no extension housing.

With the help of Bob Morris and a few friends we achieved what we set out to do, with the highs & lows. It hit the track in 2009. It was parked up from 2017 till 2022.

about all forms of motorsport - especially Historic and F1. I have an eclectic car collection that I love to tinker with, albeit as a very amateur mechanic. Infamous for my oversteer driving style, I was often seen drifting my short wheel base 911 on the limit, a new challenge in the 2017 season saw me bringing the big front engined V8 928 to the track - still sideways....!!! I am thankful that I get to share my passion for Historic racing with our fantastic Group S community

1985 Graeme Whincup Chev Monza Sports Sedan

Graeme built this Monza in 1984/85 in conjunction with John Riordan and Ron Harrop. It was always regarded as a most innovative sports sedan. It has a tubular construction with the 350 Chevrolet fuel injected engine bolted on to the front of the tube frame capsule and a 4 speed Hewland transaxle bolted on to the rear of the tube frame capsule. The car weighed less than 1000kgs and was fitted with Jongbloed Wheels.

Graeme raced the car very successfully from 1985 to 1998. He then sold it to Steven Voight in Queensland who was also a front runner with this car. In 2006, Steven sold the car to Peter Champion

who owned the Peter Brock collection of cars displayed at Dreamworld. Peter painted the car to look like the Peter Brock Monza (owned by Bob Jane).

Carey McMahon purchased the car from Peter Champion in 2020 and then set about doing a total restoration of the car back to its 1987 Blaupunkt livery. Carey’s experienced team of Rod Starr and Nigel Bolling completed the beautiful restoration in 12 months and the car was debuted at Mallala Raceway in April 2021 taking pole position and three race wins.

James Crichton I’m the driver and mechanic of the Red 1983 Ralt RT5 Supervee.

The Car was bought from America in 2010 undergone a full restoration by Robert Crichton over a few years

The car was driven by Price Cobb and achieved runner up for the 1983 Bosch Supervee Series. It was Cobb’s second chassis and was used in the second half of the 83 season. It had wins at Laguna Seca and Road America,

It’s an 83 chassis with ground effect sidepods, the engine is a VW Golf 1.6L with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, matched to a Hewland MK9 four speed.

We first competed in our white Triumph TR7 V8 in Sprints and hillclimbs approx. 25 years ago. I have slowly developed it along the way and now has a 4.6 litre Rover V8 with a Toyota Hi Lux gearbox

In recent years we have started racing in the MG and Invited British category while still doing Sprints with the MSCA. Having always been a work in progress it’s not the best looking car but has competed in hundreds of events over the years

with only a handful of DNF’s. Latterly my wife Shirley and I built a second TR7 for her out of the spare parts and now she drives her own White and Red TR7 V8. TR7’s can be quite a quick car in a straight line and are good in fast corners but TR7’s understeer badly in slow corners and can swap ends quite easily if provoked. However they are a fun reliable little car with 160mph performance for not much money.

Elfin FJ/Catalina chassis number 6316, being one of the last built. Originally owned by Jack Hunnam, the Victorian Elfin agent. You will note that the car does not have Elfin style mag wheels. The wheels fitted are as originally used by Hunnnam and also used you on another Catalina. I don’t know why he did this. The car is also unusual for a Catalina in that it has disc brakes all round. Jack raced this car, fitted with a 1500 Ford engine, in the Tasman rounds at Eastern Creek and Sandown in 1963. He then sold the car to Len Brennan who raced it in Victoria extensively during 1965 and 1966. On purchasing the car I was able to find Len Brennan and we had a number of phone discussions and text messages. Unfortunately, Len died in June of this year.

The car was then owned by Graham McCaughan. I have been unable to find out anything of his ownership but don’t

believe that he raced it much. The next owner was Geoff Dean who owned the car for around 20 years and during this time commenced a restoration which was not completed when the car was sold to Phillip Wheeler in 2015. Phillip put the car on stands and then went off and did other projects and did not touch the Elfin. Unfortunately, Phillip died in 2017. I learned of the existence of the car late in 2021 and was able to acquire it from Phillip’s widow.

The car required a full restoration and I ran the it for the first time at the April historic Mallala meeting. The car is very original, no rear sway bar and I suspect original springs and shocks. We had the shocks tested and they were okay. I decided to run it with these and see how it went and found that the handling was excellent, just as I remember the Catalina (624) that I raced 45 years ago.

The VHRR was established in 1976 to promote Historic Motor Racing in VICtoria, and where possible assist with its growth throughout Australia. Race meetings and speed events are held thoughout the year, giving owners of historic racing cars, and those interested in such vehicles, the opportunity to exercise their cars and feel the exhilaration of running such fine machinery, or just to be close by.

The club has been so successful over the years that meetings held at the Grand Prix Circuit at Phillip Island in February/March, and at Sandown Park in November, now attract some of the most awe-inspiring cars from Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of the world. We regularly see cars from the UK, USA, Germany, Hong Kong etc. Ferrari, A/Romeo, BRM, Maserati, Cooper, Jaguar, HMW, Maybach, MG, Lago Talbot, plus many Australian specials.

Many overseas owners and drivers find the warmth of the welcome at these meetings, the charisma of racing at these fabulous circuits, and the Australian hospitality, brings them back to this country year after year.

It is not necessary to own your own historic car. Many VHRR members join the club to be involved in the historic movement. To assist if they wish, or to merely enjoy the Vicarious pleasures of historic racing.

The VHRR caters for cars meeting the requirements of the 5th Category in Australia, or invited cars.

At race meetings you might see open wheeled racing cars, flashy racing sports cars. Formula Ford, Formula Junior, Touring Cars from the 1920’s to the 1980’s. Some of the cars are driven by well-known racing identities still keeping their hand in. A world champion might even make an appearance!

So whether you race, or just want to watch, the VHRR has full race meetings, hill climbs or speed events to cater for you.
