Was having a conversation one day with Rod Hatfield about getting involved with the VHRR in regularity with another car I have, I was a bit hesitant as I did not want to race it on the track but was interested in getting involved.
I was having a chat to a fella one day and he told me he had a log booked ex rally car rolling shell and a VT ss commodore sitting in his paddock for sale so I purchased it and the hard work began on building a VN Group A Win Percy/Allan Grice tribute race car to go have some fun in.
Stripped back and found a group A kit, paint & stenciled helmet and lion logo. Tried to make the dash, gauges and interior similar to the 16 car.
The VT donated the 304 roller rocker engine which was stripped down and 355 stroker built from the ground up by Auto Projects Ballarat who also did the drivetrain and suspension. Car is now Log booked 3D.
Plenty of hard work and money spent to do the era of the car justice, I think we have achieved that.
Was great when the C&A tribute sprints category started and there were plenty of people that wanted to get involved.
The camaraderie I have found with all the guys in the category has been amazing, we have all worked very hard to build our cars and get them to these events and are having a ball racing them and the wonderful response we have from the spectators has been fantastic.
With more people building tribute cars the category will only grow from strength to strength.

Firmly established as the Winton Festival of Speed feature race, this year’s Just Cars 50K Cup for Historic Touring Cars has attracted a near-capacity field and will be held on the Sunday.
At the time of writing, more than 40 cars from Victoria, NSW and Queensland will hit the famous old Northern Victorian circuit.
Almost half the field are V8s with 18 listed, headed by ex-touring car legend John Bowe in Joe Calleja’s ’69 Fastback Mustang. However, weather can always play a hand, with little nimble cars like RX2s, Escorts and Capris coming into their own.
New South Welshman Brad Tilley is always up at the front in his beautiful Mustang, but with five bigger-engined Camaros and the Aussie Monaro of Nathan Gordon entered, he might not have it all to himself.
On-pace smaller cars wearing down front runners over 50 kms of tight track has given the Cup great appeal. In recent years Mazda RX2s have done just that, with former Cup winner Victorian Peter McNiven returning this year. And there are three Minis, one of which is being driven by Tom Tweedie of NSW, swapping his fast F5000 for a flying brick. President of HTCANSW, David Noakes will be quick in his beautiful, front-running Twin Cam Escort.
Quick sixes have always featured on the podium and HTCAV President Ben Dahlstrom, in the ex-Les Walmsley Charger together with Craig Miles will be flying the MOPAR flag. But, they’ll have to contend with a heap of Holden Toranas driven by Brett Ferris, former champ Stephen Pillekers, Andrew Williams, Evan Gobell, Gary Edwards and Andrew Girvan.
Three rapid pre-65 289ci Mustangs led by current Club Champion Peter Meuleman, the hardcharging Bill Trengrove and Darren Jones will be
fighting for Nb honours. Later model 302 Mustangs will be hard to separate - Rob van Stokrom in his new car, Darren Collins, Chris Stern and Gary Finemore - all can be expected to finish well.
Variety is the spice and class battles will always entertain with six Cortinas, a couple of Alfas, a Chrysler Valiant, FJ Holden and a monstrous Ford Customline driven by Derek McLaughlan, all fighting amongst themselves.
Two other Historic Touring Car races precede the Cup on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning - it will be weekend of delight for all who follow this increasingly popular race category.
Saturday 5th August Practice/Qualifying
groups listed above may contain ‘Invited’ cars

The 1947 So-Cal (White/Red) & the 1948 Monoskate (Silver/Blue) - 2 classic examples of Australian ingenuity.
George Reed of Bathurst NSW built four “Skates”, all Ford V8 Specials in his career as an owner, builder, driver, during the 1940’s. A replica of “The Red Skate” is proudly on display at the Bathurst Motor Racing Museum, while “The White Skate” and “Monoskate” are still raced today and are held in the loving custodianship of Graeme and Louise Raper.
The name “skate” was given to George’s cars as, given their shortened chassis’, they were said to look like roller skates. Monoskate, a monoposto and The White skate, or she is affectionately known, So-Cal.
So-Cal was created in 1947, using a Ford chassis, a Mercury V8 engine and a standard 4 box as a basis. When Jesse Griffiths took it over, he added the Wilson pre-selector gearbox. Frank Walters started driving The White Skate in 1953 – he absolutely loved the car and during the next 2 years competed in between 70 – 75 races, winning the 1954 Racing Car Championship at Mt Druitt. However, when he became custodian of the car in 1955, he really started to improve its performance. With the help of American Alex Xydias, who ran the SoCal speed shop in Burbank, Southern California (the So-Cal name was born) Frank and Alex developed the car totally by postal correspondence. It was during this performance partnership that the Edelbrock heads were installed, followed by a Kong ignition. The next piece was a purpose engineered camshaft that was specifically designed to match So-Cal to the Mt Druitt circuit. Alex completed the project by sending out an Edelbrock Triple manifold setup. This setup is still run to this day.
So-Cal has been continually raced since 1947 by
George Reed & Jesse Griffiths, Frank Walters, Ben Sellars, Kevin Powell, John Young, Eric Worner, and since 2011, Louise Raper. Louise drives SoCal in Regularity events, Sprints and Hill climbs. 76 years of continuous competition. It should be noted that So-Cal also competed in both the 1952 and 1958 Australian Grand Prix events which were held at Mount Panorama, Bathurst.
Monoskate’s origins can be traced back to 1939, when it raced as the “Ben Tarr, Rajo Ford Special” at Mount Panorama. It then went through its next edification as the “Alec Mildren Ford V8 Special” and raced at the NSW Grand Prix, Bathurst 1946 & 1947. In 1949, George Reed created his last Aussie Special “Monoskate” and raced successfully at Bathurst, and Mt Druitt against the Imported European cars such as Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Alta, Bugatti and Lago Talbot to name a few.
“Monoskate” is a typical Australian Special built on Ford Model A Chassis rails, split (independent) front end and fitted with a 4.5 Litre Ford V8 engine. Developing approx. 180 bhp. Offenhauser heads, twin Stromberg Carburettors, Scintilla Vertex magneto, and three speed close ratio Ford gear box. Locked Ford Differential, Circa 1924 Brass FIAT Tractor Steering Box, Ford Hydraulic Drum Brakes, Armstrong Lever Arm Shock Absorbers, 16 Inch Wheels and original Aluminium Hand Formed Body that commenced life on its 1939 iteration.
This car has serious grunt with 100mph attainable in second gear and 145mph in top.
Monoskate has had a long and significant career with successes at circuit races, sprints and hill climbs. Continued P 17....
Our VH Commodore did 5 Bathurst starts. 1980, 81, 82, 83 and 84. Campaigned by Scotty Taylor who continues to be a part of NC today. Also partnered up with Kevin Kennedy. Interestingly, in 1980 Scotty turned up with a HOT 6 from their Sports Sedan Torana for Bathurst only
to be told that the set up had to have only one carbie and so this car raced Bathurst with a 202 and single Stromberg in the RE-CAR livery. Only commodore to race Bathurst with a Holden 6 cylinder. Continued P16....

Continued from P15...About me. Started circuit racing in 2012 with a Group C Gemini, (Ex Burnie Mclure car) progressed to a Group C XU1 (ex Neville bridges CIG sponsored car ), then progressed to a Group C L34 (ex Burnie Mclure Hang Ten car from Sandown 75 ) and now in the current Group C VH. The L34 was sold to a private
collector, however the XU1 and Gemini coupe are still in my possession in public museums where hopefully they will hit the track again looking for new owners. I have had interest in new ownership, however don’t want to sell any more cars to collections where they are lost to general public. They need to be ontrack. Steve Axisa
Continued from P12...
It was raced by George Reed between 1948 and the late 1950’s and then Ray Nottson. In 1977 it was rediscovered by the Reid family (no relation to George) who restored and raced her with much success over the next 20 years. Mal gave Monoskate a ground up restoration in 1998 and in 2003, Graeme Raper became custodian. Graeme continues to run at the front of historic racing in his class of the Group J & K. He also gives the Group L cars a run for their money in the Historic Winton Long Track and Historic Sandown events.
Graeme and Monoskate, have now raced together for 20 years and currently hold lap records, in their class, for each of the Victorian
race circuits – Sandown, Winton long and Winton short track and Phillip Island. Not bad for a car with origins back to 1939.
Graeme and Louise thoroughly enjoy taking both Monoskate and So-Cal out on the track and are normally at most of the Historic circuit and hill climb events in Victoria. Luckily being married and having “all things cars” as a shared passion, has given these wonderful Australian Specials the opportunity to continue to keep George Reed’s vision and memory alive and winning.

A vehicle manufactured as a family car back in the early 1970’s, has become one of the best loved race cars in Australia. It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, if the desire to race a car is in your blood, HQ’s are for you. We even have a number of Father & Sons racing with and against each other in this iconic category.
Historic Winton was the first ever racetrack I have competed in since starting my journey in motorsport, and man have I had some fun since then!
Motorsport has been an eye opener for me feeling that sense of excitement and thrill as you see the green flag wave, meeting so many amazing people who have the same interest and joy in showing and bringing their car to the racetrack, learning the history of motorsport and being part of such a fantastic community of people who are always willing to help.
A little bit of information about myself I have been competing and racing cars since I was 16, racing in Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.
I have competed in Hillclimb’s, enduro racing and sprint racing. I am currently studying software engineering part-time and work full-time for GPC/ Repco in the digital team.
This weekend I will be racing in LB sports in Bill Hemming’s Elfin Formula Junior 1962. History about the car: it was originally fitted with an 1100cc Coventry Climax, changed to Ford 1098cc to contest 1963 Australia Formula Junior Championship. Owned and raced for 30 years by Fred Greeneklee in SA (fitted with a 1500 Ford). Restored to Formula Junior specs in 2008. 3rd outright in World Series FJ Golden Jubilee in 2008. Continued P25....

Hotz family team of MG Midgets will be competing in both Group S Classic Sports Car Racing and MG Racing at this years event. Father and son Warren and Blake Hotz will fiercely compete against each other in Group S while wife and mum Tammie Hotz will put the number 70 Red MG Midget on the grid for MG racing. Our red Midget has been a race car for many years and was restored by Hotzspeed Restorations not long after we purchased it in 2018. The Blue and Orange Midget was a project built during
Covid to increase the opportunity for us to race as a family. Our team is based in the Blue Mountains NSW both cars are race prepared in the Hotzspeed Restoration garage with the small but mighty 1275 engines built by Bob Rowntree and finely tuned by Garth at Repair Restoration Services. We are looking forward to a great weekends racing program and welcome you to our garage to see our cars up close and have a chat. Tammie Hotz
Launched with fanfare at the Monaco Grand Prix in May 1958, the Austin Healey Sprite Mk1 (aka Bugeye) was created as an affordable sports car “that a chap could keep in his bike shed”. The little car with a big smile is celebrating 65 years this year - and is continuing to put equally big smiles on people’s faces when they see one - or better still, drive one! Just ask the happy members of the Austin Healey Sprite Drivers’ Club (AHSDC). It is a true drivers’ club which provides members with lots of opportunities to get their cars out on the road or on the track. The club is social and family-friendly and puts emphasis on enjoying your car. You’ll often find Sprites on windy roads with their ‘tops off’, participating in club-organised drives, or at a race,
rally or hill climb event. These diminuitive cars are very track-worthy, able to make some impressive overtakes in corners, and provide drivers and spectators with plenty of competitive and exciting racing moments. Australian racing and rally icon Colin Bond actually started his illustrious career in a Bugeye in the early 1960s. Whether it’s a road or race Bugeye, for 65 years these cars have represented the best value fun on four wheels – being a joy to drive and easy and inexpensive to buy and repair, these little machines represent the ultimate enthusiast’s allrounder. A true ‘sports car’ in every sense of the word.
Lolita Mk1 and its clever designer, Henry Nehrybecki
Lolita Mk1 has been around in historic motor racing circles for about 60 years. The name, “Lolita” is, not, as many of you might imagine, a nod to the famous 1962 film by Stanley Kubrick, in which an older man finds himself infatuated with a 14 year old girl “Lo” or Lolita, living nearby!
Actually my Lolita was designed and made in 1964 by Henry Nehrybecki who had migrated from Poland and who learnt his mechanical trade here in Australia. He travelled to England and worked for Eric Broadley at Lola where he learnt so much about racing car design and construction.
Returning to Australia he embarked on a career making racing cars, his company named L.A.D. (Lolita Automotive Developments), Lolita Mk1 was his first. And what a beaut little car it is! And to this day, really nothing quite like it. He was helped in the project by my dear friend, the delightful Ian Pope who subsequently raced, and owned it twice. (Sadly Ian left us quite some years ago).

600 My car (Chassis number #7006) was originally owned by the Bib Stillwell team and driven by Larry Perkins in 1970 and 1971. In 1971 Perkins won the TAA Driver to Europe trophy in this car, which sparked his international and professional driving career. The car changed owners several times before being converted to a Formula 2 car in 1977. It was raced as a formula 2 car before being converted back
to the original statues of Formula Ford during the ownership of P Turnbull (1989-2008). I bought this car in 2019 and am very proud to be the current custodian of this car with such an important motor racing history. I have been racing in historic cars since 2014, I first drove a Elfin NG formula vee before I raced the Ford. I love driving this car its very predicable and lovely to drive.

Elfin 600 1971 - Owners David Lamb
1971, then Geoff Taylor, Dean Tigh, Peter Finlay who I bought the car from in 2004. My racing career started at that time, aged 61 and had so much fun my son joined me sharing the meetings as we only had the one car. We then restored the car with Steven Brook in Sydney, who I believe won the driver to Europe championship in a Lola in 1984.
Bowin P6F 1973 - I purchased this car from Graham Mewburn in 2006. The original owner was Bob Morey who bought it in 1995, but no record of who was the original owner. Steven Brook knew a
lot about it and said he knows it sat in a shed for about 20 years. An interesting note, that Steven was working in his shed and a young girl walked in and saw his car, and said, “Oh, a Formula Ford”. Steven asked how she knew and she said “my Dad has one in his shed”, which turned out to be this one. A few years later Steven restored it for me.
Turning 80 this year in August not sure how much longer I will keep racing, but love the sport and all the people involved. I currently own a 1967 XR GT Falcon and 1966 Austin Healey 3000, both of which I have restored, so will continue to enjoy my cars.
I’m a quarry operation on the north west coast of Tasmania, who used to run a car in club events in the 1970’s – I’ve had quite a hiatus of 40 years, so I decided to build a track car for SuperSprints in Tasmania, which I have now completed 8 events at Symmons Plains and Baskerville.
My current car is a VK commodore fitted with LS3
engine, sequential Tremec dog box and a Ford 9 inch diff with TruTrac.
Last year I attended the Winton Festival of Speed which I thoroughly enjoyed, and so I decided to compete this – looking forward to it !

Bill had the shell since about 1999/2000, it was imported from California. Bill was going to build a Group N Camaro back then however there was some grey areas in the rules that were getting resolved. While that was happening, Bill heard of a really good Mustang that might be for sale in SA. He managed to get Clem Smith at the right time and he sold it to Bill, that’s been an awesome car since. Plenty of good work put into it to make it one of, if not the best, original Nb Mustangs in Australia.
Over the years of racing the Mustang, Bill had bought another 64/5 Mustang which he had planned to turn into a road car. Development of the race car had taken priority so it also had been sitting slightly unfinished. So in about 07/08 I think he asked if I wanted to turn into a race car, which
I did. Basically copied the good bits on his race car. it was also a fantastic car, I could never quite keep up with Bill though. That’s roughly when we started looking into finally doing up the Camaro, around 2013.
We had various people help us along the way, in between work and other racing commitments. The car was first raced 2017 and it’s been a learning curve for us since then, various things going wrong sometimes due to poor planning/workmanship and sometimes just plain bad luck. Some recent reliability feels like a bit of a win. We are still miles off the pace of other 69 Camaros like Aldo and Pauls (I think about 5 seconds at the island) but we are making some progress.

Griffs American in Ballarat imported the car for me in 2018 and we started on it straight away, I did a lot of homework on Moffats Trans Am over the years and we great picts for the replication. Tim and Chris Griffin and their crew are experts in restoring all cars so that was the easy part, I spent many hours there with Rodney as the idiosyncrasies with the build were complicated when going from pictures and if it wasn’t right we did it again. The front guards took many hrs. I chased many original type parts, found a original Tachometer and other gauges in the USA, steering wheel, seats, rims, a replica intake, even the same low oil pressure light from 69 was great to find. I was lucky to have a friend that could 3D print the rear view mirror on the drivers door, rare as a virgin in a
brothel, as was the cap on the oil catch tank cos we made that as well. Weber carbs from here, we built the donk at M&W Engines in Ballarat, Damien was great to work with and my idea was not to go over the top with it as it was for fun and not much racing, I need to reconsider and do it again for go not show. Same problem with the brakes, haven’t got any. If my wife Sue wasn’t in the groove with the build it might not have happened, lucky me. First time out on the racetrack at Winton in the wet we got pole by a fair bit, I know the track well as I raced HQs since they started, many years on the Thunderdome, Bathurst, and heaps of 4 hr endurance races at Winton. Toomas Heino Piirlaid 29/05/38 To 15/01/23
The Porsche community lost a great asset earlier this year, Mikki’s dad, Toomas Piirlaid or Tom as he is known to everyone. Tom was a member of the NSW Porsche club since 1973 with his beloved 1972 911T which he traveled around Europe after purchasing it new from the Porsche Factory. 2023 would have been his 50th year with the club.
Tom started Mikki’s passion for Porsche’s at a young age attending all the NSW Porsche club meetings they could get to. It was only fitting that when the owner of Indian Automotive, Kimm Garland, wanted to retire that he passed the reins over to Mikki. Mikki grew up going to Indian Automotive with Tom and his cars and Kimm knew that Mikki had the right drive and skill for his business.
Tom moved over to Estonia back in 1996 and moved back to Australia in 2008 and lived with Mikki and his family. They started to collect
Porsches and Volkswagens together, even trekking to New Zealand to hunt down cars. This is where they found Tom’s old 911T which they bought back and restored. Mikki presented Tom with his restored 911 for his 82nd birthday and even though he wasn’t able to drive anymore Mikki and Tom still enjoyed outings in it on many occasions.
Mikki started racing in Group S a few years back and Tom was his biggest fan. Tom would drive to Eastern Creek and park himself on the hill with his little stool and cheer Mikki on on every lap with a fist pump. They would talk shop for hours about the race afterwards.
Mikki’s note to his Dad
“May you rest in peace my beautiful dad and thank you for the amazing years we spent together enjoying the same passion.” Mikki Piirlaid

The Ford Escort Mk1 is one of the most beloved British cars of its generation with styling that quickly embedded itself into the British and European pantheon of humble commuter cars that good on the race tracks of the continent, the circuits of Australia, South Africa,New Zealand and further afield.
The car started life as a genuine, road going Twin Cam Escort. In 2004 it was purchased by Don Knight in Melbourne, Victoria who built and developed the car to a Group Nc Twin Cam Escort, competing in the car from 2006 - 2008.
In January 2009 the car was purchased by my father (David Noakes Snr) and was transformed from the Twin Cam Escort to its current specification, a MK1 RS1600 Ford Escort, powered by a BDA Cosworth motor. Car is prepared and maintained by Noakes Motorsport and Vince Macri and Tony Land of Macri Motors Race Preparation and Restoration, motor built and maintained by Colin Van Summeren from CAM Automotive in Melbourne. Continued from P31....
There was another Lolita, Mk2, owned for a time by my friend in New South Wales, Ian Ross, though I’m not sure of its current status.
Lolita Mk1 has a Cooper Mini engine/ gearbox mounted behind the driver and fully independent front and rear suspension.
It’s been owned and driven by numerous drivers including Bob Holden who was thrilled to see it again at Phillip Island about 3 years ago.. Ian Pope was a very competitive driver and with my purchase of the car came extensive records of numerous suspension adjustments and competition history. And nothing was thrown out, I have every nut, bolt, washer, ball joint and even old rubber bushes that were once on Mk1!
Actually Ian didn’t like to follow..! One track day at Winton he, in Lolita, was following me in my Matich SR4, right on my tail, corner after corner. Afterwards he got stuck into me. “Why won’t you let me get past you?”
I said to Ian, “no problem Ian, just pass me on the back straight, I’ll wave you through.”
Well, on the next practice session there was Ian, right on my rail through the sweeper and the cleavage and at the beginning of the back straight I waved him through. But I was 100 metres ahead of poor old Ian by the end of the straight!
Of course , the SR4, with some 550 BHP from its 5 litre Quad Cam 760 series Repco Brabham engine was always going to walk away from Lolita, at least on Winton’s back straight! And it was built also by the brilliant Henry Nehrybecki! When Lolita came up for sale, of course it was important for me to get it though by this time we’d lost Henry. Ian’s widow, Carol, was thrilled Lolita went to me.
Speaking of my Matich SR4, while it was owned by Repco (but in my care) we had an offer to acquire another “SR4” frame, allegedly built at the same time. I inspected it and it was similar in some ways but not as good. I checked with Henry and he advised me that he’d only built the one SR4 frame. Nigel Tait

The 2023 VHRR Winton Festival of Speed will once again host a Super Sprint field of 20 plus Tribute Group C&A inspired race cars. In 2022 the race committee introduced a Super Sprint format for combined Tribute and Genuine C & A cars.
The idea behind the Super Sprint was to encourage competitors with faster and bigger tribute cars away from traditional regularity categories and also acknowledging that there were some C&A guys who wanted to compete in a non-championship event giving them a place to bring some classics out for run.
The Super Sprint has been well received amongst a variety of competitors, which has since attracted further considerable interest from invited cars.
Category insiders suggest that there are up 40 cars either track ready and racing or under construction and going by the interest both at the last years Winton Festival of Speed and Blendline TV’s coverage, this category will only grow in the future.
The Festival of Speed race committee have supported and encouraged the owners to build these cars as close to Group C&A period specification where possible, but with some freedoms on access to reliability and rare parts. The growing feeling amongst the ownership group has been open on trying not to replicate existing Group C&A cars and keeping history where it belongs by looking outside the square for paint schemes of privateers and those cars that no longer exist. Some of the owners have seen tribute cars as great way to refurbish outdated or uncompetitive IPRA and Saloon cars into a fun track car with limited cost.
One insider said “We are not building exact replicas, these are a tribute to car from a great period of Australian Motorsport and we’re open to
invited classics which fit the concept such as the Denny Hulme IROC Porsche” “Great support has come from the likes of Aaron Noonan who has located rare photos for some of guys and Anthony Dove at HPS Motorsport Services on period engine builds as well as the support from some of the regular C&A guys on car builds, tyre choice and track set ups.”
New cars in 2022 were Travis Kirby with the Gary Cooke – Citizen Watches Commodore and Hayden Ivers in the awe inspiring Alan Moffatt Coke Mustang and its worth checking out the 2022 Blendline TV just to see that car in action as well as South Australian Martin Reynolds in a Mobil VL Commodore. Some special interest has come from Larry Kavanagh in his Genuine VB / VC HDT Promo Car and one under currently under construction is Dylan Innes with a Perkins Engineering VL Walkinshaw.
The Committee’s continued promotion of special interest invited categories is truly a way show casing the event as a Festival both at the track and again for 2023 - Live Streaming on Blendline TV through sponsorship partners of Shannon’s, CoolDrive, and Winton Raceway. The Tribute cars have planned to use this year’s event as a further stepping stone in making the Winton Festival of Speed a permanent part of their growing calendar. At this stage it’s a Super Sprint format but the owners see a much broader future as more cars come on board.
Who knows where this category may end up? But if you’re interested in building a car come and see the guys on August 5&6 at Winton Festival of Speed
