Welcome to the 36th VHRR Phillip Island Classic “Festival of Motorsport” to be held on 6, 7, 8 & 9 March 2025

At this 2025 event our Clerk of Course will again be Michael Herlihy, who is very experienced and capable in the role, and I extend thanks to both Michael, his Deputy and to all our Historic Race Committee team who will manage the “on track” activities over the weekend. I also express sincere thanks to the hard working VHRR Phillip Island Race Committee, and the VHRR event Management Team all of whom have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of this event.

Thanks also to all of the volunteer Officials, Scrutineer’s, Flaggie’s, Fire & Rescue Team, Recovery Team, Medical Crew, Grid, Pit & Gate & Paddock Officials without whom this event would not take place.

We will have cars from Grp’s J K & L, M&O, Grp C & A, Grp N, Grp S, Formula Ford, & Formula Vee, early and late model open wheelers and big banger sports cars and Formula 5000’s, as well as a large grid of Regularity cars. We will also see several 5 ltr Touring Cars in Sprint Format.

Thank you to our “local” Victorian competitors, many of you are regular entrants and have been coming to the Island since this events inception. I also thank and welcome entrants from Interstate, from all over Australia. Without all of you supporting us we simply do not have an event.

President’s Welcome

Our thanks to the Phillip Island Circuit Management and Staff for their continuing support of this event and for the magnificent presentation of the venue.

Finally our thanks for the continued support of our Sponsors large and small, and particularly EQUITY ONE, COOLDRIVE, PENRITE & SHANNONS

I wish everyone an enjoyable and safe weekend of great Historic Motor Racing.

Originally shipped to Carl Hass in America who was at the time the USA McLaren Dealer.

The car was delivered to Bud Morley of Denver Colorado in 1966.

Morley raced the McLaren for three years in Can-Am and USRRC events.

Competition consisted of some of the top drivers including McLaren, Surtees, Andretti, Hulme, Gurney, Stewart.

Having passed through numerous owners and having gone through a prolonged restoration it was purchased by John Bladon in the UK in 2006.

Current owner Laurie Bennett bought the car from John in 2010 and kept it resident in the UK for the next seven years.

During this period, he had the good fortune to be able to race the McLaren with considerable success on most of Europe’s iconic circuits including Spa Francorchamps, Monza, Zandvoort, Nurburgring, Silverstone, Goodwood.

EXCELLENCE

As any discerning car enthusiast will tell you, there are a multitude of exterior and interior protection products available to Australian motorists, but very few truly excel in quality and long term effectiveness. The United States manufactured 303 Products exterior and interior protection product range leads the world in the science of surface cleaners and protectants. These premium quality automotive car care products were derived from the development of the world’s first UV-screening surface treatments that were initially developed and perfected for NASA and the aerospace industry. As a result of this world first surface protection technology, 303 Products has set the industry standard for total UV protection on virtually any surface with their 303 Automotive Protectant, 303 Graphene Nano Spray and 303 All Surface Interior cleaner. Motorists who expect effective, easy to apply and long lasting exterior and interior vehicle protection choose 303. There are three premium quality 303 vehicle detailing products available to Australian and New Zealand motorists, 303 Automotive Protectant, 303 All Surface Interior Cleaner and the revolutionary new 303 Graphene Nano coating. Unlike other interior cleaners, 303 All surface Interior Cleaner can be used on almost any surface including vinyl, plastics, rubber, fabrics, leather and even on LCD screens. It is gentle and safe, but still has the strength to clean away tough stains. It lifts dirt from the surface when sprayed on and wipes off residue free. This product also helps to repel dust and dirt, and leaves a clean natural appearance on the surface after its application. After prepping the surface with interior cleaner 303 Automotive Protectant can be applied to create tough UV barrier protecting against the harsh Australian sun which over time can cause fading and cracking. 303 Automotive Protectant product restores lost colour and lustre from vehicle interior surfaces while also repelling dust, soiling and stains and lasts up to four to ten times longer than competing products in the market. 303 Automotive Protectant rejuvenates and protects tyres, bodywork, plastic bumpers, guard flares, trims and lenses, car bras, tonneau covers, chrome and alloy wheels, providing outstanding UV, dust and water resistance. When combined with the revolutionary 303 Graphene nano coating, these products create new-look shine and long-term vehicle exterior protection for up to 12 months.

2. The most exciting new addition to the 303 Products automotive range takes car owners to the next step beyond ceramic, with the 303 Graphene Nano Spray Coating. Transforming a matt shine to an outstanding gleaming shine, this state of the art vehicle protection product offers more than 12 months of premium protection. This unparalleled chemical formulation actually lowers vehicle surface temperature, thereby reducing waterspotting. The formulation sheds water quickly and can be used on any surface including wheels, trim and glass without leaving any residue. The 303 Graphene Nano Spray can also be applied in direct sunlight and on any colour vehicle. 303 Products represent the new generation of car interior and exterior products that need to be used to be believed. These technologically advanced products have transformed the formerly time consuming, expensive and labour intensive process of maintaining vehicle exterior and interior shine and stain resistance. The 303 Products range is available from quality automotive aftermarket parts and accessories stores nationwide. If you can’t find them, ask for them. To find out more, visit www.303products.com.au.

STA-BIL IS THE WORLD’S TOP SELLING FUEL STABILISER August 11, 2023 - Fuel stabilisation is extremely important for people who own valuable and infrequently driven vintage, sports, racing or collectible cars along with motorcycles, boats and any petrol powered equipment engines. STA-BIL is the American formulated and manufactured world leader in fuel stabilisation products. STA-BIL has built a reputation for excellence in ensuring easy engine starting even when motors have been idle for long periods of time. It is important to note that Regular Unleaded Petrol (ULP) begins to break down in as little as 60 days, while High Octane Unleaded (98+) can start to break down in as little as 21 days. Fuel breakdown reduces octane levels along with the formation of engine deteriorating gum and varnish. Additionally, all Ethanol fuel blends are hygroscopic, meaning that they attract and absorb moisture, resulting in reduced octane levels, contributing to fuel system corrosion and “white rust” within a vehicle’s fuel system. STA-BIL is a blend of scientific additives that act together to prevent fuel from degrading and oxidising during prolonged storage. It acts as a protective wrapper around the fuel molecules so they cannot combine with oxygen or other contaminants to corrupt the fuel. STA-BIL treated fuel will perform as though it had been freshly pumped into the fuel tank straight from the refinery pipeline. When added to fresh fuel, STA-BIL offers several major advantages:

„ Keeps the fuel fresh for at least 12 months (or a double dose for 24 months of fuel protection) ensuring smooth engine starting

„ Protects the fuel system against corrosion and white rust

„ Protects fuel against moisture contamination

„ Protects engines against gum and varnish build up

„ Eliminates the need to drain fuel

„ Eliminates environmental issues with the disposing of bad fuel

„ Maintains optimum engine performance Easy to use “Squeeze Measure” bottles

„ Metric bottle measurements for Australian applications

There are many petrol powered engines that sit idle for long periods of time, not only in cars but also in the marine sector, with boats tending to be used regularly only at certain times of the year. This also applies to seasonal agricultural, farming and general home and garden maintenance equipment.

2.

Fuel for these engines tends to be stored for long periods of time, lending itself to octane break down and moisture contamination, particularly when tanks are stored at half or quarter full capacity. STA-BIL is offered in three handy fuel stabiliser product bottle sizes, 118 ml to treat 38 litres, 236 ml to treat 76 litres and a 473 ml bottle to treat 150 litres of fuel. A specific STA-BIL Marine Formula is also available to protect expensive boat engines in a 236 ml bottle that treats up to 300 litres of fuel. Common misconceptions when it comes to fuel storage and preservation:  Tank draining - never gets 100% of fuel out of a tank or the fuel lines / pumps / injectors / carburettors.  Leaving a quarter tank of fuel in a car or storage container - the more air, the faster the contamination.  Draining and replacing fuel - not easy with cars and boats, near impossible to dispose of in an environmentally safe manner  Running an engine every few weeks - does nothing for protecting the fuel in the tank. Make no mistake, bad fuel can and does destroy petrol powered engines, STA-BIL ensures that this will not be the case when used for the stored or tanked fuel for cars, motorcycles, boats and general petrol motorised equipment engines. STA-BIL also offers a small engine range of protective products including a Fast-Fix small engine treatment and Small Engine Pro multi-system additive for cleaning out gum and varnish, along with the STA-BIL Ceramic Pro-Guard and Blade Guard product designed for mowers and trimmers. This premium quality STA-BIL fuel stabilisation product range is readily available from leading Australian automotive parts and accessories stockists. If you cannot find it, be sure to ask for it.

ULTIMATE UV PROTECTION

KEEPS SURFACES

Originally engineered for aerospace and aviation applications, new 303® Automotive Protectant provides superior UV protection for any rubber, vinyl, and plastic surfaces of your vehicle, such as your dashboard, windshield wiper blades, and even your tires.

Unlike many protectants that leave greasy residues, 303® Automotive Protectant dries to a clear matte finish without that sticky, shiny slick feeling.

André Breit (pronounced bright)

Born - Deutschland - 1957 Arrived Oz - 1969

Became involved with Datsun car in 1980. Restored a 2000 for the road over four years and participated in Regularity first at Amaroo in 1997. Got the regular bug and agreed with friends to rebuild a car that we had as spares for Group Sthe 'GREEN MACHINE'.

We first put this car on the track in 2003 as a 1600 in regularity, having obtained authority by the CAMS representative at the time, to change it to a 2000 later.

It has been participating as a 2 Litre (1987cc) since 2013. Overall the car and I have participated in 71 historic event at 8 race venues in four states. I have served the racing fraternity as a committee member for the GSRA and the HSRCA. I live happily in Sydney with my wife Julia, two Datsun's Fairladies, a Toyota and a Ford Territory.

Bailey Collins - Jack Daniels Commodore Supercar

Bailey Collins (19 years old) - this will be Baileys First race in a tin top. Previously raced open wheels. Fourth generation family racer. Collins #96 Racing. Currently coached by Thomas Randle.

Kelly Racing was created for 2009, utilising many components from the Perkins organisation, including the cars and PE 047 became the #11 Dodo entry for Larry’s son Jack.

He raced it through to the endurance races at Phillip Island and Bathurst, where it was re-stickered as the #15 Jack Daniel’s car and driven by Ben Collins (the Brit perhaps best known as formerly being The Stig on the BBC Top Gear series) and Nathan Pretty.

It returned to Perkins’ hands in Bet247 livery for Phillip Island and the Sydney season finale before becoming Tony Ricciardello’s #16 car in 2010 run in both Supermax and Stratco colours that season.

Becoming a spare car in 2011, it was wheeled back out for Hamilton for Rick Kelly after his new car had been damaged in an accident at Albert Park.

Despite being an older car, it didn’t stop Kelly from winning the Saturday race after a rain shower had affected the qualifying order – it was also Kelly Racing’s first V8 Supercar race win.

It was then the #77 Shannons Mars Supercar Showdown car at Bathurst where Denyer shared with the youngest-ever driver to compete in the Bathurst 1000 – Cameron Waters.

Waters ran it in the Sandown DVS round later that year and then again briefly in 2012 under the Dreamtime Racing banner before the program stopped due to lack of funds.

The Kelly team wheeled it back out later that season after Karl Reindler’s car having been damaged on the Gold Coast.

Originally this car was to become the Western Australian’s for the Abu Dhabi trip, though it actually became Greg Murphy’s #51 Pepsi Max car for the F1 event, as well as Winton and the season finale at Sydney – his last drive as a full-time V8SC driver.

The chassis was sold to Gary Collins at the completion of the 2012 season and it appeared on track at the Winton Historic meeting last year.

Collins races an ex-Holden Racing Team, Win Percy 1990 ATCC Commodore VL in Heritage Touring Cars but had PE 047 re-liveried to 2011 Jack Daniel’s colours – a reminder of its victory in that season on the streets of Hamilton in New Zealand.

Conditions of Entry

M&O Sports,

Motorlab ASP

Jim Doig and the Motorlab ASP

This is a one owner car.

Car was built by Rory Thomson and Ray Lewis in 1972. Originally fitted with a 1750 cc Ford engine.

Early 1975 fitted 1600 Celica engine and 5 speed gearbox.

In the last 50 odd years we have started in over 1000 races, and have had over 500 class (group Q sports) victories.

Finished 2nd in the South Australian Sports car championship in 1983, and 4th in 1988

I was SA CAMS driver of the year in 1979, 1990 and 1996

We held the Adelaide International Raceway (AIR) lap record for both the long and short circuits.

We held the Mallala lap record for under 1600 cc sports car.

In 1989 bored the Celica to 1944 cc and at one stage held the outright sports car record at Mallala.

In 2000 returned the car to 1975 specs, and have raced Historic ever since.

We have had a couple of bad accidents. In 2016 was pushed into the wall at Winton, and totally destroyed the rear of the car. In 2021 one of the cars in front of me went off the track and returned to the track immediately in my path. We hit the other car, flew up into the air, then on landing, took off again and rolled many times. The only bit of the car that wasn’t destroyed was the bit I was in. It took eight months to rebuild to original specs.

Plenty was going on back in 1975. World news saw the end of the Vietnam War, Australia went down to the Windies in the first-ever Cricket World Cup, and closer to home, the Governor General handed down a dismissal of his own, ousting the Whitlam government.

Meanwhile, AC/DC let us know it was a long way to the shop if you wanted a sausage roll, the updated Celica was released and the Crown and Corolla continued to roll out of the Australian Motor Industries (AMI) factory in Port Melbourne, transporting families around Australia. More significant for Toyota fans though was the foundation, just months apart, of the Toyota Owners Club of Victoria and Celica Car Club of Victoria.

Both clubs, based in Melbourne, shared a passion for motorsport and the Toyota brand, continuing independently until a merger in 1992 becoming the Toyota Car Club of Australia (Victoria). From that point, the club has grown significantly by embracing the Victorian Club Permit Scheme, regular social events and a continued passion and affiliation for motorsport.

TCCA was heavily involved in the Quinnsprint series before its demise, have been regular competitors in the Victorian Regularity & Hillclimb series events and now run Supersprint events over the Kings Birthday and Cup Day holidays at Sandown in conjunction with the Ford Four Car Club. That relationship between the two clubs has also seen the Group 5 Motorkhana championship flourish with regular events being held at Gilman Reserve, the clubs motorkhana ground in Werribee. Our members have also had success with Championship wins in the Victorian Motorkhana, Victorian Khanacross and Under 2 Litre Sports Sedan Championships. Behind the scenes our members have also given back to the sport, with accolades awarded to members including State and Australian Official of the Year and a prestigious Motorsport Australia Life Membership.

Social events have also been an important outlet for members with the annual Toyota Nationals (formerly Celica Nationals) in Dubbo a highlight since 1976 and monthly Car, Coffee & Doughnuts events since 2010. Through forward thinking and with a theme of inclusiveness TCCA became a central pillar in the wider Japanese car community with the successful running of the Classic Japan car & bike show since 2011 and Sakura Picnic all Asian car show since 2016. A strong relationship with Toyota Motor Company of Australia (TMCA) has also seen club members involved in key Toyota events including a large display of vehicles manufactured at AMI and Altona for the end of manufacturing events as well as club members vehicles featuring in several ad campaigns and launch events for new models as well as TV shows including Underbelly and Hamish & Andy's True Stories. Our annual Toyota car show Winterfest also returned to the Toyota Centre of Excellence in Altona in 2023 giving Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino enthusiasts a marquee event celebrated at the location of the first Toyota production line outside of Japan.

In 2025 the Toyota Car Club of Australia celebrates 50 years since the clubs inception in 1975. Whilst there are many great accomplishments as a club over that time and many wonderful members throughout our history, perhaps the most important aspect has been members coming together to support each other and enjoy their shared passion while forging life long friendships. John Culvenor - ELAN S2 1964

Originally sold by Geoghan’s in Sydney to Len Goodwin who raced it at Warwick Farm and elsewhere in the late 1960’s. Went through various hands. Purchased by John Culvenor about 8 years ago and restored over a few years from a bare chassis with a few modern safety features, but keeping original features intact. Has been registered in Group T – for as

raced in period. The restoration was finished 3 years ago and the car has already competed in several events in NSW. John has competed in Club Lotus events for more than 20 years in NSW in an Elise S1 which he still drives daily. He has always desired an Elan for Historic Racing and enjoyed the restoration process..

Graeme Hill - Mini Cooper S

I have been involved in motorsport since the late nineties, participating in club sprint meetings and hillclimbs in an improved production class Mini.

I began building a group Nb Mini Cooper S about four to five years ago, having supported my brother Richard Hill in his Group N endeavours, over a number of years. Progress was accelerated when more time became available, via the mandatory Covid

19 isolations. I debuted this car at the PI Classic in March last year and participated in four events that year including Historic Sandown. Unfortunately the car suffered a number of engine issues last year and as a result the Sandown Historic meeting this year, will be my first racing for 2024. I am optimistic that the previous issues have now been overcome and this car will provide better reliability and enjoyment.

Kim Shearn - Lotus 18

The most successful of 3 Lotus 18s imported to Australia by Derek Jolly in 1960. The original owner Jack Hunnam won the Sandown Cup in 1962 then sold the car to Rocky Tresize who went on to win his class in the Victorian Road racing Championship. Tim Schenken then bought it and ran 3rd running it as Formula Ford in the Australian Championship.

Subsequently the car won 2 Victorian F2 Championships and the current owner, Kim Shearn, won the Historic Formula Junior Championship in 2009. Kim went on to race the car internationally in Europe, New Zealand and South Africa, achieving numerous class victories.

Andrew Beard - 1969 Camaro

I purchased my 1969 Camaro in February 2022 from Graham Jarrett in SA, who had owned it for about 15 years. I did a lot of work to the vehicle throughout 2022, particularly on the brakes and had my first ever race meeting at the Island Magic in November 2022. I raced motocross as a kid but had never competed in a car before. I think I qualified 10th and finishing race 2 in 6th. I was pretty happy with that for a first attempt. I did further development to the car throughout 2023 but I didn’t get to race again until Island Magic in November of that year. This was mainly due to my partner Sarah being very ill with Breast Cancer throughout the 2023 year,

although she had been battling it for nearly 17 years all up. Sadly we lost Sarah on New Years Day 2024. As devastating as this was she had told me to continue doing the things I loved and to not take life for granted. I decided I needed to keep myself busy throughout 2024. I competed in about 7 different events throughout the year, including the Phillip Island Classic in March 2024. I slowly became more competitive and developed the car further and finished the year off well with a 2nd overall at The Bend Classic, a 3rd Overall at Historic Sandown and another 3rd at Island Magic 2024. Looking forward to 2025 and my first event for the year being the Phillip Island Classic in March

Dave McDonald Corvette

1961 #00 Dave MacDonald Corvette Spl

Dave MacDonald was the most successful early Production Corvette Race Car driver in Motorsports history. Dave wanted to race in the “Main Event”Modified class races against the best top ‘Factory Team Sports Cars’ from Europe. To compete, Dave needed a lighter weight Corvette and in 1961, Carroll Shelby directed Dave to Max Balchowsky, who was known for his successful Old Yeller Race Cars. Carroll had raced the 1959 Old Yeller II twice and breaking existing track records.

For Dave, Max built the light weight tube chassis, Old Yeller V, with a Corvette engine and body, which became known as the #00 “MacDonald Corvette Special.” The ‘razor-thin Corvette fiberglass body was slightly shorter and was slightly less narrow in width.

The #00 won 3 of its first 4 International SCCA, USAC races against the best competitive Factory Team cars from Europe including 250 Ferrari Testa Rossa, ‘Birdcage’ Maserati, Lister Jaguars and Road Racing Specials. The last race for the #00 Corvette Special was at the 1962 Pacific Northwest USAC International Grand Prix with Dave MacDonald racing. The #00 was then sent back to the owner in Hawaii and then was lost forever.

Original #00 parts, such as the custom Pontiac Front Drum brakes with Max drilled backing plates and original torsion bars were used in the resurrection of the #00 including an original Max built and welded Old Yeller chassis and an original, unique ‘Balchowsky’ front suspension of Jag 120 ‘drilled’ upper A arms and shorten Pontiac lower A Arms. The #00 was built using original large B&W photographs and drawings from the Max and Ina ‘Balchowsky Archives.’ The #00 had an extensive inspection by an Official FIA Inspector and the #00 ‘Corvette Special” was granted the Official International FIA recognition and validation, as the legendary 1961 #00 MacDonald Corvette Special.

The #00 was invited to the 70th Anniversary of Corvette at Monterey in 2023, for the Official Photo Shot’ of the most significant Historic Racing Corvettes. Doug MacDonald, younger brother of Dave, recalls meeting Zora Duntov, Chief of Corvette Racing at GM and his engineers from GM Corvette Racing Division. Zora came to Southern California to meet Dave and inspect the new and winning #00 Corvette Special. Zora was at that time launching the new Corvette ‘Sting Ray’ model and he was wanted to design a “Cobra Killer” competitive Corvette Race Car, as the new Shelby Cobra was receiving all the ‘press’ and interest. Instead of using the Corvette chassis platform, Zora duplicated the Max Balchowsky Old Yeller V concept of a light weight chrome moly tube

Bendix expands Ultimate 4WD™ Brake Upgrade Kit coverage

Bendix’s Ultimate 4WD™ Brake Upgrade Kits offer the convenience and efficiency of providing all components an owner might want to upgrade the braking performance of their four-wheel-drive in one package (available for either front or rear).

Why upgrade a four-wheel drive’s braking system? While factory braking does a satisfactory job for stock four-wheel drives, the truth is that many owners quickly add weight to their vehicles by fitting heavy accessories such as bull bars, winches, roof racks, drawer systems and other equipment. They’re also likely to fit larger tyres, which not only adds weight but increases rotating mass – this all means that a modified vehicle’s braking performance in placed under added stress.

The Ultimate 4WD™ Brake Upgrade Kits include Ultimate 4WD™ Brake Rotors, a set of Ultimate 4WD™ Brake Pads, a vehicle set of Ultimate Brake Hoses, a litre of heavy-duty brake fluid, a can of Bendix Cleanup, a tube of Ceramasil Lubricant, Bendix rotor wipes, with all contents packaged in a tough 60 litre Bendix Icebox.

Ultimate 4WD™ Brake Rotors feature four-wheel-drive specific metallurgy which increases rotor strength at elevated temperatures while also providing high wear resistance. They also have high efficiency cooling pillars,

that channel cool air into the rotor, expelling hot air faster, while additional braking performance is achieved through Bendix’s Diamond Tip Slot technology. This feature uses specially designed slots and V-shaped simples on the rotor surface to expel gasses, dirt and water more efficiently. Similarly, Bendix’s Ultimate 4WD Disc Brake Pads are engineered for extreme conditions and hardworking 4WD applications; they also feature Bendix’s premium Mechanical Retention System (MRS) for improved pad attachment strength, and a high-tech ceramic formulation that provide low dust and noise.

Rounding out the kit hardware are braided Ultimate 4WD™ Brake Hoses; these feature PTFE (Teflon®) tubing that’s wrapped in woven stainless steel 304 braid. This tough construction means they won’t expand under high pressure, ensuring a firm and responsive pedal feel.

Availability of Bendix’s Ultimate 4WD™ Brake Upgrade Kits have recently grown to suit even more four-wheel drive models including most early and late model dual cab 4x4 utilities and their wagon derivatives, along with the latest LandCruiser 300 Series vehicles. For added versatility, most kits have options to suit both standard height and plus 2” lifted vehicles. Porsche 917/30-005

At the end of the 1971 season, the coupe bodied Porsche 917 was no longer eligible to race in the world championship, which saw the German manufacturer's focus shift to the Group 7 class. In open form the 917 had been campaigned in this virtually no limits class since 1969, but with little factory support. Two championships were open for the Group 7 cars; the European Interserie and more importantly the North American Can-Am Challenge. Big engines, low weight and a host of different looking vehicles had made Can-Am one of America's premier classes, attracting many spectators.

Porsche was represented in Can-Am for a number of years by privateers who race 908s or decapitated 917s, until a purpose built Group 7 version of the 917 made its debut in 1971. Dubbed the 917/10, it was technically similar to the coupe 917, but featured a number of lighter components constructed from the latest exotic materials. A larger fuel tank was also fitted to enable the car to complete the 200 mile races without having to refuel. Completely new was the spyder bodywork, which was an adaptation of the contemporary CanAm design.

A few races into the 1971 season, the Porsche 917/10 made its debut in the McLaren dominated series. It was immediately obvious that the 5 litre flat 12 was not powerful enough to take on the might of the all-alloy Chevrolet V8s, but nonetheless valuable points were scored in the car's first season. Back in Germany two options to close the gap with the 800 bhp V8s were considered; a 16 cylinder version of the 917 or fitting turbochargers to the existing engine. The second option was by far not as easy as it sounds today, but it was expected to offer the best performance so it was fully explored.

In the preceding fifty years racing cars were either naturally aspirated or equipped with a Supercharger driven by the crank; exhaust driven turbochargers was uncharted territory. Throttle lag was the biggest problem to overcome with turbos. For optimal results, the turbines inside the turbo had to run at a specific speed, but that required a minimum number of engine revolutions. When the engine was running under that number, there was considerably less power, and when the turbos did kick in it was not a gentle affair. Drivers of the turbocharged 917s needed to have a very delicate right foot and stellar reflexes to cope with the sudden power increases © 1998 - 2025 Ultimatecarpage.com

VACC: Powering automotive for over 107 years

Victoria is largely that of VACC as well. Shortly after the first internal combustion-powered automobile was patented in Europe, vehicles began arriving on our shores and quickly moved onto Australia’s primitive road network.

Innovative Australians, like Harley Tarrant, began building their own local cars and, from there, parts suppliers and body-makers sprung up to support a fledgling vehicle manufacturing industry.

By 1918, Victoria boasted over 15,000 vehicles (largely imported) and 27,000 licensed drivers, and there were already hundreds of small businesses, located across metropolitan and regional areas, retailing, servicing and repairing the new transport fleet – cars, motorcycles, commercials, trucks and farm machinery.

By then, Victoria’s rapidly growing retail automotive industry – the selling, servicing and repairing of vehicles – was maturing and required direction. Automotive business owners desperately needed an umbrella body charged with protecting and promoting their interests.

Around this time, car dealers Henry and Percy Rickards foresaw that international counterparts could force burgeoning local companies out of the marketplace.

The brothers called together a collection of garage proprietors at the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce rooms on 20 September 1918 and registered a new industry association, the Retail Motor

In the interest of enlarging the association’s scope to cover all the motor trades, the association renamed itself the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) in 1920.

Present day issues, such as industrial disputes, hourly rates and skill shortages were already occurring, so VACC introduced a number of sectoral committees to address these challenges.

This was the foundation of VACC’s current operation, which is overseen by an Executive Board comprised of members from a diverse field of automotive operations.

To house staff and accommodate committee and board gatherings, VACC purchased property on St Kilda Road, Melbourne, in 1956 and on 4 September 1958 – almost 40 years to the day since its inception – Victorian Premier, Henry Bolte opened VACC House, the occasion celebrated with a vehicle cavalcade and eight-page newspaper supplement.

Now headquartered in North Melbourne, over the years, VACC has incorporated all facets of the automotive industry, including passenger vehicles, motorcycles, heavy vehicles and farm machinery in the retail, service and repair sectors.

Now known as the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce, VACC also incorporates the Skills Development Centre, VACC Automotive Apprenticeships, and Women in Automotive network, along with a commercial arm, OurAuto, which provides products and services to the national automotive industry.

VACC provides key business support services to 5,000 business-owner members, including:

• Industry policy and advocacy

• Automotive industry research

• Technical information and support

• Communications and publications

• Automotive industry skills, training and careers.

VACC was born while Aussie soldiers still battled in the trenches of World War I and has weathered the Great Depression, a second World War, the Melbourne and Sydney Olympic Games, the ‘recession we had to have’, dozens of prime ministers, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

During VACC’s 100-year long journey, the internal combustion engine asserted itself as the preferred vehicle power source, safety innovations like seat belts and anti-lock braking were invented, vehicles became ‘connected’ and, of course, electric vehicles and ride-sharing have already begun to dramatically alter the marketplace. Through it all, VACC has been there for its members – protecting and promoting them – so that they can be there for you.

VACC members constructed, retailed, serviced and repaired race cars from early days. From above left: a James Flood-bodied Itala competing at the 1921 Mount St Bernard Hill Climb; dealers, Garry and Warren Smith ran Holden Toranas in the 1970s; VACC member and multiple Australian Drivers’ Champion, Alf Costanzo in his Lola T430 F5000. Victorian Historic Racing Register Logistics Partner

As supply chain experts, we know how to handle valuable cargo. From the simple to the most complex, C.H. Robinson moves global freight around the world with ease.

In July 2011, a couple of men looking for an adventure decided that it would be a good idea to ride form Perth to Melbourne on motorbikes. This was not a new or novel idea. Many have travelled this path before and no doubt will again. But this is different and with a purpose for a cause. Not being motorcyclists it was agreed that it would be a better idea if these men rode “old postie bikes”, using red Honda CT110s which travel at the sedate speed of a maximum of approximately 80kph. The postie bikes allow the rider to cover approx. 120 kms on one tank of petrol and would therefore provide an interesting challenge across the Nullabor. Apparently this had been done in 2010 by another group.

As men do, they told their friends and colleagues. Soon this group

began to grow with interested parties expressing their desire to participate and share in this challenging journey. So a plan was hatched and formulated by the two leaders of this “pack”.

Men’s health needs exposure, support and research so it was decided that funds raised would be directed to raising community awareness of prostate cancer and associated issues and to provide support for men diagnosed with this disease.

Eight years on our goals, although refined, remain unchanged and over one million dollars has been raised through sponsorship and donations which has enabled us to work with rural communities to provide specialist medical equipment for safe, accurate prostate cancer biopsy.

Equity-One is an established commercial non-bank mortgage lender specialising in fast and competitive finance solutions since the mid 1990’s. Equity-One’s inception came at a time when banks were especially difficult to borrow from and Managing Director, Dean Koutsoumidis, recognised the benefit of private lending as an alternative finance solution. Acquiring a bank loan continues to be a predicament many borrowers face and clients want a long-standing player in the mortgage industry who have who have proven to be reliable and equipped to deliver.

Alongside mortgage lending, Equity-One is a respected fund manager offering fixed-interest investment products to our investors. Investors lend their funds directly to borrowers who in return for the loan, offer a first mortgage on a property, referred to as a security property. Investment opportunities are sent to investors regularly, allowing them to choose the security property upon which their investment is allocated. This model ensures investors know exactly the destination of their funds. It is precisely this control and security that investors have enjoyed which has led to the growth of Equity-One. In previous years, this practice was referred to as “contributory mortgages,” whereas today, the term “peer-to-peer lending” is preferred.

Loan durations are typically 12 months long, secured by real property across residential, commercial and industrial sites. Equity-One offers competitive and

attractive interest returns, directly credited to your bank account. Investors can receive interest monthly, quarterly, or annually, depending on the investment term that suits your needs. Investments start at a minimum of $10,000 with no maximum limit.

If you’re interested in investing and seeking competitive returns starting from 8% p.a, give us a call on 03 9602 3477 or visit our website at equity-one.com to enquire.

Equity-One founder Dean Koutsoumidis has carried a passion and interest in the thrill, entertainment and comradery of motorsport since the beginning of EquityOne’s journey. Being a competitive driver himself, Koutsoumidis found similarities between life on the track and in the office - a close interaction with others is key to success, communication is vital, and the ability to think on your feet and draw on intuition to make quick decisions is essential. Hence, when the opportunity arose to sponsor the Victorian Historic Racing Register and the Phillip Island Historic, Koutsoumidis jumped at the chance to support the local motor racing industry, its existing audience, and embrace a new audience of attendees from the Equity-One community. EquityOne’s competitive spirit and strong bonds with clients is reflected in our support of the Philip Island Historic. We look forward to continuing to show our appreciation every year at such an exciting event.

Noel Bryen - Rennmax BN-1

This Rennmax BN-1 is number 4 of seven built and is the only one still in its original configuration. There is one other in WA but it is not racing these days. All of the others have been converted to F2 or Formula Libra specs. Interestingly only 1 of the seven has not been accounted for. This car was originally owned by Kingsley Hibbard, who was quite a character from what I have been told. He “sold” it to Ken Ward in 1965 to settle a debt he had for mechanical work Ken was doing for him on one of his cars. At that stage Ken was running a service station at Boronia Park in Sydney. Ken was also the Morgan Agent in Australia for the well known sports car and was making a name for himself in a red Twin Cam Morgan around the Sydney race circuits. When the FJ class died, Ken converted the car to F2 and carried on racing until he hung up his helmet in 1971. It then languished at the back of his shed until 2000, when some of his mates (myself included) restored it to its original FJ specs.

Fortunately, Ken was a great hoarder, and all of the original FJ components, including the body, were in his shed, so putting it back together was a relatively easy task. At this stage, I had been racing for 15 years or so, first in Marque Sports and from the mid 90’s a Plus 4 Morgan in Group S. I build and prepare my own cars and started helping Ken get the Rennmax ready for historic racing. Ken had a few runs in it but we never quite got it going properly before he became ill and passed away in 2006. It is with much thanks to the generosity of Ken and the Ward family that I am having so much fun.

Celebrating 35 Years of Mazda MX-5, the MX-5 Club Vic Tas, and CAMS/Motorsport Australia Affiliation

2025 marks an extraordinary milestone for the Mazda MX-5 and its passionate community in Victoria and Tasmania. This year, we celebrate three remarkable anniversaries: 35 years of the Mazda MX-5—the world’s most popular roadster—35 years of the Mazda MX-5 Club Victoria & Tasmania, and 35 years of continuous affiliation with CAMS (now Motorsport Australia).

A Legacy Begins

The Mazda MX-5 Club of Victoria & Tasmania was born out of a shared passion for the iconic MX-5. It all began on 6 May 1990, with the Southern Hemisphere’s first-ever gathering of Mazda MX-5 owners at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick, Victoria. This event paved the way for the establishment of Australia’s first MX-5 Club, which held its inaugural formal meeting on 10 August 1990. With 167 members attending, the Club boasted the largest inaugural membership of any Motorsport Australia-affiliated club at the time.

A Thriving, Evolving Community

Today, the Mazda MX-5 Club of Victoria & Tasmania remains one of the most dynamic and inclusive automotive clubs in Australia, with a membership of around 1,000 men and women of diverse ages, backgrounds, and interests. The Club’s ethos has always been about embracing the spirit of "Jinba Ittai" (the harmony between car and driver), staying true to the essence of the MX-5 while constantly evolving.

Driving Together, On and Off the Track

The Club’s unique approach sets it apart. Rather than regular member meetings, the focus is on doing what members love most: driving their cars. With over 100 driving events annually across two states, members enjoy a mix of social and motorsport activities:

Social Drives: Monthly events organised by various Chapters take members on exhilarating journeys across some of the best driving roads, often concluding with a picnic or a shared meal. It’s during these moments that the community connects and celebrates the MX-5 lifestyle.

Motorsport: The Club organises annual championships for Sprints (8-10 rounds) and Khanacross (7 rounds). The Sprints offer an unparalleled opportunity to take on iconic tracks such as Phillip Island, Winton, The Bend and Sandown while Khanacross equally offers the opportunity to test driving and handling skills at the exceptionally beautiful Haunted Hills Hill Climb circuit.

Embracing New Frontiers

True to its pioneering spirit, the Club has recently expanded into the digital realm with the introduction of the iRacing Championship. This innovative addition allows members to experience the thrill of competitive motorsport in a virtual setting, ensuring the Club remains accessible and relevant to a new generation of enthusiasts.

Recognising Excellence

The Club’s vibrant community thrives on the dedication and passion of its members. This is exemplified by initiatives such as the Jinba Ittai Award, which honours individuals whose contributions embody the Club’s spirit and values. Across its 35 years the Club has also inducted 24 Life members, four Hall of Fame members and two Club Legends as recognition for their exceptional dedication and service tp the Club

A Shared Passion for 35 Years

The success of the Mazda MX-5 Club of Victoria & Tasmania is built on a foundation of camaraderie, a shared love for the Mazda MX-5, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive, engaging, and evolving community. As we celebrate these incredible milestones, we look forward to continuing the journey, honouring the past while embracing the future of the world’s favourite roadster.

156/85 Ferrari F1 Chassis No 79 and 82 History as at 2017

The turbo era was a very special period in F1, with up to 1200 qualifying horsepower available for brief periods from engines of just 1.5 litres.

The 1985 Ferraris were an improved version of the 1984 cars, with twin low-mounted KKK turbos on 120 degree V6 engines. Compression ratios were as low as 6.5 to 1, with boost pressures of 30 to 50psi. The cars had sleeker bodywork courtesy of the Italian aircraft maker Aermacchi, and were regarded as the most attractive of the era.

Chassis #079 and #082 were two of the eight chassis’ built for the 1985 season. Together they were raced in eleven of the 16 races of the 1985 season.

Michele Alboreto drove chassis #079 with his race number 27 to two 2nd places in the Brazilian and Portuguese Grand Prix on 7 April and 21 April 1985 respectively. Its best positions in the remaining races were at 4th at the Austrian Grand Prix and a 6th in the San Marino Grand Prix.

Stefan Johansson drove Chassis #082 under his race number 28 to two 2nd places in the 16th June Canadian Grand Prix and the 25th June USA (Detroit) Grand Prix.

Michele Alboreto was supported through his early career with Ferrari by a wealthy patron –Count Gugge Zanon.

Count Zanon was clearly so well regarded by Ferrari for his support to Alboreto and the Ferrari Grand Prix team of the time that Enzo Ferrari agreed to gift chassis #079 to the Count. Notwithstanding his involvement with Ferrari and Alboreto for some years, Count Zanon regarded the 85 GP car as the prettiest and best performing car of the period. He kept the car in his private collection for the next 10

years until he found that with his advancing years he wasn’t able to enjoy driving it as much as he would like.

Chassis #079 was always maintained and serviced by the Ferrari factory whilst it was in Count Zanon’s care. Alboreto drove it occasionally and declared it fit for active service prior to sale to its current owner, Guido Belgiorno-Nettis. Chassis #082 was acquired from the market in 2006.

Since their purchases, chassis #079 and #082 have spent most of its time in Australia and have been driven in demonstration events and various Historic meetings at Phillip Island, Adelaide Motor Festival, Sydney Motorsport Park and Hampton Downs in New Zealand.

Its current owner successfully races the cars in Group R in Historic events, using one or other of the cars as a “T” car. The cars are in the identical livery as they competed the 1985 GP season.

BWA - Paul Cooke

Thanks to Donington Auctions for the story below: The construction of this legendary historic racing car commenced in late 1938 by three friends Gib Barrett (brother of Alf Barrett), John White and Alan Ashton, thus the marque ‘BWA’ was born as acronym of their names. Curry and Richards Pty Ltd built the chassis from 16-gauge mild steel box sections. It was initially powered by a blown four cylinder 1 ½ Meadows engine from Tim Joshua’s Fraser Nash that had been racing during the 1930s. The front suspension, brakes, steering box, gearbox and wheel hubs were sourced from a Seventh Series Lancia. The body was modified into a two-seater sports (Victorian registration ‘AY.186’) and at Bathurst in 1946 Gib (Julian Barrett) recorded fasted race time and later at Rob Roy, it took the class record. In 1949 Gib redesigned the car as a monoposto. At Bathurst in October 1951, it was the first under 1500cc car in two races, also recording 99.45mph on the straight.

The car raced at the 1953 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park by Alf and Gib and finished 12th overall. Gib took the car to Fishermen’s Bend in March 1954 and finished fourth and later that year won both the under 1500cc scratch race and third at the main event, the Fisherman’s Bend Trophy in October. The car appeared at Phillip Island in the late 1950s with John Ould driving and was then inactive while owned by Ron Edgerton and Alan Grigg. With help from Gordon Dobie Alan the car was partially restored, apart from the engine which has since been replaced with a supercharged MGA engine. The project was cut short with the death of Ron Edgerton who had bought it back from Alan Grigg. The car was subsequently purchased by Ron Townley with no engine and needing full restoration. Ron entered discussions with CAMS in 1988 which resulted in approval to install a 1 ½ litre Lea Francis engine (due to the scarcity of the original Gough engine, of which only 23 were produced) with a GM supercharger and Lancia gearbox enabling it to run as a Group K Historic car. Restoration works were completed by David Lowe to 1949 specification, and the car reappeared at Winton in May 1997. Since then, it has regularly competed at historic motorsport events including Phillip Island, Calder, Australian Grand Prix, Collingrove, Winton, Mangalore, Eastern Creek, Sandown, Mallala and Rob Roy.

55 Years of Ford’s GT/V6 Capri

55 Years of Ford’s Australian-version GT/V6 Capri!

On 25th February, 1970, the 6-cylinder Ford Capri version, badged as the 3000V6, was released onto the Australian market. These Capri’s were introduced to supplement the already available 4-cylinder 1600cc powered Capri’s.

Assembled at Ford’s Homebush Plant in Sydney from CKD kits shipped direct from Halewood in the UK, the V6 Capri hit the market at a competitive price of $3230. For its day, she was a classic cruiser with lots of style and comfort, rarely seen before in Australia and powered by a V6. During its not quite 3-year period on the market, Ford delivered 3,014 GT/V6 Capri’s, of which 555 were fitted with an automatic option.

And, let’s not forget all those vibrant colours including, Candy Apple Red, Raw Orange, Peppermint Green, Blue Ice, Yukon Yellow & Silver Fox and with those stand-out body side stripe colours and the black-out bonnet treatment as well!

In its Australian assembled form, the GT/V6 Capri was very competitive and held its own against the LC GTR Torana’s, released just before it in November, 1969.

Scott Robinson - BMW JPS e30 325i: Age: 59 Lives: Brisbane

I have been involved with the BMW brand most of my career. I started as an apprentice BMW mechanic in Brisbane in 1982 at the then BMW Dealership Annand & Thompson, then City BMW and Brisbane BMW where I became of the first 7 BMW Mater technicians in Australia in 1988.

In 1991 I travelled to the UK as a BMW Master Technician to work for various BMW dealers around London for 7 years, then joined McLaren Cars as a Customer Care Technician on the F1 Road car. I spent 7 more years with McLaren working within the F1 road car and SLR development program before returning to Australia in 2004.

Not being able to find a suitable technical role here in Australia, I was offered to enter the sales world with BMW. This new challenge evolved into sales management roles with Lamborghini Brisbane and Lotus Cars QLD.

In 2020, I opened my own Classic Car restoration business Modern Classic Motorsport Pty Ltd SpeedCafe Scott Robinson Mechanic

BMW JPS e30 325i Group “A” #25

Frank Gardner’s JPS BMW Team built two 325i e30 BMW’s over 1985 and 1986. These cars where raced by Tony Longhurst in the ATCC and AMSCAR series ’85 and ’86 with much success before the M3 was introduced in 1987. With the two 325i’s only ever being on track at Amaroo Park at the first round of the 1986 ATCC (Better Brakes) 2/3/86. Gary Rogers running in the second 325i as Jim Richards chose to run in his 85’ championship winning 635csi. Logbook entries for the cars were hard to confirm in those days and the two cars were available through the 1986 season until one of the cars was sold to NZ in late ’86 and remains there to this day. My car has also spent time in NZ racing and returned to Australia in 2000.

I purchased the car in early 2023 from the estate of the late David Harris who campaigned the car for many years in Heritage Touring Cars. David was a very close friend and I was his race mechanic for most of his motorsport adventures with this and the many other BMW’s he had in his collection.

It was a real honour to become the current custodian of this car with the Harris’s family’s blessing for my passion to continue racing this beautiful ex Tony Longhurst 325i JPS Grp “A”, a true piece of Australian motorsport history. Scott Robinson

Warren Jenkins - Shelby GT350 H

The car is an original Shelby GT350 H, sold in Australia to a guy in Orange who purchased it new from Continental Motors in Sydney, then it was purchased by Ex President of HSRCA who converted it to do Rallies such as Targa Tasmania, then purchased by Ric Mark, again a long Shelby aficionado and HSRCA committee man who drove it in many HSRCA events. I then purchased the car in early 2000. We then rebuilt the car and engine with the assistance and guidance of Brad Tilley and suspension enhancements from Glenn Seaton We ran the car then for the next 25 years at Phillip Island, Eastern Creek,

Oran Park , Sandown , Winton , Wakefield, and Hill climbs including Murwillumbah and of course Targa Tasmania

The car has been well fettled and overseen by many expert racing identities such John Bowe with suspension from Glenn Seton and a new engine refresh, Its been continuously driven for many years without incident I have decided to sell the car hopefully at Phillip Island this March, I’m now 77 Years young.

Kevin West - Norax

Kevin is 57 he comes from a family of all forms of racing car drivers with his older brothers. Lionel who races in the super sedans at speedway and the bronze Aussie at the land speed salt races and Graham who races modified productions in his LJ Torana on speedway. Kevin raced Speedway in the Fender Bender class for a number of years after meeting his wife Tracey. After having 3 kids he took a break. He got back into racing Go Karts for a few years. Then he was so fortunate to meet an amazing man Peter Turner who took him under his wing, guided him and gave him the opportunity to race historics. They were inseparable and Peter claimed him as the

adopted son. Never a day went by when they did not speak. The bond was amazing. There were so many grand plans for the duo for the future of racing. But Peter unfortunately was killed in a tragic car accident in 2020. This rocked Kevin to his core. But with support of his family and Peter's 2 children Andrew and Jenny and their families. Kevin purchased the Norax. He has been able to keep racing dream alive in Peter's honour. It's a family affair with the west family racing. With Kevin's 3 children, partners and all the grandchildren who support him.

Group S 1976 Porsche 3.0 litre Carrera

Purchased 2014 as an ex New Zealand tarmac rally car - have all the history that shows that the car was very well set up and driven to quite a few podium finishes.

Started in regularity in 2015 before deciding to join in the fun of Group Slove the closeness of racing, the standing starts are very exciting and the camaraderie within the group is amazing, have made so many great friends in motor racing.

My last regularity was PI in 2019 and since then have been enjoying the competitiveness of Group S been slowly improving my driving and the cars performance which have resulted in some top 5 places and the rare podium finish. Just love the event and the racing at Phillip Island.

Steve Smith - 1976 Datsun 280Z

The car has been remarkably reliable (hope that statement is not just before an engine blow-up) since it was built and logged, in Queensland, by Bruce Richards in 2004. The car then passed to the chocolate king (Jason Lee) in 2006. Jason campaigned the car, largely as purchased, till he sold it to myself in 2016. Since then, my sons (Arron and Brett) and I have raced it – unfortunately both sons are faster than their father. We have spent quite bit of time developing the car including a re-spay after dad hit a walls at Bathurst and Eastern Creek. The wall affinity was fixed by locating

The Zephsca is a super charged Zephyr motor with a Raymond Mays Head, a Singer Gear Box and Austin Healey suspension. The car was built by Bill Miller in the late 1950s, Bill was a CAMS Stewart in the 1950s and raced Austin Healeys in the Melb Grand Prix in the 50s. Bill raced this car until he had an accident, after that Terry Morris (from Sirromet Wines Qld) raced the car. As a child l went along to the races while Terry Morris competed. I got the car from Terry as a 17 yr old in 1971 and have owned it for the past 53 years. I initially did Hill Climbs in the Zephsca, followed by circuit racing in 1976. I have continued to race in VHRR events most years since. I’ve won the Club Championship x 1 and runner up in Club Championship twice, along with numerous LB Sports class category wins.

problems with the brakes and dad adopting a new attitude. Brett has achieved some excellent results (despite destroying tires) within dad’s budget, which limits us to one away meeting per year. We have chosen Phillip Island (even if it is in the wrong state) as it’s the best track in Australia – we have yet to try the Bend (another geographical mis-location). We love PI and the whole family, including granddaughters, come down for the week to watch and pit crew as well as try the local restaurants.

Victorian Tourist Trophy

I originally started my motorsport hobby by participating in super sprints around Mallala Circuit in South Australia. I then progressed to tarmac rallying with an Alfa 2.0L GTV. After an accident in this, I realized how dangerous this type of motorsport could be, so I then took up circuit racing in Group S. I still do super sprints, but now participate in three historic group S events a year: Mallala, Winton and Phillip Island.

My car was restored to be a Group S race car from a standard road car in 2014 by Peter Axford and his team at Eurosport Automotive in Kenttown, South Australia. I race with Peter and my brother James, who both also have Alfa 105 Group S cars. Phillip Island Historic’s is the highlight of our racing year as we love the racing, the event and the holiday atmosphere of Phillip Island.

Dale Ashby (South Australia) 1969 Alfa Romeo GTV

Steve Willing - March 793-1

Chassis: March 793-1

Chassis Type: Aluminium Monocoque

Category: Formula 3/ Australian Formula 2

Manufactured Year 1979

Engine: Volkswagen Golf 1600cc (Approx 185hp)

Gearbox: Hewland Mk 9

The late 1970’s saw a rebirth of the Australian Formula 2 Championship using production based single cam, 2 valves per cylinder engines up to 1600cc in capacity. The 1979 TAA Formula Ford Driver to Europe winner Russell Norden saw Australian Formula 2 as the next stepping stone in becoming a professional racing driver and enjoying good support from Bonds Coats Paton, through their Gotcha brand, and with ancillary sponsorship from BP, Girlock and Prima Fruit Juices he had the financial means to select the best possible car available. Norden looked to the UK based manufacturer March Engineering to provide a car capable of winning, specifically their British Formula 3 Championship winning March 793.

The March 793 won 18 of 20 races in British F3 in 1979 principally with Toyota 2T engines, and had similar success in American Super Vee racing when powered by a Volkswagen Golf engine. With intensive ongoing engine development, particularly in the US that he was able to tap into, Norden saw the powerful and lightweight Golf engine as the engine of choice and when paired with the ground effect March 793 it was considered to be an excellent option to mount a campaign on the Australian Formula 2 Championship

In late 1979 Norden purchased the ex works chassis No. 1, driven to 3rd place in the British Championship by New Zealand prodigy Mike Thackwell. With numerous wins in that series, including the British Grand Prix support race, Thackwell also used the car to good effect in winning the prestigious Monza Lotteria Formula 3 race.

Despite the numerous stories told by Norden at the time that his car was a replica, for reasons that are probably better left alone, the rebuild process between 2018-2021 to restore the car back to its 1980 configuration uncovered several unique identifying features, confirming that the car is the ex factory built March 793 driven by Thackwell. These included chassis stampings, fuel bladder, bodywork and comparison of period photos of both Norden and Thackwell.

Whilst the Volkswagen engine was potentially more powerful that the pushrod Ford engine and Toyota’s used by others, it was fragile, and Norden’s 1980 campaign only netted two points scoring rounds (out of the four round championship), the highlight being a second place at Round 3 at Calder Park. Norden finished the Championship equal fourth, the winner being Richard Davison in a locally built Hardman JH-1

For 1981 Norden made modifications to the car including a centre post fixed rear wing mounted further rearward and significantly taller outer panels on the sidepods. Whilst these modification improved the performance of the car, enabling it to win convincingly at Round 4 at Sandown Park, it only placed in two other rounds in the six round championship and Norden fell to sixth place, a significant way behind the eventual winner John Smith in a Ralt RT1.

With aerodynamics being continually developed it was becoming evident that the emerging Ralt RT3 and locally built Hardman, Cheetah’s and Elfin’s had better ground effects sidepods, which the wide chassis of the March 793 with its comparatively narrow sidepods struggled to compete with.

In early 1982 the car was sold to NSW based superkart driver Chris Kane. With the car now resplendent in MOMO red and yellow, Kane did well in his inaugural year, finishing seventh in the ever more competitive championship with points placings at both Oran Park and Adelaide International Raceway.

In late 1983 the car was sold again to Neil Israel, who was looking to kick start his career locally after a period of racing in England. Despite the car still being practically in the same configuration as when it was sold by Norden, Israel showed his ability by winning the opening round of the 1984 Championship at Sandown Park. A third place at Round 2 at Oran Park in Sydney, and a second place at Mallala in South Australia, combined with other points scoring results at other rounds, saw Israel finish 3rd overall in the 1984 Championship. This was to be the cars best championship result.

For 1985 Israel contested the first three rounds of the 1985 Championship with the car, before transferring to a more contemporary Magnum 843. The car was placed for sale however was not sold until late 1987 to South Australian based driver Dean Hosking.

From 1987 to its last event in November 1989 Hosking only ran the car at local tracks Mallala and Adelaide International Raceway, together with several appearances in support races at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Adelaide.

The car was purchased in 2017 and an extensive restoration was undertaken. It is presented as it ran in early 1980 with Russell Norden.

March 722 – Shell Arnold Racing 1972

The Car and Team

In the 1972 European Formula Two Championship, Ecurie Shell Arnold entered a March 722, The car was powered by one of the first a 2.0-liter Ford Cosworth BDG engines, that debuted at PAU, the March 722 was a competitive chassis in F2, used by various teams during the season.

The Drivers and the 1972 Season

The team fielded three notable French drivers:

Jean-Pierre Beltoise, an experienced racer with Formula 1 success.

José Dolhem, a promising driver who would later compete in endurance racing.

Jean-Pierre Jarier, a very successful Formula 1 driver

At the Pau Grand Prix, one of the most prestigious races in the F2 calendar, the March 722 raced as car number 3 with the new 2 lt engine.

The Pau circuit, a tight and challenging street course, tested both driver skill and mechanical endurance. While the results were mixed, the car

Paul Doherty Dodge Special

I had always planned to get into some sort of motorsport, being a fan of the older style of racing I was always spectating and watching a couple of mates with their group N cars, going to Winton, Sandown and when a lot younger a lot of Bathurst on the mountain.

One day I just got sick of spectating and decided to get involved. First step Join VHRR as well as my brother John who has just started racing a Mini in Gulf racing Colours. He calls it Doherty Brothers Racing! I came across a Hartwig Special built by Bruce Hartwig and his nephew Mark. Mine is the fourth one built. Mark had been racing that car for about 10 years and had decided to give it away so I was able to purchase the car from him. Mark had been pretty competitive in his class, I’ve checked the Nat soft results, I have a lot of improving to do.

That was in sept 2019 then covid hit, so I decided to pull the car apart and to personalise it to my liking. One thig led to another and after a bout 10 months had, rebuilt the brakes, floor and new Sheetmetal, wiring, paint, enlarged the seating area, pedal box, wheel bearings, diff and gearbox leaks, also had to build new inlet manifold for the carbs and new linkages etc brake lines and bias bar. During all of this I contacted Greg Smith from the club, and he was extremely helpful.

left a lasting impression with its distinctive Shell colors. José Dolhem participated in multiple races throughout the season but did not secure significant results, while Beltoise competed in select events.

After the 1972 season, the March 722 was sold to Yves Courage in 1973, who competed in French hillclimb events with a 1.8-liter Cosworth BDE engine. The car then passed to Roland Davril in 1974, though his season was cut short due to engine issues.

Current Ownership and Racing Legacy

Today, this historic March 722 is owned by Angelo and Dorothy Orloff. It has been actively campaigned in historic racing events by Andrew McInnes, who regularly drives it in competition. McInnes has showcased the car at various events, including the Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport.

However, for an exciting change, this weekend the car will be driven by Supercars racer Thomas Randle, bringing new energy to its rich history.

The March 722 remains an important piece of Formula 2 history, embodying the engineering innovation and competitive spirit of early 1970s motorsport

I have since been introduced to all the other Group JKL guys.

The Car has a KEW engine which is a Chrysler side valve and is 250 Cui. Performance wise it makes about 120 hp at the wheels. It has 3 X Carter ball and ball carbs. Just running on 98 PULP at the moment.

During covid we were given an opportunity to test and tune at Winton and after two laps the motor gave up. Another year passes sourcing parts, covid delays and finally I have it back together and running for a test and tune prior to my first outing at the Geelong revival 2022. Then to Rob Roy a couple of times with my first circuit race in reg at Winton historic 2023. Got my “P” plates at Winton FOS last year then to Sandown, Phillip Island and Winton Historic This year. I have met the most pleasant bunch of like minded people so far and have wondered why I took so long to get into it.

The best thing I like about group k is that its reasonably affordable and if you’re a bit mechanically minded you can do most of the work and development on your car yourself. No two of these cars are the same so it’s a challenge for you only to get the most out of it. ,

Patron’s Statement

I am honoured to have been the official patron of The Male Bag Ride/Foundation since April 2013, when 25 men decided to ride ex-postie Honda 110 motorcycles from Perth to Melbourne. Moving forward we have since organised a further five rides, round Tasmania in 2014, Victoria in 2015, Gippsland in 2016, Echuca/Moama region in 2017 and Victoria/Canberra/NSW in 2018.

Following the initial Perth to Melbourne ride work began to establish the foundation as a registered not-for-profit charity. We can now proudly say every cent of fund raising is directed to prostate care outcomes in regional areas - outcomes that would otherwise not be met.

Supported by so many people (riders, crew, sponsors, families and general public) we have now collected in excess of $1 million. This is used to raise awareness, purchase public hospital testing equipment, and provide patient nursing support, to fight prostate cancer in Australia.

It is important that we continue to spread the word about prostate cancer, in the hope that we can save more men from this insidious disease that kills over 3000 Australian men every year. Our website www.themalebagfoundation.org.au will provide you with more details of how you can help us with this work.

Pro-Sport 3000 General Description and Specifications. Prosport-3000’s were built from 1992 until 1997, with approximately 22 examples built.

They were designed by ex-March engineer, Arthur Griffin. The goal was to produce a relatively low cost sports car series for the 1990’s for both semi-pro teams as well as amateur drivers coming up through the ranks. The Prosport-3000 cars raced in the U.K. Interseries races in Division 2, and the British GT Series against competitors such as Lola, March, Spice, Tiga, Argo and others. The Gulf car was one of three Prosports entered in LeMans in 1992, but since Group C was at death’s door in that year, the owners could not justify the expense and all 3 cars were officially classified as DNA., Both Cars are listed for sale here in Australia.

Ray Narkiewicz - Corvette C2

Was purpose-built fiberglass-bodied two-seater billed as 'America's only true sports car'. This 1965 Chevrolet Corvette started life as a late-production L76-powered coupe, imported to Australia in 2010 and has been race prepared by JKJ automotive in Melbourne. As with all Group S category cars the mild modifications allowed make the Corvettes star attractions at historic race meetings not only for their unique looks, but also for their raw sound of the rumbling V8s. The car still presents in

the original Nassau Blue paintwork and powered by a highcompression 327ci V8 small block, a Muncie M22 4-speed gearbox and 3.7 Posi-traction rear end.

This Group Sb race car has now competed in over 60 national events, and continues to be a competitive front runner, prefer-ring high horsepower tracks, however , continuous suspension and handling improvements now make it a much friendlier proposition on the shorter tracks.

The Alan Jones Trophy

My Name is Robbie and I own a lovely 1968 Black Badge Lotus Elan FHC which I have owned since 1983. It was a project when I purchased it and with little money and time to spend on it progress was very slow, so it wasn't 'til later years that I managed to get it finished and I must say that it nearly got sold on a few occasions and but for my wife Barb stepping in it probably would have been. So here I am from WA at Phillip Island in 2025 living my dream of driving my Elan on what most would claim to be right up there with the best racing circuits in the world. Looking forward to this so much and seeing what can be described as a wonderful collection of old Classics.

Thanking you all .

Regards, Robbie Rhoades from across the Nullabor.

Peter Lucas - The Pye Car

I have entered two RT4s. I am driving one and the other is being driven by William Lowing

The car William is driving is the ex John Bowe Lucky Nuts car which was the first RT4 imported to Australia in 1981. John drove this car from 81-83 including at the Australia GP in each of those years. In 1984 John acquired a new RT4 and the original Lucky Nuts car was driven by French F1 driver Francois Hesnault in the 84 Australian GP. Francois was classified as a non finisher after incurring steering damage in an incident with Bruce Connelly.

The car I am driving is a 1986 model and is an ex Ralt Australia team car. In early 1986 it won the NZ Formula Pacific Championship in the hands of American Jeff McPherson. The two Ralt Australia cars between them won every race of the championship with Jeff McPherson winning 4 races and his teammate Ross Cheever winning the other 3. During the remainder of 1986 it returned to Australia and was the sister car to that driven by Graham Watson to championship victory. In the first 3 rounds of the Australian Gold Star it was driven by Bap Romano and after he suffered serious injuries in his Kaditcha Sports Car, Graham invited Ken Smith of NZ to come and be his team mate for the remaining rounds. In the three rounds Bap contested he finished second at Sandown and Adelaide and first at Wanneroo to be leading the championship. Ken Smith finished first at Calder and Winton (with Graham Watson 2nd in both), didn’t compete at Oran Park and suffered a crash at Amaroo Park. The car then was sent to NZ as the spare car for the 1987 Formula Pacific Championship where Ralt Australia fielded two new 1987 RT4s for Mike Thackwell and David Brabham. David elected to drive the older spare car as he preferred the handling of the 1986 model and he finished 6th in the championship (victory going to Mike Thackwell).

Morne Lombard

Born in South Africa in 1971 and moved to Australia in 2000,Married with 4 Children all now young Adults, hence some time back to go racing again… In the finance Industry but spent Several years in the Automotive Industry, Including in Australia owning a small Workshop in QLD from 2000 to 2007.

My Race car driving started in South Africa in 1992 After I Completed my Studies in Electronics but ended up in the Automotive Industry where I did part time work during my studying, as my older brother had Married into a family business that remanufactured CV Joints.

The owner my brother's Father in Law had raced since he was Young in Rhodesia claiming several national Titles (Zimbabwe) and had amassed a large collection of vintage, Classic and Racecars. We supported a lot of drivers with sponsorships.

I moved to Australia in 2000 and did some karting but Life with 4 Kids got too busy to keep at it. In 2021 I bought a Ford Escort Mk1 RS 2000 clone, and Whilst looking to get some work done on it was introduced to Errol who had just listed his Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600 and I decided to buy that to start with Group N Racing , So in 2022 I started racing again with Historic race car club QLD and QHTCA. In my First year 2022 stated collecting a few trophies and I got Rookie of the year with QHTCA and Group NC Under 2lt Champion with HRCC. In 2023 I backed up again and got Group Nc Under 2lt Champion and second place overall in QHTCA with an engine failure in the last race of the year causing me to miss out from getting a QHTCA Win. but that’s racing..

In 2024 got the Group NC Under 2lt Championship with HRCC For the 2024 season, I was privileged to be treasurer for the HRCC allowing me to meet and chat with more members.

My Brother and I were lucky enough to get to use these for races

Team Swinburne Formula SAE is a student-led motorsport team from Swinburne University of Technology.

The team, founded in 1999, allows for students across the entirety of the university to participate in crossdisciplinary collaboration and facilitates the practical application of theoretical classroom knowledge. Each year Team Swinburne Formula SAE strives to design, build, and compete a formulastyle electric racecar for the Formula SAE-A competition.

At the competition, the team competes against other university’s teams from across the country and internationally.

All of the teams are evaluated on vehicle performance, management processes, engineering design, and business operation through a series of dynamic and static events.

Currently the team is working towards building its first ever all-wheel drive electric racecar with hub motors, TS_22, in preparation for the 2022 Formula SAE-A competition.

This will make us only one of a few teams to have made the transition to building and competing an all-wheel drive electric racecar.

Team Swinburne Formula SAE is also in the process of completing our first ever autonomous racecar for competition, converting our 2019 contender TS_19, into an autonomous vehicle.

Dean Briggs - 1981 Spectre Formula Vee

Growing up in a motorsport family and seeing my dad (Brian Briggs) racing various cars and restoring many cars for himself and customers over the years it was inevitable that I’d end up racing something historic.

I have had my eyes on formula Vees since the early 1980’s as this was the most exciting, close, open wheeler racing I had ever seen. Before I purchased the Vee I came to this awesome event year after year dreaming of owning a car and participating, now here I am, I just had to do it.

In 2016 I purchased my car, a 1981 Spectre Formula Vee, in a rather sorry state and commenced the restoration work, this took me until July of the following year to get on track. The car has an extensive Victorian race history, originally built in 1981 from a kit purchased by the late Ken Dodge. I was thrilled to receive a letter from Kens wife when she learned I had restored the car back to its original look and was enjoying it as much as he did.

The paint scheme it adorns today closely resembles its original livery, even its original race number of 5.

I’m also restoring a 1984 Elfin NG EP Formula Vee back to its original factory raced livery. I’ve always wanted an Elfin, hopefully it will be here next year. Since the restoration I have loved the experience of travelling with my best mate, two brothers and dad to SMP, Wakefield, Sandown, One Raceway, Winton & Phillip Island to race my Historic Formula Vee. The journey so far has been brilliant. The friends I have made, the people I have met, it has all been amazing. Nine years on and I’ve scored a few wins, my first here at the Classic a few years back, but most importantly I’ve had awesome fun just being out on track racing. Vees are unique to drive, the cornering capability is much better than you would imagine, but the straightline performance not so, but when you come to Phillip Island the slip stream is so important. If you get it right it can improve your lap time by 2-3 seconds per lap.

I’m also the President of the HFVAA (Historic Formula Vee Association of Australia), which is an honour for

me as a fan of the category and sport. This year is the celebration of 60 years of Formula Vee in Australia. The history we have here in Australia is extensive. In my opinion, Historic Formula Vee is simply the best value for money, fun, exciting open wheeler motorsport in Australia. Our Vb class has just received approval from Motorsport Australia to extend the eligibility cutoff date from Dec 1985 to Dec 1991. We are excited to provide the opportunity for additional cars join us out on track and save these precious cars from rotting away in garages all over the country.
