Holds a Diplome DNSBA Ecole Nacional superieur de Beaux-Arts. Paris. France
(2009), Specialization in Multimedia’s Creation (2006) and BFA from Universidad de los Andes, Bogota (2004). Castaneda is an associate Professor at Universidad de los Andes and Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano y Javeriana, Bogota. She has exhibited widely in Colombia and has participated in the CRAC Residence, Chile (2011) and BATISCAFO Residence, Cuba (2006). In 2013 she organized Pintura Abierta, a collaborative project that prompted the circulation of ideas about painting. In an attempt to consider this language through its practice, the creation and reflection laboratory gathered different proposals by Colombian painters by means of on-site paintings. The project took place in the Parqueadero space of the Museo del Banco de la República.
Her work expands the limits of drawing and painting, bringing them closer to
sculpture, creating topographies that reveal themselves through their interaction with the observer. The atmospheric patterns and gestural impulses retain the poetic approach of craftsmanship in order to get immersed into the landscape through unexpected encounters. She works the territory from cartography for free ranging, departing from emotion, memory, the journey and mysticism, and seeking a respectful sight of the environment to restore the essential and spiritual connection with nature.

Wandering Rocks Installations on table + Drawings and Porcelains Drawings:z Graphite on Paper + 24 x 33 cm Porcelains: variables dimensions, 16 x 12 x 10 cm aprox In the face of time and desires, there is a wide space led by chance and destiny. The actions together with the events surrender to the current of time, transforming the riverbed and therefore the land and the body. One thing leads to the other; one rock slips, hits and brakes herself, each part takes a different slope in order to be buried and joined the earth again. This is how I came to feel the mountain and the river, I walked a long distance to achieve an intimate approach, with the sacred, with the collective. As a kind of pilgrimage to find myself in the Himalayas and being able to touch the Ganges. Remembering the essence of its nouns: River and Mountains: Flowing and Stillness. The mountains contain rivers and the rivers draw the perimeters of the mountains. Wandering Rocks mentions this nature. The required mobility of the immobile, the stillness that belongs to the current. A series of liquid surfaces, drawings of water in different states, are placed randomly on the table. Portraits of what is naturally moving, quiets the tide to display the present, it’s so close and fast, as each passing second. These drawings of still water provide a geography of liquid appearance. Geography in which porcelain objects are found drifting. A finger, a flower, a can, a small stick, a cube, a crystal and other things are tending to move, like the pieces on a board game. This is how, on the board, situations and encounters arise, providing symbolic answers for those who want to read life while giving meaning to the present atmosphere Domestic Caves form the inside of a mountain, one niche done to scale in order to remember the idea of a shelter, a safe place. Shapes breaking the outside while opening the inside. A place that suggests meditation, as a way of looking inside in order to irradiate outside. Reflecting a color to see it from different angles. In the end, River Waters (video) took me to the Magdalena River to retake a lost scene, to recreate an idea from the past. Despite the cycles and even if the actions repeat themselves, the waters will never be the same. As the rocks are back to the earth, the river becomes the sea. Natalia Castaùeda A.

The Anthropocene is a term that serves to describe the current geological period in Earth’s history. During this stage, human activity has had a significant global impact on the transformation of the planet, similar to those from natural phenomena. ”River” proposes a full cycle of creation and transformation of a terrain, a scale-space representation warning about the mankind’s impact on the landscape. This artwork is composed by numerous plaster droplets that hardens to stone followed by a Drawing intervention from the public. As collective creation where the material forms the riverbed and the drawing strokes return fluidity to the river. At the end of the show, this piece is offered to the natural cycle of change, to the time that transforms matter. The river becomes the ground for walking reflecting the power of transformation in mankind’s progress.

Laboratory OPEN PAINTING + MUSEE BANCO DE LA REPUBLICA + BOGOTÁ + 2013 Open Painting is a laboratory to create and reflect upon pictorial and painterly processes organized by Natalia Castañeda and Jessica Angel. This project proposes a collective working initiative motivating the circulation of ideas with regards to painting. In order to thinking about this medium throughout practice, we gathered, by invitation and by an open call, different proposals by Colombian painters who all created a collective site-specific painting in the space “El Parqueadero” in the Museum of the Bank of Colombia. We opened a window to the intimate space where painters create and revealed their different strategies through conversation, visual and live interventions, conferences, and biographical and audiovisual material, with the purpose of deepening and analyzing different proposals happening now around this media.

Beloved Future uses New York City as a framework to connect a series of longings on its waste and treasures, composing an iconographic narrative of a futuristic archeology.
