TEDS takes centre stage The 2010 TETRA World Congress has opened with a raft of announcements around the availability of TETRA Enhanced Data Services, known as TEDS. This marks a significant shift in the capabilities of TETRA networks and devices, and will enable the technology to be even more valuable to the critical communications user. Phil Godfrey, Chairman of industry representative The TETRA Association, said: “The availability of TEDS is a very important step forward for TETRA as it demonstrates the continuing development of the standard. This is essential to maintain TETRA as a vital and advancing technology.”

Complete suite from Motorola Motorola has chosen this week’s event to announce TEDS-capable radios and infrastructure, headed by the MTM5400 radio, the first TETRA mobile with voice and TEDS capability. The MTM5400 also includes advanced local networking capabilities, as well as over-the-air programming – an industry first – to enable more efficient fleet management. Critical communications users can benefit from higher data speeds through the integrated TEDS capability, delivering an increase in data throughput of 20x or more to back office systems and remote databases. The radio also includes an integrated repeater-gateway function and a 10W transmission power capability to ensure secure and resilient communication, regardless of coverage availability. The world’s smallest TEDScapable base station has also been launched by Motorola. The MTS1 provides a range of adaptable indoor and outdoor implementation solutions, including wall- and pole- mounted installation options for enhanced coverage inside buildings and tunnels. The MTS4E completes Motorola’s hardware launch line-up this week. The world’s first multi-band TETRA base station, the TEDS-capable MTS4E enables operators with access to multi-

ple frequency bands to maximise network capacity. The MTS4E has already been delivered to Airwave in the UK. The MTS1 and MTS4E base stations have been designed to support Motorola’s new Dimetra™ 7.1 software platform. This is designed to provide mission critical end users such as police, fire or ambulance services with a range of capabilities that allow simplified, higher-speed access to data, improved network security and flexible network capacity and coverage. “The introduction of the Dimetra 7.1 software platform reaffirms our support for the industry trend of evolving mission critical networks,” said Jens Kristiansen, vice president and ge-

In the field, TEDS is currently being tested by State Security Networks, operator of the Finnish VIRVE network, using equipment from EADS. On the same day the trials were made public last week, EADS announced the world’s first TEDS data radio. Designed for vehicle, or integrated use, the EADS TEDS radio inclu-

des the first direct IP connectivity via Ethernet as well as via standard USB. Integrated GPS enables high-speed location-based services such as transmission of maps with real-time updated position information. Dirk Borkchardt, Head of Security & Communication Solutions at EADS Defence & Security said: “I’m proud of this major achievement: bringing the world's first continued on page 2
