We encourage every member to get involved whether it is by attending local meetings, taking part in Give Kids a Smile! Day activities, volunteering at a Texas Mission of Mercy, or participating in TDA Legislative Day activities in Austin. Each member matters and is essential to the continued growth of our Association and of organized dentistry. More than 100 dental volunteers provided a record-setting amount of charitable dental care at the TDA Smiles Foundation’s (TDASF) Smiles on Wheels in Goliad on Friday, May 21, and Saturday, May 22. The event was reorganized to include a half-day of hygiene preceding a traditional full day of clinical care. Dentists, hygienists, and dental students, with the help of lay people and even prison inmates, provided $116,690 in donated dental care to 176 people. TDASF dental chair Dr. Daniel Garza and his longtime staff member, TDASF community chair Ms. Gerry Reyna, both of Goliad, organized the First Baptist Church of Goliad’s gymnasium as the venue.
Dr. John Baucum of Corpus Christi, assisted by his wife Karon, provided more than $6,000 in charitable care.
On Friday, 110 Goliad County residents received free dental hygiene from dental hygienists and dental hygiene students using up to 14 hygiene units.
Drs. Don Lutes of Mount Pleasant (left) and Dan Garza of Goliad (right) pose with Michael and Viola H. from the TDASF’s Texas Donated Dental Services (TXDDS) program. Michael and Viola waited more than a year for the care. Between the two of them, they had nine problematic teeth extracted. The couple is now in the TXDDS system for completion of their cases.
On Saturday, dentists used all 14 chairs to provide clinical treatment including fillings, extractions, and root canals. All but four of the patients seen Friday returned Saturday for subsequent care. If you are interested in helping to support the TDASF or want to find out more about these events that promote the positive public image of Texas dentistry, educate the public, and help the underserved, log onto tdasf.org.
