March 2022 Hi Folks, We hope that last month was good for you musically. We have more venues opening up around town with some great live music, and this month looks like it’s going to be another great opening month for the new year.

More tours are being announced and the clubs are all gearing up to make this year one of the best they’ve ever had. We’d love to see you all out there at the clubs and venues with us. Remember, one of the best things that you could ever do for the local music scene is to get out there and support it.

We’d also like to invite you to check out our Spanish music section. Not only does it support the Spanish music community, it does so in Spanish. It would appear that Music News has now become the only bilingual music publication in Houston. Closing out the whirlwind success of this breakthrough era, she collected all these collaborative singles and bundled them with the deluxe version of her debut album as Dua Lipa: Complete Edition, which was promoted with the single “Kiss and Make Up” with K-pop girl group BlackPink.

Dua Lipa Performs At Toyota Center March 12th English pop singer Dua Lipa showcases a throwback vibe and a knack for catchy pop with soulful grit, much like Sia, Jessie J, or P!nk, and a slyly rebellious air like Charli XCX or Marina & the Diamonds. After a steady rise in the U.K., she broke onto the U.S. charts with a series of collaborations with Sean Paul, Martin Garrix, and Calvin Harris, as well as multi-platinum singles “New Rules” and “IDGAF” from her 2017 debut, Dua Lipa. Still riding the high from her breakthrough, she won 2019 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording for her collaboration with Silk City, “Electricity.” The following year, she hit new highs with her chart-topping, Grammy-winning sophomore album, the club-inspired Future Nostalgia.

Born and raised in London to Kosovar-Albanian parents, Lipa attended the Sylvia Young Theater School (Rita Ora, Amy Winehouse) until the age of 13, when she relocated to Kosovo with her family. However, the move wouldn’t last very long, and she was back in London by age 15, living on her own and pursuing a singing career. Her first demos were released in 2012, attracting the attention of Lana Del Rey’s management team, who signed her and linked her up with Emile Haynie (Lana Del 6 Music MusicNews News •• November March 20222020

Rey, Bruno Mars). Lipa’s shimmery debut single, “New Love,” was followed by the soulful “Be the One.” Long-listed for the prestigious BBC’s Sound of 2016, she released “Hotter Than Hell” and “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” in 2016, coinciding with a tour throughout the spring and summer. While “Hotter Than Hell” went on to break into the Top 20 in the U.K., in 2017 Lipa earned the distinction of having three simultaneously charting singles in the U.K. Top 15 with “Be the One,” “Scared to Be Lonely” with Martin Garrix, and “No Lie” with Sean Paul.

Dua Lipa, her debut full-length, arrived that summer. In addition to her previously released singles, the album included “Lost in Your Light” (a duet with Miguel) and “Homesick” (with Coldplay’s Chris Martin). Since a handful of singles had already been in international rotation since 2015, the album’s revived international promotional effort focused on the single “New Rules,” which became another multiplatinum hit, not only rising into the Top Ten on the Billboard Hot 100 but also landing on European and Australian Top Ten lists. Eighth album single “IDGAF” followed in 2018, extending her chart presence. That summer, she teamed with Calvin Harris for the ’90s club-inspired

In early 2019, Lipa won Best New Artist at the 61st Grammy Awards, also taking the prize for Best Dance Recording for “Electricity,” her collaborative hit single with Diplo and Mark Ronson’s Silk City project. By January 2020, she had released two songs, “Don’t Start Now” and “Physical,” as the leadoff tracks to her sophomore full-length album, Future Nostalgia. The funky set arrived a week earlier than expected that March, a gift to fans quarantined at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finding inspiration from OutKast, Prince, Gwen Stefani, and INXS, the effort focused on dancefloor-friendly fare, drawing upon ’70s disco, ’80s pop, and ’90s club music. The critically acclaimed LP was short-listed for the 2020 Mercury Prize and reached number one in the U.K., Australia, and across Europe. Later that summer, Lipa recruited electronic artist the Blessed Madonna for a remix album dubbed Club Future Nostalgia. Playing like a DJ-styled mixtape, the reimagining featured guests Madonna, Missy Elliott, Gwen Stefani, Yaeji, and Blackpink. The Future Nostalgia era was further extended into 2021 with the deluxe repackaging dubbed The Moonlight Edition, which included lead single “We’re Good” as well as collaborative tracks with Belgian singer Angele (“Fever”), Miley Cyrus (“Prisoner”), JID (“Not My Problem”), DaBaby (“Levitating” remix), and J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Tainy (“Un Dia”). Capping this triumphant period for the artist, Lipa took home her third Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Dave Mason Performs At The Heights Theater On March 29th This month the legendary Dave Mason brings his World In Changes Tour to Houston for a special performance at The Heights Theatre on March 29th.

British guitarist and singer/ songwriter Dave Mason made his initial splash as a key member, alongside Steve Winwood, of the beloved ’60s rock band Traffic, penning one of their biggest songs, “Feelin’ All Right.” After a brief stint with the band, he grew restless and left to pursue his own vision. Mason’s first full-length outing, 1970’s Alone Together, was a critical and popular success, showcasing superior songwriting, soulful singing, and great taste in guest artists. He continued releasing albums through the ’70s and ’80s, and found a hit with the 1977 single “We Just Disagree.”

Mason was born May 10, 1946, in Worcester, England. He was a professional musician by his teens and, as a member of the instrumental group the Jaguars, made his recording debut on a locally released single, “Opus to Spring,” in 1963. It was with the Jaguars that he 8 Music News • March 2022

first encountered drummer Jim Capaldi, and the two became members of the Hellions, who played around the U.K. and in Hamburg, West Germany, as well as cutting a few singles in 1964 and 1965. Mason quit the Hellions in the spring of 1965 to study music formally, while also sitting in occasionally with another band featuring Capaldi, Deep Feeling. In early 1966, he took a job as road manager for the Spencer Davis Group, where he encountered Steve Winwood; various reports suggest he also played with the band on-stage and may have sung backup vocals on the hit “Somebody Help Me.” In March 1967, Winwood left the Spencer Davis Group and formed Traffic with Mason, Capaldi, and flautist Chris Wood. The group’s first single was the Winwood/Capaldi composition “Paper Sun,” followed in August 1967 by Mason’s “Hole in My Shoe,” which hit number two in the U.K. Mason also participated in Traffic’s debut album, Mr. Fantasy, but as it was being released in December 1967 he left the band. He recorded a solo single, “Little Woman,” in early 1968, then rejoined Traffic.

“Feelin’ Alright?,” a song expressing his ambivalence about his association with the group, was released as the first single off the second album, Traffic, in October 1968; although the single did not chart, “Feelin’ Alright?” would go on to become Mason’s signature song, particularly after it was covered by Joe Cocker in 1969. Mason left Traffic again, and it broke up shortly afterward in the fall of 1968, as Winwood joined Blind Faith. Mason, Capaldi, and Wood teamed with Mick Weaver in the short-lived Wooden Frog.

Dave Mason left Traffic in 1969 to pursue a solo career in the U.S. Dave has penned over 100 songs, has 3 gold albums: Alone Together, Dave Mason, Mariposa De Oro, and platinum album Let It Flow, which contained the top-ten single “We Just Disagree”.

In addition to cranking out hits, Dave has performed on, or contributed to, a number of famous albums, including: The Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet, George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, Paul McCartney and Wings’ continued on next page

Mason moved to Los Angeles and joined Delaney & Bonnie & Friends in 1969. In 1970, he signed a solo contract with Blue Thumb Records and released his debut solo album, Alone Together, which reached number 22 and went gold in the U.S., spawning the chart single “Only You Know and I Know.” Despite this success, he continued to work in group contexts, serving temporarily as second guitarist in Eric Clapton’s band Derek and the Dominos; recording with George Harrison on All Things Must Pass; and forming a duo with Cass Elliot.

He and Elliot recorded an album, Dave Mason & Cass Elliot, released in February 1971. The LP reached number 49, but they quickly broke up. Mason rejoined Traffic for a few dates in the summer that resulted in the live album Welcome to the Canteen.

Dave, a prolific artist in his own right, has collaborated with an enviable list of the who’s who in the music industry … Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, Rita Coolidge, Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, Ron Wood, Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, and Jim Capaldi, just to name a few.

Meanwhile, Mason was preparing his follow-up to Alone Together, but a royalty dispute with Blue Thumb led to the company’s assembling the halffinished, half-live Headkeeper, which was released in February 1972 over Mason’s objections; it reached number 51. As the legal conflict continued into 1973, Blue Thumb released the chart LP Dave Mason Is Alive!, also without the artist’s approval. After a settlement, Mason signed to Columbia Records, which released It’s Like You Never Left on October 29, 1973; it climbed to number 50. Mason formed a band and

toured extensively, raising his profile sufficiently that his second Columbia LP, Dave Mason, released in October 1974, reached number 25 and went gold. Split Coconut, his third Columbia album, released on September 19, 1975, was another success, going to number 27, as he played major venues such as New York’s Madison Square Garden and the Spectrum in Philadelphia. His appeal as a concert attraction was confirmed by the appearance of the double-LP Certified Live in the fall of 1976; it hit number 78.

Mason reached a new career plateau with his next studio album, Let It Flow, released in April 1977. It reached an early peak at number 37, but stayed in the charts 49 weeks and went platinum on the success of the single “We Just Disagree” (written by Mason’s backup guitarist, Jim Krueger), which reached number 12. (The singles “So High [Rock Me Baby and Roll Me Away]” and “Let It Go, Let It Flow” also charted.)

Mariposa de Oro, Mason’s next album, was released in June 1978, preceded by a cover of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” a Top 40 single; the LP reached number 41 and went gold.

Two years passed before Mason released Old Crest on a New Wave in the summer of 1980. After it peaked at number 74 and produced the chart single “Save Me,” he parted ways with Columbia. Another major-label berth was not

forthcoming, but he continued to tour, paring down to an acoustic duo with Krueger. In 1987, he released two albums, Some Assembly Required on the Canadian label Maze Records and Two Hearts on MCA, the latter featuring “Dreams I Dream,” a duet with Phoebe Snow that reached number 11 in the adult contemporary charts. In 1993, Mason joined a new lineup of Fleetwood Mac, appearing on the 1995 album Time, but soon after, the band reverted to its previous configuration. In 1998, Mason re-teamed with Jim Capaldi for a tour that produced the 1999 album Live: The 40,000 Headmen Tour. In 2008, Megaforce Records released the first Dave Mason studio album in more than 20 years, the excellent 26 Letters 12 Notes. It was followed by Future’s Past in 2014.

For a brief period in the mid 1990s, Mason joined Fleetwood Mac and released the album Time with them in 1995. He toured with them over the course of 1994–95, including opening for REO Speedwagon and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Mason was never entirely comfortable during his time in Fleetwood Mac. He has said several times since leaving the band: “Being one of two and at times three guitarists to replace Lindsey Buckingham says more about Buckingham’s genius than my guitar playing”.

live album, and it perfectly captures their consummate playing skill with extended versions of their early classic tunes. Feat fans have been waiting for this tour for quite a while.

The tour stoppage caused by Covid could not obscure the joy and sparkle of their incredible body of work. As their newest song, “When All Boats Rise,” puts it: “When All Boats Rise we will find another pathway / When All Boats Rise we will shine like stars above / When All Boats Rise we can ride the silver skyway / That day is coming soon When All Boats Rise.”

We need that kind of optimistic faith, and Little Feat is ready to supply it. Feat, do your stuff.

Little Feat Returns With A Masterpiece Little Feat will be returning to Houston for a very special concert tour that will feature the band performing them performing their ground-breaking album Waiting for Columbus in it’s entirety. This tour is called the “Waiting For Columbus 45th Anniversary Tour 2022” and it will be taking place at the all-new 713 Music Hall on March 26th.

Making a truly great live rock and roll album is an enormous challenge, so difficult that they are a rarity. Waiting for Columbus is a consensus member of that very exclusive club.

After two years of Covid-enforced silence, Little Feat has big plans for its return to the stage. Hard on the heels of their November “By Request” tour, they are planning a March-April 2022 tour that will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the legendary Waiting for Columbus, replicating the album at every stop.

Jerry Garcia once said that making a studio album was like building a ship in a bottle; with skill and oceans of patience, you could make something beautiful. But playing live and recording it was like being on a ship in a raging storm. Feat’s trademark blend of California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, rockabilly, and New Orleans swamp boogie rested on a base of improvisational skill and jazz-based chops that made their live shows special, and on Columbus those abilities are on triumphant display.

along a recording team to four shows in London and then three in Washington, D.C., and they captured sonic gold. Backed by the Tower of Power horn section, with whom they’d recorded Feats Don’t Fail Me Now, they romped through extended versions of a stellar song selection that included “Fat Man in the Bathtub,” “Spanish Moon,” “Dixie Chicken”, “Sailin’ Shoes,” and “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now,” as well as the iconic truck driver’s lament, “Willin’,” the song that got Lowell out of the Mothers of Invention and gave birth to Little Feat. Generations of listeners have worn out the original vinyl, and the digital world will carry that heritage forward.

Hearing it again is something every Feat Fan looks forward to. It’s time to lace up your dancing shoes.

Little Feat is very possibly the lastman-standing example of what used to be the norm in American music, a fusion of a broad span of styles and genres into something utterly distinctive. They combined earthy, organic material with first-rate musicianship in a combination that transcends boundaries.

Feat took California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, rockabilly, and New Orleans swamp boogie and more, stirred it into a rich gumbo, and has been leading people in joyful dance ever since.

It all began in 1969 when Frank Zappa was smart enough to fire Lowell George from the Mothers of Invention and tell him to go start a band of his own. Soon after, Lowell connected with Bill Payne, which stirred up sparks. They then found drummer Richie Hayward, and for a while had Zappa veteran Roy Estrada on bass.

Actually, there were quite a number of bass players in the early days—that seat took a while to fill. Lowell even considered guitarist Paul Barrére for the role, although as Paul put it, “As most who know the story’s end can tell you, as a bassist I make an excellent guitarist…”

The name was part of the legend. A member of the Mothers happened to mention Lowell’s small feet to him “with an expletive,” said Paul Barrere. “Lowell deleted the expletive, and the name was born with Feat instead of Feet, just like the Beatles. Neat, huh?” continued on next page

Little Feat continued from previous page They were quickly signed by Warner Bros. and began working on the first of twelve albums with that venerable company.

The first album, Little Feat, featured the instant-classic tune “Willin’,” and the followup Sailin’ Shoes added “Easy to Slip,” “Trouble,” “Tripe Face Boogie,” “Cold Cold Cold” and the title track to their repertoire, as well as a new version of “Willin’” that took it from pure Lowell to a fully-developed band tune. Estrada departed, and the band signed up (on guitar!) Paul Barrére, Kenny Gradney (bass), and Sam Clayton (percussion), and the latter remain rock-solid members of Little Feat’s rhythm section.

1973’s Dixie Chicken gave them the title track and “Fat Man in the Bathtub,” as good a blues as any rock band has ever written. The hits kept coming: the title track from Feats Don’t Fail Me Now (1974), which also gave us “Rock and Roll Doctor,” “Spanish Moon,” and “Oh, Atlanta,” another Southern-based winner (pretty good for a bunch of guys from L.A.!). 1975 saw The Last Record Album and “All That You Dream.” In 1977, Time Loves a Hero delivered the classic title song, and their career to that point was summed up with the live Waiting for Columbus, truly one of the best live albums rock has ever heard.

Success is hard. It cost Feat their founder, Lowell George, who in 1979 took a break from working on Down on the Farm to do some solo dates and was struck down by a heart attack. And it cost the band, temporarily, their joy; shortly after, they disbanded.

In 1986, Barrere and Payne met up in a chance jam session and found that they could still find that inspiration. What they had written in ”Hangin’ On To The Good Times Here“— ”…although we went our own ways, we couldn’t escape from where we came, so we find ourselves back at the table again, telling stories of survivors and friends”—was of course true, as with any righteous song. In 1988 they returned to the road, where they’ve been ever since (excepting the pandemic), joined by Craig Fuller on vocals and Fred Tackett on guitar. Let It Roll re-introduced them to the world and was followed by Representing the Mambo and then Shake Me Up. Craig left and Shaun Murphy joined in 1993; early in 2009 she departed the band.

like San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium and Portland (Oregon)’s Roseland Ballroom. The studio albums Under The Radar and Chinese Work Songs added new favorite songs, especially “Calling The Children Home” and “Just Another Sunday,” along with creative covers of Dylan, The Band, and Phish songs.

In the early part of the new millennium, Feat started their own Hot Tomato Records and began to share their rich archives with their fans, producing the double CD collections of rarities Raw Tomatos and Ripe Tomatos from both fan and band tapes.

2002 also yielded Live From the Ram’s Head, a two-CD acoustic show, and in ’03 came Down Upon the Suwannee, a live show recorded on the banks of the river at the Magnolia Festival in northern Florida. Hot Tomato also gave the musicians the freedom to deliver solo work, as well, first with Fred Tackett’s In A Town Like This, and then Bill Payne’s Cielo Norte, an intimate, lyrical marriage of keyboards.

Their studio album from 2003 was Kickin’ It At The Barn, produced by Paul Barrere, Bill Payne, and Fred Tackett. It’s named after the place it was recorded, Tackett’s barn-cum-studio in Topanga Canyon, which lent an invaluable ambience to the undertaking. In his liner notes, faithful Feat member Paul Barrere wrote, ”If music is a conversation between the players, then we are talking like never before…this has been truly one of the most memorable recording projects we’ve done. We started with an idea to write songs on acoustic guitar and piano, like the old days before computers and samples, and then let the band interpret the music.“ Little Feat’s rich legacy was acknowledged at the 25th anniversary of the monumental live album Waiting for Columbus

when Rhino Records put out a special two CD edition of the original concert, plus outtakes, along with Hotcakes and Outtakes: 30 Years of Little Feat, a four-CD, 83 track boxed set featuring hits from all of Feat’s albums as well as alternate takes and rarities from a rich past, which has included playing with everybody from Bob Dylan to Beck, Willie Nelson to Bonnie Raitt, Robert Plant, John Lee Hooker, and…you name it.

Join the Band, in many ways a summing up of all that’s preceded it, came in 2009, with re-recordings of their classic songs bringing together a vast slew of musical friends on vocals backed by Feat— Dave Matthews on “Fat Man,” Jimmy Buffett on “Champion of the World,” Emmylou Harris on “Sailin’ Shoes.” Bill Payne said it was about locating their influences. In some ways, it documents the way they’ve influenced the musicians who listen to them. And it certainly documents a musical career.

Their latest studio work is Rooster Rag, by critical consensus their best studio album in twenty years, featuring four songs co-written by Payne and the Grateful Dead’s legendary lyricist Robert Hunter, four breakout songs by Fred Tackett, and a superb collaboration between Paul Barrere and the late Stephen Bruton.

You can go a number of ways when you spend your life on the road. You can get eaten up by the stresses and quit, or you can hold on to your music and your friends and the joy of the people out front and keep the priorities straight the way the Featsters have.

Fifty years on, they’ve been up and they’ve been down and they know where they belong—standing or sitting behind their instruments, playing for you. And anything’s possible, because the end is not in sight.

Stone’s Elysa Gardner as “some country, and there’s some folk, and there’s some fairly aggressive rhythm section on a number of tunes that you wouldn’t associate with country or folk. He called one song, “Here on Earth (I’ll Have My Cake),” a “bagpipe-meets-fusion thing.”

That said, it should be noted that both Brad and Dan Roberts claim the heavy metal band Kiss as their greatest musical influence. Comparisons to David Byrne and the Talking Heads are more likely “inevitable,” theorized Carter Alan in the Boston Globe. “The wit and intent [are] quite similar even if the Dummies are not as rhythmically relentless.” It might also be noted that the Crash Test Dummies have covered country singer Johnny Cash and the alternative rock band Replacements, and that Brad Roberts dreams of touring with Andy Partridge of the alternative band XTC.

by Joanna Rubiner Crash Test Dummies is an appropriate name for a band that got serious by accident and gained popularity faster than a speeding car. “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm,” the band’s first single off of their second album, swept across the United States driven by its quirky title and the unlikely bass baritone of its lead singer. If a bullfrog could sing appealingly, it would probably sound like Brad Roberts, the voice— and vaguely wacky songwriter—behind this “neo-folkie, pseudo-hippies, sort of Celtic, dryly humorous, exceptionally literate pop band.” At least that’s how People magazine contributor Craig Tomashoff described this quintet of Canadian natives.

Their beginnings are humorous too—and far from calculated. In the mid-1980s a loose group of friends from the University of Winnipeg in Manitoba started playing music together. Eventually they became the house band at a 50-seat after-hours club called the Blue Note. They played what Roberts described in Rolling Stone as “ridiculous cover tunes, everything from cheesy Irish traditionals to TV theme songs to acoustic versions of Alice Cooper hits.” The name the band picked was a joke: after considering Chemotherapists and Skin Graft, they agreed on Crash Test Dummies because they had written it down so many times.

After graduating with an honors degree in English literature from the University of Winnipeg, Roberts realized that the band had turned into something more than a way to pass the weekends. By then they had settled on their core members: Roberts singing lead and playing guitar; his younger brother Dan on bass; Benjamin Darvill on mandolin and harmonicas; Ellen Reid on a crop of instruments including piano, keyboards, and accordion, as well as singing backup; and Mitch Dorge on drums. They put together a five-song demo and shipped it around to Canadian music festivals, hoping to get some gigs outside of Winnipeg. The tape found its way into the hands of record company executives, who started calling with offers. Roberts nixed his plans for completion of a master’s degree and jumped into the music industry.

In 1989, when the band signed with BMG Canada and Arista in the United States, Roberts got to work trying to write enough songs for a first album. “I had only written five songs in my entire life by that time,” he admitted to Fred Shuster in the Los Angeles Daily News, “I had to scramble to finish.... I had no intention of doing this professionally.” As he told Larry LeBlanc in Billboard, “I often take three to four weeks to write a song, but when a song is finished, 99% of the time it’s a keeper.” They had only 13 songs to choose from for their first album; they picked 12 of them.

Released in the spring of 1991, The Ghosts That Haunt Me proved to be interesting, alternative music fare. A People reviewer likened it to “an improbable kiddie cereal made with bran,” adding, “this Canadian group gives you sprightly Irish jigs and earthy-crunchy folk music, all rolled into one addictively sweet confection.” Roberts described the sound to Rolling

Within nine months of its release, and with the help of their Number One hit in Canada, “Superman’s Song”—”a small masterpiece,” according to Newsweek’s David Gates—Ghosts reached sales of more than 300,000 copies in Canada, garnering three platinum albums. When the record first came out, the Dummies had been booked to play small clubs across Canada; after that first single, they had the power to sell out entire theaters.

After two years of touring—opening for rocker Sting on a few gigs— and spending quality time on their next recording, the band released their second album, God Shuffled His Feet. With more time and money on their side this time around, Roberts had the opportunity to demo all the material for the album on a 24-track studio in his home. That way the band had a better sense of Roberts’s vision for a song before contributing their individual sounds to it. Ex-Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison coproduced the album. When asked about that choice, Roberts told Billboard, “We thought anybody who was in the Talking Heads must be at least halfway cool. He’s also a keyboard player, and we wanted to stretch out into synthesized and sampling technology.”

An even bigger stretch for the band, noted LeBlanc in Billboard, came with the jettisoning of “the sparse rock, country, and Celtic folk stance in favor of a new densely textured alternative-rock approach.” “The shift in [that] direction has to do with me sitting down and wanting to write a body of work that was challenging, interesting, and new,” Roberts explained in the same article. “The band welcomed that agenda. To me, it wouldn’t be interesting to duplicate the sounds and genres we played around with on the first record.”

Arista was counting on this new approach to push the Dummies over the edge in the States. Although their first album had done respectably on the American college scene, it didn’t come close to their Canadian acclaim. Since that time, however, two radio formats—commercial alternative and adult album alternative—had increased the band’s profile, and that’s what Arista was banking on. The company saturated U.S.-Canadian border stations with the first single, “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm,” and in no time major stations, including the influential KROQ in Burbank, California, fell for the Dummies. Radio personnel weren’t sure at first what their listeners would think of this odd song, but they didn’t have to wait long for the calls to pour in. Outspoken radio personality Howard Stern was also fond of the single and plugged it incessantly on his syndicated radio show.

“Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm,” which takes its title from the humalong chorus, tells the stories of three kids with somewhat unusual problems. Roberts’s unearthly, deeply reverberating voice, along with lyrics “enveloped in shimmering atmospheric keyboards and a warm, finely wrought melody”—according to Shuster in the Los Angeles Daily News— add a serious and powerful feel to issues that would be a big deal from a kid’s perspective.

The single reached Number Two on the American pop charts in the spring of 1994. The numbers of new fans buying the disc on the basis of that first song were rewarded with a weird and lovely album. People’s Tomashoff found the dozen tunes sounded “like nothing you’ve ever heard before yet are completely hummable from the very first listening. The melodies are amiably pop, too laid-back to be rock and too upbeat to be ballads.

And ... Roberts’ throaty vocal style—sort of like a [manly-voiced television actress] Bea Arthur recording played back at slow speed—adds a quirky twist.”

Critics and fans were charmed by this strange quintet. It’s a rare Top 40-friendly tune that wonders, “If your eye got poked out in this life / Would it be waiting up in heaven with your wife?” (from “God Shuffled His Feet”).

Assuming their sound keeps radio on its toes, as it has, and assuming Brad Roberts doesn’t write a “normal” song too soon, or let loose that golden frog from his throat, these Manitobans look like they’ll keep on singing their happy accidents.

That hope also takes shape through love songs, like the emotive single “Down,” which pledges a determined loyalty that would follow the one she loves down into the darkest abyss of experience. “To me, that is an element of hope,” Jamie says. “We’re not alone. There are people that will love you no matter what.”

Jamie Vessels creates original New Orleans Roots Rock for the wanderers, the dreamers, the fighters – those who live on the same off-the-beaten path that Jamie has been following all her life.

The singer, songwriter, and guitarist has developed a name for herself in the roots music culture in New Orleans, where her voice and her unabashed honesty consistently create a community out of a room full of strangers. Her new album If I’m Being Honest promises to cast that same spell, armed with bluesy, hard-hitting guitar riffs and lyrics that don’t shy away from the hard and hopeful experiences that make us human.

“Damn Dirty Demons” leads the collection with an unflinching look into the heart of addiction, swamp rock riffs sliding over a cigar box guitar as Jamie sings about the demons that can run our lives without us even realizing it. In the haunting “Eulogy at Joshua Tree,” the songwriter steps into the legacy of legends past as she recounts the illconceived Joshua Tree cremation of country music icon Gram Parsons. “Pulse” is a heavyhearted offering about the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando that left 49 individuals (mostly from the LGBTQ community) dead.

A song five years in the making, Jamie takes the opportunity to grieve the hatred and violence that the event represents.

From start to finish, this pull-no-punches album embodies that sense of solidarity. The theme of community is one that weaves its way all the way through the writing and recording process, especially as the album was taking shape during quarantine. “My gigs basically went from 60 to 0 in no time flat,” Jamie recalls. “I immediately got on the livestream thing. I needed to be able to connect with people.”

She also recounts taking that time to delve more deeply into her personal life and mental health. That process including working through trauma, recovery, food issues and disordered eating, neurodivergence, depression and anxiety, and, in general, “taking a good hard look back at who I am and why I am that way, and what I want to bring to the table for other people as a way to fully see themselves — how to heal, love, and experience hope and joy again.”

During lockdown, the process of learning how to host effective livestreams, how to interact with fans in the comments, and how to stay connected despite not being physically on stage ended up further developing Jamie’s own understanding of how crucial community is to her. The melting pot that is the New Orleans music scene had primed her to thrive in spaces that center on shared human experience. Even the album’s forthright political offerings are born from a protectiveness, standing against anything that would erode our sense of common humanity.

Summing up her approach to songwriting and performing, Jamie says simply, “I everyone to feel seen and included.”

Jamie Vessels hasn’t always been the larger-than-life roots rock singer standing center stage. She grew up with a deep love for folk rock and singer-songwriters, absorbing the style of artists like Sheryl Crow, Beth Hart, and Brandi Carlile. Even then, her love for ‘the wanderers’ was taking shape: “my favorite songs tended to be the ones that dealt with heavier emotional subjects.”

Childhood piano lessons eventually led to picking up the guitar at age 10, prompting Jamie to enlist neighborhood kids in her very first band. She describes her first guitar teacher as “a rock and roll guy with long red hair,” a resource that developed her musical edge. Believing that music wasn’t a sustainable career path, Jamie set aside music to attend college and then graduate school to earn a Master’s in Criminal Justice. During grad school in Massachusetts, she began to feel music’s magnetic pull once again.

Shortly after graduation, she moved to New Orleans and never looked back. “Being around jazz and blues and eclectic types of musicians has really shaped my sound. I found myself,” Jamie shares.

In addition to finding herself, Jamie found a whole musical community to work alongside. Today that continues to shape the music she creates. She works with three players who collaborate with and strengthen her own artistic vision. Describing the process, she explains, “Usually, I’ll write the songs, and I’ll bring them to rehearsal and say ‘here’s how I want it to go. You guys put your flavor on it.’ Other times, when we’re just feeling creative or being spontaneous, it’s a collaboration that starts with a riff or a lyric.

Then we all work together to bring the song to life.”

It’s a chemical reaction that results in the raucous explosion of rock and roll energy and lyrical complexity, leaving an unmistakable impression on listeners. If I’m Being Honest captures that power like never before, using it as the catalyst to create community for the wanderers, the dreamers, and the fighters.

Rehab Perform At The Scout Bar April 2nd Rehab is an American rock/rap group was formed during the late 1990s in Warner Robins, Georgia. Rehab has released two major albums and four other discs are in existence. In addition, they have charted two singles on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts, one of which — “Bartender Song” — has also become a minor Hot 100 and country hit. This song is also their higher entry on the Rock charts.

Rehab was originally formed as a trio: Steaknife, Danny Alexander, and Brooks Buford. Early on, they released their first album “To Whom It May Consume” produced by Steaknife and Brooks Buford. Soon after, Epic/Sony offered a record deal.

Rehab’s major label debut, Southern Discomfort, hit stores in October 2000.

With band members Danny Alexander and Brooks, hailing from the city of Warner Robins, south of Macon, Georgia (they dedicated a song to their hometown called “This Town”). Their debut album starts with a skit of them breaking out of a rehabilitation facility. The album went on to sell over 140,000 units, and produced such hits as “Sittin’ At A Bar”, “It Don’t

Matter” (Modern Rock Top 20), “Rattle My Cage”, and featured such guests as Cee-Lo, Goodie Mob, Steaknife, and Cody Chestnutt.

After 2 years on the road supporting the Vans Warped Tour and playing with bands such as Linkin Park, Danny called it quits over a difference in creative view points.

On July 12, 2005, Rehab re-emerged with a new album “Graffiti the World”. The new Rehab was brought together by original band member Danny “Boone” Alexander. Joining him were longtime musicians Mike Hartnett on lead guitar, Hano Leathers on bass, Chris Hood on drums, Foz on rhythm guitar, and DJ Chris Crisis. An additional and unofficial member of the group, though, by the name of Demun Jones often steps in to perform the raps that Brooks once sang. The seven put together new tracks and re-worked old classics with help from local Atlanta producer Billy Hume.

Graffiti the World features the hits “What Do you Want From Me”, “Graffiti The World”,”Last Tattoo” and “This Town” Danny Boone(a virtual musical tour of the groups hometown beginning in the 80’s).

In 2008 Rehab decided to undergo a mini-tour focused in the southeast making stops in Georgia, Alabama, Carolina, Tennessee and Florida.

Brooks Buford, after the group’s initial separation, went on to record several projects, Straight Outta Rehab, which was never released due to Artista going out of business. He is currently working on a follow-up album titled “Suspicious Package” as well as a side project with Ashley Alan-Lee and Tommy Henriksen called The Audio Club. In late 2005, Brooks went on to host the MTV series Trailer Fabulous and in 2006 the MTV International series “Bustamove”.

Steaknife (Denny Campbell) was scheduled to release a CD under Priority Records but was later dropped from the label. Denny has stated that he wasn’t very fond of these tracks. He has released an album with friend Lindsay Few titled “Trouble The Water” which is highly religion based. Denny is currently in the studio recording his first full length studio album tentatively titled “White Noize”.

by Steaknife (Denny Campbell and Soulful-I (Jared Adair)) has been released on their myspace page under the user name of “snowblindwhitenoize”. Steaknife is currently working with Danny “Boone” Alexander and Brooks Buford, the original members of Rehab on a new album scheduled to come out sometime in April, as is Soulfuli on his own solo album called “Head high” Universal Republic Records signed the Warner Robins mash-up group in May 2008 and will be releasing the band’s 2005 independent release, Graffiti The World, later in the spring with 3 additional neverbefore-heard tracks.

A short west coast September tour with Pop Rock and Country crossover artist Kid Rock, and a new video release of their newly titled “Bartender song” formerly known as “Sittin at a bar” which was recorded with Country Superstar Hank Williams Jr. In 2012, Rehab struck a deal with Average Joe’s Entertainment, which soon released their fourth album, Gullible’s Travels. The group toured in support, but after the release of the single “Whore” in 2013, things went quiet in the Rehab camp, and in 2014 the band announced that it was breaking up, staging a final tour for its fans. The members of the group announced they would focus on their solo careers, but in 2015 Steaknife dropped hints on social media that he and Danny Boone were planning to record new Rehab material.

While new music didn’t immediately surface, in 2017 Rehab brought out Million Dollar Mugshot, a collection of previously unreleased studio material from the original group, featuring guest appearances from Bubba Sparxxx, Ritzz, and Uncle Mike.

Cannibal Corpse is touring in support of their latest album, Violence Unimagined. Violence Unimagined. The title tells you everything you need to know about Cannibal Corpse’s fifteenth hellish opus. Comprised of eleven tracks, it is state of the art death metal played with passion and breathless precision, making for another flawless addition to what is inarguably one of the premier catalogues the genre has thrown up. “It really follows the path we’ve been going down for a few years now,” states bassist and founding member Alex Webster. “I think we approach the writing in a similar way most every time: each of us try to write the heaviest, most memorable songs we can. We want each song to have its own identifiable character.

Showing my age, I like to say you can ‘drop the needle’ on any point of one of our albums and quickly tell which song you’re listening to.”

Ever improving on the genre they helped define, 2017’s Red Before Black stands as one of the highlights of their career. Following it up wasn’t exactly easy, but Cannibal Corpse have somehow managed to raise the bar yet again. The opening “Murderous Rampage” lives up to its title while the uglier than hell “Condemnation Contagion” practically falls over itself in its hurry to draw blood, and 26 Music News • March 2022

alternately, the lurching, catchy and gloriously chaotic “Ritual Annihilation” is pulverizing. While they continue to do what they do with aplomb, the one substantial change to Cannibal Corpse in 2020 is the addition of guitarist Erik Rutan to their ranks, joining Webster, founding drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz, guitarist Rob Barrett and vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher. Known for his roles in Morbid Angel, Ripping Corpse and most notably fronting the mighty Hate Eternal, Rutan has long established himself as one of the most dynamic forces in contemporary death metal. Simultaneously, he has built up a reputation as one of the most in demand producers in metal, having previously produced four Cannibal Corpse albums, alongside the likes of Goatwhore, Soilent Green and Belphegor. Filling in live on guitar since 2019, in 2020 he became a full member, contributing to the writing process. “I think the most noticeable difference on this record will be the addition of Erik to the band. He wrote three full songs for the record, music and lyrics, and his song writing and guitar playing have added something new, and I think his musical style integrated into ours very well,” Webster enthuses. This is not all that he brings to the band. “He’s a great friend of ours, so on a personal level, he’s been a perfect fit, as we knew he would be. Beyond that, he’s one of the hardest working people I know, in music or otherwise, and he maintains a high energy, positive demeanor in challenging situations where other people might go in a negative direction. This energy and great attitude rubs off on the rest of us as well. That’s really a perfect situation to have when you add someone to a band, or any kind of team: someone who’s great at what they do, and also inspires the people around them.” Already well known for the level of extreme technicality they bring to every record, on Violence Unimagined, Cannibal Corpse have further upped their game, particularly in Mazurkiewicz’s drumming. “I think we all pushed ourselves a bit technically on this one, with Paul probably pushing the hardest. This album is probably the most drum-intense album we’ve done yet. Part of that could be a result of Erik joining the band. His song writing style often features technically challenging drumming, probably owing to his years of experience in high speed death metal.”

And with typically dark and warped lyrical content, Mazurkiewicz came up with the fitting title of the record, “summing up what the band is about in every facet, and taking violence to another level of extremity.”

With Rutan in the band, having him produce the record was a no-brainer at Mana Recording in St. Petersburg, FL - his central base of operation. Using the studio for pre-production, rather than their rehearsal space as usual, was a great benefit early on, allowing them to come into the actual recording process better prepared than ever before. However, their plans to record the album entirely together were interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, with Webster forced to record his bass tracks in his home studio. “I live on the other side of the country now, and that hadn’t been an issue prior to the pandemic, I was still able to go to Florida whenever I needed to. So, I was scheduled to fly down for the recording in early April 2020, and of course that was at the very beginning of all of the lockdowns and travel restrictions in the USA, so I didn’t go. Fortunately I have a lot of experience recording bass tracks at home, so it didn’t affect the sound of the album at all. I stayed in close contact with Erik and the other guys throughout the process, and it actually wound up being quite smooth. Of course I’m looking forward to tracking in the big studio with the guys for the next album, but I’m glad this option worked well for us.” And it would not be a Cannibal Corpse album without striking artwork from Vince Locke, and Violence Unimagined is no different - this time, the cover featuring a mother eating her own baby, though Webster concedes that for censorship reasons, they have had Locke do a complimentary piece that will be more widely released.

Now in their thirty-second year of existence, Webster still has the same hunger to tour, and though unable to do so while the Covid19 crisis continues, the bassist hopes that not too much more time passes before they are able to get back on the road. Regardless, he is looking ahead and not to the band’s past. “We’re very excited to continue this new chapter of the band with Erik on board. I think that a band should always be working to improve and trying to make whatever they’re currently doing the best thing they’ve done, so that’s what we’ll do.”

In Memorium Dennis Walker

Houston has lost yet one more very talented musician on January 21, 2022.

Dennis Walker was born in Hope, Arkansas on August 10, 1952. He was the son of Donna Burger and Lynn Vines, the second of four brothers. From a very young age, Dennis was an exceptional artist and musician. He loved the performing arts, from theater, to film, to television and more. He could never find enough inspiration for his multi-facet talents and accumulated wealth of knowledge due to his deep love of these multiple media.

Dennis was a graphic artist and was instrumental in Houston’s first underground comics, such as Guano Comix. In addition, Dennis and his brother Robert were major contributors to Turkey Comics. Dennis’ artistic abilities helped him in production and paste-up in the 70s along with cartoon illustration and design for individual logos.

He also delighted in design and created countless shirts, posters, and even beautiful black light posters, including for radio station KPFT in Houston.

One of Dennis’ favorite stories was to recount appearing in West Side Story with Patrick Swayze while attending to Waltrip High School in Houston, Texas.

Of all his incredible talents, music was the one that will be most remembered. Dennis was a prolific songwriter, and like many songwriters, he started out writing poetry in school. Once he was given a guitar, he soon learned he could apply this to songwriting as well and his musical world began to blossom.

While still in his 20s, Dennis became a prolific songwriter, saying that he heard entire orchestras in his head. While he loved all music, psychedelic and rock and roll were the most dear to his heart. In particular, he fostered a lifelong love of The Beatles and the works of John Lennon in particular. He created and performed with many bands over his life, all the way until his death. He took great pride in the fact that his wife performed with him on flute and other wind instruments, along with improvised key-boards. He often joked that she shared the same birthday with John Lennon, October 9th. He started the band Fyrst Tryp after discovering that his lifelong friend and cosmic brother, Chris Alexander was a talented improviser on keyboards. In addition to Fyrst Tryp, Dennis formed Tune Poets and Atomic Space Patrol. Fyrst Tryp was a completely improvised, original, psychedelic band influenced by another great talent he admired, Frank Zappa. Tune Poets was an acoustic band that often played many

of his original songs and Atomic Space Patrol was his electric rock and roll band. Atomic Space Patrol, as with Tune Poets, played many of his original songs. Dennis loved little more than to perform live music, and did so at every opportunity. He was a joy to work with and a thrill to watch. Dennis made sure to play many KPFT benefits and was devoted to helpin keep the station going.

Needless to say, Dennis will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of playing music with him, or producing artwork with him.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 42

years, Sherri-Kay Walker, his children, Forrest Glen Walker, Nile Fields Walker, Kyran Palace Walker, and brothers, David Walker, Robert Walker, and Walton Walker.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Donna Walker, Grandmother Grace Trahan, Best Friend, Steven Fritz, and Favorite Bass Player, Steve Swayne.

Dennis would want to tell everyone left behind that he will see you again, and to remember to keep the music and art alive. He cherished his friends and deeply loved his family.

Ilya can still hardly believe that his teenage hobby survived through the years and became so influential. He was asked to support projects of Mark Almond (Soft Cell) and Brett Anderson (Suede), contributing lyrics and performing.

Mumiy Troll is not a one-man band however — the 4 people on stage have been together for the last 10 years. Yuri Tsaler, one of the most admirable guitarists in the country, is also the co-author of some of the bands songs. Oleg Pungin began his drumming career at the age of 7 and is still delivering the strongest pumping beats as he helps to record a good half of all records in Russia. Sdwig is the bass player who is in charge of introducing the band to modern-day technologies.

SOCIETY: Mumiy Troll was the first to support the activities of PSI organization fighting AIDS in Russia. They are also well known for conservation activities on wild life in Far-East taiga and helping local minorities to survive. Ilya Lagutenko is a patron of the British-Russian Amur fund for the protection of Siberian tigers and leopards.

The Fifth Element Deaton Lemay Project Dynamic progressive rockers Deaton Lemay Project are back with another collection of bombastic songs that are sure to startle and amaze fans and newcomers alike. “The Fifth Element” is the follow-up to 2019’s “Day After Yesterday”, itself a stunning offering that would be quite the hard act to follow for the average band. But thankfully there’s nothing average about Deaton Lemay Project, and this eleven song collection will serve to cement their position among the elite of progressive rock. “The Fifth Element” flows with the ease, grace and precision of an opera, complete with drama and mood shifts. This would seem to be essentially a concept album, and the story is told as much through dramatic musical performances as it is lyrically. Multiinstrumentalist Roby Deaton (keyboards, acoustic guitar, vocals) and drummer extraordinaire Craig Lemay are joined by a cast of guest artists whose contributions are so significant, it would be a disservice not to note them all. Featured here are guitarists Ehsan Imani and Josh Mark Raj, bassists John Haddad and Charles Berthoud, violinist Liza Evans, and the sensational Hali Kiani on vocals. The Biker And The Timeless Endurance Of The Blues There a number of sub-genres within blues music. Traditional, blues rock, slow blues, and more but no matter how you slice it overall the blues continues to deliver from one generation to the next. It really doesn’t matter what era the original songwriter of a popular blues song came out of as the blues and its many themes are timeless. The blues genre endures because it is highly relatable messaging set to music.

Combination blues songwriters/artists themselves reside in this rather distinctive tier of their own, for the most part many of these men and women have lived what they write. They write and sing about situations that happen to many of us therefore the result, their delivery, rings true.

Looking deeper, into the various sub-genres of the blues, we note the separate performance styles of the greats such as Buddy Guy’s presence being different from Eric Clapton’s for example. Both styles equally hitting the mark but then again they are different. Another example of being alike but different is the remarkable Barbara Blue’s presence being different from that of the great Ruth Brown’s. Both women perform originals in their own separate style but once again they both hit the mark smack dab on dead center. There are times when a good sultry blues style (Annika Chambers) moves you one way while another time a driving blues rock song (ZZ Top) invites you in another way. For me personally being up on two wheels and embracing this odyssey of mine allows me to open doors into multiple blues venues where I meet many blues songwriters and performers. I remember one time when I met a country artist in a blues bar. He volunteered that he started out playing the blues but he gave way to moving to Nashville to record country because a man in his words has

to make a living. He shared this because his creative heart still lives inside the world of the blues. Country is paying him well but if you examine the creative influences of the blues songwriter you learn that money is nice but those that write, record, and present their music live in a realm unto itself. They present the blues from the heart and they will not have it any other way. Recently twenty six year old Clay Melton released his five song EP titled “Back To Blue”.

It rose up the blues rock chart fast hitting number one in no time flat. Radio show hosts listened to his submission and immediately shared it with their audiences. Melton’s “Back To Blue” track on the EP by the same name combines southern residence and southern culture and injects it into a universally relatable theme, being jilted. In his song he advises, “pour yourself some cheap red wine, put on some delta blues, unwind your mind because baby you’re back to blue”. Ever happen to you, been jilted? If you haven’t heard the song take it in, it’s cool. Blues songwriters/artists craft and present relatable situations, albeit some of them being a bit cloaked at times, but always guttural in nature coming at you straight from the heart. The blues endures because it houses the very stuff that we all go through whether we are young or not so young. Hidden but within the creation of many of these songs lies a songwriter’s real world experiences, one that we too may have experienced but we keep to ourselves. Real world names and places of which cannot be or at the very least should not be shared are not but yet the song’s theme carries through to us just the same. Basically, in his song if you have ever suspected something obvious but not quite sure then you can relate to the humorous musings. In another type of blues theme, another real world experience for you personally perhaps, it could be that you shall we say found yourself with the wrong person at the wrong time?

Things may have gotten extremely heated in that situation if you know what I mean. No matter how you slice it’s the blues baby and it comes at you within many real world themes. Blues performers interpret the songwriter’s theme as they envision it and then add their special creative delivery. A story unfolds and the listener’s somewhat unique and private experiences unify uniting us as a group even though we are not going to talk about it to the person sitting next to us. Then again even if you don’t speak about it sometimes if you just look at them closely you can see their own private, shy smile that communicates without words - been there, done that. Blues rock songs such as Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “That Smell” present a warning about life’s bad choices, a modern day tragedy, as you and I listen and remember someone that is no longer with us. Now another type of highly relatable blues themes comes to us from Maria Daines who presents a number titled “Low Down Dirty Love”. A theme that is extremely relatable for many a wayward man and woman. The song speaks of knowing that this low down dirty love situation is definitely wrong but you’re doing it anyway. Ever done that? Of course not.

Overall no matter how you slice the blues with its many themes it reaches all of us through one theme or another. It’s also interesting to note that there is a rather somewhat quiet understanding that resides within today’s blues professionals. It’s the recognition of those that keep the blues alive, those that work to inspire fellow artists of all ages. and others toward keeping the art form moving forward, a very commendable celebration to be sure. On the other side of the coin, those new to the art form, those that are arriving on the scene and there are literally hundreds of new aspiring blues artists coming up that, simply stated, kick ass. These new entries are expanding the blues into new ears, to youthful ears and they too are to be commended. Coming at us from yet another direction the sexy songstress Evelyn Rubio presents her songs internationally in two languages communicating such worldwide themes as found in “I’m Gonna Love You Tonight”. She presents the song beyond the English language thereby helping to expand the blues internationally. In this particular song the singer/songwriter presents a sexy, sultry form of the blues. One that paints the longing that can exist within someone deeply in love while waiting for the other to arrive. The level of anticipation one can feel delivers yet another different type of blues situation. Then we look at the venues that support these performers week in and week out. One such place in Houston Texas is The Big Easy. It’s unique. A multi-cultural night club that proves that races and genders can enjoy the same kind of music within the same set of walls because the blues is indeed the common denominator. In fact The Big Easy is so popular that the number of bands wanting to be on stage there is extremely impressive. Incredibly, usually for a five or ten dollar bill you can see top names. This price point and place of friendship is a prime example of the type of blues culture existing and flourishing all over the United States and beyond. The entertainment is the attraction, the relaxed atmosphere that 44

A mature, disciplined cool crowd that just wants to hear the best and take it all in. People that are new to experiencing blues venues can be a bit hesitant at first but once inside they fit right in. You take an artist like Albert Cummings who gets a venue up and rolling strong with his songs like “The Blues Makes Me Feel So Good” The tune kicks ass and receives momentous applause. His “Barrelhouse Blues” which is a somewhat compelling number, holds the level of anticipation in place while Cummings expressive vocals communicate a man not doing well with his woman. He sings you can talk to your whiskey people and closes saying however at closing time you won’t be through. Have you been there, done that? This is the world of the blues, pure raw emotion being expressed front and center stage.

Among the real deal bluesmen of all time is Sam “Lightnin” Hopkins. One of the many noted pioneers of American blues whose albums continue to be relished the world over. Mr. Hopkins made the scene delivering front running originals all the while he writing and performing new material, he never looked back. The man was all blues, he lived it, he wrote it, recorded it, and performed it. To this day he remains a special treasure and well into the future his contributions will be remembered for decades to come. His cousin, Milton Hopkins, is still with us. Milton spent eight years on the bus with the late B.B. King playing rhythm guitar in B.B.s band. Two lifelong bluesmen and there are lifelong blues women as well. In fact, in the late twenties and thirties it was the female blues singers that attracted the audiences into the clubs. To this very day stage presentations by such female traditional blues artists as Trudy Lynn and Diunna Greenleaf are highly sought after with both performing for weeks at a time in Europe.

Their albums continually present the best in blues and are well worth the money. Trudy got her start at Peacock Records when she was just a young girl and would go on to be booked offshore by Chess Records A&R agent the famous Max Cooperstein. Today, after some fifty plus years of performing she remains a fan favorite both domestically and abroad. Another great blues fan favorite is Diunna Greenleaf. As a young girl Diunna would always be singing but especially she loved to sing in church. Everyone kept remarking that this is a major vocalist in the making. How true that would turn out to be. Diunna came up fast and the blues became a natural home for this marvelous blues lady. She formed her own band named Blue Mercy and the world fell in love with this woman’s presence. Both women, Trudy and Diunna, still sing in church to this day and both are still recording and touring. That’s the blues ladies and gentlemen.

Paquita La Del Barrio Performs At The Arena Theatre On March 25 Queen and defender of women.

Francisca Viveros Barradas, better known as Paquita La Del Barrio, was born on April 2, 1947 in Alto Lucero, Veracruz.

She is the daughter of Aurora Barradas and Tomás Viveros. The one in charge of raising Paquita was her aunt Lucía de ella.

Her childhood was not easy, since “Girl”, as she was called, from a very young age she went barefoot. He learned to pick coffee, take charge of loaded animals, he went to the orchards to cut mangoes, he sold bread along dirt roads from one town to another, performing those tasks that poverty forces you to learn and practice in a small remote town 5 hours of a city.

Around her 12 years of age, while she was riding a horse she was already singing along the roads. That was how she, Paquita, discovered her talent that years later would give her great fame, increasing what she was beginning to earn at that time. At her school festivals, her teachers always asked her to sing. That was how Paquita sang for the first time in public.

Time passed. Paquita only managed to finish primary school. It was because of her shortcomings that she was forced to drop out of school. As a curious fact, the Three Wise Men (equivalent to Santa Claus in the United States) never left him a gift.

Another curious fact is that when a movie came to be shown in the town church, one of those that starred Pedro Infante at that time, she used to wonder if one day she would be there, on that giant screen.

Around the age of 15, she is given the

opportunity to work in the Civil Registry of her town. That’s when she meets the Treasurer of the Municipal Presidency, her first great love, a man named Miguel Gerardo, 30 years older than her and, moreover, a married man.

With him Paquita procreated her 2 children: the eldest, Miguel, and Javier, whose age differs by just one year. It could be said that Paquita was the “second front” of this man, who took her to live in another small town called Chicontepec, where Paquita, tired of living this hell, gathers her courage and decides to leave her children in charge of her mom Aurora. In 1970 she travels to Mexico City in search of work.

She is accompanied by her sister Viola de Ella, with whom she had sung at a village festival. This is how they decide to create the duet called Las Golondrinas. When settling in the big capital, they ran into many obstacles, arriving as “arrimadas” to a low-income house in Tepito, one of the lowest and most dangerous neighborhoods in the city, thanks to some people they knew who asked them every month to go because according to them they could only stay while they found work. Well, “no way”: again they had to look for a place to live. Once established, they found work in a small place called La Fogata Norteña, where Paquita met her second partner, Alfonso Martínez, who over the years would become the famous “useless”, which is the trademark in which the musical proposal of the artist has been cemented.

This man was the manager of a hotel restaurant and when he fell in love with Paquita he proposed to marry her and send for her children, still managers in the small town where they had stayed with their grandmother, and thus lead a family life. .

Everything seemed favorable to happiness.

The year was 1975. They were offered a contract to tour Peru and Chile, but the problem was that they only wanted one, Viola. Paquita comments that she would not have left her sister for nothing if it had been the case that she had been chosen.

Accustomed to singing with Viola, she decides to retire and opens a small restaurant where she sells Mexican snacks.

Then she, along with her husband, decides to throw banquets and party foods. She cooked and did the shopping. Little by little they were gaining customers. In 1977 she gives birth to twins who die inexplicably two weeks after birth and three months later her mother dies, suffering from fatal diabetes.

That was a very difficult year, full of very sad moments. Either way, he had to move on. He continues in the banquets for parties and in 1978, after raising some money, he buys a piece of land in the Guerrero neighborhood, where, due to the lack of resources to undertake a formal construction, he builds between canvases what was the restaurant called Casa Paquita. continued on next page

By 1979, still in pain from the loss of her twins, she found out that in her town a newborn girl, the daughter of a half brother, was struggling between life and death due to a mysterious virus. Paquita immediately went for her and took her to Mexico City to hospitalize her and try to save her. From that time a great love was born between them, the love of a mother who fights and gives her life for the most sincere thing that exists, and the selfless affection and innocence of a girl who, being safe, becomes her own daughter after that his brother agreed to give it to him.

Her daughter is named after Martha Elena.

In 1984 she recorded her first album. She herself paid for it with her savings, since she doesn’t always have the luck of being accepted by a label when your image is not that of an exuberant woman with great charms, even if she has talent. This was the case of Paquita, who knocked on many doors without getting them to open on her first try. The person who baptized her as Paquita La Del Barrio was Mr. Emilio Jiménez, her director on that first album, which was called “El Barrio De Los Faroles.” On November 20, 1985, Paquita’s first great opportunity finally arrives when she attends her first television program: “Hoy Mismo” hosted by Guillermo Ochoa, in which she sang the song “Lámpara Sin Luz.” After leaving the studios, she returned by public transport, in the Metro, without being able to define the fame that television brings, since from that moment on, people mentioned to her that they had seen her on the program. She then noticed that two blocks from her business there were long lines of people waiting to come in to see her sing. That was a key and very successful day, the great window that gave him the opportunity to enter the hearts of thousands of people throughout many places in the Federal District and in the Mexican Republic.

This is how she became more famous. His place became a point where the butcher, the hairdresser and other people who have a popular sector of a neighborhood where there are also politicians, writers, painters, secretaries of state and artists of the time, such as Lucha Villa, Amparo Montes, La Tariácuri,

Jesse & Joy is a Mexican pop duo formed in 2005 by brother and sister; Jesse, male (born December 31, 1982, as Jesse Eduardo Huerta Uecke) and Joy, female (born June 20, 1986, as Tirzah Joy Huerta Uecke), from Mexico City. With a 2017 Grammy win for Best Latin Pop Album, Un Besito Más, and six Latin Grammy’s, the duo released their latest single, “3 A.M.,” a collaboration with Cuban duo Gente De Zona.

Paquita La Del Barrio Se Presenta En The Arena Theatre El 25 De Marzo Francisca Viveros Barradas, mejor conocida como Paquita La Del Barrio, nace un 2 de abril de 1947 en Alto Lucero, Veracruz. Es hija de Aurora Barradas y Tomás Viveros.

La encargada de criar a Paquita fue su tía Lucía. Su infancia no fue fácil, ya que «Chica», como era llamada, desde muy pequeña andaba descalza. Aprendió a cortar café, arribar a las bestias cargadas, se iba a las huertas a cortar mango, vendía pan recorriendo caminos de terracería de un pueblo a otro, desempeñando esas labores que la pobreza te obligan a aprender y practicar en un pequeño pueblo alejado 5 horas de una ciudad.

Alrededor de sus 12 años de edad, mientras montaba a caballo ya cantaba por los caminos. Así fue como Paquita descubrió el talento que años más tarde le daría gran fama, acrecentando la que comenzaba a ganar en ese entonces. En los festivales de su escuela los maestros siempre le pedían que cantara. Fue así como Paquita cantó por primera vez en público.

El tiempo transcurría. Paquita sólo logró terminar la primaria. Fue por sus carencias que se vio obligada a abandonar la escuela. Como dato curioso, los Reyes Magos (equivalente a Santa Claus en Estados Unidos) nunca le dejaron un regalo. Otro dato curioso es que cuando llegaba una película a exhibirse en la iglesia del pueblo, de esas que protagonizaba Pedro Infante en ese tiempo, solía preguntarse si algún día estaría ella ahí, en esa pantalla gigante.

En torno a los 15 años se le da la oportunidad de entrar a trabajar en el Registro Civil de su pueblo. Ahí es cuando conoce al Tesorero de la Presidencia Municipal, su primer gran amor, un señor de nombre Miguel Gerardo, 30 años mayor que ella y, además, un hombre casado.

Con él Paquita procreó a sus 2 hijos: el mayor, Miguel, y Javier, cuya edad se diferencia en apenas un año. Se podría decir que Paquita era el «segundo frente» de este señor, quien se la llevó a vivir a otro pequeño pueblo llamado Chicontepec, donde Paquita, ya cansada de vivir este infierno, se arma de valor y decide dejar a sus hijos encargados con su mamá Aurora.

En 1970 viaja a la Ciudad de México en busca de trabajo. La acompaña su hermana Viola, con la cual había cantado en alguna fiesta de pueblo. Es así como deciden crear el dueto llamado Las Golondrinas. Al radicarse en la gran capital se toparon con muchos obstáculos, llegando como «arrimadas» a una vivienda de bajos recursos en Tepito, un barrio de los más bajos y peligrosos de la ciudad, gracias a unos conocidos del pueblo que al mes les piden que vayan porque según ellos sólo podían quedarse mientras encontraban trabajo. Pues «ni modo»: de nuevo tuvieron que buscar donde vivir.

Una vez establecidas consiguieron trabajo en un pequeño lugar llamado La Fogata Norteña, lugar en que Paquita conoció a su segunda pareja, Alfonso Martínez, quien con el transcurso de los años se convertiría en el famoso «inútil», que es la marca registrada

en que se ha cimentado la propuesta musical de la artista.

Este hombre era el encargado del restaurante de un hotel y al enamorarse de Paquita le propone casarse y mandar traer a sus hijos, todavía encargados en el pequeño pueblo en que se habían quedado con su abuela, y así llevar una vida de familia. Todo parecía favorable a la felicidad. Corría el año 1975. Les ofrecen un contrato para ir de gira por Perú y Chile, pero el problema consistió en que únicamente querían a una, a Viola.

Paquita comenta que por nada hubiera dejado a su hermana si hubiese sido el caso que la elegida hubiera sido ella.

Acostumbrada a cantar con Viola, decide retirarse y pone una pequeña fonda donde vende antojitos mexicanos. Luego, junto con su esposo, decide hacer banquetes y comidas para fiestas. Ella guisaba y se encargaba de las compras. Poco a poco fueron ganando clientes. El año 1977 da a luz unos gemelitos que a dos semanas de nacidos mueren inexplicablemente y a los tres meses fallece su madre que padecía una fatal diabetes.

Ese fue un año muy difícil, lleno de momentos muy tristes. De todas maneras tenia que seguir adelante. Continúa en los banquetes para fiestas y en 1978, después de reunir algún dinero, compra un terreno en la colonia Guerrero, donde a falta de recursos para emprender una construcción formal, entre lonas edifica lo que fue el restaurante llamado Casa Paquita.

Paquita La Del Barrio Continuación de la página anterior preparaba la comida para los clientes; y de repente, se le ocurrió la idea de pasar variedades y empezó a cantar como solista.

Ya para 1979, aún con el dolor de la pérdida de sus gemelitos, se entera que en su pueblo una niña recién nacida, hija de un medio hermano, se debatía entre la vida y la muerte por un misterioso virus. Paquita de inmediato fue por ella y la llevó a la Ciudad de México para hospitalizarla y tratar de que se salvara. Desde ese tiempo nació un gran amor entre ellas, el amor de una madre que lucha y da la vida por lo más sincero que existe, y el cariño desinteresado y la inocencia de una niña que al estar a salvo se convierte en su propia hija después de que su hermano aceptara regalársela. Su hija lleva el nombre de Martha Elena.

En 1984 graba su primer disco. Ella misma lo pagó con sus ahorros ya que no siempre se corre con la suerte de que en una disquera te acepten cuando tu imagen no es la de una mujer exuberante y con grandes encantos aunque se tenga talento. Este fue el caso de Paquita, que tocó muchas puertas sin lograr que se abrieran al primer intento. La persona que la bautizó como Paquita La Del Barrio fue el señor Emilio Jiménez, su director en ese primer disco, que se llamó «El Barrio De Los Faroles».

El 20 noviembre de 1985 llega por fin la primera gran oportunidad de Paquita al acudir a su primer programa de televisión: «Hoy Mismo» conducido por Guillermo Ochoa, en el cual interpretó la canción «Lámpara Sin Luz». Después de salir de los estudios regresó en transporte público, en el Metro, sin lograr definir la fama que brinda la televisión pues desde ese momento la gente le hacía mención de que la habían visto en el programa. Advirtió entonces que a dos cuadras de su negocio había filas larguísimas de gente que esperaba entrar a verla cantar.

Ese fue un día clave y muy exitoso, la gran ventana que le dio la oportunidad de entrar en los corazones de miles de personas a lo largo de muchos lugares en el Distrito Federal y en la República Mexicana.

Así fue haciéndose más famosa. Su lugar se transformó en un punto en el cual lo mismo se encontraba al carnicero, al peluquero y demás gentes que tiene un sector popular de un barrio en que también hay políticos, escritores, pintores, secretarios de estado y artistas de la época, como Lucha Villa, Amparo Montes, La Tariácuri, Yolanda del Río, Chelo Silva, Daniel Santos, Silvia Pinal, y en tiempos más recientes Verónica Castro, Ana Gabriel, Cristian Castro, Salma Hayek, Carmen Salinas, Joaquín Sabina y en

una ocasión el mismísimo Luis Miguel, que pasó a saludar a Paquita.

Su lugar también sirvió de set televisivo para que Thalía grabara su famosa novela «María la del Barrio» en la cual Paquita hizo una aparición especial. Allí nace la famosa frase «me estás oyendo inútil» una ocasión en que su marido tenía dos días de no llegar a casa mientras Paquita se encontraba pasando la variedad. Ella lo vio entrar y se le salió decirle desde la pista en tono interrogativo «me estás oyendo inútil». El público la ovacionó. Desde ese momento ha sido una frase célebre en su carrera.

Paquita no hacía canciones en contra de los hombres. Esto se da cuando su esposo de igual manera llevaba días de parranda y al regresar ella se sube al coche de él donde encuentra un cassette de Chelo Silva cantando «Cheque En Blanco». En ese momento se suelta a llorar y con ese gran sentimiento que la caracteriza empieza a cantar este tipo de canciones que hasta la fecha le han dado fama y estilo inigualables.

En 1992 la compañía BalboaMusart le ofrece incorporarse a sus filas. Esto le permite darse a conocer en España, país que visita al año siguiente, regresando consecutivamente 10 veces y ganándose el cariño del público español.

Un nuevo pesar en su vida. En 1995, después de estar 25 años con su esposo Alfonso Martínez contrata un detective y descubre que él tenía una amante desde hacía 15 años llevando una doble vida y no sólo eso, ya que también tenía una hija de 15 años.

Este fue un gran golpe para Paquita, una angustia que la motivó a cantar aún con más dolor y sentimiento hacia los hombres. Este acontecimiento la llevó a divorciarse y, aunque nunca se separaron del todo, vivieron juntos pero no revueltos, ya que Paquita lo describe como el amor de su vida, hasta su muerte en noviembre del año 2000.

En 1997 fue contratada por el legendario promotor Ruly Vega para una gira por la Unión Americana. Hasta el día de hoy esta mancuerna ha cosechado un fascinante ascenso al éxito en la carrera de Paquita realizando giras en cinco años consecutivos junto Vicente Fernández y diversas presentaciones al lado de Juan Gabriel, Jenni

Rivera, Joan Sebastián, Ramón Ayala, K-Paz de la Sierra, Lupita D´Alessio, Ezequiel Peña, la Arrolladora Banda El Limón, Lupillo Rivera, y El Chapo de Sinaloa, entre otros.

En su discografía se acumulan 33 discos grabados con acompañamiento de banda, trío, sonora, grupo norteño y mariachi, de los cuales se han vendido más de 20 millones de copias.

Entre sus temas más famosos se destacan «Tres Veces Te Engañé», «Rata De Dos Patas» , «Las Rodilleras», «Las Mujeres Mandan», «La Última Parada», «Me Saludas A La Tuya», «Soltero Maduro, Chiquito», «Hombres Malvados» y otros. La mayoría de estas canciones pertenecen a su compositor de cabecera: Manuel Eduardo Toscano.

En 2009 grabó al lado del cantautor guatemalteco Ricardo Arjona la canción titulada «Ni Tú Ni Yo», que despertó gran interés en el público logrando un éxito tan fenomenal que gracias a esta mancuerna a finales del mismo año realizaron una gira conjunta por primer vez por Argentina y Colombia.

En el cine Paquita La Del Barrio ha realizado intervenciones en las películas «Modelo Antiguo», junto a Silvia Pinal, y «Cansada de Besar Sapos» al lado del grupo Camila. Además, ha recibido innumerables premios y reconocimientos en México, Estados Unidos y Centroamérica.

Este año 2011 por primera ocasión en el nuevo premio Billboard de la Música Regional Mexicana Paquita La Del Barrio recibe el galardón «La Voz» en el marco de sus 40 años de trayectoria como reina y defensora de las mujeres. Además, la artista que graba para Balboa Records/ Discos Musart está nominada al premio Latin Grammy en la categoría de Mejor Álbum Mariachi del Año por la excelencia artística de su disco «Eres Un Farsante».

El Dúo Pop Mexicano Jesse y Joy Se Presentan En El Bayou Music Center El 26 De Marzo El dúo pop mexicano Jesse y Joy se presentarán en Houston este mes en el Bayou Music Center el 26 de marzo.

Jesse & Joy es un dúo de pop mexicano formado en 2005 por hermano y hermana; Jesse, hombre (nacido el 31 de diciembre de 1982 como Jesse Eduardo Huerta Uecke) y Joy, mujer (nacida el 20 de junio de 1986 como Tirzah Joy Huerta Uecke), de la Ciudad de México. Con un premio Grammy 2017 por Mejor Álbum Pop Latino, Un Besito Más, y seis Latin Grammy, el dúo lanzó su último sencillo, “3 A.M.”, una colaboración con el dúo cubano Gente De Zona. Sus padres son de la Ciudad de México y Estados Unidos (padre mexicano y madre estadounidense). En 2001, cuando tenían 18 y 15 años respectivamente, comenzaron a escribir letras y canciones con su padre. Firmaron con el sello Warner el 18 de abril de 2005. Jesse toca el piano, la guitarra y canta algunos coros para las canciones, mientras que Joy toca la guitarra y es la vocalista principal. Presentado en el Teletón Mexicano de 2005, Jesse & Joy lanzaron su álbum debut Esta Es Mi Vida en 2006 a través de Warner Music México. Guadalupe Contreras Ramos, conocida como Lupita D’Alessio, es una cantante y actriz mexicana, reconocida por ser una de las mejores intérpretes de su país, gracias a la fuerza y sentimiento que transmite con cada una de sus interpretaciones; también es llamada “La leona dormida”. Nació en Tijuana, Baja California, el 10 de marzo de 1954 y, es hija de Poncho D’Alessio y Euralia Ramos Villanueva. Los inicios de la artista en el mundo del espectáculo, se dieron gracias a las participaciones musicales en un programa de variedades que dirigía su papá en Tijuana.

En el año 1971, Lupita D’Alessio comenzó su carrera formal Participando en el primer Festival Internacional de la Canción Popular, donde Interpretó la canción “Con Amor”, del Autor Adolfo Girón. La canción tuvo una buena aceptación y la disquera Orfeón la firmó en exclusividad, iniciando así su carrera musical. Además, “Con Amor”, fue su primer sencillo, acompañado por “A Vivir”; ambos sencillos se incluyeron en su primer Long Play titulado “Mi corazón es un gitano”, que incluyó 11 canciones, entre las que se destacó “Mi corazón es un gitano”.

Para el año 1972, grabó el sencillo “Buenas Noches Cenicienta”. Además, Grabó su segundo Long Play titulado “Eres Tu”. El disco contó con 10 canciones, donde se destacó un dueto con su esposo de esa época Jorge Vargas Parole.

Un año después, Lupita D’Alessio hizo un nuevo disco, pero esta vez junto a Jorge Vargas. El disco se llamó “Vete de Aquí”, el cual incluía interpretaciones de ambas cantadas en dueto y en solitario. Además, se destacaron canciones como Vete de Aquí, Mariposa y Esta Noche.

Para el año 1975, grabó la canción “Mundo de Juguete”, el cual se usó para la telenovela infantil del mismo nombre.

También, inició a la grabación de un disco de temática infantil al que llamó “Mundo de Juguete”. Uno de los temas que se convirtió en éxito fue “Erase una vez”. Al año siguiente, Orfeon editó el disco con las canciones de la obra La Novicia Rebelde, en la que Lupita interpretaba el papel principal.

Lupita D’Alessio Se Presenta En The 713 Music Hall El 5 de Marzo con Mariachi”. Se destacaron canciones como “Tú Sigues Siendo el Mismo”, “No Cierres Tus Ojos” y “Que Sea Mi Condena”.

En 1978 grabó éxitos como: Pacto de Amor, Meceme, Desencuentro y Juro Que Nunca Volveré, el cual Juan Gabriel había escrito para Lucha Villa, pero la versión de Lupita fue un gran éxito hasta la actualidad. Ese mismo año, participó en el Festival OTI en la Ciudad de México, en el cual resultó ganadora interpretando la canción “Como Tú” de Lolita de la Colina. Con ese triunfo, se ganó el derecho de representar a México en el Festival OTI Internacional que tuvo lugar en Santiago de Chile el 2 de diciembre de 1978, donde logró el tercer lugar.

Un año después, grabó 3 nuevos discos: “Solo Soy Una Mujer”, con temas como Déjame y Solo Soy Una Mujer; “Aquí estoy yo”, el cual incluyó temas como Aquí Estoy Yo de Lolita de la Colina y Mi Amor Sin Ti; y el siguiente, “En Concierto”, el cual incluyó temas como Lo Siento Mi Amor e Inocente Pobre Amiga, 2 de los mayores éxitos de Lupita hasta la fecha.

Fue en esta etapa donde Lupita encontró el enfoque con el que siguió su carrera en la siguiente década, interpretando

canciones feministas.

En el año 1980, Lupita D’Alessio tomó como su compositora de cabecera a Lolita de la Colina. Además, grabó su siguiente disco con temas destacados como: Ya No Regreso Contigo, Punto y Coma, A Ver Si Ahora, Aprendiendo a Amar y La Diferencia del cantautor Juan Gabriel.

Durante la década de los ochenta, Lupita D’Alessio tuvo su mejor época, por lo que continuó grabando canciones de otras cantantes haciéndolas grandes éxitos. Lupita D’Alessio Continuación de la página anterior el sello Orfeón y firmó con el sello discográfico Sony, con el objetivo de difundir su música e Internacionalizarse.

Con Sony grabó algunos de sus éxitos como “Leona dormida”, canción que le dio el sobrenombre con el que hoy es conocida, y “Que no me doy cuenta”. En ese tiempo, grabó álbumes como: No me pregunten (1990), Gaviota del Aire (1991), Boleros de siempre (1992), La D’Alessio (1993), Desde mi libertad (1995) y Si yo pudiera detener el tiempo (1997).

El 23 de abril de 1993, Lupita fue detenida por Evasión Fiscal; afortunadamente, con el apoyo de Fanny Schatz y Emilio Azcarraga, tras 15 días de detención, logró salir libre.

En el año 2000, Lupita D’Alessio firmó un contrato con la disquera Azteca Music, con la cual grabó el disco titulado “Estoy Aquí”, que tuvo la producción de Pepe Aguilar. El disco se destacó por canciones como “La Aprendiz” de Alejandro Sanz, “Incompatibles y “Espejo”. Además, el álbum tuvo ventas destacadas. Debido a la mala promoción de la disquera hacía lupita, ella decidió finalizar el contrato con la productora.

Para el año 2004, lanzó el álbum “Cuando el amor te besa”, el cual se hizo bajo un sello musical independiente. A pesar de que el disco fue bien recibido, el éxito no se reflejó en las ventas alcanzadas.

Warner Music. El discó logró grandes ventas en su lanzamiento, ocupando el tercer lugar en iTunes. Se destacaron canciones como: “No Preguntes con quien” y “Es un Peligro”. Además, fue jurado del programa Lo Que más Quieres.

En el año 2014 grabó VideoClip de la canción “Es Un Peligro”. Además, realizó el Tour Siempre Amigas, junto a la cantante Yuri.

Para el año 2015, Lupita D’Alessio recibió un disco de oro por ventas alcanzadas con el álbum “Cuando Se Ama Como Tu”.

En el año 2017, Lupita D’Alessio interpretó la canción “Algo Divino” para la telenovela “Enamorándome de Ramón” de Televisa; de igual forma, también se llevó a cabo la producción de una serie, basada en la vida personal y musical de esta interprete.

Entre los años 2004 y 2005, Lupita D’Alessio tuvo problemas con los medios de comunicación debido a sus cambios de estado de ánimo, lo que hacía que los medios la trataran de bipolar. Además, estos especulaban que sus problemas eran causados por la superación de su adicción a la cocaína, droga que consumió por muchos años.

En el año 2007 se convirtió a la religión cristiana, por lo que dejó el consumo de drogas y alcohol, y decidió ingresar a una clínica para su desintoxicación. Un año después, su salud se vio afectada debido a un problema en la tiroides, lo que le causó aumento de peso y tuvo que retirarse un tiempo de los escenarios.

Trabajos discográficos En el año 2006, Lupita D’Alessio lanzó el álbum titulado “El Adiós”, el cual fue presentado en el mes de febrero.

Se rumoró que ese trabajo marcaba el retiro de la cantante de los escenarios, ya que estaba cansada del maltrato de la prensa, que durante años publicó noticias amarillistas personales y de su música.

Juan Luis Guerra Se Presenta En Smart Financial Center El 5 de Marzo Juan Luis Guerra es un cantante, compositor, compositor y productor discográfico dominicano que ha ganado varios premios y ha superventas. Con su suave rango de varias octavas y su entrega conmovedora, ha vendido más de 70 millones de discos en todo el mundo y ha ganado muchos premios de la industria, incluidos la friolera de 21 Latin Grammy. Él y su banda 440 son amados en todo el mundo amante de la música latina por sus innovaciones en el merengue y por resucitar a la bachata como una fuerza comercial. A Son de Guerra de 2010 fue certificado dos veces platino y ganó tres premios Grammy Latinos. Todo Tiene Su Hora, de 2014, encabezó las listas de álbumes latinos y llegó a la mitad superior del Top 200. Su impulso se debió en gran parte al éxito internacional “Tus Besos”, que fusionó astutamente la bachata y el doo wop, y los inicios del rock & rollo.

El Literal, tremendamente diverso y maravillosamente optimista, apareció en 2019 con críticas entusiastas y ventas enérgicas; alcanzó el puesto número siete en la lista de álbumes tropicales.

Guerra es hijo de un beisbolista profesional y creció junto a la Galería Nacional de Música. Cuando era adolescente, fue influenciado por los Beatles y la música de los hippies estadounidenses. Inicialmente, aprendió

por sí mismo los conceptos básicos de la guitarra, pero después de ganar un concurso, asistió al Conservatorio Nacional con una beca. Luego, uno de sus instructores lo ayudó a ingresar al prestigioso Berklee College of Music en Massachusetts y lo introdujo a los muchos géneros del jazz. Con el tiempo, extrañó la República Dominicana y volvió a experimentar mezclando música local con influencia africana, canciones folclóricas y jazz con su grupo 440. La banda toma su nombre del patrón de afinación universal de la nota “A”, 440 Hertz. El nombre fue elegido por el hermano de Guerra, José Gilberto, quien solía sentarse a verlos ensayar. Un día comentó que parecían tan obsesionados con estar en perfecta sintonía que deberían llamarse así.

La nueva música, llamada “bachata-merengue”, pronto ganó una gran aclamación en la República Dominicana. El grupo fue seleccionado por su gobierno para representar al país en el Festival Internacional de Música de la OTI, la Organización de Televisión Iberoamericana. En 1988, Guerra y 440 tuvieron uno de sus mayores éxitos, Ojalá Que Llueva Café, que se convirtió en el tercer álbum más vendido en América Latina. Ese año perdió a su vocalista principal, Maridalia Hernández, quien se fue para seguir una carrera en solitario en Europa, dejando a Guerra como la nueva cantante principal.

En 1991, lanzó Bachata Rose; sus cinco sencillos exitosos lo impulsaron a alcanzar el estatus de éxito en todo el continente americano, lo que le valió a Guerra su primer Grammy en los EE. UU. El álbum fue particularmente popular en Los Ángeles y pronto Guerra y su banda estaban de gira por los EE. UU. continentales y los trópicos latinos.

El sencillo “Las Avispas” ganó en las categorías de Mejor Gospel Pop y Merengue Tropical, la primera vez en la historia de la ceremonia de premiación que una canción ganó en dos categorías simultáneamente. Guerra una vez más viajó sin descanso. Apareció junto a una lista de estrellas de peso pesado en el concierto del 50 aniversario del Berklee College of Music: Herbie Hancock, Michel Camilo, Pat Metheny y Paul Simon también estaban en el cartel.

Apareció como acto de apertura en la gira 360 de U2, así como en la gira A Bigger Bang de los Rolling Stones.

Su siguiente álbum, La llave de mi corazón, fue lanzado a principios de la primavera de 2007. Ingresó a las listas latinas de Billboard en el número uno y permaneció allí durante cuatro semanas.

En octubre de 2014, Guerra lanzó el sencillo y el video de “Tus Besos”, una pista de bachata fuertemente inspirada y con sabor al sonido del doo wop de principios de los 60. En 2019, Guerra y 440 avisaron a sus seguidores que un álbum estaba a punto de llegar con el lanzamiento del sencillo y el video de “Kitipun”. Filmado en un estilo de historia al estilo de Tik Tok, rápidamente subió tanto a las listas de streaming como a las de la industria.

El veraniego Literal de larga duración se emitió en mayo y mostró una plétora de estilos que incluyen bachata, merengue, salsa, jazz y pop. Si bien alcanzó el puesto 31 en las listas de álbumes latinos, alcanzó el séptimo lugar en la lista de álbumes tropicales y obtuvo la certificación de oro.
