Pop Icon Cyndi Lauper Brings “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour” to Houston’s Toyota Center

In a thrilling announcement for music lovers, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award-winning artist Cyndi Lauper is set to electrify the stage of Houston’s Toyota Center on November 16th as part of her “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour.” This performance marks a significant milestone in the career of the iconic singer-songwriter, as she embarks on what is being described as her final major tour. However, fans can rest assured that this farewell tour doesn’t signal Lauper’s retirement from the music business; rather, it’s a celebration of her illustrious career and a chance for her to connect with fans on a grand scale one last time.

Lauper’s career, spanning over

four decades, has been nothing short of extraordinary. Born on June 22, 1953, in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, New York, Lauper’s journey to stardom was not without its challenges. She dropped out of high school in her late teens to pursue her passion for music, singing in various local cover bands. Her early struggles, including a period when she had to file for bankruptcy after her first band Blue Angel disbanded, only fueled her determination to succeed.

The turning point came in 1983 when Lauper released her debut solo album, “She’s So Unusual.” The album was a game-changer, not just for Lauper but for the entire music industry. It catapulted her to stardom, making her the first woman in history to have four top-five singles from a debut album.

These hits included the iconic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time After Time,” “She Bop,” and “All Through the Night.” The album’s success was bolstered by heavy MTV support, particularly for the “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” video, which became a cultural phenomenon.

Lauper’s impact extended far beyond her musical achievements. With her distinctive voice, colorful fashion sense, and unapologetic personality, she became a symbol of female empowerment and individuality. Her music, a unique blend of pop, new wave, and rock, with touches of reggae and funk, appealed to a wide audience and helped bridge the gap between underground and mainstream music scenes.

Throughout her career, Lauper has consistently reinvented herself. Her sophomore album, “True Colors,” released in 1986, showcased a more mature sound while still maintaining her signature style. The title track became another number-one hit and an anthem for the LGBTQ+ community. In subsequent years, Lauper explored various musical genres, from the introspective pop-rock of “A Night to Remember” to the adult contemporary sounds of “Sisters of Avalon.”

The new millennium saw Lauper continuing to evolve as an artist. Her 2003 album “At Last” demonstrated her ability to interpret classic pop standards, while 2010’s “Memphis Blues” showcased her versatility by delving into the blues genre. In 2016, she surprised fans with “Detour,” a country music album featuring collaborations with legends like Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris.

But perhaps one of Lauper’s most significant achievements came in 2013 when she wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical “Kinky Boots.” The production was a massive success, earning 13 Tony nominations and

winning six, including Best Musical. Lauper made history by becoming the first woman to win the Tony for Best Original Score by herself, adding another prestigious accolade to her already impressive collection.

The “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour,” produced by Live Nation, is Lauper’s first major tour in a decade. The 23-city headlining tour kicks off on October 18, 2024, in Montreal and will traverse North America before concluding in Paris on February 28, 2025, after 35 shows. This tour is not just a series of concerts; it’s a celebration of Lauper’s enduring legacy and her connection with fans across generations.

When Lauper announced the tour in June 2024, she was quick to clarify that while this may be her last major tour, she’s not bidding farewell to music altogether. “I’m strong now, but I don’t know what I’m going to be like in four years,” Lauper explained, emphasizing her desire to celebrate with fans while she’s at her peak. She added that she will remain open to occasional performances and musical projects in the future, reassuring fans that this is not the end of

her musical journey, but rather a new chapter.

The Houston show at the Toyota Center promises to be nothing short of spectacular. Fans can expect to hear all of Lauper’s greatest hits, from the empowering “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” to the heartfelt “Time After Time” and the uplifting “True Colors.” But it won’t just be a night of nostalgia. Lauper, known for her energetic and theatrical performances, is sure to bring her signature style and infectious energy to the stage, creating an unforgettable experience for all in attendance.

The timing of the farewell tour coincides with several exciting projects that offer fans a deeper look into Lauper’s life and career. “Let the Canary Sing,” a feature-length documentary exploring Lauper’s extraordinary journey, premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2023. The film provides an intimate portrait of the artist, tracing her rise from a troubled childhood to international stardom and her ongoing impact on popular culture.

Complementing the documentary, Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, has released a companion album of the same

name. This career-spanning collection, available on vinyl and as a digital expanded edition, takes listeners on a musical journey through Lauper’s evolving artistry. From her early new wave hits to her more recent explorations in blues and country, the album showcases the breadth and depth of Lauper’s musical talents.

As fans gear up for the Houston concert, they’re encouraged to secure their tickets early for what is expected to be a sellout event. The Toyota Center, known for its world-class facilities and excellent acoustics, provides the perfect backdrop for this landmark performance. The venue’s capacity and state-of-the-art sound system will ensure that every note of Lauper’s powerful voice reaches every corner of the arena.

Throughout her career, Lauper has been much more than just a musician. She’s been a tireless advocate for numerous causes, particularly those supporting women’s rights, the LGBTQ+ community, and HIV/AIDS awareness. Her commitment to social justice has been unwavering, from her support of the True Colors United, an organization she co-founded to address homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth, to her vocal

advocacy for equality and human rights.

This dedication to activism adds another layer of significance to the farewell tour. Each performance is not just a celebration of Lauper’s music, but also of the values she has championed throughout her career. Fans attending the Houston show will be part of something larger than a concert – they’ll be participating in a event that honors both artistic achievement and social consciousness.

As the date of the Houston concert approaches, the city is buzzing with anticipation. Local fans are sharing memories of their first Cyndi Lauper concerts, introducing her music to younger generations, and preparing for what promises to be an emotional and exhilarating night. Music critics and industry insiders are also taking notice, with many reflecting on Lauper’s enduring influence on pop culture and her role in shaping the sound and image of 1980s pop music.

For Lauper herself, this tour is a chance to connect with her fans on a deeply personal level. Despite her many accolades and achievements, she has always maintained a strong bond with her audience, known for her down-to-

earth personality and genuine appreciation for her fans. This farewell tour allows her to express that gratitude on a grand scale, giving longtime supporters and new fans alike the chance to be part of this historic musical journey.

As Cyndi Lauper prepares to take the stage in Houston, it’s clear that this is more than just a concert – it’s a celebration of a remarkable career, a thank you to devoted fans, and a testament to the enduring power of music to unite and inspire. While this may be her last major tour, fans can take comfort in knowing that Cyndi Lauper’s musical journey will continue, albeit in different forms, for years to come. The “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour” is not an end, but a new beginning, a chance for Lauper to explore new creative avenues while continuing to touch the lives of millions through her music and activism.

For those lucky enough to attend the Houston show, it will be a night to remember – a chance to sing along to timeless hits, to witness the electric energy of a true pop icon, and to be part of music history. As the lights dim and the first chords ring out at the Toyota Center on November 16th, one thing is certain: Cyndi Lauper, the girl who just wanted to have fun, will once again prove why she remains one of the most beloved and influential artists of her generation.

Three Dog Night Returns to Houston with New Album and Classic Hits

Founding Member Danny Hutton Promises Fresh Material and Fan Favorites at Arena Theatre’s November Show

The legendary rock band Three Dog Night is set to make their triumphant return to Houston, taking center stage at The Arena Theatre on Friday, November 15. In an exclusive interview, founding member Danny Hutton shared exciting news with Houston Music News about not only the upcoming concert but also revealed details about the band’s first full album of new material since the 1970s.

“We just finished mastering it last night,” Hutton announced enthusiasti-

cally. “It’s going to be coming out through Primary Wave, and I’m really, really proud of it.” This new release marks a significant milestone for the band, as their last release in 1983, “It’s a Jungle,” was only a five-song EP.

The story of Three Dog Night began in the mid-1960s when Hutton was working as a solo artist in Los Angeles. After his solo career cooled down, a fortuitous friendship with Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys would help shape his musical future. “I became good friends with Brian Wilson,” Hutton recalled. “I was there for the whole ‘Pet

Sounds’ album and all that stuff. I just watched him in the studio like a student. He was brilliant, he’s a genius. I learned so much from him.”

The concept for Three Dog Night came to Hutton in an unlikely moment of inspiration. “I was driving in LA past Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, and there was a concourse de la dance, all these cars on the lawn from all over the world. When they were next to each other, I said, ‘they’re brilliant, they’re all different.’ And I thought, ‘three lead singers.’ That’s just like cars. One was a

blues singer, I’m more of a pop singer, and the other guy is a ballad singer. I thought, if I get three incredible lead singers together, man, how can we be stopped if we have the right songs?”

The origin of the band’s unique name has been a subject of debate over the years. When asked about whether June Fairchild or Van Dyke Parks suggested the name, Hutton provided clarity: “It’s from a magazine called Mankind Magazine, historical magazines, and it was just my magazine, actually, and I used to keep in the bathroom. It was about the Aborigines when they had the walkabouts. They used dogs as blankets, so a three dog night was a cold night.” He added that their manager was initially furious with the name choice, saying it “sounds like a circus act.”

Their first album, recorded in late 1968, was completed in just four days. The band’s journey to success wasn’t immediate - their first single, “Nobody,” failed to chart. However, fate had different plans. “We went out on tour with a couple other acts. They were brand new, young acts. Nobody kind of knew them. So we went out, $6 ticket. Want to hear who it was? James Taylor opened for Three Dog Night and Led Zeppelin,” Hutton recalled with a laugh.

Success finally came when radio DJs began playing a different song from their debut album. “All of a sudden, our record company’s DJs started phoning and saying, ‘Hey, everybody’s talking about this song on your first album.’ So we released it, and it was called ‘One.’ It was our first gold single, and that kind of got it all going for us.”

The band would go on to achieve an impressive 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, a feat that still amazes Hutton. Their approach to selecting songs was uniquerather than simply covering other artists’ hits, they sought out overlooked gems

and transformed them. “We never covered anybody. We resurrected songs,” Hutton explained. “Like one was a song from Harry Nielsen’s album that came out, and nothing happened with the song. We grabbed it. One of our attributes is we’re good at arranging.”

Their recording techniques in those early days were vastly different from today’s methods. Hutton reflected on recording their hit “Liar” in the bathroom hallway of a former Chinese restaurant. “Phil Spector came up to me at the Whiskey a Go Go and said, ‘Man, I love the echo on that.’” This organic approach to sound creation is something Hutton misses in modern recording. “In the 50s, you’d have a recording session in New York at eight o’clock at night in September, and that would capture that evening. It’s a time capsule.”

Throughout their career, Three Dog Night has been known for their versatility and willingness to explore different musical styles. “Our new album is the same way we do every kind of genre you can think of - easy listening, pop rock and roll, country,” Hutton explains. “We’re all over the map.” This musical diversity has been a hallmark of their success, leading to collaborations with various artists and even the London Symphony Orchestra.

The current lineup features a mix of veteran musicians and fresh talent, including two of Hutton’s sons. While Michael Allsop no longer tours with the

band due to health concerns, he features prominently on the new album. David Morgan continues to contribute vocals and has written what Hutton describes as potentially his favorite song on the new record.

At 82, Hutton maintains the same vocal power that helped establish Three Dog Night as one of rock’s most successful bands. “I have not lowered the key in any song,” he notes proudly. “I know a lot of my friends, for whatever reason, don’t sing as high as they did. Nothing wrong with that, but I don’t have a problem. I watch what I’m doing. I weigh probably what I weighed in my 20s. I stopped smoking years and years ago, and stopped partying years and years ago.”

The upcoming performance at The Arena Theatre presents a unique challenge and opportunity for the band. The venue’s distinctive in-the-round setting features a revolving stage that requires constant awareness and movement. “It’s a traveling stage,” Hutton acknowledges with a laugh. “We’ve done that before. They’re very strange, but it’s fun. That’s what I like about it. We play indoors, outdoors, opera houses, symphonies. Every night is different.”

Concert-goers can expect a carefully crafted show that spans the band’s impressive catalog. “The arc of the show as we come out, we just kind of

Three Dog Night

show them that we can do about anything,” Hutton explains. “First couple of songs, we hit them with the hits, and then the arc of the show kind of slows, reduced to ballads that are hits, and then slowly we bring it back up to the end.”

The band plans to showcase at least one new song from the album, performed acapella, demonstrating their continued vocal prowess.

What sets Three Dog Night apart from many of their contemporaries is their refusal to become merely a nostalgia act. While they certainly pay homage to their illustrious past, the band continues to evolve and explore new musical territories. Their influence extends beyond their own recordings - they helped launch the careers of numerous songwriters, including Randy Newman and Paul Williams, and even assisted early in Elton John’s career. “I helped Elton, Reggie Dwight. His first transat-

(continued from previous page)

lantic phone call was from him,” Hutton recalled. “Because of me, that’s what got his career going. Him and Bernie, we helped them pay the rent when they started.”

Tickets for this highly anticipated event are set to go on sale soon, and given the band’s popularity and the venue’s limited capacity, they are expected to sell out quickly. Prices will range to accommodate various budgets, with special VIP packages available for those seeking an enhanced concert experience.

As Three Dog Night approaches its sixth decade in the music industry, their influence on popular culture remains as strong as ever. Their songs continue to feature prominently in movies, TV shows, and commercials, introducing new generations to their infectious melodies and powerful vocals. This

enduring presence in the media landscape has helped the band maintain its relevance and expand its fan base well beyond those who grew up with their music in the 1960s and 70s.

The November 15 concert at The Arena Theatre promises to be more than just a night of entertainment; it’s a celebration of a band that refuses to rest on its laurels, continuing to create new music while honoring their legendary catalog. As Hutton puts it, their goal remains unchanged: to help audiences “forget about the outside world” and leave with a smile on their face. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, this promises to be an unforgettable evening with one of rock’s most enduring and influential bands.

Louisiana Blues Icon Tab Benoit Brings “I Hear Thunder” Tour to Humble, Marking Triumphant Return After 13-Year Recording Silence

In a musical homecoming that blues enthusiasts have anticipated for more than a decade, Grammy-nominated guitarist and Louisiana music legend Tab Benoit is set to electrify the Charles Bender Performing Arts Center in Humble on November 9th. The performance, part of his “I Hear Thunder” Tour, celebrates a momentous return to recording that proves some things are worth the wait.

Benoit’s latest album, “I Hear Thunder,” released on his own Whiskey

Bayou Records label, has already made a seismic impact on the blues world, claiming the coveted #1 spot on Billboard’s Blues Album Chart this September. This achievement underscores what devoted fans have known for years - that Benoit’s thirteen-year studio hiatus has only served to deepen and enrich his musical storytelling.

The new record, a masterful collection of ten original tracks, represents a creative renaissance for the Houma, Louisiana native. Each song pulsates with the raw energy and

authentic bayou blues that have become Benoit’s trademark, while pushing into new sonic territory. The album’s production, handled by Benoit himself at Whiskey Bayou Studios, captures the organic, live-wire energy that has made his performances legendary.

At the heart of “I Hear Thunder” is an extraordinary collaboration between Benoit and fellow guitar virtuoso Anders Osborne, whose distinctive touch graces nine of the album’s tracks. Their musical partnership, built on years of shared stages and mutual respect, creates a rich tapestry of sound that both honors and transcends traditional blues frameworks. The addition of The Meters’ bassist George Porter Jr. on tracks like “Little Queenie” and “I’m A Write That Down” brings an extra layer of New Orleans funk to the mix, creating a sound that’s deeply rooted in Louisiana’s musical soil.

The album’s track listing reads like a journey through the Louisiana bayou, from the thunderous title track to the contemplative “Still Gray,” the playful “Watching the Gators Roll In,” and the soul-stirring “Inner Child.” “The Ghost of Gatemouth Brown” pays homage to one of Benoit’s musical heroes while showcasing his own distinctive guitar style. Each song tells a story, painted with the bold strokes of Benoit’s guitar work and colored by his evocative vocals.

Benoit’s musical journey began long before his 1992 debut album “Nice and Warm” caught the attention of blues fans nationwide. Growing up in Houma, he absorbed the rich musical traditions of Louisiana, starting as a drummer before finding his true voice on the guitar. His career has since been decorated with multiple Blues Music Awards and four Grammy nominations, establishing him as one of the genre’s most respected voices.

But Benoit’s influence extends far beyond his musical achievements. In 2001, he emerged as a powerful advocate for Louisiana’s endangered wetlands, a cause that earned him the prestigious Governor’s Award. His creation of the Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars -

Tab Benoit

(continued from previous page)

featuring luminaries like Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, George Porter Jr., Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Johnny Vidacovich, Johnny Sansone, and Waylon Thibodeaux - demonstrated how music could be a vehicle for environmental awareness and social change.

This environmental activism has profoundly influenced Benoit’s music, infusing his songs with a sense of place and purpose that sets them apart in the contemporary blues landscape. His lyrics often reflect the urgent need to preserve Louisiana’s natural heritage, while his guitar work echoes the wild, untamed spirit of the bayou.

The current tour finds Benoit backed by an exceptional rhythm section featuring longtime bassist Corey Duplechin and drummer Terence Higgins. Together, they create a sonic foundation that allows Benoit’s guitar work to soar while maintaining the deep groove that is essential to Louisiana blues. Adding a special family touch to this leg of the tour is Tyron Benoit, Tab’s brother, whose presence reinforces the deep familial and cultural connections that characterize Louisiana’s musical community.

Recent performances on the “I Hear Thunder” tour have drawn enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences alike. Reviews consistently highlight the extraordinary interplay between Benoit and his fellow musicians, as well as the emotional depth of the new material. Shows frequently culminate in extended encores that showcase Benoit’s versatility, including occasions where he returns to his drumming roots, much to the audience’s delight.

The creation of Whiskey Bayou Records in 2017, with partner and manager Rueben Williams, has given Benoit a platform to not only release his own music but also support other artists in the roots music community. The label has become home to established artists such as Eric McFadden, Damon Fowler, Eric Johanson, Jeff McCarty, and Dash

Rip Rock, furthering Benoit’s role as a custodian of American roots music.

The impact of Benoit’s fourteenyear recording hiatus following his award-winning 2014 album “Medicine” has only served to heighten anticipation for “I Hear Thunder.” Rather than diminishing his creative powers, the break appears to have provided time for reflection and renewal, resulting in some of the most powerful music of his career.

His upcoming performance at the Charles Bender Performing Arts Center promises to be more than just a concert; it’s a celebration of Louisiana’s rich musical heritage and a testament to the enduring power of the blues. Audiences can expect a dynamic show that draws from both the new album and Benoit’s extensive catalog, delivered with the passion and authenticity that have

become his hallmarks.

In an era where much of popular music seems increasingly disconnected from its roots, Tab Benoit stands as a reminder of the power of authentic, soulful expression. His music speaks to both the traditions of the past and the challenges of the present, delivered with a virtuosity that never overshadows the emotional truth at the heart of the blues.

The Humble performance represents another milestone in a career that has consistently demonstrated how traditional blues can remain vital and relevant in the modern world. For both longtime fans and newcomers to his music, Tab Benoit’s appearance promises an evening of exceptional music from an artist who continues to push the boundaries of his craft while remaining true to his Louisiana roots.

New Orleans Roots Rocker Jamie Lynn Vessels Set for Two Houston Area Shows

New Orleans-based roots rock artist Jamie Lynn Vessels is bringing her powerful voice and authentic songwriting to the Houston area with two upcoming performances. Vessels will take the stage at Shady Acres Saloon in The Houston Heights on November 14th, followed by a show at Green Oak Tavern in Humble on November 15th.

Known for creating a strong sense of community through her performances, Vessels has made a name for herself in the New Orleans roots music scene. Her latest album, “If I’m Being Honest,” showcases her bluesy guitar work and unflinching storytelling, tackling subjects ranging from addiction to love and healing. The album, crafted during the pandemic lockdown, reflects a period of deep personal exploration and growth for the artist.

“I want everyone to feel seen and included,” says Vessels, whose music

resonates with what she calls “the wanderers, the dreamers, the fighters.” Her latest collection includes powerful tracks like “Damn Dirty Demons,” which confronts addiction with swamp rock riffs played on cigar box guitar, and “Eulogy at Joshua Tree,” a haunting tribute to country music legend Gram Parsons. The album also features “Pulse,” a poignant reflection on the Orlando nightclub shooting, demonstrating Vessels’ willingness to engage with challenging social issues.

The path to becoming a roots rock performer wasn’t a straight line for Vessels. Her musical journey began with childhood piano lessons before picking up the guitar at age 10, when she formed her first band with neighborhood kids. Under the guidance of what she describes as “a rock and roll guy with long red hair,” she developed her distinctive edge. However, initially believing music wasn’t a sustainable career path, she pursued higher education, earning a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice in Massachusetts.

It was during graduate school that music’s magnetic pull began to draw her back.

The decision to move to New Orleans after graduation proved transformative. “Being around jazz and blues and eclectic types of musicians has really shaped my sound. I found myself,” Vessels shares. The rich musical heritage of New Orleans has become an integral part of her artistic identity, influencing both her sound and approach to performance.

Drawing inspiration from artists like Sheryl Crow, Beth Hart, and Brandi Carlile, Vessels combines rock and roll energy with the eclectic influences of her adopted hometown. Her Catholic upbringing surfaces in her songwriting, as she notes, “It seems like every album that I record has some heaven/hell, demon/angel kind of reference.” This spiritual undertone adds depth to her explorations of human experience and emotion.

Today, she performs with a collaborative band that helps bring her songs to life, creating what she describes as “a chemical reaction that results in the raucous explosion of rock and roll energy and lyrical complexity.” The creative process often begins with Vessels bringing completed songs to the band, telling them, “here’s how I want it to go. You guys put your flavor on it.” Other times, spontaneous collaboration leads to new material, starting with a simple riff or lyric that the group develops together.

During the pandemic lockdown, when her performance schedule went “from 60 to 0 in no time flat,” Vessels took the opportunity to delve deeper into her personal life and mental health. This period of introspection included working through trauma, recovery, food issues, neurodivergence, depression, and anxiety. These experiences have further informed her songwriting and strengthened her connection with audiences who might be facing similar challenges.

Vessels’ live performances are known for transforming rooms full of strangers into connected communities, a skill she honed during the pandemic through livestreams when in-person performances weren’t possible. Her music often explores themes of hope and healing, particularly evident in songs like “Down,” which pledges unwavering loyalty and support to loved ones facing their darkest moments.

Fans can expect evenings of original New Orleans Roots Rock delivered with what Vessels describes as her “unabashed honesty.” Her performances promise to showcase both the harder-hitting aspects of her music and the hopeful messages that consistently weave through her work, creating an atmosphere where community flourishes through shared human experience.

For more information about Jamie Lynn Vessels, audiences can follow her on various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, or stream her music on Spotify and Apple Music.

“Everything I Thought It Was,” released on March 15, 2024, through RCA Records, has already made significant waves in the music industry. remarkable career trajectory. Born on January 31, 1981, in Memphis, Tennessee, he first caught the public eye as a child performer on “The New Mickey Mouse Club” in the early ’90s. His ascent to superstardom began in earnest as one of the lead vocalists of NSYNC, one of the most successful boy bands of all time. The group’s albums, including the record-breaking “No Strings Attached,” set the stage for Timberlake’s solo career.

Since stepping out on his own with 2002’s “Justified,” Timberlake has consistently pushed the boundaries of pop music. Albums like “FutureSex/ LoveSounds” and “The 20/20 Experience” have not only topped charts but have also influenced the direction of contemporary R&B and pop. His singles, including “SexyBack,” “Cry Me a River,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!,” have become cultural touchstones, earning him numerous accolades including ten Grammy Awards.

Beyond music, Timberlake has made significant inroads in acting, with acclaimed performances in films such as “The Social Network,” “Inside Llewyn Davis,” and more recently, “Palmer” and

Marca MP Brings “Simplemente Marca Tour” to Houston’s Arena Theatre

Regional Mexican sensation Marca MP is set to electrify Houston fans as they bring their “Simplemente Marca Tour” to The Arena Theatre on November 16th. This performance marks another milestone in the meteoric rise of a band that has quickly become one of the most exciting acts in the genre.

From humble beginnings playing quinceañeras and flea markets in 2018 to selling out arenas in 2023, Marca MP’s journey is a testament to their unique sound and universal appeal. The California-based group, whose music blends elements of banda, mariachi, and ranchera, has captured the hearts of listeners across generations with their emotive lyrics and catchy melodies.

Pedro Vargas, known to fans as “El Chato,” is the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of Marca MP. Growing up in Northern California, Vargas was steeped in the classics of Regional Mexican music. “My parents listened to Los Tigres del Norte, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Los Temerarios and Los Bukis,” Vargas recalls. “The themes and melodies of those songs became the foundation of the music I write and perform today.”

The band’s breakthrough came with their 2019 single “El Güero,” a upbeat corrido with defiant lyrics and a nostalgic melody. The song’s popularity exploded

when Marca MP re-recorded it as a duet with Grupo Firme. “I remember the morning the track was published we had 8,000 followers on social media,” says Vargas. “When I got home later that night, we had reached 20,000. It was a very happy moment, the beginning of something big.”

Indeed, “El Güero” became the most-watched online video in Mexico that year, catapulting Marca MP into the spotlight. Since then, the band has been incredibly prolific, independently releasing five digital-only live albums, the critically acclaimed Flores EP, and fulllength studio albums including No Me Quejo, Brindo, and Aunque Digan.

The current lineup of Marca MP features Vargas on lead vocals, Esteban Salcedo on tuba, and guitarists Diógenes Bojórquez and Julio Torres. This quartet has continued to push the boundaries of Regional Mexican music, collaborating with artists across genres. Their 2022 single “Ya Acabo,” featuring global pop star Becky G, has amassed over 137 million views on YouTube.

Fans attending the November 16th show at The Arena Theatre can expect to hear a mix of Marca MP’s greatest hits and new material from their latest album, LEALTAD. Released in early 2024, LEALTAD showcases the band’s growth and Vargas’s songwriting prowess, with the frontman penning seven of the

album’s ten tracks.

“We’re excited to bring the ‘Simplemente Marca Tour’ to Houston,” Vargas says. “The Arena Theatre is a fantastic venue, and we can’t wait to connect with our fans there. We’ve put together a show that celebrates our journey so far while also giving a taste of where we’re headed musically.”

The “Simplemente Marca Tour” follows on the heels of the band’s successful “Lo Que Fuera un Sueño Tour,” which concluded in December 2022 with a sold-out show at the Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) in Los Angeles. This Houston stop is part of a broader tour that will see Marca MP performing across Mexico and the United States throughout 2024.

For longtime fans and newcomers alike, the November 16th concert promises to be a showcase of Marca MP’s signature sound – a blend of traditional Regional Mexican styles with contemporary influences. Attendees can expect to hear fan favorites like “El Güero” alongside tracks from LEALTAD, all delivered with the energy and passion that have become Marca MP’s hallmarks.

As Marca MP continues to rise in popularity, their music remains grounded in the traditions that inspired them. “Our goal has always been to create music that connects with people,” Vargas explains. “Whether it’s a song about love, life struggles, or just having a good time, we want our audience to feel something real.”

The band’s rapid ascent in the Regional Mexican music scene is a testament to their hard work, talent, and the universal appeal of their music. From playing for tips in a cardboard box at flea markets to headlining major venues, Marca MP’s journey is an inspiring story of perseverance and passion.

Tickets for Marca MP’s “Simplemente Marca Tour” at The Arena Theatre on November 16th are expected to sell quickly. Fans are encouraged to secure their spots early for what promises to be an unforgettable night of music, emotion, and celebration.

As Marca MP prepares to take the stage in Houston, one thing is clear: this is a band at the height of their powers, ready to deliver a performance that will resonate with fans long after the final note fades. For anyone who loves Regional Mexican music – or simply appreciates authentic, heartfelt performances – this is a show not to be missed.

Donavon Frankenreiter to Perform at Dosey Doe Big Barn

Donavon Frankenreiter, the acclaimed surf rock musician and professional surfer, is set to bring his unique blend of laid-back melodies and soulful lyrics to The Woodlands, Texas. On November 22nd, Frankenreiter will take the stage at the Dosey Doe Big Barn, promising an unforgettable night of music that spans his two-decade career.

Frankenreiter’s journey to the Dosey Doe stage is as intriguing as his music. Born on December 10, 1972, in Downey, California, he first made waves in the professional surfing world. At just 14 years old, Frankenreiter’s talent on a surfboard earned him a sponsorship with Billabong, propelling him to move to Hawaii and pursue his passion.

It was in Hawaii that Frankenreiter’s life took an unexpected

turn. He rented a home from the parents of Jack Johnson, another surfer with a hidden musical talent. The two became fast friends, learning guitar together between surf sessions. This friendship would later play a crucial role in Frankenreiter’s music career.

While surfing remained his primary focus, Frankenreiter began exploring his musical talents in his late teens. At 18, he joined a group called Peanut Butter and Jam, marking his first foray into the world of performance. Later, in 1996, he formed the band Sunchild, where he served as the lead guitarist but didn’t yet take on vocal duties. Sunchild’s sound was reminiscent of 70s rock, drawing comparisons to bands like The Black Crowes.

With Sunchild, Frankenreiter released two albums. Their debut, “Barefoot & Live,” hit the shelves in 1997 on Surfdog Records. Produced by

Gary Hoey, this live album showcased the band’s versatility with covers of The Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Rolling Stones, and Van Morrison, interspersed with original compositions. In 2000, they followed up with “California Honey,” a studio album released on their own Sunchild Records label. However, this second album is now out of print, making it a coveted item for collectors and dedicated fans.

It wasn’t until 2002 that Frankenreiter decided to pursue music as a solo artist. By this time, his old friend Jack Johnson had already made significant waves in the music industry and was launching his own label, Brushfire Records. Frankenreiter reached out to Johnson, leading to a pivotal moment in his career.

In 2004, Frankenreiter released his

self-titled debut album on Brushfire Records. The album was co-produced by Jack Johnson and Mario Caldato Jr., known for his work with the Beastie Boys. This debut featured an impressive lineup of collaborators, including Johnson himself, G. Love, and Koool G Murder of the Eels. The album’s release was strategically timed, hitting Australian shelves first in April 2004, capitalizing on Frankenreiter’s high profile in the country from his surfing career and support gigs for Jack Johnson.

The success of his debut album in Australia led to a tour of the country in April 2004, with Gary Jules as his support act. This exposure helped the album break into the top forty of the ARIA albums chart, marking Frankenreiter’s first significant commercial success. The album was released in the United States a month later, on May 11, 2004, further expanding his fanbase.

As Frankenreiter’s music career gained momentum, he continued to evolve as an artist. In 2006, he made a significant move by leaving Brushfire Records and signing with Lost Highway Records, home to notable artists such as Elvis Costello, Ryan Adams, and Willie Nelson. This change in labels coincided with the release of his sophomore album, “Move by Yourself,” on June 6, 2006.

The years that followed saw Frankenreiter exploring different facets of his musicality. In 2007, he released “Recycled Recipes,” an EP featuring cover songs that showcased his versatility as a performer. This was followed by the polished full-length album “Pass It Around” in 2008, further cementing his place in the surf rock genre.

A significant shift in Frankenreiter’s sound came with his relocation to Kauai. This move inspired him to incorporate more Hawaiian instruments into his music, including slack key guitar, lap steel, and ukulele. These instruments featured prominently in his 2010 album “Revisited,” which was essentially a reinterpreted version of his 2004 debut, infused with a tropical island feel.

The year 2010 proved to be particularly productive for Frankenreiter. In addition to “Revisited,” he released a second volume of the “Recycled Recipes” series and his fourth album of original material, “Glow.” This period also marked another significant change in his career as he parted ways with Lost Highway Records and formed his own label, Liquid Tambourine Records.

Frankenreiter’s music is characterized by its laid-back vibe, introspective lyrics, and skillful guitar work. His sound often evokes images of sunsoaked beaches and endless summers, resonating with fans who appreciate his authentic approach to surf rock. His live performances are known for their relaxed atmosphere and engaging energy, often feeling more like intimate gatherings than formal concerts.

The upcoming performance at Dosey Doe Big Barn is particularly exciting for fans in The Woodlands area. The venue, known for its unique atmosphere and exceptional acoustics, provides the perfect setting for Frankenreiter’s soulful tunes. Housed in a 165-year-old barn, Dosey Doe offers a concert experience that aligns well with Frankenreiter’s down-to-earth personality and musical style.

Attendees of the November 22nd show can expect a journey through Frankenreiter’s extensive catalog. From his early hits to tracks from his more recent albums, the setlist is likely to

showcase the evolution of his sound over the years. Given his penchant for collaboration, there’s always the possibility of surprise guest appearances or unique renditions of his songs.

This concert is more than just another tour stop for Frankenreiter; it’s a testament to his enduring appeal as an artist who has successfully bridged the worlds of professional surfing and music. His journey from the beaches of Hawaii to stages across the world serves as an inspiration to many, proving that it’s possible to turn multiple passions into a successful career.

As the date approaches, excitement is building among local music fans and surf enthusiasts alike. The opportunity to see Donavon Frankenreiter perform in such an intimate setting is not one that comes along often, making this a mustsee event for anyone in The Woodlands area.

Tickets for the November 22nd show at Dosey Doe Big Barn are expected to sell quickly. Fans are encouraged to secure their spots early to avoid missing out on what promises to be a memorable night of music from one of surf rock’s most beloved figures. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to Frankenreiter’s music, this concert offers a chance to experience the unique blend of surf culture and soulful rock that has defined his career for over two decades.

Glam Metal Legends Pretty Boy Floyd to Rock Houston’s BFE Rock Club

Formed in Hollywood, California, in 1987, Pretty Boy Floyd emerged as one of the last great acts of the glam and pop-metal scene that dominated the Sunset Strip. Named after the notorious Depression-era bank robber Charles Arthur Floyd, the band quickly made a name for themselves with their highenergy performances and catchy anthems.

Pretty Boy Floyd’s 1989 debut album, “Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz,” remains a cult classic of the genre. The record, which cracked the Billboard 200, spawned two hit singles that became MTV staples: “Rock and Roll (Is Gonna Set the Night on Fire)” and “I Wanna Be with You.” These tracks showcased the band’s knack for combining arena-ready choruses with the swaggering attitude that defined the era.

Like many of their contemporaries, Pretty Boy Floyd faced challenges as the musical landscape shifted in the early

90s. The rise of grunge and alternative rock led to a brief hiatus for the band. However, true to the resilient spirit of rock and roll, Pretty Boy Floyd refused to fade away. They regrouped in the late 90s and have continued to release new material and tour, much to the delight of their dedicated fanbase.

The current lineup features original members Steve Summers on vocals and Kristy Majors on guitar, supported by JK Famous on bass and Nick “Tricky” Lane on drums. This combination of founding members and fresh talent ensures that Pretty Boy Floyd delivers both nostalgia and renewed energy in their live performances.

Concertgoers can expect to hear all the classics from “Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz,” as well as tracks from their more recent releases. The band’s 2017 album “Public Enemies,” described by Majors as the true follow-up to their debut, showcases their ability to stay true to their roots while evolving their sound for modern audiences.

The BFE Rock Club, known for hosting both up-and-coming acts and established names in rock, provides an intimate setting for fans to experience Pretty Boy Floyd’s larger-than-life stage presence. Legendary Producer and Musician T-Bone Burnett Set to Grace The Heights Theater Stage

Music aficionados and fans of authentic Americana are in for a treat as the iconic T Bone Burnett is scheduled to perform at The Heights Theater on November 16th. This rare live appearance promises to be an unforgettable evening, showcasing Burnett’s multifaceted career that spans over five decades in the music industry.

Joseph Henry Burnett, known professionally as T Bone Burnett, has been a pivotal figure in American music since the mid-1960s. Born on January 14, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri, Burnett grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, where he absorbed a rich blend of blues, R&B, and Tex-Mex sounds. These early influences would shape his musical journey and contribute to his unique sound as both a performer and producer.

Burnett’s professional music career began in the mid-1960s when he was a member of the folk-rock band, the Loose Ends. The group released two singles in 1966 and 1967, distributed nationally by

Bell Records. Although these early efforts didn’t chart, they set the stage for Burnett’s future in the music industry. Instead of pursuing a college education, Burnett chose to immerse himself in music, opening his own recording studio in Fort Worth where he worked with various artists, including the Legendary Stardust Cowboy.

A significant turning point in Burnett’s career came in 1975 when Bob Dylan invited him to play guitar on the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. This experience not only exposed Burnett to a wider audience but also connected him with other talented musicians of the era. Following the tour, Burnett, along with David Mansfield and Steven Soles, formed the Alpha Band, releasing three albums between 1977 and 1978 before disbanding.

Burnett’s solo career began to gain critical acclaim with the release of “Truth Decay” in 1980. This album, along with 1983’s “Proof Through the Night,” established him as a thoughtful and witty songwriter with a unique perspective on modern life’s moral dilemmas. Despite the

critical acclaim, commercial success as a solo artist remained elusive, pushing Burnett to expand his focus to production work.

It was as a producer that Burnett truly found his commercial stride. His production credits read like a who’s who of popular music, including work with artists such as Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, Los Lobos, and more recently, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Burnett’s production style is characterized by its warm, dynamic sound and imaginative arrangements that serve both the song and the artist’s vision.

Burnett’s work on the soundtrack for the Coen Brothers’ film “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” in 2000 marked a turning point in his career. The soundtrack became a cultural phenomenon, selling close to nine million copies and earning Burnett four Grammy Awards. This success catapulted him into the upper echelons of music producers and opened doors for more highprofile projects.

T-Bone Burnett

(continued from previous page)

His influence extended beyond the recording studio and into film and television. Burnett has coordinated music for numerous productions, including “The Hunger Games” (2012) and the TV series “Nashville,” created and produced by his wife, Callie Khouri. His work in this field has garnered him both Oscar and Grammy recognition, cementing his status as a cross-media musical powerhouse.

Burnett’s upcoming performance at The Heights Theater is particularly significant as it comes in the wake of his latest album, “The Other Side,” released in 2024. This album represents a departure from his previous electronic-focused “Invisible Light” series, returning to a more organic, roots-oriented sound that Burnett describes as “country blues.”

“The Other Side” showcases Burnett’s renewed approach to songwriting and vocal performance. The album features collaborations with artists like Rosanne Cash, Lucius, and Weyes Blood, creating a rich tapestry of sound that both honors Burnett’s roots and pushes his artistry forward. In creating this album, Burnett found himself reflecting on the use of the word “you” in popular music. He realized that in his previous work, he had often been “tough” on listeners, constantly appealing to their consciences. With “The Other Side,” Burnett sought to be more inclusive and kind, both to his audience and to himself as an artist.

The result is a collection of songs that are at once haunting and playful, melancholic and warm. Tracks like “He Came Down,” inspired by his wife Callie Khouri, and the spectral “Waiting For You” showcase Burnett’s evolving songwriting style and his newly melodic vocal approach. Fans attending the show at The Heights Theater may be treated to live renditions of these new songs, as well as selections from Burnett’s extensive back catalog.

The concert at The Heights Theater is particularly noteworthy as it’s part of a limited “tour” consisting of only three performances. This exclusivity adds to the anticipation surrounding the event, giving Houston-area music lovers a rare opportunity to experience Burnett’s artistry in an intimate setting. The Heights Theater, known for its excellent acoustics and

historic charm, provides an ideal backdrop for Burnett’s nuanced musical style. The venue’s character aligns well with Burnett’s rootsy, Americana-tinged sound, promising an immersive experience for concert-goers.

As Burnett approaches his 76th birthday, this concert serves as a testament to his enduring creativity and relevance in the music world. His recent shift in songwriting focus, moving away from the dystopian themes of his “Invisible Light” series towards a more introspective and melodic approach, adds an extra layer of interest to this performance. For aspiring musicians and producers in the audience, the concert offers a masterclass in musical storytelling and arrangement. Burnett’s ability to craft rich, textured soundscapes while maintaining the emotional core of a song is unparalleled, and seeing this translated to a live setting is sure to be inspiring.

The T Bone Burnett concert at The Heights Theater is more than just a musical performance; it’s a cultural event for the city of Houston. Burnett’s influence spans generations and genres, making this concert appealing to a wide range of music lovers. From fans of traditional Americana and blues to those who appreciate the craft of songwriting and production, this show has something for everyone.

As Burnett continues to evolve as an artist, this concert offers a glimpse into what the future might hold. Will he continue to explore the more melodic, introspective style of “The Other Side,” or will he surprise audiences with yet another reinvention of his sound? The performance at The Heights Theater may provide clues to Burnett’s future musical direction.

For those lucky enough to secure tickets, the November 16th show at The Heights Theater promises to be more than just a stop on a tour; it’s a rare chance to witness the continuing evolution of an artist who has been at the forefront of American music for over half a century. Whether you’re a long-time fan of Burnett’s work or a newcomer curious about his significant influence on modern music, this concert is set to be a memorable event in Houston’s musical calendar.

Tickets for T Bone Burnett’s performance at The Heights Theater are expected to be in high demand. This album served as the soundtrack to a documentary film about the band’s origin story, focusing on their first recording session at The Sonic Ranch studio in 2014. This release gave fans an intimate look at the band’s formative moments and musical evolution.

July 16, 2021, saw the release of Midland’s EP “The Last Resort,” which made its mark by reaching Number 47 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart. Most recently, Midland has gifted fans with their fourth studio album, “Barely Blue,” released on September 20, 2024. The collaboration with Cobb, known for his work with artists like Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell, hints at a potentially more rootsy, organic sound for the band.

Beyond their musical endeavors, Midland has also ventured into the world of spirits. In February 2020, they launched their own tequila brand, “insõlito,” with three expressions, showcasing their entrepreneurial spirit

and connection to their Southwestern roots.

Prolific Australian Rock Innovators King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Set to Transform White Oak Music Hall with GenreDefying Performance

In what promises to be one of the most ambitious concert events of the year, Australian psychedelic rock phenomenon King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will take the stage at White Oak Music Hall on November 16, bringing with them an arsenal of material from their remarkably extensive catalog, including their latest releases “The Silver Cord” and “Flight b741.”

The Melbourne-based band, now arguably Australia’s most innovative and productive rock outfit, arrives in Houston at the peak of their creative powers, having released an astounding 26 studio albums since their formation in 2011. Their recent output has been particularly noteworthy, with “Flight b741,” released in August 2024, marking yet another bold directional shift in their everevolving sound. The band’s prolific

nature has become legendary in the industry, with 13 of their albums charting in the Top 20 in their native Australia, cementing their position as one of the most important rock bands of their generation.

“Flight b741,” the band’s first release on their newly formed P(doom) Records label, represents a surprising turn for a group known for their experimental tendencies. The album, which has already earned a nomination for Best Rock Album at the 2024 ARIA Music Awards, sees the band embracing a more straightforward classic rock approach, incorporating elements of blues rock and boogie reminiscent of their 2019 album “Fishing for Fishies.” The creation of their own label, named after the concept of P(doom) in artificial intelligence, marks another milestone in their independent artistic journey.

Lead vocalist Stu Mackenzie describes the album as their most collaborative effort to date: “This is our most collaborative record – the collaboration was occurring in the room, it was free, and everyone was bringing in songs and ideas.” The album features multiple lead vocalists, with band members trading the microphone in what Mackenzie calls a “pass the mic” approach, creating their most democratically creative work yet. “We’re having a lot of fun, but we’re often singing about some pretty heavy shit,” Mackenzie adds, “and probably hitting on some deeper, more universal themes than usual. It’s not a sci-fi record, it’s about life and stuff. But the record is like a really fun weekend with your mates, you know? Like, proper fun.”

The current tour offers something unique for fans who can’t attend in person – each show is being livestreamed on YouTube, a project that Mackenzie had contemplated for years. The streams, handled by documentary filmmakers Jackson Devereux and Allen Dobbins, capture the performances in real time, with the sound mix coming directly from longtime King Gizzard audio engineer Sam Joseph’s live board mix. This DIY approach to livestreaming is characteristic of the band’s ethos. “I think a lot of people would look at this operation and be like, ‘You guys are absolutely insane,’” Mackenzie admits. “That is not what you’re supposed to do. So many things could go wrong at any moment, but I think making it free allows you to have a few teething problems along the way, and figure it out in good faith.”

The current lineup – Stu Mackenzie (vocals/guitar), Ambrose Kenny-Smith (harmonica/vocals/ keyboards), Cook Craig (guitar/vocals), Joey Walker (guitar/vocals), Lucas Harwood (bass), and Michael Cavanagh (drums) – has evolved into one of rock’s most versatile and ambitious units. Their recent achievements include selling out multiple nights in major cities and headlining prestigious venues like the Hollywood Bowl, demonstrating their growing status in the international music scene.

The band’s musical journey has been marked by constant evolution and experimentation. Their discography reads like a creative exploration of rock’s

outer boundaries, from the garage rock roots of their early EPs to the infinitely looping “Nonagon Infinity” (2016), from the microtonal explorations of “Flying Microtonal Banana” (2017) to the synthesizer-driven “The Silver Cord” (2023). Each release has pushed new boundaries while maintaining the band’s distinctive creative spirit, earning them a fervent worldwide fanbase who share endless memes, mixes, videos, graphics, theories and discussions, all through which they explore and expand what they have termed ‘The Gizzverse.’

The band’s versatility is particularly evident in their recent releases. “The Silver Cord,” released in October 2023, saw them crafting an all-electronic album inspired by the purchase of a Simmons drum kit, incorporating influences ranging from early Donna Summer to Technotronic. This was followed by the stark contrast of “Flight b741,” which returned to a more traditional rock format while maintaining the band’s innovative spirit.

The White Oak Music Hall show promises to be a marathon session of musical exploration. Known for their high-energy performances and ability to seamlessly blend different styles and periods of their catalog, the band is likely to draw from across their vast discography, including recent material from both “The Silver Cord” and “Flight b741.” Their ability to move effortlessly

between styles – from the death metal intensity of “Infest the Rats’ Nest” to the gentle psychedelia of “Butterfly 3000” –ensures that no two performances are quite alike.

The contrast between these latest releases – the all-electronic experimentation of “The Silver Cord” and the classic rock-inspired “Flight b741” – demonstrates the band’s remarkable versatility and suggests that audiences can expect an evening of dramatic musical shifts and surprises. Their current setlists have been featuring extended jams and

unexpected transitions between songs from throughout their career, creating a unique and immersive live experience that showcases both their technical prowess and their improvisational skills.

For Houston music fans, this performance represents a rare opportunity to witness one of contemporary rock’s most innovative and prolific bands at the height of their powers. Their combination of technical precision, improvisational skill, and boundless creativity has earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting live acts in modern rock. The November 16 appearance at White Oak Music Hall stands as one of the most anticipated concert events of the season, promising an unforgettable night of psychedelic rock innovation that spans genres and defies expectations.

Given the band’s growing popularity and their recent streak of sold-out shows, early ticket purchase is strongly recommended. This performance promises to be more than just a concert –it’s an opportunity to witness a pivotal moment in the evolution of one of rock’s most ambitious and adventurous bands.

Local Natives Brings Historic Double Album Tour to Houston’s White Oak Music Hall During Pivotal Moment in Band’s Evolution

In what promises to be one of Houston’s most significant indie rock events of the year, Los Angeles-based band Local Natives will bring their “Time Will Wait For No One But I’ll Wait For You Tour” to White Oak Music Hall on November 8. The tour, named after the band’s two most recent albums, represents not just a celebration of new music but a pivotal moment in the group’s 15-year journey, as they navigate both their most ambitious creative period and a forthcoming transition in their lineup.

The story behind the tour’s unique name reflects one of the most remarkable creative periods in recent indie rock

history. During what the band describes as a “time of metamorphosis,” Local Natives embarked on their most prolific songwriting period, resulting in two complete albums released within nine months of each other. The first, “Time Will Wait for No One” (July 2023), and its companion piece, “But I’ll Wait for You” (April 2024), emerged from a period of unprecedented challenges and creative renewal for the band.

The genesis of these albums traces back to a pivotal moment on August 14, 2021, when Local Natives performed at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. It was their first live performance in almost two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and what they would later describe as “one of the most emotional concerts of

our lives.” The show came at a time when band members were individually grappling with profound personal changes – confronting parenthood, dealing with isolation, processing loss, and facing identity crises.

Working with an all-star production team of John Congleton, Michael Harris, and Danny Reisch, the band channeled these experiences into their most ambitious work to date. The sessions yielded not just one album but a complete two-album narrative that the band describes as “a large body of music.” The first release, “Time Will Wait for No One,” introduced audiences to this new chapter with singles like

“Desert Snow,” “Hourglass,” and “NYE,” showcasing the band’s evolution toward a more soul-influenced sound while maintaining their signature harmonic complexity.

The companion album, “But I’ll Wait for You,” released in April 2024, completes the musical journey. As the band explains, it serves as “maybe not an answer to a question, but an exhale to an inhale.” The album, preceded by singles “April” and “Alpharetta,” demonstrates the band’s continued artistic growth while maintaining a thematic and sonic connection to its predecessor.

The current tour takes on additional historical significance with the recent announcement of founding member Kelcey Ayer’s departure from the band. Ayer, whose multi-instrumental talents and distinctive vocals have been integral to Local Natives’ sound since their formation, announced his exit ten days after the release of “But I’ll Wait for You.” While the split is described as amicable, with Ayer completing the current tour, it marks the end of an era for a band that has been at the forefront of indie rock for over a decade.

Local Natives’ journey began in the halls of an Orange County high school, where guitarist Ryan Hahn, singer/guitarist Taylor Rice, and keyboardist Kelcey Ayer first started making music together. After adding drummer Matt Frazier and relocating to Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood, the band quickly established themselves with their 2009 debut “Gorilla Manor,” which earned widespread critical acclaim

for its innovative blend of post-punk energy and folk-influenced harmonies.

The subsequent years saw the band consistently evolving their sound across a series of successful albums. “Hummingbird” (2013) showcased a darker, more atmospheric approach, while “Sunlit Youth” (2016) incorporated electronic elements and reached number eight on the Billboard rock albums chart. “Violet Street” (2019) found the band exploring a nuanced, ’70s adult contemporary vibe, setting the stage for their current creative period.

Throughout their career, Local Natives have built a reputation for exceptional live performances. Their appearances span prestigious festivals like Coachella and Austin City Limits, and they’ve delivered memorable performances on major television shows including Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and The Late Show With David Letterman. The band’s live shows are celebrated for their ability to translate complex studio arrangements into powerful, immediate experiences.

Current members Taylor Rice, Ryan Hahn, Matt Frazier, and Nik Ewing, alongside Ayer, have consistently pushed the boundaries of their live performances. The band’s evolution from their early days of kinetic tribal rhythms to their current sophisticated blend of atmospheric indie rock and soul influences is perhaps best appreciated in their concert settings.

The November 8 show at White

Oak Music Hall promises to be particularly significant for several reasons. First, it offers Houston audiences the rare opportunity to hear material from both new albums performed live, showcasing the complete artistic vision behind this ambitious two-album project. Second, as one of the final performances featuring Ayer, it represents a chance to witness the end of an era for the band’s original lineup.

White Oak Music Hall, known for its superior acoustics and intimate atmosphere despite its size, provides an ideal setting for Local Natives’ layered sound. The venue’s reputation for hosting historically significant performances adds another layer of importance to what is already a momentous show.

For Houston music enthusiasts, this concert represents more than just another tour stop. It’s an opportunity to witness a band at a crucial juncture in their career, performing some of their most ambitious material while bidding farewell to a founding member. The combination of new material from both albums, the band’s stellar live reputation, and the historical significance of these shows makes the November 8 performance an essential event for both longtime fans and newcomers to Local Natives’ music.

The band’s journey from high school friends to indie rock innovators, through personal challenges and creative triumphs, adds weight to every performance on this tour. Their ability to emerge from a period of uncertainty with their most ambitious work to date speaks to their resilience and creative vision.

Tickets for Local Natives at White Oak Music Hall are currently available. Given the band’s history of sold-out performances and the special nature of this tour, early ticket purchase is strongly recommended. This concert promises not just a night of exceptional music, but a chance to be part of a significant moment in Local Natives’ continuing story.

The November 8 performance stands as both a celebration of the band’s recent creative renaissance and a farewell to one of its founding members, making it one of the most anticipated indie rock events of the season in Houston. For music lovers, it’s an opportunity to witness a pivotal moment in the evolution of one of indie rock’s most consistent and innovative bands.

Intergalactic Shock Rockers GWAR Set to Unleash Chaos at Warehouse Live Midtown

In a cosmic convergence of metal, mayhem, and mock bloodshed, the notorious shock rock band GWAR is set to descend upon Houston’s Warehouse Live Midtown on November 17th. This eagerly anticipated performance is part of their fall 2024 US tour, aptly named “The Stoned Age,” supporting their latest album, “The New Dark Ages.” As the Scumdogs of the Universe prepare to invade the Bayou City, fans and the uninitiated alike are bracing for an evening of unparalleled spectacle and auditory assault.

GWAR, known for their outlandish costumes, grotesque satire, and bloodsoaked theatrics, promises an unforgettable night that will challenge everything fans thought they knew about live performances. The band’s leader, Blóthar the Berserker, declared in the tour announcement, “Get ready to mumble!!! On this tour we will CHRONIC-le the embarrassing loser-takes-all choice between a neurodivergent fascist and a desiccated mummy to be the leader of the free world. What could possibly go wrong?” This

statement, dripping with GWAR’s signature twisted humor, hints at the political satire and social commentary that fans can expect, all delivered with face-melting sound and over-the-top spectacle.

GWAR’s performances are legendary for their elaborate stage shows, which often include fake pagan rituals and copious amounts of washable bodily fluids sprayed on the willing audience. Concertgoers should be prepared for a multi-sensory assault that goes far beyond typical concert experiences. The band’s complex mythology, which casts them as all-powerful interplanetary warriors bent on enslaving and slaughtering the human race, provides a rich backdrop for their onstage antics. Each band member performs under an alias, with the current lineup featuring Blóthar the Berserker (vocals), Balsac the Jaws of Death (guitar), Pustulus Maximus (guitar), Beefcake the Mighty (bass), and Jizmak Da Gusha (drums).

Founded in Richmond, Virginia, in 1984, GWAR has spent nearly four decades pushing the boundaries of music, perfor-

mance art, and good taste. What began as a collaboration between art students and musicians quickly evolved into one of the most unique and controversial acts in the history of rock music. GWAR’s early performances in small clubs and art spaces were characterized by their DIY ethos, with band members crafting their own elaborate costumes and props. This handson approach to their craft has remained a hallmark of the band’s aesthetic, even as their productions have grown more sophisticated over the years.

GWAR’s musical style has evolved significantly since their early days. Initially rooted in punk and hardcore, the band’s sound has expanded to incorporate elements of thrash metal, heavy metal, and even occasional forays into more experimental territories. Their Houston show is expected to draw from their extensive catalog, including fan favorites from albums like “Scumdogs of the Universe,” “Violence Has Arrived,” and “Lust in Space,” as well as material from “The New Dark Ages.” This musical journey through

GWAR

(continued from previous page)

GWAR’s career promises to be as diverse as it is intense, showcasing the band’s growth while maintaining their core identity.

Despite numerous lineup changes over the years, GWAR has maintained a consistent identity and loyal fanbase. The band has survived controversy, legal challenges, and even the loss of founding member and longtime frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) in 2014. Brockie’s death was a significant blow to the GWAR community, but the band’s decision to continue was a testament to the enduring power of their artistic vision. Today, with original bassist Michael Bishop leading the charge as Blóthar the Berserker, GWAR continues to evolve while staying true to their shock rock roots.

GWAR’s influence extends far beyond the realm of music. The band has made forays into comics, with their own series of graphic novels that expand on their outrageous mythology. They’ve also appeared in films and television shows, including a memorable performance on the Jerry Springer Show that ended in typical GWAR fashion – with the set drenched in fake blood. The band’s merchandise line is equally expansive, offering everything from t-shirts to action figures, allowing fans to bring a piece of the GWAR universe into their everyday lives.

Attendees of the Warehouse Live Midtown show should brace themselves for an all-out assault on the senses. The elaborate costumes, made of latex and papier-mâché, are works of art in their own right, often featuring intricate details and movable parts. GWAR’s stage show is a masterclass in controlled chaos, featuring the band’s unique brand of satire and social commentary delivered through a filter of science fiction and horror. Possible appearances by auxiliary characters like Techno-Destructo, Sleazy P. Martini, or even the mechanical giant maggot add an element of unpredictability to each performance.

The setlist for the Houston show is expected to span GWAR’s extensive discography, with a focus on their latest album. Fans can anticipate hearing classics like “Sick of You” and “Saddam a Go-Go” alongside newer tracks from “The New Dark Ages.” And of course, no GWAR show would be complete without the potential to leave the venue soaked in (fake) bodily fluids – a badge of honor for

any true fan.

While GWAR alone would be enough to make this a must-see event, the “Stoned Age” tour also features an impressive lineup of supporting acts. Swedish black metal legends Dark Funeral will bring their relentless assault to the stage, creating a stark contrast to GWAR’s theatrical approach. Known for their uncompromising sound and controversial imagery, Dark Funeral’s presence on the bill adds an extra layer of intensity to the evening. The bill is rounded out by Squid Pisser and Cancer Bats, ensuring a diverse night of heavy music that spans multiple subgenres and styles.

This tour brings together an extraordinary variety of metal, drawing fans from every corner of the genre. The combination of GWAR’s over-the-top theatrics and Dark Funeral’s intense black metal creates a sensory overload that promises to be unlike anything else in live music. For long-time metal fans, this pairing represents a unique opportunity to see two iconic acts share the same stage. For newcomers, it’s a chance to experience the full spectrum of what heavy music has to offer, from the tonguein-cheek satire of GWAR to the deadly serious intensity of Dark Funeral.

The choice of Warehouse Live Midtown as the venue for this Houston show is particularly fitting. Known for its industrial aesthetic and powerful sound system, the venue provides the perfect backdrop for GWAR’s apocalyptic visions. The open floor plan ensures that fans will have plenty of room to move and react to the mayhem unfolding on stage. For those who prefer a slightly less intense experience, the venue’s balcony area offers a bird’s-eye view of the proceedings.

Whether you’re a longtime GWAR devotee, a black metal aficionado, or simply curious about one of rock’s most unique acts, the November 17th show at Warehouse Live Midtown is shaping up to be a night that will echo in metal history. Just remember to wear clothes you don’t mind getting soaked in fake blood –GWAR shows are notorious for their messy finales, and it’s all part of the experience.

As the tour date approaches, anticipation in Houston’s metal community is reaching a fever pitch. Local fan clubs and metal-friendly venues are organizing pre-show meetups and after-parties, turning the GWAR concert into a full day of metal celebration. Some dedicated fans are even planning to arrive in their own GWARinspired costumes, adding to the carnivallike atmosphere that surrounds these events.

Tickets for this 18+ show are expected to sell quickly. Fans are advised to purchase early to secure their spot at what’s sure to be one of the most talkedabout concerts of the year. VIP packages are available for those who want to take their GWAR experience to the next level, offering perks like early entry, exclusive merchandise, and even the chance to be part of the onstage carnage.

As November 17th approaches, Houston prepares for an invasion like no other. GWAR’s arrival promises to leave an indelible mark on the city’s music scene, providing stories that will be told and retold in metal circles for years to come. Get ready, Houston – the Scumdogs of the Universe are coming, and they’re bringing an interplanetary party like no other. In the words of GWAR themselves, “The blood must flow.” On November 17th at Warehouse Live Midtown, it most certainly will.

American Aquarium Brings Their Anthemic Alt-Country to Warehouse Live Midtown on December 5th

Alt-country fans in Houston are in for a treat as North Carolina-based band American Aquarium is set to perform at Warehouse Live Midtown on December 5th. The show promises to be an electrifying showcase of the band’s latest album, “The Fear of Standing Still,” released earlier this year on July 26th via Losing Side Records/Thirty Tigers.

For nearly two decades, American Aquarium has been pushing the boundaries of rock-and-roll, creating music that’s both revelatory and deeply rooted in American traditions. “The Fear of Standing Still” marks a significant milestone for the band, representing their tenth studio album and second collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Shooter Jennings. The album, which follows their critically acclaimed 2020 release “Lamentations,” sees the band leaning more heavily into their rock influences while maintaining

the introspective lyricism that has become their hallmark.

Frontman BJ Barham, known for his powerful songwriting, describes the new album as a perfect blend of rock anthems and deeply personal narratives. “For us, the sweet spot is when you’ve got a rock band that makes you scream along to every word, and it’s not until you’re coming down at three a.m. that you realize those words are saying something real about your life,” Barham explained. This philosophy is evident throughout “The Fear of Standing Still,” where hard-charging rhythms and explosive riffs serve as the backdrop for nuanced, poetic lyrics.

The current iteration of American Aquarium features a talented ensemble of musicians, including BJ Barham on lead vocals and guitar, Shane Boeker on guitar, Neil Jones on pedal steel guitar, Rhett Huffman on keyboards, Ryan Van Fleet on

drums, and Alden Hedges on bass. This lineup has been described as a “freight train that never lets up,” promising an unforgettable live experience for concert-goers at Warehouse Live.

Recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, “The Fear of Standing Still” showcases American Aquarium’s evolution as a band. The album tackles a range of personal and sociocultural issues, from the complexities of Southern identity to the intersection of generational trauma and reproductive rights. Barham, who celebrated ten years of sobriety during the album’s creation, infuses the songs with a raw honesty that reflects his personal growth and deepening connection with the band’s community of fans.

The lead single, “Crier,” cowritten by Barham and Stephen Wilson Jr., challenges traditional

American Aquarium

(continued from previous page)

notions of masculinity. “I wanted to send the message that it’s not natural to bottle everything up inside, because all of us are meant to feel,” Barham shared, highlighting the band’s commitment to addressing important social issues through their music. The song’s ferocious sound belies its thoughtful message, exemplifying American Aquarium’s knack for crafting music that’s both intellectually engaging and viscerally exciting.

Another standout track, “Southern Roots,” features a guest appearance by Georgia-born singer/ songwriter Katie Pruitt. The song serves as a meditation on pushing against the boundaries of traditional Southern identity. “People can complain all they want about how backwards the South is, but the only way we’ll see any change is to take it upon ourselves,” Barham explained, discussing the song’s themes. This track, like many others on the album, showcases the band’s ability to tackle complex social issues while maintaining their signature sound.

“Babies Having Babies” is

another powerful song from the album, serving as an emphatic prochoice anthem. Barham describes it as “a mix of fiction and personal experience,” addressing the critical issue of reproductive rights at a time when the topic is at the forefront of national discourse. The song’s narrative structure, moving from a nostalgic summer romance to a poignant exploration of personal choice and societal pressure, demonstrates Barham’s growth as a storyteller.

Fans attending the December 5th show at Warehouse Live Midtown can expect a high-energy performance featuring tracks from “The Fear of Standing Still” alongside favorites from the band’s extensive catalog. Barham promises a show that mirrors the intensity of their recorded work: “In our live show the band’s like a freight train that never lets up, and for this record I really wanted to showcase how big and anthemic we can be.”

The concert also offers an opportunity for fans to experience the band’s evolution firsthand. From

their early days playing small clubs to their current status as one of altcountry’s most respected acts, American Aquarium has consistently delivered music that resonates deeply with their audience. Their live shows are known for their raw energy and emotional intensity, with Barham’s powerful vocals and the band’s tight musicianship creating an unforgettable experience.

As American Aquarium continues to push the boundaries of what alt-country can be, their upcoming performance at Warehouse Live Midtown stands as a testament to their enduring appeal and artistic growth. For both long-time fans and newcomers to the band’s music, the December 5th show promises to be a showcase of American Aquarium’s unique blend of rock energy and country storytelling. In a music scene often criticized for its lack of substance, American Aquarium continues to prove that it’s possible to create music that’s both entertaining and meaningful, that rocks hard while saying something important about the world we live in.

Banda MS Brings “Tour Nueva Década” to Smart Financial Centre, Celebrating 20 Years of Musical Excellence

Regional Mexican music powerhouse Banda MS is set to electrify the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land on November 23rd, as part of their highly anticipated “Tour Nueva Década” (New Decade Tour). This performance marks a significant milestone for the band, celebrating two decades of chart-topping success and musical innovation in the vibrant world of banda music.

Hailing from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Banda MS has become a juggernaut in the world of banda music since their formation in 2003. The sixteen-member ensemble, officially known as Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizárraga, was founded by brothers Sergio and Alberto Lizárraga. What started as a group of seven teenagers with a dream has evolved into one of the most influential and successful bands in the genre.

“When we first started, we were just a group of kids with a passion for music and a desire to create something unique,” recalls Sergio Lizárraga, the

band’s founder and tuba player. “We never imagined that 20 years later, we’d be touring internationally and breaking records.”

Banda MS has consistently pushed the boundaries of the genre, blending traditional Sinaloan banda sounds with modern pop influences to create a unique and captivating musical experience. Their sound is characterized by the powerful brass section, punctuated by the distinctive tuba basslines, and complemented by emotive vocals that tell stories of love, life, and the Mexican experience.

Alan Manuel Ramírez Salcido, one of the band’s lead vocalists since 2004, explains their musical philosophy: “We respect the traditions of banda music, but we’re not afraid to experiment. Our goal has always been to create music that resonates with people, whether they’re longtime fans of the genre or newcomers.”

Fans attending the Smart Financial Centre show can expect a high-energy

performance featuring a mix of the band’s greatest hits and newer material. The setlist is likely to include charttoppers like “El Mechón,” the song that catapulted them to international fame, as well as more recent successes such as “Es Tuyo Mi Amor,” “Las Cosas No Se Hacen Así,” and “El Color de tus Ojos.”

Oswaldo Silvas, another key vocalist of the band, hints at what audiences can expect: “We’re planning a show that takes our fans on a journey through our 20-year history. From our earliest hits to our latest releases, and maybe even a few surprises. It’s going to be a night to remember.”

Banda MS’s journey to the top of the Latin music world has been nothing short of remarkable. From their humble beginnings playing local festivals and weddings, they’ve grown to become one of the most successful and influential groups in regional Mexican music. Their accolades include multiple Billboard chart appearances, with an impressive ten singles reaching the Top 10 on

various Billboard charts.

The band’s breakthrough came in 2008 with the album “Escuela de Rancho,” featuring the hit single “El Mechón.” This success marked the beginning of a string of chart-topping albums and singles that would cement Banda MS’s place in the pantheon of regional Mexican music.

The band’s 2017 album “La Mejor Versíon de Mí” showcased their continued dominance in the industry, holding the top position on sales charts and spawning multiple hit singles. This success is a testament to Banda MS’s unique ability to produce consistently popular music, with an unprecedented streak of 15 consecutive songs reaching the number one spot.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support of our fans,” says Alberto Lizárraga, the band’s clarinetist and cofounder. “Breaking records is exciting, but what really matters to us is connecting with our audience through our music.”

As they embark on the “Tour Nueva Década,” Banda MS continues to break parameters and cross borders with their fresh, modern take on banda music. The Smart Financial Centre show promises to be a celebration of the band’s evolution over the past 20 years, showcasing their growth from a group of ambitious teenagers to international superstars.

The band has also embraced digital platforms, recognizing the changing landscape of music consumption. Their music videos on YouTube have garnered millions of views, and they’ve successfully navigated the streaming era, maintaining their relevance in a rapidly evolving industry.

Tejano Legends Intocable Bring 30th Anniversary Tour to Houston’s Arena Theatre, Marking Three Decades of Musical Excellence

In a triumphant return to the city that helped launch them to superstardom, Grammy Award-winning Tejano powerhouse Intocable will bring their spectacular 30th Anniversary Tour to Houston’s Arena Theatre on November 9th. The performance marks another milestone in a journey that began in the small border town of Zapata, Texas, and grew into one of Latin music’s most remarkable success stories.

The upcoming Houston show carries special significance, as it was in

this city where Intocable first demonstrated their massive drawing power, pulling in an astounding crowd of over 65,000 fans to the Houston Astrodome in 1998 – a watershed moment that established them as one of regional Mexican music’s most formidable live acts.

“Houston has always been more than just another stop on our tour,” says frontman Ricky Muñoz, whose masterful accordion work and distinctive vocals have become synonymous with the evolution of modern Tejano music. “This city and its people have been integral to

our story since the beginning. Coming back here for our 30th anniversary feels like coming home.”

The band’s rise to prominence is a testament to their innovative spirit and unwavering dedication to their craft. Formed in the early ’90s by friends Muñoz and René Martínez, Intocable quickly distinguished themselves by crafting a unique sound that bridged traditional norteño music with contemporary influences. Their style – characterized by polka rhythms, accordiondriven melodies, and pop-influenced

arrangements – would eventually set the blueprint for countless Tex-Mex groups that followed.

Current band members Dany Sánchez (bajo sexto, second vocals), Sergio Serna (percussion), Félix Salinas (electric bass), Johnny Lee Rosas (bajo sexto, choruses), and José Juan Hernández (group animation, rhythms) have each contributed to refining and evolving this signature sound over the years. Their cohesive musicianship has helped the group maintain its position at the forefront of Latin music for three decades.

The band’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In 1999, tragedy struck when band members Silvestre Rodríguez and José Ángel Farías, along with road manager José Ángel González, were killed in an auto accident. The devastating loss could have marked the end of Intocable, but instead became a turning point. Their subsequent album “Contigo” paid tribute to their fallen brothers and launched the group to even greater heights, producing hits like “Fuerte No Soy” and “Soñador Eterno” that have become classics of the genre.

Intocable’s influence on Latin music extends far beyond their impressive sales figures and packed arenas. They’ve earned multiple Latin Grammy Awards, including honors for Best Norteño Album and Best Regional Mexican Song, and their innovative approach has inspired a new generation of artists. Their 2005 album “Diez” notably featured collaborations with alternative Latin artists like Kinky, Tego Calderón, and Natalia Lafourcade, demonstrating their ability to transcend genre boundaries while maintaining their distinctive sound.

The group’s commercial success has been equally remarkable. Nine of their albums have peaked at either number one or two on the Latin Albums chart, while ten have topped the Mexican Regional Albums rankings. Between 1999’s “Contigo” and 2016’s “High-

way,” they placed ten albums in the Billboard Top 200 – a remarkable achievement for a regional Mexican act.

At the Arena Theatre performance, fans can expect to hear classics like “Coqueta,” “Sueña,” and “La Mentira” alongside material from their more recent releases. The venue’s intimate inthe-round setting will provide an upclose experience with the legendary group, a rare opportunity given their usual arena and stadium appearances.

“Our sound has evolved over 30 years, but our commitment to quality and connection with our audience remains unchanged,” Muñoz reflects. “Each song tells a story, and these stories have become part of people’s lives. That’s something we never take for granted.”

The band’s influence extends beyond music into humanitarian efforts as well. In 2015, they partnered with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, demonstrating their commitment to giving back to the community. This dedication to both their art and their fans has earned them numerous accolades, including Billboard’s Mexican Regional Group of the Decade award and a Lifetime Achievement honor at the Premio lo Nuestro ceremony.

Their latest works, including 2019’s “Percepción,” show a group that continues to push boundaries while honoring their roots. The album’s lead single “Beso Incompleto” exemplifies their ability to fuse Latin rock elements with their traditional Tejano sound, proving that even after three decades, Intocable continues to evolve and innovate.

The November 9th performance at the Arena Theatre begins at 8:00 PM, with doors opening at 7:00 PM. Given the band’s history of sellout shows in Houston and the intimate nature of the venue, early ticket purchase is strongly recommended. This concert isn’t just a celebration of 30 years of music; it’s a testament to Intocable’s enduring legacy as pioneers of Tejano and Norteño music.

For fans of Latin music, this promises to be more than just another concert – it’s an opportunity to witness living legends who have helped shape the sound of modern Tejano music. As Intocable marks this milestone anniversary, their Houston performance stands as a celebration of their past achievements and a glimpse into the future of a band that continues to define and redefine their genre.

The Biker, The Blues & New York City

The Biker, The Blues & New York City

Famous for its notable blues and jazz clubs the big apple has a number of things going for it, among them of course Broadway, national historical attractions, blues radio and most of all their blues artists. It’s a vibrant setting for blues entertainment. One that as Sinatra sang about “a city that never sleeps”. Even when it comes to dining choices it’s almost beyond imagination. The perfect setting for shall we say one stop shopping. If you travel the highways by motorcycle the fall season throughout all of the state of New York generates a colorful display of leaves that are turning. The photo on the left shares a view of the highway leading up to Emerson Resort & Spa in Mount Tremper New York. The weather can be brisk at sixty miles an hour and of course if it sleets the roads do get slick but then again that is what makes a place like Emerson a nice place to hang your hat. Getting back to New York City if you haven’t experienced the Iridium Club trust me this is one cool place as the entertainment is always and I do mean always over the top. I would highly recommend making reservations because this famous blues and jazz establishment fills up fast every night. Now over in Greenwich Village there is a place well known for its historical residency in the greater New York City area and that’s Terra Blues. The likes of Hubert Sumlin and Johnny Clyde Copeland and many other historical giants as well have laid it down at Terra Blues. Terra Blues has its own effect working, an arched ceiling and the walls are decorated with framed photos of those that have graced their stage. Nationally, blues clubs come in all sizes and are located in all kinds of climates. Just by accessing the Blues Foundation website you can learn about clubs from coast to coast and even some off shore. From the rugged sweltering areas in the state of Arizona to the keys of Florida there is a ride with your name all over it. It’s all about being up on two wheels and being free. When autumn rolls around and you want to hit the road for a tremendous fall journey. You want to get your backside on the highways of New York. When you want to get into some blues

that hits your soul like a ton of bricks New York City is hard to beat. NYC presented top shelf blues talent even back when the blues was just alive in the south and slowly making its way up to New York City. This southern blues sound and lyrics deeply influenced the younger northern men and women of that era. By the way it was the women of the blues that filled the speakeasys back in their day. Imagine that scene - being a woman, a black woman back then and having the blues so deep within you that you couldn’t hold it in. You were busting to let it flow. White men were pouring into these speaks for their bath tub gin, warm beer, a look or two at some scantily clad garter wearing ladies and that is when they really got introduced to the blues. But get this, those men could not find the music they were hearing and that’s when the famous music publisher’s row came onto the scene in regard to blues. The area was known as Tin Pan Alley. The word got out that they would record blues and so this became the place to go and get it done. If you read about Tin Pan Alley and there are plenty of books to read about the names and their stories it will fill you with both understanding and sadness. Not the music being sad but the situation itself being dire. Yet driven like a moth to a flame these early New York City blues pioneers were not deterred, they kept recording their songs. The flame had been lit back then and now today’s NYC’s blues clubs are keeping the scene alive and well. Up until 2018 B.B. King’s was the place where you could anticipate top shelf blues. The late, great Milton Hopkins who had eight years on the bus with B.B. said that if you were a blues musician and you worked with the man you would jump at the opportunity to work with him again. Then when B.B. opened his first club there was a steady line of blues artists that the man knew that were knocking on his door week in and week out. Sadly B.B. is gone an so is his famous New York night club. However the blues lives on and remains vibrant in the big apple because of the real deal blues clubs and the folks that own them. Additionally, wrapped around that scene and enshrining blues artists across the region is the New York Blues Hall of Fame Awards plus more than one Blues Society is resident in across greater New York. These are just two resources that people can gain education and learn of current night club locations. Overall the blues is not some kind of what is known as bubble gum manufactured music for pre-teens and early teens. No, the blues isn’t contrived, it’s real, it originates from a person’s soul. It communicates through both rhythms and lyrics. How could a person listen to Willie Dixon’s “Spoonful” and not get into that vibe? How could you listen to Lydia Pense’s deliver of “Feel So Bad” and not be mesmerized by the woman’s performance but also by the arrangement as well? These two folks are from Chicago and the Bay Area respectively and not New York City but they help make the point. The point being that no matter where you come from nor where you are traveling to there is good blues music and good people around you. New York City has a lot going for it and I have only touched on its resources but I am sharing that if you are a midnight rambler brothers and sisters New York City has got it working big time.
