GRAMMY® Award nominated, multi-platinum-selling band Goo Goo Dolls have announced their brand new thirteenth studio LP Chaos in Bloom, arriving August 12th, 2022 via Warner Records. Marking the first album of their career to be produced by frontman John Rzeznik, the record finds the band at the top of their game and continuing to constantly evolve just as they have for nearly four decades together. Consisting of 10 tracks, Chaos in Bloom is an album of biting sarcasm, stadium-ready choruses, and the type of spear-sharp songwriting that’s led them to becoming one of the most influential alternative rock groups of all time. The record is available for pre-order now HERE. While Chaos in Bloom isn’t necessarily an album borne out by the pandemic, many of the tracks reflect on all of the things in daily life that became amplified while everyone was isolated from one another and sequestered at home. “Chaos in Bloom reminded us how special this whole thing is and to cherish the relationships that we have together,” says Rzeznik about the album. “Where we’ve been, and where we’re going.” Oscillating from personal reflections on the state of the world to societal commentaries, the songs on the album grapple with observations about our dystopian modernity while searching for optimism and pushing for a more empathetic world. “I’ve been trying to have a relationship with the bigger picture,” adds bassist and songwriter Robby Takac, “and refining happiness and what it means from that perspective.”

To record the album, Rzeznik and Takac retreated to Dreamland Studios just outside Woodstock, New York during the pandemic. An environment as remote as it is rich with historic rock music roots, the location proved to be the perfect setting for clearing the noise and creating such a record, which carries a true live quality that the band captured by blending vintage instruments and gear with new-age recording processes and techniques. Alongside the announcement today, the band has shared the first taste continued on next page

of the album “Yeah, I Like You”. As the intro track featured on Chaos in Bloom, the song ignites the record with a rousing acoustic guitar line that hits like a gut punch, with lyrics that effortlessly critique our celebrity culture, and the people who work so hard to look so disaffected while masking insecurities with false self-assuredness. “In a world that is just drowning in social media and internet stars, many of whom are certainly talented, but many confirm that in 2022 you can be famous for doing nothing,” says Rzeznik. “Celebrity in this age has a very quick burn. It was hard not to be consumed by it during the pandemic.” Listen to “Yeah, I Like You” now and watch the brand new official music video now HERE. For the first time since 2019, the band will embark on a sprawling nationwide tour this summer. Set to kick off on July 15, 2022 at Ford Idaho Center Amphitheater in Nampa, ID, the nationwide tour will see the band performing songs from Chaos in Bloom for the first time ever along with other tracks from their complete discography at iconic outdoor venues spanning North America, including Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, and Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY. Blue October will provide support for the entire run, and more information & tickets can be found via the band’s website HERE. Goo Goo Dolls will be partnering with the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation for the tour, a nonprofit founded in 2002 by Ali and Joe Torre to provide healing and education services to youth who have been traumatized by exposure to violence including domestic violence, child abuse, teen dating abuse, and sexual assault to help break the cycle of violence. Formed by Rzeznik and Takac in Buffalo, NY during 1986, Goo Goo Dolls have quietly broken records,

contributed a string of staples to the American songbook, connected to millions of fans, and indelibly impacted popular music for three-plus decades. Beyond selling 15 million records worldwide, the group has garnered four GRAMMY® Award nominations and nearly a dozen platinum & gold singles combined, and seized a page in the history books by achieving 16 number one and Top 10 hits. As a result, they hold the all-time radio record for “Most Top 10 Singles.” Having been covered by everyone from Taylor Swift to Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers, their music continues to reach new audiences around the world and rack up platinum & gold statuses – including the recently doubleplatinum-certified “Name,” platinumcertified “Slide”, “Black Balloon” and “Better Days” and gold-certified “Here Is Gone,” “Sympathy,” “Let Love In,” and “Come To Me.” Thus far, A Boy Named Goo [1995] has gone doubleplatinum, Dizzy Up The Girl five-timesplatinum, and Gutterflower [2002] and Let Love In [2006] both went gold as

Something for the Rest of Us [2010] and Magnetic [2013] bowed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200. Among a string of hits, “Iris” clutched #1 on the Hot 100 for 18 straight weeks and would be named “#1 Top 40 Song of the Last 20 Years.” On the heels of going viral online earlier this year, the track recently achieved an astounding seven-times-platinum status and re-entered the Billboard charts, yet again proving the timelessness of Goo Goo Dolls’ illustrious catalog.

In Support Of His June 24th Album Release For Meet The Moonlight, Jack Johnson Performs At The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion On August 26th Stream “Meet The Moonlight” Here @ https://jackjohnson.lnk.to/MTM Watch The Video Here @ https://youtu.be/msq9Emh3ubw Multi-platinum recording artist Jack Johnson has released a second song and title track to his new album release, Meet The Moonlight, alongside a beautiful new video directed by acclaimed filmmaker Morgan Maassen. The album’s centerpiece, “Meet The Moonlight” presents a quietly hypnotic number that producer Blake Mills refers to as “one of the most spiritually interesting things I’ve ever worked on.” With its sweetly languid rhythms, mantra-like vocal delivery, June 2022 8 Music News • August 2022

and otherworldly guitar work, “Meet The Moonlight” serves as a lovely respite from the outside world as Johnson shares another gentle reminder for living well. The track’s spacious arrangement leaves a lot of room for the mystical. Adding to the track’s inspiration, “Whenever I walk outside at night and look up at the stars, it’s always a way to be present instead of worrying about the future or dwelling on the past,” said Johnson. Mills adds, “There’s a chord in the song that wasn’t part of the initial composition; it happened by mistake when we were first playing it. In the

end we kept it, because what that chord suggested was all the mystery. To me it represents the whole process of us finding a common ground and working together to keep all those little idiosyncrasies tucked into the mix.” Meet The Moonlight, Johnson’s eighth studio album and first full-length release in five years was produced by Blake Mills (acclaimed multi-instrumentalist/producer continued on next page

Jack Johnson continued from previous page known for his work with acts like Alabama Shakes, Perfume Genius, and Jim James), Meet The Moonlight marks a major artistic milestone for Johnson, whose decadesspanning career has included multiple awards and two Grammy nominations, over 25 million album units sold worldwide, and countless sold-out tours (during which he’s emerged as a leading force in greening the global touring industry). In a departure from his past work, most of the album took shape from one-on-one collaboration with Mills (whose contributions included everything from fretless guitar to Moog synth to steel drums), an intimate and highly experimental process that involved embedding Johnson’s elegantly stripped-back arrangements with enchanting sonic details. The album’s lead single, “One Step Ahead” is out now and has moved quickly up the Adult Album Alternative radio charts. The album will be supported by a 35 date tour across North America including two newly announced shows in Hawaii. The latest album from Jack Johnson, Meet The Moonlight opens on a question about the strange complexities of human nature, and never lets up on its heartfelt push for deeper understanding. Over the course of ten captivating and endlessly unpredictable tracks, the multi-platinum-selling singer/ songwriter examines a whole spectrum of existential concerns (the impermanence of life and fragility of human connection, the struggle for community and presence in an ever-fragmenting world), infusing each inquiry with the profound warmth and poetic grace that have always permeated his music. His eighth studio album and first new fulllength in five years, Meet The Moonlight ultimately affirms Johnson as an essential voice in elevating our perspective and subtly guiding us toward a more expansive state of mind. “In some ways good songs are like good science, where they create a chain of thought that just leads to more questions,” says Johnson. “There’s not always that nice clean solution for what to do next if you want a perfect relationship or more peace of mind; sometimes it’s just pointing out everything that gets in the way of that. But hopefully the song ends up making you feel good, and gives you the comfort of knowing that other people are going through the same hardships.” Produced by Blake Mills (an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist/producer

known for his work with acts like Alabama Shakes, Perfume Genius, and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James), Meet The Moonlight marks a major artistic milestone for Johnson, whose decades-spanning career has included multiple awards and two Grammy nominations, over 25 million album units sold worldwide, and countless sold-out tours (during which he’s emerged as a leading force in greening the global touring industry). Cale among their shared inspirations. “After a while we got a language together and I gained a trust in him that allowed me to let go, push outside my comfort zone, and get to a sound I really loved.” Engineered by Joseph Lorge (Bob Dylan, Andrew Bird, Hiss Golden Messenger) and recorded in both Los Angeles and at

The Mango Tree (Johnson’s home studio in Hawaii), Meet The Moonlight begins with the nuanced reflection of “Open Mind”: a prime introduction to the album’s spellbinding sonic backdrop and mood of mindful contemplation. One of several songs featuring his longtime bandmates Zach Gill (piano, organ, melodica), Adam Topol (drums, percussion), and Merlo Podlewski (vibraphone, percussion, bass), “Open Mind” unfolds in soulful harmonies and lush swells of fretless guitar as Johnson makes the case for a certain fullhearted optimism (e.g., “When everything around us is begging just to be loved a little more, we can pray to anything”). “Part of what I wanted to do with this album was create something that makes people feel better about the situation we’re living in, where sometimes it feels like things are completely falling apart,” he says. “‘Open Mind’ is a song about trying to find hope, which felt like a good starting point.” Later, on the galvanizing lead single “One Step Ahead,” Johnson offers up a more pensive meditation on getting by in the modern world, turning his sharply observational songwriting to the topic of toxic communication in a culture dominated by social media. scopic sonic palette by blowing into a row of beer bottles. “I love all those moments where Jack lets himself get a little weird,” says Mills. “They remind me of that clubhouse feeling of where this record was made, and the spirit that we brought to it.”

Jack Johnson continued from previous page bristling track illuminates his rare ability to impart both incisive social commentary and warmly delivered instruction within just a few indelibly catchy lines (from the chorus: “Never mind all the noise going through your head/Because every time we talk we say/The same things that we’ve said”). “We’re at a point where human nature hasn’t changed but the technology around us has changed dramatically, and it’s getting to this dangerous place where the most extreme and sensationalized opinions have the potential to be heard by so many people,” says Johnson. “That line in the chorus is about trying to breathe through the noise and get to a calmer place, which seems important when we’re seeing a lot of friends lose trust and grow away from each other because they disagree over some issue or another.” On the centerpiece and title track to Meet The Moonlight, Johnson presents a quietly hypnotic number that Mills refers to as “one of the most spiritually interesting things I’ve ever worked on.” With its sweetly languid rhythms, mantra-like vocal delivery, and otherworldly guitar work, “Meet The Moonlight” serves as a lovely respite from the outside world as Johnson shares another gentle reminder for living well (“It’s good not to miss too many chances to follow love”). “Whenever I walk outside at night and look up at the stars, it’s always a way to be present instead of worrying about the future or dwelling on the past,” he says. Noting that the track’s spacious arrangement “leaves a lot of room for the mystical,” Mills recalls a particularly charmed occurrence in bringing the “Meet The Moonlight” to life. “There’s a chord in that song that wasn’t part of the initial composition; it happened by mistake

when we were first playing it,” he says. “Jack kept trying to replace that part with something that made more sense to his ear—but in the end we kept it, because what that chord suggested was all the mystery within the song. To me that represents the whole process of us finding a common ground and working together to keep all those little idiosyncrasies tucked into the mix.” For Johnson, recording most of Meet The Moonlight at home in Hale?iwa (after starting out at L.A.’s Sound City Studios) played a vital part in finding their way to that playful spontaneity. “I’ve done so many albums now in my studio, and when I’m there it’s always easier to let go and not overthink,” he says. “Another thing that helped was Joseph Lorge was great about setting up while we were still rehearsing, and capturing that sweet spot where the song still has so much life to it. Because of that we ended up getting all these moments that feel kind of magical.” With the final round of sessions taking place at EastWest Studios in L.A. (where Johnson’s bandmates joined in), Meet The Moonlight contains such unexpected flourishes as the effervescent percussion on “Calm Down,” a song about supporting your loved ones in chaotic times. “We used the demo I’d made on my own, and the main backbeat is my wedding ring hitting against this hand drum in my studio,” says Johnson. Meanwhile, in the recording of “Costume Party,” Johnson added to the track’s kaleido-

Looking back on the questions raised throughout Meet The Moonlight, Johnson points to a piece of wisdom gleaned from Joseph Campbell: “Participate joyfully in the sorrows of the world. We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy.” “That’s something I think about a lot: when it seems like there may not be a great outcome in the future, how do you wake up each day and bring as much joy into the world as you can?” he says. A longtime environmentalist who joined his wife Kim in co-founding K?kua Hawai?i Foundation (a nonprofit devoted to supporting environmental education), Johnson has found immense purpose in caring for his community (including, most recently, working on and developing a learning farm). “That to me is the essence of joyful participation: doing what you can to see a positive result, so you can always zoom out and find some brightness when the big picture is dark,” he says. And as he gears up for a 35-date North American tour in support of Meet The Moonlight, Johnson looks forward to the unbridled sense of communion that playing live always provides. “What I love most about live shows is when everybody’s singing together, there’s a sense that we’re all connected by the lyrics or even just the sentiment of the song,” he says. “I think there’s always some kind of hope in knowing that we can share a feeling in that way, and agree with each other on a very emotional level.” Jack Johnson has released seven studio albums and two live albums that have sold over 25 million copies worldwide. His Brushfire Records label and touring crew continue to be leaders in the greening of the music industry and his All At Once social action network connects fans with local nonprofits at each tour stop. Jack, with his wife Kim, founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation to support environmental education in Hawaii’s schools and communities, as well as the Johnson Ohana Foundation to support environmental, art and music education worldwide. Proceeds from albums and tour profits, along with Johnson’s personal charitable activities, have resulted in over $37 million donated to charity since 2001.

two-year break to reflect on what they were doing. Greg Hetson wound up doing double duty and joined up with the new breakout act Bad Religion, were he remained for quite a while also still remaining a member of Circle Jerks.

The Circle Jerks Perform September 3rd At White Oak Music Hall By Kevin Wildman We’re happy to announce that one of our favorite bands is back on the road again…. Finally. For the first time in over 15 years, the Circle Jerks will be undertaking their first North American tour. In addition to that, they will be bringing along their good buddies, 7Seconds. The tour kicked off in March of this year and is scheduled to hit Houston’s White Oak Music Hall on September 3rd.

seconds to one minute and 35 seconds. They may have been short, but they were certainly mighty quickly gaining them a reputation as the band to keep your eyes and ears open for. Group Sex gained so much attention that they were quickly asked to participate in a documentary film about the L.A. Punk Scene called The Decline of Western Civilization. Their appearance in that documentary quickly cemented their standing in the growing hardcore community.

The Circle Jerks story goes back quite a few years now. The band was formed by Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris and guitarist Greg Hetson from Redd Cross. The guys took what they thought were the best parts of their own groups and combined that with the influences that they had also received from bands like the Sex Pistols and The Ramones. Hailing from the skateboarding capitol of California, Hermosa Beach, the band formed a new act with the sensibilities of the hardcore bands they grew up with. In 1980 they joined forces with bassist Roger Rogerson and drummer Luck Lehrer to record and release their first album on Frontier Records titled Group Sex. The 14 legendary tracks on this first album really took the band to the punk extreme exploding with songs that were only 27 612 Music Music Music News News News•• November •December August 2022 2020

The next album out the gate was 1982’s Wild In The Streets, and let me tell you, that album was definitely WILD! They took some 60’s pop hits like “Just Like Me”/”Put A Little Love In Your Heart” and introduced a pulsating aggressive slamdancing aggression to his further enhancing their careers and reputations. The album was so well received that they took it even further when they released their third album, Golden Shower of Hits in 1983. They obliterated Pop classics like “Along Comes Mary,” “Afternoon Delight,” “Having My Baby” and “Love Will keep Us Together” into a barrage of their own Punk classics. Original songs like “Under The Gun,” “High Price On Our Heads,” and “Rats of Reality” gave them an even more powerful stance in the Punk Community. Then the band took a

Finally in 1985 the Circle Jerks returned after their introspective break with new bandmembers, Keith Clark (drums) and Zander Schloss (bass). With that, the band released their new album and took the music even further with a tinge of Heavy Metal. The Result was 1985s Wonderful. Confusing at first to fans, they quickly jumped aboard the new Circle Jerk bandwagon. The momentum carried on to their next album, VI, where the Metal theme was even a bit more pronounced. VI was released in 1987. For the next few years, Circle Jerks kept it on the downlow for a while, finally releasing an anthology of concert performance packed in 1992 under the name Gig. However creativity struck again in 1995 in the form of Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities, a 12 song album that featured a cover version of The Soft Boys’ “I Wanna Destroy You. Even stranger, yet stunning, was the appearance of Pop Diva Debbie Gibson on the album. It seemed that young Debbie was a huge fan of the band and would show up occasionally at their concerts. By 1996 the band went on Hiatus again. The extensive touring that the band was doing was taking a toll on their spirits and health. Keith Morris developed sever medical problems that facilitated in the necessity of wearing a brace and he developed appendicitis and an onset of diabetes. By 2003 he had recovered enough to put him back on the road with the Circle Jerks as they went on tour with the Rollins Band. Without going any further into the fortunes and misfortunes of the Circle Jerks, we’d like to conclude that the band is back together again, in good spirits, and back on the road again, delivering some of the best songs the band ever produced to a following that has been clamoring for their return. If you’re a Circle Jerks fan, then mark September 3rd on your calendar and get your asses out to White Oak Music Hall for one of Punks hottest bands.

Monument was formed in London, England by Fellsilent guitarist John Browne and the Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza guitarist Josh Travis in 2007 before morphing into a full-blown touring and recording entity. After various lineup changes, the band signed with Century Media Records in 2012, announcing the addition of singer Matt Rose the same day. Their debut album, Gnosis, came out on 28 August 2012. The group’s 2012 Century Media debut, Gnosis, received a lot of international attention with its heady blend of djent-fueled riffing and hook-laden yet incredibly complex melodies. In December 2013, the band announced via Facebook that they had completed their second album. The drums were recorded in Monnow Valley, Wales with Romesh Dodangoda (Motörhead, Sylosis, Bring Me The Horizon), while the rest of the instruments were tracked DIY by Browne, and the vocals were done with Eyal Levi. In April 2014, it was formally announced that their new album, The Amanuensis, would be released on 23 June 2014. The band played on the Red Bull Studios Live Stage at the Download Fesival in June 2014. In March and April 2015, Monuments hit the road again in support of the Australian band Karnivool on their UK and European headline tour. Later that year Mike Malyan left the band during August due to injuries on his back and shoulder and was replaced by Anup Sastry, the former Intervals drummer. They played at Hevy Music Festival later that month. Surprising their fans, Anup Sastry announced on his Facebook page in June of 2016 that he was amicably leaving the band, although he returned in 2018 to record drums for the new album, Phronesis. In support of the release of the new album, Monuments performed a 31-date tour

of the United Kingdom and mainland Europe over October and November with main support from Vola. Monuments kicked off January of 2016 performing headlining shows in New Zealand, then they moved on to the Australian multi-date music festival, Progfest. By July of 2019 Chris Barretto departed the band due to “personal reasons.” Monument then made the announcement that YouTuber Andy Cizek would join on as their fill-in vocalist for the rest of the tour. On 11 October 2019 Monuments announced that Andy Cizek was now their official vocalist. Less than two months later, former drummer Mike Malyan had healed and would now be rejoining the band. Finally, in July of 2021, Monuments announced that guitarist Olly Steele had left the band to pursue other musical projects. By January of 2022, Monuments released their fourth album In Stasis which they released April 15, 2022. In Stasis features Mick Gordon (Doom, Killer Instinct, Prey) as Co Producer, with Spencer Sotelo (Periphery) and Ex-vocalist Neema Askari as guests.

Malford Milligan & Tin Cadillac Perform at Dosey Doe Big Barn On August 20 Malford Milligan is an American, Austin, Texas-based soul, blues and gospel singer who has been compared to Otis Redding, Al Green and James Carr. He is an eight-time award-winner as “Best Vocalist” at the annual Austin Music Awards (last awarded in 2015). In 1994, he helped form and fronted the Texas supergroup, Storyville, with guitarists David Holt, David Grissom, and the rhythm section from Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble, which included bassist Tommy Shannon, and drummer Chris Layton. The band released three albums: Bluest Eyes (1994), A Piece Of Your Soul (1996) and Dog Years (1998). As a session singer, Milligan was in great demand. He toured and worked on albums together with other outstanding musicians, including Doyle Bramhall II, Marcia Ball, Alejandro Escovedo, Sue Foley, Eric Johnson, Stephen Bruton, Chris Smither and Hal Ketchum. During this period he also expanded his horizons from strictly secular music, releasing the two Gospel albums The Gospel According to Austin (2000) and The Gospel According to Austin, Vol. 2 (2001). For several decades, Malford has been the lead-singer at the weekly Blue 16

Monday nights at the legendary Antone’s Nightclub, in the house-band that was (and still is) lead by Derek O’Brien, one of the most respected blues-guitarists all through Austin’s musical history. Malford appeared on Live And Beyond, by Alien Love Child featuring fellow Austin guitarist Eric Johnson, in 2000. He can be heard on “Once a Part of Me” and “Don’t Cha Know”. That same year he also contributed vocals to Throw Me A Bone, by local band Neighbor’s Dog, on “Sister Sister”, “Bridge To The Other Side” and “Today”. In 2001 a remake of the Joe Tex classic “I Want To Do Everything For You” was recorded as a duet with Toni Price, and was released on her Midnight Pumpkin album. That same year Malford was also featured on two songs on the Double Trouble album Been A Long Time (“Cry Sky” and “Skyscraper”) plus the nationwide tour that followed the release of that album. Milligan also fronted ex-Was Not Was guitarist Randy Jacobs’ band The Boneshakers in 2001-2003, releasing the albums Pouring Gasoline in 2001 and Put Some Booty On It in 2002. He left The Boneshakers to form his own group in Austin, confusingly called The

Malford Milligan Band (like its Dutch predecessor), which self-released Rides Again in 2004 [3] and No Good Deed Goes Unpunished in 2006. In 2002 Milligan recorded and released the critically acclaimed Sweet Cherry Soul album, backed by a band from The Netherlands that was put together by Milligan’s friend and Dutch musician/producer Jack Hustinx. The album contains original material written by Milligan & Hustinx as well as a blend of known and obscure Soul, Rhythm & Blues and Gospel classics. Also two songs written by Milligan’s close friend Stephen Bruton were included. This band, The Malford Milligan Band, played three very successful tours in The Netherlands in 2002-2003, as well as a tour in and around Milligan’s hometown Austin, Texas in 2003. In 2007 Milligan performed, alongside a stellar cast of musical friends of Stephen Bruton such as Delbert McClinton, Bonnie Raitt, Kris Kristofferson, Joe Ely and Ruthie Foster at the big “Road To Austin” concert in Austin, which was later released as a concert-movie and DVD in 2015. Malford Milligan continued from previous page 2007, Malford embarked on the M-P-TU project, together with guitarist Phil Brown, bassplayer Mark Andres and drummer Pat Mastelotto. The band released an album entitled M-P-TU in 2008. During that time (2007/2009) Milligan was touring with Greg Koch, a multifaceted electric guitarist capable of fluently playing a gamut of musical styles, as well. Together they formed a band called Nation Sack — drawing their name from the lyrics of a Robert Johnson song entitled “Come On in My Kitchen” — who released an album under the same name in 2009 which includes a blending of electric blues and rock styles. When performing live, Nation Sack is known to cover songs from Jeff Beck and Led Zeppelin, such as “Hi-Ho Silver Lining,” “Rock and Roll,” and excerpts from such classic tracks as “Dazed and Confused” and “Heartbreaker.” With Greg Koch, Malford released two albums: Live On The Radio (2007) and Nation Sack (2009). In 2009 Malford moved back to Austin and started getting back into the music scene there. After his longtime friend Stephen Bruton passed away on May 9th, Malford fronted the band at a special memorial show at the Saxon Pub. Recordings of this show were released on CD as An Avening With The Music Of Stephen Bruton in 2010. Another highlight of his return to Austin was his appearance (along with ex-Storyville’s David Grissom) at Antone’s for Blue Tuesday on 20 October 2009. The last two songs performed at this were “Change is Gonna Come” which appeared on Storyville’s first album and “What Passes for Love” from Storyville’s second album. In 2011 Milligan joined forces with former Dutch band member Jack Hustinx on his ‘Shiner Twins’ album ‘Four Souls – One Heart’ (2011). On this album Milligan was featured as guestvocalist on two tracks “Never Take No For An Answer” and “Hold On”. In 2013 Malford joined the weekly residency of The Apostles Of Manchaca

at Austin’s Strange Brew listening-room, until the venue was forced to close in January 2017. This band also featured well known and highly respected Austinmusicians Jeff Plankenhorn (guitarvocals), Michael O’Connor (guitarvocals), Dave Scher (guitar-vocals), Yoggie Musgrove (bass), Brannen Temple (drums) and Phil Redmond (keyboards). Unfortunately the band never released any albums. In 2014 Malford contributed vocals to Open Mic At The Knick by The Knickerbocker All Stars from Rhode Island. He can be heard on Bobby Blue Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light” and on “Love Disease”. At the 33rd annual Austin Music Awards in March 2015, Malford Milligan received his 8th award for being Austin’s best vocalist, as voted by the general public. Also in 2015 Malford started playing with a new band in Austin, Big Cat, along with guitarist Dave Sebree, bass-player Roscoe Beck and drummer Tom Brechtlein. An album entitled Big Cat was released at the end of 2015. At the same time, Malford and his Dutch friend Jack Hustinx were working together again, co-writing four songs for Hustinx’ solo-album Over Yonder, with Malford also performing on those tracks as guest vocalist. On two of those tracks (“Life Will Humble You” and “I Won’t Surrender”) Malford and Jack got assistance from John Magnie and Steve Amedée of The Subdudes from New Orleans. Right after the release in November 2015, both Milligan and

Hustinx fronted their band The Southern Aces on a tour in the Netherlands to promote the album, that was critically hailed as one of the very best Dutch Americana albums ever made. In 20152016 Malford and Jack also played together regularly in the Austin musicclubs, whenever Jack was in town, with an Austin line-up of The Southern Aces. In 2016 Malford recorded a stunning duet with Jeff Plankenhorn, reviving the Sam & Dave classic “You Got Me Hummin’”, which was featured on Plankenhorn’s Soulslide album later that same year. After Big Cat folded in 2016, Malford started a new band with guitarist Tyrone Vaughan called MVP, the Milligan Vaughan Project. With this band an album with the same name was recorded and released in 2017. That same year Malford recorded a remake of the O.V. Wright classic “Nickel And A Nail”, featured on Brad Stivers’ album Took You Long Enough. In 2017, Malford and longtime friend Jack Hustinx teamed up again. In May 2018, the two officially announced a new album they had been collaborating on for the last year, co-writing songs and exchanging ideas for an all new Malford Milligan album that was released later that year. After a succesfull tour in the Netherlands the two friends released their latest album in 2021: I Was A Witness.

When he is not rocking with The Octanes, bass player Nick Gaitan travels as a member of Billy Joe Shaver’s band. Gaitan has also received various awards from the Houston Press including several ‘bass player of the year’ honors. Burchfield and Gaitan come together to produce incredible musical chemistry that is complimented by Bart Maloney’s melodies on the pedal steel guitar while Snit Fitzpatrick taps out the rhythm on drums. The Octanes’ live performances have been described as ‘extraordinary and sensational, guaranteed to have you on your feet and begging for more.’ This band is filled with energy exhibiting the deep relationship they share with their music. and a bit more effort to craft a look and sound that was original – or odd – enough to get noticed by record companies, and then by the record buying audience. There’s probably no better early ’80s’ example of this than A Flock of Seagulls. The band, founded by hairdressers Mike Score and Frank Maudsley, Score’s brother Ali, and Paul Reynolds was a late product of the Liverpool music scene that produced such hard hitting pop acts as Mikes Score Live, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Teardrop Explodes.

Their first single – “Telecommunication” – was an electro-dance beat piece of new wave pop that sounds like an early New Order. Still, their early offerings were enough to land them an opening slot on Squeeze’s US tour, and the next six months were spent building up a substantial American following. With their eponymous debut album in 1982 came the hit “Space Age Love Song,” a happy romantic song of love and loss, and in 2001 was featured in Columbia Pictures’ Not Another teen Movie, and the song for which they will always be remembered for by most Americans – “I Ran“. The music video for “I Ran” is ‘head spinning,’ yet possibly the most remembered 80s’ hit ever made, where singer Score sports his trademark ‘waterfall’ hair and looks pensive in a room covered from floor to ceiling with aluminum foil, in which you can see the reflection of the cameras. 80s’ Classic. A Flock of Seagulls was initially criticized in their native land for not wanting to become UK pop stars, but they would make a mark on the UK charts anyway, after the release of their second album Listen, which included the top ten single “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You).” The song is hauntingly powerful in the same early-’80stechno way as Nik Kershaw’s “Wouldn’t It Be Good” and Thomas Dolby’s “One of Our Submarines,” songs which still stand up to this day. The band’s next offering was their third album The Story Of A Young Heart, which featured another song about heartbreak and life titled, “The More You Live, The More You Love.” This 80’s classic still receives regular radio play, as do “I Ran,” “Space Age Love Song,” and “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You).” Twenty year later the band is back touring and sounding stronger than ever, performing all of their greatest hits: “I Ran,” “Space Age Love Song,” “Telecommunication,” “DNA” (Grammy Award Winning Song, 1984), “Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You),” “The More You Live, The continued on page 22

The English Beat Wang Chung Wang Chung’s story begins in the late 1970s, when the creative core of Jack Hues and Nick Feldman first met in London. Prompted by the freedom of the punk music movement in England, they played together in several avant-garde bands before finally becoming “Huang Chung” in 1980. The band signed a recording contract with Arista Records in 1981 after adding drummer Darren Costin to the lineup, and released their debut self-titled Huang Chung LP in 1982. By 1983, the band switched from Arista to Geffen Records in America. The band also changed their name to “Wang Chung” and immediately went back to the studio to record. 1984 saw Wang Chung’s debut release on their new record label, entitled Points On The Curve. “Dance Hall Days” was their first major hit in Britain, yet the band hit the Top 40 twice in America – “Don’t Let Go” made it to number 36, while “Dance Hall Days” peaked at number 16 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. By the summer of 1984, “Dance Hall Days” was a worldwide hit. Drummer Darren Costin left the band in late 1984. In 1985, the motion picture soundtrack for the film To Live and Die in L.A. was released, allowing Jack Hues and Nick Feldman to take an experimental turn when Academy Award winning director William Friedkin asked them to score his movie. The soundtrack album not only contained Wang Chung’s pop stylings, but also included several instrumental tracks as well. The theme song from William Friedkin’s thrilling film was another hit for the band, but the song just missed making the Top 40 in 1985. Jack Hues and Nick Feldman continued as a duo and released Mosaic in 1986. The album was their biggest success, launching the number two hit “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” and the top ten smash “Let’s Go!.” “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” was instantly accessible, universally appealing, and one of the most memorable songs of the decade.

One tempestuous weekend in March 1979 was not only the date of the Three Mile Island nuclear incident, but also, in Birmingham, England, the very first show by a nascent band known as The Beat. Introduced as “the hottest thing since the Pennsylvania meltdown”, the band had a sense that the next few years could well be explosive! The Beat hailed from working class, industrial Birmingham, England. When The Beat rushed on to the music scene in 1979, it was a time of social, political and musical upheaval. Into this storm came The Beat, trying to calm the waters with their simple message of love and unity set to a great dance beat. The Beat were all about inclusion, rather than exclusion, and this showed in their personnel and their music influences. The original band consisted of Dave Wakeling on vocals and guitar, Andy Cox on guitar, David Steele on bass, and Everett Morton on drums – later additions Ranking Roger (toasting) and foundational First Wave Ska legend Saxa (saxophone) completed the outfit. The band crossed over fluidly between soul, reggae, pop and punk, and from these disparate pieces they created an infectious dance rhythm. Along with their contemporaries The Specials, The Selecter, and Madness, the band became an overnight sensation and one of the most popular and influential bands of the British Two Tone Ska movement.

profits from their highly successful single version of Stand Down Margaret to the Committee for Nuclear Disarmament. They donated their music to causes including the anti-nuclear benefit album Life in The European Theatre, The World of Music and Dance album focusing on indigenous people’s art, and lent their voices to The Special AKA’s anthemic freedom cry Free Nelson Mandela, to name but a few. Dave Wakeling once said that every great band only has three really good albums. And true to form, The Beat decided to call it quits after their third album, Special Beat Service. Of course, that was not the last we would hear from the Beat boys. Consummate showman that he is, Dave Wakeling has continued to keep The Beat alive and strong. How could he not? Dave continues to tour the world as The English Beat with an amazing all-star ska backing band playing all the hits of The Beat, General Public, and his new songs.

Missing Persons In 1980 the Missing Persons made their first record, a 4-song EP entitled Missing Persons, in Zappa’s brand-new Utility Muffin Research Kitchen studios. The band toured, promoted the EP, appeared in the movie Lunch Wagon, and became a mustsee band among the Los Angeles live music crowd. “Mental Hopscotch” was a #1 record on local radio station KROQ-FM, and the self-promoted EP sold 7,000 copies.

By Christmas of 1979, The Beat were riding high in the UK charts with their first single, a smoking remake of the classic Smokey Robinson tune Tears of a Clown. Over the course of the next five years The Beat toured relentlessly and released three studio albums: I Just Can’t Stop It, Wh’appen, and Special Beat Service. The band toured the world, touring with such artists as David Bowie, The Police, REM, The Clash, The Talking Heads, The Pretenders, and The Specials, to name but a few. The Beat kept scoring hits with tunes that have now become so popular that it’s hard to remember a time when they didn’t exist, such as Mirror in the Bathroom, Save it for Later, I Confess, Stand Down Margaret, and their serene cover of the Andy William penned Can’t Get Used To Losing You.

Two years of hard work led up to a signing with Capitol Records in 1982. With label support, the re-released EP sold another 250,000 units, and the new full-length album Spring Session M (an anagram of “Missing Persons”) went Gold.

Despite their huge success, The Beat continued singing about and acting on the problems we all face. They donated all the

The singles “Mental Hopscotch,” “Surrender Your Heart” (1984), “Destination Unknown,” “Words,” “Walking in L.A.,” and “Windows” met with varying success, especially in the local markets of Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. The visual effects used in the music video for “Words” were unusual for the time, making it popular on the fledgling cable TV channel MTV. Missing Persons also appeared at a three-day Southern California concert known as the US Festival in May 1983.

The Lost 80s Live continued from page 24 and on MTV with the striking music video for “Surrender Your Heart” that was designed by Peter Max, the 1984 album Rhyme & Reason was considered experimental, and the band followed up with the more conventional Color In Your Life in June 1986. During the early 1990s, Dale Bozzio toured with her own hired band using the name “Missing Persons” and performing Missing Persons songs. She now tours under the name “DALE BOZZIO original member MISSING PERSONS.” Some of her musicians have been Wes Wehmiller, Ron Poster, Mike Mangini, Anthony Resta, Ben Sesar, Tony Savarino, Brad Miller, Jeff Calder, Michael T. Ross, Van Spragins, Michael Maysonet, James Sperry and Eric Welsh. In June 2005, Missing Persons featuring Dale Bozzio appeared on week five of the NBC show Hit Me Baby One More Time. They performed “Words” and a cover of the Kylie Minogue dance track, “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” DALE BOZZIO and MISSING PERSONS has toured throughout the United States During the past few decades, the band has made several appearances on the Lost 80’s Live tour and have played throughout the US.

Annimotion In his book Totally Awesome 80s (St. Martin’s Press New York 1996), Matthew Rettenmund listed Animotion’s “Obsession” as #3 in his list of Quintessentially 80s Songs. The band’s name, Animotion was also chosen 26 Music News • August 2022

as the second best band name of the 80s! Radio stations around the world continue to play Animotion’s biggest hit, “Obsession.” Once upon a time in Los Angeles, there was a retro science fiction band called Red Zone, featuring Astrid Plane on vocals. Charles Octavo was producer of their first and only album Living on Lust, and it was voted as one of 1982s 10 Best Albums in L.A. by Music Connection Magazine. Larry Ross of CBS Records became interested in signing the band but it was not meant to be, and in 1983 Red Zone disbanded. Astrid and Charles together with Ross put together a new band. Astrid invented the name Animotion to convey energy and motion. They recruited ex-Red Zone band members Frenchy O’Brien (drums) and Paul Antonelli (keyboards). Charles switched from producer/manager to bass player for the newly formed band. Ross quit CBS records to become their full time manager and he brought in Bill Wadhams to front the band with Astrid. In March 1984 they did a showcase for Russ Regan of Polygram Records and inked the deal soon after. During the recording of the first album, Bill brought in guitarist Don Kirkpatrick and keyboard player Greg Smith. The album was released in late 1984 and Animotion began getting their first airplay from KROQ in Los Angeles. KROQ added “Obsession” to their heavy rotation playlist and the band was now selling out shows all over Hollywood. KISSFM in L.A. answered by sponsoring a 5-day heavyweight “Battle of the Bands.” After 5 days of some serious competition the champion was Animotion, beating out worthy opponents such as Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Animotion was on their way to their first top 10 hit! In 1985 Animotion hit the road for their first tour of the West Coast. Later, they toured with Howard Jones playing to sold out arenas and stadiums across the US and Canada while “Obsession” was climbing the charts worldwide. Between 1985-1986 Animotion made several TV appearances on American Bandstand, Solid Gold, and Soul Train. Astrid and Bill were presenters at the 1986 American Music Awards with the original soul diva Diana Ross. Sharing the stage with Ms. Ross was truly a “supreme” moment for Astrid! Video producer Ken Walz (Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”) put together a wild visual interpretation of “Obsession” complete with a Gladiator, a Samurai, and Cleopatra romping around a decadent mansion in the Hollywood Hills. The video enjoyed very heavy airplay on MTV and made it to number 1 in Cashbox magazine’s video chart.

Dramarama Bang, and here we go… Sporting three of the original “four-

ish” members of Dramarama (“four-ish,” you ask? Well, they didn’t start out with a permanent drummer, and after all, are many drummers really permanent?), the band is having more fun than ever and exudes a confidence and ease that only can come through experience. With the addition thirteen or so years ago of bassist Mike Davis (among other accomplishments, Mike is also the bass player for Metal God Rob Halford,) and drummer Tony Snow (The Change, Glimmer Stars, as well as a permanent member of Dramarama) original Dramarama members Peter Wood, Mark Englert, and John Easdale have really found their musical brethren. If you saw Dramarama back in the day and thought they were good, now you’ll be blown away; these guys are PHENOMENAL!* *Of course this is subjective and mainly applies to those audiences with common sense and exceptional musical taste. Every show is live, no tapes or tracks here! Every show is different, no formula, no set list. Every show is at least five talented guys having a great time on stage and sharing that experience with the audience. Dramarama is Mark Englert (Lead/ Rhythm Guitar); Peter Wood (Lead/Rhythm Guitar); Mike Davis (Bass); Tony Snow (Drums) and John Easdale (Singer/ Songwriter). Dramarama’s “Anything, Anything (I’ll Give You)” remains one of the most requested songs of all time on Los Angeles’s World Famous KROQ 106.7 FM

Musical Youth Musical Youth is a British Jamaican reggae band formed in 1979 in Birmingham, England. The Lost 80s Live continued from previous page collaboration with Donna Summer. Musical Youth earned a Grammy Award nomination before disbanding in 1985, but returned in 2001 as a duo. The group was formed in 1979 when the fathers of Kelvin and Michael Grant and Frederick (known as Junior) and Patrick Waite put together a band featuring their sons. The latter pair’s father, Frederick Waite Sr, had been a member of the Jamaican reggae group The Techniques. Frederick sang lead with Junior at the start of Musical Youth’s career. Although schoolboys, the group managed to secure gigs at different Birmingham pubs and released a double single in 1981, including songs “Generals” and “Political,” on a local label. An appearance on BBC Radio 1 John Peel’s evening show brought further attention to the group, and they were signed to MCA Records. By that time, founding member Frederick Waite Jr had backed down to be replaced by Dennis Seaton as lead singer. In September 1982, the group issued one of the fastest-selling singles of the year, “Pass the Dutchie” with the record going to number 1 in the UK Singles Chart in October 1982. It went on to sell over four million copies and was nominated for a Grammy Award, and was followed with a Top 10 placing on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. Their debut album The Youth of Today was certified gold in the UK, while the follow-up single, “Youth of Today,” reached number 13 in the UK Singles Chart and “Never Gonna Give You Up” released early in 1983, climbed to UK number 6. Minor successes with “Heartbreaker” and “Tell Me Why” were succeeded by a collaboration with Donna Summer on the UK Top 20 hit, “Unconditional Love.” The group also took part in her 1983 TV special A Hot Summer Night with Donna. Their second album, Different Style!, was released in 1983. A revival of Desmond Dekker’s “007” saw them back in the Top 30, with one final hit, “Sixteen.” The band received a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards of 1984. Now reduced to a duo, Michael Grant and Dennis Seaton reformed Musical Youth in 2001.

“Living on Video” is a 1981 song by Trans-X, which was re-released in 1985 and became a massive hit worldwide, as well as peaking at #61 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has been covered by many artists throughout the years. Remixed by Trans-X in 2003 and again 2006, the remix by French DJ Pakito made it a hit. which also streamed worldwide on FANS/ Relix/Twitch channel to over three million viewers. Summer Traditions 2022 is sure to remain an annual rite of passage for the group’s diehard fanbase known as “Stoopidheads”, as they travel the states, sharing good times with one another through music and community, as they have done since the band’s inception 25 years ago.

Joining Slightly Stoopid for their Summer Traditions 2022 tour are special guests Pepper, Common Kings, and Fortunate Youth. Summer Traditions was originally intended as the 2020 tour package, later canceled due to the Covid19 pandemic. After a consistent two decades on the road came to a halt in 2020, Slightly Stoopid has committed to deliver the same line-up and same experience, amongst many of the same venues in 2022! In an abbreviated 2021, Slightly Stoopid performed a handful of shows including Petco Park in their hometown San Diego, and a landmark two-night sold-out Red Rocks “Double On The Rocks” weekend,

I do get some very almost teary moments. It has been quite interesting because Closer really does have a big effect on people, from an emotional point of view. Unknown Pleasures is very aggressive, it’s very punky, so live, it really rocks. Whereas Closer is almost the exact opposite: it’s very melancholic. It draws you in, and I must admit not only does it get a very emotional response from us while playing it, but you get an emotional response from the audience.” - Peter Hook, in an interview with Big Takeover A massive cross cross-continental journey, taking them across the United States and Canada in August and September 2022 for their biggest and most extensive trek to date, Peter Hook & The Light’s “Joy Division: A Celebration” North American tour launches August

Since announcing the tour last summer both Chicago shows at Metro are sold-out and joining as special guests will be El Ten Eleven in Chicago (both shows), Boston, Silver Springs, MD, Philadelphia, New York, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. At some twenty-six dates overall, the tour takes place across five weeks as the band return to some venues and debut at others to perform Joy Division’s seminal two albums Unknown Pleasures and Closer in full with additional Joy Division rarities and an opening set of New Order material. The tour follows the debut UK dates for “Joy Division: A Celebration” which commemorate the 40th anniversary of Joy Division and Ian Curtis’ continuing influence. Returning for his ninth tour of the States with Peter Hook & The Light, Hooky comments: “Definitely one of the highlights/ continued on next page

It was amazing what a blessing it was not to have to do it over lockdown but amazing again how soon you missed seeing all these wonderful places the world has to offer. You lot in America are so lucky to have such a varied and wonderful country. I can’t wait to get back there, and my mouth is watering at the thought of going to my first ‘Coffee Shop’ breakfast. I am easily pleased. “We have always been lucky to have been appreciated as much as we have in the States, ever since our first tour in September 1980. I am hoping for much the same this time. There is definitely a great appreciation for both Joy Division’s & New Order’s music.”

These first dates were originally scheduled for May 2020, but due to the pandemic have only just taken place in the UK and across France to great reviews and reactions from fans and critics alike to The Light’s dedication to and passion for the catalogue across what is a near three-hour show. About the reaction on returning to live concerts, Hooky added; “The gigs so far have all been wonderful and the fans and the band have been wonderful too! It does nothing for my imposter syndrome;( “ “I am very grateful that we have all risen back to this after what we have been through these past few years. Thank you all. We have a lot to be thankful for. With double concerts at the same venue announced for the opening nights in Toronto and then in Chicago, Austin, and Los Angeles the tour also takes in Montreal, Royal Oak, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Boston, Silver Spring, Philadelphia, New York, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, Denver, San Diego, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver. These Joy Division album shows have become much less common for The Light as they moved through their progression of touring the New Order albums in succession in the twelve years since Hooky began his odyssey through both his bands’ back catalogues. That journey has seen them now perform his bands’ albums all round the world including numerous tours of North and South America, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and Asia. Just a brilliant live band.” - Music Fiends “A real treat.” - LA Record “It was certainly one of those special shows were the venue, artist, and fans all clicked perfectly to make for a very memorable experience and a blazing hot and awesome show by a legendary artist and performer, who in my opinion is the heart and soul of New Order keeping the most authentic live performance of their music alive for old and new fans.” - Rock Subculture “By focusing solely on the music and allowing the songs inherent structure to do the heavy lifting instead of blowing them up into pseudo-stadium cuts, their inherent virtues were that much more apparent. The Fabulous Thunderbirds Perform At The House Of Blues August 26 For over 30 years, The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been the quintessential American band. The group’s distinctive and powerful sound, influenced by a diversity of musical styles, manifested itself into a unique musical hybrid via such barnburners as “Tuff Enuff” and “Wrap It Up”. Co-founder Kim Wilson, the sole original member, still spearheads the group as it evolves into its newest incarnation. And this year his solo album “Take Me Back” is nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.

called Wilson his favorite harmonica player and vocalist. “Muddy Waters was very good to me,” Wilson says. “He almost adopted me. I’ll never forget him.”

The band continues to tour extensively, in both the U.S. and Europe. Wilson is currently writing songs on his own, with band members and other writers.

For Kim Wilson, the musical journey started in Goleta, California. At 17 he began playing the harmonica. His influences included Little Walter, George “Harmonica” Smith, Lazy Lester and James Cotton. At the same time, Wilson began singing and was deeply impacted by Bobby “Blue” Bland, B.B. King, Otis Rush, Jimmy Rodgers and Muddy Waters. In search of other musicians who shared his love of the blues, Wilson headed to Minneapolis. He stayed there for a year and a half, playing locally, before moving to the burgeoning music scene of Austin, Texas. It was there that he met Jimmie Vaughan and they founded the T-Birds in 1974. The band developed a reputation as a compelling live act and subsequently signed a record deal with CBS/Epic Records.

The thread throughout the T-Birds career has been the respect the group commanded for its peerless musicianship and devotion to the sounds of blues, R & B and rock ‘n roll. In fact, Muddy Waters

In 1979, The Fabulous Thunderbirds released their first self-titled album. Primarily blues influenced, it became a cult classic. “Things were wide open back then,” Wilson recalls. “There were

“We started as a straight blues band”, vocalist and harmonica player Wilson says. “We now incorporate a mixture of a lot of different styles. We’re an American music band and we’re much higher energy than we were before.”

hundreds of stages where bands could show what they had.” In subsequent releases, the band started to incorporate more Cajun, rock ‘n roll and soul influences. The album “T-Bird Rhythm” marked a creative turning point for the group as it collaborated with noted producer Nick Lowe. In 1986, The Fabulous Thunderbirds reached a commercial peak with the album, “Tuff Enuff”. The single of the same title as well as the singles “Wrap It Up” and “Look At That”, all went top 40. The song, “Tuff Enuff” was featured in the film “Gung Ho” starring Michael Keaton. For the remainder of the ’80s, the band continued to record and tour, and released the album, “Powerful Stuff”. Jimmie Vaughn left in 1989 but Wilson kept the group going, incorporating keyboards into the guitar-driven sound. Kim moved back to California in 1996, continuing to cultivate the T-Birds music. “The thing about the T-Birds is that we can play both blues festival and rock venues,” Wilson comments. “We’re a diversified band now and everybody’s on the same page.”

The Biker, The Blues, Festivals, & Keep On Truckin’ (If you haven’t done a legitimate blues festival you haven’t lived. Normally two or three days of musical bliss jammed with like minded blues lovers. Most festivals schedule a number of sub-genre performances so just about everybody that attends gets down with the music. Traditional blues, blues rock, slow blues, dirty blues, elegant blues, all kinds of sub-genres each with its own appeal) I was scooting up the freeway on my way to Casper Wyoming from Kansas City by way of I-29 north until I would connect onto Interstate 80 and then head west. I pulled into a place named Nebraska City as I had been told that they had begun to hold an annual Blues Festival. The festival was sponsored by a craft brewing company out of Lincoln Nebraska known as Backswing Brewing Company. I had read that Whispering Pines is where it’s held but I wasn’t too sure at the time. A rather new event but as blues festivals go if any of them continue to host them they grow real big real fast just look at Chicago Blues Fest or any number of others around the world. I had heard that this one offers ribs, corn, brews and blues and basically is there anything else in this world better than that? Prior to arriving I ran into a husband and wife truck driving team. Nice folks from somewhere in the Georgia area I think they said. They specialize in long haul loads and as long as they keep moving the money is good. The gal, her name was Melissa, told me about her Dad, he’s passed now but he was a dyed in the wool Harley guy having rode Shovelheads for the better part of his life. Obviously, I related to that as that’s what I ride so it was an interesting conversation. Melissa, and Mister was his name, warned me about a speed trap about a hundred miles west and I was grateful to learn that bit of news. It was around 4pm and they were headed to a campground a bit up the road. They told me that the place allowed folks on two wheels with a sleeping bag. Kind of rare but it sounded ideal and upon arrival it was definitely a cool place. By the time I had arrived Mister and Melissa had already registered and parked in a shaded truck area. I registered and was directed toward the back end of the campground. Maybe that sounds bad but it wasn’t as they had outdoor sinks with running water, indoor showers, clean restrooms, picnic tables, and grills. Close by there were tent dwellers who seemed a bit skeptical of a guy riding a chopper. I wanted to tell one of them not to worry too much as I had all my shots and was not communicable well at least that I knew of anyway. Odd how some folks can just make rash judgments without knowing someone at all. I suppose that’s due to fear and fear of course can be a weird motivator. Before arriving I had stopped at a NAPA auto parts store and picked up two spark plugs. I thought I would swap them out either later that night or in the morning. The ones in the engine were fine I just wanted to change the heat range due to the upcoming change in elevation. Interestingly enough I got a craving for pork and beans for some reason and decided to walk back to the front entrance where I had noticed a small grocery store. Along the way I saw my new truck driver friends and they motioned me over their way. When I reached them I could smell hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill and typical to on the road hospitality they invited me to sit down and passed me a cold beer. It was interesting because here we were two different lifestyles, them in their big rig and me on my bike, different but not really. They were living on the road and so was I. We understood each other rather well. Melissa had one of those cylindrical blue tooth boom tower speakers sitting on the picnic table. I asked if they would like some good blues. They smiled and nodded yes. I accessed my cell phone and chose a playlist that I used to listen to on flights. The first song was Canned Heat’s famous “On The Road continued on next page

Page 2 - The Biker, The Blues, Festivals, & Keep On Truckin’ Again”. It started and we toasted to both the music and the lyrics. “On The Road Again” was released by Canned Heat in January of ‘68 on the Liberty Records label. Today it remains a cult classic synonymous with the Woodstock era and freedom. When the song ended a voice yelled out. “good song man play another one” which of course it was coming right up. The next song was a Joe Cocker number named “Feelin’ Alright” and it was my good friend’s, Carlos, favorite song. We lost Carlos a few years back but his spirit will always be with me along with a countless number of his friends. He rode a bike too and one time he traveled with me to Pittsburgh to hear Jake’s Blues (aka Jake Banta) perform on a riverboat that docks there. But that’s another story for another day. The man was something else. But on this day at the campground I was telling Mister and Melissa about that trip and they were familiar with those blues cruises which made the telling of the adventure even better. Next up on the playlist the Rolling Stones with “Miss You”. That somewhat far off voice was back yelling “Oh Ya”. I wondered if a person could get thrown out of a campground for having too much fun. The song “Miss You” came out in May of ‘78 which means it was about ten years later than “On The Road Again”. Both good tunes, upbeat and cool. Melissa told me that her and Mister had met while working at a restaurant in Texas. One of their original ideas was to open their own place. He would be the chef and she would manage the front office. Well they fell in love and eventually cashed their checks, quit their jobs and went lived by the San Jacinto river for a while. To this day they still love camping and cooking and with that she handed over one of her Mister Missy Burgers. Got to tell you it was really good. I still needed to walk to the little grocery store so I begged away and made tracks on the small dirt road. I hadn’t walked about an eighth of a mile and a voice I had become all too familiar with as I am sure most everyone else on our end of the campground knew too shouted, “Hey are you with those folks playing all that music”? I shook my head yes and told him that if they walked over to their campsite they would probably find more music, food, and beer. He seemed to nod yes, grabbed the gal’s hand he was with and it seemed to me they were making a bee line to go see the truck folks. In the back of my mind I also knew that I would have to walk passed everyone on my way back with whatever I would pick up at the store. I remember thinking that this could get interesting and true to form it was indeed. We knocked off a case, swapped road lies, then called it a night. I woke up early smelling fresh mowed grass that I hadn’t noticed the night before. There was a bit of dew on the ground and somebody, somewhere was frying some really good smelling bacon. Time to hit the head, clean up, roll up the bed roll, kick the shovel over and make tracks west. Nice morning with the sun behind me, very little traffic, and the engine was purring. I had installed a new S&S carburetor not too long ago and I thought ok now might be a really good time to see how she does on top end. So I turned my right wrist and in a flash I was hauling ass Jack. I passed 100 mph and decided to slow down (the speed trap would be somewhere around here) and so I dropped continued on next page August 2022 • Music News

Page 3 - The Biker, The Blues, Festivals, & Keep On Truckin’ down to a subtle 80 mph. Life is good out here and I was still thinking about the aroma of that bacon back at camp. So a breakfast nook would be good ust about now but sometimes in life you can’t always get what you want just like the song goes. I finally pulled into Nebraska City was really hungry by now but not for lunch, I still wanted breakfast. I saw an elderly man and the woman he was with getting into an older classic Chevy truck. I pulled up beside the driver’s side window. The man smiled and gave me a thumbs up which was cool. He rolled down his window and I asked where a guy might find a good breakfast in Nebraska City and he said, “Without a doubt The Downtowner Restaurant”. However, he didn’t stop there he went on to tell me that he had owned one of the very first Indian Motorcycles in these parts way back when he was a young man. I asked him if he still had it and he said no actually he had lent it to his cousin who wrecked it and parts were hard to come by back then. I told him I was riding a ‘75 Shovel that took me four years to complete. He nodded, it was obvious that he knew what I was talking about. Interestingly enough he pulled out without me asking where this restaurant was located. You know it seems that if you talk to me about bikes, cigars, blues, or women I seem to lose my memory. Been that way my whole life. Ok so I needed to find this place. Right about then a car pull into that same parking space right beside me and the man got out on the driver’s side. I asked if he could tell me where the Downtowner was and he just smiled and pointed a few store fronts down the sidewalk. I could have crawled up under a rock, duh! So I shut her down and walked about four doors down the sidewalk to the Downtowner Café. Nice clean place, quiet, friendly folks. Breakfast was good and afterward I asked the server where Whispering Pines was and followed the lady’s directions. However, once I arrived I leaned that they hadn’t hosted a blues festival since Co-Vid began and I thought how appropriate. I have a cell phone, I could have called, but no I didn’t so there you go. Nice lady, in fact everybody in Nebraska City was pleasant, she told me that she was sure they would hold another festival in the future. Armed with that information and a bit deflated I was ready for cold beer and music. After all that is what I came for in the first place on my way to Casper and points beyond. Yet it was another nice day and I was wondering what was up the road. Cool Lincoln Nebraska and in Lincoln there is the Zoo Bar which is famous for its annual July Zoo Fest. Lincoln was about one hour away and lots of day light left so why not? Actually when it comes to the blues The Zoo Bar has been supporting live blues for years. When I arrived the place did not disappoint at all. Daytime and the place was already humming right along and with good reason the buzz was that veteran bluesman Albert Castiglia would be performing on Friday, July 22nd. Now that’s cool. For a guy born in 1969 Albert has performed with a virtual who’s who of established greats in blues. Many much older than himself but his gift was and remains obvious. Cool is cool so doors were opening for him and the man was on board. Most recently Albert performed on stage with another great bluesman, Mike Zito. Now Albert was going to entertain blues lovers at The Zoo Bar in Lincoln, way cool for them. By the way if you want to hear some really good blues on the radio check out KZUM from anywhere in the world. Until next month - adios! 46

Matute Perform at Smart Financial Centre

Matute Brings Their Quinceanera Tour To Smart Financial Centre August 20th for one special night of great entertainment.

Matute is a Mexican pop “covers” group formed in 2007. The sextet is led by singer and producer Jorge D’Alessio, son of actors Lupita D’Alessio and Jorge Vargas. Conceived as an act to pay tribute to the music of the ’80s from both English- and Spanish-speaking acts, their repertoire consists of bilingual versions of hits from the era, often in medley format. D’Alessio created the group after coordinating sponsored musical tours for a major refreshment company, where he met many musicians and singers. Named for a cartoon character from the kids’ television show Don Gato y Sus Gang, the band played its first show to a mere 14 people. Their first recording was a cover of “Sal de Mi Piel” with the Mexican singer Belinda, chosen because its original was cut by RBD, who had recently split. Their self-financed debut album,

Ochenterizzimo, was recorded in Italy and featured covers of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” the Outfield’s “Your Love,” Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon,” and Marco Antonio Solis’ “Tú Me Vuelves Loco.” They commenced their first live themed show, entitled The 80’s Box Show, at a nightspot south of Mexico City. Mexican pop singer Anahí (formerly of RBD) checked out the album and concert. Impressed, she invited them to open first her Brazilian and then her global tours. With the money they earned, Matute began creating a show called La Guerra de los 80’s, bigger, brighter, and more dynamic than the first. They won opening spots on tours by other artists and attracted press attention as a band to watch. They followed this review with Matute Show in Acapulco, featuring a guest spot from the beloved Mexican pop group Flans. Tickets flew out the door and Matute got their own national television show, MatuTV, in 2011. A second studio album, Deseo, uncharacteristically featured mostly originals and

was issued a year later. In 2013, Matute released the concert album En Vivo!, which earned double gold status in Mexico; they followed it a year later with Matute en Vivo, Vol. 2 (it offered readings of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and a “Gimmick Medley” that combined “Don’t You Forget About Me,” “Beds Burning,” and “Relax,” as well as several rock en español and cumbia medleys. In 2015, they toured Mexico and the United States with a new show called Tour la Matutera. The group reentered the recording studio in 2016. They emerged with Poderes de los Duetos Fantásticos ¡Actívense!, an album of duets performed with artists such as Anahí, Los Claxons, Tren a Marte, and Julion Alvarez, to name a few. The album topped the Mexican pop charts in early 2017. Their most recent release is 2020’s Navidad Matute.

Me Vuelves Loco”.

Agosto 2022 • Music News

RANDOM SHOTS

Randy Soffar, M.O.D. and So Far The Sharks Testing The Waters At Leon’s I decided to stop into Leon’s Lounge, this Friday Night. I had heard that Randy Soffar, the original founder of the band ZRocks was working on a couple of new projects and was going to be there with a full band. It had been billed as “The Mean Old Dog’s”. comprised of Randy Soffar (Guitar/Vocals), Jeff Jackson (Bass/Vocals) and Jonathan Barber (Drums). “The Mean Old Dogs” started with a high energy train beat tune called “Doctor Doctor” that got my feet tapping from the get go, followed by a love song and one about growing up in Houston. The set progressed into some really well-crafted songs composed of lyrical and instrumental hooks that tickle the good parts of your brain. The sound was quite a departure from the 80’s sound of Z-Rocks that I remember from Randy’s past. This was more of an Alternative Americana / Country blend and I really liked it. I’m still singing “Blue Skies and Bluebonnets”. When M.O.D. got back up for another set Randy stepped up to the Mic and said “Well I think we are going to have a special appearance by “So Far The Sharks”. There was a little pause and he proceeded to tell a little story of his days back in the 80’s with Z-Rocks. Turns out he is working on a new project that he’s calling “So Far The Sharks” in which he will be recutting some Z-Rocks tunes and releasing songs that were scheduled to be on the 2nd Z-Rocks LP which was never released. The set started with a pumping song called “Please Stay” followed by the high energy pop rock sound that was the signature of his Z-Rocks material like “The Way She Looks at Me”, “On Her”, “To Be with You”, and of course “The Teacher’s A Punk”. By the end of the set the place was pumping and jumping. I’m looking forward to hearing more from these guys. (Photos By Kevin D. Wildman) 66 Music News • August 68 June 2022 2022

Also on this night they had guest drummer Steve Heatherington sit in as well. I really enjoyed their set in which they delivered flawless vocals and harmonies. They perform a nice blend of really good originals along with some covers that they add their own signature to. William And The Texas Starlight Perform At Shady Acres Saloon When I heard that William and The Texas Starlight were going to be back over at Shady Acres Saloon, I made a point of going by and seeing them. This is one of my favorite Country bands. Their shows are always fantastic. The band is led by William Von Reichbauer, who by the way, is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. Tonight’s show was exactly what we expected... fantastic! The band was in fine form as they performed songs by Ray Price (“Heartaches By The Number”), Johnny Cash (“One Piece At A Time” and “Get Rhythm”), Buck Owens (“Close Up The Honky Tonks”), Dwight Yoakam (The Streets Of Bakersfield”), and Del Reeves (“Looking At The World Through A Windshield”). Yeah, these guys are the real deal. Check them out sometime over at Shady Acres Saloon when they return. (Photos By Kevin D. Wildman) 76
