Cantus Perform at The Clarion at Brazosport College March 2 Cantus is an eight-member male vocal a cappella ensemble based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Cantus is a full-time, professional vocal chamber ensemble, made up of eight men singing in a TTBB (tenor, tenor, baritone, bass), changed male voice arrangement. The artists are self-led, with programming and musical direction coming from within the group itself. The ensemble is known for innovative concert programming, often tying together works of numerous genres to explore a selected narrative, including classical music, orchestral-vocal repertoire, folk music, art song, popular songs, spirituals, and newly commissioned works. The vocal group maintains a schedule of around 70 live concert performances and 30-40 education/outreach activities in a given season, both in the United States of America and abroad. Cantus is an active proponent of music education, encouraging people of all ages - especially men - to sing. The ensemble has worked with tens of thousands of singers throughout the country in educational activities ranging from master classes to festivals and collaborations. New members are acquired through annual national auditions. The ensemble began as a student-run organization at St. Olaf College in 1995. After a successful northeast tour in the summer of 1998, Cantus transitioned into a professional ensemble and non-profit organization by 1999, based out of Minneapolis, MN. Cantus is the only artist-led full-time vocal ensemble in the United States, and is one of two professional classical male vocal ensembles in the United States that pays its artists full-time salaries, while maintain-

ing a year-round schedule of performances, the other being San Francisco’s Chanticleer. The ensemble received the 2009 Chorus America Margaret Hillis Award, the first collaborative ensemble to do so. The ensemble’s regular work with students nationwide also garnered Chorus America’s Education Outreach Award in 2011. Cantus was selected by Minnesota Public Radio to be Artists in Residence for the 2010–11 season. The residency included supported touring, radio co-hosting, and international broadcasts via Performance Today. In recent seasons, Cantus has been featured with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Boston Pops, and on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. 2014 marked the final year of the group’s critically acclaimed collaboration with Theater Latte Da, All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, which tells the true story of the Christmas Truce of 1914, when World War I soldiers set down their arms to celebrate the holidays with the enemy. Cantus has released numerous critically acclaimed recordings in 24-bit, HighResolution Compact Disc format, most of which were recorded by noted engineer and Stereophile Magazine Editor, John Atkinson. The group’s 2010, 2011, and 2012 releases That Eternal Day, Christmas with Cantus, and On the Shoulders of Giants brought in the Grammy Award-winning production team of Steve Barnett and Preston Smith for recording, engineering, and mastering. The current members of Cantus are Jacob Christopher, Zachary Colby, Alberto de la Paz, Paul Scholtz, David Geist, Sam Kreidenweis, Chris Foss, and Samuel Green.

Night Ranger Performs at Warehouse Live Rock Legends Night Ranger will be performing this month at Warehouse live on Saturday, February 23rd with opening acts Love N War and Johnny Solinger. Doors for this show are at 7:00pm, and the show goes on at 8:00 pm. This is an all ages show. We’ll see you there. With more than 17 Million albums sold worldwide, over 3500 live performances, and a radio audience that exceeds 1 Billion. Night Ranger has both epitomized and transcended the arena rock sound and style well beyond that era. With multiple songs that have significantly impacted popular culture, Night Ranger continue to expand their evergrowing fan-base. The band is proof that powerful songs, plus accomplished musicians is the perfect formula for continued success. Night Ranger have earned widespread acclaim, that includes multi-platinum and gold album status while leaving their indelible mark on the music charts with a string of best-selling albums (Dawn Patrol, Midnight Madness, 7 Wishes, Big Life and Man In Motion). Their popularity is fueled by an impressive string of instantly recognizable hit singles and signature album tracks, including legendary titles such as “Sister Christian”, “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me”, “When You Close Your Eyes”, the anthemic “(You Can Still) Rock In America”, along with “Sentimental Street”, “Goodbye”, “Sing Me Away”, and “Four in the Morning”. Over the years, the band’s music has made notable contributions to and been featured in many different areas of media and popular culture. The band was one of the first big “video” bands on MTV, with over ten number one hit videos. Night Ranger songs can be heard in TV Shows like, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, American Dad, Glee, Grey’s Anatomy, Parks & Recreation. The band have also had music featured in video games such as, Rock Band, Guitar Hero and Grand Theft Auto, plus hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages, the Oscar-Nominated film Boogie Page 4 - Music News Febuary 2019

Nights, and other feature films such as Friday the 13th, Teachers, Sixteen Candles, and The Secret of My Success. Night Ranger can also be heard throughout JBL’s “Hear The Truth” brand campaign. Night Ranger is Jack Blades (bass, vocals), Kelly Keagy (drums, vocals), Brad Gillis (lead & rhythm guitars), Eric Levy (keyboards) and Keri Kelli (lead & rhythm guitars). Night Ranger is best known for “Sister Christian,” a 1984 single that reached the Top 10 in the U.S. and Canada that later turned into a power ballad perennial. Prior to “Sister Christian,” Night Ranger had a pair of major hits on American Album Rock radio. These included “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” and “(You Can Still) Rock in America”, but the success of “Sister Christian” helped push them in a pop-friendly direction which they rode through the end of the ’80s, racking up a few hits along the way (“Sentimental Street,” “Goodbye”). The band split in 1989 but in 1996 the original lineup reunited and, over the next two decades, the group would survive various changes in membership, touring regularly and recording occasionally. Diary of a Madman founding members Brad Gillis (guitar) and Jack Blades (bass) first met while playing in Rubicon, a group led by Jerry Martini of Sly & the Family Stone that spent its time alternating between funk and soft pop in the vein of Chicago. Rubicon had a hit in 1978 with “I’m Gonna Take Care of Everything” but split after a second album in 1979. Gillis and Blades recruited Rubicon touring drummer Kelly Keagy for their new rock-oriented project. Soon, the trio expanded, with ex-Montrose keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald and guitarist Jeff Watson and began playing the Bay Area under the name Stereo, which swiftly became Ranger. By 1982, the group signed to Boardwalk Records but by the time of their debut, Dawn Patrol, at the end of the year, they renamed themselves Night Ranger in order to distance themselves from a country band

that shared a similar name. During the brief time between signing with Boardwalk and the release of Dawn Patrol, Brad Gillis filled in for the late Randy Rhoads on Ozzy Osbourne’s Diary of a Madman tour; he can be heard on the Speak of the Devil live album. Dawn Patrol generated a rock radio hit in “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me,” but Boardwalk folded after the album’s release, so Night Ranger headed to MCA’s subsidiary Camel. In the fall of 1983, the band released Midnight Madness. Its lead single “(You Can Still) Rock in America” was another AOR hit but “Sister Christian,” a power ballad written by Keagy, turned into Night Ranger’s breakthrough, climbing all the way to five on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1984. “When You Close Your Eyes,” its successor, reached 14 at the end of 1984. Night Ranger followed Midnight Madness in the summer of 1985 with 7 Wishes, an album preceded by the power ballad “Sentimental Street.” The single reached eight on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Four in the Morning (I Can’t Take Anymore)” peaking at 19 and “Goodbye” topping out at 17. Night Ranger recorded the theme song for Michael J. Fox’s 1987 comedy The Secret of My Success, which also served as the first single from their 1987 album Big Life. This was their first record not produced by Paul Glasser and it represented a shift to a softer sound. Man in Motion arrived in 1988 and “I Did It for Love,” the record’s first single, made it to 16 on Billboard’s Rock Singles chart. Neverland followed in 1997 and in 1998 they released Seven. In 2007 Night Ranger returned with their next album, Hole In the Sun. Somewhere in California, their tenth studio album, appeared on Frontiers in 2011, followed by High Road in 2014 and Don’t Let Up in 2017. The band continues to be a very popular act and tours regularly.

Reverend Horton Heat Performs at the House of Blues

The Reverend, aka the Reverend Horton Heat will be performing this month in Houston at The House of Blues on February 22. He is touring in support of his new Victory Records release, Whole New Life. “I’m afraid I’m on the Willie Nelson retirement program, which means I’ll never retire,” promises Jim Heath, sounding every inch a Texan. By day, Jim Heath is a mild-mannered musical historian well-versed in the birthing days of rock and roll. But when the sun goes down, he straps on his signature Gretsch 6120, steps up to the mike and is transformed into Reverend Horton Heat, a hellfire-spewing, rock and roll dare-demon. Jim’s tome is iconic: From recording with Lemmy Kilmister, being revered by country music legends like Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, touring with Soundgarden, ZZ Top, The Cramps, Social Distortion, White Zombie and the Sex Pistols (a young Lydon was connected to Jim’s original 1985 demo), to providing touring opps to upstarts Kyuss, Hank III, Marilyn Manson and countless others across decades on the road. Heath and longtime confidant and slapbass general Jimbo Wallace have polished up their 12th release, Whole New Life, which Heath calls “the most positive material I have ever written. It focuses heavily on rock and roll but there is a human interest parallel - songs about growing up poor, vices, marriage, having children and walking the rapturous streets of America.” Call it a new twist on an old sound, Whole New Life was recorded between Fun Guy Studios and Modern Electric in the band’s hometown of Dallas. The eleven track rumination features new sticksman Arjuna ‘RJ’ Contreras. The Texas based jazz pupil came to the bands attention from a friend’s reference in the summer of 2017, and brought a whole new backbeat to the legendary rockabilly administration. After clicking with Contreras, Heath hired a new pianist in 2018, Matt Jordan, to flesh out the sound with the pomp and power of Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. “I love playing with these guys, it truly is a whole new band, so the title fits perfectly.” Recording the album, Heath recalled that “Back in the 1950’s, reverb chambers were really hip and I always loved their warmth. I’m all about Sam Phillips and the things he did with tape machines and tape echo. I love that kind of production value, even if it is older than me! It really sent me to this whole other headspace where I worked with a lot of vintage gear on this album - some of which I built myself for a truly unique sound - ribbon, old tube microphones, pre-amps and stuff. Additionally, a year before I started piecing this together I worked especially hard on my singing voice. Whole New Life brought out something in me where I am screaming more and making more throaty sounds. It’s got some Louisiana feel to it, a bit of gruff and some Roy Orbison style in it. We tested out new tracks on our most recent tour and they are working better with the audience than any new songs we premiered since the early days of the band.” “This tour started around 1986,” Heath chuckles dryly Reverend Horton Heat still performs nearly 200 shows annually, including their trademark Horton’s Hayride Festival in Southern California, which has expanded to an endof-the-year jamboree under the name Horton’s Holiday Hayride. The band has also wowed soldout crowds with their multi-city residencies across America, including performances at Coachella, Reading, Austin City Limits, Riot Fest and countless other festivals. The Texas troubadours also took a unique approach to the term ‘Special Guests’ on recent tours. Recalling the time the band opened for Jerry Lee Lewis, Heath had a vision, “The idea of playing in Jerry’s backing band would have been pretty neat. So every once in a while we’ll have a load of fun putting that aspect in our live set. In the middle of our set, we’ll have a special guest come on stage for a mini-set where Reverend Horton Heat is the backing band. The first time we did it was with Lemmy Kilmister. We stopped our set midway, the road crew dragged a Marshall amp on stage, wiped the Rickenbacker clean and out came Lem. He was adamant on playing deep cuts, but I fought tooth and nail with him to do ‘Ace Of

Spades.’ I told him, ‘Lemmy, we must do this song, we have to give the people want they want.’ He took a drag of his smoke, looked me square in the eye, and said ‘Never give them what they want, give them what they need!’” With over 1 million albums sold and nearly 35 years in the game, Heath and company have been delivering blood-pressure inducing scriptures to millions of fans worldwide. Call it rock and roll, psychobilly or what have you, Reverend Horton Heat is often considered an early architect of the latter genre (at least on this side of the Atlantic) and occupies a peculiar place in American musical terrain.

MUSIC NEWS Trampled by Turtles will be performing at White Oak Music Hall on March 2. Over the last 15 years, Trampled by Turtles have become a phenomenon, gaining a cult-like following with their signature blend of rock, folk, punk, country, and their own unique take on progressive bluegrass. Undoubtedly, the band’s charm sparks from how dynamic they are. While their songs are musically upbeat, frontman Dave Simonett’s lyrics are poignant, deeply expressive, and sometimes gut-wrenching; two factors that combined, make for a live show that is affecting, emotional, and powerful enough to transfer the energy from the stage to the crowd. The band made their triumphant return with their first new music in four years, Life Is Good On the Open Road. The Minnesota sextet began working on the new album in a cabin late last year, the same weekend of the horrific Las Vegas shooting and Tom Petty’s untimely passing. Bonding over the tragedy and loss of a major musical influence, the guys were inspired to create the 12 compelling new songs. Life Is Good On The Open Road spans from tender ballads to driving boot-stompers, sometimes even on the same track, and includes some of the group’s finest work thus far. Trampled by Turtles hit the road this year and were greeted by their devoted fan base in what has become their most successful year yet —including a record-breaking show with over 10,000 people in attendance at Bayfront Festival Park in their hometown of Duluth, Minnesota, a sold-out performance with nearly 15,000 at the Minnesota State Fair, and selling out multiple nights in venues in major cities like Seattle, D.C., Nashville, and Chicago. Each show is an experience where the band is able to showcase their individual talent as well as their collective, mesmerizing ability to layer harmonies with varied instrumentation. For an idea of how their unparalleled talent translates in person, check out this recent video from their live performance on KEXP. Life Is Good On the Open Road has received praise from Billboard, Paste, Relix, No Depression, The Bluegrass Situation, and Rolling Stone Country, who said, “It balances both delicate ballads and loose, upbeat romps, with

Trampled By Turtles Perform At White Oak Music Hall frontman Dave Simonett’s strident voice connecting the dots.” In the immortal words of Tom Petty, “You belong somewhere you feel free.” For the Duluth, Minnesota sextet Trampled by Turtles, finding that freedom meant taking a risky approach; rather than continuing full speed ahead with a band that had been successfully touring, writing, and recording music together for the past 15 years, they pumped the breaks and brought the tour bus screeching to a halt. By the time Trampled by Turtles announced their hiatus in the fall of 2016, the success they’d experienced as a band could only be described as a phenomenon. They’d had multiple albums climb the Billboard charts, with two reaching the No. 1 spot on the Bluegrass charts and one topping the Folk chart; they’d appeared

on The Late Show with David Letterman twice; and they’d performed at nearly every major festival in the U.S. and Canada, from Coachella to Bonnarroo, Lollapalooza, and the Newport Folk Festival, pulling in huge and adoring crowds with their breakneck string performances and heartfelt, sometimes gut-wrenching lyrics. After all that time traveling together in close quarters and commanding festival and club stages around the country, the six musicians who make up Trampled by Turtles — Dave Simonett, Tim Saxhaug, Dave Carroll, Erik Berry, Ryan Young, and Eamonn McLain — went nearly a year without all being in the same room. Simonett, the band’s lead singer and songwriter, released a critically acclaimed and highly personal album, Furnace, with his band Dead Man Winter. Other members kept busy with their own side projects in the Twin Cities and their hometown of Duluth, Minnesota, allowing new musical ideas to grow. By the time the six musicians arranged to get together at banjo player Dave Carroll’s cabin for a meeting in October 2017, there was a pressing question on everyone’s minds: Would the magic that first united them around rapid-fire string music in the early 2000s still remain? Would they still feel like a band? “Trampled’s going to get together on a little retreat to see if we all still like each other,” jokes mandolin player Erik Berry, reflecting on that pivotal cabin weekend. “But I don’t want to build up the suspense and fear too much, because quite frankly it was really comfortable and enjoyable. We hung out and made meals together, had some beers together, played some cards, watched the Twins lose to the Yankees, and played some music.” Their meeting at the cabin came at an unusually emotional time. It was the day that the country learned about the tragic mass shooting at a Las Vegas festival that injured hundreds of music fans, and the day that one of the group’s shared musical heroes, Tom Petty, passed away.

“We started cracking beers and hanging out, and all of a sudden it was like, holy shit,” Simonett recalls. “So we went down by the lake and brought a speaker and a bottle of whiskey, and just sat and listened to like six Tom Petty records straight. It felt good as a band to be sharing in that. Somebody we had all admired so much musically, that we could kind of bond over.” Within an hour of converging at the cabin, instrument cases were opened and ideas were passed around. By the second day of their retreat, Trampled went live on Facebook with a performance of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers,” with the lyrics speaking poignantly to the time they’d spent apart. And by the end of the week, they were already workshopping a handful of new songs that Simonett had written, and firming up dates at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, to record their next record. “I think a little break was really good,” says Simonett. “I started to miss the guys, and playing music with them. I think everybody kind of felt that way after we got some space, so it was really healthy. We were like, hey, we should make a record — and the feeling was really casual and there was no pressure at all. We were able to do it in a way that kind of felt like 15 years ago.” Tracking for their new album, Life is Good on the Open Road, was completed in just six days at Pachyderm and mixed the following week. The band produced the album themselves with the help of Pachyderm’s house engineer, Nick Tveitbakk, recording everything live to tape. Life is Good on the Open Road is the sound of freedom washing over the group like a sunrise, a new day rising. When discussing the album, both Simonett and Berry toyed with the phrase “return to form,” suggesting that it captures something pure and essential about the Trampled by Turtles sound. “Tim said something kind of interesting – he said, ‘This is the most Trampled by Turtles record we’ve ever made,’” says Berry. “He’s right.” The band weaves their instruments together like a seamless tapestry, laying down a bed that seems to float underneath Simonett’s expressive voice. Each song seems to tell its own story, from tales of nights gone wrong to love that’s been lost and dreams that need chasing, and the group shifts in unison from tender ballads to barn burning hair-raisers, sometimes in the same song. Simonett’s lyrics, which have grown ever sharper over the years, occasionally rise up to shoot an arrow directly through the heart. “I’ve been moving logs just to keep the fire burning / My voice is gone but the band wants to play,” he sighs on “Right Back Where We Started,” while the title track offers pure poetry: “Run so fast through the fields in May / I forgot what I had to say / I’ve never been through a harder day / Than the one that left your ghost here.” Although no songs directly address the band’s time apart, there are metaphors that speak to the experience of putting Trampled by Turtles to bed and waking it back up again. As the band prepares to swing back into action, perhaps there’s no better line to summarize their return than on that title track, “Life is Good on the Open Road”: “The light inside you comes and goes / But it never really goes out.”

John 5 Performs at The Scout Bar March 3

John 5 and The Creatures - comprised of world-renowned guitarist JOHN 5, bassist Ian Ross and drummer Logan Miles Nix - will release a brand new full-length studio album in 2019! John 5 recently teased the album, entitled Invasion, on New Year’s Day 2019 by way of a brand new music video for the new track “Zoinks!” JOHN 5 also posted a teaser of the video featuring behind-the-scenes footage via his YouTube channel. In the tradition of Scooby Doo and Groovie Goolies, the “Zoinks!” video features an innovative blend of classic 2D hand drawn animation, 3D computer generated imagery and live action. The video is written and directed by Disney animator Brett Broggs (Frozen, WreckIt Ralph), with live footage shot by Matt Zane. The video also features the voice acting talents of Nikki Sixx, Susan Olsen (known for her role as Cindy Brady on The Brady Bunch), and Fred Coury. Coury also is credited for scoring the video alongside John 5. The official release date for Invasion will be announced in 2019.Invasion was produced and mixed by Barry Pointer, and will be released via a series of music videos, just as John 5 released his 2017 studio release, Season of the Witch. In celebration of the upcoming album, John 5 and The Creatures will kick off the second leg of their North American Invasion Tour on February 22, 2019 in Anaheim, CA with a stop at The Scout Bar in Webster on March 3rd. The tour will feature support from blues-rock guitarist Jared James Nichols. Tickets and VIP packages are available now via www.john5.com/store. John 5 has worked with a varied range of artists, performing as guitarist for some of the biggest headlining rock bands in the world such as Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson, as well as playing session with Paul Stanley, Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. Slash has called John 5, “one of the most mind-blowing guitarists around” and Rob Zombie has dubbed him “a fucking shredder”. John 5 has released seven solo albums to date, as well as a remix album, and has written music for the likes of Avril Lavigne, Garbage, Ricky Martin and others. Season Of The Witch follows his previous solo work, Careful With That Axe, which debuted on the Billboard Heatseekers chart upon release in 2014. Born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and picking up a guitar at the tender age of seven, John Lowery was given the nickname John 5 the day he joined Marilyn Manson’s band. A versatile session guitarist known for his speed as well as his keen goth fashion sense (imagine Brandon Lee in The Crow), after moving to L.A. at 18 he scored high-profile gigs touring with Lita Ford and k.d. lang based on his work scoring soundtracks and commercials with producer Bob Marlette. Studio work continued, as he contributed to ex-Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford’s industrial metal group Two and ex-Van Halen singer/showboat David Lee Roth’s The DLR Band album. Initially rejected in his first audition to play guitar with Manson, John was asked to join Manson on the Rock Is Dead tour, following guitarist Zim Zum’s departure. Two albums were completed with Manson, Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) and The Golden Age of Grotesque, before John 5 left to pursue a solo career. His debut record, Vertigo, was released in 2004, and that year he founded Loser, a more radio-friendly band, with vocalist Joe Grah of Jibe. His second album, Songs for Sanity, followed in 2005, just as he paired up with White Zombie’s Rob Zombie for Ozzfest. John contributed to the majority of songs on Zombie’s 2006 release, Educated Horses, and decided to disband Loser to tour with Zombie for the next year. His third outing, Devil Knows My Name, gained recognition from a guitarworld.com reader’s poll, awarding him with Best Shred Album of the Year. With albums by Rob Zombie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Filter in the works, June of 2008 marked his fourth release, Requiem, which was promoted with a West Coast tour of the Guitar Center retail music chain. After recording Hellbilly Deluxe 2 with Zombie, Lowery returned to writing instrumentals, and The Art of Malice

followed in May of 2010. He followed up in 2012 with God Told Me So, which featured both acoustic and electric songs, as well as a cover of the Michael Jackson hit “Beat It.” In 2014, John 5 released Careful With That Axe. John 5 described the album as having “a real live band sound” that covers a broad spectrum of different music genre. The track “This Is My Rifle” is a tribute to Al Di Meola, while “El Cucuy” is a tribute to Spanish flamenco guitar music. “Jerry’s Breakdown” and “Jiffy Jam” are both cover songs of Jerry Reed, a musician John 5 was familiar with due to his father listening to his albums as a child. Next came Season of The Witch in 2017, followed by It’s Alive in 2018. His new album, Invasion is scheduled to be released sometime this year.

MUSIC NEWS

Dwight Yoakam Performs at the Arena Theatre Feb. 15 The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, or bluer in this case, which may be why Dwight Yoakam hadn’t thought of doing a bluegrass album over the years. It was always already implicit in his music, from “Miner’s Prayer” on his first album 30 years ago to his one-off collaborations with Ralph Stanley and Earl Scruggs. If you listened hard, you could even hear that strain of mountain music in the melodies and harmonic sense of his most rockedout country hits. He wasn’t consciously thinking through the years that he could bust out the mandolins to confirm his Kentucky bona fides – “Melodically, it’s just part of my nature,” Yoakam says, “part of the birthright, I guess, in my DNA.” Yet here he is, releasing Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars… in the same year that he is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.. Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars… harks back to that landmark debut in its obviously cheeky title, while otherwise looking even farther back by recasting some of Yoakam’s most classic songs in a style that not only predates cowpunk but antecedes his beloved Bakersfield sound. Yoakam even remakes “Guitars, Cadillacs” in the style of “Man of Constant Sorrow.” No one is ever going to mistake a star so renowned for favoring snug jeans with a Soggy Bottom Boy, but here, he clinches his status as at least an honorary Clinch Mountain lad. “And then Chris Lord-Alge, who has mixed my last 2 studio albums, entered the picture in LA and agreed to add a further edge of Beggars Banquet-esque rock and roll mystique, completing the journey with a masterfully unique sonic framing of the entire project. I believe it was the first bluegrass album that Chris has ever mixed. “It was part of Alison Krauss’ Union Station band colliding with the remnants of the Soggy Bottom band,” says Yoakam, talking about the four days of band tracking he did in Nashville and April with a group of acoustic all-stars he’d never worked with before. The ensemble included guitarist Bryan Sutton, fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Barry Bales, mandolin player Adam Steffey, and banjo player Scott Vestal, under the production oversight of Gary Paczosa (another Krauss veteran) and Jon Randall

(the co-writer of country hits like “Whiskey Lullaby”). “And then I threw, I guess, a hillbilly version of the Beach Boys at it with my harmony vocals. That core bunch of players there in Nashville for those four days was a really fortuitous vortex, with those guys responding to what I wanted to do and me saying, ‘Look, let’s leave it loose and ragged at times.’ Rock and roll got some of its swagger from bluegrass. Let’s go back there and show some of that swagger if we can.” Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars… started as, if not an assignment, at least a suggestion, and one he readily took to once he found the right recording window. “Kevin Welk had asked my managers a couple years ago if I would do a bluegrass album for his then-label Vanguard/Sugar Hill,” Yoakam says. “Subsequently they merged with Concord Music Group, which owned Rounder, and it became that entire music company, and they came back to us again this year. At the first ask, I had been in the middle of doing Second Hand Heart,” his 2015 return to the Warner Bros. Records stable from which he sprang three decades ago. “Cameron Strang, who runs Warners, graciously allowed me to take this year off in terms of delivering my next studio album for them (Warner) to do this project, because he knew it was a passion project for me.” The original idea was to make it a covers album, before it ended up being an album of Dwight Yoakam covers, with one notable exception – a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” “But when Gary and JR (Randall) came to do a meeting with me, they said, ‘You know, we started listening to your catalog, and we found songs where we thought, “Wow, that was never a single. Nobody ever heard that. Should we do that with him?”’ I let them come to me with titles that they liked. I didn’t really pick; they did. And we ended up with 11 tracks that had been on my earlier albums, but only two of them, ‘Guitars, Cadillacs’ and ‘Please, Please Baby,’ were ever hits. Only one other song had even been a single, ‘These Arms,’ and it didn’t crack the top 30. So I don’t know if ‘obscure’ is the word for these songs —people that had my albums have come across them — but they’re the tracks that were songs

less traveled.” The bluegrass influence “has always kind of been, as Glenn Frey would say, whispering in my other ear,” Yoakam says. Some of the signposts: In 1997, Yoakam recorded a cover of the Clash’s “Train in Vain” with Dr. Ralph Stanley on banjo and harmonies. On the Earl Scruggs and Friendsalbum in 2001, Yoakam co-wrote and sang “Borrowed Love” with another one of the genre’s great banjo players. In the mid-2000s, Yoakam started introducing a bluegrass-style acoustic rave-up mini-set in the middle of his otherwise electrified shows. And it’s been a mutual love affair. The influence he had on bluegrass himself was palpable, most obviously with the release of a Pickin’ on Dwight Yoakam bluegrass tribute album. Just this July, the group Flatt Lonesome was nominated for an International Bluegrass Music Award for Best Song for their cover of Yoakam’s “You’re the One.” But the seed for Yoakam going a little bit more bluegrass himself, outside the realms of duets and tributes? “In deference to his recent passing, I need to mention that the first person who ever mentioned it to me was Ralph Stanley,” Yoakam says. “In the early ‘90s, I went in and recorded with Ralph

around two Neumann microphones with the live bluegrass band that was the Clinch Mountain Boys at that time. He invited me to be his guest on his double album Saturday Night, Sunday Morning. And he looked at me after we finished doing ‘Miner’s Prayer’ and said, ‘Me and the band think you ought to think about being a bluegrass singer.’ I said, ‘Well, I guess my birth certificate gives me some credentials to own the holler that I was living in the first couple years of my life, and musically express that.’ Being born into rural southeast Kentucky there in Pike County, which is just across the Virginia state line from the area of the Clinch Mountains where the Stanley Brothers and the Carter Family came out of, maybe it was inevitable. But, having said that, let’s wait a minute and — wee doggies! – see what we did to it.” Wee doggies, indeed. The principal tracks for Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars… were recorded at Zac Brown’s studio in Nashville, Southern Ground (formerly Fred Foster’s Monument Records home, memorialized in Dave Grohl’s recent documentary visit to the nation’s great recording stu

Punk Rock Stacy Benefit at Rudyard’s British Pub The Punk Rock Stacy Benefit at Rudyard’s British Pub was a huge success. A lot of band showed up to show their support and perform. Among them were Project Grimm, Slow Future, Cactus Flower, Only Beast, Whorehound, The Velostacks, Poor Dumb Bastards, Killer Hearts, The Satanic Overlords of Rock and Roll, and more. We dropped by there for two evenings of entertainment for the three night benefit and saw Killer Hearts (top left) and the Poor Dumb Bastards (top right). In addition to the live entertainment they also featured a silent auction that brought in a fair amount of money. While the Punk Rock Stacy Benefit was a success, it pains us to tell you that unfortunately Punk Rock Stacy (Stacy Hartoon) lost her battle for survival and passed on the following weekend. I really don’t know what to say, except that Stacy will definitely be missed by her parents, friends, the folks at Rudyard’s and the many bands she worked with at the club. We will miss her greatly ourselves.

25 Years of Livin’ the Blues 5731 KIRBY • HOUSTON, TEXAS • 713-523-9999 Cycles Performs at Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar We out in the newly remodeled back yard and patio at The Last Concert Cafe to see the band Cycles from Denver, Colorado. Cycles epitomize the power-trio format with ripping guitar, fat bass grooves played out through furious slapping, and dynamic drum beats flowing over intricate tempo changes. Each member wields a unique take on their instrument that when played together, forms a truly fresh and cohesive sound. Patrick Harvey commands the guitar with speed and precision reminiscent of Jimmy Herring while using his loop pedal virtually as its own instrument, a skill unique only to him. Michael Wood has subtly forged a drum style that showcases his rare ability to mashup funky hip-hop beats with frenzied rock riffs and only displays flashy technique when necessary while implementing the creative use of various soundmodulating drum triggers. At the heart of the band lies Tucker McClung’s dominant slap-bass chops that captivates audiences and pumps the musical blood through the band. Their show at The Last Concert this night was really entertaining and really topped our evening off with some great entertainment. They have some great songs. In fact, we really enjoyed everything they performed this evening. We hope to see them again when they swing down this way, hopefully back at the Last Concert Cafe again. In the meantime, we’re going to have to be satisfied with just rematching the two videos we have posted here on HMNTV Houston Music News Television for you to watch. Hold On Hollwood

Photo by Henry Santos By Amber Fox Remarkably talented, incredibly humble and some of the most genuine guys you’ll ever meet. Houston’s own musician bad-asses have made a huge entrance here in the music scene and only plan on growing more successful. The band consists of four guys: Ian Dartez - lead vocals and guitarist, Nick Dees- Lead Guitarist and back up vocals, Devin Holden- Drums and Corey Morgan- Bass. The charisma and chemistry this particular group of guys all have together is nothing short of marvelous. They might as well be reading each others minds because that is exactly how in tune they are with one another. Working together comes so natural to them and it shows in their presence on and off stage. Hold on Hollywood came to be in 2014, meeting through mutual friends and affiliations with the same venues, more specifically BFE Rock Club on an open mic night. Knowing each other since a young age, even though Corey met the others later on in his life, all four boys hit it off and have amazing chemistry together. Almost immediately the group started the plan to bring Hold On Hollywood into existence. Practicing routinely all while becoming best friends, the band debut in their first live appearance at BFE Rock Club On April 24th, 2015 almost selling out the show! A packed house welcomed the newly arranged band and things only took off for them from there. After about a year long hiatus, on March 23rd of 2018, Hold On Hollywood finally got their big break! They entered a contest with the Rod Ryan Show of 94.5 the buzz. The rules were to submit a music video of an original song and this is when Hold On Hollywood sent in their now huge hit, “The Chase.” To their surprise, they made it into the top 10 and from there it came down to fans, friends and family to vote in order for them to have a chance at winning. When the news came in Hold On Hollywood was shocked! They had won the contest and were now going to open up for the global icon Bon Jovi himself!

The city of Houston had shown their support and love for the band and pushed them into the winning spot giving Hold On Hollywood their first largely publicized show and putting them on the map. On the 23rd of March in 2018, the show was held at the Toyota Center, which holds over 18,000 people. Not only was this the largest show the band had ever played, but it also rewarded them with their song “The Chase” being put into rotation on the radio with 94.5 The Buzz and Establishing a relationship with Rod Ryan and Elliot Wood of 94.5 The Buzz. Since the boys were now a huge success here in Houston by establishing a relationship with The Buzz and having their original song played on the radio daily, it was only natural that they were invited by The Buzz to play at the Bud Light Roast. This is a huge local rock show that The Buzz puts on yearly. This particular year happened to have national bands such as Theory of a Dead man, AWOLNATION, Robert Delong, and Blue October playing at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. On July 21st of 2018, Hold on Hollywood joined these huge headlining acts at the Bud Light Roast playing at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for their first time ever and securing their future here in Houston by officially playing 2 of the largest venues this city has to offer musicians within just a 4 month span of time! Just 3 short months later on October 27th of 2018, Hold on Hollywood played at one of the most iconic rock festivals Houston has to offer, Buzzfest! Our Houston boys played right along side of national headlining acts such as The Struts, Puddle of Mudd, Mike Shinoda, Dirty Heads, Chevelle and A Perfect Circle. All four guys agree that this particular show meant an enormous deal to them personally and also sealed their future in the industry as being new and upcoming music icons on their way towards national fame. For Corey, this was a show he had been looking forward to playing his whole life. Buzzfest was not only one of Devin’s favorite

shows; it was also his first time ever attending Buzzfest all together! Imagine the first time playing at your largest local rock festival and it also being the first time you have ever even attended in general! Humble is a word the band kept using to describe the experience. Not only did they rock the stage at Buzzfest with some iconic national bands right along side them, Hold on Hollywood made sure to take the time to meet their fans, get to know them personally, and enjoyed everything Buzzfest had to offer while hanging out with the people of Houston. The guys from Hold on Hollywood are incredibly down to earth, genuinely caring and the sweetest people you’ll meet. The most important part of being in a band according to Hold on Hollywood is their interactions with the fans. The guys are truly humbled by the reaction, support and loyalty from their fans. So much in fact that Nick Dees clarified “I don’t like using the term ‘fans,’ I prefer to use ‘family.’ That’s what I feel like we are building here.” Corey following with “fans become family and friends and those are the people you see at every show.” The members in the band Hold on Hollywood are not just musicians; they are stand up guys here in the Houston community and never forget to make a difference in the lives of others and those who may need a welcoming hand. The band knows what it means to their growing Houston “family” when they take the extra time to show some care and respect for the people who follow Hold on Hollywood. The guys know what it feels like when their idols do the same for them therefor Hold on Hollywood would never miss out on a chance to meet people who love their music. When it comes down to it, the members of Hold on Hollywood are just like us and enjoy things like food/cooking, console/PC gaming, and just relaxing or laughing with friends when given the chance. Since 2018 was so jam-packed and full of huge concerts for Hold on Hollywood to perform in, it doesn’t seem like they got to rest very much.

In fact, 2019 is looking busy in this bands future also! Hold on Hollywood has already shown off some of their matured, new music sound in their song “second favorite word” and received tons of positive feedback about it. 2019 has a lot in store for everyone because Hold on Hollywood plans on releasing even more new content such as EP/s, music videos, and new national tour dates hopefully! The band is working hard in the studio on new songs at the moment; they have been having a creative “binge writing” type of life lately. Hold on Hollywood has never been so focused and pumping out the new songs flawlessly. Be prepared for a more well-seasoned and matured Hold on Hollywood. While everyone is waiting anxiously for the release of new music from Hold on Hollywood, it is possible to catch a show and see them live! Their first Houston show of 2019 will be at District 249 on February 16th. Hold on Hollywood will be the headlining that show and are very excited about their first Houston show coming up! Special guests Erase the Virus, Key Flight Captains and Collective Mindz will accompany Hold on Hollywood. Tickets are on sale right now for the District 249 show and are $10.00 a piece. You will regret missing this show, so it is worth it to mark you calendar and venture out to District 249 to see Hold on Hollywood’s first hometown show of the year. The band has a few other cool shows lined up as of now such as Bond’s Rock Bar in San Antonio on March 8th, always a good time. Wildcatters in Katy TX on March 9th will be coming right after their show at Bond’s Rock Bar. On April 26th Hold on Hollywood will be playing with Hinder at the Bikes on the Bayou event. Tickets go on sale February 1st for the Bikes on the Bayou show. All of these shows and more are listed on the bands web page www.Holdonhollywood.com and you can also find more information on the band and shows if you visit their Facebook page at

Kissing Judas To Record New Live Album at the BFE Rock Club On March 1st, Houston metal/rock band Kissing Judas invite you to BFE Rock Club where they will be recording their live CD/DVD. Over the last year, they have been performing live while opening for acts such as Stephen Pearcy of Ratt, Ace Frehley, Puddle Of Mudd and many more as well as playing many of their own shows with local bands who have all become like family. In July, they changed their name from Kyle Cousins Band to Kissing Judas, revamped their sound, image and wrote over a dozen new songs. They embarked on a trip to Colorado with their friends Twelve Years Driven to test out the water and it was an incredible experience. Instead of going in the studio and recording a cd, guitarist and manager Dave Sullivan decided to record a live CD as well as DVD. Dave Sullivan tells us that “We always put on a fun and entertaining show. I wanted to share that experience with those who may not get a chance to see us live. When talking to the crews who will be working on this, I was told we will multi-track it and be able to do overdubs just like the studio. I said no way to overdubs. I want it raw and live. What you see and hear is what you get when you come to one of our shows. Zits and all. If there is a mistake, I’m keeping it in. If I wanted to do a live album with massive overdubs, I’d name it Kiss Alive 5 haha, no offense to Kiss. The multi tracking is for mixing tracks and tweaking the levels and eq. Our friends Tame Fury and Dallas’ Break My Fall will be playing this show with us.”

Dwight Yoakam

continued from page 12 dios). Later, Yoakam cut vocals at Hollywood’s Capitol Studios, where he’s done most of his albums, as well as the former A&M Records lot (now Henson Studios) and East West (formerly United Western, where Pet Sounds was cut). These are all “very historic” places, but “it wasn’t just for shits and grins. It was for the purpose of gathering the magic out of those rooms.” In one sense, Yoakam wanted to be as faithful to the original traditions as possible, and in another, to mess with those just a little. “I was very strident about exacting a colloquial expression from the guys when they sang along with me,” he says — and the music reaches its “hardcore” peak when Jonathan Clarke sings a bass background vocal on “Home for Sale.” But a song like “Listen” “lent itself to a moment of departure,” where Yoakam was able to “reinterpret west coast sounds” in the vocal stacking. “It’s really a composite of disparate elements that coalesce in this,” he says. “Country-rock was born when Chris Hillman, who was a bluegrass mandolin player, took Clarence White, who came out of hardcore bluegrass, into the Byrds’ circle on the album before Sweethearts of the Rodeo. So there’s this west coast bluegrass contingent that still echoes in my head — that whole sort of Byrds/ Beach Boys thing colliding with mountain culture.” That’s where the title comes in. “It’s tongue in cheek,” he says, “because the album started in Nashville, and ended up in… well, you know, California is the place you oughta be!” He might sound Beverly Hillbillies flippant in saying that, but underneath the jibing, there’s a real sense of history in how Yoakam sees California’s role even in bluegrass. “I thought, well, I’m gonna give a wink back to everybody, to Flatt and Scruggs and Jimmy Martin and everybody who came out here. And this album really is that hybrid expression of a journey — and it’s the American journey. It’s the Dust Bowl ‘30s era blowing colloquial music out to California with all the Okie/Arkie/Texan migrants. Folks from Kansas and Nebraska and the plains all ended up out here and brought with ‘em their cultural elements. Without that, you don’t have Buck Owens out here, and you don’t have Merle Haggard, perhaps, in the way that we knew him.” And without them, you certainly don’t have the man many of us consider the reigning king of California country, Dwight Yoakam. Whether it’s in purple or blue mode, the new album is “something that I’m really glad I took the time I didn’t have to do,” Yoakam laughs. Simultaneously to working on the album and keeping his usual demanding touring schedule, Yoakam was being attentive to his other career, acting, I’m shooting a TV series called Goliath with Billy Bob Thornton, William Hurt and Maria Bello, from producer David E. Kelley. He’s in seven of the show’s eight episodes, which begin airing on Amazon Oct. 13. He says Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars… has been gratifying partly “because the songs feel new for me,” and partly because of the proper salute he was finally able to give bluegrass. “I hope we did justice to the legacy of that genre and kept the spirit of reckless abandon,” Yoakam says. “When you look back on the ‘30s and ‘40s, the bluegrassers were considered the wild men in music —Bluegrass was rock and roll, before there was such an animal. Hopefully we have that spirit in this.”
