September 2021 Hello Music News readers. I hope everybody had a great July. It’s great to see that things are starting to return to normal. There are so many concerts coming, it’s unbelievable. I knew it would be coming, but the list of shows are awesome. Here’s a few more: Hall & Oates, Maroon 5, Shinedown, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, The Monkees, Eric Clalpton, 38 Special, Alice Cooper, Ace Frehley, Slaughter, Kix, and many, many more! I don’t know about you, but I’m going to be going to as many of these shows as I can. I have over a year’s worth of concert withdrawl to take care of. If you see me there, wave and smile. I’m sure we’re going to have a blast! Now, on to the new issue. In this issue, as usual, we have some great stories and information to pass on to you. Shinedown Returns To Houston, Tuesday, September 28th For One Night Only at Smart Financial Centre By Kevin Wildman Atlantic Records recording artists Shinedown will be returning to Houston this month for one night only at Smart Financial Center on September 28th. This show will be close to the end of their tour, which started out on August 5th at the Mississippi Valley Fair. This tour herald’s the band’s return to the big stage where they have been performing since the release of their first album, Leave A Whisper in 2003. The last time we saw this Platinum selling band on tour was right after their 2019 Attention Attention World Tour. I would advise getting your tickets as soon as possible for this show if you don’t have them already because it’s very likely to be a sellout. This chart-topping band has been selling arenas everywhere they have been performing and this show is reported to be their biggest and best production yet. We got our hands on one of their setlists, and let me tell you, this is going to be one helluva show. So far they’ve been performing around 18 of their top hits and classics. We’re not going to tell you the entire setlist, but we throw out a few names for you to salivate over. They will be performing songs like “Cut The Cord,” “Fly From

The Inside,” “If You Only Knew,” “Save Me,” “I’ll Follow You,” “Devil,” “Get Up,” “Monsters,” “Second Chance,” “Sound Of Madness,” and of course, their tribute to late Ronnie Van Zant and Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Simple Man.” You can expect a lot more great hits at this show, as we are only scratching the surface here. Brent Smith, frontman for the band is just chomping at the bit to get back out on the road with his bandmates in Shinedown and celebrate 20 years of Shinedown with all their friends, fans, and family. In a recent interview with Billboard, Brent spoke about the band’s desire to get back on the road. “The goal was to get back to touring as soon as possible, and as safely as possible, because people need that release. They need to be able to be together again,” Smith shares. “Music is a saving grace for a lot of people. I know it is for me. I think it’s what’s going to give people back their confidence.” Since Shinedown exploded on the music scene with their first album release, Leave A Whisper in 2003, they have been creating quite a legacy for themselves. That’s right, we said 10 million. That’s a lot of music to spread around the planet, especially when you take in to account that they’ve managed to do that with only 6 albums under their belt. Those albums are Leave A Whisper (2003), Us and Them (2005), The Sound Of Madness (2008), Amaryllis (2012), Threat To Survival (2015), and their most recent release Attention Attention (2018). Those albums have produced 14 Platinum and Gold singles and 5 Platinum and Gold albums. If that wasn’t enough, they have also managed to rack up more that 2.7 billion streams. Their most recent hits, such as “Atlas Falls,” “ATTENTION ATTENTION,” “Get Up,” “Monsters” and “Devil” have brought their total to 17 No. 1s on the Mediabase Active Rock Chart and 16 No. 1s on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs Chart. They have gone on to break the record for the most No. 1's ever in the history of the Billboard charts. And one more thing that we need to mention here is that all of Shinedown’s 27 consecutive singles have made it into the Top 5 of the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs Chart. There’s another milestone that’s going to be hard to top. Shinedown has recently been named the Number 1 band on Billboard’s “Greatest Of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists” chart. Their most recent album release, ATTENTION ATTENTION, released on Atlantic Records, has received over 622 million streams worldwide and collectively hit the #1 position on Billboard’s Alternative, Top Rock and Hard Rock Albums Charts. The album debuted in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 and has gone on to receive five iHeart Radio MusicAward nominations. ˇThe album is somewhat of a concept album interweaving stories about the human spirit touching on subjects such as mental health, overcoming struggles, not being afraid of adversity and the thought of failure, and the importance of human interaction. Kings Of Leon Perform at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Hitting the road and on their way to Houston are the Kings Of Leon. The band is touring in support of their new album release, When You See Yourself. Their “When You See Yourself Tour” will touch down in Houston at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on September 18th. The tour started out on August 3rd at the Ithink Financial Amphitheater in West Palm Beach Festival and is scheduled to wind down on October 3rd at the Sunlight Supply Amphitheater in Ridgefield, Washington. Special guests Cold War Kids will join them as support, with band frontman Nathan Willett adding, “We are so excited to open for Kings of Leon on tour all over the US! Like- thrilled beyond belief, losing our minds about it! Let’s go!” Known for their impressive live performances, which have consistently been praised by critics for their dynamic creative, Kings of Leon will take to the stage performing new material alongside fan favorite tracks in their highly anticipated return to live shows. Christone “Kingfish” Ingram continued from previous page By Kevin Wildman The face of the “Blues” is changing. New styles are being incorporated into it. The sounds of the traditional Blues in not necessarily being phased out as much as new influences are being phased in. More R&B, soul, and even rock are being introduced into the traditional blues sound, albeit very subtly. And now even younger audiences are being introduced to the Blues. One of the catalysts for this “new” influx in the Blues could be attributed to a young Blues performer named Christone Ingram, dubbed Christone “Kingfish” Ingram by Mississippi blues musician, Bill “Howl-N-Madd” Perry. Perry was a mentor to the young Christone and gave him his new nickname after playing with him a few times. Now 22, Christone is not just an overnight sensation, he has been hard at it since his early teens. By the age of 16 he was presented the prestigious “2015 Rising Star Award” by the Rhythm & Blues Foundation. Prior to that he even performed at the White House in 2014 for Michelle Obama as part of the delegation of students representing the Delta Blues Museum. It’s really no surprise as to the progress that young Kingfish has made over the last few years. He has been studying the blues for quite a while previous to those appearances and accolades. He started even long before that as he was raised on the Blues. By the time he was five years old (yes, five years old), he started becoming enamored with the ‘blues’ when his father showed him a PBS Special about Muddy Waters. This led to trips to the famous Delta Blues Museum to learn more about this great musical art form. It was there were he got his first real taste of the ‘blues’ when he started taking music lessons from Bill Perry and Richard “Daddy Rich” Crisman. He also attended Clarksdale’s Pinetop Perkins Workshop Experience every summer after that. Yes, this boy was on a roll. He started out at 6 years old playing drums. By the time he was 11 he had switched to bass and from that he later moved on to the guitar. His influences range from Robert Johnson to Lightnin’ Hopkins to BB King to Muddy Waters. It wasn’t long before he became additionally influenced by more soulful and rock performers such as Jimi Hendrix and Prince. With influences like that
behind him, it’s no surprised that his take on “the blues” took a bit more progressive turn on his life. In seventh grade, Kingfish started performing around his local town. Soon he started developing his own following, and it wasn’t long before he started performing at bigger clubs in the area, such as Red’s Lounge, the Ground Zero Blues Club, the New Roxy, and the Delta Blues Room. By 2017, he had even moved on to performing at Festivals, such as the 10th St. Louis Blues Festival.

By 2019, fate struck and young Christone “Kingfish” Ingram found himself signed to the prestigious Alligator Records, whom released his first album, Kingfish, making him one of the youngest artists ever signed to the record label. Kingfish made it to the #1 Position on both The Billboard Blues Chart and Billboard Heatseeker album chart upon it’s release. Christone “Kingfish” Ingram continued from previous page Now, at only 22 years old, Kingfish is back with his newest Alligator Records release, 662. 662 is named after the telephone area code for the town in which he was raised, Clarksdale, Mississippi. Released just this year, 662 features 13 great songs that showcase the various influences and his take on them. While Kingfish introduced him nationally to the “Blues” community, Christone hopes the new release will really let them see his true personality in his music. “The world was introduced to me with Kingfish,” says Christone. “Now with 662, I want the world to hear and meet a different, more personal side of me. 662 is a direct reflection of my growth as a musician, a songwriter, a bandleader, and as a young man. This album was written during the pandemic, shortly after I returned home from a whirlwind year and a half touring and promoting Kingfish. Virtually almost every song on 662 was cowritten by Tom and Christone together. The union of the two of them was introduced through legendary Bluesman, Buddy Guy, as Christone explains, “Everyone knows that Mr. Guy was behind the first record and he got with Tom, so that Tom could produce this record. From day one, we got together writing songs at his house. It just clicked. It’s not the same kind of formula as Mr. Guy used, but it’s kind of close. I would tell him about things going on in my life or particular things that I wanted to write about and we’ll put our heads together and we’ll get in the writing situation. Tom was literally one of the first songwriter’s to tell me about telling a story and painting a picture when you write a song. That’s kind of what I’ve learned from the sessions and that has made me a little more prepared when I started the Zoom sessions last year and even now.” Sessions for this album typically started with the two of them bouncing ideas off of each other. “Let me see if I can paint a picture of this for you,” explains Christone. “Normally if we’re together on a Zoom session, I’ll pick up an acoustic and if there’s
not a groove that I already have, I’ll give him one to listen to. We’ll just be humming some ideas or I’ll just play something, and he’ll say play that again and I’ll play it again and it’ll sound catchy or something… Or I’ll tell him a story and he might write a couple of lines and I contribute a little bit while I’m playing a groove in the back of it, or vice-versa. And by the end we’ll have a whole song and we’ll record it, then we’ll both lean back and listen to it.” When it comes to the lyrics on this album, the two of them work together as a team bouncing ideas off of each other until they come up with just the right phrasing and a complete thought as to where the lyrics need to go in a song. Christone tells us that this album is definitely more personal to him that the previous album was. “This is definitely my most personal one because I feel it goes a little more in depth on the things that go on in my life. The first record, Kingfish, was everything that was going on in my head, but continued on next page

So, this one two years later is where we wanted to showcase the growth and everything that has been going on in my life behind the guitar.” Christone tells us that one of the most personal songs on the album is the song “Another Live Goes By.” “A lot of the people, when they think about the blues,” describes Christone, “the first thing they think about is ‘my baby left me.’ But with everything that’s going on in the world today, I wanted to showcase was the protest movement, and that was something that we have to write about and talk about in the blues world. So that’s one of the biggest songs for sure and a few other ones that I’m into,” continues Christone, “are “Long Distance Woman,” “You’re Already Gone,” and some of the biographical songs like “Too Young To Remember” and a whole lot of others for sure.” Probably the most personal song on the album for Christone is the song, “Rock And Roll.” Originally written by Ashley Ray & Sean McConnell, Christone took the song and revised the lyrics as a tribute to his late mother, Princess Pride Ingram, as he explains, “We kind of revised some lyrics and made it like a tribute to my mom. I would say that this song is a real personal song for me for sure.” Another interesting song on the album, “She Calls Me Kingfish” is about a woman that seems to be stepping out on him, as Christone tells us. “It’s about a chick that I love, but she’s there, just to be there and she’s slipping out on me. She calls me Kingfish and she’s loving someone else. She’s being manipulative, but you can’t get rid of her. You just sit there and take it. That’s pretty much what “She Calls Me Kingfish” is about. She loves me and then she goes and messes around or some sort.” And then you’ve got the song, “Long Distance Woman,” a song about being on the road and leaving your woman at home. We asked Christone if it was the same woman and he laughed at told us that it could be…. “When you’re on the road… Being a musician calls for a lot of baggage. People consider us to be the type of people to have one in every town, so when you try to find that one person, that person could have that bag over your head. There could be a fight
while you’re on the road while your person is back home. When you dig older women, you can get caught up in certain situations that you maybe you ain’t supposed to be in.” For the song “Too Young To Remember,” Christone takes us down the road past the juke joints he used to frequent at a young age with his uncle. “‘Too Young Too Remember’ is pretty much about life. You know, when I was young I was going to some of the Juke Joints with my uncle who is a local bluesman in Clarksdale, taking me into some of the local Juke Joints and seeing old shacks down the highway that had like an old blues meaning to them. That’s another one that explains I’m too young too remember, but I’m definitely old enough to know about it. I wasn’t around for most of it when he was in his peak and heyday, but the more I got older, the more I learned about it, the more I know about it for sure.” For the song, “I Got To See You,” Christone delves back into those long distance romances, as he explains. “It goes back to the whole long distance thing,” Christone laughs, “I can’t get descriptive, but it goes back into the wanting to see somebody that you’re really into, but you can’t get to them. It was kind of like one of the pains of Covid and being on the road. It was one of the pains of being in that long distance relationship or whatever, not being able to see you mate.” Not every song Christone writes is about relationships. Sometime it’s just about life and the rigors of the road, such as the song “That’s What You Do.” “‘That’s What You Do” is like taking another turn,” says Christone. “It’s about the sacrifices that we go through being on the road and rushing through airports and sometimes not being
able to take a rest before a show. We have to get off the airplane and head straight to soundcheck. I wanted to show and tell about all the stuff we have to go through as a band. We’re doing it because of our love of the blues and the people. When it comes to Christone’s influences, he can’t help but acknowledge the late Robert Johnson and even Son House. These two musicians formed an indelible influence on his and his love for the Blues. “Most definitely,” explains Christone, “he was one of the first ones, him and Son House. And of course, Robert Johnson with that infamous story of his. I heard that growing up. I couldn’t help but want to know this guy and his hidden mystic. So yeah, Robert Johnson was a big influence. A lot of people don’t know that Robert Johnson was really ahead of his time. He has a legacy that will go on forever and be forever revered.” After spending a year and a half promoting his first album, young Christone “Kingfish” Ingram has found being sequestered during the Covid pandemic pretty confining. Although he was able to take some time to continue writing new songs and at times take part in some livestreams, it just hasn’t been the same as touring, He really wants to get back on the road again to promote his new album. And, as you can see here in this story, he has a lot to talk about in his relationships, experiences, and life in general that he wants to get out on stage and perform. Maroon 5 Perform at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion September 28th By Kevin Wildman 3 Time GRAMMY® Award-Winning multi-platinum artists, Maroon 5 will be appearing in Houston this month at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on September 28th. The band is touring in support of their newest and seventh album release, Jordi. This is the first time that Maroon 5 has toured since having to cancel their 2020 tour due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The tour kicked off on August 10th in Auburn, Washington at the White River Amphitheater and is schedule to end on October 8th in Concord, California at the Concord Pavilion. To support both the tour and their new album, Maroon 5 has been quite busy on television. So far they have appeared on The Voice, The Late Show with Steven Colbert, and on NBC’s TODAY Summer Concert Series. Jordi’s Deluxe version features 14 great performances and a bevy of guest performers as well. The album was released in June of this year through 222, Interscope and Polydor Records. Guest artists on the album include Megan Thee Stallioan, Blackbear, Stevie Nicks, Bantu, H.E.R., YG, Anuel AA, Rainy, Jason Derulo, and the late rappers Juice Wrld and Nipsey Hussle. The album’s name is a nod to the band’s original manager Jordan Feldstein. He was also Adam Levine’s childhood friend, so the band was dealt

quite a blow when he passed. Lead singer Adam Levine shared the following on Instagram: “I miss him every single day. And I’m proud to have etched his name into the history of this band that he helped build from the ground up…every step of the way. We love you Jordi.” The first single from Jordi was actually released in September of 2019, and is titled “Memories”. “Memories” was actually dedicated to Jordan Feldstein two years later after his passing. While “Memories” appears on the regular album release, the Deluxe version of the album features two versions of the song, the original version along with a remix that features Nipsey Hussle & YG. The song debuted at number 22 on the Billboard Charts and peaked at number 2 making it the band’s tenth Top 5 single. “Memories” has already gone Triple-Platinum. The second single from the album, “Nobody’s Fool” also came out prior to the album’s release. The band tells us that the inspiration behind this song was both the death of George Floyd along with the Covid-19 Pandemic. It also charted on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200. continued on next page

This song was a collaboration between Megan Thee Stallion and Maroon 5. “Beautiful Mistakes” also had a feature video that went along with its release. The video features Adam Levine walking down an empty street singing just before climbing into his convertible and driving away. The video then segues from Adam driving on a reality filmed road to an animation sequence where he starts driving upward over the multicolored landscape passing by the Hollywood sign where he soon stands atop one of the letters there. Then he is back in the car flying across the streets of an animated Los Angeles. It is there where Megan The Stallion comes in flying over the same animated landscape in her car singing. Soon she jumps out of her car and winds up in the back seat of Adam Levine’s ride…. still singing. Soon the two of them are seen flying through an animated cloud of what appears to be brightly colored doughnuts… that’s right, doughnuts. Without a doubt, this is a strange video, but it is entertaining, and the song is a good one. Our only advice is…. Adam, when you are flying through a cloud of doughnuts, don’t stand up. What if one of those giant things knocked you out of the car! LOL. The music video was produced by Sophie Muller and the song again made its was into the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. So far the band is on a roll. It also jumped to #11 at Top 40 and #3 at Hot AC radio. The fourth single from the album, “Lost” was released alongside the album on June 11th. This one was also accompanied by a music video. “Lost” was also directed by Sophie Muller making it the 4th video she has worked on with Maroon 5 overall. This video starts out on a fog-clouded coastline with Adam singing and the rest of the band in the background standing on the rocks there. It doesn’t take long before we spot Adam underwater where he encounters a mermaid. Why not! If I were underwater, I wouldn’t mind running into a beautiful mermaid. Then we find him back on the surface again, walking around the rocks… still singing, then back underwater again where romance blossoms, then back on the rocks… which continues like this thru the end of the song. Kind of bizarre, but then again, it is a good song. Other song worth noting on the new album include “Echo” featuring guest artist blackbear, “Remedy” featuring Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stevie Nicks, “One Light” featuring Bantu, “Convince Me” featuring the Academy® Award winning H.E.R., and “Can’t Leave You Alone” featuring WRLD. As we mentioned before, the album has been released in two formats. There is the regular version that contains 11 cuts, and
there is the Deluxe version that has a total of 14 cuts. Bonus cuts on the Deluxe version include the second version of “Memories” featuring Nipsey Hussle & YG, “Button” featuring Anuel AA & Tainy, and “Lifestyle” featuring the duet of Adam Levine and Jason Derulo. The Deluxe version is only available at Target stores and it features a limited-edition cover and a poster. Without a doubt, this is going to be one helluva concert this month at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. To date, the three times Grammy® winning band has racked up the sales of over 75 million albums and 400 million singles worldwide. Not a bad haul if you ask me. In addition to that, Maroon 5 has received Gold and Platinum awards in more that 35 countries across the globe. Their last studio album, Red Pill Blues, which was also released on 22, Interscope records featured the hit single, “Girls Like You”, which featured Cardi B. It went on to reach #1 at Top 40, #1 at Adult Pop, #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks. The track accumulated over 1.2 Billion Spotify streams and over 3 Billion YouTube/ VEVO views; notably becoming the most-watched video on VEVO in 2018. Already “Memories” from Jordi has received over 1 Billion Spotify streams and is a hit on YouTube with over 725 million views. They tell us that now Maroon 5 has a bonafide Spotify following with over 52 million monthly listeners. Studio albums for Maroon 5 include: Songs About Jane (2002), It Won’t Be Soon Before Long (2007), Hands All Over (2010), Overexposed (2012), v (2014), Red Pill Blues (2017) and Jordi (2021). When it comes to Award recognition, Maroon 5 had their fair share of awards. Besides their 3 GRAMMY® wins, they have also received 3 American Music Awards, 3 People’s Choice Awards, 5 Teen Choice Awards, Eight Billboard Music Awards, and at the 2004 World Music Awards it received the award for “World’s Best New Group.” I would advise everybody out there that wants to see this show to head out and get your tickets as quickly as possible. Chances are there just might not be any at the gate when you get there, but you can always take that chance. So far Maroon 5 has sold over 6,750,000 tickets worldwide. John Conlee Performs at Main Street Crossing For Two Nights, September 21 & 22 One of the most respected vocalists to emerge during the urban cowboy era, John Conlee was known for his superb taste in material and his distinctively melancholy voice. Conlee was born and raised on a tobacco farm in Versailles, KY, in 1946, and took up the guitar as a child, performing on local radio at age ten. He went on to sing with the town barbershop chorus, but didn’t initially pursue music as a career, instead becoming a licensed mortician. He also worked as a disc jockey at numerous area radio stations, and made important industry connections via that area when he moved to Nashville in 1971. Five years later, Conlee’s demo tape got him a contract with ABC. He released a few singles, but didn’t find acceptance until 1978’s “Rose Colored Glasses,” a song he’d co-written with a newsman at his radio station, rocketed into the country Top Five. Conlee spent the next decade or so scoring hit after hit, nearly all of them helmed by producer Bud Logan. He had two number ones in 1979 alone — “Lady Lay Down” and “Backside of Thirty” — and four number two hits through 1981, which included “Before My Time,” “Friday Night Blues,” “She Can’t Say That Anymore,” and “Miss Emily’s Picture.” Conlee returned to the top of the charts three times over 1983-1984 with “Common Man,” “I’m Only in It for the Love,” and “In My Eyes,” and had his last number one in 1986 with “Got My Heart Set on You.” All told, Conlee made the Top Ten 19 times through 1987, when he moved from MCA to Columbia and reached the Top Five with “Domestic Life.” Never much for touring, Conlee subsequently curtailed his recording activities as well, instead devoting his time to charity work (often on behalf of American farmers), raising his family, and running his own farm outside Nashville. Between 1978 and 2004 Conlee charted a total of 32 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, and recorded 11 studio albums. His singles include seven #1 hits: “Lady Lay Down,” “Backside of Thirty,” “Common Man,” “I’m Only in It for the Love,” “In My Eyes,” “As Long as I’m Rockin’ with You” and “Got My Heart Set on You.” In addition to these, Conlee sent 14 other songs into the Top Ten. 20 Music News • September 2021

Local H Perform At The Scout Bar September 23 Local H Perform at The Scout Bar on September 23rd. The Band is touring in support of their new album release, Lifers. LIFERS features contributions by an array of respected friends and guests —including Juliana Hatfield, John McCauley of Deer Tick, and legendary rock engineer Steve Albini— LIFERS is the first album from Local H in five years, and the release coincides with the group’s 30 year anniversary (and our collective doom). LIFERS was released April 10th, 2020 on AntiFragile Music. “It feels kind of weird to have a record coming out while all of this is happening. The only thing that I’ve ever seen that’s been anything close to this is 9/11. Our fourth record was supposed to come out that month in 2001, but after THAT day it got pushed back to the following year. Tour dates got cancelled. A bunch of shit got shut down. At the time, those delays and setbacks felt like everything. Like it was the worst thing that could happen to us. It was childish and more than a little selfish — and I’m ashamed to admit that I even felt that way. And now, even MORE shit has been shut down. More people are going to be directly affected. And what’s worse, we can’t gather together and try to make sense of it — not in the way we used to be able to. We can’t go out and see our friends. Most of us can’t even visit our families. are losing their jobs. People are losing their LIVES. So once again, I’m a little ashamed. I’m ashamed to ask anybody to pretend that our little fucking record means anything in this time of great and collective tragedy. But you know what? If nothing else, sticking to the schedule and insisting on releasing this record on time has certainly helped keep US sane. All the small mundane tasks that go into promoting a new record —the bios, the interviews, the FaceStagram updates and TwitTube posts (ESPECIALLY when we can’t play live in front of actual people!) —that’s been a lifeline for us. It’s given us a reason to get out of bed. Maybe it’s not much, but it’s something. And we’re grateful for it. We’re also grateful for the feedback that we’ve received and the sense of connection that it’s given us. Even if it’s been transmitted through a screen — it’s felt real. Formed in Los Angeles for the eponymous television series, the quartet of Dolenz, Nesmith, the late Peter Tork and the late Davy Jones brought a singular mix of pop, rock, psychedelia, Broadway and country to their music. The Monkees’ first single, “Last Train To Clarksville,” was released in August 1966 and quickly headed for the top spot of the Billboard charts in tandem with the band’s self-titled debut album, which held the top slot for 13 of the 78 weeks it remained in the Top 200. (Two decades later, in the midst of a new burst of Monkeemania, The Monkees popped back onto the charts, bringing the total number of weeks to 102.)
The Monkees Perform At Dosey Doe September 28 & 29 Micky Dolenz And Michael Nesmith Will Commemorate 55 Years Of Monkeemania With a Fall Tour that will touch down in The Woodlands for two nights at Dosey Doe on September 28th and 29th respectively. Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees will embark on their farewell tour in September 2021. Commemorating 55 years of Monkeemania, the tour will embrace major markets in North America through the fall, launching on September 11 in Seattle and ending back where it all began in Los Angeles at The Greek Theater on November 14. Their critically acclaimed concerts feature the voice of Dolenz (who sang The Monkees’ biggest hits: “I’m A Believer,” “Last Train To Clarksville,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday” and “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone”) and the group’s primary songwriter, Nesmith (who wrote such classics as “Mary, Mary,” “Papa Gene’s Blues,” “You Just May Be The One” and “Listen To The Band,” to name but a few). “The Monkees Farewell Tour” will feature songs that span the band’s entire career – from their 1966 self-titled debut album to 2016’s Good Times! Their most recent release, The Monkees – The Mike & Micky Show Live, was issued in April 2020 and became their 17th Billboard charting album release. In addition to their hits, their farewell shows will spotlight songs featured on their Emmy-winning TV series (“The Girl I Knew Somewhere,” “You Told Me,” “Randy Scouse Git,” “Goin’ Down” and “For Pete’s Sake”) as well as music from their feature film Head (“Circle Sky” and “As We Go Along”). Few could have predicted the impact The Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later. 24

By the time the series aired its final new episode on March 25, 1968, The Monkees had seen three further albums top the charts —More of the Monkees, Headquarters, and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd. All were released in 1967, staggeringly enough, racking up several more hit singles, with “I’m A Believer,” “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” “The Girl I Knew Somewhere,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” “Words,” “Daydream Believer,” “Valleri,” and “Tapioca Tundra” all finding their way into the Billboard Top 40. The final tally: 16 million albums and 7.5 million singles sold in a mere 2 1/2 years. After the series’ two-season run, the group went on to star in the cult feature film, Head (co-written by Jack Nicholson) and a TV special (33 1/3 Revolutions per Monkee) while also continuing to record new material. But as the ’60s gave way to the ’70s, the members of The Monkees eventually gave in to their individual musical interests and went their separate ways. In February 1986, after MTV broadcast a marathon of The Monkees series, Dolenz, Jones, and Tork reunited for a 20th anniversary tour, with Nesmith joining them onstage for the Los Angeles date of the tour. In 1996, all four members of the group reunited for a new album (Justus) and TV special (Hey, Hey, It’s The Monkees). In the wake of Jones’s death on February 12, 2012, the surviving members of the Monkees reunited and performed a series of concerts. The shows were received so triumphantly that Dolenz, Nesmith, and Tork returned the following summer for a tour dubbed, “A Midsummer’s Night With the Monkees.” To celebrate the Monkees’ 50th anniversary in 2016, the surviving members of the band recorded the critically acclaimed album Good Times! (produced by the late Adam Schlesinger). Much like the Monkees’ early albums, it featured tracks written for the band by a group of gifted songwriters, including Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Andy Partridge (XTC) and more. Following the passings of Davy Jones and Peter Tork (who succumbed to cancer in 2019), Michael & Micky have honored the music and the memory of The Monkees onstage.

Brothers Osborne Perform at White Oak Music Hall September 23 Brothers Osborne play an inclusive brand of modern country, tipping their hat to an outlaw past while embracing the funky sounds of the present. This smart blend was showcased on their 2016 debut, Pawn Shop, an album anchored by their breakthrough single “Stay a Little Longer.” The band expanded their musical reach on 2018’s Port Saint Joe, an acclaimed album that proved Brothers Osborne were among the more ambitious country groups of their time, doubling down on their Southern rock roots while also accentuating their contemporary R&B influences. Raised in Deale, Maryland, siblings John and T.J. Osborne grew up listening to their father’s country and rock records. Encouraged to write and play their own music, the brothers began to practice in a shed behind their house. By their teens they had formed the cover band Deuce & a Quarter, playing songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Merle Haggard, Bob Seger, and others in local bars. John eventually moved to Nashville, followed two years later by T.J., and Brothers Osborne were born. In 2011, the brothers signed a publishing deal with WarnerChappell/King Pen Music, and a year later they signed a record deal with Capitol. The duo’s debut single, “Let’s Go There,” appeared in 2013, followed by the single “Rum” in 2014. A year later, they released a re-recorded version of their EP track “Stay a Little Longer.” Produced by Jay Joyce (Emmylou Harris, Keith Urban, Faith Hill), the single peaked at number four on Billboard’s country chart and eventually went platinum, also earning the duo their first Grammy nomination. In 2016, Brothers Osborne released their debut full-length album, the Joyce-produced Pawn Shop. The record included both “Stay a Little Longer” and “Rum,” as well as subsequent charting singles “21 Summer” and “It Ain’t My Fault.” Industry recognition followed quickly; the brothers took home Vocal Duo of the Year at both the CMA and ACM awards, and “21 Summer” and “It Ain’t My Fault” were both nominated for Grammy Awards. “I’m good for some, but I’m not for everyone,” TJ Osborne sings on Skeletons, Brothers Osborne’s third studio album. That lyric might as well be the group’s mission statement: a proud declaration of uniqueness, delivered by a band of brothers whose boundary-breaking country songs have always mixed the twang of southern music with the groove and guitar-driven swagger of rock & roll. At the same time, it’s hard to look at the Osbornes’ long list of musical milestones — including six Grammy nominations, four CMA Awards, five ACM trophies, and more than a half-dozen hits — and imagine anyone turning up their noses at a sound that’s taken the siblings from the blue-collar beach bars of their Maryland hometown to some of the biggest stages across the world. Skeletons is a celebration of that sound — a melodic, muscular album that builds upon the hooks of the band’s careerlaunching debut, Pawn Shop, as well as the forward-thinking adventurousness of their sophomore release, Port Saint Joe. Shinyribs Perform at White Oak Music Hall on September 25th Shinyribs is the continuation of Kevin Russell’s musical journey that began in Beaumont, TX when, at 14, he found his father’s guitar under his bed, along with a sewing machine, a billy club and a box of comic books. Luckily he chose the guitar. Following his family’s oil boom and bust migratory path he landed in Shreveport, LA where he formed his first band. Picket Line Coyotes were a Husker Du meets Elvis Costello hybrid that lived and died between the “Arklatexabamassippi” borders much like their unfortunate animal namesake. That’s what took him to Austin where The Gourds were born from those Coyote ashes. That storied band of pumpkins came to an end after 18 years of good times and hard travelin’. From that point on Russell, has been riding high on the Shinyribs river of country-soul, swamp-funk and tickle. A Shinyribs show is an exaltation of spirit. It’s a hip shaking, belly laughing, soul-singing, song-slinging, down-home house party. All styles of American music are likely to be touched on, squeezed on, kissed on by this world-class band featuring Winfield Cheek on Keyboards, Keith Langford on Drums, Jeff Brown on Bass, the Tijuana Trainwreck Horns, and The Shiny Soul Sisters - Kelley Mickwee & Alice Spencer. He’s Burl Ives meets Al Green; Hank, Jr. meets Teddy Pendergrass. Wendell Berry meets Chuck Berry. Austin-based roots combo Shinyribs was formed in 2007 by Gourds co-founder Kevin Russell. Initially begun as a solo venture, Russell started playing a monthly gig in Houston as a means of earning extra cash to pay off a new car he’d bought for his family. His workman’s side gig eventually became a profound creative outlet for the prolific songwriter and blossomed into a full band featuring Gourds drummer Keith Langford along with bassist Jeff Brown and pianist Winfield Cheek. Shinyribs’ music is a natural extension of the quirky Texan art/alt-country that made the Gourds so successful. Mixing soul, country, blues, and rock, Russell’s new band issued its debut LP, Well After Awhile, in 2010 during a break between Gourds albums. The Gourds would release one more album, 2011’s Old Mad Joy, before Russell finally put his longtime band officially on hiatus in 2013 in order to concentrate on Shinyribs as a full-time project. That same year, Shinyribs followed up with their second LP, Gulf Coast Museum. After the Gourds went on hiatus in 2013, Shinyribs became Russell’s and Langford’s primary vehicle. By 2016, Shinyribs included bass guitar, keyboard, horns (Tijuana TrainWreck Horns), and backing singers (Shiny Soul Sisters). Shinyribs’ sound is a combination of many styles and influences. Russell calls it “country-soul” and “swamp-funk.” The ultimate decisions on Shinyribs’ musical direction are based on Russell’s vision for the band. Live performances generally feature Russell dancing on stage or in a conga line extending through the venue. Snarky Puppy Perform At Warehouse Live On September 23th After a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred/New Yorkbased quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for all four of the band’s Grammy® awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance in 2014, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016, 2017, and 2021), Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.” Snarky Puppy is a collective of sorts with as many as 25 members in regular rotation. They each maintain busy schedules as sidemen (with such artists as Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and D’Angelo), producers (for Kirk Franklin, David Crosby, and Salif Keïta), and solo artists (many of whom are on the band’s indy label, GroundUP Music). At its core, the band represents the convergence of both black and white American music culture with various accents from around the world. Japan, Argentina, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Puerto Rico all have representation in the group’s membership. But more than the cultural 32

diversity of the individual players, the defining characteristic of Snarky Puppy’s music is the joy of performing together in the perpetual push to grow creatively. The band was formed by bassist and primary composer Michael League in 2003, starting inconspicuously enough as a group of college friends at the University of North Texas’ Jazz Studies program. Three years later, a serendipitous intersection with the Dallas gospel and R&B community in Dallas transformed the music into something funkier, more direct, and more visceral. It was at this time that the group absorbed musicians like Robert “Sput” Searight (drums), Shaun Martin (keyboards), and Bobby Sparks (keyboards), and were heavily influenced by legendary keyboardist Bernard Wright (Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, Marcus Miller). An acclaimed fusion-influenced jam band, Snarky Puppy have built a loyal following with their adventurous blend of jazz, rock, and funk. Led by bassist Michael League, the band emerged in the mid-2000s and garnered buzz with albums like 2006’s The Only Constant, 2010’s Tell Your Friends, and 2013’s Family Dinner, Vol. 1, which took home the Grammy for Best R&B Performance for their cover of the Brenda Russell song “Something” featuring singer Lalah Hathaway. Formed in 2004 in Denton, Texas, the group features a wide-ranging assemblage of musicians known affectionately as “the Fam,” centered around bassist and leader Michael League. They debuted with the concert album Live at Uncommon Ground in 2005. Over the next few years, the band worked to build their fan base, touring heavily and issuing a handful of well-received albums including 2006’s The Only Constant, 2007’s The World Is Getting Smaller, 2008’s Bring Us the Bright, 2010’s Tell Your Friends, and 2012’s groundUP. Snarky Puppy next signed to Impulse! and released Sylva, a collaboration with the Netherlands-based Metropole Orkest, in 2015. The album was greeted enthusiastically by the international press and won the band their second Grammy, this time for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, at the 2016 Grammy Awards. They followed it with two live documents. The first was World Tour, a 32-disc box featuring their 16 favorite concerts; the deluxe package was sold exclusively through their website. Also in early 2016, they issued the audio-video set Family Dinner, Vol. 2, a documentary follow-up to the first Family Dinner that was recorded the previous year. Vol. 2 showcased the band during a concert (and included guests Charlie Hunter, Susana Baca, Salif Keita, and David Crosby), in interviews, and in backstage sequences. In April 2016, Snarky Puppy struck again with Culcha Vulcha, their 11th studio album and first solely studiobased production in eight years. It topped the jazz album charts the week of its release and took home the prize for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards. In 2019, they issued the League-produced Immigrance, which included the single “Xavi.”

The Hu Perform At The House Of Blues September 30th The HU is a band from Mongolia that blends heavy metal and traditional Mongolian throat singing. Their first two videos (“Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem”) immediately went viral garnering the band over 100 million views. The explosive reaction to The HU resulted in a number of features about the band in international media such as NPR, ET India Times, Playboy Mexico, Jack Canal+Fr, Hong Kong 01, DW News Germany and others. The band’s name The HU, is the Mongolian root word for human being. They call their style “Hunnu Rock”…inspired by the Hunnu, an ancient Mongolian empire, known as The Huns in western culture. Some of the band’s lyrics include old Mongolian war cries and poetry. Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia by their producer Dashka, along with the members Gala, Jaya, Temka, and Enkush. The HU combines Rock Music with traditional Mongolian instrumentation like the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp), guttural throating singing and the bombastic bass and drums of rock. All four members have earned Bachelor’s or higher degrees in music and have several years of touring experience throughout Asia and the Pacific Rim. Since the formation of the band, they’ve been working on their first album, The Gereg. The word Gereg was used as the first Diplomatic “Passport” by the Mongol empire during the time of Genghis Khan. The album contains nine songs including viral hits “Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem”, and was released on September 13, 2019 via Better Noise Music (f/k/a Eleven Seven Music). The Hu are a Mongolian band whose fusion of heavy metal, throat singing, and traditional Mongolian instrumentation brought them global attention and commercial success at the end of the 2010s. Their single “Wolf Totem” enjoyed a surprising run in the U.S., topping two Billboard charts, making them the first band from their country to do so. The Gereg Formed in 2016 the capital city of Ulaanbaatar by Gala (morin khuur, vocals), Jaya (tumur khuur, tsuur, vocals), Enkush (morin khuur, vocals), and Temka (tovshuur, backing vocals), the quartet take their name from the ancient Mongolian empire known as the Hunna, which in Western culture is referred to as the Huns. Utilizing the distinctive, multi-octave droning technique known as throat singing as well as the traditional string and wind instruments of their homeland, the Hu and their producer, Dashka, married this sound with the electric guitars, bass, and drums of heavy metal to great success. Their first two singles, “Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem,” appeared in 2018 and went viral, notching millions of streams worldwide; the latter song hit number one on Billboard’s Hard Rock Digital Sales chart as well as the World Music chart. Both tracks appeared the following year on the Hu’s debut album, The Gereg, which saw international release from Eleven Seven Records. The end of 2019 proved to be a fruitful period, with the group’s first North American tour and the release of collaborative mixes of “Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem” featuring American singers Danny Case (From Ashes to New) and Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach), respectively. The band also landed a song on the soundtrack to the popular Star Wars video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Nina (Ed’s wife, Twin Boy Mom and TexasBird Lyrics, Vocals, Recording Technician, and video editor.) was born a music legacy as well. Nina’s Mom (Raquel - Dile a Esa, Porque No Soy Yo) was a well known early 80’s Spanish pop rock singer who at one time was the headliner with the Latina Queen Selena herself as her opening act…to add to the story. “Porque No Soy Yo” was recorded in Ed’s uncles recording studio (NAGA - Garza Sound Studio) over 5 years before Nina was even born. Nina’s mom raised her to love music and taught her to sing at any given chance. Ed and Nina never dreamed that they would be making music together much less music related to the country genre… ED: ”TexasBird really began with me asking Nina for a favor to jam out on an old song (“Dancin’ with the Devil” Originally written by Ed and David Garcia (lyrics RIP). TEXASBIRD A New husband and Wife Acoustic Music Project That Was 45 Years In The Making… By: Millie Eugene Well we all know that “BIRD” is the word but have you heard about TEXASBIRD? Probably not but TEXASBIRD is now the WORD! We talked with Ed and Nina - Here’s their story! TexasBird is a new passion project that Ed and Nina stumbled upon last year. Ed has been playing punk rock/hardcore guitar in touring bands for over 35 year. He has played in bands that have had songs covered by the world famous heavy metal platinum-selling artist Slayer. He has toured all over the U.S. and was lucky enough to be a hired gun for trash metal pioneers DRI on the South American leg of their 2013 tour. He has written on and been featured on 9 full lengths LPs and multiple compilations. He found out recently that his musical roots were a strong and extremely important part of music history here in Houston and worldwide. Ed’s grandfather (Matteo Garza) played stand up bass for Harry Choate’s band when he first recorded Jole Blon (1946 GoldStar- Quinn Recording Co AKA Sugarhill Studios) which was the first Cajun song to EVER hit the billboard top 100 and it smashed in at #4. Ed’s grandfather’s dedication to music would spawn a full band of musical sons (Los Tecnicos), grandson (Ed), and great grandson (Ed Jr.). Ed has played guitar for U.Y.US, Humungus, Verbal Abuse, etc. and is currently the manager

NINA: “Honestly, I’m not the best singer but I really love writing lyrics. I drilled old school country like Johnny Cash and old Hee Haw episodes into Ed’s head for years all the while knowing he wasn’t a huge fan, I didn’t care…my Memaw fueled my love for the old beautiful country music. I always dreamed of writing songs and singing, I just didn’t know how. Ed’s background in music really helped me to learn how to write quality songs and not have them just be about me, myself, and I…Ed taught me how to write songs in a way that just about anyone can relate to. Ed is still teaching me how to be a better singer!” TexasBird got the opportunity to record last weekend at the legendary, Sun Studio in Memphis TN. ED: “Being there is unreal, much less recording there…the songs that we see as our most difficult came out great in one and two takes. Memphis just has a special feel, I’ve never been any where else in the world that had that kind of music magic in the air and honestly in the ground and probably the water.” NINA: “Ed has recorded in so many studios. I had never been in the studio myself, all the recording we have done together before Sun Studio was either in the practice room or in our living room. I cried like a baby when we toured the studio back in June. When Ed said he wanted TexasBird to record there, it didn’t really feel real until we unloaded the Guitar and Harmonicas and walked into the back door behind our recording engineers for the evening. The Biker, The Blues, and There She Was...... The open road has a lot to offer including some unforeseen situations, some good, some not so good, and some that include memories of love lost. I was tooling along the long black snake and not a care in the world other than needing to stop for gas and to stretch my legs. Soon a modern day oasis came into sight and the sign said exit here. I went down the ramp and had my choice of brands and the cache’ of fast food joints that were housed inside those stations. However, one of those signs was different. A silhouette of a gal standing next to a dancer’s pole and the words “Come On In”. Well it was a hot day and in small letters the sign also advertised air conditioning. Ok, more than one reason to stretch the legs and take in the local sights. What was about to unfold I never could have imagined but this is how life goes at times. Back a number of years ago I dated a stripper in Arizona she would actually go on to be Miss Nude Arizona and yes she was beautiful. Some folks probably cannot imagine a biker falling in love with a gal who showed the world everything that a birthday suit had to reveal but I did of course. She could have probably chosen just about any guy she wanted but somehow fate brought us together. Man, that woman was exotic. Well here I was walking into the air conditioned dark strip joint and before my eyes could adjust a voice yelled out John is that you? Well a lot of people have the name John so I thought at first it was coincidence but yet something in the tone of that voice had me wondering…. My eyes adjusted and there on stage is the gal that got away years ago and to make matters worse The Eagles were her next song up and the tune was “Witch Woman”. Déjà vu all over again as Yogi would say. Here we were years later and hundreds of miles away from Arizona and look who I ran into today. Fate? Who knows. It’s just one of those things. She could still dance and have the day birds watching her every move as they were seated around the raised stage. The song ended, there was clapping going on, the stage lights came up a bit and I could see her staring at me. Then as it goes in places like that the next song began, she had chosen Timmy Thomas’ “Why Can’t We Live Together” and that really brought back the memories. She used to get off at midnight and we would scoot up to the No Tell Motel and it became quite the regular trip. It was more than physical but of course it was indeed physical as well. We were both free souls, she was more about the metaphysical and I was more about freedom. Her husband had left her for another woman, one of her friends no less and me I was hanging alone at the time. There was a great kinship between us but yet there was a distance between us too. Hard to explain, especially in your early twenties. She finished her set and topped off her show with Steely Dan’s “Do It Again”. As she approached me we both began to smile at the same time. Her walk was distinctive and fit the groove of her ending song. The question is what do you say other than how you doing? Her selections were transporting me in time and it was bitter sweet. She started the conversation, “Think they got a No Tell Motel in his one horse town?” We both began to laugh between us. She sure did look good and whatever that perfume was alluring to say the least. She asked, “What are you riding?” I said I chopped a 75 shovel and I am out for a test drive. Now she was really giggling as she shook her head. I said how about a Courvoisier and she said you remembered. I said how could I ever forget. Then I asked her what her name was and she broke up rolling with laughter (old joke between us about drunks in strip joints) Then she hit me right between the eyes and said she missed me and realized after I was gone that continued on next page

The Biker, The Blues, and There She Was......continued she was in love with me. I told her she always had bad taste in men and hoped that she would smile but she didn’t, she was dead serious now. She asked, “So what’s your story?” I said I was on an odyssey to see America on two wheels. She asked and looked right through me asking, “will you ever come off the road?” I didn’t answer. She went on, “I heard you were working in Chicago with some ladies of the night.” I said don’t believe everything you hear, I am nobody’s pimp. Never been, never will be. But I might provide some protection from time to time and I asked, “you?” She smiled and said after leaving the Sisters Of The Unredeemed Convent I decided to roam. Two blind souls trying to find the ember that light the fires of the night. It was her turn to make the rounds and hustle some tips for the jukebox and off she went looking back every once in a while. She punched in Bill Withers “Ain’t No Sunshine” being sung by Michael Bolton. I saw her glances my way and I kept thinking make your money baby there’s time for us later or was there? It’s like a married man falling in love with another woman but knows better than to cross that line, ouch that hurts. Then again a person only goes around this world one time maybe letting your heart guide you and not your logic is the right way? Maybe that’s why I am on this long open, empty highway? “Bar keep another scotch, thanks.” Two souls traveling in different directions finding solace in each other’s journey. That’s a bitch and that’s the blues baby, that’s the way it goes, and why I live there. Her next song was “Spooky” by Classics IV. Her moves were still good and she could flirt with the front row with the best of them. She was just too cool. Her set ended soon and she came back to visit some more. One of her new dancer friends at the bar came over and asked her some irrelevant question. I am sure she was curious to learn who I was but not too much was being discovered. The next gal up on stage started her set out with Don Henley’s “All She Wants To Do Is Dance”. Good choice. The place was beginning to bop with the rhythm of the tune. All the girls on shift were smiling and flirting. It was good time to watch the hustlers work their end of the game. The two of us were all smiles and yes I was going to find a couple of bottles and find some little No Tell Motel. Life was good, bittersweet and strange for sure, but good none the less. I settled up with the bartender and made tracks for the front door and just as I broke stride to open the door I took one more glance back at her on stage. Man she was a sexy as ever dancing to En Vogue’s “Give Him Something He Can Feel”. Life is good, yep, definitely good. So if you are ever out and about and bored out of your mind strap a sleeping bag onto the front forks of your scooter and set your sails for America. Come on do it, come on and do it, you know you really want to…. In closing– the blues is cool, it’s real, there are songs that fit being down, some that fit being up, and some that hit the mark any ole time at all. The blues is an American cultural success but then again it is also real life for all of us. Traditional blues, Blues Rock, Soul Blues, and more. The main thing is to set yourself free and not trap yourself into being something you are not. Who knows one day you could walk into a bar and run into a memory that is bittersweet and let me tell you I am sure there is blues number for that situation too. September 2021 • Music News 41
