Perform At Warehouse Live June 26 As Part Of The Warehouse Wired Show Hinder began crafting cocky, raucous post-grunge in the early 2000s, when Oklahoma City residents Joe Garvey and drummer Cody Hanson found Austin Winkler singing cover songs at a college party. The three formed the nucleus of Hinder, and the group started landing local gigs opening for such bands as Theory of a Deadman. Lineup changes brought guitarist Mark King and bassist Mike Rodden into the fold, and the quintet signed with Universal after issuing a self-released EP. Their 2005 full-length debut, Extreme Behavior, became one of the year’s most popular albums, climbing to tripleplatinum status and sending “Lips of an Angel” to number three on the singles charts. Hinder returned several years later with a second batch of party anthems entitled Take It to the Limit. All American Nightmare arrived in 2010, followed by Welcome to the Freakshow, the group’s fourth studio album, in 2012. Winkler left Hinder in 2013. Jared Weeks filled in for a tour and then the band tested Nolan Neal before settling on Marshal Dutton in 2015. His first 6 Music MusicNews News •• November May December 2021 2020

album with the band was When the Smoke Clears. Multi-platinum American rockers, Hinder, continue to drive a career of longevity that few bands achieve. Their stats resonate just that, selling over 4 million albums and 10 million singles, garnering north of 150 million video views, and passing the 100 million streams mark. Throw on top the endless energy Hinder has brought to over 15 headlining tours and you can see why they are still rocking. August 11th of 2017 brought another career highlight. The release of their 6th Studio album, coincidently titled The Reign on The End Records/ BMG. This would be their 3rd release with the New York based record label, preceded by Hinder’s first ever acoustic EP Stripped on May 13, 2016. Their 5th full-length studio album When The Smoke Clears entered the Billboard 200 while also claiming four other Top 10 chart positions upon its on May 12, 2015. As one of the few rock bands to grab massive cross-over success,

Hinder’s 2005 debut album, Extreme Behavior, climbed to #6 on the Billboard 200 chart and was the 2nd Top Rock Album. “Get Stoned” would be the album’s first radio single, climbing to a #4 mainstream rock spot. What followed would end up being one of the biggest songs of the year, “Lips of an Angel”, which peaked within the top 10 across several Billboard singles charts, including #1 at Top 40 and Pop 100. Extreme Behavior has since been certified 3x Platinum. In 2008 their sophomore effort, Take It To The Limit, surpassed their debut by peaking at #4 on the Billboard 200 and hitting the Mainstream Rock chart at #3 with single “Use Me”. This solidified Hinder as the biggest new breakout rock act and catapulting them into packed arenas worldwide with the likes of Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Papa Roach, and many others. Hinder proved consistent record hit making by following up with a #1 Top Modern Rock/Alternative Album, All American Nightmare , and a #3 Top Hard Rock Album, Welcome To The Freakshow.

single “Lottery” arrived in January 2018, and topped Billboard’s Triple A chart. Subsequent singles “Uh Huh” and “I Get No Joy” fared similarly well and were later included on Bird’s eponymous full-length debut in April 2019. After joining Cobb on his song “Feet Off the Ground,” she returned in 2020 with a pair of singles, “Head Start” and “Houdini.” Up-and-coming English country singer who gained fame for the release of her debut EP Something American in 2017. She made her network television debut singing “Cathedral” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in October 2017. In her teens, she began learning to play the guitar and soon began writing songs. She later moved to the U.S. to begin recording her first album.

Jade Bird Performs at Heights Theater This Month On May 21 A former London-based singer/ songwriter with a powerful voice, Jade Bird offers a winsome mix of folk, pop, and rustic Americana. While still in her teens she joined the roster of influential indie Glassnote Records, eventually charting with the “Lottery” and “UhHuh,” in advance of her 2019 debut album.

She first started playing the guitar and writing songs when she was 12 and later graduated from the BRIT School in Croydon in 2016. She released her debut EP Something American in July 2017 and followed this up with a range of singles including Lottery, Uh Huh, Love Has All Been Done Before and I Get No Joy. The start of her career has been received positively by several critics and radio stations, leading to her being included in Radio X’s Best Songs of 2018 list and being touted as ‘one to watch’ by the BBC, Radio X and MTV. Something American Drawn to songwriting at a young age, Bird spent her teenage years gigging around England, moving to London when she was only 16 to hone her stagecraft and immerse herself in the city’s folk circuit. The success of a live YouTube performance of her song “Madeline” eventually won Bird a deal with Glassnote, which released her debut EP, Something American, in 2017. She spent part of that year touring the U.S. with Americana singer Brett Cobb. The bright, hooky

She recorded a demo in her final year at BRIT School, which led to a management deal. This was followed by her signing with Glassnote Records. Something American, her first extended play (EP), was released in 2017. This was well-received, and she was named to the BBC Sound of 2018 list at the end of the year.

In 2018, she released “Lottery,” which topped the Adult Alternative Songs chart, making her the fifth female solo artist to do so since 2010. The release of her self-titled debut studio album in 2019 was met with mostly positive reviews from critics. Her honors include nominations for the Americana Music Honors & Awards and the NME Awards, as well as winning the International Breakthrough Artist award at the AIM Independent Music Awards in 2019. The Biker - Chapter 2 The Biker, The Blues, The Open Road, And Miles To Go Riding a rigid frame for thousands of miles is a great way to leave your kidneys somewhere down the road but man a Harley engine and transmission in a low riding rigid frame sure looks good. Riding a rigid frame is sort of like hooking up with someone that looks really good but over the long haul they chuck you for a comfortable ride back home. Oh yes been there and had that happen on both topics. Obviously life on the road isn’t for everyone but if you can get away, if you can just let go of the crap that dogs you day in and day out even for a weekend little setbacks aren’t that big a deal. Well then again maybe some are I guess take a broken master link in the middle of nowhere and no spare link hooked on to the buckle on your boot. That situation sucks and no one in a flat bed Ford is going to slow

down to take a better look at me. That comes across well in a song but not at 9pm on a dark desert highway. Here’s this month’s report from the open road You may remember that I had just dropped off a nice gal in a small town in southern New Mexico near I-10 and indeed it was an interesting detour. She forgot to mention that her Daddy was the sheriff and her daddy didn’t tell me either but one of his deputies certainly did and since I was leaving anyway it was probably a good time to be making tracks. So I scooted east on I-10 looking for a road going north just west of El Paso up through Las Cruces and then on into Ruidoso New Mexico. Buddy of mine has a recording studio up that way, he specializes in recording blues artists. There’s this cool coffeeshop combination 10

restaurant entertainment place there too named Sacred Grounds. The trip from where I was to Ruidoso would take about five hours when you added in a lunch stop and gas so I would arrive there midafternoon. Great road day, clear skies, temperature about where you want it, everything was perfect except for this one trucker with a loud air horn. I run open pipes so as he came up behind me I didn’t notice him and so to get my attention as he began to pass at 85 mph he blew his freaking loud ass horn. I don’t think Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda had that kind of a problem in Easy Rider. Oh they had their share of problems but a guy that was air horn happy was not one of them. That experience was mine, all mine. I am sure the trucker dude meant well but I would not enjoy that experience twice. My old blue jeans would not smell like just oil and gasoline anymore. Beyond that lots of friendly folks were waving as they passed. I was doing about seventy just taking the day in and as folks drove by I could see a lot of smiles. I felt bad for them in a sense because they were caged in and me I was free, free as a bird. “Oh I Want To Be A Bird” seemed like a good song and so I got right into it. About then my hunger alarm went off so I began to watch the road signs for a pub listing. A burger, fries, and no more than ten beers at most and I would be out of the place no matter where it’s located. Getting back to Ruidoso - it’s an interesting place, a tourist town, and from

where I am it’s a bit too far to go before eating and refueling. Ruidoso has a horse track, a casino, all kinds of craft shops, and cabins in the big woods. I got past Las Cruces and I could see a sign that read White Sands ahead. Then there was a billboard that advertised a place named Picacho Brewing Company in Alamogordo. Sounded like a winner so it was going to be the Picacho Brewing watering hole for this guy. Arrived, nice place, clean, easy parking, and I could smell the smoke coming from the grill, this was going work out just fine. I put a five spot in the jukebox and received twelve credits. Most songs eat up two credits so six songs in total. Alvin Lee came to mind and I chose “Baddest Blues”. The man sings, “I couldn’t wait to see you - waiting by the door. There’s no one there to meet me - and your clothes are on the floor. Sorry if I hurt continued on next page

The Biker, The Blues, The Open Road And Miles To Go continued from previous page you and I made you cry. Couldn’t stand to see you with another guy. It’s the bluest blues and it cuts me like a knife. It’s the bluest blues since you walked out of my life” Yep, that the blues baby. I walked over to the bar and a friendly lady asked me what I would like, I replied, “a lager”. She brought the menu over and I ordered something to eat. Then I went back over to the juke and chose some more slow blues. I spotted a new Maria Daines number, “Low Down Dirty Love”. Maria Daines, that woman must have certainly lived it in one way or another so much feeling in her songs. I returned to the bar and a big fella the

size of a Minnesota lumberjack said nice choices and nodded in approval. I smiled and nodded back. The food arrived and I began to take it all in. The bar maid’s choice in a lager went a long way too. These folks got some really good beer. Then someone who meant well punched in a song that completely deflated the mood but that was ok because I was leaving anyway. I Paid up and moved along. I was full, the tank was full, and I was about an hour and half out of Ruidoso. Scooted right through Mescalero and that would have been an interesting place to see but I wanted to end up in Ruidoso while the sun was up. Arrived in Ruidoso. A nice main street, crowded as it has a ton of shops, restaurants, watering holes and

there it was Sacred Grounds. It was time to park, stretch the legs, relieve myself and fill up with a cold beer or ten. I wondered if they had single malt scotch? I mean a man has to have his priorities. On this night Sacred Grounds is featuring recording artist Julia Cozby and if you don’t know about her well this gal is a songwriter and artist extraordinaire. My kind of songwriter because she writes about places as well as life’s experiences. For instance she wanted to write about Route 66 so she went there and visited the small towns that are almost vacant these days. She learned details from the folks there about the initial hopes and then the dashed dreams that occurred on their portion of route 66. Then she penned the lyrics and matched them up with original music and that’s how she began to climb the charts. As the man says, “you either is, or you ain’t” and this Americana songwriter definitely is. I had chosen a good spot to sit so I didn’t have to move later on. Things were working out. I called Rich and yep, he was coming down. It felt like look out Ruidoso we are going to burn some brain cells tonight. Soon a man walked up to me and asked if I owned the shovel outside and I said yes. He said he didn’t see it and pulled into the same parking space and hit it. “You what?” He said yes and it fell over, I am sorry. I immediately stood up and he began to laugh and I didn’t think it was funny at all. He stopped me and said no he didn’t hit it. He told me he was riding a pan and parked next to me. Then he asked where I was from? I told him I was from my Mother where was he from? Then I spotted Rich who was laughing too and then the prank started coming into view. So that was how it was going to be that evening. Hmmm. Paybacks are a bitch gentlemen. I’ve got to admit though they had me, that was a good one, well sort of. It’s nice in Ruidoso and it’s not far from the land of Billy The Kid, the

famous band lands of New Mexico. It was a nice evening too so I had been thinking that I might settle down in the woods, take my sleeping bag off the front tubes, build a campfire and crash under the stars. Rich told me that night that ne was recording a man named Sam Barlow out of El Paso, a bluesman with a long history that stretches across Texas. Great guitar slinger who has definitely been there, done that as they say. Well I am gonna close for now. Thinking about heading over to Roswell or maybe scooting on up to Albuquerque to say hey to Matt at KUNM radio. If I go to Roswell though I could go right through Lincoln New Mexico where Pat Garrett put Billy in jail. Ok going to Roswell. Ever wonder how aliens have sex? I think about things like that. Roswell will be fun…..

of cars, houses, gas stations and stores like the soundtrack of a story, but Country music programs on TV hadn’t really come along much yet; not until the late fifties.” Discovering a guitar in his grandparent’s attic, he spent the next several years woodshedding with records and the radio. Junior was also able to tap into music he couldn’t hear at home which older, college aged kids were listening to. This was possible due to his father’s employment at small campuses throughout the next decade as the family moved twice again. As a young boy he was able to experience the thrill of performing before live audiences, at parties, school functions even singing and playing guitar for five thousand Boy Scouts at an Andrews Air Force Base jamboree; then while still a teenager, getting the chance to sit in with Rock and Roll pioneer, Bo Diddley. Armed with this broad spectrum of influences, he began to develop a storehouse of musical chops. Early on, Junior realized he had to keep his interest in Country music a secret; “it was like a secret friend I carried around, being careful not to tell anyone (especially girls) about my love for it because I thought they would laugh at me.” It wasn’t until the late 1960’s that Junior Brown would proudly explore the passion for the music he had loved since his early childhood in Indiana. With many prominent figures as his inspiration (Country legends, some who he would work with years later), he spent his nights in small clubs across the southwest. “I played more nights in honkytonks during the Seventies and Eighties than most musicians will see in a lifetime… I did so many years of that, night after night, four sets a night, fifteen minute breaks; I mean after that, you’ve gotta get good or you gotta get out. The early 1970’s California Country dance club scene was particularly competitive, but I learned professionalism and stage demeanor which has served me well to this day.” More recently however, Junior has shown himself to be equally adept at a wide variety of American music styles beyond Country. These include Rock and Roll, Blues, Hawaiian, Bluegrass and Western Swing.

Junior Brown Performs At Main Street Crossing For Two Nights, May 21 & 22 With his unique voice, more unique song writing, and even more unique double necked “Guit-Steel” guitar, there has absolutely never been ANYONE like Junior Brown. He’s an American Original. Born in 1952 in Cottonwood, Arizona, Junior Brown

showed an affinity for music at an early age when the family moved to a rural area of Indiana near Kirksville. In the following years, Junior began to experience Country music and remembers it as “growing up out of the ground like the crops – it was everywhere; coming out

There is a dependable consistency in Junior’s writing style (he writes nearly all his material) yet he’s always full of pleasant surprises. Though Junior always knew he could sing and play what he wanted, he had yet to explore his potential as a songwriter. “I realized no one was going to walk into a club and discover me…so I started hanging out with some songwriters who I’d played some jobs with, and they showed me how to support myself by writing and publishing.” With his writing coming together by the mid-Eighties, Brown upgraded his gear in a way that no artist had ever done. Struggling through each show, going back and forth plugging and unplugging guitar to steel guitar while singing, he had a dream one night about the two instruments mysteriously melding into one. The result was Brown’s unique invention, the “Guit-Steel”, a double necked instrument combining standard guitar with steel guitar. Built by Michael Stevens of Stevens Electric continued on next page

Instruments, the Guit-Steel allows Junior to switch instruments quickly in mid song while singing. According to Brown, his guitar and steel guitar playing became more his own around this time, with less imitation of others and more his own original ideas and licks. This maturation coincided with the development of a completely “Junior Brown” style of songwriting which employs subtle dry wit to some songs – others can be more overtly humorous, or just plain dead serious; like his playing, there is a wide range of styles that when combined can only spell Junior Brown. In the early nineties Brown and his band (including wife Tanya Rae) relocated to Texas to the active Austin music scene and landed a weekly gig at the Continental club. Having worked as a sideman for many of the Austin-based acts over the years, Junior was already well familiar with the town. His unique and entertaining combination of singing, songwriting, instrumental and production skills led to a seven record deal with Curb Records that began with “Twelve Shades of Brown” in 1993. He later released two albums on the TelArc label. There were several Grammy nods, a CMA (Country Music Association) award for “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead”, movie and repeated TV appearances like Letterman, Conan, Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, SpongeBob, X Files, Dukes of Hazzard, Me Myself and Irene, Tresspass, Still Breathing, Blue Collar Comedy Tour 1 and 2, and more recently, Better Call Saul. And there were the Ad Campaigns; The Gap, Lee Jeans and Lipton Tea. As Junior became more well known, he began to collaborate on projects with some of his heroes. These include a duet with Ralph Stanley for which Junior received a Bluegrass Music Association Award (IBMA), a duet and video with Hank Thompson, as well as duets with video and record collaborations with the Beach Boys, George Jones, Leon McAuliffe, Ray Price, Leona Williams, Lynn Morris, Lloyd Green and Doc Watson. He even played guitar for Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys in a radio commercial. Junior’s performance on the promotional song, “Better Call Saul” was recorded and released both as a video on AMC as well as a flexible 33 1/3rd vinyl record included in the show’s box set from Season One. On May 24th, 2018, Junior released his 11th and most current album, “Deep in the Heart Of Me”. Rolling Stone Magazine’s listing of 50 Country Albums Every Rock Fan Should Own, honored Brown’s US released album, “12 Shades of Brown”, (Curb Records, 1993) on May 27, 2020. Also inn May of 2020, Brown and his wife began hosting a series of live Facebook concerts under the name, “The Junior & Tanya Rae Brown Show”. Junior, Tanya Rae and the band continue to tear up the highways and will be performing at The Heights Theatre on May 26th for two concerts. There will be an early show and a late show. Seeing Junior live is a definite must, so GUIT WITH IT ’cause he’s AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL!

Piano Playing Aunt Was His Muse Today James Hoover Is Is A Much Sought After Professional Sound Engineer When it comes to sound a good engineer is as valuable as a CPA or a top rated lawyer. There is a marriage between knowledge and feeling that makes those that are the best at what they do within their vocation. Long before James Hoover was a much sought after professional his aunt turned him on to the piano. Today an accomplished piano man himself he will be the first to tell you that it was his aunt’s love of music that remains the greatest influence of his life. He’s recorded Matthew Knowles’ Destiny’s Child over 100 times for instance and teamed with recording studios and artists of all kinds. But it was his Aunt that fostered his thirst for music and then a dedicated junior and senior high school band director that added fuel to the fire. He realized that the discipline that was required was not an effort but yet he did not wish to seek out front man status. Jazz band would soon become a favorite of the young keyboard man. James realized in his formative years that did not have a desire to be a front man but on the other hand when it came to perfecting recorded sound he was all in. A rebellious soul of sorts in those formative years James developed a deep desire for heavy metal and the hard driving rock releases of the 70’s. Van Halen being among his favorites because they presented a commanding full sound. On top of bands like Van Halen and The Allman Brothers James developed a deep appreciation for what Phil Spector was doing at the time as well with The Righteous Brothers. Spector’s wall of sound idea was just what the Righteous Brothers needed and James got right into it. His reputation for being a quick upstart with a solid ear led him to work at Digital Services Recording Studios, one of the hottest studios going at the time. While there he did tour production work for ZZ Top, worked with Depeche Mode, The Backstreet Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Spice Girls, Willie Nelson and Debbie Gibson to name a few. After the company closed James opened Hoover Sound and since has mixed and mastered for such artists as LL Cooper, George Kinney, Rich Cagle, The Lone Star Hippies, Annika Chambers, The Suffers, Sam Barlow, Julia Cozby, Moses Guest, Davi Jay and more. It can also be noted that the man has five placements on television since going on his own. To this day James still enjoys recording but it’s his ear for mixing and mastering that brings artists and labels back over and over again. In closing - Artists, you too can be a muse of sorts. Got an instrument you are not using? Band Directors at all kinds of schools would love to have it for their kids. Learn more about James Hoover www.hooversound.com 16 Music News • May 2021

A third album, Atomic, was released in fall 2001, spawning several singles including “Lipstick and Bruises.” A self-titled album arrived in 2004, marking Lit’s fourth full-length effort (as well as their first release on the Nitrus label). In 2008, drummer Shellenberger was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He died on August 13, 2009 at the age of 39. Nathan Walker was added as the band’s drummer and Lit began work on new material. In 2012, Lit released their fifth studio album, the Butch Walker-produced The View from the Bottom. They dedicated the album to Shellenberger. The band’s sixth album, These Are the Days, appeared at the end of 2017, showcasing a rootsier, countrified sound.

Lit Perform At The Wildcatter Saloon June 4th Lit is considered one of the preeminent bands to have come out of the post-grunge era of the late 90’s and helped define an entire generation of SoCal power punk with hard-charging hits like “My Own Worst Enemy,” “Miserable,” “Zip-Lock,”, and “Lipstick & Bruises.” The band has released 6 worldwide studio albums, including their RIAA Certified Platinum A Place in the Sun, and they are currently writing and recording to release new material. A major player throughout the post-grunge boom, Lit featured the combined talents of frontman A. Jay Popoff, his guitar-playing brother Jeremy, bassist Kevin Baldes, and drummer Allen Shellenberger. The group formed in 1990 in Orange County, California, where it initially performed metal-influenced music under the name Razzle. After changing their name, Lit began embracing a spunky brand of punk-pop that helped attract a local 18 Music News • May 2021

following in California. The group sold out local venues (including Club 369 in Fullerton) and issued two recordings: an EP, Five Smokin’ Tracks from Lit; and the full-length Tripping the Light Fantastic, which arrived during the spring of 1997 and became a college radio hit. Lit then landed a contract with RCA Records, which released the follow-up effort A Place in the Sun two years later. This proved to be Lit’s breakthrough record, as the catchy rock riffs of “My Own Worst Enemy,” “ZipLock,” and “Miserable” all paved the way for platinum sales. With “My Own Worst Enemy” topping the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart, Lit toured the country alongside groups like the Offspring, No Doubt, and Garbage. Furthermore, they performed a set at Woodstock 1999 and earned a spot on the 2000 Vans Warped Tour.

The band has remained one of the most active bands from that era and still consists of three original and primary members including brothers Ajay (lead vocals) and Jeremy Popoff (lead guitar), and Kevin Baldes (bass). Their mega-hit “My Own Worst Enemy” is one of the most broadcasted, covered, karaoke’d, recognizable rock hits of the last 20 years and won them a Billboard Music Award for Modern Rock Song of the Year. Their unforgettable video for “Miserable” featuring Pamela Anderson was one of the top 10 most played songs of 2000. As recently as 2017 Lit found themselves back on the charts hitting #1 on the CMT 12-Pack with their video for “Fast”, from their These Are the Days album. Lit continues to actively tour their “high-octane performances that have thrilled millions of fans across the world.” (Center Stage Magazine). “The common thread that never changes with Lit is that you can tell the Popoff brothers are in the mix,” Jeremy says with pride. “I’m still playing a Fender Telecaster or a Gibson Les Paul down to my knees, through a Marshall amp with an overdrive stomp box pedal, and Ajay still sounds like Ajay.” Their new music promises to deliver the catchy singable Lit rockers they have become known for, all while evolving with their lifelong fans. “We still know how to have a good time,” Ajay says. “We still party together and maybe get into a little trouble here and there. But we also have other things that play into our songs now, like marriage, divorce, kids who are growing up and parents who aren’t getting any younger. We’re evolving as people and learning.”

EP was produced by David Bendeth (producer of Don’t You Fake It). Prior to its release, the band released two of the songs on their page On October 11, 2013, the band revealed their fourth studio album, titled 4, was ‘coming soon’ via their Facebook page. They also revealed that David Bendeth would be producing the LP. Three days later, again through Facebook, the band announced Matt Carter was returning to the band and would be playing lead guitar for 4. On January 1, 2014, the band announced that 4, as well as the rest of their discography, would be released July 4, 2014.

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Perform At The Scout Bar June 4th One of the few screamo bands to land a Top 40 pop hit, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus formed in 2003 in Middleburg, Florida. After writing and rehearsing for 18 months, the bandmembers were urged by several friends to pursue their music seriously. This encouragement led the guys to book themselves several local shows, to the quick embrace of their hometown scene. As the buzz grew, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus recorded their first EP and began relentlessly spreading their name around Florida. Despite a rapidly developing fan base, several subsequent label showcases amounted to nothing and various bandmembers either exited or were booted from the group. Undeterred, the band’s remaining core — vocalist Ronnie Winter and guitarist Duke Kitchens — began to rebuild the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, focusing on a blend of emo-pop, screamo, and alternative rock in the process. Soon completing the quintet were guitarist/vocalist Elias Reidy and bassist Joey Westwood, both of whom had previously played together in a metal band called In Fate’s Hands, as well as drummer Jon Wilkes. A few months after the lineup was solidified, the guys inked 20 Music News • May 2021

a deal with Virgin. Entering the studio with David Bendeth (Hawthorne Heights, Breaking Benjamin) in 2005, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus began crafting their full-length debut. The resulting Don’t You Fake It appeared in July 2006 and was certified gold by the year’s end, propelled by the success of the Top 40 single “Face Down” and the band’s stint on the summer-long Warped Tour. The guys also contributed a track to the video game soundtrack for Madden NFL 2007. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus set to work on a follow-up album in 2007, taking a brief break in early 2008 to launch an acoustic tour of the Eastern Seaboard. Lonely Road was then released in February 2009, three months after the announcement that guitarist Reidy had exited the band’s lineup. Although it proved to be the band’s last release for Virgin Records, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus continued releasing material, beginning with the 2010 EP Hell or High Water and continuing with the group’s third LP, Am I the Enemy? in 2011. On March 15, 2013, the band released an EP titled Et Tu, Brute?. The

This band planned to perform their first rock show in India at the 2016 edition of Saarang, the cultural fest of IIT Madras, on January 9, 2016. In a November 27 post on their official Instagram page, RJA announced their anniversary tour dates. They were one of the first official bands announced for 2017’s Rock on the Range in Columbus, Ohio. In an April 2017 interview, Winter said that after their anniversary tour, the band would head to the studio in southern California to record The Awakening. It would be co-produced by him and his wife, and was to be released in the same year. However, according to coverage by Alternative Press of a post and comments on the band’s Facebook page in July 2017, the new record would be released in 2018, along with a new single and tour in the fall of 2017. It was released on March 30, 2018. In September 2018 an Australian tour was announced to be taking place in December of the same year featuring support from Australian band The Comfort. In December 2018, the band surprised dropped a new song entitled “Land Down Under” which later was confirmed to be a cover song by Men At Work. On August 28, 2020, the band released The Emergency EP containing two previously released singles from 2020, Brace Yourself and A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Called LA along with four new tracks.

Corey Taylor Brings His CMF Tour 2021 To White Oak Music Hall May 22 Best known as the vocalist and songwriter for abrasive, Grammy-winning masked nu-metalheads Slipknot and postgrunge/alt-metallers Stone Sour, Corey Taylor is also an accomplished actor and author, as well as an in-demand collaborator who has worked with contemporaries like Korn, Damageplan, Anthrax, Soulfly, Disturbed, and Code Orange, among others. In 2020 Taylor released his debut solo LP, CMFT, which combined a wide array of genres including hard rock, metal, classic rock, punk, and hip-hop. The loyal Iowan was born in Des Moines and raised in Waterloo by his mother. An early love of science fiction and horror, along with a grandmother who introduced him to rock music, helped set the course for the budding musician, but he endured numerous hardships, including drug addiction and depression, during his late teens. After relocating to Des Moines in the early ’90s, Taylor hooked up with Josh Rand (rhythm guitar), Shawn Economaki (bass), and Joel Ekman (drums) and formed the hard-hitting Stone Sour. Citing influences like Alice in

Chains and Metallica, the group became staples of the Iowa bar circuit, building a loyal local following and recording a pair of well-received demos. In 1995 the band was joined by guitarist Jim Root, who along with Taylor, left Stone Sour two years later to join Slipknot, another Des Moines band that was creating its own kind of buzz. Iowa Far removed from the brooding, thrash-inflected post-grunge of Stone Sour, Slipknot was another kind of beast altogether, an anonymous rock & roll horror show that paired the nihilistic nu-metal shock rock of Marilyn Manson with the bruising, apoplectic rap-metal of Korn. Known as “number eight” — the Halloween mask-adorned members of Slipknot use numbers as stage aliases — Taylor performed his first gig with the group in 1997 and two years later appeared on the band’s platinum-selling eponymous debut. Slipknot soon found themselves at the forefront of the nu-metal scene, achieving success both at home and abroad with gold and platinum efforts like Iowa (2001), the Grammy Award-winning Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) (2004), All Hope Is Gone

(2008), and .5: The Gray Chapter (2014). Despite Slipknot’s enormous success, Taylor found time to revive Stone Sour in the early 2000s, releasing the band’s eponymous debut in 2002. The LP went gold and earned a Grammy nomination, as did 2006’s Come What(ever) May. Fronting two of modern heavy metal’s biggest acts —Slipknot released their sixth long-player, We Are Not Your Kind, in 2019 while Stone Sour issued album number six, Hydrograd, in 2017 — has done little to temper Taylor’s prolificacy. In 2001 he began penning a monthly column for British publication Rock Sound — which he kept up until 2016 — and in 2013 he added acting to his creative arsenal, appearing in the horror films Fear Clinic and Bullied. He published the first of several autobiographical books, Seven Deadly Sins: Settling the Argument Between Born Bad and Damaged Good, in 2012, and in 2020 he issued his debut solo effort, the versatile and aptly named Corey Mother Fucking Taylor, which was released acronymically as CMFT and included the hit singles “CMFT Must Be Stopped” and “Black Eyes Blue.”

Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty but with a bit of a harder edge to it. Lyrically he often writes about his life and therefore his songs often span a lot of real, seemingly personal emotions. There was a White Lion Comeback Album in 2008 with an accompanying tour featuring Mike on vocals and a new, younger White Lion line-up. On October 5, 2009 he released his seventh solo album ‘Mike Tramp and The Rock ‘N’ Roll Circuz’. In 2012, Tramp went on a solo acoustic tour releasing acoustic albums in both 2013 and 2014. He returned with a full band line up in 2015 and in 2017, released the album Maybe Tomorrow, which charted at No. 1 in Denmark. Mike Tramp toured Europe, Netherlands and Italy in the Spring of 2018 with his Band of Brothers. After that some tour dates followed in May. In October 2018, Tramp announced that he’s been working on a new album released in 2019. To add, he played some Denmark shows with his acoustic guitar in between. On November 1, Tramp’s first solo album “Capricorn” was re-released as a special vinyl version. He also performed 2 shows in Zeppelin Bar, Copenhagen to celebrate that. On January 8, 2019, Mike Tramp announced that his new solo album titled Stray From The Flock would be released on March 1. Tramp’s record company Target Records has made the following statement: With 100+ shows planned in 2019 to support the new album – starting off in the US in February and March with 22 shows – and a first single, titled “Dead End Ride”, ready to drop on January the 25th (together with a top-notch video), this will be another great year for Mike Tramp. On January 25, Tramp released the song/video “Dead End Ride” as a first single of the new album. The song went No. 1 on iTunes in Peru the next day.

Mike Tramp Performs at Warehouse Live On June 3 Mike Tramp (Born Michael Trempenau January 14, 1961) is a Danish singer and songwriter who is best known for his work with the hard rock bands White Lion and Freak of Nature. He has released 14 albums, including seven solo albums. Micheal Trempenau was born in Denmark, and grew up in Vesterbro with his single mother and two brothers, Dennis and Kim. Mike started his musical career singing in a youth group club in Copenhagen called Vesterbro Ungdomsgård, and appears on their first album: Vi lever på Vesterbro (1974). Later he was the lead singer of the Danish pop band Mabel, who recorded four albums and was popular in Denmark and Spain, and Mike quickly became of “teen idol” status. In 1978 Mabel won the Danish Melody Contest with the song Boom Boom and represented Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest that year. Mabel moved to New York City in the late 1970s to pursue a harder rock career. even changing to a more appropriate band name (“Studs”), but soon broke up. After the demise of Mabel, Tramp met Vito Bratta, guitarist for the band Dreamer, and they formed White Lion. After White Lion broke up in 1992 Mike formed the rock band “Freak of Nature”, which released three albums from 1992 to 1994. In 1997 Tramp started a respected career as a solo artist. album’s second single, went to number one, and “I Got You” reached number five. In 1989, Yoakam released a compilation album, Just Lookin’ for a Hit, which went gold. “Long White Cadillac,” taken from the collection, stalled at number 35 in the fall of 1989.

Dwight Yoakam Performs At The Arena Theater For Two Nights, May 27 & 28 With his stripped-down approach to traditional honky tonk and Bakersfield country, Dwight Yoakam helped return country music to its roots in the late ’80s. Like his idols Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams, Yoakam never played by Nashville’s rules; consequently, he never dominated the charts like his contemporary Randy Travis. Then again, Travis never played around with the sound and style of country music like Yoakam. On each of his records, he twists around the form enough to make it seem like he doesn’t respect all of country’s traditions. Appropriately, his core audience was composed mainly of roots rock and rock & roll fans, not the mainstream country audience. Nevertheless, he was frequently able to chart in the country Top Ten, and he remained one of the most respected and adventurous recording country artists well into the ’90s. Born in Kentucky but raised in Ohio, Yoakam learned how to play guitar at the age of six. As a child, he listened to his mother’s record collection, honing in on the traditional country of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, as well as the Bakersfield honky tonk of Buck Owens. When he was in high school, Yoakam played with a variety of bands, playing everything from country to rock & roll. After completing high school, Yoakam briefly attended Ohio State University, but he dropped out and moved to Nashville in the late ’70s with the intent of becoming a recording artist. At the time he moved to Nashville, the town was in the throes of the pop-oriented urban cowboy movement and had no interest in his updated honky tonk. While in Nashville, he met guitarist Pete Anderson, who shared a similar taste in music. The pair moved out to Los Angeles, where they found a more appreciative audience than they did in 28 Music News • May 2021

Nashville. In L.A., Yoakam and Anderson didn’t just play country clubs, they played the same nightclubs that punk and post-punk rock bands like X, the Dead Kennedys, Los Lobos, the Blasters, and the Butthole Surfers did. What Yoakam had in common with rock bands like X and the Blasters was similar musical influences; they all drew from ’50s rock & roll and country. In comparison to the polished music coming out of Nashville, Yoakam’s stripped-down, direct revivalism seemed radical. The cowpunks, as they were called, that attended Yoakam’s shows provided an invaluable support for his fledgling career. Yoakam released an independent EP, A Town South of Bakersfield, in 1984, which received substantial airplay on Los Angeles college and alternative radio stations. The EP also helped him land a record contract with Reprise Records. Dwight’s full-length debut album, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc., was released in 1986 and was an instant sensation. Rock and country critics praised it and it earned airplay on college stations across America. More importantly, it was a hit on the country charts, as its first single, a cover of Johnny Horton’s “Honky Tonk Man,” climbed to number three in the spring, followed by the number four “Guitars, Cadillacs” in the summer. The album would eventually go platinum. Hillbilly Deluxe, Dwight’s 1987 follow-up, was equally successful, spawning four Top Ten hits: “Little Sister,” “Little Ways,” “Please, Please Baby,” and “Always Late with Your Kisses.” In 1988, Yoakam had his first number one hit with “Streets of Bakersfield,” a cover of a Buck Owens song recorded with Owens himself. It was the first single off his third album, Buenos Noches from a Lonely Room, which continued his streak of Top Ten hits. “I Sang Dixie,” the

Although his 1990 album If There Was a Way didn’t have as many Top Ten hits, it was a major success; it was his first album since his debut to go platinum. This Time, released in the spring of 1993, was an even bigger hit, spawning three number two singles — “Ain’t That Lonely Yet,” “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere,” and “Fast as You” — and going platinum. After its release, Yoakam was silent for two years, returning in the summer of 1995 with Dwight Live, which didn’t set the charts on fire. In the fall of that year, he released his sixth album, Gone, which went gold by the spring of 1996, although it didn’t produce any major country hits. After 1997’s Under the Covers, a collection of cover songs, Yoakam returned with the all-new A Long Way Home in 1998. Another compilation, Last Chance for a Thousand Years: Greatest Hits from the ’90s, was released in 1999; its newly recorded version of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” became Yoakam’s biggest hit in six years, even hitting the lower reaches of the pop charts thanks to its exposure in a khakis commercial. Two albums followed in 2000: dwightyoakamacoustic.net, a barebones, all-acoustic revisitation of Yoakam’s back catalog; and the more standard studio project Tomorrow’s Sounds Today, which featured further collaborations with Buck Owens and a cover of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me.” In 2001, Yoakam debuted as a writer and director, also issuing the soundtrack South of Heaven, West of Hell to accompany it. Two years later, he debuted on a new label (Audium) with Population Me, while Reprise issued the compilation In Others’ Words to compete with it. In 2004 he released Dwight’s Used Records, a 14-track anthology of duets that appeared on other artists’ albums, unreleased covers, and cuts Yoakam contributed to various tribute compilations. An album of all new material, the self-produced Blame the Vain, followed in 2005 along with the live album Live from Austin, TX. An album of Buck Owens covers, Dwight Sings Buck, appeared in 2007. Released in 2012, 3 Pears — Yoakam’s first album since returning to Warner Bros. Records after a trio of releases for New West Records, and his first album of original material since 2005’s Blame the Vain — featured a pair of Beck productions, “A Heart Like Mine” and “Missing Heart,” recorded at Beck’s home studio in California. 3 Pears debuted at 18 on the Billboard Top 200, his highest chart position ever. Three years later, Yoakam returned with Second Hand Heart. In 2016, Yoakam took a step back even deeper into country music traditions with Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars..., his first bluegrass album, featuring high lonesome reworkings of some of his best-known tunes.

With their hot-rodded fusion of dazzling high-speed guitar runs, thundering rhythms, high-profile swagger, and lyrical smirk, the Reverend Horton Heat are perhaps the most popular psychobilly artists of all time, their recognition rivaled only by the esteem generated by the genre’s founders, the Cramps. The Reverend (as both the band and its guitar-playing frontman are known) built a strong cult following during the ’90s through constant touring, manic showmanship, and a barbed sense of humor. The latter was nothing new in the world of psychobilly, of course, and Heat’s music certainly maintained the trashy aesthetic of his spiritual forebears. The Reverend’s true innovation was updating the psychobilly sound for the alternative rock era. In their hands, it had roaring distorted guitars, rocked as hard as any punk band, and didn’t look exclusively to the pop culture of the past for its style or subject matter. Most of the Reverend’s lyrics were gonzo celebrations of sex, drugs, booze, and cars, and true to his name, his early concerts often featured mock sermons in the style of a rural revivalist preacher. On their 1992 debut Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em, the group established the template of their no-frills, highintensity approach to rockabilly, and though celebrity producers helped beef up the sound of their next two albums — Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers on 1993’s The Full Custom Gospel Sounds and Ministry’s Al Jourgensen on 1994’s Liquor in the Front — the Reverend’s essential style changed little with time. They would explore a more introspective side on 2004’s Revival, embrace their country influences on 2009’s Laughin’ & Cryin’ with the Reverend Horton Heat, and add a pianist to the mix on 2018’s Whole New Life, but on-stage and in the studio, Jim Heath and his bandmates could always be depended upon to deliver some of the twangy fire that their fans loved. Reverend Horton Heat — the man, not the band — was born James C. Heath in Corpus Christi, Texas. Growing up, he played in local rock cover bands around the area but was more influenced by Sun Records’ rockabilly, electric Chicago blues, and country mavericks like Junior Brown, Willie Nelson, and Merle Travis. According to legend, he spent several years in a juvenile correction facility, and at 17 was supporting himself as a street musician and pool shark (according to the Reverend, however, the story was fabricated by Sub Pop to add color to his greaser image). Heath eventually moved to Dallas, where he found work at a club in Deep Ellum. There, he gave his first performance in 1985 as Reverend Horton Heat, christened as such by the club’s owner. Heat played the city’s blues club circuit for a while, performing mostly for polite crowds and swing dancing enthusiasts. Craving the excitement of a rock & roll show, and seeking a more financially rewarding avenue to help with his child support payments, Heat revamped his sound and moved into rock and punk venues. In 1989, he added bassist Jimbo Wallace to his band, and drummer Patrick “Taz” Bentley soon completed the lineup. Reverend Horton Heat were a big hit around the area, and soon began touring extensively all around the country. They ultimately landed a deal with the prominent Seattle-based indie label Sub Pop, and in 1991 issued their debut album, Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em, which featured fan favorites like “Eat Steak,” “Marijuana,” “Bad Reputation,” and “Love Whip.” The band kept building its audience through steady touring, and received considerable media attention for 1993’s sophomore effort The Full Custom Gospel Sounds of the Reverend Horton Heat. Produced by the Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes, it spawned a minor MTV hit in “Wiggle Stick,” and also included Heat staples “400 Bucks” and “Bales of Cocaine.” Having amassed a significant underground following, Horton Heat signed a major-label deal with Interscope in 1994, and debuted that year with a joint release between Interscope and Sub Pop, Liquor in the Front (subtitled “Poker in the Rear” for anyone who missed the first double-entendre). This time around, Heat had an even more unlikely producer in Ministry’s Al Jourgensen; he also had major-label bucks, which contributed to a ratcheting up of the hell-raising lifestyle he often sang about, and eventually the temporary worsening of a drinking problem. In the meantime, drummer Bentley left the band later in 1994 to join Tenderloin; he was replaced by Scott “Chernobyl” Churilla. Horton Heat returned in 1996 with It’s Martini Time, which featured several nods to the swing and lounge revival scenes emerging 26 Music News • May 34 October 2021 2020

Reverend Horton Heat Performs 4 Free Shows At The House Of Blues May 8, 15, 22, & 29 around that time; as a result, the title track became a minor hit, and the album became their first to chart in the Top 200. That year, Heat made his small-screen acting debut thanks to his on-stage preacher shtick, which earned him a guest spot on the acclaimed drama Homicide: Life on the Street. The following year, he appeared on The Drew Carey Show. The band’s final major-label album, Space Heater, arrived in 1998; after its release, the gigantic label mergers of that year resulted in the band being dropped from Interscope. In the wake of their exit, Sub Pop released a 24-song best-of compilation, Holy Roller, in 1999, covering their entire output up to that point. Undaunted, they continued to tour, and in 2000 recorded the more straightforward rockabilly album Spend a Night in the Box for the Time Bomb label. This time, Butthole Surfers’ Paul Leary manned the production booth. The Reverend next surfaced on Artemis Records with 2002’s Lucky 7, his hardest-edged album in quite some time. Its single, “Like a Rocket,” was selected as the theme song for that year’s Daytona 500 race. Buoyed by the publicity, Heat signed a new deal with Yep Roc in 2003. His first album for the label, Revival, appeared the following year, as did a live DVD. In 2005, he gave the world its first psychobilly holiday album, We Three Kings. Three years later, the frontman unveiled his side project Reverend Organdrum, which explored a wider range of retro sounds with Hi-Fi Stereo. In 2006, Scott Churilla left the band, and Paul Simmons became the group’s drummer. Laughin’ & Cryin’ with Reverend Horton Heat, a countryleaning set, appeared from Yep Roc in 2009, followed by 2012's 25 to Life, a live documentary/greatest-hits CD/DVD box set released to coincide with the group’s 25th anniversary. After the release of 25 to Life, Scott Churilla returned to the lineup, and stayed with the band until 2017, when he was succeeded by drummer Arjuna “RJ” Contreras. In 2018, the Reverend Horton Heat became a quartet with the addition of full-time piano player Matt Jordan; Contreras and Jordan would make their recording debut with the band on their 2018 album Brand New Life.

Roger Creager Performs At Dosey Doe On May 26 Roger Creager will be performing this month at The Dosey Doe Big Barn in The Woodlands on May 26th. Roger Creager is an adventurist; he does not like to sit still while the world passes by. Whether it’s climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, jumping off his boat to snorkel with wild dolphins, snow skiing in the Rockies, catching tuna 100 miles from shore, piloting his airplane to far-off concerts, spear-fishing around oil rigs, scuba diving coral reefs, surfing in Costa Rica, or playing music through the Italian countryside, he tries to get the most out of what the world has to offer. All of this finds its way into Roger’s music and live shows. His passion for life invigorates everyone around him including his fan base. Those who get hooked on his charisma and high energy come back show after show, year after year, and record after record. Roger is very fortunate that his music career allows him this lifestyle. But he gives it back by putting his life experiences and his infectious high energy and zeal for adventure right back into his songwriting and performances. Creager may travel the world, but he never strays far from his small-town South Texas roots and his music encompasses all of him. The new EP “Gulf Coast Time” is certainly a slice out of Creager life. Roger grew up outside of Corpus Christi and has always maintained a love of 36

saltwater. Whether he’s happy, sad, bored, or just in need of inspiration, you can bet this artist will be somewhere breathing sea air. Soaring toward the top of the Texas music scene, award-winner Roger Creager has exhibited the perseverance and stick-with-it quality that is necessary when blazing one’s own trail in country music. By the time he was six years old, Creager had set his heart on creating country music. Young Creager would sing at the top of his lungs when by himself, and was often found acting like a conductor throughout his school years. He began his formal musical training while in second grade playing the piano, and picked up the guitar during high school. During his teens he continued singing, mostly to himself due to shyness, and played with songwriting but didn’t share his efforts with others. Still too shy to attack a musical career, Creager headed for college and earned his business degree from Sam Houston State University. From there he headed toward Aggieland and earned his degree in agriculture. Aggieland throbbed with the heartbeat of Texas country music, and Creager thrived there. His songwriting and singing were maturing, as was his confidence. He was 26 when he began performing for audiences Yet, when it came to a career, he aimed at the security of a steady paycheck and headed for corporate

America. He worked as an accountant in Houston, TX for several years. Then the longing to fulfill his inner goals took hold and he went back to College Station, TX, rather than Nashville, immersing himself in the Texas music revolution full-time. His first year there, Creager played piano in a local band, and then formed a cover band with Justin Pollard (who went on to play drums with Pat Green). It was slow going for their band, and after Pollard left to join Green, Creager decided to surge ahead and mold his own future. His band, the Roger Creager Band, consists of Matt Baker (lead guitar),Troy Brown (piano), Matt Medearis (drums), Jason Swindol (fiddle, mandolin), and Stormy Cooper (bass guitar). Kirby Standley is their tour manager; Chris Leal, the merchandising manager. Prior members of this close-knit band are Scott Owen (guitar), Joel Schoepf (now with Jack Ingram), and Benny Pena. Merging his musical talent with his business background, Creager also successfully created his own publishing company, No Cable Music, for releasing his own CDs. His traditional country music had a distinctive twist that resonated with the crowds, and he was named Entertainer of the Year at the 2001 Texas Music Awards. Having Fun All Wrong (featuring “Everclear,” the anthem for Texas country music) and I Got the Guns both came out in 2002. An immediate success, I Got the Guns debuted on the Lone Star Music Charts at number one, reflecting Creager’s ability to stir emotions across the genres. Long Way to MexicoCreager’s third CD, Long Way to Mexico, was released in September, 2003, and mixes the rhythms of country with Cajun, jazz, and Latin beats. He co-wrote some of the songs with Radney Foster, a top country music songwriter. His goal was to have the album generate a swirling range of emotions in the listeners. This quality is becoming a trademark for Creager. Creager, a strong believer in setting goals, big goals, for himself, also believes in constantly monitoring and rearranging those goals. He pours love, enthusiasm, hard work and long hours into all aspects of his musical business, with his main goal being to keep on doing exactly what he’s doing right now. He’s living his dream — soaring to the top of the Texas music scene.
