War Perform at The Clarion at Brazosport College Feb. 1 One of the most popular funk groups of the ’70s, War were also one of the most eclectic, freely melding soul, Latin, jazz, blues, reggae, and rock influences into an effortlessly funky whole. Although War’s lyrics were sometimes political in nature (in keeping with their racially integrated lineup), their music almost always had a sunny, laid-back vibe emblematic of their Southern California roots. War kept the groove loose, and they were given over to extended jamming; in fact, many of their studio songs were edited together out of longer improvisations. Even if the jams sometimes got indulgent, they demonstrated War’s truly group-minded approach: no one soloist or vocalist really stood above the others (even though all were clearly talented), and their grooving interplay placed War in the top echelon of funk ensembles. The roots of War lay in an R&B cover band called the Creators. Guitarist Howard Scott and drummer Harold Brown started the group in 1962 while attending high school in the Compton area, and three years later, the lineup also featured keyboardist Leroy “Lonnie” Jordan, bassist Morris “B.B.” Dickerson, and saxophonist/ flutist Charles Miller (all of them sang). The group had an appetite for different sounds right from the start, ranging from R&B to blues to the Latin music they’d absorbed while growing up in the racially mixed ghettos of Los Angeles. Despite a two-year hiatus following Scott’s induction into the service, they released several singles locally on Dore Records (their first, “Burn Baby Burn,” was with singer Johnny Hamilton), and backed jazz saxophonist Tjay Contrelli, formerly of the psychedelic band Love; they also went by the names the Romeos and Señor Soul during this period. In 1968, the band was reconfigured and dubbed Nightshift; Peter Rosen was the new bassist, and percussionist Thomas Sylvester “Papa Dee” Allen, who’d previously played with Dizzy Gillespie, came onboard, along with two more horn players. B.B. Dickerson later returned when Rosen died of a drug overdose. In 1969, Nightshift began backing football star Deacon Jones (a defensive end for the L.A. Rams) during his singing performances in a small club, where they were discovered by producer Jerry Goldstein. Goldstein suggested the band as possible collaborators to former Animals lead singer Eric Burdon, who along with Danish-born harmonica player Lee Oskar (born Oskar Levetin Hansen) had been searching L.A. clubs for a new act. Eric Burdon Declares “War” After witnessing Nightshift in concert, Burdon took charge of the group. He gave them a provocative new name, War, and replaced the two extra horn players with Oskar. To develop material, War began playing marathon concert jams over which Burdon would free-associate lyrics. In August 1969, Burdon and War entered the studio for the first time, and after some more touring, they re-
corded their first album, 1970’s Eric Burdon Declares War. The spaced-out daydream of “Spill the Wine” was a smash hit, climbing to number three and establishing the group in the public eye. A second album, The Black Man’s Burdon, was released before the year’s end, and over the course of two records it documented the group’s increasingly long improvisations (as well as Burdon’s growing tendency to ramble). It also featured War’s first recorded vocal effort on “They Can’t Take Away Our Music.” Burdon’s contract allowed War to be signed separately, and they soon inked a deal with United Artists, intending to record on their own as well as maintaining their partnership with Burdon. However, Burdon — citing exhaustion — suddenly quit during the middle of the group’s European tour in 1971, spelling the beginning of the end; he rejoined War for a final U.S. tour and then left for good. All Day MusicWar had already issued their self-titled, Burdon-less debut at the beginning of 1971, but it flopped. Before the year was out, they recorded another effort, All Day Music, which spawned their first Top 40 hits in “All Day Music” and “Slippin’ Into Darkness”; the album itself was a million-selling Top 20 hit. War really hit their stride on the follow-up album, 1972’s The World Is a Ghetto; boosted by a sense of multi-cultural harmony, it topped the charts and sold over three million copies, making it the best-selling album of 1973. It also produced two Top Ten smashes in “The Cisco Kid” (which earned them a fervent following in the Latino community) and the title ballad. 1973’s Deliver the Word was another million-selling hit, reaching the Top Ten and producing the Top Ten single “Gypsy Man” and another hit in “Me and Baby Brother.” However, it had less of the urban grit that War prided themselves on; while taking some time to craft new material and rethink their direction, War consolidated their success with the double concert LP War Live, recorded over four nights in Chicago during 1974. Why Can’t We Be Friends? Released in 1975, Why Can’t We Be Friends returned to the sound of The World Is a Ghetto with considerable success. The bright, anthemic title track hit the Top Ten, as did “Low Rider,” an irresistible slice of Latin funk that became the group’s first (and only) R&B chart-topper, and still stands as their best-known tune. 1976 brought the release of a greatest-hits package featuring the new song “Summer,” which actually turned out to be War’s final Top Ten pop hit; the same year, Oskar released his first solo album, backed by members of Santana. A double-LP compilation of jams and instrumentals appeared on the Blue Note jazz label in 1977, under the title Platinum Jazz; it quickly became one of the best-selling albums in Blue Note history, and produced an R&B-chart smash with an edited version of “L.A. Sunshine.” Galaxy Yet disco was beginning to

Disturbed Perform at Toyota Center January 28 Disturbed is excited to announce the Evolution Tour, the band’s worldwide headline tour, starting January in North America and running through May in Europe. Disturbed is also pleased to announce that Three Days Grace will be the joining the tour in North America. Disturbed will be touring behind their new album, Evolution, which arrived October 19th of last year and has already yielded the No. 1 mainstream rock song “Are You Ready”. “We’re gonna try to squeeze in as much as we can in all of 2019, and we’ll see if it takes us into the following year or where we’re at when next year ends,” Disturbed guitarist Dan Donegan recently said about their touring plans for next year. The Grammy-nominees are expected to play popular cuts like “The Sound Of Silence,” “Down With The Sickness” and “Inside The Fire,” mixed with new tracks off the new album. Do not expect to see frontman David Draiman’s chin piercings at any of these shows, as they have been retired. The vocalist has worn the chin jewellery for years, but in recent publicity shots for their upcoming studio album Evolution, Draiman has removed them… and now he’s explained why.

He tells German website Deutsche Welle: “They’re kind of a pain in the butt, to be honest. It just felt weird walking around like a 45-year-old Hot Topic kid. I just felt it was time.” The band’s new studio album follows their 2015 post-hiatus comeback LP, Immortalized. Disturbed recruited songwriter/ producer Kevin Churko to help them build the album during their
recording sessions in Las Vegas. Churko was also involved in producing a pair of previously shared 2018 releases from Five Finger Death Punch on their And Justice for None LP and Halestorm’s Vicious. Back in August, Draiman called Evolution – the follow-up to 2015’s Immortalized – “our Black Album”, in reference to Metallica’s classic 1991 record. Asked about those comments, Draiman replies: “It’s simply a matter of something that every rock and metal band aspires to – they all want to write that record that takes them to the next level. “That’s what the Black Album did for Metallica and that’s what I’m hoping this record does for us – just in the sense that I hope we can have a similar type of stars aligning and fate taking a hand and things really exploding the way we hope it will.” A hard-hitting, multi-platinum-selling heavy metal outfit based out of Chicago, Illinois, Disturbed emerged in the late ’90s with an aggressive blend of hard rock and alternative and nu metal. Fortified by a distinct melodic complexity and the uncompromising swagger of frontman David Draiman, the band exploded onto the scene in 2000 with The Sickness, which peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200, and was eventually certified five-times platinum. They broke huge in 2002 with their sophomore effort, Believe, which, like all four of their subsequent offerings, debuted at number one. Disturbed went into a four-year hiatus in 2011 to focus on various side projects, but returned in 2015 with the chart-topping Immortalized, confirming their status as one of the genre’s most commercially successful acts. Disturbed came together through the matching of a band with a singer. Longtime friends Dan Donegan (guitar), Mike Wengren (drums), and Fuzz (bass) played together in Chicago for some time before hooking up with singer David Draiman around 1997. Draiman had grown up in a religious family against which he rebelled, being expelled from five boarding schools in his adolescence. His anger found an outlet in the thrashing sound of Disturbed, who built up a following on Chicago’s South Side before a demo tape led to their signing to Giant Records, which released their debut album, The Sickness, in March 2000. Disturbed gained more fans and exposure playing the main stage of the 2001 Ozzfest, then broke away to do their own self-described “victory lap” around the U.S. that fall. Also during this period, they managed to record a vicious new version of wrestler Steve Austin’s theme song that was so good it managed to receive radio play, and they were one of the bands announced to work on a high-profile Faith No More tribute album. Disturbed stepped into the studio after stepping off the road and began work on a new disc that would reflect their growth as a band. Feeling experimental, the bandmembers worked with producer Johnny K and mixer Andy Wallace in order to create an album that could compare to other classic metal records they admired. Amplifying their fondness for groups like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Pantera, and Soundgarden, Believe was released in the fall of 2002 and was recognized as a heavier, more varied, and ultimately superior record to their debut, ultimately reaching the top of the Billboard 200. After completing a tour to support the album, Fuzz left the band and was replaced by former Union Underground member John Moyer. The tour document Music as a Weapon II appeared in 2004, followed by the ambitious studio full-length Ten Thousand Fists in September 2005. Dedicated to late Pantera and Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell, and featuring a rollicking cover of Genesis’ “Land of Confusion,” it marked the second consecutive number one debut for the group, as well as the studio debut for Moyer. Released in 2008, the darker and more textural Indestructible saw the group taking over its own production duties. It netted Disturbed their first Grammy nomination, and once again enjoyed an uncontested run at the top of the charts. They went the self-production route again on 2010’s Asylum, which landed them their fourth successive number one debut, but conflicts within the group were coming to a head, and in 2011, after issuing a collection of rarities and B-sides titled The Lost Children, Disturbed officially went on hiatus. Disturbed: Live at Red Rocks During their time apart, Moyer joined Adrenaline Mob and formed Art of Anarchy (with Scott Weiland as lead singer), Draiman started an industrial metal band called Device, and Donegan and Wengren formed Fight or Flight. After a dinner meeting between Draiman and Donegan in early 2014, the band began hatching plans to return. The duo wrote songs together in the same room for the first time since 2001, and recording sessions were soon booked. Working with producer Kevin Churko in Las Vegas, their next album harked back to a classic heavy metal sound. Immortalized was released in August 2015 and became their fifth consecutive studio album to top the Billboard 200. Released in 2016, the Live at Red Rocks concert LP captured the group’s August 15 performance at the storied Colorado amphitheater. “Are You Ready,” the first single from their forthcoming seventh studio album, Evolution, arrived in 2018. Billed as a tribute to recently deceased contemporaries Chester Bennington of Linkin Park and Vinnie Paul of Pantera, it also marked the return of Moyer, who had left Disturbed in 2011.

Blackberry Smoke Perform at White Oak Music Hall January 26 Veteran rock band Blackberry Smoke will head out on a 22-date North American tour this winter in support of their latest studio album, 2018’s Find a Light. The rural-rock band from Atlanta will embark on the first of their 2019 headlining tour dates beginning on Jan. 24 in Mississippi and will continue rocking out for fans until Feb. 22 with a final show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. They will be performing in Houston at White Oak Music Hall on January 26. The band released Find a Light back on April 6 via 3 Legged Records. The 13-track, guitar-friendly LP features appearances by similar artists like The Wood Brothers and Robert Randolph on that magical pedal-steel of his. The band followed the studio project up with the release of The Southern Ground Sessions EP back in late October. The six-song EP features mostly acoustic versions of various track initially included on Find a Light. They’ve spent nearly all of 2018 touring and performing around the globe in support of their new projects. These performances celebrate a landmark year for Blackberry Smoke, which saw the release of their sixth-studio album, Find A Light (stream/purchase here) as well as a new acoustic EP, The Southern Ground Sessions (stream/purchase here). Find A Light was released last April and debuted as the best-selling Country and Americana/Folk album in the country and entered at #3 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and #2 on the Billboard Americana/Folk Albums chart. Of the album, NPR Music praises, “…Find a Light pushes the envelope while providing that famous Blackberry Smoke autonomy, delivered with soulful vocals, haunting harmonies and kick ass songs,” while Relix declares, “Blackberry Smoke have long been heirs to the
road-warrior mantle established by their classicrock and country heroes. And, with their sixth full-length album, Find A Light, the quintet has now firmly established an authentic legacy of their own.” Following the album’s release, Blackberry Smoke returned to the studio and recorded The Southern Ground Sessions. Created as an accompaniment to Find A Light, the 6-song EP was recorded live at Southern Ground studio in Nashville, TN and features acoustic versions of five album tracks as well as a rendition of Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky” featuring Amanda Shires. Of the EP, Rolling Stone Country praises, “Blackberry Smoke’s crunchy Southern rock may be made for fuzzed-out electric guitars, but their songs sure do translate well to being played acoustically,” while Guitar World states, “With the new EP, a band that has defied critics to pigeonhole them have further proven that there is no one genre that can contain their versatile sound.” Blackberry Smoke has evolved from rough-edged club act to arena-ready rock ‘n’ roll juggernauts, whilesteadily extending and expanding the Southern rock tradition. Since the group’s formation in 2000, theband has never shied away from hard work, playing more than 250 shows a year and building an ever-expanding audience on the strength of its live shows. In addition to winning fans and friends throughoutthe United States, they’ve toured Europe multiple times and performed for the first time ever in Australia in 2016 to sold-out crowds. Along the way, Blackberry Smoke has found time to record ahandful of independent releases, including the albums Bad Luck Ain’t No Crime, Little Piece of Dixie andThe Whippoorwill, plus a pair of EPs, the concert DVD “Live at the Georgia Theatre,” the live CD/DVD setLeave A Scar

and their latest project Holding All the Roses, the first album the band feels properlycaptured their musical essence. Additionally, the band has had songs featured in movie and video gamesoundtracks, including EA Sports’ Madden NFL 16, performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno andConan and toured with and befriended idols such as The Marshall Tucker Band, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrdand George Jones. Building on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Southern rock template with a good dose of outlaw honky tonk country and a little bit of bluegrass, gospel, and R&B mixed in, Blackberry Smoke (singer/guitarist Charlie Starr, guitarist/singer Paul Jackson, bassist/singer Richard Turner, keyboardist Brandon Still, and drummer Brit Turner) formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000 and quickly built a loyal fan base on the Southern tour circuit, opening for such top-tier acts as Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, the Zac Brown Band, George Jones, and others. The group released a debut album, Bad Luck Ain’t No Crime, in 2004
on Cock of the Walk Records, then followed it with the self-released EP New Honky Tonk Bootlegs in 2008. A second EP, Little Piece of Dixie, appeared from Big Karma Records that same year. A full-length album, this one also called Little Piece of Dixie, was released in 2009 by BamaJam Records. The band then signed with Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Records, which released The Whippoorwill in 2012. The Whippoorwill was picked up by Earache, who formally signed the band in 2013. A deluxe live audio and video package entitled Leave a Scar: Live North Carolina was issued in the summer of 2014. Holding All the Roses Later that year, the band left Brown’s label and signed a deal with Rounder in the U.S. (Earache remained the group’s European label). Taking a short break from touring, they entered the studio with producer Brendan O’Brien and emerged less than two weeks later with Holding All the Roses, then

MUSIC NEWS Sevendust and Tremonti will be coming together for a special 2019 tour that will kick off at The Scout Bar on February 1. The 2019 tour is in support of All I See Is War, the band’s 12th studio album to date. The album peaked in the top 20 on the Rock & Metal Albums chart and features the singles “Dirty” and “Unforgiven” as well as the standout track “Not Original.” “Dirty” became a hit for the band reaching No. 17 on the Mainstream Rock airplay chart. Tremonti released their first-ever concept record, A Dying Machine, just last year. “All I See Is War”, which came out in May of last year is the follow-up to 2015’s “Kill The Flaw” was recorded at Studio Barbarosa in Gotha, Florida with producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette, who has previously worked with ALTER BRIDGE and SLASH, among others. SEVENDUST’s new disc is the group’s first for Rise Records, the Oregon-based metal and hard rock label which was purchased by BMG in 2015. In 2016, SEVENDUST received its firstever Grammy nomination after two decades together as a band. “Thank You”, the debut single from “Kill The Flaw”, got the nod for “Best Metal Performance”. Sevendust recently released the music video for their single “Unforgiven,” off 2018’s All I See Is War. The Scott Hansen-directed music video centers around the concept that “the world is rebuilding and the youth will be the ones to keep mankind going long after the adults are no longer around, a message that has been shared throughout society for decades.” Atlanta-based quintet Sevendust were one of the most prominent late-’90s nu-metal acts, rising above contemporaries with an aggressive blend of bottom-heavy riffs and soulful, accessible melodies delivered by vocalist Lajon Witherspoon. Over the years, the band would

balance the raw energy and brutality of early albums like 1997’s Sevendust and 1999’s Home with increasingly atmospheric production and even late-era acoustic sets on releases like Time Travelers & Bonfires (2014) and Kill the Flaw (2015), home to the Grammy-nominated single “Thank You.” Mortal Kombat: More Kombat The band — comprising frontman Witherspoon, John Connolly (guitar), Clint Lowery (guitar), Vince Hornsby (bass), and Morgan Rose (drums) — first appeared in 1995 as Crawlspace, releasing the single “My Ruin” on the Mortal Kombat: More Kombat soundtrack. Shortly thereafter, the group changed its name to Sevendust and released a 1997 self-titled debut, home to the breakthrough singles “Black” and “Bitch.” Two years later, they issued the gold-selling sophomore set Home (TVT), which featured their mainstream rock hit “Denial.” As their audience grew, they played over 800 shows alongside such groups as Korn, Godsmack, Disturbed, and Metallica, even making an appearance at Woodstock ’99. Their
angst-ridden third album, the aptly titled Animosity, appeared in fall 2001 and landed in the Top 30 on the Billboard 200. Seasons followed in 2003, their highest-charting album to date and last with TVT. Next In late December 2004, word surfaced that Lowery had left the band, and those rumors proved true the following February when Sevendust announced ex-Snot guitarist Sonny Mayo as Lowery’s replacement. (Lowery, a cofounder of Sevendust, eventually surfaced in the hard rock supergroup Dark New Day.) Sevendust’s fifth album and first self-produced effort, Next, appeared in October 2005 on Winedark Records. The record failed to sell as much as its predecessors and Sevendust later signed to Asylum Records, issuing Alpha in March 2007. Alpha fared better than Next, climbing to number 14 on the Billboard charts and paving the way for the band’s seventh effort. Chapter VII: Hope and Sorrow arrived a year later and featured appearances by Chris Daughtry, Myles Kennedy, and Mark Tremonti. Cold Day Memory At this time, the band parted ways with Mayo, welcoming Lowery back to Sevendust and restoring their original lineup. The reunited crew followed with Cold Day Memory in 2010. Landing just outside the Top Ten, it was their highest-charting set to date, yielding the trio of mainstream rock hits “Unraveling,” “Forever,” and “Last Breath.” Their ninth album, Black Out the Sun, arrived in 2013, topping the hard rock chart. All I See Is War Looking to change things up, Sevendust stripped away their metal edge for their next effort, issuing an album of acoustic tracks. Time Travelers & Bonfires, released in the spring of 2014, debuted at number 18 on the Billboard 200. Bouncing back to basics a year later, the group returned with the heavy yet atmospheric Kill the Flaw, which included the Grammy-nominated single “Thank You.” After touring, they returned to the studio to record their 12th album. Produced by Michael Baskette (Stone Temple Pilots, Incubus), All I See Is War arrived in May 2018 on Rise Records. Mark Tremonti is one of the hardest-working musicians in rock, as guitarist of Alter Bridge
and frontman of his namesake band Tremonti, not to mention a member of the currently inactive multiplatinum group Creed. His most recent release is the Tremonti album A Dying Machine, a fascinating concept disc that centers on artificial intelligence and is accompanied by a novel of the same name co-authored by Tremonti himself. Well, I was on tour in Hungary and about to go onstage — I had about 20 minutes until stage time — and I sat down with my guitar. I started playing a chord progression and singing over it, and the words “you’re a dying machine” came out. Within that 20 minutes, I wrote three of the parts for that song. A story developed in my head about a conversation between a man and this being that was created to love him, and doesn’t know anything else but to love him. As the years go by she obsesses; she’s stronger than him and going to live longer than him. In the end, it turns out…it’s not a good ending for him. Anyway, once I looked at that story I figured that I was having so much fun with that plot, I tried to open my mind and see if I could continue on that plot. I had fun with it, and then I decided that maybe I’d do three or four song concept record within a record. Once I got those songs done, I thought I’d see it through to the end. People have asked me throughout my career, “Is this a concept record? Is that a concept record,” and it’s always been “no.” I’ve never really had any interest in it until I wrote the song “A Dying Machine.” Once the record was almost finished, I said, “You know what, I’ve got this book idea, and I want to get a book published one day.” I’ve always been a massive reader and I thought it would be a huge accomplishment. I thought, “If I’m going to do it, I’ll try to do it now.” I decided to put the novel together to accompany the album. The thrash-oriented solo project of Mark Tremonti, the Grammy-winning lead guitarist of Alter Bridge (and formerly Creed), was formed in 2010 as an outlet for the prolific songwriter’s material that wasn’t suitable for his main band. Recruiting former Submersed members Eric Friedman and Garrett Whitlock, he went into the studio in 2011, recording his debut album, All I Was, during a period of three months when Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy was out on the road as a vocalist with Slash. The album, which was warmly received by critics, showcased a remarkably different sound from the guitarist’s previous work: heavy, fast thrash metal pronouncedly influenced by early Metallica, yet featuring a strongly melodic core with hints of the post-grunge sound that made his other bands so popular. 2015’s Cauterize, his sophomore solo outing, and 2016’s Dust were recorded at the same time, and featured bass work from Wolfgang Van Halen. 2018 saw the release of the band’s fourth album, the more progressive concept effort A Dying Machine, on Napalm Records, which had also recently signed Alter Bridge.

Monster Truck & Blacktop Mojo Perform at Warehouse Live Jan. 24
This month hard rock band, Monster Truck will be performing with Souther Rockers, Blacktop Mojo at Warehouse Live on Thursday, January 24th. There’s something comforting about a band name that delivers exactly what you are expecting to hear. The band realizes the potential for a sort of kitsch status being inadvertently placed upon them. However those cuMonster Truck rious to dig deeper will quickly realize their conviction for delivering authentic and original hard rock tunes. The band was formed in 2009 by Jon Harvey (Bass & Lead vocals), Jeremy Widerman (Guitar & Vocals), Brandon Bliss (Organ & Vocals) and Steve Kiely (Drums & Vocals) as somewhat of a side-project for their other more serious bands (The Reason, Saint Alvia). Quickly the original plan of getting wasted and playing sloppy rock got twisted into something new entirely. Everyone’s influences gelled in a cohesive and exciting new take on all of the classic rock that had come before them. Quickly show offers piled up as well as festival slots and the band realized that they had something that was undeniably fun and exciting on their hands. One of the most notable experiences came when the premiere of FUBAR 2 was rolling into TIFF on a flatbed truck driving through Toronto. The band was asked to come aboard to add their music to a mix of Terry, Deaner and dancing bikini babes. Needless to say a match made in rock n’ roll heaven was quickly formed. Other memorable 2010 shows included two different appearances at the Sound Academy. One supporting Steel Panther and a second show for EDGE 102’s Xmas bash with Die Mannequin. Playing loud-and-proud hard rock that mixes strutting ’70sstyle arena sounds with a dash of grunge-era sneer, Monster Truck were formed in Hamilton, Ontario in 2009 by members of two of the area’s most popular bands — guitarist Jeremy Widerman and drummer Steve Kiely had played with the group the Reason, and keyboard man Brandon Bliss worked with Saint Alvia. Eager to play the sort of no-nonsense hard rock they’d grown up on, Widerman, Bliss, and Kiely teamed up with singer and bassist Jon Harvey, and in 2010 Monster Truck cut a four-song EP, originally sold at the merch tables at their shows. The band has quickly become known for their live show and the growing confidence on stage is now more apparent than ever. The constant show regiment and recording process is sharpening the band’s delivery and there’s no doubt that anyone still interested in original and authentic rock music will be compelled to pay attention. As word about the group spread, they struck a deal with Canadian indie label Dine Alone Records, who in 2011 distributed their second EP, a six-song release called The Brown EP. Monster Truck’s 2011 EP The Brown EP found success for them in Canada. The single “Seven Seas Blues” charted in the top ten of the both the active rock airplay chart and the alternative rock airplay chart in the spring of 2012. “Righteous Smoke” and “Seven Seas Blues,” became staples on Canadian rock radio, and in 2012 Monster Truck gave a handful of their tracks a vinyl rerelease on the 12" LP The Don’t Fuck with the Truck Collection. The year 2012 also saw Monster Truck joining forces with the Sheepdogs for a sold-out tour of Canada, as well as opening several area dates for hard rock legends Deep Purple. By this time, Widerman, Bliss, and Kiely had quit their other bands to rock full-time with Monster Truck, and Dine Alone had struck a distribution deal with Universal. In 2013, the band dropped its first full-length album, Furiosity, which rose to number 13 on the Canadian album charts. As Monster Truck began growing into rock stardom at home, they won a Juno Award as the Breakthrough Group of 2013. After more touring in Canada, the United States, and Europe — including a stop at the U.K.’s annual hard rock event the Download Festival and a run of dates opening for Alice in Chains — Monster Truck entered the studio in 2015 to begin work on their second album. The band’s second studio album entitled Sittin’ Heavy was released on Mascot Records on February 19, 2016. Their track “Sweet Mountain River” was included in Ubisoft’s music game Rocksmith 2014, “Seven Seas Blues” in EA Sports’ NHL 13, and “Old Train” was used in an episode of Orphan Black, “Variable and Full of Perturbation”. The first single from their second studio album was released on October 19, 2015, a track called “Don’t Tell Me How to Live”. A song, “The Enforcer”, was also available only when pre-ordering the album. Their song “Righteous Smoke” is featured in EA Sports’ NHL 17. The song “The Enforcer” was also used as the goal song for the Toronto Maple Leafs after every goal scored with a “Go Leafs Go” chant added to the song. The band’s third studio album, True Rockers, was announced on June 1, 2018, upon the release of the lead single “Evolution”. The title track featuring Dee Snider was released as a
Blacktop Mojo promotional single the following week. The album was released on September 14, 2018. Seamlessly blending melody with adrenaline fueled, heavy rock and roll, Blacktop Mojo draws in everyone from old metal heads to people whose radio dials have never left top 40 stations. With soaring, gritty vocals and impeccably blended heavy guitar grooves set around a raucous southern stomp, Blacktop Mojo’s live shows are sure to leave fans’ screaming at the top of their lungs with metal horns in the air. Formed in the final weeks of 2012, Blacktop Mojo began
cutting their teeth in the numerous country venues that Texas has to offer, but the guys never quite felt like they belonged. With each song they wrote, the vocals got less twangy and the sound from the amps became more gravelly and distorted until the guys had found their own unique blend of heavy southern rock. Through touring, the band has played with many national acts such as Aaron Lewis, Candlebox, Drowning Pool, Puddle Of Mudd, Smile Empty Soul, Audiotopsy, and Whiskey Myers. Hard-driving Southern rock unit based out of Palestine, Texas, Blacktop Mojo’s fiery blend of post-grunge, classic rock, and metal falls somewhere between Soundgarden, Black Stone Cherry, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Founded in 2012 by frontman Matt James and drummer Nathan Gillis, the band eventually morphed into a five-piece with the additions of bass player Matt Curtis and guitarists Ryan Kiefer and Chuck Wepfer. They released their debut album, I Am, in 2014, followed by a heavy bout of touring that saw the group sharing the stage with a wide array of heavy hitters, including Bon Jovi, Sammy Hagar, Candlebox, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Black Stone Cherry, Shaman’s Harvest, Pop Evil, Puddle of Mudd, and Drowning Pool. In 2017, the band teamed up with Muscle Shoals producer Jimmy Johnson for their highly anticipated sophomore outing Burn the Ships. The album was released via the band’s label, Cuhmon Records, in March of that year to critical acclaim, and it’s first single, “Where The Wind Blows” reached #27 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, while the band was on its first U.S. tour that fall. At the beginning of 2018, the band has started work on its third full length release, as well as touring to support the second radio single from, “Burn The Ships”, a cover of Aerosmith’s “Dream On”.

Gift Remains The Same Toy Drive at The Concert Pub North Tonight we’re at The Annual Gift Remains The Same Toy Drive at The Concert Pub North. The Concert Pub was packed this evening with folks there to donate to kids around the Houston area, as well as celebrate the upcoming Christmas season. We saw a lot of great musicians perform at this event, as usual. It was non-stop music from the beginning to the end of this fantastic evening. The host band for this evening was Whole Lotta Led, the Led Zeppelin Tribute Band and needless to say, it was an evening filled with nothing but Led Zeppelin music performed by Whole Lotta Led and their friends, and believe me, they had a lot of friends taking to the stage at different times. It was a lot of fun and we had a great time listening to all the great music. We’ve got a couple of videos from this show to share with you right now, so you can sit back and start watching them on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net

The band was real good and did a great job on interpreting the music. They even performed some of their own original music. If you want to take a listen, you can even download some of their original music off their ReverbNation website. They rocked. When you get a chance, take a listen to these guys sometime. We think you’ll like them.

Blackberry Smoke continued from page 5 went straight back to working on the road. The album was released in February of 2015, debuting at number one on the Billboard country charts. Blackberry Smoke returned in the autumn of 2016 with Like an Arrow, their second album for Rounder. Throughout the following year, Blackberry Smoke hit the road in support of the album, while also returning to the studio to record their sixth full-length record. The resulting Find a Light — which saw them being joined by guests pedal steel player Robert Randolph, violinist and vocalist Amanda Shires, and folk outfit the Wood Brothers — was released in spring 2018. The set entered the Top Three of the U.S. country and indie charts, peaking just outside the Top 30 on the Billboard 200. Blackberry Smoke is Charlie Starr (vocals, guitar), Richard Turner (bass, vocals), Brit Turner (drums), Paul Jackson (guitar, vocals), and Brandon Still (keyboards). Since their debut in 2004, the band has independently released six full-length records and has toured relentlessly, building a strong and loyal community of fans. In addition to their work as musicians, Blackberry Smoke remains committed to charitable work and has raised nearly $200,000 benefiting children’s cancer research.

High On Fire Perform at White Oak Music Hall High On Fire are back on the road again and will be appearing in Houston at White Oak Music Hall on January 31st. They are touring in support of their most recent album, Electric Messiah. The Electric Messiah Tour, named after their latest studio album, Electric Messiah. The tour will kick off on January 10th in Atlanta and run through a February 1st date in New Orleans. They were forced to drop off their planned coheadlining North American tour with Municipal Waste last fall because of frontman Matt Pike having to undergo a partial toe amputation. HIGH ON FIRE features Matt Pike (guitar, vocals), Des Kensel (drums) and Jeff Matz (bass). High On Fire was also recently in the studio recording something for presumably Record Store Day in April 2019. Speculation is that the release will be an EP. This would be High On Fire’s first EP. Matt Pike has had this insatiable drive to get our some new material, so we’re looking forward to see what emerges from this recording session. If it’s anything like Electric Messiah, then we’re in for a real treat. Electric Messiah is High On Fire’s eighth studio album their fourth studio LP for eOne Music. It was released on October 5, 2018 through Entertainment One Music. It is the band’s third album to be produced by Kurt Ballou, and it serves as a tribute to Lemmy Kilmister of the band Motörhead. On August 6, 2018, Electric Messiah’s title track was released early for streaming. On October 3, 2018, the band released “Spewn from the Earth” as the album’s second single. “Electric Messiah” reunites HIGH ON FIRE with producer Kurt Ballou (CONVERGE, TORCHE, KVELERTAK) for the third time. “Kurt just has a knack for us, man,” Pike says. “We all work really well with him. Even if we have differences about how we want to record something, he works with us and understands
what we do. We’ve been sticking with him because we haven’t made a bad record with him yet.” Matt Pike told Blabbermouth.net that “This band keeps evolving. This is by far the best record I’ve ever made with the HIGH ON FIRE stamp. It just keeps getting better and better. We just try to outdo ourselves. I’m not saying the old work is progressively worse, it’s just that we get better every time instead of burning out, which is a common finality for a lot of bands. This album is fucking excellent. I just love everything on it; I’m not bummed about anything. It’s great when you think that about your record.” Matt also explained that the title of the new album was inspired by the legendary Lemmy Kilmeister from Motorhead. “I had a dream about Lemmy. When Lemmy was still alive, I always got compared to Lemmy, so I had this dream where he got pissed at me. He gave me a bunch of shit, basically, and was hazing me. Not that he didn’t approve of me, but like I was being hazed. The song is me telling the world that I could never fill Lemmy’s shoes because Lemmy’s Lemmy. I wanted to pay homage to him in a great way. And it turned out to be such a good title that the guys said we should call the album’Electric Messiah’.” High On Fire is one of the most punitive and muscular power trios since Motörhead. They helped bring heavy music into the 21st century via a sonic beatdown of uncompromising doom and stoner metal. The band was formed in 1998 by frontman Matt Pike, who also plays in another influential stoner/doom rock trio named Sleep. High on Fire released a handful of wellreceived, though largely under-the-radar albums before issuing the acclaimed Blessed Black Wings in 2005. Subsequent efforts like Snakes of the Divine (2010) and Electric Messiah (2018)
continued to blow the unholy horn of plenty, helping the band earn their place as one of the most widely respected heavy metal outfits on the planet. The Art of Self Defense Guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike, bass player George Rice, and drummer Des Kensel formed High on Fire in 1999. While Sleep had built their fame on impossibly slothful tunes and copious weed consumption, High on Fire’s first release, The Art of Self Defense, displayed a far more aggressive though still fantasy-themed style of heavy metal. Released to enthusiastic reviews, the album’s prospects suffered from label Man’s Ruin imminent bankruptcy, and it wasn’t until High on Fire landed on grindcore powerhouse Relapse Records for their second album, 2002’s devastating Surrounded by Thieves, that their abundant promise was rewarded. Extensive touring and an ever-increasing fan base followed, so that by the time they unleashed their third release, Blessed Black Wings, in early 2005 (introducing new bassist Joe Preston [ex-Thrones and Melvins]), High on Fire had officially spilled out of the underground into the mainstream. Preston would be replaced by Jeff Matz, who would play
on their 2007 release, Death Is This Communion, which soared to the top of numerous critics’ year-end lists. In 2010, High on Fire returned with their fifth studio album, Snakes for the Divine, released on Koch. It found similar favor with critics and fans, as did 2012’s De Vermis Mysteriis, which was produced by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou. The following year the stoner metal masters released a pair of live albums, Spitting Fire Live, Vol. 1 and Spitting Fire Live, Vol. 2, capturing two skull-crushing performances in New York City with a two-album set. When re-entering the studio, the trio re-teamed with producer Ballou and unleashed their seventh studio full-length, Luminiferous, in 2015; it featured the band’s sound at its most elemental and stripped down. 2018 proved to be a busy year for Pike, who reunited with Sleep for The Sciences, the group’s first collection of new material since 1999. Later that October, High on Fire released their eighth studio long player, Electric Messiah, which served as a tribute to Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, who passed away in 2015.

Adam Burchfield’s Birthday Bash at Fitzgerald’s
One of the opening acts for Adam Burchfield’s Birthday Bash was our old buddy, Benny Brasket. Benny and Adam have been friends for years. As expected, Benny did a great job, performing a mixture of origial and cover songs. Later on he even joined Adam on stage to perform. Benny has been performing around the Gulf Coast area since he was a kid and has really gained quite a following. His set here at ‘The Party’ was certainly a lot of fun. Joining Benny on bass guitar is another old friend of ours, Mr. Art Elder.

Tonight it was Adam Burchfield’s Birthday Party at Fitzgerald’s and there was a whole lot of folks who stopped by to perform and wish him a happy birthday. Among the folks performing there this night were The Luxurious Panthers, The Hipwaders Flying Circus, and Benny Brasket and The Octanes, Adam’s Band. Everybody performing there this night put on a fine show and the whole evening was a big success and very entertaining. The Octanes, Adam’s band, are one of Texas’ premier roots/rockabilly bands. The Octanes play original material, heavily rooted in hillbilly, while revving up the traditional sound with driving rhythms, and a big guitar tone. Adam is also endorsed by Gretsch Guitars. He uses Gretsch exclusively and only Marshall amps. Adam Burchfield has toured the U.S. and Europe with regional and International artists and has shared the stage with the likes of Billy Gibbons, Bill Kirchen, and Chris Duarte. As we said, the evening was a lot of fun and we hope to make it to his next Birthday Bash. Unfortunately, this will be the last time it will be held at Fitzgerald’s since the club has been sold and is being torn down. At any rate, for those of you who didn’t make it to the show and for those of you that want to relive this evening’s Octanes performance, we have 4 videos posted on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television for you to watch. Vicki largely performs to a preprogrammed music track accompanied by a drummer. Her show at Rockefellers this night was certainly well received. In fact, at times it was hard to see her as folks kept crowding the front of the stage for a better view. We really like the diversness of her show. Velveteen Echo Perform at Rudyard’s British Pub This night we made it out to Rudyard’s British Pub to see Velveteen Echo. Now here’s a band with a sound that is distinctly all its own. They have one of the mellowest sounds I’ve heard come out of Houston in a long time, perhaps somewhat comparable to The Cranberries or The Sundays. The band has been around for a while now, forming in 2016, so they have quite a few original songs under their belt. The project is spearheaded by guitarist/vocalist Lauren Warthen. Lauren has stated that a bit of their inspiration has come from pop duo Beach House and the psych rock band Melody’s Echo Chambers. That explains why their spacey sound utilizes such amounts of delay. At any rate their show at Rudyard’s this night was very impressive and entertaining. We weren’t the only ones there that thought so. From the reaction of the audience there, they either had a lot of fans already or at least made a lot of new ones. The band has a song out now on Bandcamp that you can check out. It’s called “Do You.” They indeed look very promising and it will be interesting to see how they progress down the road. In the meantime, if you’d like to try out the Velveteen Echo experience, just tune into HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http:// www.houstonmusicnews.net and you can see a couple of their performances from this nights show. TRY OUT OUR AWARD WINNING MARGARITAS AND GREAT MEXICAN FOOD! Good Enough For Good Times at The Last Concert Cafe We dropped by The Last Concert Cafe this evening to see this cool band from New Orleans. They’re called Good Enough For Good Times, and let me tell you, these guys rocked. We had a great time listening to them. While some of their music was pretty well structured, another part of it was pure jam, and it was real good. I don’t know really how to describe what they were performing adequately, but it was a lot of fun. The origins of the band are pretty interesting. They started up as a band due to the lack of musicians in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. A lot of the club owners were calling around asking musicians to put something together to fill their empty stages and they came together to play for them (or for themselves). The New Orleans’ folks who came home after the storm needed to hear some good music to get their minds off off the crazy SH*T that was going on around them. They had such a great time playing together that they just continued to do it, and we’re happy they did. It gave us a chance this night to see something different. Here’s another band you need to check out whenever they appear again in the Houston area. They ROCK! In the meantime, you’re just going to have to be satisfied by listening and watching the cool videos we filmed of them at The Last Concert. You can start watching them now on HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnew.net

This night we were treated to the sounds of White Room. ‘em we sent ya! continued on next page Tonight White Room was performing songs from Creedence Clearwater Revival (“Fortunate Son”), The Doors (“Break On Through”), Neil Young (“Southern Man”), Bad Company (“Rock Steady”), as well as Grand Funk Railroad, Robin Trower, and even a cool favorite by ZZ Top (“Francine”). They definitely put on a good show. Rock ‘N’ Rays is presenting live music every weekend, so be sure to visit this new club. I’m sure you’re going to find some great music there!!

New Releases Out Now! release filled with wonderful songs, such as Soundgarden’s “Loud Love,” “Black Hole Sun,” “Been Away Too Long,” and “Outshined.” Temple of the Dog is represented in the song “Hunger Strike.” Audioslave songs include on this release are “Like A Stone” and “Be Yourself.” Solo material on the album include a reworked version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” “Long Gone,” “Call Me A Dog,” “You Know My Name,” “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart,” “The Promise,” and a cover of Prince’s “Noting Compares 2 U,” which was recorded live on Sirius XM Radio and was unavailable till now. There are a few other gems here also. Also included in this release is the unreleased song, “When Bad Does Good.” This track was found in his personal archives and when good friend Josh
Chris Cornell: An Artists Legacy Also out from UMe is Chris Cornell: An Artists Legacy. The album was released by Cornell’s wife Vicky Cornell on behalf of The Chris Cornell Estate through UMe. The album will be released in several formats, the 17-song basic release, a 4-cd box set with 64 songs (11 of them unreleased), and a limited-edition Super Deluxe 4-cd, 1 DVD and 180gm 7-LP box set. The Super Deluxe version holds 88 tracks - 64 songs plus 24 videos, with 13 entries (11 audio + 2 video) previously unreleased overall. The Super Deluxe version also comes with a 66page hardcover photo book wrapped in linen with a red foil signature cover, three artist lithos, three photochromatic lithos inspired by Chris Cornell’s lyrical fascination about the sun, a turntable mat, a microfiber vinyl cleaning cloth, and a 36x48-inch wall poster. The box set’s ten unreleased live performances include Cornell’s duet with Yusuf/Cat Stevens on “Wild World” and another duet with his daughter, Toni Cornell, on Bob Marley’s indelible classic, “Redemption Song.” Temple of the Dog’s 25th anniversary reunion/first-ever-official tour in 2016 is highlighted with hometown performances of “Reach Down” and the Andy Wood/Mother Love Bone favorite “Stargazer,” Chris’ personal arrangement of “One” featuring the lyrics to Metallica’s song set to the music of U2’s song of same name, and a first ever album release of
Audioslave’s 2005 ground-breaking performance on Cuban soil of “Show Me How To Live.” Also in 2016, one of Chris’ personal career-topping moments was performing at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London where he covered The Beatles’ “A Day In The Life.” Three additional live selections from Sweden in 2006 include “Wide Awake,” “All Night Thing” and Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You” are from the very first show ever where Chris performed by himself with an acoustic guitar in front of an audience which became the creative spark for his future, highly successful Songbook tours. Two unreleased music videos spotlight a solo acoustic performance of “Scream” and the newly edited Soundgarden video “Live To Rise,” showcasing the band only without The Avengers movie footage included. We received our copy and I was a bit surprised that I’d forgotten how much of an impact that Chris really had on the music scene. His influence was the inspiration of many groups and his participation in so many different projects is astounding. From Soundgarden to Temple of the Dog to Audioslave, not to mention his solo work, Chris left his mark on the music business. This new career-spanning retrospective highlights quite a few aspects of his career and is a bittersweet farewell to his wonderful career. We received the 17-song basic
Brolin reminded Vicky that the song was a favorite of Chris’, she decided to share it with his fans. Our copy also came with a 12-page booklet with unreleased photos and liner notes written by Kim Thayll, Matt Cameron, Mike McCready, Tom Morello, and Brendan O’Brien. The album is definitely a great addition to any Chris Cornell fans collection, although it’s really unfortunate that it had to come by way of his death. There are a lot of great moments on this release. If you weren’t a Chris Cornell fan before the release of this album, I’m sure that once you listen to it, you’ll want to add more of his material to your collection. Chris was, without a doubt, a gifted writer and musician. The proof lies in this new release.
Lenny Kravitz: Let Love Rule Well folks, when it comes to the Lenny Kravitz reissues by Virgin / UMe, the final piece of the puzzle is now in. Out now is Lenny’s first album release, 1989’s Let Love Rule. While the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th albums were released on September 21st of last year, they held up on the release of Lenny’s first album till November 30th. Virgin / UMe took on a massive project remastering and reissuing the first 5 Lenny Kravitz releases. The results of this campaign were phenomenal. All of the albums were pressed as two LP vinyl releases on 180-gram vinyl. The remastering process was fantastic each album sounded fantastic and even better than its original release. As for Let Love Rule, this is the first time that the album was released on vinyl. That’s right, the original release was on CD only in the United States, so having this on vinyl is really cool. For those of you that are not that familiar with Let Love Rule, Lenny wrote and produced all the songs on his debut album. He also went one step further and played nearly all the albums on the album. His wife at the time, Lisa Benet wrote the lyrics to his song “Fear,” and also co-wrote the lyrics to “Rosemary” off the album. Let Love
Rule peaked at #61 on the Billboard 200 chart. Although the title song of Let Love Rule only reached the 23rd and #5 on the US Modern Rock chart spots on Mainstream Rock Tracks, it dominated the airwaves for quite a while and helped launch Lenny’s career into super stardom. The video for “Let Love Rule” was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist. “Mr. Cab Driver” was written by Lenny after an altercation with a local cab driver. Although it’s somewhat serious and displays a poignant social commentary of the time, Lenny wrote it with a sense of humor. Without a doubt, this is a great add on to any audiophile’s collection. It’s time to get your copy before this one disappears off the shelves.

Carranza Perform at The 19th Hole We dropped by The 19th Hole tonight to see Carranza. Guitarist Rob Carranza has been a fixture on the music scene for quite a while now. You may remember him from one of his previous bands, StarFX, which had a hit record some time ago before forming this band. Carranza has quite a few great songs, and it was definitely a pleasure seeing them this night at The 19th Hole. We certainly like the energy that the band put out with this performance. It definitely made the trip there worthwhile. We’ve got a couple of videos from their performance this evening to share with you, so if you tune in to HMNTV - Houston Music News Television at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net, you can start watching them now.

281-650-1953 Outlaw Lynn Performs at Loaded Barrels Hey look, it’s Oulaw Lynn at Loaded Barrels. Loaded Barrels, up on FM1960 is bringing in a lot of really fine entertainment. When we dropped by this night, Outlaw Lynn was on stage performing a great mix of originals and cover tunes. While we were there he performed quite a lot of our old favorites. He breathed new life into ZZ Top’s “Waitin’ For The Bus / Jesus Just Left Chicago,’ and the old standard, “Stormy Monday.” He also performed a few of his cool original pieces, like “Drink My Whiskey” and “Sturgis.” Yeah, Outlaw Lynn was in fine form tonight and he sounded great. While Hold On Hollywood has put on an impressive job with their career so far, their acoustic show is equally impressive. These guys held the audience in the palms of their hands the entire evening, performing both their originals and cover tunes. This was a great chance to see Nick and Ian up close and personal. We could tell that everyone there was having a great time. In fact, when the show was over, the folks there didn’t want them to get off the stage. They just couldn’t get enough of Nick and Ian. Great evening! Glad we made it.

Freddie Pate Performs at Katie’s In Bacliff Tonight we visited Freddie Pat at Katie’s in Bacliff. Freddie has had a pretty productive career. Among the bands he’s performed with, he was a member of Wayne Toups and Zydecajun. Over the years, he’s also opened up for some of the best entertainers around, including Ronnie Milsap, Willie Nelson, Johnny Rodriguez, Eddie Rabbit, Alabama, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, David Alan Coe, George Jones and many others. In 1985 Freddie and his band, Metropolis even wot the Marlbaro Country Music Talent Roundup and also were finalists in the Willie Nelson Music Showdown. Part of the prize from this event was being able to open for Ricky Skaggs, Ronnie Milsap, Hank Jr., and Merle Haggard at the Houston Summit. Hey, anybody out there remember the Houston Summit. At any rate, Freddie is one first class guitarist and really puts on a great show. His show at Katie’s was real impressive and we had a great time there. We’ll definitely be back to see Freddie.

continued from page 3 threaten the gritty, socially aware funk War specialized in. Later in 1977, the band switched labels, moving to MCA for Galaxy; though it sold respectably, and the disco-tinged title track was a hit on the R&B charts, it fizzled on the pop side, and proved to be the last time War would hit the Top 40. After completing the Youngblood soundtrack album in 1978, the original War lineup began to disintegrate. Dickerson left during the recording of 1979’s The Music Band (which featured new female vocalist Alice Tweed Smith), and not long after, Charles Miller was
murdered in a robbery attempt. After The Music Band was released, the remaining members attempted to refashion their image to fit the glitz of the era, and added some new personnel: bassist Luther Rabb, percussionist Ronnie Hammond, and saxophonist Pat Rizzo (ex-Sly & the Family Stone). The Music Band 2 flopped, and the group was thrown into disarray; Smith exited, and the follow-up took an uncharacteristic three years to prepare. Released in 1982, Outlaw was a moderate success; the title track was a Top 20 R&B hit, and “Cinco de Mayo” became a Latino holiday standard. Yet it didn’t restore War’s commercial standing. Rizzo left later in the year; Harold Brown followed in 1983, after Life Is So Strange flopped; and Rabb was replaced with Ricky Green in 1984. In the years that followed, War was essentially a touring outfit and nothing more. Papa Dee Allen collapsed and died on-stage of a brain aneurysm in 1988, leaving Jordan, Hammond, Oskar, and Scott as the core membership (Oskar would finally leave in 1992). Interest in War’s classic
material remained steady, however, thanks to frequent sampling of their grooves by hip-hop artists. 1992’s Rap Declares War paired the band with a variety of rappers, paving the way for the 1994 comeback attempt Peace Sign; for that record, Brown returned on drums, and Jordan (now on bass), Scott, and Hammond were joined by saxophonists Kerry Campbell and Charles Green, percussionist Sal Rodriguez, harmonica player Tetsuya “Tex” Nakamura, and Brown’s son, programmer Rae Valentine (plus guests Lee Oskar and José Feliciano). The album failed to chart, however, and the group returned to the touring circuit. Brown and Scott left the lineup in 1997. Greatest Hits LiveJordan continued to tour with a new version of the band in which he was the only original performing member. In 2008, War performed a one-off reunion date with Eric Burdon at London’s Royal Albert Hall as a precursor to the Rhino reissues of his albums with the band, and a pair of compilations. Later that year, Jordan’s War issued the audio/video live
package entitled Greatest Hits Live, covering material from the band’s best-known era, 19691975. In 2009 the group was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but failed to secure enough votes for induction. Evolutionary From 2009 on, War was a steady concert draw, either on the nostalgia group tour circuit or playing at festivals internationally. In 2014, the band issued Evolutionary on Universal, its first new album of studio material in a decade. The set was combined with the additional disc of its classic Greatest Hits album as an added incentive to consumers.
