Jimmy Eat World Performs at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Fresh off the heels of their whirlwind trek around Europe, Jimmy Eat World returns to North America for their summer run, which kicks off today. The tour will be making stops in a number of major cities including a sold-out show in Boston, two sold-out shows in Brooklyn, Charlotte, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. They will be performing this month, July 27th at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion along with Third Eye Blind. The band is on tour supporting their most recent album, “Integrity Blues.” Before Jimmy Eat World entered the studio to record their ninth full-length album, Integrity Blues [RCA], the members of the multiplatinum Mesa, AZ rock band did something they’ve never done in over two decades. “We took a little break,” smiles lead singer and guitarist Jim Adkins. Adkins released a series of 7” & embarked on his first worldwide solo tour, Lind released an EP and toured with his wife in The Wretched Desert, Linton took up boxing, and Burch opened up CaskWerks Distillery in Arizona. When the band reconvened in November 2015, they teamed up with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen [Paramore, M83] and began sifting through ideas. “I came to a realization,” admits Adkins. “In the break, writing was a little trickier. I wanted to change things up. So, instead of writing about a problem, I wanted to write about a solution. If you look at your life for what’s going wrong, it won’t be too hard to find things. If you start looking at what you have rather than what you’re missing out on, you come away from things with a much different perspective that’s a lot more grateful and positive. As an album, Integrity Blues is about trying to overcome that personal struggle instead of getting upset with what life could be that it isn’t.” They recorded in Los Angeles with Meldal-Johnsen, offering a different setting from their usual Arizona digs. “We became willing to throw away our default responses to everything and search for the best answers rather than relying on what was familiar or comfortable. When you’re younger and you make music, you do it for discovery. Being in this for a long time, it’s about throwing out all of your expectations and comforts and seeing what you can do without them.” With warm production and a powerful upbeat groove, Integrity Blues first single “Sure and Certain” pairs a buzzing guitar hum with an unshakable chant. “It’s about the idea of having blinders on for what you want to do and achieve,” the frontman explains. “Since you’re so laser focused on what you think you want, you’re missing out on everything around you. It can be a very limiting way to go about life.”

Meanwhile, the gorgeously minimal title track “Integrity Blues” tempers orchestral, cinematic overtones with a stark and striking vocal performance. After a successful 10th anniversary tour revisiting Futures, the musicians briefly went their separate ways at the end of 2014. “It was a song I wrote on the solo tour,” he recalls. “Sometimes, the idea of walking your path the best you can feels like lonely work. The only way out is action. Feelings of being in a dark place are actually growth opportunities. It’s emotional jiu-jitsu to shift your perspective into seeing it that way.” Elsewhere on the record, “Get Right” snaps into an energetic refrain, while “Through” serves up one of the band’s hookiest moments to date. “You Are Free” flaunts one of the group’s most hummable and heartfelt refrains, serving as another high watermark. “It Matters” illuminates the band’s diverse sonic palette and covers what Adkins describes as “a central theme about the idea that a sense of comfort comes from within and not just external validation.” “Pass The Baby” builds from a delicate heartbeat-style click into a deliberate and distorted explosion. Near seven-minute closer “Pol Roger” carves out an emotional and entrancing climax encased in a rapture of guitars and vocals, which according to Adkins, “Felt like the right way to sum everything up.” Surveying the journey thus far, Adkins maintains the same passion he did on day one, and it continues to fuel Jimmy Eat World. “I’ve wanted to play music since second grade, and here I am playing music. It’s something we’re immensely grateful for. That’s why we don’t take it lightly. We want to be in a constant state of progress. You have to move forward in a way that’s challenging and evolving.” “At the end of the day, you have to be proud of your own work,” he leaves off. “We are. If you breathe that in and believe it, you’ve won.” Recently, Jimmy Eat World released two new songs – “Love Never” and “half heart”. Recorded at the band’s Arizona Unit 2 studio, both tracks were co-produced by Jimmy Eat World and Grammy award-winning producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen. The new songs are the band’s first new material since 2016’s critically acclaimed ‘Integrity Blues’. The new tracks highlight the ever-dynamic Jimmy Eat World range that has made the likes of “The Middle,” “Sweetness,” “Work,” “Big Casino,” “Coffee and Cigarettes” and “Lucky Denver Mint” so infectious and enduring: “Love Never” a gloriously direct, adrenaline-charged rush, aimed at both head and heart alike, followed by “half heart” an emotionally charged counterpoint.

MUSIC NEWS The Rolling Stones will be bringing their “No Filter Tour” to Houston this month. They are scheduled to perform at NRG Stadium on July 27th. You had better get your tickets soon, because we expect this tour to sell out. Their U.S. installment of the “No Filter Tour” started out on June 21 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ilinois and is scheduled to wrap up on August 31st at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. The “No Filter Tour” is an extension of the “No Filter Tour” that kicked off on September 19th, 2017 in Hamburg, Germany. The tour was one of the most commercially successful concert tours of 2017 and 2018. The Setlist for their first show in Hamburg consisted of “Sympathy for the Devil,” “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It),” “Tumbling Dice,” “Out of Control,” “Just Your Fool,” “Ride ‘Em on Down” “Play with Fire,” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Dancing with Mr. D,” “Under My Thumb,” “Paint It Black,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Slipping Away,” “Happy, “ “Midnight Rambler,” “Miss You,” “Street Fighting Man,” “Start Me Up,” “Brown Sugar,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” with an encore of “Gimme Shelter” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” As you can see, this was one helluva show, but chances are this won’t be the setlist when they perform in Houston, but you can see this will be one great show! This will be The Rolling Stones first tour of stadiums in the United States since their “Zip Code Tour” in 2015, however they did return to the U.S. for “Desert Trip” in Indio, California in addition to two Las Vegas arena shows and two private gigs in 2016. Over the past two years they’ve only performed in Europe. They have seemed to have slowed down on their touring in the last few years and their recent tours have been confined to about 14 shows a year for the last two years. No doubt, their marathon tours have slimmed down lately. It’s really no surprise, since all the members of the Rolling Stones are in their 70’s now. In fact, drummer Charlie Watts will be celebrating his 78th birthday on the road here in the United States during this tour. He may be 78, but he still keeps the backbeat flowing for this high-energy band. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are both 75, and Ronnie Wood is 71. “It’s a thrill when we play stadiums in the States,” Mick Jagger said in a recent statement, “the energy is always amazing!” Keith Richards added, “I’ve always loved playing the states. It’s a great crowd.” It is reported that the band is currently working on an album of new material, but nothing new has been released or previewed yet. In the meantime, their record company has been busy releasing some compilations and re-releasing some classic material. In 2016, The Rolling Stones released their 23rd British and 25th American studio album, “Blue and Lonesome.” This was an album of their favorite covers songs, and their first studio album since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.” This album featured the songs “Just Your Fool” (Buddy Johnson), “Commit a Crime” (Howlin’ Wolf), “Blue and Lonesome” (Memphis Slim), All of Your Love” (Magic Sam), “I Gotta Go” (Little Walter), “Everybody Knows About My Good Thing” (Miles Grayson & Lermon Horton), “Ride ‘Em on Down” (Eddie Taylor), “Hate to See You Go” (Little Walter), “Hoo Doo Blues” (Otis Hicks & Jerry West), “Little Rain” (Ewart G.Abner Jr. & Jimmy Reed), “Just Like I Treat You” (Willie Dixon). and “I Can’t Quit You Baby” (Willie Dixon). Since the release of “Blue and Lonesome,” Abkco, which handles the band’s earlier releases, is celebrating the year 1968 with three releases. The first is a remastered version of “Beggars Banquet,” celebrated with a vinyl reissue. The second is a restored version of Jean-Luc Godard’s “Sympathy for the Devil” film. The third release is an expanded reissue of the “Rock and Roll Circus” film and album.

States?” “Yeah!,” because I didn’t want to get off, I thought we were just getting going. Kerr: The band has been on a pretty consistent role when it comes to performing with tours – how do the Rolling Stones instead of dialing it down, keep turning it up? Jagger: Well, we’ve been pretty regularly on the road – we’ve not been doing long, long, long stints we’ve been doing a lot of short ones. Last year we did a lot in UK and a little bit in Europe. We’re keeping our hand in and not getting too rusty, I hope. I haven’t been to quite a few of these places in a while. Kerr: What’s your personal training regimen like to get ready for those gigantic big stages? Jagger: Well, pretty stupidly, I made the stage even wider and a bit longer. Richards: Oh, thanks a lot, Mick. Jagger: Between these tours I have to keep a sort of plateau of fitness, so after I talk to you I’m probably going to go into the gym. I do a little bit of sprints and jogs, and I do dancing. Richards: If Mick can do it, I can do it. Kerr: This year, we’ve seen a lot of pretty prominent artists announce that they are embarking on farewell tours. And to cap things off, The Rolling Stones will be releasing a new compilation album, just in time for the kick-off of the tour. The new 3xCD, 4xLP retrospective will be released on April 19th, the day before the tour starts. This compilation will feature songs from the period of 1971 thru 2016, and include the songs “Start Me Up,” “Brown Sugar,” “Rocks Off,” “Miss You,” “Tumbling Dice,” ‘Just Your Fool,” “Wild Horses,” “Fool To Cry,” “Angie,” “Beast Of Burden,” “Hot Stuff,” “It’s Only Rock’n’Roll (But I Like It),” “Rock And A Hard Place,” “Doom And Gloom,” “Love Is Strong,” “Mixed Emotions,” “Don’t Stop,” “Ride ‘Em On Down,” “Bitch,” “Harlem Shuffle,” “Hate To See You Go,” “Rough Justice,” “Happy,” “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker),” “One More Shot,” “Respectable,” “You Got Me Rocking,” “Rain Fall Down,” “Dancing With Mr D,” “Undercover (Of The Night),” “Emotional Rescue,” “Waiting On A Friend,” “Saint Of Me,” “Out Of Control,” “Streets Of Love” and “Out Of Tears.” In addition to that, the album release will also feature a bonus disc with 10 live tracks containing songs from their most recent tour of stadium shows. Reportedly there will be a live version of “Bitch” featuring Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters, along with a rendition of “Wild Horses” featuring Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine. The ten song included are “Get Off My Cloud,” “Dancing With Mr D,” “Beast Of Burden” (with Ed Sheeran), “She’s A Rainbow,” “Wild Horses” (with Florence Welch), “Let’s Spend The Night Together,” “Dead Flowers” (with Brad Paisley), “Shine A Light,” “Under My Thumb, and the aforementioned “Bitch” (with Dave Grohl).

You have never said that:

Shortly after the tour was announced, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards did a brief but exclusive Q&A on iHeartRadio, hosted by New York Q104.3 host Jim Kerr. Here are some highlights from the iHeartRadio interview.

As you can see, The Rolling Stones have certainly been busy the past few years, and show no sign of slowing down or stopping. Without a doubt, their upcoming concert is going to be one of their best, and despite their ages, they always seem to put on a spectacular show. We’re certainly looking forward to their Houston stop at NRG Stadium this month.

Kerr: What can we expect when we see you next year? Richards: Well, first off, it’s great to be there playing back in America actually. It’s been a while, basically our stomping grounds from the early ’60s, so I always feel like I’m coming home. We finished off a few months ago in Europe and it just felt so good that when they said, “Do you want to do the

Richards: No, other people have always said this could be the last one. I never think of it that way, no: This is a “hello again” tour. Kerr: Would there be separate set list for United Kingdom than for the Unites States? Jagger: It will be slightly different, you know, if I do my research I can see that there are certain songs that might be popular in one place. Say slightly different songs in France might be more popular than, say, in Britain. I mean, not all of them, but there are slightly regional variations. I do look at it and go, “That’s a big song here, so we can do that instead of this one.” Kerr: Do you lobby for any specific songs in the setlist? Richards: Oh yes, I do, I do push a few in – “Under My Thumb” we started on again. I had an old one we did called “Cry To Me,” an old Solomon Burke song, which I broke into rehearsals. It didn’t make it yet on stage but I’m going to keep pushing that one. Kerr: What is the meaning behind calling the tour, “No Filter” Jagger: “It’s supposed to mean that it’s pretty straightahead, and no frills.”

Ambrosia Performs At Dosey Doe July 13 Dosey Doe in The Woodlands is happy to announce the return of Ambrosia to its stage this Friday, July 13th. The band is on tour celebrating it’s 49th year of bringing great music to stages worldwide. Ambrosia was heralded as the America’s answer to the Prog invasion of the 1970s that included bands like Yes, King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer and more. Throughout its fantastic career, Ambrosia has managed to receive 5 Grammy Nominations, 5 Hit Singles, sold out concerts, and the sales of thousands of albums worldwide. Although their first album, the self-titled debut album Ambrosia was released in 1975, the story goes back much further when 4 young musicians from the South Bay of Los Angeles decided to get together to create a distinct sound all their own. They wanted to take their combined interests in Blues, R&B, Classical, and turn it into a new Progressive sound of their own and they certainly did create something unique unto themselves. Those 4 young musicians were David Pack (guitar/vocals), Christopher North (keyboards/vocals), Joe Puerta (bass/vocals), and Burleigh Drummond (drums/vocals/percussion). After honing their skills and perfecting their songs for a few years, the released their first album in 1975. Recording for the first album took place at Mama Jo’s Recording Studio in North Hollywood, California in 1974. Freddie Piro, who had set up Mama Jo’s, produced the album. Freddie would go on to produce several of Ambrosia’s albums. He also engineered their first album. When it came down to mixing the album however, the band enlisted the help of the legendary Alan Parsons, who had previously worked with The Beatles and Pink Floyd, among many other notable groups. Consequently this also led to Ambrosia’s Grammy Nomination for Best Engineered and Mixed Album. The album also produced the Top 20 Hit single “Holdin’ On

To Yesterday,” along with the hit song, “Nice, Nice, Very Nice.” The following year in 1976, the band decided to take more of symphonic direction with their music. First off they enlisted Alan Parsons to produce the album and Andrew Powell to produce their orchestral arrangements. This yielded several fine moments on the album, such as “Somewhere I’ve Never Traveled,” “Can’t Let A Woman,” “Dance With Me George,” “Cowboy Star,” and the more power driven songs like “Runnin’ Away.” All in all, it was a great move in a new direction for the band. It also garnered the band another Grammy Nomination. Two years later the band returned with “Life Beyond L.A.” which featured a more commercial sound and even more great tunes like “Life Beyond L.A.”, “If Heaven Could Find Me,” and “How Much I Feel,” which gave the band another Top Ten hit, reaching #3 on The Billboard Charts. With every album, the band went through musical changes that continued to broaden their horizons. 1980 brought the album “One Eighty” which produced the hit song, “Biggest Part Of Me,” that reached #3 on The Billboard Top 100 and also crossed over to The Soul Charts. It also spawned the song “You’re The Only One,” which made it to #13 on The Billboard Hot 100. Along with that came three more Grammy Nominations. Finally in 1982 the band released their 5th and final studio album, “Road Island.” It produced some great songs, like “Feeling Alive Again” and “How Can You Love Me.” Shortly after this, the band parted ways with David Pack continuing on with a solo career and Joe Puerta joining up with Bruce Hornsby and The Range. Bruce Hornsby was also a member of Ambrosia for a short time. Finally in 1989 the band reunited and has been together ever since in different configurations, but they continued on performing the great

songs that their fans love. We caught up with drummer Burleigh Drummond that tell us, “I think right now we might have one if the best live versions of the band possible. With the combination of the players we have and the fact that we’ve had this group for ten years now, it’s become pretty solid. I can take no credit away from what’s happening on stage right now, it’s pretty exciting.” Ambrosia now is founding members Christopher North, Joe Puerta, Burleigh Drummond, along with the most recent members, Ken Stacey (acoustic guitar/vocals), Doug Jackson (guitars/vocals), and Burleigh’s wife, Mary Harris (keyboards/vocals). As we said before, Ambrosia is performing at Dosey Doe in the Woodlands. This is a return trip for Ambrosia and Burleigh tells us that he has fond memories of Dosey Doe and is looking forward to their return there. “We played there several times. The owner Steven is just a

great guy. I try to book into that place as much as I can just to visit. They’re just such nice people, and the food is amazing. It’s just a real nice intimate setting where you can play anything and the crowd is wonderful.” Burleigh also tells us that he likes the intimacy of their stage as well. It’s not huge, but it provides a place for the band to get together and rub elbows. “That’s where we play best… when we’re on top of each other. There’s nothing like being next to the person you’re playing with. Closeness is closeness.” With two sets of keyboards, two guitarists, bassist, and a drummer, it gets a little tight, but the band loves it that way. We asked us to give us an idea about what to expect for the show and he tells us “ We’ll do 90 minutes to 2 hours. We’ll probably get between 15 and 20 songs in. You’re definitely going to hear the hits, like “The Biggest Part Of

Miss May I Performs at Warehouse Live June 26 Miss May I will be performing this month at Warehouse Live on July 26th. Troy, Ohio’s Miss May I came together in 2006 while their members were still in high school. Consisting of guitarists Justin Aufdemkampe and B.J. This demo contained 6 tracks, including “Architect” and “Tides”, which would later on be featured in their first full-length album, Apologies Are for the Weak in 2009. James got his start at the age of 17 when he met and was mentored by Houston music legend Jerry Lightfoot and eventually started playing with him. James also began playing the regional blues circuit with Pearl Murray, beginning in 1993. James then formed the band Shadowcasters, who were mainstays on the blues scene from 1993 to 2011 and ultimately released one album, It Takes Time, in 2002.? James also played guitar for blues artist Steve Krase, filling the guitar spot for the past ten years playing hundreds of shows at clubs and festivals across the U.S. and in Europe as well as playing guitar on the group’s three album releases “Easy Living”, “Someday”, and “Buckle Up” (which reached #3 on the Billboard blues charts). Yes’ “The Royal Affair Tour” Takes Place At Smart Financial Centre This Month! One of the hottest summer tours will be taking place this month at Smart Financial Centre on Tuesday, July 16th. It is “The Royal Affair Tour” and it features four of Classic Rock’s most legendary artists. The tour features Prog-Rock giants Yes, along with Asia, John Lodge of The Moody Blues, and Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy. The 2019 summer concert calendar has just been lit up with the announcement of YES’ North American concert tour, “The Royal Affair Tour.” Headlined by prog rock pioneers and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees YES, who triumphed last year with their acclaimed and hugely successful #YES50: Celebrating 50 Years of YES tour, this must-see best-of-British-rock show will also feature Asia with the return of founding member Steve Howe in a special performance, John Lodge of The Moody Blues, and Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy with guest vocals by Arthur Brown. YES is Steve Howe (guitar, joined 1970), Alan White (drums since 1972), Geoff Downes (keyboards, first joined in 1980), Jon Davison (vocals since 2011) and Billy Sherwood (guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and the late Chris Squire’s choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015), with Jay Schellen on additional drums. Look for YES to perform songs from throughout their storied career, one of rock music’s most prized bodies of work, and their set will honor the memory of YES members Chris Squire and Peter Banks. Asia will play their signature songs and pay tribute to their late founding member John Wetton. A portion of their set will feature original guitarist Steve Howe in a special performance. Asia will also introduce its new line-up featuring guitarist/lead vocalist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal and bassist Billy Sherwood. John Lodge’s set will encompass his classic hits by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Moody Blues and pay tribute to the band’s recently departed member Ray Thomas. Carl Palmer will honor the memory of his fellow Emerson, Lake and Palmer members Keith Emerson and Greg Lake, with vocals by British vocalist Arthur Brown. As part of the evening’s British theme, there will be Alan White of YES’ tribute to John Lennon; White was the drummer on Lennon’s solo material including the recording of “Imagine.” Yes has just released their new documentary, “Yes 50: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”. The new documentary is a “teaser” to their forthcoming Rhino release, “Yes 50 Live” and was produced by Paul Gosling. The new documentary, which had a limited release over this past Christmas to fans as a holiday present has been updated with an additional 15-minutes of exclusive performance footage. It also contains interviews with current Yes members. Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, Billy Sherwood and Jon Davidson, along with current additional drummer Jay Schellan. It also features interviews with former Yes members, Tony Kaye and Trevor Horn. Also joining them on the interview is the legendary artist, Roger Dean, who was responsible for the majority of Yes’ artwork and their album covers. Roger will be in the lobby with an exhibition of his work and will be free to sign autographs, along with a copy of “The Royal Affair Tour” poster, which he created and designed. We’re told that advance copies of the new Rhino release, “Yes 50 Live” will be available at the band’s concert, prior to its official August 2 release date. “As a long-standing fan of the band, following Yes on the road this year and last on their momentous 50th tour was a dream come true,” says Gosling. “Thank you to Steve Howe, Alan White and the band, Roger Dean, Tony Kaye and Trevor Horn for their co-operation in making this film. We got a chance to talk to Geoff Downes, keyboardist for both Yes and Asia and he tells us, “This tour has been a really nice tour actually, because there’s a lot of different music, and quite a variety of stuff between the four bands performing.”

bums.

Besides the variety of music, Geoff also performs with both Yes and Asia, doing a bit of double-duty there. Geoff says that, “It’s quite interesting to be doing that. Yes is a different kind of band from Asia, so it makes for quite an interesting night for me to say the least.” When it comes to performing the keyboards performed by past keyboardists in Yes, Geoff tell us that, “It’s interesting to be looking at other keyboardists work, but just from the musical standpoint. I’m doing Tony Kaye, Rick Wakeman, so I’m sort of covering the bases of the history of Yes keyboard players in many ways and it’s quite demanding. It’s interesting from a musical standpoint to be looking at that stuff, channeling the other keyboard players. That’s because I’m having to model, as best I can, those musicians. I think in the case of Asia, I was a principal founding member and creator of a lot of the music with John Wetton. It seems a lot easier to do that because the music came from my fingers.” When it comes to describing the current tour, Geoff feels that “Well, I think this is more of a collaborative tour with John Lodge, Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy, and Asia. It’s more of a feast of progressive music in a way, and it spans some great eras in music, some fantastic songs. It’s all been well received so far. We’ve received great response from the people. Carl goes on first with his ELP Legacy. He’s doing stuff from “Tarkus” and some of the big pieces. And then John Lodge goes on and then Asia, and then Yes. It’s a lot of music you know, but it’s a real feast of music.” Far and away the longest-lasting and most successful of the ’70s progressive rock groups, Yes proved to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre despite almost constant personnel changes. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band. Their audience remained huge because they had always attracted younger listeners drawn to their mix of daunting virtuosity, cosmic (oftenmystical) lyrics, complex musical textures, and powerful yet delicate lead vocals. Fourteen of their albums have charted in the Top 200 in the

U.S. (including seven Top Tens), while another ten have landed in the U.K. Top 50. Music fans followed Yes from their progressive classics such as The Yes Album and Fragile to the big-beat new wave pop modernism of 90125 and Big Generator. Each new live recording — from 1986’s Keys to Ascension through 2017’s Progeny: Seven Shows from Seventy-Two — has sold out of its initial pressing quickly. Their singles charted consistently from the ’70s through the early ’90s. Seven of their albums have been certified platinum or multi-platinum, with another four being certified gold. The 21st century lineup remains a major concert draw across the globe and records periodically. Also accompanying the band on tour this year will be Roger Dean, whose artwork has appeared on Yes and Asia albums throughout the years. Also on “The Royal Affair Tour” will be Asia, which will be joined by original members Geoff Downes and Carl Palmer, along with a guest appearance by Steve Howe. When they appeared in the early ’80s, Asia seemed to be a holdover from the ’70s, when supergroups and self-important progressive rockers reigned supreme. Featuring members of such seminal art rock bands as King Crimson (John Wetton), Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Carl Palmer), and Yes (Steve Howe), as well as Geoff Downes from the Buggles, Asia did feature stretches of indulgent instrumentals on their records. However, they also could be surprisingly poppy, and that is what brought them to the top of the charts with their debut album, Asia, and its hit single, “Heat of the Moment.” Alpha, their second album, also had a couple of hits (“Don’t Cry” and “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes”). Next on the bill is John Lodge, whose bass guitar and vocals have graced nearly every Moody Blues album. With the formation of the classic lineup in 1966, featuring Ray Thomas, Mike Pinder, Graeme Edge, John Lodge and Justin Hayward, the band worked with producer Tony Clarke to record the landmark concept album Days Of Future Passed. The record mixed symphonic orchestrations with a psychedelic rock band singing soaring melodies, spawned the hit single “Nights In White Satin,” and is considered one of the very first progressive rock al-

This new sound influenced an entire generation of musicians, including Yes and Genesis. Throughout the adventurous explorations of the next nine albums, the Moody Blues produced numerous hit songs that became staples of FM radio. In 2013, a Rolling Stone reader poll listed the Moody Blues as one of the top 10 bands that need to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So, whether you are a fan of progressive rock Moodies from the 1960s, the band’s synthesizer-driven rock sounds of the 1980s, or have recently seen them playing for multiple generations of rock and roll fans, one thing is clear – the Moody Blues have created more than 50 years of exhilarating and significant music. Just some of The Moody Blues albums are “In Search Of The Lost Chord,” “On The Threshold Of A Dream,” “To Our Children’s Children’s Children,” “A Question Of Balance,” “Octave,” “The Present,” and “Sur La Mer.” We also got a chance to talk to John Lodge from The Moody Blues about his set on this tour and what to expect. John tells us that he just loves touring as a solo act. It really gives him a chance to stretch his wings and not only perform songs he’s written with The Moodies, but also his original songs as well. “It really started when I wanted to record some new music. When vinyl records started becoming popular again a few years ago, I thought that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to make a vinyl album, get back into the studio and record a 180gm vinyl album,” explains John. “And of course, as usual when you’ve written a song and recorded it, what you want to do then is go on the road. So I did a small British tour, which I really enjoyed, with my 10,000 Light Year Band and then I was invited for the “Cruise To The Edge” Tour with Yes. Through that, they asked me if I would like to go with them on a tour of the USA. I said ‘yes, that’s a great idea.’ So we’re touring right across America and the tour is called ‘The Royal Affair.’ There’s Yes, Asia, Carl Palmer, and myself. We’re having a fantastic time. I’m really enjoying it. I’ve got what I consider a fantastic band. It’s reinvigorated me. And what’s added to that is I just signed with BMG for a world deal and released a single called “Street Café.” We’re also putting a pretty good album out called “Beyond” on August 23rd. It’s really deep cuts from my past that I’ve gone back in the studio and re-recorded.” Although John has recorded a new album, on this tour with The Moody Blues his time is a bit constrained on stage and he’ll mainly stick with the classics. He explains, “On this tour with Yes it really is, because of the time limitations, Moody Blues songs and John Lodge songs. There will be Moody Blues songs that people really expect me to perform… Things like “Singer In A Rock and Roll Band,” “Isn’t Life Strange,” “Ride My See-Saw,” “Footstep In A Slide Zone.” The set seems to be timed right and it’s really exciting to be honest.” In addition to the Moody Blues standards, also expect to hear a couple of his new songs as well. As you can tell, he’s going to have a wonderful set planned for everyone. Last, but certainly not least, is Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy. Carl is a founding member of the band Emerson Lake & Palmer, who established the band along with Keith Emerson and Greg Lake. Emerson, Lake & Palmer were progressive rock’s first supergroup. Greeted by the rock press and the public as something akin to conquering heroes, they succeeded in broadening the audience for progressive rock from hundreds of thousands into tens of millions of listeners, creating a major radio phenomenon as well. Their flamboyance on record and in the studio echoed the best work of the heavy metal bands of the era, proving that classical rockers could compete for that arena-scale audience. Over and above their own commercial success, the trio also paved the way for the success of such bands as Yes, who would become their chief rivals for much of the 1970s.

Houston based band, The Glass, performed their ‘Tribute To Soda Stereo” to a packed house at Rockefeller this past month. The crowd there was ecstatic. They seemed to know the words to every song and virtually everybody in the room sang along with the band. It was quite impressive. Soda Stereo is a Argentine rock band created in Buenos Aires in 1982 by the power trio made up of Gustavo Cerati (lead vocals, guitars), Héctor “Zeta” Bosio (bass), and Charly Alberti (drums). They went on to become one of South America’s most influential bands and superstars. The show this night was really good, and even though I was not really familiar with Soda Stereo, the music that The Glass performed was fantastic. I’m going to have to find some of Soda Stereo’s music and try it out. Slightly Stoopid Performs at White Oak Music Hall

Slightly Stoopid will be performing this month at White Oak Music Hall on July 28th. The Ocean Beach, California-based band formed by multi-instrumentalists Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty has matured into a versatile musical ensemble consisting of drummer Ryan “Rymo” Moran; percussionist Oguer “OG” Ocon; saxophonist Daniel “Dela” Delacruz; keyboardist Paul Wolstencroft; trumpet and trombone player Andy Geib, and an arsenal of guests that frequent the stage, most notably Karl Denson (Rolling Stones/Greyboy Allstars), Don Carlos, Chali 2na (Jurassic 5) and Rashawn Ross (Dave Matthews Band). Employing a self-described amalgam of “folk, rock, reggae and blues with hip-hop, funk, metal and punk,” Southern California’s Slightly Stoopid originated in the 1990s as a classic SoCal skatepunk crew before transitioning into cannabis-fueled purveyors of carefree, jam-centric good times with the release of 2003’s Everything You Need. Signed to Sublime mastermind Brad Nowell’s Skunk imprint while co-founders Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald were still in high school, the band eventually grew into a sprawling seven-piece that became known for its musical eclecticism and energetic and inclusive live performances. Since debuting in 1996, the group has issued a string of studio and live albums, with highlights arriving via 2005’s Closer to the Sun, 2007’s Chronchitis, and 2015’s Meanwhile...Back at the Lab. Slightly $toopid After inking a deal with Skunk in 1995, the band released a pair of LPs, Slightly $toopid in 1996 and Longest Barrel Ride in 1998. While the sound was skatepunk influenced by thrash elements and copious amounts of weed, Doughty and McDonald’s playing and singing had matured considerably by 2001 and Live & Direct: Acoustic Roots. The duo later added drummer Ryan Moran, saxophonist Daniel “Dela” Delacruz, and percussionist/vocalist Oguer Ocon to the line-up. By 2003 and Everything You Need, they were rocking a California-centric sound of loopy sampledelic pop, hip-hop influence, and sunny marijuana affirmations, with the occasional return to raucous skatepunk. In 2005, Slightly Stoopid released their most accomplished album to date, Closer to the Sun. The record mixed dub and reggae influences with light hip-hop and an easy groove — on tracks like “Ain’t Got a Lot of Money,” Doughty and McDonald suggested Jack Johnson fronting Fun Lovin’ Criminals. Their eclectic mix of sounds found the band on tours over the years with a variety of acts including the Marley Brothers, blink-182, G. Love & Special Sauce, Pennywise, and N.E.R.D. Considering Slightly Stoopid’s

longtime and adamantly D.I.Y. work ethic, Closer to the Sun impressively debuted in the Billboard Top 200 and sold nearly 25,000 copies in its first two months of release. The EP Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid appeared next, which contained Sun outtakes and other classic studio recordings. Playing nearly 200 shows a year for their diverse fan base affectionately termed Ese Locos or Stoopidheads, the group released a live album (Winter Tour ’05-’06) and DVD (Live in San Diego) in June 2006. The releases reflected the band’s tendency to jam for nearly two hours at their gigs, focusing on improvisation and crowd interaction. Despite their intense touring schedule, the band managed to make it into the studio, and in 2007 they released Chronchitis. The following year they treated fans to an updated version of their Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid release. The updated version featured all of the tracks from the 2005 EP, as well as outtakes from Chronchitis, cover songs, and unreleased crowd favorites. The band returned in 2012 with Top of the World, an album that continued their evolution toward smoother sounds and featured guests like G. Love, Barrington Levy, and Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na. The album Meanwhile... Back at the Lab followed in 2015 and was supported by a U.S. tour, then a lengthy international jaunt that saw the group playing shows in South America, Australia, England, and the Netherlands. In 2017, they undertook their annual “Sounds of Summer” tour of headline shows at outdoor amphitheaters and issued the single “One Bright Day,” which featured a guest appearance by American-Trinidadian singer/ songwriter and producer Angela Hunte. The following year saw the group issue their ninth full-length studio effort, Everyday Life, Everyday People, which featured guest spots from G. Love, Alborosie, Don Carlos, and Yellowman, among others. The band’s prolific 2017 schedule has included international shows in South America, Australia, England and the Netherlands, in addition to the 30+ national headlining dates that encompassed the band’s annual outdoor amphitheater tour, titled “Sounds Of Summer 2017,” ranking in Pollstar’s Top 100 Global Tours of Summer 2017. In December 2017, the genre-mashing outfit will host its 4th annual Closer To The Sun festival, a four day gathering of music in an intimate “all inclusive” setting for

their hardest core fans and favorite hand selected talent, taking place on the sand in Puerto Morelos, Mexico, amidst the spiritual Mayan Peninsula. The Closer To The Sun festival also represents Slightly Stoopid’s philanthropic side, as the event helps to raise funds for the non-profit charity, Positive Legacy. Slightly Stoopid has generously supported the pediatric cancer organizations Grind For Life and the Sheckler Foundation by teaming with the legendary skateboarder Danny Way for a limited edition custom skate deck/CD fundraising project. Also, the 2017 animated video for their recent single “One Bright Day” (featuring singer Angela Hunte), included an “on-line auction” component utilizing limited edition hand-painted canvases used in the video. The effort helped to provide light to 4 villages associated with the Global Brightlight Foundation, a charitable organization for providing third world villages in need of solar power. Recently Slightly Stoopid churned out their second live webcast performance with music legend Bob Weir (Grateful Dead) at his TRI Studios complex, a session that yielded live versions of Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower” and Prince’s “Purple Rain” (the latter recorded at the respectful request of Weir on the morning that witnessed the legend’s unanticipated passing). An eclectic band when it comes to musical styles as well as collaborations, Slightly Stoopid, now in their second decade of making music, continues to manufacture an energizing and multifaceted sound that has been described as “a spiritual bath of positive party energy.”

Double Vision HTX Performs at The BFE Rock Club We dropped by The BFE Rock Club this night for Frankie and Loretta’s Birthday Bash to help them celebrate. It was a helluva party and the club was packed inside and out. It’s amazing how many people they can fit into the back patio area, and it was packed as well. On stage this night was a couple of great bands and we’ve got videos of a couple of them. Performing right now is another fine band we saw at The BFE Rock Club. It’s the Foreigner Tribute, Double Vision HTX. On lead vocals is Randy Folk, who is another one of Houston’s finest vocalists. We’ve been following his career for many years now and he is truly amazing. Also in the band is Eric Halpern (guitars), Adam Rawlings (keyboards, vocals), Bill Thompson (drums, vocals), and Joey Edgerly (bass, vocals). This is truly a great band filmed with some really fine musicians. These guys were at the top of their game tonight, and I didn’t think the audience was going to let them leave the stage tonight, they were so enamored by their performances. And Yes, we’ve got a couple of videos of these guys available for you to check out right now also. Here they are performing Foreigner’s “Blue Morning, Blue Day” and “Urgent”. Check it out right now. Just Google Double Vision HTX Performs at The BFE Rock Club. They are also available at HMNTV Houston Music News Television aka houstonmusicnewstelevision1 at http://www.houstonmusicnews.net. Del Castillo Performs at White Oak Music Hall

Latin rock band Del Castillo will be appearing this month at White Oak Music Hall on July 20th. Del Castillo is a cross-cultural power in music. Their original sound blends, rock, Latin, blues, and world music. “Whether Del Castillo works in Spanish or English, it rocks righteously. The Spanish guitars’ flamenco vibe gives a dramatic flair, abetted by Alex Ruiz’s passionate vocals. They pull together Latin music’s romance and rock’s grit.” says Billboard” “… tumbling brilliance on nylon-string guitars…These eruptions of technique and taste conjure images of Eddie Van Halen fronting early Santana (with an assist from the Gipsy Kings).” says Rolling Stone. Between the release of their first CD, Brothers of the Castle back in 2001, to their 2006 release, Brotherhood, Del Castillo has received an astonishing 18 awards including SXSW/Austin Music “Album of the Year” Awards for Vida (2002) and Brotherhood (2006), “Band of the Year (2003)”, ASCAP’S “Best Independent Group of the Year (2005)”, and Austin Music Pundits “Best Live Act (2004)”. Film Director Robert Rodriguez attended a Del Castillo concert in 2002 and a great friendship developed between the two. Rodriguez then enlisted the group to contribute music to the soundtracks of his movies, such as “Spy Kids 3D”, “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”,“Sin City”, and “GRINDHOUSE”, and perform with him at the premieres. Rodriguez was so impressed with Del Castillo that he wanted to record with them, so together, they formed CHINGON and recorded an amazing electric rendition of the Mexican classic song, “Malaguena Salerosa”. Quentin Tarantino loved it so much that he re-did the ending sequence of “Kill Bill Vol. II” to fit the song into his movie. By 2004, Del Castillo was touring nationwide across the country playing with such di-

verse acts as Styx, Los Lonely Boys, Ozomatli, Don Henley, Los Lobos, and Willie Nelson and continued tour non-stop through 2006. They have performed at three of Willie Nelson’s 4th Of July Picnics, and at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, and they have made numerous national and local TV appearances. Willie Nelson enjoyed Del Castillo so much that he re-recorded his song “I Never Cared For You” with the group (which is included on Del Castillo’s Brotherhood CD) and calls it “his favorite version”. Nelson has become a good friend of the band as well and the two look forward to touring together again soon. During 2008, the band began playing major festivals all over the country and even Canada and widening its audience at a much more rapid rate. At California’s famous Strawberry Music Festival, they were deemed the highlight of the festival and broke the merchandise sales record. Immediately after their incendiary debut performance at the Vancouver Folk Festival in Canada, they were selected to play the headlining stage for 2009. Rick and Mark del Castillo were selected in December 2008, by Gibson Global, to be two of only about SIX guitarists in the world to launch their new state-of the-art Dark Fire Gibson Les Paul guitar line. The band, now reunited with longtime charismatic frontman Alex Ruiz providing lead vocals, is recording new music with the brothers’ mesmerizing guitar driven songs, intertwined with hypnotic rhythms from Mike Zeoli and Jason Murdy, and pulsating bass lines from Albert Besteiro. Through their great artistic friendship and partnership with director Robert Rodriguez, Rick, Mark, Alex & Mike are featured actors performing on the TV show “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” on the El Rey Network! “I want to bring the most exciting and

authentic content possible,” said Rodriguez when announcing the TV series. “Chingon and Del Castillo have been part of my experience providing this kind of entertainment to audiences since the beginning.” Del Castillo’s instrumental track, “Las Seis Cuerdas de Tony Montuno” was hand picked to be featured on episode 2 of ABC’s new crime/ drama Killer Women. Mark & Rick are featured on Ray Benson’s just released solo CD, A Little Piece. Del Castillo has received accolades and awards for their music and performances over the years. At the Ellnora Guitar Festival in Illinois, Matt Blackett from Guitar Player Maga-

zine said: “Watching brothers Rick and Mark del Castillo take the stage and throw down dazzling nylon-string runs, in unison and in harmony, made me a big fan… infectious Latin rhythms with mind-boggling solos.” From the Montreaux Music Festival in Switzerland, and the Ellnora Guitar Festival in Illinois, to the California World Music Festival, Del Castillo thrives on performing live. Songwriting and recording projects are a priority during breaks in their tour schedule and a new release is upcoming!
