Texas VFW Post Assists in WWII Veteran Trip to New Orleans

Texas VFW assists with WWII Veterans Trip to New Orleans to visit WWII Museum

PAST STATE COMMANDER and member of Post 12075, Inge Conley, and husband Earl participated in a trip accompanying eight WWII Veterans from Houston to New Orleans to visit the WWII museum. The trip was scheduled from August 27-29, 2021, but Hurricane Ida forced them to cut the trip a day short. They departed on Friday morning with a motorcycle and local police escort from Houston to the Louisiana border where State Motorcycle Troopers from Louisiana continued the escort to the Higgins Hotel in New Orleans.

The trip included a visit to the casino and dinner which was sponsored by Department of Texas VFW (MAP). Saturday morning included a visit to the WWII Museum which was a wonderful adventure with many tears and a lot of reflection. They departed New Orleans around 1:00 p.m. Saturday ahead of the approaching hurricane. After an 18-hour trip they arrived back in Houston around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. Total participants were 32 people including from the following organizations: Department of Texas VFW, American Legion Post 654, American Legion Post 490 (Auxiliary), and District 2S-2 Lions Club International. The WWII Veterans and organizers had a wonderful trip and the expression of gratitude was shared by all.

Mr. Guthrie, a veteran who was stranded

in Houston on his way to Arizona, called Post 12075 for help. They were able to give him financial assistance from their Post Relief Fund so he could get home to Arizona. Mr. Guthrie, posing here with Inge Conley, is a Korean War and Vietnam War Veteran and is 85 years old.
