Note from the Editor

What A Year It Was! Summer may not have officially started yet in the U.S. but its sizzling heat is all over this new issue of TFC All Access. We kick off with an insider look into the hottest new programs on TFC today: the fantaserye Dyesebel, the talk show Abunda & Aquino Tonight, and the teleserye The Legal Wife. Dyesebel, starring the sizzling triumvirate of Philippine showbiz sweetheart Anne Curtis and top matinee idols Sam Milby and Gerald Anderson, is consistently topping the national ratings, debuting in March as the most watched show in the country. While boasting of a sterling cast of popular TV and film actors and actresses, the main factor behind the show’s winning ratings is the total commitment and charisma of Anne Curtis in playing the title role. Catch the sexy yet sweet actress in this issue with a “tail” untold as our cover story. Meanwhile, three of the brightest and best-looking young male stars of Philippine entertainment grace our issue with scorching images and interesting features on their passions outside showbiz. Enchong Dee, Daniel Padilla and Enrique Gil – young leading men who are making millions of hearts swoon – share what things drive them when they are not in front of the cameras. COMING OUT OF HER SHELL It’s Showtime mainstay Coleen Garcia is carving her own niche in showbiz

A

dmittedly, this Spanish-Filipina beauty never once thought that she would someday be ushered into the dynamic, colorful world of showbiz, considering she was a very shy person who never fancied dancing, singing or acting in front of an audience. But now, with exposure gained from the popular noontime show It’s Showtime, and unexpectedly finding herself the object of people’s curiosity after cohost Billy Crawford’s confession that he is courting her, Coleen Garcia finds it is her life that has been turned on its head. Ironically, Coleen never thought she would become an artista. She was very boyish. “I was into sports and serious about my studies. Towards the end of my high school years, sobrang naging studious ako. I was into Math and English. I really wasn’t inclined to music and arts.” But after graduating from high school, she decided to give it a try and appeared in a commercial for Lewis and Pearl cologne in 2010. After that, Star Magic contacted her and she started doing go-sees. And as fate would have it, ABS-CBN Head for TV Production Entertainment Direk Laurenti Dyogi discovered her as she was hanging outside the Big Brother House. “He went up to me and asked me if I wanted to be in a show and then he included me in the cast of Good Vibes,” Coleen narrates. “That’s how my career started.” Coming from a family of politicians—the Ortegas of La Union (Coleen’s full name is Coleen Ortega Garcia)— her parents initially weren’t keen on the idea of their daughter entering showbiz, especially since they had other plans for her. She says: “They wanted me to get into law or politics. But I realized that it just wasn’t for me. Eventually, my parents accepted it and they are now very happy for me because I support myself. Also, it comes in a different form but it’s still success, so kahit papaano, they’re proud of me pa rin.” Right now, Coleen is busy with her hosting gig on It’s Showtime—a job that she really enjoys. “I can’t think of a better job na you just go there, and you’re with people whom you have come to know as your family,” she shares. “At the same time, it’s hard to find a job where all

you have to do is be yourself.” But of course, she is also hopeful that she will be given more movie and TV roles roles this year to further hone her skills as an actress. “I want to be able to tackle roles that are very far from my personality,” Coleen says. “I want to do more than just the typical roles you see nowadays, ’yung parang kinakawawa. I want something deeper. That’s why I’m trying to venture into different projects.” Coleen also plans to go back to school to take up a degree in Communication Arts or any writing course, saying, “I was the Editor-in-Chief of our school paper when I was in high school. What I’m doing now is very artistic so I want something challenging. I just feel like that’s the hole I need to fill in my life. If ever I want to discontinue working in front of the camera, I can still continue working behind the camera because by then I would have built enough experience. Or maybe I can also juggle both.”

HOT TALK

Coleen’s definition of sexiness HOW DO YOU DEFINE THE WORD “SEXY”? “Sexy is being comfortable and confident with everything you are and everything you have despite any flaws you think you might have.” ARE YOU CONSCIOUS ABOUT THE WAY YOU EAT? “I eat everything I want to as long as I compensate by going to the gym.” HOW DO YOU KEEP FIT? “I go to the gym. I love weights because I don’t go to the gym to lose—I go to the gym to gain. I’m payat and I don’t like that. I want to have big legs. Bilang Spanish, malaki ’yung balakang ko. My legs are thin so pinapalaki ko ’yung legs ko para proportionate. It’s not always about losing weight. It’s important to know what your body needs because it could affect your health. It’s important to see a nutritionist for you to know what you really need.”

HER BIG MOVE

After a long wait, Meg Imperial is finally gearing up to be a household name, one challenging—and sexy—role at a time

U

p-and-coming actress Meg Imperial admits that before joining showbiz, the idea of wearing a skimpy bikini in front of the camera did not sit well with her. So when she had to do a sexy cover shoot for a men’s magazine to promote her critically-acclaimed Joel Lamangan movie Menor De Edad, she insisted on a trial shoot to help build her confidence. “First time ko kasing mag-bikini nu’n,” the Galema star shares. “During the trial shoot, nakiusap ako na lumabas lahat ng mga tao. Ang natira lang ay ’yung photographer, me, and my mom. But then, natuwa naman ako sa outcome. Kasi parang dine-define lang ’yung other side of you, na pwede ka rin pala maging hot. Tapos na-realize ko na it depends sa artista kung magiging bastusin siya or not. It depends on how you handle yourself.” From her first showbiz gig in 2010 via the TV5 drama-horror Midnight DJ, Meg has become more relevant in the industry, as ref lected by the growing number of projects under her belt. She shares the limelight with Andi Eigenmann in the TV series Galema: Anak ni Zuma, has become a regular guest performer on ASAP, and recently starred in the movie adaptation of Bob Ong’s bestselling book ABNKKBSNPLAKO?! (where she plays the role of Portia, who became a lesbian after her best friend, portrayed by Jericho Rosales, didn’t return her affection when they were younger; the movie is still showing in theaters). Meg was a child when she discovered she had a knack for performing. “Maarte akong bata,” she says with a chuckle. “Sinusuot ko ’yung dresses ng mommy ko tapos nag-mo-model-model-an ako. Sumasali ako sa mga kung anu-anong events and pageants. So na-inspire si mommy. Siya ’yung nag-push sa akin.

12

At age nine, she started modeling for print ads, TV commercials and ramp shows. She then started freelancing as a bit player—or, in showbiz-speak, ekstra—until she decided to change her name from Mary Grace to Meg (“Para mas matandaan ng tao,” she says). She also attended acting workshops until she was signed by TV5, where she starred in Midnight DJ with Oyo Sotto, Glamorosa with Lorna Tolentino and Enchanted Garden with Alex Gonzaga, her last show in the Kapatid network, before she found a new home in ABS-CBN. As for the decision of transferring networks, Meg has absolutely no regrets and counts herself lucky for the opportunities given to her since she made the big move.

HOT TALK

Meg tells us what sexy means to her

HOW DO YOU DEFINE THE WORD “SEXY”? “Sexy is confidence—the way you talk, the way you carry yourself.” ARE YOU CONSCIOUS ABOUT THE WAY YOU EAT? “Before, hindi ako conscious pero lately, oo, kasi kailangan. Since maputi ako sa screen, nagmumukha akong malapad. So I don’t eat rice and I eat less meat and more of fish and vegetables. No juice, no soft drinks. And of course, bawas din sa sodium to avoid water retention.” HOW DO YOU KEEP FIT? “I go to Gold’s Gym. Or kaya sa bahay lang, ’yung Zumba. Nagboboxing din ako, usually in Elorde.”

ONSCREEN ATTRACTIONS

The first quarter of Kapamilya television viewing gets off ta a powerful start. Here’s a roundup of what is on and what else to expect this 2014

P

By Redilyn Dimaandal and Mc Robin Dejumo

DYESEBEL Genre: Drama/Fantasy Cast: Anne Curtis, Gerald Anderson, Sam Milby, Andi Eigenmann Directors: Don M. Cuaresma and Francis Pasion Anne Curtis will breathe new life into the wellloved character of Dyesebel. This Mars Ravelo classic graphic komiks novel is set to make a big splash this 2014. Mixing fantasy with drama, Dyesebel is a story that begins when a mermaid-turnedhuman named Lucia falls in love with a human named Tino. They get married and have a beautiful baby, but instead of a human baby she delivers a mermaid, who is named Dyesebel. Years later, a jealous mermaid named Dyangga makes Dyesebel’s life miserable. Adding a romantic twist to the story is the love triangle between her, a kind, handsome young man named Fredo, and his former girlfriend named Betty. The story has been adapted into five films from 1953 to 1996. Among the Filipinas who took on the coveted role on the big screen are Edna 14

TFC MARCH-APRIL 2014.indd 14

2

Luna (1953), Vilma Santos (1973), Alma Moreno (1978), Alice Dixson (1990) and Charlene Gonzalez (1996). Marian Rivera also played the character in a 2008 TV series. In a report filed by abs-cbnnews.com, it was said that the network won the rights to Dyesebel and 12 other titles or characters created by Ravelo in a deal described by the late novelist’s son, Rex, as “the best option” for the comics novelist. When ABS-CBN finally announced plans to remake the well-loved fantaserye character, there was much speculation on who would be chosen to play the role. Among those whose names came up were Kim Chiu, Jessy Mendiola and even KC Concepcion. However, after all was said and done, it was Anne who bagged the role. It is actually Anne’s second time to wear a fish tail on television, having played the role of a mermaid in Dyosa in 2008. It would be a challenge for her to prove that she could repeat her earlier success. But Anne seemed unfazed, if a bit emotional, at a press conference to announce the news to the entertainment media. “It’s another dream come true. Sobra lang akong speechless kasi ang laking project nito. Sinasabi ko noon pa na dream role ko ang Dyesebel. So ito na, 2014, it’s a great way to start the year,” she said. Another thing that is making Dyesebel highlyanticipated is that it is the reunion of Anne and Sam Milby, who first lit up TV screens in Maging Sino Ka Man. THE LEGAL WIFE

Genre: Melodrama and Romance Cast: Angel Locsin, Jericho Rosales, Maja Salvador, JC De Vera Directors: Rory B. Quintos and Dado C. Lumibao Taking a leap into Primetime Bida is another piece of prime dramatic material: The Legal Wife, which features Angel Locsin in the title I S S U E

role. Joining her in the cast are Jericho Rosales, Maja Salvador, and the newest Kapamilya leading man, JC De Vera. At the center of this high-octane drama is the love that evolves between Monica Santiago-de Villa, played by Locsin, and Adrian de Villa, played by Rosales. Into their neatly-ordered lives, fate throws Nicole Esquivel, played by Maja Salvador, and Max Gonzales, played by De Vera. This early, so many of the currently-airing show’s dramatic confrontation scenes are being anticipated by the audience, and some of them have already found their way to social media where they have found a new life as Internet memes—and yet there is no denying the power of the story, even with its familiar theme of marital infidelity.

IKAW LAMANG Genre: Period-action drama, romance Cast: Coco Martin, Kim Chiu, Julia Montes and Jake Cuenca Directors: Malu Sevilla and Avel Sunpongco How about a period drama for primetime? The fresh and first-time tandem of Drama King Coco Martin and Teleserye Princess Kim Chiu is definitely something to watch for. Ikaw Lamang is an epic drama blended with elements of romance and action. Coco plays a sakada (sugarcane worker), while Kim plays a young heiress. The two fall in love, and that is where the conflict begins. Its trailer introduces the show and story as “isang kuwentong isinilang sa panahon ng karangyaan at panahon ng nakakaalipin na kahirapan”. It is an interesting look into the lives of sakadas, or sugarcane workers. The other members of the cast include Coco’s previous leading lady Julia Montes, who were last seen onscreen together in the phenomenal Walang

Story courtesy of STARSTUDIO MAGAZINE

rimetime Bida has never been this exciting. From the most-awaited comeback swim of the famous fish tail, the battle between a legal wife and a mistress, head to head combat between the country’s biggest losers, timeless dramas and a show of forever, ABSCBN is ready to conquer the primetime viewing experience of Filipinos in 2014. As the network celebrates 60 Years of Television, viewers can expect a new batch of shows spanning different genres from drama to romance, comedy, reality, fantasy and romantic-comedy and testing new onscreen combinations.

Hanggan. Included also is Jake Cuenca who worked with Kim and Coco in Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo. Dreamscape’s newest epic series is a period teleserye set in a 1960s hacienda. Some of the pivotal scenes were reportedly shot in Bacolod. Also playing crucial roles are Ronaldo Valdez, Cherie Gil, Angel Aquino, John Estrada, Meryll Soriano and Tirso Cruz III. This early, there is much buzz about the show because of its scope, cast and production design.

Matteo Guidicelli and Robi Domingo who also serves as the social media correspondent of the show. Jim Saret returns as one of the show’s professional trainers and is now joined by his wife Toni. With a bigger team, naturally, bigger challenges await the official top 10 contestants: married Couple: Carl and Kayen, brothers and business partners Christian and Ralph, siblings Bryan and Ikya, showbiz royalties Cathy (daughter of former Sen. Ramon Revilla Sr’s son Marlon Bautista) and Pat (daughter of William Martinez and Yayo Aguila), couples Valerie and Biggie and Andrew and Francis, cousins Carol and Lovely, sisters Tin and Dianne, Tristan and Jepoy, and officemates Bien and Mai. This season follows the doubles format of the fifth season of the American version. MIRABELLA

I DO Genre: Reality Show Host: Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo with co-host Jason Gainza After the highly-entertaining Bet on Your Baby, actressTV Host Judy Ann Santos will host ABS-CBN’s newest reality show I Do. The show is an original concept that will prepare couples for married life. The couples will reside in a reality village, be put in situations and face challenges that will test their relationship. Aside from being the host, Judy Ann will also sit as member of the council as a homemaker, along with the other love and family experts who will guide the participating couples. Similar to the highly-successful Pinoy Big Brother franchise where multiple camera set-ups recorded the housemates’ every move, the couples will find themselves being watched 24/7. The winning couple will get their dream wedding, a honeymoon package, a new car, a house and lot, and P1 million. I Do will air in the third quarter of 2014. Comedian and former Pinoy Big Brother housemate Jason Gainza will co-host the show.

Genre: Drama, Fantasy Cast: Julia Barretto, Enrique Gil, Sam Concepcion Director: Jerome Pobocan, Erick Salud and Jojo Saguin Young actress Julia Barretto, fast-rising leading man Enrique Gil and Sam Concepcion will topbill ABSCBN’s newest primetime drama series. It was in March last year that Julia was introduced as one of the new faces of Star Magic Batch 2013 and now, she is all set to be launched via her first lead role in this muchanticipated drama series. Her first project was actually supposed to be Cofradia, but instead, this project fell into her lap. There were also several changes along the way, but now that everything is firmly in place, it will be interesting to see how the 16-year-old actress plays a main character is someone who is cursed and physically ugly, but transforms into a great beauty. Also included in the cast are Pokwang, Mylene Dizon, John “Sweet” Lapus and Gloria Diaz. SANA BUKAS PA ANG KAHAPON Genre: Drama Cast: Bea Alonzo, Paulo Avelino, Iza Calzado Directors: Jerome Chavez Pobocan and Trina M. Dayrit Bea Alonzo took a major leap forward in her journey as a star when she played a character older than her real age. Now, the luminous star who impressed with

her performances in films like The Mistress and She’s The One will again face another acting challenge as she plays three different characters in the television drama Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon under Dreamscape Entertainment TV. The show marks her return to television after an absence of more than a year. The challenge of playing three different roles is exhausting, Bea admits. “First time ko to portray tatlong characters kaya nakakapagod talaga,” she says. The actress adds that her characters are not triplets, nor do they know each other, but their destinies are all entwined. Joining the cast are Paulo Avelino and Iza Calzado with veteran actors Susan Roces, Anita Linda, Dina Bonnevie, Tonton Gutierrez, Albert Martinez and Ronaldo Valdez. “Kakaiba ito sa lahat nang nagawa ko,” Roces said. “New experience ito na istorya ng labanan ng dalawang angkan sa negosyo.” With a heartfelt story and powerhouse cast, Kapamilya viewers will once again witness an acting ensemble of the country’s finest actors in a soap opera that might well become a classic.

AQUINO AND ABUNDA TONIGHT Genre: Talk Show Hosts: Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda

On Monday, February 10, they came back to TV. The Queen of All Media Kris Aquino and the King of Talk, Boy Abunda, who have done several entertainment and talk shows together, were relaunched as the late-night tandem of Aquino and Abunda Tonight, a 15-minute talk show featuring today’s hot topics and personalities. Boy’s “Ikaw Na” segment on the late-night newscast Bandila, which had been running for three years, had to give way so he could take on this latest assignment. The duo’s first guest was Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, and even before the telecast of the pilot episode was over, the show was already a trending topic on Twitter. After it wrapped up, netizens’ reactions were mostly focused on how brief the show was. “Bitin!” cried most of their viewers who found the show’s format too short for hosts like Boy and Kris, who are both glib and articulate. Will there be a change? A longer format, perhaps? We will just have to wait and see. With the hosts who are known for conducting fearless interviews, primetime viewing just became more exciting. Aquino and Abunda Tonight airs Monday to Friday nightly after The Legal Wife.

the goodness he does for the community. This also reinforces the idea that the virtue is doable.

Explain the importance of telling the truth

Raise your own ‘Honesto’ with these tips inspired by the hit TV show By RHIA DIOMAMPO-GRANA

H

onesto headwriter Joel Mercado knew the show was making a positive impact in their viewers when he heard a mother talking to her two kids at a mall. “Gumaya kayo kay Honesto. Magsabi kayo ng totoo. Sino ang may gawa nito?” “Our intention is to have a feel-good show that teaches good values to both young and old. It tackles the basic nature of kindness, and the virtue of honesty,” he says. Here are some ways to encourage honesty, as imparted by the show:

says Joel. Your actions and responses to situations will show your child how honest you are.

Don’t lie to your child

“To a child, it’s either black or white, good or bad; there are no gray areas. The concept of ‘white lies’ will make him think that he can bend the rules,” says Joel. It’s better to admit that some things are hard to talk about than to try to cover them up. “In one episode, Honesto asked, ‘Nay, naghihirap na ba tayo?’ Lourdes didn’t want to burden her child so her answer was, ‘Anak, hindi tayo mayaman. Oo, kulang tayo sa pera, pero hindi lang naman pera ang kayamanan.”

Set a positive example

Role-modeling is the best way to teach honesty to a young child. “In the show, there have been several opportunities for Honesto’s grandfather and mom to get rich through fraudulent ways, but they chose to live a simple yet honest life. Honesto does what he sees in his family,” 16

Teach about honest people

It can be a friend, a family member, a church leader, or a personality he can emulate. In the soap, Lourdes tells her son Honesto anecdotes about his lolo’s honest service as a barangay captain and •

Teach the consequences of dishonesty Shoplifters and other dishonest people are examples of how dishonesty began in childhood and can become a pattern that continues into adulthood. Teach the child that it might benefit them right here and now, but in the long run, honesty is the best policy.

Keep your cool

According to Jane Nelsen, author of the Positive Discipline book series, “Preschoolers lie usually because they are afraid of punishment or they’re afraid of disappointing us.” Yelling or punishing your child may do more harm than good. “We’ve taken the child totally out of any learning mode, when he’s feeling defensive or afraid,” says Nelsen. In the show, Lourdes maintains a calm demeanor whenever she talks to Honesto. “She’d tell Honesto, ‘Galit ako sa ginawa mo, pero mahal pa rin kita,” says Joel. Use age-appropriate language Let your preschoolers know that telling the truth feels good and is the “big-boy” or “biggirl” thing to do. Make it clear that lying can cause others to mistrust their word and lead to sadness. Preschoolers should understand that their actions have an effect on others.

Praise truth-telling

Encouragement is a great way to show children the importance of being honest. In the show, Lourdes always acknowledges Honesto’s good behavior by giving him a simple kiss or hug, or sometimes by preparing his favorite food. Let your child know that honesty is worthy of a compliment.

‘SCOUT’S HONOR!’

The teleserye conveys this in one episode, where Honesto caught his classmates cheating in school. At first, he got scared to tell the truth, but he realized that his classmates will continue their wrongdoing if he won’t speak up. “Kung hindi itatama ang isang pagkakamali, kalalakihan iyon ng bata. As parents, you have to do something to show that the behavior is unacceptable,” says Joel.

A ‘TAIL’ UNTOLD Mars Ravelo’s legendary komiks novel about a mermaid is re-invented for a whole new generation of viewers. Here, on these pages, is the story of how a komiks classic was given a new, updated appeal By Niña Sherizze de Sagun

Anne last played a mermaid in 2008’s Dyosa. On the day the announcement was made that she would return to TV to play another mermaid, it was revealed in a story aired on the late-night newscast Bandila that the choice of the It’s Showtime host was based on market and audience research. Many netizens were excited to see Anne play Mars Ravelo’s iconic mermaid. “Sa lahat ng taong naniwala na kaya kong i-portray si Dyesebel, maraming-maraming salamat for keeping that kind of faith in me,” said Anne in response.

I

n December last year, a teaser for ABS-CBN’s latest offering began airing. It was for the late Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel. Ravelo, a graphic novelist, started out as a cartoonist, a writer and later became editorin-chief of two publishing houses. He established his own publishing company and became known for creating memorable komiks characters like Darna, Captain Barbell, Lastikman and Dyesebel, the story of a lovelorn mermaid that he wrote in the 1950s. This year, Dyesebel is returning to television. Almost as soon as the announcement was out, people began speculating on who would play the female lead until early this year when the name of the newest Dyesebel was revealed. Dreamscape, an entertainment unit of ABS-CBN TV Entertainment Production, finally ended the suspense on January 9, with a surprise announcement that launched the exciting start of the biggest fantaserye yet.

The big reveal

Up until that point, no hint had leaked to the press. Anne Curtis, who would later be revealed as the choice to play the iconic mermaid, only learned that she landed the highly-coveted role when she returned from a vacation in Canada. At the press conference announcing the project, she was teary-eyed. Anne—who, at 29, is the oldest actress to take on the character—told reporters that she was very excited, and that it was a dream come true to be given the role. “This is major, and I think every woman’s dream—

since you’re a little girl—is to become a mermaid.” Even Anne’s leading men, Sam Milby (who will be playing the role of a merman named Liro) and Gerald Anderson, who will star as Dyesebel’s land-bound love interest, Fredo, were informed about their roles only days before. Likewise, directors Don Cuaresma (Rubi, 100 Days to Heaven and Sabel) and Francis Pasion (Princess and I, My Binondo Girl and Sabel) found out it was going to be Anne only a day prior to the announcement. “Hindi siya nileleak sa amin. Ganoon ’yung confidentiality kung sino ang gaganap na Dyesebel,” Direk Don tells StarStudio. There were several factors that worked in her favor, but Anne’s looks may also have been one of the things that helped her land the role. Direk Don says, “First of all, may mold yung pagiging Dyesebel. Starting with Charlene Gonzalez, Alma Moreno, Alice Dixson, Vilma Santos—alam mo na medyo mestiza. Parang Caucasianlooking, ethereal yung beauty. More so, Anne has an interesting quality pointed out by Direk Francis. She is “old enough to be sensual and young enough to be innocent”. Her co-stars are in the same boat with regard to Anne’s portrayal. Sam, Anne’s former boyfriend, attests that “nu’ng narinig ko ’yung Dyesebel na lalabas, I wouldn’t think of anybody else at all kundi si Anne talaga.” Co-star Neil TFC ALL ACCESS V O L U M E

The Dyesebel legend revolves around the mermaid, but integral to the story are her two love interests: one a merman, the other, a human. The merman will be played by Anne’s real-life ex, Sam Milby (right), while the human will be played by Gerald Anderson (left), who, during the press conference for the show, expressed his nervousness. “Kailangan daw kasi dito, may abs!” laughed Gerald. Both actors, as well as Anne, are not only brushing up on their swimming technique, but are making sure that their bodies are prepared for some major exposure.

Anne’s fondness for her newfound character seemed to reflect in the initial scenes shot in Palawan. Despite spending long hours in the water, it appeared that she enjoyed every minute spent on the Dyesebel set. “Wala siyang problema,” says Direk Don. “She’s a trouper. I think basically, ang kailangan sa isang artista is ’yung matiyaga siya, at matiyaga ito (Anne). Walang attitude. Game siya. Kasi ’yung mag-swimming ka na, mahirap na ’yan, what more with the tail, it’s heavier so parang it’s three times ’yung difficulty nu’ng ginagawa. Wala siyang reklamo.” The tail that Anne and the other characters wear is made of 100 percent industrial-grade silicone. Dyesebel’s designer Noel Flores—who has been working as a visual concept designer for TV and film and whose first work was for the ABS-CBN fantaserye Kokey in 1996—says this was an improvement over the old latex rubber mermaid tails that were in use in other mermaid-seryes. Rubber as material is more vulnerable to chipping and other forms of damage due to long hours spent soaking in salt water. Sam, in a separate interview with StarStudio, talked about what the experience of wearing the tails was like, although from a male character’s point of view: “’Yung outfit, makapal na silicone. Tapos yung hawak mo, kahoy. Parang ’yung buong katawan mo gustong lumutang, kaya extra effort na manatili doon sa tubig, doon sa baba. Kasi medyo maluwag ’yung sa feet area, at saka mabigat ’yung buntot, ’yung dulo. Kaya ’pag gumagalaw na ’yung paa namin sa loob ng buntot, hindi masyadong sumusunod ’yung buntot. Kaya mahirap.” Fortunately for Anne, she has had some practice, Dyesebel not being her first time to play a mermaid. In 2008, she starred in Dyosa where her goddess character—who drew her powers from the sea, sky and land—underwent a series of transformations from mermaid (sea), to harpy (sky) to a centauride (land). Despite this, Anne still insisted on taking part in swimming training with the Philippine Mermaid 18

Swimming Academy to prepare for Dyesebel. In her Instagram account, she posted a photo with the following caption: “Day 2 of training with my coach Karla Fukui of the Philippine Mermaid Swimming Academy! I’ll tell you one thing, it certainly isn’t an easy thing to do BUT it’s loads of fun!!!” This new Dyesebel hints at good story-telling and is a visually appealing piece compared to past versions. Direk Francis says: “It’s Anne Curtis, it’s a different portrayal for her and ABS-CBN is known for good story telling. That’s the strength of ABS-CBN shows, the narrative. I think it would be an engaging experience for the audience, I think they would be entertained and I think they could also relate to the characters because even if they are mermaid characters, they have human emotions.” It will be the first time—after mermaid teleseryes like Marina, Mutya and Aryana—that ABS-CBN’s Bida Kapamilya will showcase its own version of the original iconic show from which all underwater and mermaid stories have sprung. Not only that, there is a concerted effort to make this Dyesebel appealing to the global audience, says Flores. “It’s about time talaga na we stick with the idea to globalize Dyesebel. With this show we will try our best to make it globalized na ’pag pinanood sa ibang bansa, [people will say] ‘Okay, that’s a mermaid story’ and ‘visually, it’s the mermaid kingdom’ kahit di nila naiintindihan yung salita.” With state-of-the art graphics plus a powerhouse cast and promising storyline, it’s more of an introduction of our folklore to the world and as depicted by Direk Don, “Pangglobal pero mare-retain pa rin ’yung culture ng Pilipino.”

Behind the ‘Tail’

Dyesebel, as created by Ravelo, is essentially a love story. A mermaid-turned-human falls in love with a human and bears him a child; the child, however, is not human but a mermaid and is named Dyesebel. Her existence throws her family’s life into chaos; they attempt to keep it a secret from their neighbors, but are found out. The child is shunned

Backstage at the ABS-CBN trade launch where the network’s new shows were announced, Anne seized the opportunity for a photo-op with Ai-Ai de las Alas and Dawn Zulueta, who will be playing her two mothers: one her ‘mermaid mom’ (Ai-Ai) and the other, her mother on land (Dawn). Ai-Ai, in particular, was very excited. “First time kong gaganap na sirena!”

3/25/14 6:07 PM

Anne, wearing her mermaid tail, is eased into the water during a taping. Some of the scenes were shot in Palawan, where Anne, Sam (right photo), Gerald and the crew stayed for a few days. Concept designer Noel Flores says that the mermaid tails being used in the show are made of 100 percent industrial grade silicone, which makes them less vulnerable to the damaging effects of being submerged for long periods of time in saltwater.

by the community, and her mother makes the decision to send her back to the safety of the seas. There, Dyesebel begins a new life that will take her from the depths of the ocean back to land, where she will be plunged into new adventures and learn about love. Since its debut in the pages of Pilipino Komiks in 1952, Dyesebel has been created and recreated several times for television and film. On this, its return to the small screen (the last time it was on TV was in 2008, with Marian Rivera in the lead role), viewers might ask what is special about this new adaptation. This Dyesebel will definitely have something new to offer, says Flores, who describes it as “world-building”. Unlike other versions, this modern-day Dyesebel had him creating an underwater world in its most detailed form, structurally and otherwise. Explains Flores: “Naglagay kami ng culture. Kasi unlike in other mermaid shows,‘ pag ipinapakita mo ’yung throne room ng isang merfolk or royalty, ang makikita mo lang, coral formations. You have a cave or caves na walang water, at nakaupo lang ’yung mga mermaids. This time, ang throne room or ’yung kingdom mismo you will see culture, meaning you will see structures, hindi lang siya nakaasa sa organic na growth… Meron ka ring makikitang caste system: we have royalty, we have servants, teachers, engineers, soldiers, you have outcasts and laws. It’s a whole system.” Two sets will be utilized: the natural location and the “big-ature,” a term Flores coined for his miniature set to make it easier to shoot composite scenes and seamlessly

layer them with live action, via new technologies in broadcast TV. Cables and special rigs will also be used to complete the execution of underwater scenes. Digital Dodge, a popular special effects company, is also part of the project, making every episode a virtually cinematic experience. In every mermaid story, one of the many challenges is how to make the tail look genuine. Apart from the prosthetics group that crafted it, Flores says that the lighting, camera angling and computer graphics will help enhance the tail, making it an authentic-looking one. For Dyesebel, proper distinctions for the merman and mermaids were made. “The tails are different. If you see the new trailer, yung tail ng lalake, iba sa tail ng babae. (The tails for the mermen are more clamshaped, or shaped to resemble a manatee tail, while those of the mermaids are more V-shaped, says Flores). In designing the concept for the show—and to help it appeal to today’s younger, digital-heavy audience—Flores and his team “game-ified” the images. “It’s as if they have the feel of looking at a video game or an RPG (role-playing game), where the characters evolve,” he explains. Dyesebel is only one of three Mars Ravelo works acquired by ABS-CBN; the other two are Darna and Captain Barbell. His family has been hands-on with the production and will help keep the original concept as it was conceived by the komiks genius 60 years ago. As everyone is excited to witness Anne Curtis making a splash as she puts on the tail of the komiks favorite, Gerald reveals his own anticipation for the project, “I’m very excited. It’s gonna be a great show para sa summer, para sa mga bata, for everybody so, ngayon pa lang sobrang excited na ang lahat.” Following the outline and reliving the magic of the original Dyesebel story, the latest remake holds a promise of the best there is, making Filipinos love Dyesebel even more. WHERE HE ROAMS

Enchong’s trip to Taiwan in 2012 was both a treat for his family and a break from work for himself. The 25-year-old actor had a lot of fun posing in front of Taiwan’s tourist attractions. He even went planking on a Taiwan street!

O

ne of Enchong’s trademarks is his love for travelling. In his social media sites like Instagram and Facebook, Enchong always makes it a point to share his trips with fans in and out of the Philippines. As a competitive swimmer, he was already able to visit different countries early in his life. Now that he’s an actor, he has added more countries to his growing list of trips. When asked to name the places he’s been to, he pauses and tries to recall the names. “I’ve been to London and Yorkshire (England), Milan and Palermo (both in Italy), Heidelberg and Hamburg (Germany), Oslo (Norway), Sydney (Australia), Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Tokyo (Japan), Beijing (China), Mongolia, India and Paris (France),” he enumerates excitedly. “I’m lucky to have travelled at a very young age with my team mates from The Filipino Channel (TFC) and ABSCBN,” he says. He has plenty of travel anecdotes that he stores in his memory. On some of those trips, Enchong was joined by his family. To show his appreciation for his family’s support, Enchong has treated them to memorable trips abroad. “I think three or four years ago, first time ko na i-treat sina Mama, Papa at buong family out of the country. First time namin magsama-sama lahat kasi hindi naman namin ito nagagawa before. Dahil medyo nakaluwag nang konti, nag-Hong Kong kami tapos nag-Disneyland,” he shares. “Sobrang memorable ng trip na yon. After that, naging yearly event na siya para sa akin kasi talagang gustunggusto kong nakikita kaming lahat na magkakasama,” he smiles. Among the places they have visited together as a family are Australia, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan. He knows that being given the privilege to travel, whether 20

with family or on his own, is something to be thankful for. “One time, I was in front of Times Square in New York and sabi ko lang sa sarili ko, ‘Enchong, you should be thankful and you are so lucky because at an early age, you’re here in New York. You can get lost and knowing that lumapit ka lang sa kahit kaninong Filipino at tutulungan ka nila. I’m in a very good place. Sinabi ko lang, ‘Thank You God. Thank You for putting me where I am right now,” shares Enchong. Among all the places he’s been to, Norway and Japan are favorites. “Twice lang akong nakapunta sa Japan but there are so many things to do. I find the Japanese people really very nice, very respectful and courteous. Of course, Japanese cuisine is to die for,” he says. Norway is inching closer to his immediate interest right now since his brother AJ, the eldest among the Dee siblings, is moving to Oslo. “I’ve been there once but I think I’ll be going back and forth since kuya is migrating to Oslo this year. You know how it is, di ba? You feel a certain connection with the place the moment you have a relative who moves there. I am excited to see the northern lights in Norway!” says Enchong, his face lighting up with anticipation. But while Enchong may have caught the traveling bug, he still believes that, at the end of the road, there is still no place like home.

China was one of the recent places they went to. This shot was taken while they were in transit at the Beijing airport, one of the busiest airports in the world. “Super happy dahil first time na nakasama ‘yung buong family,” Enchong said of this photo, which includes (from left) his brother AJ and parents Sonny and Thess.

Enchong visited China and took the opportunity to see the Great Wall of China, named a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1987. The wall that remains today was mostly built during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). When Enchong visited, the weather was chilly. “Super lamig!” he says of that trip. Enchong has fond memories of that trip, which he took with his parents Sonny and Thess (below). It’s always a memorable trip when he gets to travel with family.

Being an athlete himself and a veteran of many international swimming competitions, Enchong made sure to check out the Beijing Olympic Stadium. Beijing hosted the Summer Olympic Games in August 2008. It was the third time that the Summer Olympic Games were held in Asia, after Tokyo, Japan, in 1964 and Seoul, South Korea, in 1988. Being able to see the Olympic stadium was an experience that Enchong considers “a dream come true”.

Japan was also a fun country for them to visit as a family. They did everything, from sampling the food to seeing the sights, but it was the food that Enchong remembers the most, apart from the people they met along the way. “Japanese cuisine is to die for, and I find the Japanese people very nice, respectful and courteous,” says Enchong.

The actor has visited Japan twice and has always been fascinated by the beauty of Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan at more than 12,000 feet. In this Instagram photo, Enchong thanked the mountain for showing its majesty to his family during that trip, which nearly TFC ALL ACCESS Vturned O L into U Ma disaster E 2 when • I they S S got U Eleft 2behind by their 21 tour guide. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. “Kahit naiwan kami ng tour guide, nagsariling lakad kami pagpunta sa Mount Fuji,” Enchong says. TFC MARCH-APRIL 2014.indd 21

ike most boys, brothers Enrique and Javy Gil have a passion for cars and driving. The latter, especially, became a source of bonding for the 21-year-old actor and his brother, a nursing graduate-turnedreal estate broker, after their father succumbed to leukemia in 2008. Following their father’s death, the older Javy became his brother’s constant companion, driving him everywhere. “Our dad was the one who used to drive for him. But after he died, ako ’yung pumalit,” says Javy. “The first three years of Quen’s career, taping, shooting, 22

The Nitro, a compact and mid-sized sport utility vehicle (SUV), was—despite its reputation for being a gas-guzzler (a full tank costs about P5,000)—was a good-looking car and appealed to the boys, who were attracted to its boxy exterior and strong, bold color. “Maganda ’yung color red. We had a yellow car, and a black car,

pero medyo bihira ka lang makakita ng ganoong shade na red and it looked perfect sa Nitro,” Javi explains. What also made it an attractive buy was that the Dodge Nitro had a Load ‘N Go Cargo Floor feature: a sliding cargo floor that slid out 18 inches over the rear bumper, and which could hold up to 400 pounds of weight. It also had a six-speaker audio system, a feature that Enrique and Javy, who enjoy playing loud music when they drive, considered the cherry on top. “I wanted something I could use for taping, that I could also take kapag may lakad lang ako.

Javy, who usually drives the Nitro now, agrees that the SUV is worth every centavo they spent. “Maganda ’yung features niya, like ’yung speakers, ang ganda. ’Yung space, at feel of driving is sobrang comfortable,” he says.

Enter Bumblebee

But then, another car came along that made the boys fall hopelessly in love:

the yellow car in the Transformers film, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Bumblebee. With its black leather upholstery, yellow trim, Autobot shield logo and 20-inch alloy wheels, it was one of the most masculine-looking power cars around. The instant he set eyes on it, Enrique knew he had to have one. But it wasn’t just Enrique that considered the Bumblebee Camaro a dream car. After the release of Transformers movie in 2007, so many people wanted to own a “transforming” car like the Bumblebee, so named because of its yellow and black color. “Nu’ng una kong nakita,

(Left) The highly-detailed front panel of the car houses controls for many of the car’s luxury features, such as Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB connectivity, and an XM Satellite Radio. Even its alloy wheel caps (right) carry the Transformers’ Autobot logo. (Top and right) The black rally stripe goes up to the hood and the low spoiler adds a very sleek look to the Bumblebee Camaro. (Above) the car’s steering wheel is wrapped in leather, giving it a more powerful, masculine finish and touch.

I was watching the movie and I was like, ‘So sexy ’yung kotse na ’yan!’ So I fell in love.” Transformers is an American science fiction action film franchise based on the Transformers toy line which features wheeled vehicles—cars and trucks—that “transform”, hence the title, into fighting robots. The good robots are called Autobots, and the ‘bad’ ones, Decepticons. Megan, the 27-year-old female lead star of the movie series, is an actress and model and considered one of the sexiest women in the world. So when Azkals striker Phil Younghusband put his 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Bumblebee up for sale, Quen (Enrique’s nickname) did not have to think twice about shelling out the money to buy it. He was on location somewhere in Tanay, Rizal when it was delivered to him by his driver. His reaction when he finally laid eyes on it was one of pure excitement. He couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel. “When it arrived, I said ‘Oh my God! Ayan na ’yung car ko!’ Pinaharurot ko siya sa mountains, I was trying it out. Sobrang masaya,” shares Enrique. While it’s already a very handsome-looking car, Quen plans to enhance its appeal even more by modifying a few parts, like the lights that run underneath and along the sides, and the car’s exhaust and muffler system. A car expert says that these measures can improve a car’s performance, although minimally; their purpose is more decorative and aesthetic than anything else. Enhancing the lights, for instance, makes the car more attractive at night. Javy still uses the Nitro to go to the gym, the mall, and sometimes to drive himself to work, while Enrique, who also bought a Hyundai Starex van (the van has rotating seats and a built-in DVD player, two of Quen’s favorite features) that he uses mostly for work, drives the Camaro when he has the time. And even now, the brothers talk about buying their 24

next dream car. For Quen—obviously an avid comic book movie fan— that’s the Honda Acura NSX, the same car that Iron Man’s alter-ego Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey, Jr.) used in The Avengers, a comic book movie in which Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor team up to stop Thor’s adoptive brother Loki from taking over the Earth. At the end of the movie, Stark is shown getting into a red convertible Acura and driving off with Bruce Banner, aka The Hulk. The car, however, does not exist yet (it took three months to create the car that was used in that final film sequence): the buzz is that the Acura NSX will come on the market in 2015, at about the same time that the sequel to The Avengers is expected to hit theaters, which means that Quen still has some time to save up for it, which he most likely will. In an interview in the September 2012 issue of StarStudio, Quen talked about buying an Acura NSX. “Di pa final ang price, pero sana hindi masyadong mahal. Really beautiful, that car. Luxury car lang talaga ’yon. Pang-collection lang.” This is where their shared passion for cars diverges: Quen, who prefers the more flashy types, believes that every car is an art form on wheels and likes to collect cars, while the more practical Javy likes his rides simple and functional, “I’m trying to save up for my own car. I want a Mitsubishi Lancer GTA. It’s cheaper than our cars, pero I just want it simple kasi eh. I want to have my own car, something that I can call mine, and drive it the way I want it,” says Javy.

DANIEL PADILLA

Today’s popular teen idol’s big travel dream is to buy his own airplane, so he can hop on it and fly off to wherever he feels like going By Julian Mauricio

D

Special thanks to KARLA ESTRADA and ARMAND KRUZ

aniel Padilla is something of an adventurer. Long before showbiz came calling, he considered becoming a pilot because it seemed like an “astig” profession. “Parang ang angas-angas kasi ng mga piloto. Naka-shades pa sila parati,” he explains in a semi-joking way to StarStudio. The sartorial perks of the job aside, being a pilot appeals to his adventurous nature. He describes himself as a spurof-the-moment traveler. He dreams of just taking off and exploring the different corners of the world. Although becoming a pilot is now out of the question because of the demands that come with being local showbiz’s Teen King, he still wants to own an airplane so he can take it where he wants, when he wants. “Bibili na lang ako ng eroplano,” he laughs. “’Pag lumipad ako, kung saan may land, doon ako bababa. Bahala na kung saan man ’yun. Gusto ko ’yung para akong adventure traveler na hindi ko alam ’yung mangyayari.” Ironically, despite his interest in aviation, Daniel gets restless on long flights. When he traveled to Alaska on tour with other Star Magic artists in 2012, the trip took a total of 21 hours, with several layovers on top of that, and the plane couldn’t land soon enough for him. He also doesn’t relish the idea of being just a passenger—he’d much rather be in the driver’s seat, or pilot’s seat, as the case may be. He likes traveling on his own terms. He’s not the type to plan a trip down to the last detail; he’ll choose a destination, then once there, go wherever his fancy takes him. Daniel isn’t against having a general idea of what to do or where to go, but he believes any more planning than that will take the fun out of a trip. “Kailangan may alam ka pa rin kasi siyempre, mamaya hindi mo alam mali na pala ginagawa mo, so dapat magtanong-tanong ka din sa mga tao,” he advises. “Hindi naman masamang humingi ng suggestions. Hindi rin naman maganda kung wala ka talagang alam o balak kung ano ang gagawin mo pagdating mo sa isang lugar.” Having said that, however, he says travelers should take others’ suggestions into consideration without getting too caught up in them. “Magtanong ka kung ano ang magandang gawin. ’Pag sa tingin mo trip mo, puntahan mo.” 26

Boy in Flight

Daniel enjoyed chilling at their hotel—the Marco Polo, named after the historical Italian merchant traveler— as much as he did roaming the streets of Hong Kong. “Ang daming oras na nasa hotel lang kami kasi may lugar doon sa sixth floor na maganda ’yung view. Doon lang kami, fini-feel namin ’yung lugar.” The Marco Polo (below) is located in the very heart of Kowloon, along Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui and offers an amazing view of Victoria Harbour, inarguably Hong Kong’s most famous natural landmark.

Daniel enjoyed his first trip to Hong Kong so much that he chose to go back a year later, this time with his mother, siblings and friends. From left to right: Daniel, his mother actress-singer Karla Estrada, younger sisters Carmela (with headband) and Margaret, and younger brother JC Padilla. JC is lead singer of their band Parking 5 while Daniel is the bassist. The band began recording their debut album late last year before jetting off to Hong Kong.

HAPPY LAND Daniel didn’t have to go far to take one of the best and most memorable trips of his life

Hong Kong is Daniel’s happy place. He first went there in December 2012 with his onscreen partner Kathryn Bernardo, her mother Min Bernardo, and Armand Cruz, his mother Karla Estrada’s best friend whom he calls ‘Tito Do.’ “Gusto mag-shopping ni Kathryn at ni Tita Min. So ako naman, tinanong ko kung pwede ba kami sumama ni Tito Do. Gusto ko kasi makapunta ng ibang bansa na hindi dahil sa work. Sabi niya, ‘Sige, pwede.’” But Daniel’s free-wheeling approach to traveling didn’t sit well with all his traveling companions. “’Di ba ayoko nga ng nakaplano ang lahat ng mangyayari? Gusto ko, bahala na. Hindi ako maintindihan ni Tita Min noon, eh. Kasi may mga plano kami na nababago bigla kasi nagbabago ang isip ko. Sinasabi niya, ‘Ano ba ’yan, pinlano na ’yan.’” One thing that made the trip more enjoyable for Daniel was spending time with Kath outside of work as she went shopping. “Siyempre masarap kasama si Kath sa biyahe lalo na kung nag-sho-shopping siya. Kahit tagabuhat lang ako ng pinamili niya, okay lang kasi

This photo of Daniel’s mother, actress-singer Karla Estrada, and his two sisters Margaret and Carmela, was taken in Disneyland. This was Daniel’s second time to go to Hong Kong Disneyland, which he enjoyed more than his first. “Nung unang beses kasi na pumunta ako doon umulan tapos super daming tao kaya di ako masyadong nag-enjoy.”

masarap naman ’yung feeling na ganun. Na-e-enjoy ko naman na kasama ko siya. Kahit napapagod na ako sa pagbuhat, masaya ako kapag nakikita kong masaya siya.” The second time he went to Hong Kong was during the recent holiday season. “Sobrang memorable ’yun. As much fun as Daniel had savoring the sights and sounds of a foreign country, he also enjoyed running into fellow Pinoys in Hong Kong. “Masarap sa ibang

bansa pero iba pa rin ’pag kausap mo kapwa mong Pilipino.”

MAKE IT FUN

Daniel says travel opens the mind to new things, and shares tips on how to make the experience both educational and fun Daniel thinks it’s important for everyone to travel in order to learn new things—not just about the world, but about one’s self too. “Para sa akin, lesson ang travel. ’Pag pumunta ka kasi sa ibang bansa, ibang environment na ’yung makikita mo. Iba ’yung happiness na makukuha mo doon. Iba din ’yung matutuklasan mo. Nakaka-refresh ng utak ang pag-travel, kaya kailangan mo din talaga lumabas-labas ng bansa kahit paano,” he says. From Daniel’s storehouse of travel memories, here are three tips on how to make traveling with friends more fun:

1

LET IT GO. “Suggestion ko, ’pag kasama ang barkada, wag niyong planuhin ang gagawin niyo. Saka niyo na lang planuhin ’pag nandun na kayo, ’di ba? Hindi ’yung porke’t naririnig n’yo na ito ang okay gawin sa isang lugar, ’yun na ang gagawin n’yo. Wag n’yo sunurin ’yun. Ang gawin n’yo, pagdating n’yo doon, saka n’yo tingnan kung anu-ano ang pwede niyong gawin.”

2 3

STAND BY ME. “Huwag kayong maghiwa-hiwalay, magsama-sama lang kayo.”

BE PREPARED. He may not travel with a prepared itinerary, but he likes to pack everything he’ll need. “Salamin at shades ang lagi kong dala kasi ’di ba malabo ang mata ko? Sa gabi kailangan ko magsuot. Kailangan ko din ng sumbrero at extrang sapatos. Hindi ko kaya na isa lang ang dala kong sapatos ’pag lumalabas ako ng bansa. Minsan nga nagdadala ako ng dalawa pero identical lang. Okay lang kahit pareho basta may extra,” he laughs. “Hindi ako nagsusuot ng tsinelas kasi feeling ko ang pangit tignan sa akin. Nagdadala din ako ng plain t-shirts.”

WANDERLUST

Daniel names the four corners of the world he’s most eager to explore

1. AFRICA – “Gusto kong pumunta doon tapos mag-safari,” Daniel says excitedly. “Dadalhin ko ’yung Polaris ko, tapos iikot-ikot lang ako doon.” A Polaris—commonly known as an all-terrain vehicle (ATV)—is designed for use on various types of roads, especially very rough ground. It is an open and small vehicle that usually has three or four wheels. Daniel has gone off-roading with his Got to Believe co-star Ian Veneracion, and he is eager to do more of it soon. 2. Daniel’s timing is perfect, as “Sin City” is now trying to appeal to a younger crowd. 3. NEW YORK – Daniel has also expressed a desire to visit the city that never sleeps. He’s an old soul, and something about New York’s rich history appeals to him. “’Yung mga boulevards nila doon, gusto kong makita sa personal. May pagka-old school kasi ’yung lugar. Astig para sa akin.” 4. ANTARCTICA – Most people would think there’s really nothing to see in the Earth’s southernmost continent, but Daniel disagrees. He’d like to see some of the wildlife there for himself, like penguins and polar bears. “Gusto ko rin pumunta sa Antarctica. Gusto kong magcruise doon. ’Yung ibig kong sabihin, hindi basta-bastang cruise lang. Gusto ko maging sailor doon,” he laughs.

THUMBS UP, PHILIPPINES!

Daniel recognizes the importance of tourism as a way to promote Filipino culture. “It’s more fun in the Philippines” is more than just a slogan for the Teen King. “Sa dami ng ibang bansa na napuntahan ko, iba pa rin ang pagiging friendly ng mga Pinoy, grabe. Parang sa tingin ko, ’pag pumunta ang foreigner sa Pilipinas, mararamdaman niya na parang kapatid niya lahat ng tao doon. Oo, may mga taong olats din sa Pilipinas pero mas marami pa rin ang mababait na tao dito.”

I WANNA GO BACK TO… Daniel and his family had fun in Hong Kong over the holidays, but there’s one other place he wants to visit with them in tow. “Alaska. Ewan ko kung bakit. Gusto ko ipakita sa kanila ’yung lugar. Gustung-gusto ko doon kasi napaka-magical niya para sa akin. Iba talaga ’yung feeling ko nung nandun ako. Parang ayoko nang umalis. Pwede ka na ata tumanda sa lugar na ’yun. Ang sarap.” Daniel first went to Alaska in 2012 with Kathryn for the Teleserye Royals tour.

BEATLEMANIA

Daniel has already followed in the footsteps of his idols by venturing into music. Now he wants to go where they once did Daniel is a big fan of the Beatles, so when we asked him where he’d like to go on an all-expenses paid trip, he was quick to say “London.” He says he would love to visit the classic rock icons’ old stomping grounds. An Internet search turned up many Beatles-themed travel packages, such as The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour—named after an album they released in 1967—and The Beatles’ In My Life walk. Such packages will take a Beatles fan to places like the Abbey Road crosswalk and studios where they recorded their 1969 album of the same name; the locations for their movies A Hard Day’s Night and Help!; and the house where John Lennon and Paul McCarney wrote the song “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.”

he story rests on an intriguing plot line: a female radio host is afflicted with a disease called hypertrichosis which causes an abnormal amount of hair growth that covers the body. Despite this, her seductive voice wins her a big following and makes her advice program, Moon of Desire, popular among its listeners. Many fans love her but her true identity must remain hidden because of her unusual appearance. The mysterious DJ Ayla is played by newcomer Meg Imperial, with other important roles played by JC de Vera and sexy actress Ellen Adarna, plus up-and-coming actors Dominic Roque and Miko Raval. More than a feast for the eyes, Moon of Desire will make the summer days even hotter with its talented cast guided by director FM Reyes. MEG’S STAY SEXY TIP: “No rice, although hirap ako ngayon dahil ‘di ako makapag-work out since everyday ang taping ko. Dinadaan ko sa diet: no rice, more on fish. No carbs. ‘Pag walang taping, nag-wo-work out ako doing boxing or Muay Thai.”

INNOCENT SEDUCTRESS

Meg Imperial talks about her travel plans, adventures and her newest undertaking It is now her turn to step into the spotlight. Though she’s no beginner in acting (she also starred in Galema alongside Andi Eigenmann) and in striking sexy poses for men’s magazines, Meg is still nervous about Moon of Desire, her first big project with ABS-CBN. According to her, one of the biggest challenges is portraying DJ Ayla’s character convincingly, with the prosthetic hair covering her whole body and face. Meg admits that despite the huge physical difference between her and her Moon of Desire character, they also have something in common: “’Yung character niya na hindi palalabas, ganu’n din ako. Nasanay ako na palaging nasa bahay,” says Meg. But when wanderlust bites, Meg is always up for a new adventure. A self-confessed homebody, Meg is not the type to go backpacking across countries or to spontaneously plan a trip to some secluded island but she knows how to have fun whenever she gets a chance to travel. Among her favorite places are Baguio, with its cool weather and pine trees, and Subic. “Before pa ako mag-start sa Galema, palagi akong nasa Subic,” Meg shares. Going back to her province in Bicol with her Mommy Rose and Daddy Lester is also on her list of memorable trips, though the reason behind it is quite unusual. “Nu’ng umuwi kasi kami ng Bicol, parang ako lang yata ’yung nag-enjoy. Nag-wakeboarding kasi ako sa CWC (Camsur Watersports Complex), tapos tinitignan lang ako ng family ko. Ayaw kasi nila, gusto lang nila magmuni-muni,” she says. Meg made friends with the other people waiting in line because she didn’t have anyone with her at the time. With that face and figure, Meg might seem like the typical beach bombshell, but ironically, she has yet to set foot in Boracay, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. She’s hoping she can visit soon. With her busy schedule—made even busier by her new taping schedule for Moon of Desire— Meg has little to no time for a vacation. But whenever she goes on one, she makes sure to bring her camera and organizer. “Nakalagay du’n ’yung mga gusto kong gawin at ’yung checklist. Pag ma-complete ko siya, sobrang happy ko na nu’n,” she says. Indeed, for Meg, capturing each moment and making the most out of it are what can turn some free time into a truly memorable vacation.

A HUNK’S ESCAPE

JC’S STAY SEXY TIP: “I always do a cardio workout, regular boxing and swimming. I try to never miss working out. Sa diet naman, I avoid salty food and tuloy ang healthy eating talaga.”

Actor JC de Vera’s ideal vacation is to get away from the glitz and glam of showbiz, even just for a while

BEACH BOY. (1) Another true beach lover, JC remembers spending one Christmas vacation with friends during which they ended up in Baler, Aurora. The province, named after the wife of President Manuel Quezon, is a popular surfing destination; (2) The rest of the photos were taken when JC celebrated his birthday in Boracay with friends, family and even his nephew who joined him in playing with the sand.

With so many things going on for hunky actor JC de Vera, taking time off does not seem to be an option for him right now. As of this writing, he is taping for his current ABS-CBN primetime drama The Legal Wife (with Angel Locsin and Jericho Rosales) and also for Moon of Desire where he will play Jepoy, the childhood friend of Ayla (Meg Imperial). From being a street kid, Jepoy becomes successful through hard work. JC describes his character as someone who is “longing for friends, mga tao na magbibigay sa kanya ng love and affection”. But if he does get that time off, the first place he’ll go to is the beach. He especially likes the fine white sands of Boracay and the gorgeous beaches of Palawan. “Memorable trip ’yung birthday ko nu’ng 2012. My whole family and friends were there, at first time siya ng family ko sa Bora,” shares JC whose birthday falls on March 10. The whole trip was JC’s treat (yes, he even paid for the air fare!). “Basta relaxing and private,” those are the things JC looks for when he goes on trips. He’s not much into extreme activities or partying hard while on vacation; rather, he’s the type who lazes around or sleeps. He even goes hotel hopping around the metro when he has the time. He searches for nice hotels, tries out new restaurants and just unwinds. This laidback, hunky traveler dreams of flying off to the breathtaking Greek isles. Next on his dream vacation list is Hawaii, known for its white, black, green and red sand beaches, romantic bays and beach parks for the family. Also on his list is a European tour with his family which he admits he’s still saving up for. Although JC is busy right now, he considers everything a

blessing.

DARING DIVA

ELLEN’S STAY SEXY TIP: “My cheat day is spread out. I have three cheat meals. Instead of gorging one whole day, may cheat meals ka throughout the week to keep you sane. Also, don’t stop working out kasi the more muscles you have, the more calories you burn at rest.”

Vivacious and sexy Ellen Adarna is always game for new adventures, no matter where they may take her She’s a sought-after cover girl for men’s magazines; her allure is undeniable, and she’s raring to show her acting skills in Moon of Desire. Officially her first starring role in the Kapamilya network, Ellen Adarna is looking forward to playing a character far removed from her real personality. “It’s very challenging because the character is not me at all,” she says. “I’m very koboy, walang ka-poise poise minsan. Nandu’n pa rin naman ako, pero this one is completely different.” In this new teleserye, she will portray Tamara, a doctor from a rich family who will fall for Jepoy (JC de Vera) and compete for his love. Off camera, Ellen loves going out and traveling; in fact it has been her family’s tradition to go overseas every year, although she hasn’t been able to accompany them for the past three years. Her favorite so far of the trips they’ve been on was when they went to Holland when she was a senior in high school. She loved the people, flowers, scenery and the cheese so much that she intends to return and never come back to the Philippines. “I want to live there forever. The vibe is so chill, very relaxing, very colorful, at least ’yun ’yung nakita ko nu’n as a tourist.” Hong Kong is also a regular stop for her. She’s been there many times before and practically knows her way around the city. “It’s almost like home. I know the place so well, I don’t get lost anymore,” Ellen says. Though there was a time when she cried her eyes out when she got lost in Hong Kong; she was with her best friend then. “Di namin alam, may cut-off pala ’yung mga bus na ’yan. It was around 10PM, kakarating lang namin and kami naman, we were like ‘bahala na’. Sabi na lang nu’ng driver, ’yun na ’yung last stop. I didn’t know how we got home,” she adds. Despite the occasional misadventures, Ellen’s daring, adventurous spirit isn’t beyond hopping on a plane to go somewhere. Her travel advice? “It’s best to go where you have friends, someone to take you around so can experience the place the way the locals do.” 32

DOMINIC’S STAY SEXY TIP: Ma-gulay ako ngayon. At saka exercise talaga; ang cardio ko is badminton. May circuit training din. At least four times a week ang workout ko.

SAND LOVIN’

A more mature and sexier Dominic Roque shares all the fun he has under the summer sun Obviously, he is no longer the young teen heartthrob from Aryana and May Isang Pangarap. Dominic Roque takes on a more mature and daring role in Moon of Desire as he portrays Vince, a photographer who acts tough but really has a soft heart. “Mukhang laging may problema sa mundo pero kapag nagmahal binibigay lahat,” Dom says. The 23-year old actor admits that he is both challenged and excited for his character, as it is totally different from what he’s done in the past. Off camera, Dominic likes to hang out with his friends and go to the beach. At the top of his must-go places list is the famous white sand beach of Boracay. “Maraming tao, masaya,” he shares. But his best visit there was in 2012 when he was not yet in show business. He had more freedom to go exploring around the island. “For six days, wala kaming iniisip kundi lumabas lang,” he adds. Dom also traveled to South Korea with his family and visited Hong Kong a couple of times. “Tapos sa Hong Kong naman, every time we go there, laslas ang wallet,” Dom jokes, adding that he likes to bargain-shop for t-shirts and shoes. He also points out that when it comes to traveling, who you’re with is very important. With all the trips he has gone on, Dom makes sure he always has a hygiene kit handy. When he’s out with friends, you would never spot him with a map or asking how to get a place because he’s good at memorizing directions. Just tell him what you want to do and he’ll come up with an enjoyable place and lead you there. “Matandain kasi ako sa lugar eh. ’Pag kasama ko ’yung friends ko, ako ’yung nag-le-lead kung saan pupunta,” he says.

MIKO’S STAY SEXY TIP: “At least four times a week ako mag-exercise. Basketball once a week. Yung diet ko, di naman ako super-strict pero yung breakfast ko, cereals, then lunch before workout. Yung dinner ko, maaga, ready na 5:30 to 6PM, then after nu’n, wala na.”

WORLD TRAVELER

Miko Raval may be new to the biz but this ex-basketball hottie is no rookie in traveling around the world Tall and with a ruggedly handsome appeal, newcomer Miko Raval, a former member of the UP Men’s Basketball Team training pool, is someone to watch out for. His big break came when he bagged the role of Aaron Diaz in Moon of Desire. “Ako dito ’yung sound engineer ni DJ Ayla. All I do is assist her sa show niya. Pero as the story progresses, magkakaroon ng love triangle,” explains Miko. Miko has a fun and outgoing personality that shows in his fondness for new places and “going wherever his feet will take him”-type adventures. He has traveled as far as Jordan and Israel with his family. He has walked through the marvelous Petra, also known as Rose City, a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma’an that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. “Tapos nag-pilgrimage trip kami sa Jerusalem, ’yung Stations of the Cross. Then nag-Tel Aviv din kami sa Israel,” recalls Miko. But what happened to him in Japan about two Christmases ago might well have been one of the craziest adventures ever. “Naligaw ako. Papunta kami sa restaurant para mag-dinner, tapos first day namin so tinitignan talaga namin nang mabuti ’yung mga places. Tapos pagtingin namin, biglang sabi ko ‘Nasaan na ’yung mga kasama natin?’ We asked around, kaya lang mahirap kausapin ang mga Hapon in English. Buti na lang may picture ako nu’ng lugar,” Miko shares, even adding how they ended up running around the streets in very cold weather. “Tumakbo pa kami, so pagdating namin sa resto, ’yung mukha namin, mamalat-malat.” But despite all his trips abroad, for Miko, it is still more fun in the Philippines, especially in Boracay. “For me New Year and LaBoracay, ibang klase ’yung experience,” he says. LaBoracay is a non-stop partying event held during the Labor Day weekend, hence the name. No matter if it’s traveling to party hard or to relieve stress, Miko leaves his gadgets behind so he can fully be in the moment. “Ayaw ko

s Citizen Pinoy gears up for its 14th season, Attorney Michael Gurfinkel and the entire staff of Citizen Pinoy remain committed to bringing inspirational and informative immigration “success” stories and to helping the many struggling Filipino viewers realize their American Dreams. Over the years, Atty. Gurfinkel’s keen ability to connect with his audience with “plain English” explanation of complex laws and procedures, continues to captivate the hearts of every Filipino. His practical solutions as an attorney, empathy as a human being, and the featured stories that identify the daily struggles and immigration issues that Filipinos go through make Citizen Pinoy a staple TV show for them. From Season 1 to Season 13, Filipinos from different walks of life shared their stories: sent airportto-airport, receiving notices of deportation, subjected to dreadful lifetime bans, committing fraud with assumed name entries, and to obtaining green cards. Through Atty.

Gurfinkel’s guiding hand, Filipinos overcame their fears and immigration hurdles. Courage, resilience, persistence, and passion for service are the glues that bind the entirety of Citizen Pinoy—from the host Atty. Gurfinkel, the staff of Citizen Pinoy, our guests, to our audience. Citizen Pinoy is the culmination of all these forces and relationships, that in the long run has provided comfort for all the Lolos, Lolas, Nanays, Tatays, Titas, Titos, Ates, and Kuyas from across the continents as they tune in week after week. Citizen Pinoy was among the first television shows to provide valuable immigration news and information. Before that, many people would rely on rumors, gossip, or “advice” from well-meaning relatives or from unscrupulous immigration consultants. Because of Atty. Gurfinkel and Citizen Pinoy’s dedication, Filipinos have a reliable source of information, which clears up all the myths, gossip, and rumors, and provides the truth and the facts.

Citizen Pinoy’s Atty. Gurfinkel, Gearing up for Season 14! Atty. Gurfinkel as he explains in “plain English” the complicated immigration laws and procedures each Sunday in the comforts of our Kapamilyas homes. Stay tuned for more, as we prepare for Season 14.

Citizen Pinoy is not just a show you watch for “entertainment value.” It’s more than that—it’s a weekly gathering of Kapamilyas wherever we may be, so we can all be there for each other—sharing the joys and burdens of every Filipino immigrant, learning and taking courage and inspiration from one another.

AMONG FRIENDS

In a special edition of StarSpeak, Vhong Navarro’s It’s Showtime co-hosts come together to reflect on values like friendship, truth, honesty and courage--topics that have come to mean a lot to them in the light of recent events that have taken the media by storm

STAR SPEAK

The years have taught me kung paano igalang ang ibang mga tao, mga kapwa mo. And through experience dito sa showbiz, kailangang matuto kang lumingon sa pinanggalingan mo. ANNE CURTIS The best in dancing, that’s Vhong. Each day, he makes me laugh. VICE GANDA It’s hard to lose a friend like Vhong. Laughter is a habit that you enjoy with your friends. BILLY CRAWFORD One thing trustworthy, that’s a friend. A friend should be cherished forever. KARYLLE The world needs more love. The truth is sometimes hard to swallow, but a true friend will always find the courage to tell you the truth. KIM ATIENZA The bonds of friendship are such that you are there when you are needed most. If it’s not possible for you to physically be there, be there emotionally for your friend. It’s easy—there’s text, there’s telephones. Be there when the friend needs you.

True strength lies in admitting one’s mistake, apologizing for it, and then doing what’s necessary or whatever is required.

COLEEN GARCIA True courage is not the absence of fear, but having the strength and bravery to overcome that fear.

JUGS JUGUETA The thing that separates a good friend from a best friend is that ’yung best friend is there through everything, thick and thin, mga more than 20 years na kayong magkaibigan. Ganoon.

No one really knows what goes on behind the closed doors of any person who isn’t yourself.

TEDDY CORPUZ Tne thing that separates a good friend from a best friend is siguro ’yung attitude. Kumbaga, a friend can be anybody. Pwedeng kahit sino, maging kaibigan mo. A best friend, ayaw niyang masaktan ’yung feelings mo. For me, ’yon ang pinaka-importante.

I S S U E

ERIC TAI (ERUPTION) You should never give up on yourself. For me, it goes along the lines of believing in yourself, trusting in yourself—and no matter what anyone else is saying, it all comes down to self-belief. Don’t listen to the naysayers, or anyone else’s views and opinions. It’s up to you. I have always believed that God will always be on your side. No matter what situation you’re going through, no matter what trial or tribulation that arises in our lives, always believe in God, He will always have your back. - Interview by Francis Simeon
