Di Maria cost more than January’s house sales Cambridge United shouldn’t be too dispirited in relation to their recent cup exit. Manchester United’s recent record signing, Angel Di Maria, cost more than all 177 properties sold across the Cambridge area between 1st of January and 6th February last year. The £231 million value for their starting 11 would be equivalent to all properties sold up to 24th April last year. (Land Registry, BBC)
1.5% - monthly regional growth in the East of England The latest Land Registry data reveals the East of England was the second best regional performer in terms of house price growth in December, with an increase of 1.5%, second only to London with 1.8%. This compares favourably with the UK average of 0.6%. The worst performer was the North West with a decline of 1.6% (Land Registry)

Market View New homes built fell 6.2% in 2014 The number of new homes registered in the Eastern region fell to 13,500 in 2014, down from 14,387 in 2013. It was the only region in the UK to experience a fall, with the average across the UK increasing by 7.7% and Yorkshire and the Humber leading the way with 24.4%. This lack of supply should help drive demand in the region. (NHBC)
Premium prices for new build properties The lack of supply could partly explain this premium. New build properties around Cambridge tend to command a significant premium over second hand homes, the only exception being detached residences. The luxury apartments being built in the area show the greatest difference, with the average new build flat being 44% more expensive. This £109,000 difference, with a 4% mortgage, would represent around £575 extra each month. (Land Registry)

2.5% increase in mortgage approvals from November to December 2014 The latest Bank of England figures reveal a seasonally adjusted increase in the number of mortgage approvals as buyers continue to seek opportunities before the election. £1.5 billion – estimated cost of improvements to the A14 The planning inspectorate is to consider improvements to the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon to include a new bypass, road widening and improved junctions.
