Seashell - Creating the Architecture of Sound
This is a semester project in which interior students collaborate with architecture students in a group of 4. We moved forward from learning about biomimicry in architecture to design the School of Construction and School of Sustainability at Arizona State University. The concept of this project is based strictly upon what is crucial to designing institutional and office buildings, in this case, sustainability and productivity. as well as relating to the associated natural climate and topography condition of Arizona, which is heat and water saving. As a result, the idea of heat absorbtion, inspired by the bird’s feather, dictates the site; whereas, sound absorbtion, inspired by the concept of a seashell, dictates the interior space planning. We also accomodated the required programming to regulate how the feather pattern and soundwave pattern flex on the site. In other words, various intensities of the human activities further sculpt the patterns, site and space planning to provide an interesting journey of sensory experiences for the users, creating this whole process of social space synchronization. The project proposes the idea of using the buildings as a learning tool for the faculty and the students. For the interior, we propose the concept of modularity to shape how the students interact and collaborate with each other as well as how they engage in the learning experiences. RAIN WATER RETAINING PONDS INTERIOR GROUND GARDEN
Core Programming: Inspired by the fins of the feather, a sustainable geo-thermal system for heat sink is created and pushed to South side together with the building core (elevators, bathrooms, HVAC, services, etc). By doing this, the entire system is exposed for effective learning (from outside, inside, through circulation), which creates a closed loop as the students not only use the buildings for their educational purposes but also have the opportunity to contribute back to building the sustainable systems. Also, the building core acts as a sound barrier for the interior while creating free, open areas for flexible space planning. This enhances a strong relationship between the exterior and interior, and how the programmings/human activities, in return, affect the buildings’ design.
South side - The exposed systems of heat sink and solar panels placing vertically and diagonally become a shading structure for the buildings and the rooftops. Rainwater collection systems are integrated into the rooftop gardens. The water collected will be transferred and filtered through the building core and go down to the ASU ground gardens. North side - a system of glass facades, mezannines and catwalks are installed for the underground labs, 1st and 2nd floor for office and learning spaces. The mezannines move in the direction from South to North and able to enter the back garden if needed. This enables possibilities for growing space programming in the future.

The main courtyard and the pits are community areas for the students. Garage doors and tilt-up concrete are used, making it possible for rebuilding bigger collaboration spaces. Glass facades on the North can be opened up for the mezannines to move out. The project strongly demonstrates the sustainable aspect of architecture and design in how the buildings are being used and maintained in the long-term.

The diagrams on the left relate the feather pattern to the labs’ kits of parts. More condensed chevron shapes dedicate larger scale furniture. Black areas are locations of the mezannines moving to integrate with the bleachers for community learning experiences. Different levels of soundwaves imply the intensity of human activities for each vignette on section view. We design modular pods for individual and/or private meeting spaces. Customized lockers as well as constructionbased research areas are also provided to benefit the learning process.

Kits of Parts - Vignettes of Rooftop Gardens
The left side are diagrams with similar approach as the lab spaces’. More condensed chevron shapes represent customized modular pods that can be opened up to become larger semi-outdoor meeting areas, while wooden community movable blocks are for flexble seating and working environment. Rooftop gardens are the final destinations of the buildings. The idea is to create the third-place escape, a place for reflection. This is also where students get inspired, and contribute back to the schools. Human activities strongly dictate how these rooftops are designed. Integrating the exposed sustainable system while maximizing the view access to nature bring the traditional classrooms outdoor. With modular furniture provided, each rooftop defines a different sensory experience that is created for focus zones, collaborating areas, retail, exhibition spaces, green gardens, and movie screening.
