Canyon de Chelly - Arizona
The Spanish arrival in the southern United States preempted an unprecedented cultural change in the indigenous population, with significant and lasting impacts on art and architecture. The collision of these worlds create a metaphorical a crossroad that is rich in culture and history. “Crossroads� recreates Canyon De Chelly, where the colonization took place. The design is a blend of structural component, inspired by the magnificent desert scene, with decorative arts from Spanishcolonial style and Navajo ornamentation. R: Main Dining Hall
The interior is designed using local materials such as copper, stone, custom antique furniture and Navajo rugs. As the canyon creates shelters for the tribe, the lightbox structure forms private zones for the dining experience.
L: Main Dining Hall Conceptualization
LIGHTBOX STRUCTURE PARTS, ASSEMBLIES, & MATERIAL PROPERTIES 4” high for each wooden panel. The whole structure is 10’ high. The panels are laser cut with Navajo inspired pattern, then assembled together with C-channels, wood connecting pieces, and screws. The structure is held by steel frames. PIXEL ART SCREEN BAR INSTALLATION PARTS, ASSEMBLIES, & MATERIAL PROPERTIES 2”x2”x1” Copper Chips (a sustainable local material of Arizona) These chips are installed in layers to show the famous Native American hand-carving at Canyon de Chelly. It is backlit with LED in the evening.
