A trend that's lasted for several years is the blurring of the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living and has once again been a top topic at leading design fairs such as Maison & Objet, Ambiente and Salone del Mobile. The living room has moved outside. People now cook, eat, celebrate and relax al fresco. We've highlighted some of the finest furniture and accessories along with some gadgets for the open-air season against the backdrop of the Long Island Summer Lounge above the rooftops of Frankfurt.

Der Sommer findet draußen statt! Er wird auf dem Balkon, der Terrasse, im Garten und sogar im Hof mit Familie, Freunden, Nachbarn, aber auch gern allein mit einem schönen Buch oder Netflix-Film auf dem Tablet, einem Bierchen oder Wein und dem Blick in Richtung Himmel zelebriert.

Selbst der kleinste Balkon kann zum Al-Fresco-Wohnzimmer werden. Man braucht nur die richtigen Möbel, Accessoires und Gadgets.

Summer is coming outside! The warm season is being celebrated on the balcony, the terrace, in the garden and even in the yard in the company of family, friends, neighbours, but also just alone with a nice book or a Netflix film on a tablet, while sipping a beer or glass of wine and enjoying the view of the sky. Even the smallest balcony can become an al fresco living room. All you need is the right furniture, accessories and gadgets.

Aber warum sollte man überhaupt Unterschiede zwischen indoor und outdoor machen? Oftmals verschwimmen die Grenzen zwischen Salon und Terrasse, viele moderne bzw. modernisierte Häuser bieten den fließenden Übergang dank Wintergärten, bodentiefen Fenstern und Schiebetüren sowie Pavillon-Anbauten. Und die Möbel? Die werden von vielen Herstellern längst multikompatibel präsentiert.

But why make any distinction between being indoors or outdoors? Often the boundaries between the living room and terrace become blurred; many modern or revamped houses offer a smooth transition from inside to the open air thanks to conservatories, floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors as well as pavilions. And the furniture? Many manufacturers have long presented them in a multi-compatible way.

Die Kombination von zurückhaltenden Farbtönen und Knallfarben spielt eine große Rolle bei unseren Projekten. Auch die Haptik der Outdoormöbel hat sich zum Positiven verändert. Es wird wieder mutiger mit Materialien und Farben umgegangen, seien es knallige Keramikglasuren für Designobjekte, farbige Fliesentische oder Fäden, die eigentlich für Fischernetze verwendet werden. Der Qualität der Produkte tut dies dennoch keinen Abbruch.“

"Outdoor furniture has become increasingly relevant in recent years, as outdoor furniture is now also very well integrated into interior design," says Thommy Tritsch from Morgen Interiors. "We love accentuating places by using colourful outdoor furniture. The blend of restrained and bright colours plays a major role in our projects. The feel of outdoor furniture has also changed for the better. People are once again being more courageous when it comes to handling materials and colours, whether it's a matter of flashy ceramic glazes for designer pieces, colourful tile tables or yarns that are actually used for fishing nets. Still, this doesn't detract from the quality of the articles."

Apropos Materialien: Lag das einzige Augenmerk für Terrassentische und Stühle einst noch darauf, dass sie robust und gut verstaubar sind, werden heute Designklassiker inszeniert, die diesen pragmatischen Ansatz ebenso erfüllen wie die optischen Ansprüche von Designliebhabern. Das beste Beispiel hierfür ist der Panton Chair. Der Freischwinger, den Verner Panton 1960 entwarf, ist ein echter Klassiker der Möbelgeschichte, der bis heute in seiner unnachahmlichen Form von Vitra hergestellt wird. Man findet ihn in Büros, Praxen und Galerien, in Lofts, Apartments und Schlössern. Und man findet ihn sowohl drinnen als auch draußen, denn die Ikone des 20. Jahrhunderts ist nicht nur zeitlos schön, sondern auch äußerst strapazierfähig und praktisch.

Speaking of materials: once, the only focus when it came to patio tables and chairs was that they were sturdy and easy to store; these days, design classics still fulfil this pragmatic approach but also satisfy the visual demands of design aficionados. The best example of this is the Panton chair. The cantilevered plastic chair designed by Danish designer Verner Panton in 1960 is a true classic in furniture history, and is still being produced today in its inimitable form by Vitra. It can be found in all sorts of places: in offices, practices and galleries, lofts, apartments and castles. And you'll find it both indoors and out, since the 20th century icon isn't just timeless, but also extremely durable and practical.

Nicht umsonst zeichnet sie verantwortlich für das Interieur der stylischen W-Hotels und wird auch den Look des in Frankfurt entstehenden Marienturms verantworten. Ihre Tropicalia-Linie ist besonders geeignet, um auf Balkon, Terrasse oder im Garten, aber durchaus auch drinnen, Akzente zu setzen.

It is not for nothing that she is responsible for the interior of the stylish W hotels and will also be responsible for the look of the Marienturm tower being built in Frankfurt. Her Tropicalia line is particularly suitable for making a statement on the balcony, terrace or in the garden, but is also perfect indoors.

Ein Must fürs gemütliche Exterieur ist natürlich auch ein schönes Sofa – sofern es der Platz erlaubt. Wir lieben die einfache und geradlinige Formensprache der Toscana-Kollektion von Unopiù aus graphitgrauem Eisen, die viel Spielraum lässt, mit dekorativen Polstern, Kissen und Plaids ein gemütliches Outdoor-Wohnzimmer zu kreieren. Und weil im Sommer ja auch das Essen und Kochen überwiegend al fresco stattfinden, kommen wir last but not least zum Must-have für jeden Outdoor-Aficionado: dem Grill. Auch wenn die ganz orthodoxen Barbecueholics auf Holzkohle und Flammen stehen, geht doch für Vielgriller, die auch noch einen Job haben, nichts über Gas. Und für uns geht nichts über die Summit-Serie von Weber. Im Grunde kann man diese luxuriösen Alleskönner auch als komplette Outdoor-Küchen bezeichnen, an denen Steaks, Burger und Würstchen ebenso gut gelingen wie Leckeres vom Drehspieß.

And even if the very orthodox barbecue-holics plump for charcoal and flames, for frequent barbecuers who also have a job nothing tops gas. And nothing's better than Weber's Summit series. Basically, you can call these luxury all-rounders complete outdoor kitchens, where steaks, burgers and sausages are done to a turn just like tasty morsels on the rotisserie.

Essen, trinken, feiern, arbeiten oder einfach mal nichts tun… wir finden, wann immer das Wetter es zulässt, sollte man das open air tun. Denn frische Luft ist gesund, der Himmel und die Wolken ein Quell der Inspiration und der Sommer leider nicht endlos, wie unsere Headline verheißt.

Und unsere Design-Ideen? Die funktionieren natürlich wunderbar auf großzügigen Außenflächen, können aber mit ein wenig Phantasie auch auf dem kleinsten Balkon umgesetzt werden. Das wichtigste Tool für ein gelungenes Outdoor-Design ist ohnehin die Freude.

Eating, drinking, partying, working or just doing nothing – we think that whenever the weather permits, you should do it in the open air. Because fresh air is healthy; the sky and the clouds are a source of inspiration and the summer sadly not as endless as our headline says. And our design ideas?

Of course, they work wonderfully on generous outdoor surfaces, but with a little imagination can also be carried out on the smallest balcony. The key tool for a successful outdoor design is, after all, pleasure.

SHAKE IT! OMNITURM FRANKFURT

Mit dem Omniturm zieht ins Frankfurter Hochhausviertel gleich in mehrfacher Hinsicht ein besonderer Vertreter seiner Gattung ein. Entworfen hat ihn Bjarke Ingels – der Rockstar der zeitgenössischen Architektur.

A special example of its genre in many respects has now moved into Frankfurt's high-rise district in the form of the Omniturm. It was designed by Bjarke Ingels – the rock star of contemporary architecture.

HOME – OMNITURM

Nicht nur sein kesser Hüftschwung hebt sich von den ihn umgebenden Hochhäusern ab, auch das Innere des 190 Meter hohen Omniturms überzeugt durch einen fortschrittlichen Mix aus Wohnen und Arbeiten. Im Sockel, der sich über Vor- und Rücksprünge auszeichnet, wird sich noch Gastronomie ansiedeln, sodass die Ecke Große Gallusstraße/Neue Mainzer Straße, an der zuvor das Bankhaus Metzler residierte, belebter wird.

It’s not only the tower's jaunty lateral swing which makes it stand out from the surrounding skyscrapers. The interior of the 190 m high Omniturm also impresses with its progressive mix of residential and working space. The base, which is distinguished by its projections and recesses, will be used for gastronomic purposes, meaning that the corner of Grosse Gallusstrasse and Neue Mainzer Strasse, where Bankhaus Metzler used to reside, will now become somewhat livelier.

2015 konnte sich der dänische Architekt Bjarke Ingels mit seinem Büro BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) bei einem Wettbewerb gegen andere Mitstreiter durchsetzen – und damit bereichert der Entwurf eines Stararchitekten die Frankfurter Skyline: Ingels gilt als Rockstar der Branche.

In 2015, the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and his office BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) were able to see off their rivals to win a competition – the upshot of that victory is that a star architect’s design is now enriching the Frankfurt skyline: Ingels is regarded as the rock star of the industry.

Der Omniturm ist ein typischer Ingels-Bau, denn er bringt eine spielerische Leichtigkeit in die sonst so gradlinige, kantige Hochhaus-Landschaft in Frankfurt und nutzt den Bebauungsplan bestmöglich aus. Die Plaza zur Großen Gallusstraße hin sowie der neue Park auf dem Nachbargrundstück werden den Bewohnern und Nutzern zusätzliche Abwechslung und Erholung bieten. Der Hüftschwung – die Achsenverschiebung aus dem Zentrum heraus zwischen der 15. und 22. Etage, sodass das Gebäude bis zu vier Meter versetzt wird – ist aber nicht nur eine gestalterische Geste, denn die daraus gebildeten Terrassen können als Balkone genutzt werden. Sie gehören zu den 147 Wohnungen, die von 25 bis 175 Quadratmeter reichen und ab einem Quadratmeterpreis von 30 Euro vermietet werden.

Somit sind die obligatorischen Zutaten von Ingels Bauten, Luft und Licht, Natur und Umgebung, erfüllt.

The Omniturm is a typical Ingels building as it brings a playful lightness to the otherwise straight lines and angular skyscrapers of the landscape in Frankfurt and makes the best possible use of the development plan. The plaza facing Grosse Gallusstrasse and the new park on the neighbouring site will offer residents and users some additional variety and extra recreational options. However, the lateral swing – the shifting of the axes from the centre between the 15th and 22nd floors, so that the building is displaced by up to four metres – is not just a design feature: the terraces formed in this way can be used as balconies. They belong to the 147 apartments ranging from 25 to 175 m2, which are available to rent from a price of 30 per square metre. With this construction, the obligatory ingredients of an Ingels building – air and light, nature and the environment – are all present.

The remaining 44,200 m2 are allocated to offices: anchor tenants include US bank Morgan Stanley, international corporate lawyers Hogan Lovells, real estate services provider CBRE and another global banking group. This means that 60% of the office space has already been let. The first three floors will be open to the public: co -working spaces will be created here.

Diese Hybridtürme, wie sie im Fachjargon heißen, liegen rund um den Globus im Trend. Und machen sich auch in Frankfurt breit, wie man am Marienturm im Bankenviertel, dem Four in der Innenstadt und dem One Forty West an der Senckenberganlage sehen kann. Sie seien auf die Bedürfnisse von urbanen Digital Natives zugeschnitten, heißt es vom ursprünglichen Projektentwickler Tishman Speyer, der den Omniturm Ende 2018 an die Commerz Real verkauft hat.

These hybrid towers, as they are described in technical jargon, are in vogue around the globe. And they're also spreading into Frankfurt – as is evident in the Marienturm tower in the banking district, the Four in the city centre and the One Forty West in the Senckenber district. According to the original project developer, Tishman Speyer, who sold the Omniturm to Commerz Real at the end of 2018, they are tailored to meet the needs of urban digital natives.

ABOUT BJARKE INGELS Für seine ungewöhnlichen Wohnkomplexe in Kopenhagen ist Bjarke Ingels in den 00er Jahren bekannt geworden. Mittlerweile baut der 1974 geborene Däne mit seinem 2006 gegründeten Büro Bjarke Ingels Group, kurz BIG, weltweit spektakuläre Gebäude aller Art. Zu seinen bekanntesten Projekten gehört das Wohnhochhaus VIA 57 West in New York, das sich wie ein riesiger Gletscherberg am Hudson River erhebt, das Lego Hauptquartier, das die bunten Bausteine der Firma zitiert, oder das im Bau befindliche Two World Trade Center.

Die verrückteste Idee ist allerdings Copenhill: eine Müllverbrennungsanlage in Kopenhagen, deren Dach als Skipiste genutzt werden kann. Diesen Ansatz nennt er „hedonistic sustainability“ – also Nachhaltigkeit, bei der man etwas bekommt statt etwas aufzugeben. Dabei wollte Bjarke Ingels gar nicht Architektur studieren, sondern lieber Comics zeichnen. Die Lust am Spiel, der Fantasie und dem Erzählen ist geblieben. 2009 brachte er sein Manifest, ein Archicomic unter dem Titel „Yes is more“, heraus – eine Anspielung auf den Spruch „less is more“ des berühmten Architekten Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, die Ingels jugendlichen Eifer und Optimismus unterstreicht.

Seine Erklärvideos sind berühmt – etwa das, in dem er Architektur in Anlehnung an das Videogame Minecraft als „Worldcraft“ definiert – als mächtiges Werkzeug, mit dem man aus Träumen reale Gebäude werden lassen kann. Kurzum: „To turn fiction into fact. “

Bjarke Ingels became famous in the Noughties for his unusual residential complexes in Copenhagen. Since then, the Dane, born in 1974, has been designing spectacular buildings of all kinds all around the world with his office Bjarke Ingels Group, or BIG for short, founded in 2006. His best-known projects include the residential high-rise VIA 57 West in New York, which rises like a huge glacier mountain on the Hudson River; the Lego HQ, which picks up on the company's colourful building blocks; and the Two World Trade Centre, currently under construction. But the craziest idea is Copenhill: a waste incineration plant in Copenhagen whose roof can be used as a ski slope. He calls this approach "hedonistic sustainability", i.e. sustainability where you gain something instead of giving something up.

Bjarke Ingels didn't actually want to study architecture at all – he wanted to draw comics. His desire for play, fantasy and storytelling has remained. In 2009, he published his manifesto, an archicomic under the title "Yes is more" – an allusion to the "less is more" maxim of famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, which underscores Ingel's youthful zeal and optimism.

His explanatory videos – such as the one in which he defines architecture as "Worldcraft", in reference to the video game Minecraft – are famous as a powerful tool for turning dreams into real buildings. In short: "To turn fiction into fact."

In Alt-Bonames entdeckten Kay und Nathali Mack einen schlafenden Schatz.

Aus dem verschachtelten Haus an der Burgmauer machten der Architekt und die Modedesignerin ein modernes Domizil mit Persรถnlichkeit und Charme. Unser Team besuchte das Paar bei einer kleinen Landpartie in ihrem City-Cottage.

In the old part of the Bonames district in Frankfurt, Kay and Nathali Mack discovered a sleeping beauty. The architect and the fashion designer have turned the complex building next to the castle wall into a modern home with bags of personality and charm. Our team visited the couple on a small country outing to their city cottage.

„Das Haus von 1914 war so unfassbar hässlich und extrem verbaut über die letzten Jahrzehnte. Jede Struktur fehlte“, erinnert sich Kay Mack an die Zeit vor dem Umbau. Schon länger träumte die Familie von einem ländlichen Rückzugsort mit Garten und doch optimaler Verkehrsanbindung. Der Zufall half – stellte jedoch harte Bedingungen, denn das 500 Quadratmeter große Anwesen in Alt-Bonames war das sprichwörtliche hässliche Entlein, das niemand haben wollte. „Das war unsere Chance. Ich habe keine Angst vor alten Objekten und gezielt danach gesucht. Anfangs wurden wir belächelt, inzwischen sind viele auf der Suche nach solchen Kleinoden in Bonames, seitdem Immobilien dieser Größe in der Innenstadt fast nicht mehr zu bezahlen sind.“

"The house dating back to 1914 was so incredibly ugly and had had a lot added to it over the last few decades. It had no structure", said Kay Mack, recalling the time before the conversion. For ages, the family had dreamt of a rural retreat with a garden and excellent transport links. Coincidence played a helping hand – but demanded tough terms, because the 500 square metre property in the district of Alt-Bonames was the proverbial ugly duckling that nobody wanted. "That was our opportunity. I'm not afraid of old properties and I had specifically looked for one like that. At first, we were ridiculed, now a lot of people are looking for gems like ours in Bonames, since properties of this size in the city centre are almost unaffordable."

In Alt-Bonames ist das stolze Bauerndorf, das dieser Stadtteil im Norden Frankfurts einmal war, noch gut erkennbar, barocke Fachwerkhäuser und Scheunen schmiegen sich an Hofreiten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Im Mittelalter gab es Burg und Stadtmauer, römische Wege führten einst daran vorbei. „Unsere ganze Straße steht unter Denkmalschutz“, so Kay Mack, „nur unser Haus nicht, da es bereits mehrfach verändert wurde.“

In Alt-Bonames, there are still visible signs of the proud farming village, which was the origin of this district in the north of Frankfurt. Baroque half-timbered houses and barns nestle against the 19th-century farmstead. In the Middle Ages, there used to be a castle and city walls here; Roman roads once led past it. "Our entire street is just full of listed buildings," says Kay Mack, "just not our house, as it has already been altered several times."

MOODBOARDS Das strahlende Weiß von Buttermilch kommt uns in den Sinn. Jeder Raum ist darin eingetaucht, weiße Wände und Dielen reflektieren das Sonnenlicht und lassen die niedrigen Räume größer wirken. Alle Unzulänglichkeiten und Hindernisse, die das Haus seinen neuen Besitzern präsentierte, wandelten dies in Schokoladenseiten um. „Wir haben das heillos verbaute Haus vertikal geteilt, das war der Trick. Die Grundrisse wurden komplett geändert“, erklärt Kay Mack.

The bright white colour of buttermilk comes to our minds. Each room is immersed in it; white walls and floorboards reflect the sunlight, making the low rooms look larger. The new owners turned all the inadequacies and obstacles that the house presented to them into positive points. "We divided the hopelessly laid- out house vertically; that was the trick.

The floor plans have been completely altered," Kay Mack explains.

Fein rausgeputzt zeigt sich der ursprüngliche Charakter des Hauses, die Balken, die urige Holztreppe, die in den ersten Stock führt, und auch einige der alten Türen. Gegessen wird am langen Holztisch mit passender Bank.

Der Küchenschrank aus der Wirtschaftswunderzeit, von der Hausherrin mit weißer Farbe verjüngt, passt genau zum Stil zwischen French Vintage und skandinavischem Hygge-Look. Ans Herz gewachsene Flohmarktfunde bilden kleine Moodboards und werden ständig neu zusammengestellt. Lieblingsplatz der Macks ist die große überdachte Lounge-Terrasse, die bei fast jedem Wetter benutzt wird. Oft kommen Freunde auf ein Glas Wein vorbei und schwärmen von dem südlichen Lebensgefühl, das hier aufkommt.

The original character of the house, its beams, the quaint wooden staircase that leads to the first floor, along with some of the old doors have been lovingly restored. Meals are eaten at the long wooden table with matching bench.

The kitchen cabinet from the time of Germany's "economic miracle", rejuvenated by our hostess with a lick of white paint, fits exactly in with the style that is somewhere between French vintage and Scandinavian hygge.

Much-loved flea market finds form small mood boards that are constantly being rearranged. Mack's favourite spot is the large covered lounge terrace, which is used in almost any weather. Friends often drop by for a glass of wine and rave about the southern atmosphere that the place seems to generate.

HIDDEN GREEN „Containerweise schafften wir Schutt raus. Alte Lehmwände konnten wir erhalten, dazu alles fünffach mit Kalkfarbe streichen – eine unfassbare Arbeit.“ Ungewohntes Terrain für das gebürtige Nordlicht Kay Mack, dessen Frankfurter Büro sonst ultracoole und repräsentative Architekturen und Interior Design plant und umsetzt. „Bewusst halte ich hier meine Arbeit raus, das Haus ist mein gedankliches Nest“, sagt er.

"We filled entire skips with rubble. We were able to preserve the old clay walls, giving them five coats of whitewash – an incredible amount of work." This was unfamiliar territory for the native northerner Kay Mack, whose Frankfurt office normally plans and realises ultra-cool and prestigious architecture and interior design projects.

"I deliberately I keep my work out this place; the house is my mental sanctuary," he says.

Anders Nathali Mack, die sich ein Atelier mit Show-Room eingerichtet hat, wo sie luxuriöse Tücher und Schals entwirft. Sie ist es auch, die Geschick im zauberhaften Garten beweist. Über steile Steinstufen gelangt man auf eine Wildwiese wie aus dem Märchen, eingerahmt von Aprikosenbäumen, Gemüse und Quittenstämmen. Die Sonne meint es gut mit diesem Flecken. „Alles ist insektenfreundlich. Und aus der Backsteinscheune nebenan kommen Fledermäuse“, schwärmt sie.

Not so with Nathali Mack, who has set up a studio with a show room, where she designs luxury scarves and shawls. It is she who has the green fingers in their enchanting garden. Steep stone steps lead to a fairy-tale wild meadow, framed by apricot trees, vegetables and quince trees. The sun shines benignly on this spot of land. "Everything is insect friendly.

And there are bats in the brick barn next door," she enthuses.

Dass dieser Boden Geschichte hat, beweisen die Schießscharten der ehemaligen Stadtmauer. Von der Straße aus ahnt man nichts von diesem grünen Refugium, so ist es schon immer gewesen. Abschotten will sich das sympathische Paar nicht, lieber genießt es, was zu einem lebendigen „Dorf“ gehört, ein Schwatz mit den Nachbarn auf der Straße und das Vereinsleben: „Wir haben einen Naturschutzverein mitgegründet und Nathali ist jetzt im Vorstand des Heimat- und Geschichtsvereins Bonames. So kann man etwas tun und lernt enorm viele Leute kennen.“

The arrow slits of the old city wall prove this spot has a long history. From the road, you have no idea of this green hideaway – as has always been the case. The amiable couple don't want to isolate themselves, and actually enjoy what forms par t of a lively "village": a chat with the neighbours in the street and being par t of a local club. "We co -foun ded a conser vation association and Nathali is now on the board of the "homeland and histor y" club in Bonames. This is one way to get to know a lot of people very fast."

OLD BONES Hauskater Fritzi blinzelt kurz, stellt sich schlafend und lässt uns das charaktervolle Haus erkunden. Seine Bewohner haben eine Schwäche für Nestbau und Patina. Hier ist nichts von der Stange. Wir finden, das Haus ist ein Appell an alle, die meinen, ein verkorkstes Gemäuer lohne nicht. Eine Straßenecke weiter wird mit schwerem Gerät ein anderer „alter Knochen“ umgebaut. Da haben wohl wieder Städter ihr Nest gefunden.

Their cat Fritzi squints briefly, pretends to be asleep and lets us explore the characterful house, whose inhabitants have a weakness for nesting and patina. There is nothing off-the-shelf here. We think the house is a call to anyone who thinks a botched building isn't worth it. One street corner on, another old building is being rebuilt with heavy machinery.

Probably some more city dwellers who have finally found their haven.

Unser Herausgeber Robin Zabler war mit dem Frankfurter Experten für Fliesen Leo Parhomovski von Hermitage unterwegs, hat sich in den Messetrubel rund um die perfekte Inszenierung von Möbeln, Accessoires, Interieurs und Kunst gestürzt und liefert uns eine farbenfrohe Bilanz.

At Salone del Mobile in Milan, the world's most important exhibition of contemporary interior design, lushness and glamour are in demand. Our publisher Robin Zabler and Frankfurt-based tile expert Leo Parhomovski from Hermitage plunged into the hustle and bustle surrounding the perfect staging of furniture, accessories, interiors and art and presents us a colourful summary of it all.

HOME – SALONE DEL MOBILE MILANO

Jedes Jahr im Frühling herrscht in Mailand für eine Woche der Ausnahmezustand – denn dann ist Salone! Zur bekanntesten Möbelmesse der Welt, die in diesem Jahr zum 58. Mal und zusätzlich mit der Leuchtenplattform Euroluce stattfand, reisten über 380.000 Besucher aus 180 Nationen an. Zusätzlich zeigten viele Hersteller in der Stadt, auf dem sogenannten Fuorisalone, Neuheiten und Inszenierungen in Showrooms und an ausgefallenen Orten. Ich begleitete Leo Parhomovski, der die Messe so gut kennt wie seine Westentasche, um ein paar Einblicke aus der Business-Perspektive zu erhalten.

Every year in spring, a state of emergency reigns in Milan for a week – because that's when the world-famous Salone takes place! This year, more than 380,000 visitors from 180 nations made a pilgrimage to the world's most famous furniture exhibition, which was held for the 58th time – in parallel with the international lighting exhibition Euroluce. In addition, a lot of manufacturers in the city displayed the latest trends and presentations in their showrooms and at unusual locations, as part of the so-called Fuorisalone. I accompanied Leo Parhomovski, who knows the fair as well as his pocket, to get some insights from a business perspective.

Wer zum Salone nach Mailand kommt, will natürlich italienisches Design sehen. Einer der Aufsteiger der vergangenen Jahre ist die Marke Visionnaire, die auf erlesenen Luxus setzt. Fast 60 Monomarkenstores unterhält Visionnaire weltweit, der Umsatz liegt bei 50 Millionen Euro – und das innerhalb von 15 Jahren nach Gründung. Visionnaire ist nur ein Beispiel für viele italienische Möbelhersteller des Luxus-Segments wie B&B Italia, Baxter, Giorgetti, Fendi, Longhi, Minotti, Molteni oder Poltrona Frau, die längst den internationalen Markt im Blick haben. Das hat zur Folge, dass sich ganze Reisegrup pen durch die Stände schieben. Minotti hatte sich auf den großen Ansturm vorbereitet, indem sie die Möbel ins Glashaus gesetzt hatten, um das man herumlaufen konnte.

Naturally, anyone who comes to Milan for the Salone is there to see Italian design. One of the newcomers of recent years is the Visionnaire brand, which represents exquisite luxury. Visionnaire operates nearly 60 mono-brand stores around the world, enjoying a turnover of 50 million within just 15 years of its foundation. Visionnaire is just one example of many Italian furniture manufacturers in the luxury segment – such as B&B Italia, Baxter, Giorgetti, Fendi, Longhi, Minotti, Molteni or Poltrona Frau – who have long had their sights set on the international market. As a result, entire groups of tourists push their way through the stands. Minotti had prepared for the big onslaught by putting the furniture in a greenhouse one could run around in.

Nach vielen Jahren von minimalistischer Zurückhaltung setzen die Interior Designer auf Glamour und Üppigkeit. In puncto Material ist (weißer) Marmor State-of-the-Art, der oft als Tabletop eingesetzt wird. Glänzendes Messing löst den Trend von Kup fer ab, und dunkelbraune Hölzer wie Nuss oder Teak bringen wieder mehr Wärme ins Interieur. Neben der überschwänglichen Lust, Stile zu kombinieren, stehen Muster und intensive Farbkombinationen hoch im Kurs. Organische Formen ziehen in die Räume ein – selten zuvor hat man so viele kurvige und schlangenförmige Sofas gesehen. Selbst runde Betten gab es wie zuletzt in den 1970er Jahren.

After many years of minimalist restraint, interior designers are now setting store by glamour and opulence. In terms of material, (white) marble is state-ofthe-art, often used as a table top. Shiny brass has replaced the trend of copper, and dark brown woods, such as nutwood or teak, bring more warmth into interiors. On top of the exuberant desire to combine styles, patterns and intense colour combinations are also very popular. Organic shapes are moving into our rooms – rarely before have you seen so many curvy and serpentine sofas. There were even round beds – like those last seen in the 1970s.

So nimmt Knoll an der Seite des bekannten Architekten Rem Koolhaas das Bauhaus-Jubiläum ins Visier, indem sie den „Barcelona Chair“ von Ludwig Mies van der Rohe inszenieren. Hintergrund: Die amerikanische Marke hatte, nachdem durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg einige Bauhäusler in die USA immigrierten, die Gunst der Stunde ergriffen.

Und Cassina legt den „Capitol Complex Chair“ wieder auf, den Pierre Jeanneret für das Parlamentsgebäude im indischen Chandigarh von Le Corbusier entworfen hatte. Wirklich neue Konzepte sind darüber hinaus rar. Nur Kartell ist im 70sten Jahr seit Bestehen immer noch für eine Überraschung gut: Den „A.I. Chair“ hat Philippe Starck zusammen mit einer künstlichen Intelligenz gestaltet.

And Cassina is recreating the "Capitol Complex Chair" designed by Pierre Jeanneret for Le Corbusier's capitol complex in Chandigarh, India. Beyond that, really new concepts are scarce. Ohne Spaß geht bei Ossy Hoppe gar nichts. „Man sollte etwas tun, woran man glaubt“, so der bekannte Konzertveranstalter. „Und man sollte Spaß daran haben.“ An dieser Einstellung hält der 68-Jährige seit seinen Anfängen in der Musikbranche fest. Vielleicht blickt er gerade deshalb auf eine außergewöhnliche Karriere zurück. Von Deep Purple über Whitesnake bis hin zu Kiss – es gibt kaum einen Konzertmanager, der mit so vielen Rocklegenden in Verbindung gebracht wird wie Hoppe.

Without fun, nothing doing – that's the motto Ossy Hoppe lives by. "You should do something you believe in," the famous concert organiser says. "And you should have fun in the process." It's an attitude the 68-year-old has espoused since taking his first steps in the music industry. Maybe that's why he can look back on such an extraordinary career.

From Deep Purple to Kiss and Whitesnake – there's hardly any concert manager who has been associated with as many rock legends as Hoppe.

Doch letzten Endes war ihm das Ganze zu trocken, weshalb er die Uni schmiss und seine Brötchen etwa als Rausschmeißer verdiente.

Das war nicht nur der Beginn einer lebenslangen Freundschaft, sondern auch der einer spannenden Laufbahn im Showbiz. „Mit den Musikern, vor allem dem Sänger Ian Gillan, habe ich mich sofort gut verstanden“, sagt Hoppe. „Als sie einen Roadie suchten, war ich schnell mit an Bord und kurz darauf in den Vereinigten Staaten.“ Von da an tourte er mit der Band durch die ganze Welt.

From then on, he toured the world with the band.

Whitesnake. „Ich fungierte als Hans Dampf in allen Gassen, was bei so vielen verschiedenen Charakteren nicht einfach war.“ Seine zweite Station in England bildete der Job bei Jet Records. Firmengründer war der berühmt-berüchtigte Don Arden, Vater von Sharon Osbourne. Vor seiner Rückkehr nach Deutschland lernte Hoppe noch Mike Oldfield kennen und hat ihn eine Zeit lang gemanagt.

"I was a jack of all trades, which wasn't easy with so many diverse characters." In his second job in England he found himself working for Jet Records, whose founder was the notorious Don Arden, father of Sharon Osbourne. Before returning to Germany, Hoppe met Mike Oldfield and acted as his manager for a while.

Wieder in Frankfurt, stampfte er mit Shooter Promotions sein eigenes Unternehmen aus dem Boden. Seine Spezialität: Hardrock. „Das Genre war damals noch ein bisschen verpönt“, so Hoppe. Doch davon habe er sich nicht stören lassen und Shooter Promotions zur Hardrock-Agentur schlechthin gemacht. Bands wie Bon Jovi, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Police und Whitesnake gehörten zum Portfolio.

Back in Frankfurt, he conjured up his own business out of thin air: Shooter Promotions. Its speciality? Hard rock. "The genre was still a bit frowned upon back in those days," Hoppe says. But he didn't let that bother him and turned Shooter Promotions into a hard rock agency. Bands such as Bon Jovi, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Police and Whitesnake all formed part of its portfolio.

Sein nächstes – und bislang letztes – Baby heißt Wizard Promotions. Größter Coup der 2004 gegründeten Agentur sind die Konzerte der Böhsen Onkelz auf dem Hockenheimring. Zuvor hatte Hoppe es geschafft, die seit Jahren getrennte Band zu einem Comeback zu überreden. Dass sie 2015 an zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Wochenenden vier Konzerte auf einem jeweils ausverkauften Hockenheimring spielen konnten, ist auch der Werbestrategie von Oliver Hoppe zu verdanken. 2018 hat „The Wizard of Os“ die Geschäftsleitung ganz an den Sohn übergeben, während er selbst noch als Berater fungiert. Vom Know-how seines Nachfolgers ist er begeistert: „Bei mir war alles Learning

His next – and so far last – baby is Wizard Promotions. The biggest hit of the agency, founded in 2004, has been the concerts of German band Böhse Onkelz at the Hockenheimring. Previously, Hoppe had managed to persuade the band, which had split up years before, to make a comeback. The fact that they were able to play four sold-out concerts at the Hockenheimring on two consecutive weekends in 2015 is also thanks to Oliver Hoppe's advertising strategy. In 2018, "The Wizard of Os" handed the management of his agency over to his son, but he still acts as a consultant. He is enthusiastic about his successor's know-how: "With me, I had to learn everything on the job. Oliver, on the other hand, has had a great education and can, therefore, tackle a lot of things differently."

Ruhestand ist übrigens ein Wort, das Hoppe lieber nicht benutzt. Obwohl er die Zeit, die er und Ehefrau Barbara oft in Frankreich verbringen, sehr genießt. Trotzdem kann er, als altes Zirkuskind, nicht ganz ohne das Vagabundenleben. Überhaupt gibt es für ihn zwischen dem Zirkus und dem Musik-Business nur einen echten Unterschied: „Die Tiere im Zirkus sind nicht so gefährlich.“

By the way, retirement is a word that Hoppe prefers to avoid, even though he greatly enjoys the time he and wife Barbara spend in France. Nevertheless, as a former circus child, he can't quite give up the vagabond life. In general, there is only one real difference between the circus and the music business: "The animals in the circus aren't so dangerous."

Thomas Feda schmunzelt: „Als ich vor bald 20 Jahren von Franken nach Frankfurt ging, gab mir mein Schwiegervater Pfefferspray mit, zu meiner Sicherheit. Der Ruf Frankfurts war damals nicht der beste.“ Gebraucht habe er das Spray nie. Selbst im raueren Bahnhofsviertel nicht, wo sein Büro ist.

The midday sun, honking car horns and the normal hustle and bustle between Zeil and Eschenheimer Tor. Outside, a blue flashing light passes by. Thomas Feda smiles: "When I went from Franken to Frankfurt almost 20 years ago, my father-in-law gave me some pepper spray for my personal safety. Frankfurt's reputation wasn't the best then." He never used the spray. Not even in the fairly rough district around the station, where his office is.

CITY OF HOTELS Thomas Feda kann gut reden. Und man hört ihm gern zu, denn er baut Vertrauen auf. Etwas, das man in seinem Job besonders braucht. Schnell sind wir im urbanen Idyll des Palaishofs entflammt von den Bildern und Visionen des Chef-Touristikers: „In den nächsten drei Jahren kommen weitere 19 Hotels nach Frankfurt, meist Boutique- und Designhotels. Es geht etwas weg von der Kettenhotellerie. Die Neuzugänge bedeuten, dass bis zu 6.000 Zimmer gefüllt werden müssen.“

Very quickly we find ourselves in the urban idyll of the Palaishof, inflamed by the images and visions of the head tourism honcho: "In the next three years, another 19 hotels will be coming to Frankfurt, mostly boutique and designer hotels. The trend is moving away from chain hotels. The new additions mean that up to 6,000 rooms will need to be filled."

Naturally, the reconstructed Altstadt (the old part of town destroyed during the war), the museum embankment, and the culture attract visitors. Also important are renowned large conferences with thousands of participants. "From the current total of 10.1m overnight stays a year, Frankfurt will have to approach the figure of 15m in the next five to ten years," Feda states. A lot has to be done to achieve that.

Also in his own country. "The German market holds a lot of potential for Frankfurt. We want to become even more attractive for city-break tourists." Even though the city's crime statistics regularly mar its image, German tourists have become fond of the metropolis. And that they are coming in increasing numbers is also backed up by the statistics.

Natürlich locke die neue Altstadt, das Museumsufer, die Kultur. Wichtig seien aber auch renommierte Großkongresse mit tausenden Teilnehmern. „Von jetzt 10,1 Millionen Übernachtungen jährlich muss sich Frankfurt in den kommenden fünf bis zehn Jahren der Zahl 15 Millionen nähern“, weiß Feda. Dafür ist einiges zu tun. Auch im eigenen Land. „Der deutsche Markt birgt viel Potential für Frankfurt. Wir wollen für Städtetouristen noch attraktiver werden.“ Zwar mag die Kriminalstatistik der Stadt den einen oder anderen zukünftigen Gast beeinflussen, doch allgemein lässt sich beobachten, dass die Touristen die Metropole liebgewonnen haben. Und es kommen immer mehr, auch das beweisen die Statistiken.

TWO FACES Zander mit jungem Spinat, „bitte ohne Kartoffeln“. Der, der den ganzen Globus bereist, um Frankfurt und die Region Rhein-Main für Reiseanbieter und Kongressveranstalter schmackhaft zu machen und dabei auch mal in landestypische Kuriositäten wie „schwarze Käfer in Gelee“ beißen muss, mag es kulinarisch „nicht zu kompliziert“. Am liebsten esse er Karpfen. Thomas Feda sagt das mit fränkischer Heimatmelodie und Bodenständigkeit.

Und immer mit mindestens zehn Familien aus unserem Dorf. In den Pfingstferien nur mit den Eltern nach Jesolo. Auch jedes Jahr.“ Der junge Mann aus Franken ging eigene Urlaubswege, inzwischen kennt er die Welt.

Flashback. Thomas Feda is a teenager – and a rebel. Never again Riccione. "We went there in the summer holidays for 16 years. Every year. And always with at least 10 families from our village. In the spring holidays, with just my parents to Jesolo. Every year, too." The young man from Franconia then made his own holiday plans and now he's seen the world.

Die Skyline könnte erlebbarer sein – das „Wolkenkratzerfestival“ war eine der erfolgreichsten Veranstaltungen überhaupt. Wenn Touristen die Chance hätten, wie in New York auf einigen Hochhäusern zu stehen, wäre das eine fantastische Sache.

Solche Plattformen müssten im Vorfeld bei der Bebauungsplanung berücksichtigt werden. Ich träume außerdem von einem festen Musical-Haus.“

What's next, Mr Feda? "E- scooters! I am ver y keen on them! As I travel a lot in the city, a company scooter would be great." Any wishes? The skyline could be more accessible: the "Skyscraper Festi val" was one of the most successful events ever. "If tourists had the chance to stand on some skyscra pers like in New York, that'd be phantastic. Such platforms would have to be considered in advance in the planning stage. I also dream of a permanent building for musicals."

Könnte es da in Zukunft nicht eng werden auf den Bürgersteigen bei den angepeilten Superlativen? „Wir brauchen starke Partner aus der Region, um nicht alles geballt in Frankfurt zu haben.“ Ökonomisch denken, ökonomisch lenken, heißt das. Kurz, die Touristen weglocken von den Hotspots und die „zweite Reihe“ attraktiver machen. Andere europäische Metropolen versuchen es schon so.

Would the streets not get a bit full near these marvellous projects should they come to fruition? "We need strong regional partners, so as not to have everything concentrated in Frankfurt." Mal angenommen, Frankfurt bräuchte eine neue Oper – ob nur als Opern- oder auch als Schauspielhaus sei dahingestellt. Würde man sich an bescheidenen Zweckbauten orientieren oder eher an spektakulären Kulturdenkmalen wie der Hamburger Elphi oder dem Sydney Opera House? Darf es in einer Metropole, die sich mit Brexit-London misst, keine „monumentalen“ Bauwerke geben neben dem Campus Westend, der Festhalle und der Alten Oper? Ein Monument muss ja nicht gleich monströs und kostspielig sein.

Gourmets in Frankfurt kennen ihn noch aus seiner Zeit an der Seite von Mario Lohninger im Micro und Silk: Oliver Lange, besser bekannt als Ollysan. Den ehrvollen Spitznamen erhielt der damals noch blutjunge Koch, der beim berühmten SushiChef des Nobu Kazu Hashimoto gelernt hat, übrigens für sein Geschick, die Aromenund Texturenvielfalt der japanischen Küche in moderne internationale Kreationen einfließen zu lassen. Dies tut er nun seit vier Jahren als Executive Chef in einem der angesagtesten Restaurants in New York: dem Zuma NYC.

Gourmets in Frankfurt know him from the time spent at the side of Austrian gastronome Mario Lohninger in his restaurants "Micro" and "Silk": Oliver Lange, the German chef who is maybe better known as Ollysan.

This honourable nickname was given to the then very young chef, who learned from the famous NOBU chef Kazu Hashimoto – for Lange's skill in integrating the flavours and textural diversity of Japanese cuisine and coming up with modern international creations. Ollysan has been doing this now for four years, in his role as the Executive Chef in one of New York's trendiest restaurants: the Zuma in New York City.

Wie hat es dich dorthin verschlagen?

Ich war vorher Küchenchef im Zuma London, und als einer unser Gründer, Rainer Becker, mir die Stelle in New York angeboten hatte, war die Entscheidung schnell getroffen.

How did you end up in New York?

I used to be a chef at Zuma in London, and when one of our founders, Rainer Becker, offered me the job in New York, I didn't take me long to make my decision.

Was machst du dort?

Seit 2017 habe ich die Stelle als Corporate Executive Chef angenommen und überschaue nun alle unsere Restaurants in den Vereinigten Staaten. Ich bin also ständig auf Tour zwischen all unseren Locations, und es macht mir sehr viel Spaß, mit solch einem großen Team zu arbeiten. Zuma ist nicht nur meine Arbeit, es ist längst zu meiner Familie geworden.

What do you do over there?

In 2017 I accepted the position of Corporate Executive Chef and now I'm responsible for keeping an eye on all our restaurants across the United States. That means that I am constantly travelling between all our locations, and I really enjoy working with such a large team. Zuma isn't just my job; it has long since become my family.

Dann fühlst du dich also zu Hause?

Das kann man wohl so sagen. Es hatte einige Zeit gedauert, sich an die neue Kultur und Umgebung anzupassen, aber mittlerweile genieße ich meine Zeit hier sehr. Meine Frau ist ursprünglich aus den USA, und ich fühle mich überall dort zu Hause, wo wir zusammen sein können.

So you feel at home over there?

You could say that. It took me some time to adapt to the new culture and environment, but, in the meantime, I can say that I'm enjoying my time here a lot.

My wife is originally from the US, and I feel at home wherever we can be together.

Und deine Frankfurter Wurzeln? Wo liegen die?

Ich bin gebürtiger Berliner, bin aber 2004 nach Frankfurt gezogen und habe dort acht Jahre verbracht. Mit kurzer Unterbrechung: Ich war zwischendrin ein Jahr lang in München und hatte dort mein eigenes Restaurant betrieben.

And what about your Frankfurt roots? Where are they?

I was born in Berlin, but I moved to Frankfurt in 2004 and spent eight years there. With a brief interruption, though: I spent a year of my life in Munich, where I ran my own restaurant. Back in those days, I had moved

Ich bin damals von Berlin nach Frankfurt gezogen, um für Mario Lohninger in seinen beiden Restaurants im legendären Cocoon Club von Sven Väth zu arbeiten. Gewohnt habe ich damals in Sachsenhausen und habe während der Zeit eine Menge toller Menschen kennen gelernt.

Auch nach dem Cocoon Club habe ich von allen meinen Frankfurter Freunden einen super Support erlebt – bis heute. Und viele der festen Freundschaften aus meinen Frankfurter Jahren pflege ich auch bis heute.

Was fehlt dir aus der alten Heimat?

Gute deutsche Küche… und das Essen meiner Mutter fehlt mir am meisten.

Bist du noch ab und an hier?

Ich versuche, so oft es geht nach Deutschland zu reisen, aber das ist leider nicht immer so einfach. Ich verbringe gerne meine freie Zeit mit der Familie und Freunden. Das kann im Schwarzwald bei meinen Großeltern sein oder auch in Frankfurt, Berlin und München. Ich reise am liebsten mit meiner Frau zusammen, und wir haben mittlerweile viele schöne Erinnerungen aus Deutschland gesammelt.

from Berlin to Frankfurt to work for Mario Lohninger in his two restaurants in the legendary Cocoon club run by Sven Väth until it closed in 2012. I was living in Sachsenhausen at that time and during that period, I was lucky to meet lot of great people. Even after the Cocoon club closed, I got a lot of great support from all my friends in Frankfurt – even until today. And I still make the effort to keep a lot of the solid friendships that developed in my Frankfurt years going.

What do you miss from your old home country?

Good German food... and my mum's cooking is what I miss the most.

Do you still visit Germany from time to time?

I try to travel to Germany as often as I possibly can, but that's not always so easy. I like spending my free time with family and friends – and that could be in the Black Forest with my grandparents or even in Frankfurt, Berlin and Munich.

I like to travel with my wife, and we have garnered a lot of beautiful memories from our visits to Germany.

Wie sieht’s mit der Frankfurter Küche aus? Hast du Lieblingsspeisen?

Ich esse sehr gerne eine gut gemachte Grüne Soße. Aber eigentlich macht mir fast alles Spaß, wenn ich in guter Gesellschaft bin. Da ich nicht so oft in den Genuss komme, freue ich mich jedes Mal umso mehr, wenn ich nach Frankfurt komme und gutbürgerlich essen gehen kann.

And what about the cuisine of Frankfurt? Do you have any favourite dishes?

I like to eat a well-made “green sauce”. But in actual fact, I can enjoy almost everything so long as I am in good company. Since I don't get to enjoy it so often, I'm always delighted when I can come to Frankfurt and can eat good food.

Was machst du noch außer zu kochen?

Ich treibe gerne und viel Sport, wenn die Zeit es zulässt.

Quality time mit meiner Frau ist mir aber am wichtigsten.

Wir beide reisen gerne und lernen neue Kulturen und Küchen kennen. Außerhalb der Arbeit kochen wir viel zu Hause. Megan ist eine super Hobbyköchin und kann zudem auch sehr lecker backen – das ist wiederum einer der Gründe, warum ich immer viel Sport treibe.

What else do you do besides cook?

Time permitting, I like to do sport – and a lot of sport at that. Spending quality time with my wife is the most important thing to me. We both like to travel and get to know all about new cultures and cuisines. Outside working hours, we do cook a lot at home, too. Megan is a great amateur cook and can also bake very delicious cakes – which is one of the reasons why I always do a lot of sport.

Gibt es irgendwelche spannenden neuen Projekte?

Momentan arbeiten wir an der Neueröffnung in Boston.

Ich habe viel Gefallen an der Stadt gefunden und freue mich sehr auf unser neues Restaurant, welches im Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton gelegen sein wird. Bei diesem Projekt hat sich Rainer Becker für eine komplett offene Küche entschieden. In allen anderen Zuma-Restaurants haben wir einen Sushi Counter und den Robata Grill, wo die Gäste den Köchen bei der Arbeit zusehen können. In Boston wird zudem auch die Hauptküche ein offener Teil des Restaurants sein. Die positive Energie aus der Küche wird für eine super Stimmung sorgen.

Do you have any exciting new projects currently in the pipeline?

At the moment, we are working on the new opening in Boston. I have come to really like the city and I am looking forward to our new restaurant, which will be located at the Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton. With this project, Rainer Becker has opted for a completely open kitchen. In all other Zuma restaurants, we have a sushi counter and the Robata Grill, where guests can sit and watch the chefs at work. In Boston, though, the main kitchen will also be an open part of the restaurant. The positive energy emanating from the kitchen will make for a great atmosphere.

Patrick Bittner has been cooking in his restaurant Français for nigh on 20 years. In the year 2000, he left the cooking legend and three-star chef that is Dieter Müller to come to the Main area and work at the Grand Hotel Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof. Eight years later, the former "Shooting Star of the Year" was awarded a prized Michelin star, which he has succeeded in holding on to for 11 years.

In dem 1876 eröffneten Traditionshaus am Kaiserplatz befindet sich ein Restaurant, das ein stilles Dasein fristet, oft verkannt wird und, noch viel gewichtiger; getrost als das schönste Missverständnis der Stadt bezeichnet werden darf…

We walk from the Goetheplatz, a good 300 metres up the Kaiserstrasse, and then we find ourselves standing in front of one of the city's most magnificent hotels: the Frankfurter Hof. The traditional building on Kaiserplatz, opened in 1876, houses a restaurant that enjoys a quiet existence, is often misjudged and, even more importantly, can safely be described as the most beautiful misunderstanding of the city...

Surprise, Surprise!

Patrick Bittner ist einer der Stillen im Zirkus der Sterneköche, sein asketisches Aussehen kommt nicht von ungefähr.

Der gelernte Küchenmeister ist Triathlet und beschäftigt sich privat mit der ayurvedischen Küche, die sich auch in seinen Gerichten wiederfindet. Und damit sind wir auch schon bei dem angesprochenen Missverständnis: Wer ins Français möchte, schreitet zunächst durch die prunkvolle Lobby des traditionsreichen Luxushotels. Gedämpfte Stimmung, die Einrichtung des Hauses ist klassisch gehalten – eben so, wie man es sich in einem französischen Sternerestaurant vorstellt…

Among the Michelin star chefs and the hustle and bustle surrounding them, Patrick Bittner is one of the quite ones and his ascetic appearance is no coincidence. The trained chef is a triathlete and is privately interested in Ayurvedic cuisine, which is also reflected in his dishes. And so we have already come to the aforementioned misunderstanding: anyone wanting to dine at Français first has to stride through the magnificent lobby of the traditional luxury hotel. A muted atmosphere, the decor of is classic – just as you would imagine it to be in a French Michelin-starred restaurant...

Die Überraschung aber wartet im Restaurant, genauer gesagt: auf der Karte. Patrick Bittner kocht eine äußerst moderne Interpretation der klassischen französischen Küche.

Seine Gerichte sind sehr leicht, bis auf das Brot – das er am liebsten vom Tisch verbannen würde – kommen seine Kreationen nahezu ohne Kohlenhydrate aus. Nur zur Elsässer Gänseleber-Paté reicht er eine selbstgebackene Dillbrioche.

The surprise awaits you in the restaurant, or more accurately, on the menu. Patrick Bittner cooks a very modern interpretation of classic French cuisine. His dishes are very light, apart from the bread – which he'd prefer to rather banish from the table – his creations get by with almost no carbohydrates. Only for the Alsatian goose liver pate does he offer a homemade dill brioche

Asia meets Europe Bittner versteht es, der als schwer geltenden französischen Küche nicht nur eine unglaubliche Leichtigkeit zu verleihen, er führt sie sogar weiter in die Welt hinaus und kombiniert sie mit indischen und asiatischen Komponenten. Den sous vide gegarten Ora King Lachs etwa versieht er mit Kräutersaitlingen und Buchenpilzen von Edelpilzzüchter Kroll aus Offenbach, begleitet von einem Soja-Dashi. Letztere Komponente gilt als die vielleicht wichtigste Zutat in der japanischen Küche. Dashi ist eine leichte Brühe aus Kombu, einer speziellen Algenart und Bonitoflocken, und sehr umami-lastig – vereinfacht gesagt: natürliches Glutamat.

Bittner knows how to give not only unbelievable lightness to the reputedly difficult French cuisine, but even takes it further out into the big, wide world, combining it with Indian and Asian components. The Ora King salmon he cooks sous vide, for example, is accompanied by king oyster mushrooms and shimeji mushrooms from first-rate mushroom grower Kroll from Offenbach, and accompanied by a dashi soy sauce. The latter is regarded as perhaps the most important ingredient in Japanese cuisine. Dashi is a light broth of kombu, a special type of algae and bonito flakes, and very umami-heavy. Put simply: natural glutamate.

Although the perfect chicken takes centre stage with Patrick Bittner, he accompanies it with a lentil dal that is of equal calibre. Here, for the first time, the chef's Indian side, which he regularly expands on his travels when he gathers new impressions, makes an appearance. The man from the Munsterland is no cross-border worker, but he manages to give his dishes a perfect harmony and, it is important to mention, he can skilfully play with acidic flavours!

Michael Wanhoff, gebürtiger Königsteiner und glühender Frankfurt-Liebhaber, studierte zunächst Rechts- und Betriebswirtschaft, bevor er der Familientradition seines Vaters (Chefredakteur „Uhren, Juwelen, Schmuck“ und Bruders (u.a. Die Welt) folgte. Nach Jahren in einer Redaktion wechselte er schließlich die Seiten und ist seitdem als Pressesprecher in Industrie, Politik und Entertainment tätig. Seine Oma, eine schlesische Köchin, war es, die ihn schon früh das Kochen lehrte. Sein Beruf und seine Leidenschaft trafen schließlich aufeinander. Ob als Pressechef des Jamie Oliver Dinners oder als PR-Manager für Spitzen- und Sterneköche: Michael Wanhoff kennt die Branche, viele Hintergründe und blickt gerne über den Tellerrand hinaus und in die Kochtöpfe hinein.

Michael Wanhoff, a native of Königstein and passionate Frankfurt fan, first studied law and business before following the family tradition of his father (editor-in-chief of Uhren Juwelen Schmuck) and brother (Die Welt, among others). After years in an editorial office, he finally changed sides and has since worked as a press officer in industry, politics and entertainment. His grandmother, a Silesian cook, was the one who taught him how to cook early on in his life. His profession and passion finally came together.

Whether as the press officer of Jamie Oliver Dinners or as a PR manager for top and star chefs, Michael Wanhoff knows the industry, many backgrounds and likes looking outside the box and into the cooking pots.

Das Français kommt derart frisch, leicht und modern daher, dass es ein junges, aufgeschlossenes Publikum verdient. Patrick Bittner und sein Sous-Chef Johannes Goll (ebenfalls ein Schüler von Dieter Müller) setzen bewusst auf die zeitgemäße Verjüngung von Klassikern und revolutionär moderne Kreationen und beweisen mit ihrer Karte, dass französische Haute Cuisine nicht nur leicht sein, sondern eben auch über den Tellerrand hinausblicken kann.

Das Ganze funktioniert übrigens auch, weil mit Sommelier Sebastian Höpfner ein Meister seines Fachs am Werk ist.

Seine Empfehlung zum Ora King-Lachs etwa, ein 2013er Riesling Steinmassel von Fred Loimer aus dem österreichischen Kamptal, könnte nicht besser sein. Unser Fazit: Es lebe die Leichtigkeit! Vive le Français!

The Français is so fresh, light and modern, it deserves a young and open-minded clientele. Patrick Bittner and his sous chef Johannes Goll (also a pupil of Dieter Müller) deliberately focus on the contempo rary rejuvenation of classics and revolutionary modern creations, proving, with their menu, that French haute cuisine is not only easy, but can also benefit from some lateral thinking. Incidentally, this all works because sommelier Sebastian Höpfner is also a master of his craft. His recommendation for the Ora King salmon, a 2013 Riesling Steinmassel from Fred Loimer from the Austrian Kamptal, couldn't be better. Our conclusion? Vive la légèreté! Vive le Français!

Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann are actually graphic designers. Their clients include renowned brands from Hermès to Microsoft as well as numerous international magazines. But instead of keyboard and computer mouse, the duo named Zim&Zou prefers to use paper, scissors and glue. The result: the most spectacular handicrafts we have ever seen! Thibault, alias Zim, gives us some exciting insights into his colourful world.

Hat jeder von euch seine eigene Rolle?

Does each of you have her/his own role?

Ja, wir haben einen Produktionsprozess mit aufgeteilten Rollen. Bei der Ideenfindung allerdings machen wir alles gemeinsam. Jede Design-Entscheidung muss von beiden abgesegnet werden. In der Produktion selbst ist Zou verantwortlich fürs Kleben und Zusammensetzen, ich hingegen bin zuständig fürs Zeichnen der Muster und Dekorationen sowie fürs Schneiden. Ich muss zugeben, wir kennen uns sehr gut, schließlich arbeiten wir schon fast zehn Jahre zusammen… Ich könnte die rechte Seite einer Installation aufstellen und Zou die linke Seite, und da wäre keinerlei Unterschied.

Yes, we do have a production process where we both have different roles. But when talking about the idea, we’re doing everything together. Every design decision has to be agreed by both of us. Once production has started, Zou is in charge of gluing and assembling and I'm more about drawing the patterns and decorations, and cutting. I’ve got to admit that we know each other very well considering we’re working together for almost 10 years... I could set up the right side of an installation, and Zou the left side, there wouldn’t be any difference!

Wie kommt es, dass ihr euch für diesen analogen Weg des Kreierens entschieden habt?

Wir haben beide eine Ausbildung in Grafikdesign abgeschlossen, bei der man lernt, am Computer zu entwerfen und Konzepte zu erstellen. Dennoch waren wir stets Bastelkinder, und so haben wir in unserer Freizeit immer mit echten Materialien gespielt. Wir hatten Spaß am Greifbaren. So etwas haben wir bei der Arbeit mit Pixeln nie im gleichen Maße verspürt. Als wir dann unser erstes Papierprojekt im Internet veröffentlichten, bekamen wir viel positives Feedback… und den ersten Kundenauftrag. Ab dem Moment beschlossen wir, uns auf Papierinstallationen zu fokussieren.

How is it that you have chosen this analogue path of creation?

We both had a graphic design education, and in that kind of studies you’re learning to master computer design and conceptualization. But we’ve always been crafty kids, so we started to play with real materials during our spare time. We had a lot of fun playing with tangible materials. That’s personal, but we never felt anything close while working with pixels. When we published our first paper project on the Internet we had a lot of positive feedbacks… and a first commission for a client! Since this moment, we decided to focus on paper installations.

Benutzt ihr noch weitere Materialien?

Ja, wir probieren immer wieder andere Materialien als Papier aus. Wir haben schon Arbeiten aus Leder gefertigt, haben es mit Modelliermasse versucht sowie mit Holz und haben auch schon Buchstaben aus Faden hergestellt…

Was wir aber am Papier so schätzen ist seine Fragilität, es verlangt so viel Aufmerksamkeit und Respekt. Zudem ist es sehr vielseitig, weil es in so vielen unterschiedlichen Grammaturen, Farben, Texturen etc. erhältlich ist.

Do you use any other materials?

Yes, we're trying to use other materials than just paper. We already did some leather works, we gave a try to modeling paste, we tried to work with wood also, we’ve made letters using thread.... But what we like with paper is its fragility, it requires a lot of attention and respect. Plus, it’s very versatile since you can find it under a lot of different weights, colors, textures, etc.

Habt ihr ein Traumprojekt?

Unser Traum wäre es, eine begehbare Papierwelt zu schaffen, etwas wirklich Großes. Wir würden gerne eine Installation machen, durch die die Menschen durchlaufen können, völlig losgelöst von der Realität. Wie ein riesiges Papierhaus oder ein ganzer Wald. Das wäre verrückt!

Do you have a dream project?

Our dream project would be to create an immersive paper world, something really big. We’d love to create an installation where people could walk in, totally disconnected from reality. Like a huge paper house or a whole forest. This would be so crazy!

Woher bekommt ihr eure Inspirationen?

Von überall her und von allem. Aber am meisten aus der Natur, denke ich. Wir finden auch Inspirationen in Büchern, Filmen (wir lieben die Animationsfilme von Miyazaki) oder Architektur.

Where do you get your inspirations from?

From everywhere and everything! But mostly nature I think. We can also find our inspiration in books, movies (we love animation movies like Miyazaki) and architecture.

Tristan, es ist schon beachtlich, wenn eine Veranstaltung erfolgreich 25 Jahre fortgeführt wurde.

Nimmt die IG Galerien dies zum Anlass, Bilanz zu ziehen?

Tristan, when an event has been going on very successfully for 25 years, that's something quite remarkable. Is the IG Galerien seizing this as an opportunity to reflect and take stock?

Ganz bestimmt ist dieses Datum ein kleiner Meilenstein, gerade hinsichtlich eines sich so rasch wandelnden, oftmals auch kurzlebigen und von vielerlei Feinheiten abhängigen Metiers. Denn als sich 1994 38 Galerien zusammenschlossen, um anlässlich der 1200-Jahr-Feier Frankfurts den ersten Saisonstart zu inszenieren, war es tatsächlich das erste Gallery Weekend seiner Zeit. Stuttgart, Köln, Berlin und andere folgten erst Jahre später.

Zu diesem Jubiläum des Frankfurter Saisonstarts haben wir im Archiv gestöbert und zeichnen diese Erfolgsgeschichte nach. In einer kuratierten Ausstellung lassen wir die Besucher teilhaben an der inhaltlichen und visuellen Entwicklung der von der 10 Jahre zuvor gegründeten Interessengemeinschaft der Frankfurter Galerien initiierten Veranstaltung. Eine Zeitreise durch drei Jahrzehnte Kunstschaffen in Frankfurt macht neugierig!

This date is certainly a small milestone, especially in view of such a rapidly changing metier, one that is often also short-lived and dependent on many fine points.

When 38 galleries came together in 1984 to stage the first season launch on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of Frankfurt, it was indeed the first gallery weekend of its time. Stuttgart, Cologne, Berlin and other cities didn't follow suit until years later. For this anniversary of the start of the season in Frankfurt, we've been rummaging through the archive and have retraced this success story. In a curated exhibition, we let the visitors get involved in the content and visual development of the event that was initiated by the interest group of the Frankfurt galleries that had been founded a decade earlier. A journey through three decades of art in Frankfurt awakens your curiosity!

Ein umfangreiches Rahmenprogramm sowie ein reichhaltiges Vermittlungsangebot in Form von geführten Rundgängen ermöglichen eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der Kunst!

Tristan, gemeinsam mit der Agentur Urban Media Project und dem Frankfurter Sammler und Eventproduzenten Tyrown Vincent denkst Du über das Potenzial des Wochenendes nach. Welchen Ideen geht ihr im Moment nach?

Tristan, along with the agency Urban Media Project and the Frankfurt collector and event producer Tyrown Vincent, you're thinking about the potential of the weekend. What ideas are you pursuing the moment?

Natürlich schaut man auch über den lokalen Tellerrand hinaus und analysiert inhaltlich vergleichbare Konzepte wie die Galeriefestivals in Brüssel, Berlin, London oder Amsterdam, die sich erfolgreich etablieren konnten und enorme Strahlkraft besitzen. Deshalb sind wir überzeugt davon, dass gerade Frankfurt prädestiniert dafür ist, mit aktuell über 50 inhabergeführten Galerien, auf höchstem Niveau agierenden Museen, Ateliers, renommierten Sammlungen, der Städelschule für Bildende Künste, aber auch durch eine lebendige Off-Szene sowohl ein wichtiger Dreh- und Angelpunkt zu sein als auch im internationalen Kunstmarkt eine Instanz darzustellen.

Unsere Idee ist es daher, diese unterschiedlichen Bausteine zu bündeln, um den heterogenen Zielgruppen das gesamte Spektrum der zeitgenössischen Kunst unserer Stadt aufzeigen zu können. Durch die beeindruckende Vielfalt eines Frankfurt-spezifischen Konzepts kann die hiesige Kunstwelt neu und vielseitig erlebbar gemacht werden.

Naturally, you also think outside the local box and analyse concepts that are comparable in terms of content, such as the gallery festivals in Brussels, Berlin, London or Amsterdam, which were all able to establish themselves successfully and which have enormous appeal.

This is why we're convinced that Frankfurt in particular is predestined to be an important hub as it currently has more than 50 owner-managed galleries, museums that operate at the highest level, studios, renowned collections, the Städelschule academy of fine arts, but also a lively fringe art scene and it's an authority on the international art market. Our idea is, therefore, to combine these different building blocks in order to be able to show the assorted target groups the entire spectrum of contemporary art in our city. Due to the impressive diversity of a Frankfurt-specific concept, the local art world can now be experienced in a new and versatile way.

What will the season start of the future look like?

Das Galerienwochenende wird noch viel mehr in das städtische Gefüge eingebunden sein, um sowohl in der Außenwirkung als auch in der Kernarbeit Substanz zu haben. Eine frische, zeitgemäße Bündelung sämtlicher Potenziale ist hierfür Grundlage, um die internationale Wahrnehmung zu einem Kunst- und Lifestyle-Ort mit eigenen, urbanen Qualitäten zu kreieren. Die Frankfurter Galerien werden hier sicherlich, wie schon vor 25 Jahren, Pioniergeist zeigen, um sich als elementarer Bestandteil der Kulturarbeit zu positionieren.

The gallery weekend will be incorporated in the urban fabric much more than before in order to have substance both in its external effect and in its core work. A fresh, contemporary bundling of all the potentials forms the basis for creating the international perception of an art and lifestyle location with its own urban qualities.

The galleries in Frankfurt will certainly demonstrate a pioneering spirit here – just like they did 25 years ago – in order to position themselves as an elementary component of cultural work.

THE WORLD MUSICIAN ARA MALIKIAN

Im Grunde reicht es, ihn auf seiner Violine spielen zu hören, um in Bewunderung zu verfallen.

Lauscht man dann aber auch noch seinen Erzählungen, wird klar, dass Ara Malikian nicht nur ein Ausnahmemusiker ist, sondern einer jener Menschen, die aus der Achtsamkeit und Demut, welche ihnen das Schicksal beschert hat, eine wunderbare Botschaft ableiten: dass wir alle gleich sind im Streben nach Glück, Liebe, Frieden und Freiheit. Und dass die Musik phantastische Möglichkeiten bietet, dies zu verdeutlichen.

Just hearing him play his violin is enough to make you gaze at him in wonder. But then, when you listen to his stories, it very quickly becomes clear that Ara Malikian is not merely an exceptional musician, but that he's one of those people who develop a wonderful message from the mindfulness and humility that fate has endowed them with: namely that we are all in pursuit of happiness, love, peace and freedom. And that music offers some fantastic possibilities to illustrate this truth.

Wir treffen Ara während eines Tour-Stopps in Frankfurt. Am Vorabend hat er ein Konzert in Hamburg gegeben, heute ist die Hugenottenhalle in Neu-Isenburg seine Bühne. In Spanien, wo er lebt, füllt er längst Stadien. Deutschland muss er noch erobern. „Dabei arbeite ich daran schon länger“, lacht er und deutet darauf hin, dass seine Karriere im Grunde hier angefangen hat. Anfang der 1980er Jahre in Hannover.

We catch up with Ara when he stops off in Frankfurt as part of a tour. The night before, he gave a concert in Hamburg; today, it's the Hugenottenhalle in Neu-Isenburg that is his stage. In Spain, where he lives, he has long been filling stadiums. He has yet to conquer Germany, though. "I've been working on that for quite a while," he laughs, hinting that his career basically started here – in Hanover at the beginning of the 1980s.

THE REFUGEE „Damals bekam ich ein Stipendium für die Musikhochschule in Hannover. In meiner Heimat wütete der Bürgerkrieg, und meine Eltern waren froh, mich auf diese Weise an einen sicheren Ort schicken zu können.“ 15 Jahre alt war Ara Malikian, Sohn armenischer Eltern, der bis dahin im Libanon gelebt hatte, als er herkam. Ein Kind. Auf der Suche nach einer besseren Zukunft. „Klingt wie die Geschichte so vieler Geflüchteter heute, nicht wahr?“ Ja und nein.

Angst und Ungewissheit, so ganz ohne die Eltern in einem fremden Land… Doch Ara hat das Glück, ein talentierter Violinist zu sein. Man möchte ihn fördern. Er ist willkommen. Und so meistert er auch eine weitere Hürde: Das Geld für das Stipendium kann ihm nicht ausbezahlt werden, weil er noch nicht volljährig ist. „Da traf ich eine Dame aus der jüdischen Gemeinde, die wollte, dass ich auf der Hochzeit ihrer Tochter spiele. Das einzige Wort, das ich auf Deutsch kannte, war ‚ja‘. Und so begann meine Klezmer-Karriere. Ab dann spielte ich auf allen möglichen jüdischen Festen. Niemand ahnte, dass ich kein Jude bin. Und ich? Ich musste Geld verdienen.

Und ich wusste ohnehin nicht genau, was ein Jude ist. Ich hatte gelernt, dass wir Feinde sind. Aber die Musik hat mir den richtigen Weg gezeigt.“

Ara Malikian, the son of Armenian parents, had lived in Lebanon until he came here at the tender age 15. A child. In search of a better future. "It sounds much like the stor y of so many refugees these days, doesn't it?" Well, yes...and then again no. Full of fear and uncer tainty, without his pa rents in a foreign land... But Ara was luck y that he was a talented violinist. People wanted to sup por t him. He was welcome. And he had to master yet another hurdle: the money for the scholarship couldn't yet be paid to him, as he wasn't yet of age. EL ESPAÑOL Sein Deutsch ist keineswegs „total eingerostet“, er spricht noch erstaunlich fließend. „Mit Deutschland verbinde ich viele schöne Erinnerungen und kostbare Begegnungen“, sagt er. Hier habe er Menschen getroffen, die ihm das Gefühl gegeben haben, willkommen zu sein. Angekommen ist er dann allerdings vor etwa 20 Jahren in Madrid, „das war reiner Zufall, aber auch Liebe auf den ersten Blick.“ Und so mag seine Heimat die Welt sein, sein Zuhause ist die spanische Kapitale, wo er zurzeit noch im Szene-Viertel Malasaña lebt, bald aber ein ruhigeres Quartier beziehen wird. Der Familie wegen. Sein kleiner Sohn ist sein Ein und Alles. Ihm widmet er seine gesamte freie Zeit. Und wünscht sich, dass es allen Familien auf der Welt vergönnt sein mag, nicht durch Armut, Krieg und Vertreibung auseinandergerissen zu werden. Wir hoffen mit ihm. Und freuen uns über diese Begegnung mit Ara Malikian, Flüchtling, Grenzübertreter, Weltentdecker, der auf seiner Suche nach Frieden das Glück fand und dieses nun in seiner Musik mit allen teilt.

His German is by no means "totally rusty"; he still speaks it amazingly fluently. "I associate numerous beautiful memories and treasured encounters with the country of Germany," he says. This is where he met people who made him feel welcome. However, he ended up in Madrid about 20 years ago: "That was pure coincidence, but also love at first sight." And so the world may be his homeland, but his actual home is the Spanish capital, where he currently lives in the trendy district of Malasaña. Soon, however, he will move into a quieter neighbourhood – on account of his family.

His little son means everything to him and he devotes all his free time to him. Malikian fervently hopes that, one day, all families round the world might be lucky enough not to be torn apart by poverty, war and displacement. We hope so, too. And we are delighted that we've had the chance to have a talk with Ara Malikian, refugee, a man who crosses borders, an explorer of the world, a man who found happiness when searching for peace and now shares it in his music with everyone.

Man merkt schon, wenn man reinkommt, dass hier kein durchgestyltes Konzept, keine Marketing-Strategie zum Einsatz kommen. Stattdessen baut man hier in der Weinhandlung Dünker auf Qualität, Kontinuität und Charme. Ein richtiger Familienbetrieb eben, geführt von Christoph Dünker, seiner Frau und den langjährigen Mitarbeitern.

As soon as you enter, you can tell that no over-styled concept, no marketing strategy has been used in this place. Instead, Dünker's wine bar relies on quality, continuity and charm. It's a genuine family-run business, managed by Christoph Dünker, his wife and their long-serving employees.

HOSPITALITY MADE IN „BERNEM“ Der alte Gewölbekeller wurde ursprünglich als Lagerkeller für eine Apfelweinkelterei genutzt, ab 1948 dann vom Vater Peter Dünker für das Abfüllen von Weinen übernommen.

Nach und nach wurde dann auch der Ausschank etabliert und machte den urigen „Bernemer“ Weinkeller schnell zum beliebten Treffpunkt. Und das bis heute und für die verschiedensten Menschen: jung, alt, alteingesessen, zugezogen oder Tourist… Es stimmt schon, dass hier, oberhalb des Uhrtürmchens, mehr als im Rest von Bornheim, ja mehr als sonst wo in Frankfurt, noch dieses dörfliche, nachbarschaftliche Miteinander gepflegt wird. Ein willkommenes Kontrastprogramm zur täglichen Geschäftigkeit in der Frankfurter City.

The old vaulted cellar was originally used for storage by an Apfelwein (Frankfurter apple wine) press house; in 1948, it was taken over by the current manager's father, Peter Dünker, for bottling wines. Then the bar was gradually established and rapidly turned the quaint old "Bernemer" wine cellar into a highly popular meeting place. And that is still true to this day and for the most diverse range of people, too: whether young or old, one of the locals or new to the town or simply just a tourist. It's true that here above the clock tower, a village-like neighbourly atmosphere of togetherness is still prominent, more than in the rest of Bornheim, indeed more than anywhere else in Frankfurt. It is a welcome contrast to the daily busyness in the city of Frankfurt.

Christoph Dünker übernahm das Ruder 1988 und brachte seine eigenen Ideen ein. Vor allem das Thema Qualitätsweine steigerte das Ansehen und sorgte für ein noch breiter gefächertes Publikum in dem kleinen, dunklen Weinkeller, in dem es nach altem Gemäuer und vergangenen Zeiten riecht und in dem es ganz schön eng um die Fässer herum werden kann.

Christoph Dünker took over the helm in 1988, bringing his own ideas on board. It was, above all, the quality wines that increased its reputation and ensured an even wider clientele in the small, dark wine cellar, where it smells of old walls and times gone by and where it can get pretty crowded around the wine barrels.

IN VINO VERITAS Wenn‘s draußen warm ist, sollte man definitiv im hübschen Innenhof sitzen. Auch hier kann’s in lauen Sommernächten eng werden auf den knorrigen alten Bierbänken, die auf dem kopfsteingepflasterten Untergrund immer wieder ins Wackeln geraten und auf denen schon auf so manche Freundschaft angestoßen wurde.

Für die Weine selbst gilt: Christoph Dünker bietet gerne besondere Schätze an, die er auf seinen Reisen zu Weingütern entdeckt und die man in Frankfurt sonst nicht oder nur selten im offenen Ausschank findet.

Auch die fairen Preise haben Seltenheitswert! Die Karte umfasst allein im offenen Ausschank rund 80 Positionen, als Flasche sogar bis zu 300. Präsentiert werden überwiegend regionale Weine sowie die besten Lagen Deutschlands, hinzu kommen ausgesuchte Gewächse aus Südtirol, Österreich, Italien, Spanien und Frankreich. Anbaugebiete in Übersee sind bewusst nicht vertreten: „Unsere Lagen in Europa bieten genug tolle Weine für jeden Geschmack und Geldbeutel.“

IN VINO VERITAS When it's warm outside, you should definitely sit out in the pretty courtyard. Here too, on balmy summer nights, it can get crowded on the gnarled old beer hall benches, which keep wobbling on the cobblestones and on which a lot of friendships have already been sparked.

As for the wines themselves, Christoph Dünker likes to offer special gems, which he discovers on his travels to wineries and which you usually don't come across in Frankfurt or are only rarely sold by the glass. Even the fair prices are a rarity! The wine list contains around 80 items sold by the glass alone and up to 300 sold by the bottle. The list comprises predominantly regional wines as well as the prime wine-growing regions of Germany; in addition there are select varieties from South Tyrol, Austria, Italy, Spain and France. Wine-growing areas from overseas are deliberately not included on the list: "Our areas in Europe offer enough great wines for every taste and budget."

Auf die kleinen feinen Speisen ist man hier übrigens fast genauso stolz wie auf die erlesenen Weine: Eine traditionsreiche Käserei aus dem Allgäu, die Christoph Dünker während eines Urlaubs entdeckte, liefert die cremig bis würzigen Köstlichkeiten, das leckere Schüttelbrot kommt aus Südtirol von der Bäckerei Fritz & Felix, die frische Wurst von der Metzgerei Eidmann in Maintal.

Incidentally, the great food accompaniments on offer are almost as glorious as the exquisite wines: a traditional cheese selection from the Allgäu, discovered by Christoph Dünker while on holiday, delivers a range of creamy to spicy delicacies; the delicious Schüttelbrot crispbread comes from the Fritz & Felix bakery in South Tyrol, and the fresh sausage from the Eidmann butcher's in Maintal.

Das spürt man, das schmeckt man, das beweisen die Macher mit viel Know-how, allen voran der Chef, der zurzeit einen Studiengang zum German Wine Professional belegt. Dabei finde ich, dass Christoph Dünker schon ganz schön viel Weinwissen vermitteln kann. Vor allem im Rahmen der individuellen Weinproben, die ich abschließend noch wärmstens empfehlen möchte: Für 35 Euro pro Person gibt es 8 Weine in thematischer Abfolge zu Degustieren, dazu Wasser, Brot und eine reich bestückte Käseplatte. Herrlich!

So a lot of passion has gone into the old wine cellar, where the Dünker family has been based since the currency reform of 1948. You can feel it, you can taste it, and the creators prove it with all their know-how, especially the boss, who is currently doing a course of studies to become a German Wine Professional. Mind you, I think that Christoph Dünker is already able to impart a lot of knowledge about wine. Especially in the context of the individual wine tasting sessions, which I cannot recommend warmly enough. In the port of Cape Town, an old grain silo was turned into a new beacon of the art world in 2017: the bustling Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, with its many shops and aquarium, is also home to the Zeitz MOCAA, the world's first museum of contemporary African art.

Mit seiner klassizistischen Fassade verheißt das imposante Gebäude von außen Eleganz, Stil und weckt immer wieder meine Vorfreude auf das, was drinsteckt.

Und das kenne ich von vielen Besuchen ziemlich gut.

Nicht zuletzt, weil ich dort einst meinen allerersten Hotel-Job im Controlling gelandet habe. Seither bin ich Fan und der Bayerische Hof mein Maßstab für das idealtypische Hotel als Mikrokosmos, in dem täglich ein neues Stück gegeben wird: Eine Wundertüte aus buntem Hotelleben.

With its classical façade, the imposing building promises elegance and style and never fails to arouse my anticipation of what's inside. And I know that feeling pretty well from many visits, not least because I once landed my very first hotel job in the management control department there. I've been a fan ever since and the Bayerischer Hof is my benchmark for the ideal hotel as a microcosm of life, where a new drama takes place every day: a wonderful pick ’n’ mix of vibrant hotel life.

LOCATION Sobald ich drin bin, möchte ich nicht mehr raus - und muss es auch gar nicht, weil alles vorhanden ist. 340 Zimmer und Suiten, 700 (!) Mitarbeiter, fünf Restaurants, zwei Bars, sagenhaft schöne Festräume für Großveranstaltungen von der Sicherheitskonferenz bis zum Deutschen Filmball. Ein schickes Spa, Dach-Pool, Ice Bar, Cinema Lounge, Nightclub, ein eigenes Boulevard-Theater und elegante Geschäfte im Palais Montgelas, wo ich gern handgeschöpfte Gmunder Papiere anschaue und im Flagshipstore der florentinischen Klosterapotheke Santa Maria Novella am berühmten Acqua di Rose schnuppere.

As soon as I'm inside, I never want to leave – and I don't have to, because everything I need is already here: 340 rooms and suites, 700 (!) staff members, five restaurants, two bars, fabulously beautiful party rooms for major events from a security conference to the German film ball. If you keep to the left as you leave the revolving door and don't get stuck in Schumann's day bar, Lodenfrey or the designer boutiques along the way, you'll come across Ludwig Beck am Rathauseck, a concept store before the term even existed. In the meantime, see what current art exhibitions the Hypo-Kunsthalle is offering; eat the local sausage speciality Weißwurst in the Franziskaner brewery; drop in at the oyster bar in Dallmayr; or head straight for the food stalls at the Viktualienmarkt food market.

Milano und Celentano? Ich gebe zu, der Vergleich bedarf einer Erklärung. Schließlich reicht es nicht, dass der Sänger und Schauspieler in der lombardischen Hauptstadt geboren wurde. Aber wenn ich mich daran erinnere, wie er in seinen Rollen nicht als Beau, sondern als charakterstarker, stilsicherer, selbstbewusster Kerl mit Ecken und Kanten die Herzen zu erobern wusste, dann finde ich die Assoziation eben doch ganz passend. Man könnte auch sagen: Rom kann jeder, Mailand ist Kunst!

Milano and Celentano? I admit that the comparison needs some explanation. After all, it's not enough to find out that the now veteran pop singer and actor was born in the capital of Lombardy. But I do remember how he never won ladies' hearts as a good-looking man in his roles, but instead as a stylish, self-confident guy with a strong character and rough edges, and then I find the association seems quite fitting after all. One could also say that anyone can do Rome, but there's an art to Milan!

Alta moda, international design, the stock exchange, business, the exhibition centre – in this amazingly small metropolis, Italy's tradition and avant-garde as well as timeless art and contemporary design enter into exciting alliances with one another as in no other city. With their nonchalant elegance and casual approach to trends, the Milanese add to this mix the well-deserved crown of the capital of fashion and trends. All this is surely just as cool as the great Celentano! At any rate, I also love Milan, above all because of the Milanese themselves.

LA BELLEZZA QUOTIDIANA Ich stehe im Museo delle Culture. In der viel beachteten Basquiat-Ausstellung. Auch in Frankfurt habe ich sie kurze Zeit später besucht, und ich kann nur sagen, dass mich diese Kunst voll und ganz in ihren Bann zieht. Eigentlich bleibt da wenig, was mich ablenken könnte. Eigentlich. Und doch ist da etwas, das dieses Erlebnis, welches nun über zwei Jahre her ist, komplettiert, vervollkommnet, perfekt macht: das Drumherum.

I'm at the Museo delle Culture – in the much-acclaimed Basquiat exhibition, which I also visited in Frankfurt just a short time later – and I can only say that this is the kind of art that completely fascinates me. Really, there is very little that could distract me from it. Really. And what completes, perfects, tops off this experience, which is now more than two years old, are all the trappings that accompany it.

Mit diesem „Drumherum“ meine ich nicht den Ausstellungsort, sondern die Menschen. Es sind erstaunlich viele Milanesi, die sich die große Retrospektive ansehen wollen.

Keineswegs nur Touristen. Und ich betrachte Basquiat, seine Farben, seine grellen, lauten, fabelhaften Kunstwutausbrüche, und ich betrachte sie, diese unglaublich gut gekleideten Mailänder. Sie haben sich nach ihrem Ermessen nicht in Schale geworfen, sie zeigen sich lediglich im für einen solchen Anlass angemessenen Look. Wie sie es auch tun, wenn sie in die Kirche gehen, ins Theater oder in die Oper…

Now when I say "all the trappings", I don't mean the exhibition venue, but the people. There are an astonishingly large number of Milanese who want to take a look at the great retrospective. It's not just a tourist attraction by any means. And I look at Basquiat and his colours, his bright, loud, fabulous outbursts of artistic rage, and I look at them, these incredibly well dressed Milanese. They didn't just dress up as they saw fit, they simply look completely appropriate for the occasion. Just as they do when they go to church, to the theatre or to the opera...

man möge mir verzeihen – dümmliche Youtube-tutorierte Oberflächlichkeit mit Extensions und überschminkten Gesichtern an den Tag legt. Mein Highlight bleibt aber diese eine Frau im Breitschwanz-Persianer mit dem Anna-Wintour-Bob und dem selbstvergessenen Blick. Ich kann nicht umhin, den Basquiat und sie im Wechsel anzuschauen. Und ich begreife, warum ich Mailand so besonders finde. Weil Kunst und Design hier zum Alltag gehören wie Kaffeetrinken und Zeitunglesen, und doch wissen die Mailänder das Schöne, das sie Tag für Tag umgibt, gebührend zu honorieren.

And I then understand why I find Milan so special – because art and design are part of everyday life here – like drinking coffee and reading newspapers – and yet the people of Milan really know how to properly appreciate the beauty that surrounds them day after day after day.

THE MILANO DESIGN DNA Auch bei meinem letzten Besuch, mitten im Trubel des Salone del Mobile, habe ich mich wie damals im Museum darauf eingelassen, mich von Mailand verführen zu lassen.

Bei meinen Spaziergängen durch die Galerien und Antiquitätenläden sowie die unwiderstehliche Pinacoteca in Brera, wo während der Messe tutto Milano zu sein und hervorragend auszusehen scheint. Wenn man die DNA des Design-Quartiers begreifen möchte, kann man beispielweise Raw auf der Via Palermo besuchen und das Sammelsurium dieses „Cabinet des Curiosités“ aus Vintage-Möbeln, Deko und Accessoires auf sich wirken lassen. Incredibile!

Even during my last visit, in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of the Salone del Mobile, I allowed myself to be seduced by Milan, just like that time in the museum. During my walks through the galleries and antique shops as well as the irresistible Pinacoteca di Brera, where, during the fair, tutto Milano seems to be – looking absolutely fantastic, of course. If you'd like to understand the DNA of the Design Quarter, then you should visit Raw on Via Palermo, for example, and take in the collection of this "cabinet des curiosités" of vintage furniture, decoration and accessories. Incredibile!

Überhaupt ist der Umgang der Milanesi mit Traditionen, Geschichte sowie Kunsthandwerk und Design vergangener Epochen ein wichtiger Faktor, um diesen speziellen Look made in Italy zu begreifen. Während im Rest der Welt der Terminus „Vintage“ dafür überstrapaziert wird, hat man in Italien kein Problem damit, alt und neu zu mischen bzw. alte Stilikonen des Designs zu würdigen. In den Interieurs hipper Milanesi finden sich dann alte Murano-Lüster als Beleuchtung hochmoderner Lofts, Marmor, Kupfer und andere Materialien in den Designs zeitgenössischer Marken.

Und bei der Kleidung? Da schwingt immer eine gewisse Nostalgie mit. Sei es beim nie aus der Mode gekommenen Bleistift-Rock, der schon Claudia Cardinale und Sophia Loren perfekt stand, sei es bei den formellen Looks der italienischen Männer aller Altersklassen, die mit Mut zu Farben und Mustern – sowie zu braunen Schuhen zum dunklen Anzug– erfrischende Nonchalance in die übliche Anzug-Krawatten-Tristesse bringen.

In general, the way the Milanese handle the traditions, history, craftsmanship and design from bygone eras is a crucial factor in understanding this special look that simply screams "made in Italy". Whilst in the rest of the world the term "vintage" is overused, in Italy people have no problem mixing the old and the new or appreciating old design style icons. In hip Milanese interiors, old Murano chandeliers can be found as the lighting accessories of ultra-modern lofts and marble, copper and other materials are incorporated into the designs of contemporary brands. And what about clothing? There is always a certain nostalgia involved here. Whether it's the never out-of-fashion pencil skirt, which already suited Claudia Cardinale and Sophia Loren perfectly, or the formal looks of Italian men of all ages, who, with their courage to make use of colours and patterns, bring some refreshing nonchalance to the usual suit and tie tristesse – even if they do wear brown shoes with dark suits.

LE DELIZIE Zurück zum Verführtwerden: Natürlich hat mich Mailand auch wieder beim Schlendern über die mondäne Via Monte Napoleone und durch die majestätische Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (inklusive caffè an der Bar des legendären Miani) gekriegt. Und einmal mehr beim Aperitivo im angesagten Szeneviertel Isola sowie beim gefühlt hundertsten Besuch des Doms und beim Blick von den Terrassen auf Milanos Skyline. Und selbstverständlich hat es spätestens während der „Audienz“ bei Leonardo in Santa Maria delle Grazie (da Vincis „Das letzte Abendmahl“ kann übrigens nur nach Voranmeldung besichtigt werden!) vollends gefunkt. Doch womit hat mich Milano noch vor dem Einsatz all dieser Waffen aus Kunst, Design und Mode verführt?

Ganz klar: mit dem Essen.

Back to being seduced… Naturally, Milan cast its spell over me again whilst strolling along the sophisticated Via Monte Napoleone and all through the majestic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (including caffè at the bar of the legendary Miani). As it did again when I sipped an aperitivo in the trendy Isola district, as well as at what felt like the hundredth visit to the cathedral and the view of Milan's skyline from the terraces. And, of course, at the latest during the "audience" with Leonardo in Santa Maria delle Grazie (da Vinci's "The Last Supper" can only be visited by appointment!) I was completely under the city's spell. But what was it about Milano that seduced me even before it employed all these weapons of art, design and fashion?

What else but the food?

Ich liebe es, den Tag so zu beginnen, wie es die Mailänder tun: mit einem guten Kaffee, einer Zeitung und einer butterigen, wolkig leichten, zart süßen Brioche. Dio mio! Es gibt nichts Besseres! Natürlich gibt es einige Adressen, an denen das Frühstücksgebäck der Italiener besonders empfehlenswert ist: Die Pasticceria Sissi auf der Piazza Risorgimento ist das beste (und längst nicht mehr als Geheimtipp gehandelte) Beispiel. Doch auch die einfachen Cafeterias und Bars, in denen die Menschen vor der Arbeit oder in der Pause einkehren, um an der Bar einen caffè zu trinken, bieten meist köstliche Backwaren und Panini an – Fast Food und Coffee to-go bleiben selbst in einer hektischen Business-Metropole wie Milano, so wie übrigens in ganz Italien, eher den Touristen vorbehalten.

I love starting the day the way the Milanese do: with a good coffee, a newspaper and a buttery, light and delicately sweet brioche. Dio mio! There is nothing better! Of course, there are some places where Italian breakfast pastries are particularly recommended: the pasticceria Sissi in Piazza Risorgimento is the best example (and no longer an insider's tip). But even simple cafeterias and bars where people stop before work or during a break for a coffee at the bar usually offer delicious pastries and panini. Fast food and takeaway coffees are rather the preserve of the tourist even in a hectic business metropolis like Milano – just like in the whole of Italy, by the way.

Was ich an der italienischen Küche – wenn man es bei der regionalen Vielfalt überhaupt so pauschal sagen darf – unglaublich schätze, ist die Verbundenheit zu Tradition und Heimat. So habe auch ich es von meinem Vater und meiner italienischen Familie gelernt, mich wie ein Kind darüber zu freuen, wenn man mir, zum Beispiel bei der Rückkehr von einer Reise, einen simplen Teller Spaghetti mit Olivenöl serviert. Diese „semplicità“ und die Liebe zum Produkt sind essenziell in der cucina italiana.

What I really appreciate about Italian cuisine – if I may speak so broadly despite all the regional diversity – is its connection to tradition and home. Thus, I also learnt from my father and my Italian family to be as pleased as Punch when I was served a simple plate of spaghetti with olive oil on my return from some trip, for example. This "semplicità" and the love of good produce are essential aspects of la cucina italiana.

Ein wahrlich deliziöses Beispiel dafür ist die Küche des Ratanà, wo der gebürtige Mailänder Cesare Battisti die Klassiker seiner Heimat zeitgemäß interpretiert und so unglaubliche Geschmackserlebnisse offeriert wie die Gnocchi mit Anchovi-Sauce, Limette und schwarzem Trüffel oder die phantastische Komposition aus Erdbeere und Tomate in verschiedenen Texturen zu einem Basilikum-Biscuit. Gekrönt wird das Erlebnis durch die sagenhafte Auswahl an erstklassigen Weinen.

One truly delicious example of this is the cuisine of Ratanà, where Milan- born Cesare Battisti interprets the classics of his homeland in a contemporary way, offering such incredible taste experiences as gnocchi with anchovy sauce, lime and black truffle or the fantastic combination of strawberry and tomato in various textures on a basil biscuit. The experience is crowned by a fabulous selection of first- class wines.

Darauf folgt die Frage: „Was möchten sie essen?“ und darauf eine Folge an Speisen und Weinen, die, wenn man sich voll und ganz dieser kulinarischen Suche nach dem eigenen Ich inmitten von majestätischem Stuck und Kunst hingibt, ein Erlebnis fürs Leben ist. Garantiert!

house in the Via Meda. Now, you could interpret that as a typical PR statement – after all, all cooks do that – but, when you open the menu, you actually look into a mirror. Then comes the question "What would you like to eat?", followed by a whole series of dishes and wines that, if you devote yourself entirely to this culinary search for your own self in the midst of all this majestic stucco and art, is not an experience you'll ever forget in your life. Guaranteed!

Was bleibt mir noch zu schreiben? So viele schöne Dinge, die den Rahmen dieses Beitrags sprengen würden. Fürs Erste freue ich mich, dass ich die Vernunft beiseitegelassen und mich dem Impuls hingegeben habe, Mailand meine Liebe zu erklären. Und weil ich weiß, dass die Liebe eine zarte Pflanze ist, die man hegen und pflegen muss, freue ich mich umso mehr auf meine nächste Reise nach Milano und auf eine Fortsetzung dieser „Storia d’amore“, wie sie einst schon Celentano besungen hat…

What's left for me to write? There are so many beautiful things that would go beyond the scope of this article. For now, I am happy that I have set reason aside and given myself over to the impulse to declare my love for Milan. And because I know that love is a delicate plant that must be nurtured, I am looking forward all the more to my next trip to Milan and to a continuation of this "storia d'amore", as Adriano Celentano once sang of.

Denn wir, hier in Frankfurt und dem RheinMain-Gebiet, befinden uns im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes in einer sehr glücklichen Lage. Hier einige der schönsten Ziele rund um Frankfurt für eine kleine oder größere Landpartie.

Never mind! Because here in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main area, we find ourselves in a very fortunate position – in the truest sense of the word. Here is where you can find some of the most beautiful destinations around Frankfurt for a little outing or even a more ambitious excursion.

HOME – RHEIN-MAIN COUNTRY

RHEINGAU Eine Traumkulisse, wie es sie kaum ein zweites Mal gibt, erwartet einen keine Autostunde von Frankfurt entfernt: die sanften Hügel des Rheingau mit seinem 3.000 Hektar großen Weinanbaugebiet, in dem fast 300 Winzer ihrer Kunst und ihrem Handwerk nachgehen. Hier sollte man unbedingt ein paar der phantastischen Weine probieren. Am besten verbunden mit einer Übernachtung, oder auch zwei, schließlich bleibt’s nicht immer bei einem Glas. Besonders deliziös kann man das im Hotel und Restaurant Kronenschlösschen in Eltville, wo auch jährlich das berühmte Rheingau Gourmet Festival stattfindet.

In Rüdesheim wiederum sollte man sich die Drosselgasse nicht entgehen lassen, die es mit nur 144 Metern Länge und gerade mal zwei Metern Breite zu weltweitem Ruhm bei Fans rheinischer Geselligkeit gebracht hat. Auch eine Fahrt mit der Seilbahn bis hinauf zum Niederwalddenkmal ist ein Muss: Der Blick auf die Landschaft und den wunderbaren Rhein ist einzigartig.

HOME – RHEIN-MAIN COUNTRY

Nicht zuletzt sollte man einen Besuch im Kloster Eberbach mit seiner beeindruckenden mittelalterlichen Kulisse und der phantastischen Lage oberhalb des Rheingaus einplanen. Einst wurde hier der Hollywood-Blockbuster „Der Name der Rose“ gedreht, heute ist der majestätische Bau Eventlocation und Spielstätte des jährlichen Rheingau Musik Festivals mit Fans rund um den Globus.

Last but not least, don’t forget to visit the Eberbach Monastery, with its impressive medieval backdrop and its stunning location above the Rheingau. The Hollywood blockbuster "The Name of the Rose" was once filmed here. Today, the majestic building hosts special events and is the venue of the annual Rheingau Music Festival, which attracts fans from all over the globe.

Beginnen wir mit dem Vordertaunus und einem der schönsten Zoos Deutschlands: Im Opel Zoo in Kronberg haben Elefanten, Zebras und Co. jede Menge Platz auf wunderbar weitläufigen Gehegen mitten im Grünen. Auch Spaziergänge durch die hübschen Taunusstädtchen Kronberg und Königstein mit ihren romantischen Altstadtgassen und tollen Läden, Cafés und Restaurants lohnt. Die Burgruine Königstein ist zudem jedes Jahr Schauplatz eines spektakulären Ritterturniers mit Mittelaltermarkt. Auf der Burg Kronberg gibt’s den Blick über Frankfurt und – bei gutem Wetter – bis in den Odenwald gratis dazu.

Let's start with the Vordertaunus and one of the most beautiful zoos in Germany. In the Opel Zoo in Kronberg, elephants, zebras and the like roam around wonderfully spacious enclosures surrounded by greenery. It's also worth taking a walk through the pretty Taunus towns of Kronberg and Königstein, with the romantic streets of their historic town centres and great shops, cafes and restaurants. The ruin of Königstein castle also forms the backdrop of a spectacular knights tournament and medieval market every year. At Kronberg castle, there's a view over Frankfurt and – in good weather – the Odenwald free of charge!

Wer’s royal mag, nimmt den Afternoon Tea im Schlosshotel Kronberg, früher als Schloss Friedrichshof Witwensitz für die ehemalige deutsche Kaiserin und englische Prinzessin Victoria und heute eins der luxuriösesten Hotels der Region mit herrlichen Parkanlagen und Golfplatz. Last but not least lohnt ein Abstecher auf den Großen Feldberg, mit rund 880 Metern höchste Erhebung im Taunus und Garant für tolle Panoramafotos.

Take an impressive journey back to the time of the Roman Empire with a visit to the legendary Saalburg, a fort built around 2,000 years ago on the Taunus Ridge northwest of today's Bad Homburg. It was rebuilt about 100 years ago, so that today you can still visit the former border of the Roman Empire: the Limes. If you wish to continue walking on historical paths, visit the much younger buildings of the open-air museum Hessenpark – a cosy image of the rural life of yesteryear.

Last but not least, it's worth making a detour to the Grosser Feldberg. At about 880 metres, it's the highest elevation in the Taunus region, guaranteeing some great panoramic photos.

A true natural paradise beyond the commotion of the city can be found just a few kilometres south of Frankfurt in the Geo-Nature Park Bergstrasse-Odenwald. WETTERAU Zwischen den Ausläufern des Vogelsberges und den Hängen des Taunus, keine halbe Stunde Fahrt von der Frankfurter Innenstadt entfernt, lockt die Wetterau mit ihren sanften Hügeln, sattgrünen Wiesen und Wäldern sowie golden schimmernden Feldern. Das zu den ältesten Kulturlandschaften Europas gehörende Areal ist ein phantastisches Ziel für Wanderer und Radfahrer. Vor allem die Limes-Route, die sich auf 40 Kilometern zwischen Main-Kinzig-Kreis und Wetteraukreis erstreckt, ist dank der jüngst von beiden Landkreisen realisierten Visualisierungen in Form weißer Holzstelen und weiß gekalkter Altbaumbestände entlang der einstigen Wall- und Grenzanlagen spannender denn je. Auf besonders beeindruckenden historischen Pfaden kann man auch in Friedberg wandeln. Dort befindet sich unter anderem die größte

Our absolute musthave: cherries from Ockstadt. In summer, you can get them fresh from one of the many farm shops or from a market stand and throughout the year with some good Ockstadt cherry schnapps. Auch wurde bei schönstem Frühlingswetter der Frankfurt Gold Cup ausgespielt. Ein echtes Highlight auch für Laien und ein tolles Event für die ganze Familie.

FREUD & FETISH DJ Sidney Spaeth („Le Panther“) hat die Freud’sche Couch frisch bezogen, pardon, eine Underground-Location für Fetisch- und Techno-Partys am Holzgraben eröffnet. Im Gewölbekeller, beschallt mit einer Anlage von Klang-Messias Max Koendgen, soll es vorerst bis Jahresende zur Sache gehen, ähnlich wie im wilden Berliner KitKat-Club. Für Späth die Zukunft: „Die Menschen gehen eher zu Events als in die Clubs, das wollen wir bieten.“

In the vaulted cellar, filled with a sound system by Klang-Messias Max Koendgen, things will get going until the end of the year, similar to the wild KitKat-Club in Berlin. For Späth the future: "People are more likely to go to events than to clubs, that's what we want to offer.

TERMINAL 3 2023 soll das neue Passagierterminal am Flughafen fertig sein, für das jetzt der Grundstein gelegt wurde. Two new gates and 24 gate positions offer space for an additional 21 million passengers a year. Airport operator Fraport calculates construction costs of up to four billion euros. The airport will be opened in stages, and low-cost airlines will already be taking off at the end of 2021.

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the German Film Institute and Film Museum in Frankfurt and the inauguration of the new DFF Fassbinder Center, Director Ellen M. Harrington invited to a ceremony in the new institute rooms on Eschersheimer Landstraße.

In addition to all sorts of archival treasures such as original costumes and props by Maria Schell or Klaus Kinski, there is another cinematic highlight: the beautiful garden hidden behind modern high-rise architecture. Pity that the center is not open to the public.

During the Jewish Culture Weeks (27.10 - 17.11.) of the Jewish Community Frankfurt, the kosher pop-up bakery of the US American and Berlin-based Laurel Kratochvila offers the Kringel at its best in the Schirn Café. Genuine, handmade New York water bagels and other specialities convey Jewish culinary delights.

Anlässlich des 70jährigen Bestehens des Deutschen Filminstituts und Filmmuseums in Frankfurt sowie der Einweihung des neuen DFF Fassbinder Centers lud Direktorin Ellen M. Harrington zum Festakt in den neuen Institutsräumen an der Eschersheimer Landstraße. Neben allerhand archivarischen Schätzen wie original Kostümen und Requisiten von Maria Schell oder Klaus Kinski gibt es hier noch ein weiteres filmreifes Highlight: den wunderschönen, hinter moderner Hochhausarchitektur versteckten Garten. Schade, dass das Center nicht öffentlich ist.

The vegetarian-vegan restaurant "Vevay" at Schauspiel Frankfurt has got a branch in Kleiner Hirschgraben 10. The café-restaurant shares the philosophy of the original, but attracts with a new menu and usual high quality. At the double head: Chef Yilmaz Yaka, a native of Rüsselsheim.

At Remos in Ulmenstraße, the four Rashica siblings celebrate Mediterranean cuisine in industrial chic interiors. "Joy of life, friendship and enjoyment" is the motto of the mini chain with locations in Koblenz and Westerwald. At the pre-opening, the "flying" pizzas in the big show cucina were a real treat.

Mit „Making Van Gogh“ geht die größte und aufwendigste Schau in der Städel-Geschichte an den Start: 140 Werke, davon 50 zentrale Arbeiten des zu Lebzeiten verkannten Malers. Für den Blockbuster räumt das Museum seinen unterirdischen Erweiterungsbau frei. Gogh-Mania!
