EDITORIAL “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:37 - 39 ESV Throughout life, there will always be challenges and trials, but how we respond to these things will determine the outcome. Verse 31 says “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” No matter what trials may be coming against you, there is one thing that is absolutely certain and true. There is nothing that is able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The love of God, which is so vast and indescribable, is able to reach to the highest heavens and melt the hardest of heart. It is so liberating to know that the unconditional love of the Heavenly Father is freely available and cannot be earned, but is given as a gift of grace. So many are looking for love in the wrong places. However, true love can only be found in a living, vibrant relationship with Jesus who has promised to never leave or forsake us. Know that His love is constant, dependable and true. As you spend time reading this issue of REACH, I trust that you will gain a greater understanding of the love of God towards you and others within your world. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment towards the ministry of CBN. Because of you we are able to reach out to callers daily and see lives restored and renewed. It is because of your support that people are set free from bondage and fear, to receive true love and peace, through the gift of Jesus on the cross.

TEACHING

OUR COVENANT WITH GOD In these uncertain times, we can take comfort in belonging to a kingdom that has no end, whose builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11:10). He will never leave or forsake us. His covenant, made through the blood of Jesus, remains sure. God has adopted us as His children forever. Galatians 3:26 tells us, “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” It can also be translated, “You are all children of God.” In Rome, women could not own or inherit property. Yet in God’s kingdom, we all have full entitlement and equal inheritance. The passage continues: “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (vv. 27-29). Down through the ages, God’s covenants remain unchanged. His covenant with Abraham still stands: “In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 12:3). The covenant of the law given to Moses at Sinai is still in effect, forming the basis of our modern understanding of right and wrong. Above all, I praise God for the new covenant made through Christ.

04

His blood cleanses us from every sin and makes us righteous - giving us right standing in His kingdom. Under this new covenant, we are to seek the kingdom of God. Jesus tells us in the Lord’s prayer: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10 KJV). Jesus also says in Matthew 6:33-34, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow.” When we seek first the dominion of God and His will, and also our right standing in that kingdom, everything else will be added unto us. Paul explains in 2 Corinthians 1:20, “For all the promises of God in Him are yes, and in Him amen, to the glory of God through us.” It is amazing to realise that Paul is writing this letter in prison - where he also describes himself as possessing all things (6:10). Jesus is our inheritance. Everything He has is ours - not just in some far-off time, but where we are right now. All the fullness of God is within us today because we are fulyl-fledged citizens in His eternal kingdom.

WHAT IS A COVENANT?

Gordon Robertson, Chief Executive Officer

“He will never leave or forsake us. His covenant, made through the blood of Jesus, remains sure.”

The term “covenant” is of Latin origin, meaning coming together. It is quite commonly used in legal, social (marriage), religious and theological contexts. The Bible speaks of many covenants between God and His people, but a special one is made with the coming of Christ. Read Hebrews 8:6–13 to learn more about the way Jesus made it possible for us to have a closer relationship with God.

Scripture is quoted from the NKJV except as noted. Ths teaching was adapted from a sermon given during a CBN staff chapel.

INSIDE CBN

WE ARE ON THE MOVE! From Our CBN Regional Director, Mark Dijkens

By the time that you read this, we will have moved into our new office! I remember the scripture the Lord gave us last year from Isaiah 54:2 (NIVUK) that says: “Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back, lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left; your descendants will dispossess nations and settle in their desolate cities.” Today, we have seen this word fulfilled as we move to our new premises, which will give us room to grow as a ministry. With the additional space we will be able to expand our Superbook ministry, organise partner events and start recording content for TV and social media. The picture you see is of our new building before the renovations started! 06

We also believe that God is moving us spiritually, giving us a greater platform and influence as a ministry to speak life and hope into many more lives. During this new season, God gave us the word from Joshua 1 where He instructs Joshua to move into the promised land. In verse 4 the Lord promises Joshua: “Wherever you set your foot, you will be on land I have given you”. With this promise also comes an instruction. In verse 9 the Lord says: “This is my command – be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” We look forward to taking new ground in this season. Thank you for your prayers and support, helping us to make the move – and together making a greater impact for His glory in 2017!

CBN STORY

HE CALLS ME HIS BELOVED Tessa Afshar was born in Iran. As she shares, “I grew up believing that all faiths were more or less the same. It was a man-made thing; it answered our needs. And I just wasn’t one of those people who needed it. By the time I was a teenager, there was a profound sense of loneliness that had settled in my heart.” After her parents got divorced her mother decided to move to the UK. There she started attending a boarding school for girls. “We were told that we had to attend church. They told those of us from a different faith to sit on the balcony and read our own faith books. I used to sneak romance novels under my uniform. Stories my heart was hungry for.” Tessa ventured to the U.S. for college. There, she met a young man, fell in love and got married. “When that marriage ended, I came into a very dark place. My formula for life proved faulty – if I was good enough, if I was smart enough, if I worked hard enough, if I was enough, then I could be happy. And that hadn’t worked.” Not long after that, Tessa had a dream about Jesus. “I never heard the Gospel, I never read the Bible. But, I knew he was the Son of God. The measure of love that put him on the cross, and the depth of power that made the stars, they shone through those eyes. And I almost fell on my knees because I couldn’t stand anymore. Very quickly after that the Lord surrounded me with Christians; they all invited me to church and for the first time in my life, I read the Bible.” Tessa shares that when she accepted Jesus in her life, she found the love she had always been looking for. “God – He is someone greater than other men. He pursues us. He was the one who saw me, this faulty, average, fallen young girl, and he set his affections on me. My worth isn’t in what I do. My worth is that Jesus calls me His beloved.”

“My worth isnʼt in what I do. My worth is that Jesus calls me His beloved.”

DEVOTION

GODʼS POWERFUL LOVE FOR US It’s that time of year where everyone is talking about love. The plastic balloons fill the shop windows, Instagram is covered in couples taking selfies, and chocolates and roses are being handed out everywhere. People see love as being quite sweet and lovely, but the truth is, love is a force to be reckoned with, love is beautiful and intimate as well as powerful.

Think of a father for a second. In his first moments of being a dad, he looks down at his child who opens his eyes for the first time and meets his. The love he feels is intense, the child doesn’t even know who he is, and yet the father has this deep intimate love for his child. He holds the baby close in his tight yet gentle embrace. This love is gentle, peaceful, beautiful, intimate and pure. But that father’s love can be expressed in other ways. If his child is in danger then love will act again but it will be a fierce love. The father will do everything in his power to protect his child, even to the point of laying his life down for the baby because he loves him so much. This love is outrageous, powerful, strong and dangerous to any who oppose it. God’s love for you is the same, in fact in 1 John 4:8 it says that “God is Love”. He loved you so much that He created you, He watched over you before you even knew Him, He cares about you more than you could ever know, He holds you close in a tight embrace whispering His love for you. But He also loves you with a ferocious love, a love that sent his own son Jesus to die for you, a love so strong that it defeated death and sin so that it couldn’t lay a finger on you. Think about this today, the depth and reality of God’s love for you. The beauty and the strength, the intimacy and the sheer power. He loves you so much.

GLOBAL IMPACT

SAVING LIVES IN MANY WAYS

We are so grateful to our faithful CBN partners. Last year you offered life-giving medical care to so many that were disabled or facing death. Here are just a few powerful stories:

Haoxuan

Born to a poor family in rural China, Haoxuan was diagnosed at birth with a life-threatening heart disease. His parents knew their

10

child wouldn’t survive to adulthood if left untreated. His elderly grandparents were too ill to work, and his father was a labourer who earned little. His treatment would be costly. In desperation, Haoxuan’s parents took him to many hospitals, hoping someone could help. His case was so severe that some clinics couldn’t treat him. CBN partners stepped forward - working with several organisations to provide the second essential operation. Haoxuan and his parents are thrilled that he is now strong and healthy, with a brighter future ahead!

Harish

The walls were closing in on Harish, a vegetable vendor in India. First, his business began to decline when produce prices rose. Then, his vision started to blur, eventually bringing his work to a standstill. With no income, his wife took their three daughters to live at her parents’ home - while Harish struggled alone, living in a shabby rented house that he could barely afford. Destitute, starving, and nearly blind, his neighbours took pity on him and brought him meals. He missed his family, but he didn’t know how he could ever provide for them. Thankfully, he heard about a CBN-sponsored medical camp. There, a doctor diagnosed him with cataracts, and CBN partners provided free surgery! “I am thankful to CBN for helping me get my eye operation,” Harish exclaimed. “I can now get back to work, and also restore my family!” This year, your support will provide critical aid to those in need - while offering eternal life to millions, both here in the UK and worldwide. Thank you for standing with us! To read more about how CBN partners are impacting the lives of many people in need, please visit cbneurope.com/partners.

GLOBAL IMPACT

A PLACE TO CALL HOME Jinxi had been in and out of the hospital with heart trouble since she was born. “Her lips and cheeks were always purple, and her fingernails were black,” Wang remembers. “She couldn’t walk much, and she was always tired.” Jinxi needed surgery, but after Wang’s husband abandoned the family, she didn’t know how she’d ever afford that. She recalls, “I told myself – I will do whatever it takes to save my daughter!” So Wang left Jinxi with her mother while she worked at a factory 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Making around £330 a month, it would take at least three years to save up for surgery. And Wang was afraid her daughter wouldn’t live that long. Then, Wang had an idea. “I never told 12

anyone,” she confesses, “but I saw an ad that said you could get a lot of money by selling a kidney on the black market. It was the only way I could get enough money in time to save Jinxi’s life.” Right before Wang could finalise the sale, a doctor told CBN about Jinxi. We quickly helped set-up and pay for the surgery. “The news was like a beam of sunshine,” Wang shares with joy. “My daughter would live and not die.” Even though Jinxi’s heart surgery was complicated, it turned out to be a complete success. “Now, she is very healthy. She can play and walk, and run.” declares Wang. “The people at CBN are angels to Jinxi. Words can’t express the gratefulness I have in my heart. You gave my daughter a second chance on life.”

GLOBAL IMPACT

LOOK AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING AROUND THE WORLD: MYNAMAR Htet Myat, a 10-year-old boy watched Superbook at Sunday school, he got interested in the Bible, and now attends church regularly. Despite his family’s disapproval, Htet Myat accepted Jesus as his Saviour. Now he tells other children about Jesus. Once a troublemaker, his teacher recognises the change in him, a change Htet Myat attributes to “the leading of the Holy Spirit.”

PERU

At 11 years old, Jeremias had only known poverty. His family lived in a shack made of corn stalks that leaked when it rained and rats infested the roof. His father Carlos grew fruit to earn a living. But in hard times, he was reduced to killing rats

for his family’s dinner. Carlos admitted, “One of my sons told me, ‘Dad, we are living like animals!’ It broke my heart…” He wanted to earn more, but lacked the right seeds, tools, and fertilizer. Then, CBN’s Operation Blessing Peru gave him everything he needed to plant cilantro, a good cash crop that grows quickly. He can now provide for his family! We also built them a house with new beds. Jeremias says, “I love my new house. Thank you!”

GEORGIA For 13 years, Irma and her three children endured her husband’s violent abuse. In desperation, Irma escaped with her children. As a single mother she couldn’t provide food for her family. She prayed and then help came. Orphan’s Promise brought them food and provided meals for the children. Also, OP bought Irma a sewing machine and supplies for a small business! Irma exclaimed, “My kids no longer go hungry. Thank you!”

PERU The Orphan’s Promise breakfast programme served over 3,100 meals to children across seven impoverished districts of Lima.

13

FEATURED

HE CALLS US HIS BRIDE If there is one thing we all share in common, it is the need for love, to be known, cherished and treasured. There isn’t a culture where marriage doesn’t play an integral part in society. I had a fixed idea

“And it shall be, in that day, says the Lord, “That you will call Me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer call Me ‘My Master.’” Hosea 2: 16

14

of love when I was younger; it involved butterflies dancing in my stomach, heart racing, flowers and candles. As a teenager I would watch films that painted love in colours of romance, sweetness and passion. But what most of them failed to show me, is that real love didn’t come to me with a flower bouquet or a picnic by the lake. Real love came to me in a cross, full of blood, pain and sacrifice. In Jeremiah 17:9, we learn that our hearts are deceitful. To trust and follow our emotions can lead us down a path

full of disappointment and frustration. We have all been in that place where something that first brought us so much joy and happiness suddenly feels more like a burden, and all you can see is the negative side of things. It could be that exciting new role you decided to take on, but few months later revealed to be much more hard work that you expected. Or it could be your marriage where all the fun and laughter you had while dating, was replaced for busy routines and conversations about roasting tins and kitchen gadgets. You see, if we are not careful our hearts

15

FEATURED can easily take us to a place of sorrow, fading our excitement and enthusiasm. We easily forget our first love for things. It is a sad reality, but we live in a society where divorce is normal, and it only reveals how people see and understand marriage. People normally are great at dating. The thrill of getting to know each other, helps them to focus on the other rather than on themselves. When pursuing someone you try to understand them, to listen, to find out what they like, you try to serve, to please. While normally people are great at dating, most fail to continue the same pursuit after marriage. Differently from what is displayed in society, God showed us how real love should look like. He loved us from the beginning and created us to participate in His world, and experience deep intimacy with Him. His love for us was so big that even when we did wrong, He created a master plan that would

16

“Our hearts can easily take us to a place of sorrow, fading our excitement and enthusiasm.” make sure we still could connect and communicate with Him. Jesus came representing God’s love for us. It showed us that our Creator is pursuing us and that His love will not be less because of our faults. As if this were not enough, He reveals Himself as a loving and jealous bridegroom and compares us to a cherished bride. He doesn’t only pursue us, He pursues us as a man pursues the bride that has completely captivated his heart.

FEATURED He not only desires us, He desires us passionately. Always in the first love. In Hosea 2:16, God speaks to His people saying, “And it shall be, in that day, says the Lord, “That you will call Me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer call Me ‘My Master.’” What an invitation, to be one with Jesus! This month while we celebrate Valentine’s Day, I would like to encourage you to reflect on your relationship with God. To not let the emotions and the ups and downs of life dictate how you relate to Him. Nor that the busy routines and day to day tasks make your conversations with Him seem as trivial as talking about roasting tins and kitchen gadgets! Let’s be in pursuit of God. We were created to be in an intimate relationship with Him, actively and intentionally seeking to know Him better, understanding Him deeper, to find out what He likes, how to serve and how to please. Our greatest commandment is to “love the Lord you God with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul, and all your strength” (Mark 12:29-30). Not simply to say ‘Good Morning”, “Good Night’ and meet at Sundays at church, but to love Him passionately. Can you imagine how it is to love someone with all your heart? All your mental capacity? All your whole being? With all that makes you? If it seems like something difficult for you, first be encouraged that He is already in pursuit of you. That His desire is for you to be one with Him. Second, we need to be intentional with our relationship with God. Have you ever been on a car journey where the views were amazing, but you only noticed minutes later because you were using your phone? It is difficult to understand someone better if your focus is not on them. Our focus needs to be on Him.

Paula Marrett, Branding Manager

“He doesnʼt only pursue us, He pursues us as a man pursues the bride that has completely captivated his heart.”

My challenge is for you to be practical about focusing on God. To intentionally nurture this relationship. To look for Him while you are at work or school. To learn how to recognise His voice. To go deeper in His Word. To pursue Him. And I pray as you go on this journey you will find yourself completely in love with the One who chose to call you His bride. 17

SUPERBOOK BRINGS JOY TO JAPANESE KIDS

NEHEMIAH

Superbook is making inroads in Japan. Festivals were held in the region of Kyushu, the area that was hit by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in April. Kyushu Christ Disaster Relief Centre head, Pastor Yogi Nakamura says, Superbook is part of the trauma counselling for the children. “We wanted to bring hope to the children who are still recovering from trauma brought about by the earthquake. Many children here are still afraid. They can’t sleep by themselves, so Superbook is a big encouragement to the kids,” he explained. Superbook has also stirred the churches towards strengthening their children’s ministries. As many churches don’t even have Sunday school, it was mostly the adults who attended the event. Jenny Oh is a missionary among the children. She was delighted with Superbook’s “The First Christmas“ episode, which was shown in the festival. She said, “It gives them a different perspective about Christmas. They don’t know about Jesus. They don’t know the meaning of what the Christ part is. It’s important to tell them what the real meaning of Christmas is, in a way they can understand.”

When Chris is asked to tutor two poor students who are also class clowns, he doubts he’s the guy for the job. Superbook then whisks Chris, Joy and Gizmo away to ancient Jerusalem. They meet Nehemiah, who is mocked and threatened as he rebuilds the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah did not let anything discourage him. He had an important job to do - his orders came from God in heaven! To get the episode visit superbook.org.uk

INTERVIEW

TERRY MEEUWSEN

Terry Meeuwsen is co-host of The 700 Club and 700 Club Interactive. She and her husband Andy are the parents of seven, including five adopted children. It was this passion for adoption that led Terry to launch Orphan’s Promise in 2006.

THE GOD ADVENTURE

Interview from The 700 Club

You adopted three children in Ukraine and that was just the beginning of the journey God was leading you on. How was the process for you? As much as you fill out the paperwork and do all the background checks, are finger printed, and put all that money into it, you never know if it will happen. And we were told, after putting thousands of dollars into it that the girl’s paperwork had been lost and that we would have to start all over again. And I remember walking into the bedroom that we had prepared and saying “God are these three little girls ever going to live here? If this was just a test of faith, then I am ok with that. But I am just puzzled by why we have gone through all this”. And into my spirit at that moment dropped a word ‘Hold fast to the vision, 20

Terry issues a challenge to believers to exchange their comfort zone for an eternal impact. This book was born out of an unexpected detour late in Meeuwsen’s life that led her and her husband to adopt three sisters from Ukraine. A testimony to God’s provision and faithfulness, but it is much more than one family’s story. It is the call of God to His people. Find it at cbneurope.com/ resources

INTERVIEW though it tarries it will surely come to pass’ I didn’t know this was a scripture, so I asked a colleague and she said yes it was in Habakkuk 2:3. I thought, God I don’t get it, I just don’t understand it. Then one day at just the right time, the paperwork was done. We had our plane tickets, our childcare planned, our hotel reservations - everything. And we went and waited over there for a week and then finally at the right time things began to happen. And you are right it was just the beginning of the journey. Nowhere near the finishing line! It’s so hard to adopt that I’m amazed that people go through that process. There are going to be trauma issues, and regardless of their age I think they are likely to wonder – ‘was I not good enough’? Yes but it kind of weeds out the ones who shouldn’t adopt. It’s a serious thing, because there are abandonment and rejection issues that you have to work through. And yes, exactly, there were many adjustment issues for our four children and with hindsight if I could go back and do it again, there would have been so many things I would be smarter about and more sensitive to. So let me ask this question, if you could go back and do it again would you do it, and why? Absolutely! Well first because God told me to, but second because my kids are awesome! They are struggling but still on their journeys, and not all of them are walking with the Lord. But there is a call on us to walk that journey with

“Hold fast to the vision, though it tarries it will surely come to pass.”

them, and we are going to do it. You have found the heart of the Lord. That even when we are rebellious and when we have all our trauma issues, He still holds fast. You know, the other thing that’s awesome about it, is that I think just having children in general, is such a reminder of how God loves us, that it keeps you in that place of gratitude before him saying ‘That was me to you, how I broke your heart and you are there always’. 21

PRAYER CENTRE

SEEKING HIS FACE Our God is a God of relationship. He is not a distant, hands-off God. He numbers the days of our lives even before we take our first breath. We are told in Genesis that, after creation, God walked in the Garden of Eden, communing with the humans He had made in His image. They saw Him because there was no sin to obscure their vision of Him. To ‘seek God’s face’ is to strive for that same intimate fellowship with God. It means praying that you might be close to HIm, be led by Him, and be used in His plan. Do you need prayer? Call us on 0300 561 0700 (UK), 1 513 3738 (ROI) or +44 207 101 7045 (Europe). TESTIMONY Last year Fay was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. “I immediately started chemotherapy. I had a mastectomy in January of 2016 then 15 cycles of radiotherapy. At the initial stage I was told by my oncologist that it was almost a certainty that the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes under my arm. I am a Christian and I believe in God’s grace and mercy. I prayed and asked God to contain the disease in my breast and let it not go anywhere else. During surgery, 17 lymph nodes were removed for testing and the results came back negative! I am praising God for his mercy, love, faithfulness and kindness towards me. No matter what your situation may be, please put your faith and trust in God. He is the same God who parted the Red Sea for Moses and the children of Israel. He never changes. He is a God who specialises in the impossible.”
