EDITORIAL “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25 What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word ‘generosity’? Many of us are inclined to first link generosity with finance and yet, there are so many other ways in which we can be generous! I looked up the word ‘generosity’ in the dictionary, and the definition I found was: “the quality of being kind and generous”. Some synonyms for generosity are: lavishness, open-handedness, unselfishness, nobility, honour, goodness, self-sacrifice, richness and big-heartedness. Doesn’t that open up a whole new meaning of the word ‘generous’? The Bible speaks in many places about what it means to be generous. We read in Acts 4:32-35 how the believers were united in heart and mind, feeling that what they owned was not their own. As a result they shared everything together and there was no lack. Ultimately, we look to Jesus who shared everything He had with those in need. He gave His time, His encouraging words, His wisdom, His love and eventually, His life. Jesus says in Matthew 25:40: ‘‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!” When you decide in your heart to bless someone else, it pleases the Lord’s heart! Let’s redefine generosity in our minds as we ask the Lord to show us ways in which we can be a blessing to others – mirroring His generosity towards us! We also want to use this opportunity to thank you for your generosity as you stand with us to touch lives around the world! Together we are sharing His heart to the nations, bringing a blessing to so many!

TEACHING

THE GENEROSITY OF GOD An interesting proverb is found in Isaiah 32:8: “A generous man devises generous things, and by generosity he shall stand.” It’s wonderful for people to be known for their generosity. The generosity of God is described in John 3:16, where it says, “God so loved the world that He gave.” God is generous and He plans generous acts. We see this in the story of the poor widow who tells Elisha she has nothing but a jar of oil. He answers, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few” (2 Kings 4:3). It’s a step of faith for her to scour the neighborhood for empty vessels. When she obeyed, a miracle occurred. She poured out the oil, filling all the empty jars. If we are expecting God to do a miracle, He is expecting us to do our part, to have the faith to build the vessels for Him to fill. I love to tell the story of CBN’s first bank account. My father had filed the articles of incorporation for CBN, although he had virtually nothing. He wanted to have a vessel for God to fill—such as a bank account. He went to a bank near the TV station that God had told him to claim in Portsmouth, Virginia. After he filled out the forms and picked out the checks, the clerk told him, “It’s customary to make an initial deposit.” He only had $3.25 in his pocket, and he knew he needed a quarter

04

to pay the toll home—so he gave her the three wrinkled dollar bills. Smiling sweetly, she said, “The checks cost $6.” Dad quickly asked, “Can I have that on account?” For some reason, she agreed. As I look at CBN’s ministry today, I see how much has come from that negative $3 deposit! Each of us should build vessels for God to fill in our lives, our personal finances, and what we want from God for the future. When we start with so little, He gets all the glory. He is the one who calls us, saves us, inspires us, enables us, and provides for us. The most precious thing we have is time, and the best way to invest it is to preach the Gospel to every nation, tribe and tongue. We should want to spend our time on things that will lead to great joy in Heaven. Isaiah 61:11 promises, As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. Some plant while others water or weed, but it is always God who gives the increase. God bless you.

WHY CHRISTIANS GIVE? Start by reading 2 Corinthians 9:7 Generosity is one of the great evidences of being a Christian. We give because we have been given more than we deserve. Christ himself — our Saviour, Lord and greatest treasure — demonstrated the greatest act of generosity in coming to save us. In 2 Corinthians 9:7 it says that “God loves a cheerful giver,” which means that we need to give from a heart that wants to share things. Something needs to happen in our hearts so that the basic desire is now to give and share as much as possible instead of keeping as much as possible for ourselves.

Gordon Robertson, Chief Executive Officer

“Each of us should build vessels for God to fill in our lives, our personal finances, and what we want from God for the future.”

Scripture is quoted from the NKJV. This teaching was given during a CBN staff chapel.

CBN STORY

ENDING YOUR FINANCIAL FEARS Haydon & Philippa Druce were struggling financially. They live on Jersey Island, which is located in the English Channel. Haydon was unemployed for five long months. They couldn’t pay the rent. Sometimes people brought them groceries. There were days when Hayden was afraid to open the fridge. The couple found themselves thousands of pounds in debt and had to use credit cards and borrow money from family members to pay the bills. At one point, Haydon started his own building and renovation business but things were slow. Philippa looked, but couldn’t find a job. It was then they started listening to teaching about finances on The 700 Club. “And I remember hearing Pat talk about when you sow a seed God promises to give back to you far more than what you give to him. So I decided to sow a seed,” said Philippa. They joined The 700 Club online. Soon after, Philippa got a job! In her first year with the company she was promoted three times! She also had three pay raises which increased her salary by 30 percent! Haydon noticed that his business started to take off too! This was only as he obeyed God with their giving. “Sometimes I would pay the bills first and the tithe wasn’t paid first. But nothing seemed to break for me and it wasn’t until I got the revelation that hey, put the Lord first and the breakthrough will come!” he said. As he did that, Haydon saw his business grow! Haydon and Philippa were able to pay off their debts and are no longer afraid to open the fridge! “When you give to God He finds a way to give back to you and it’s always more than you ever can give to him,” said Philippa. “Keep doing it and pressing through and trusting God for that breakthrough to come,” added Haydon.

“Put the Lord first and the breakthrough will come.”

DEVOTION

A RHYTHM OF GENEROSITY It’s easy to be generous when there’s no lack in our own lives but what do we do when God asks us to be generous when we don’t have lots of time, money or energy at our disposal? It would be wonderful to think that all Christians give even in their own hour of need but the reality is very few of us do.

Naomi Downes, Superbook Schools Team

“Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” *

CBN READ Our daily blog is here to encourage you in all different aspects of life. Faith, parenting, family, culture, purpose, lifestyle and much more! Visit cbneurope.com/read.

Why is being generous at the top of God’s priority list? The first commandment is to love God and love others. God doesn’t specify a time or a place to be generous. He requires generosity from us at all times. Quite simply, God wants us to think beyond ourselves. Let me ask you, when was the last time you were generous? I mean, generous in the way that it cost you something. Generous in a way that required you to trust God? It’s important that our hearts are always in check. It’s easy to buy someone a coffee and think that we’ve done our good deed for the day but generosity should be a posture of our heart not only an action. Our desires as Christians should always become more Christ-like. Generosity is evidently a facet of God’s character and so it should be at the forefront of our minds. I can recall countless times when people have been generous towards me and it’s something you never forget. Why, because an act of selflessness displays God’s heart for mankind. How many times do we say as Christians “I just want to be closer to God!” I don’t often stop and think that if I display His character, i.e generosity, I will become closer to Him. Being generous will do just that! It’s inevitable. Displaying His character helps us to understand His heart! I believe God wants us to form a rhythm of generosity in our own lives where it almost becomes second nature to see and respond to the needs of those around us. * Scripture is quoted from Proverbs 11:25 ESV.

GLOBAL IMPACT

TRANSFORMING A GENERATION

In today’s modern media-world, CBN partners are sending Superbook around the globe. At the end of 2016, the new Superbook was in 93 countries in 50 languages. By using today’s technology and advanced animation, CBN’s state-ofthe-art Superbook series will introduce entire cultures to a God they’ve never met—one life at a time! Let these stories of God’s transforming love touch your heart:

10

Chovoin, The Little Cambodian Girl

Her father was drunk again. Chovoin sat under a tree in the yard, terrifed and in tears. She knew better than to go inside. The shattered glass strewn across the lawn, and her mother’s screams, laid bare their family story. But after Chovoin saw Superbook: “A Giant Adventure,” a miracle began to unfold. Impressed by David’s faith and courage, she asked Jesus to forgive her sins. Holy boldness filled her 12-year-old heart and she believed that God would free her father from alcohol. She prayed, confronted him, and began taking her Buddhist family to church. They were introduced to many powerful Superbook episodes. The entire family prayed for salvation and today Chovoin’s father is a new man—loving, kind and sober!

Allison, The Evangelist

Nine-year-old Allison had never seen such joy before her first visit to a ministry supported by CBN’s Orphan’s Promise. There, she watched the Superbook episode, “He Is Risen!” Moved to tears, she surrendered her life to the Lord. “It felt like Jesus was holding me,” she shared. Within one month, her mother and several friends prayed for salvation!

Viviane, From Rebellious To Redeemed

She was only 11, but anger and rebellion raged within this little girl from West Africa. Viviane hated school, skipped class and started fights. One day, a friend invited her to a Superbook Club, where she watched Superbook. Viviane’s attitude began to change and as a result, her mother soon received salvation. Today, Viviane is obedient, respectful, and at the top of her class! You are helping reach children around the world with the love of God. Superbook is teaching today’s media-savvy children, and their loved ones, powerful Biblical truth. Your steadfast support is making an eternal difference in their lives.

HELPING LIKE JESUS DID Fen remembers hopscotching with her older brother Jun. “My brother was always better than anyone else at hopscotch,” says Fen. “But a lot of times, he still let me win!” One day, Jun slipped and hurt his leg. Since the Tao family are migrant workers who make less than £35 a month, they couldn’t afford proper medical care for Jun. Jun ultimately lost feeling in his left limb. He remembers with pain, “It was like my leg didn’t even exist anymore. It wouldn’t listen to me and I just fell down.” So when some flames caught his foot on fire, he didn’t notice a thing until one third of it had been severely burned. Without correct attention, he got an infection that deformed his foot and made his leg worse. Mrs. Tao shares, “I said to my family, ‘Let’s trust the Lord!’ I prayed, ‘Jesus, You are almighty. Please help my son.’”

12

Then a pastor told CBN about Jun. We provided surgery to treat his burn, infection, and withered leg. We covered the cost of injections to help his nerves and muscles grow, and we paid for an operation through which doctors treated his nerve problem so he could feel again. Finally, we provided corrective surgery for his leg. “I’ll never forget when the doctor said Jun was finally better,” Mr. Tao exclaims. Through the process, Jun and his sister prayed to become Christians. Jun says, “Jesus is the one who made this all possible. Without Him and CBN, I’d never be able to walk again. Or hopscotch with my sister!” Fen concludes, “CBN reminds me of Jesus. Because Jesus helped people and you helped my brother!”

GLOBAL IMPACT

LOOK AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING AROUND THE WORLD: WEST AFRICA Through our CBN centres, over 28,900 people heard the Gospel in 83 evangelistic outreaches. Also, the prayer centers in Nigeria and Ghana responded to more than 12,250 calls, emails, letters, and text messages. In addition, CBN built fresh water wells in 54 rural communities in Nigeria and Ghana, beneffting roughly 46,100 people.

EAST AFRICA would be like if I lost them, too,” says Habiba.

Habiba has to walk 5 miles to get water from a dirty river to cook for her family. Every time one of Habiba’s children got sick, she was afraid the baby would die of cholera, like her first child did. “I remember playing with my sons one afternoon and wondering what my life

When we heard about Habiba’s family and all the others suffering from cholera, CBN dug a well in the centre of their village. Our medical team went there, too, and treated everyone with waterborne infections. “Our children will not die of cholera anymore. And the well is so close, I don’t have to walk far to enjoy this gift,” says Habiba. “Thank you. The water washed away my tears, and gave me hope.”

ASIA The Li family couldn’t afford a cistern, so the kids rarely bathed. Their mother couldn’t wash their clothes, and the family had little water with which to drink or cook. For a while, Mr. Li dug holes in the ground and drew water from pools and ponds - but it was scarce and often had dead animals in it. CBN built the family a cistern that brings clean water straight to their home. We also gave them a water filter.

PHILIPPINES CBN responded to super typhoon Lawin (Haima) by distributing relief packs to more than 13,900 people. We also provided over 1,000 people with general healthcare services.

FEATURED

THE JOY OF GENEROSITY Have you ever received an unexpected gift or has a complete stranger ever come up to you and done a good deed for you – without asking for anything in return? If you have, you would

“Freely you have received; freely give.” Matthew 10:8

14

have either experienced a wonderful, heartwarming feeling, or maybe like me, you would have looked for the catch or the reason behind it. A couple of years ago, my mother was at the till of an upmarket supermarket, getting a few ‘special treats’ for a family gathering. When it was her turn to pay, the cashier presented her with some vouchers! The lady in front of my mum, quietly asked the cashier to slip them to the lady behind her as a surprise! What a wonderful gesture, I don’t have to tell you that my mother

was tickled pink! She told all her friends about it and I’m sure the cashier told her colleagues and family about the wonderful thing that happened at work that day, all without that kind lady ever knowing just how many people could have been influenced by her act of generosity. There are numerous examples of acts of generosity all around us and it may surprise you to hear that these are by no means restricted to just Christians! However, being generous is, or should be a fundamental part

15

FEATURED of our nature as followers of Christ. We are all familiar with the words of Jesus in Matthew 10 when He was sending the disciples out on their own with His authority to acting on His behalf, “freely you have received, freely give!” (v.9). It’s almost as if Jesus is directly ordering his disciples to be generous with their faith. He even warns them not to expect anything in return, going as far as to say that not everyone would welcome their generous message, to not be put off but, to continue on regardless (v14). Luke’s Gospel records the disciples return and it’s no exaggeration to say that they were buzzing with excitement! They were so full of joy about all of the things that they could do in Jesus’ name and the change they saw in people’s lives as a result (Luke 10:17). This is truly awesome! God’s generosity towards us is something to celebrate! However, as Jesus pointed out to the disciples the greatest

16

“Weʼre to be generous because of all that Christ has done for us, because of who we now are in Him.” celebration is reserved for salvation, when a person’s “name is written in Heaven.” v.18. As a result it it this generous nature within us as followers of Christ that we should celebrate. It is this that sets us apart, this is what should be our motivation and reason behind our acts of generosity – our faith in Christ. It’s an act of service towards God and not something birthed out of a need of

FEATURED recognition or self-satisfaction or reward. We’re to be generous because of all that Christ has done for us, because of who we now are in Him, and most of all because “our names are written in heaven”. We are to be supernaturally, naturally generous – and be happy doing it! The Church in Philippi, the first church Paul planted in Europe, knew this all too well. There was a cost to their generosity as they eagerly ‘shared in my (Paul’s) troubles’. (Phil 4:14-20). Yet, out of a real spirit of generosity, they enabled Paul to continue to spread God’s message of salvation into the Roman Empire and from there out to the rest of the world. It was this type of generosity that was birthed out of the joy of thankful hearts of the ordinary men and women in the Church at Philippi this enabled the message of salvation to be spread throughout the known world. Their main reward and joy was summed up by Paul when he called them true ‘partners in the gospel’, fulfilling Jesus’ great commission. It’s relatively easy to join in the modern trend of doing a random act of kindness to a stranger. And it’s true that these are often accompanied by genuine feelings of satisfaction and joy. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to go further. Our generosity is not just an ‘act’, but it is very much part of our nature and part of our overall call to share the Good News to the entire world and all its peoples. A spirit of generosity not only reveals itself in our actions but it shows itself in our thoughts towards those to whom we want to reach too. Our spirit of generosity is not just limited by financial giving, but it is revealed through our words, thoughts and actions towards others. We can be generous by choosing a message of hope over one of judgement and pursuing a path that insists on love rather than just being right. Whatever we do, in word or action, let’s make sure we do it with a real spirit of generosity and then join in the eternal joy of the Lord. These acts of generosity, driven by the Holy Spirit, will reveal to their recipients our motivation - the Lord Jesus Christ.

Richard Sanders, CBN Prayer Manager

“Our generosity is not just an ʻactʼ, but it is very much part of our nature and part of our overall call to share the good news to the entire world and all its peoples.”

LISTENING TO GOD Why are we tempted to doubt God for the future when he has so wonderfully and miraculously provided for us in the past? Take Exodus 17 for example. God had miraculously set the Israelites free from captivity in Egypt; and brought them through the Red Sea. God had provided Manna for them to eat, but as they camped at Rephidim, they feared dying of thirst. Again, God miraculously provided. He told Moses to take his staff and ‘strike the rock.’ Moses obeyed God and water flowed out for the people to drink. By Numbers 20, they were back near Rephidim and the people once more feared dying of thirst. This time God told Moses to ‘speak to that rock.’ But Moses thought that he knew better. He had done this before and assumed he could just do the same thing again. So, Moses struck the rock. God did bring forth water to provide for His people, but he then told Moses that, because of his lack of trust, he would not go into the Promised Land. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. The mission of reaching people with the Gospel will stay the same, until the Lord returns. But exactly how this unchanging God calls us to carry out that unchanging mission will often be new and different – because God wants us to stay close and listen to Him. That applies to all of the CBN team as they serve God in new ways, it also applies to those who make this possible through their financial support. I am praying that many people will find that God calls them to make a special gift at this time. In particular, regarding the Superbook Schools initiative which brings the Bible to a whole new generation of primary school pupils. It costs £5,000 to create each large media-rich unit of school assemblies and lessons, and we need to create 12 more units so that there is one for each term of each primary school year. I am praying that God will surprise us by calling many supporters to make a special gift to cover these costs.

Nick Pollard, Ethos Education

On the very day that the CBN sign was fixed on the wall of our new offices, Nick Pollard, our ministry partner from Ethos Education, visited us. Here he shares a message with us to inspire our friends and supporters to join with us in listening to God as we move forward in this ministry. CBN has partnered with Ethos Education to create resources for UK primary schools, meeting core curriculum requirements for many subjects, including Religious Education. Please pray with us that many schools will start using these and help us spread the word! For more information visit www. superbookschools.org.

INTERVIEW

BETHANY WILLIAMS

Bethany Williams is the founder of Exile International, an organisation that exists to restore Africa’s former child soldiers and children orphaned by war. She shares how her own emotional healing led her into the lives of child survivors of war.

THE COLOR OF GRACE

Interview from The 700 Club

God used a deep loss in your life and what you considered a failure to tenderize your heart towards the need of others. How did you get help in that difficult time of your life? At the time of my life I was full of shame. Being a counselor, I was supposed to be the one with all the answers, I understood that when my level of desperation was bigger than my fear of embarrassment, then true healing started to happen. After you asked for help, you got treated and you heard a man speak and it changed your life. In the last Sunday of my treatment, I walked to a 20

The Color of Grace shares Bethany’s own journey through depression, trauma and disappointment and how God used her healing process to lead her into the lives of rescued child soldiers and children orphaned by war. It was by meeting these children, and her eyes being opened to the evil they had experienced, that her spiritual journey was turned upside down. Available at www. exileinternational.org.

INTERVIEW church and heard a man speaking. He had an african accent and was taking about his pain surviving the Rwandan genocide. From this pain he founded an organisation that deals with reconciliation and trauma. After listening to him, I wanted to know what happened to the children in the war and if there was anything to help with trauma to these kids. Two years later, I actually went on a trip to Congo with the same organisation. It totally broke my heart. Three weeks after I returned, Exile International was founded. I think we all have heard stories about the child soldiers, victims of rebels and how much despair they witness. How was it going to Congo and seeing this with your own eyes? Reality hit me in the face. Child soldiers asked me to be their mothers, I played with girls who were raped as young as three year-old. So, it wasn’t just a story anymore, something I saw in the news. Those were real children, who had faces, who had names. And most of them had been orphaned because of the war. You are helping the children to surrender their pain and their dreams to God through their drawings. When you see them drawing dead bodies, guns and burning huts, then you realise that is what is trapped in their minds - the war. And when they draw God in the middle it is very powerful for them, because they are able to remember: ‘No, God didn’t leave me! When I was being raped in the bush, when I was forced to kill my

TESTIMONY Cas called our Prayer Centre a while ago and our team gave her a scripture: ‘The footsteps of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord’. She called back to share a testimony with us. Cas locked her keys in the boot of her car and had no access to her flat, no phone and no money. She had no-one in the community she could reach out to. It seemed to be an impossible situation! Not knowing what to do, she felt the Holy Spirit say to her that Bible verse. God directed her to a man on the street who turned out to be a locksmith. He couldn’t help her immediately but he gave her his mobile number. Later, God directed Cas to a lady who allowed her to use her mobile phone and she was able to call the locksmith who helped her open the boot and retrieve her keys. Cas was so encouraged by this situation and was reassured that God is always with her and always guiding her.
