Peace And Comfort In God Superbook In Ukraine

PO Box 700, Hereford, UK, HR1 9EW. 0300 561 0700 (UK) 01513 3738 (ROI) +44 207 101 7045 (International)

EDITORIAL This month we stand still at the cross, reflecting on the significance of what Jesus did for us. The Bible gives us detailed accounts of His life, death and resurrection, even before Jesus came into this world, God told us about the coming of His Son, taking away the sin of the world and proclaiming freedom to the captives. In Isaiah 7:14 the Lord announced that ‘the virgin will give birth to a son and will call Him Emmanuel (which means God with us). In Isaiah 11:10 the Lord wrote that ‘the heir to David’s throne will be a banner of salvation to the world’. God also foretold Jesus’ betrayal by Judas. In Psalm 41:9 it is written: “Even my best friend, the one I trusted completely, the one who shared my food, has turned against me”. As we know the story of how Judas betrayed Jesus, this is another prophecy that sadly had to come true. In Psalm 22 the Lord gives us insight in His suffering with a very poignant prophecy in verse 16b: “They have pierced my hands and feet”, and in verse 18: “They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing.” There are hundreds of prophecies in the Bible that tell us about Jesus, and how He has fulfilled most of them, including his resurrection and victory over death. Jesus Himself told the Jewish leaders of his resurrection, when he said: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up”. Jesus spoke about his own body being destroyed but resurrected from death in three days. “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.” Romans 8:11. Let us live in the power of His resurrection – sharing the Good News of His victory to bring freedom to those around us – this Easter season!

TEACHING

NEW LIFE IN CHRIST The Jewish calendar has a period of time called Teshuvah, meaning “to turn,” in the last month of the year, Elul, which means “search.” The purpose is for people to turn to God and search their hearts in preparation for the Day of Atonement. They ask themselves, “Am I ready to die?” This is reflected in their clothing for the day. Every married Jewish male wears a kittel, a white linen robe that eventually serves as their burial shroud. The robe has no pockets, symbolizing that nothing can be taken along on that journey. It’s a dress rehearsal for death. Remember that Jesus is Jewish, and He prepared Himself to die. The good news is that when Jesus wore His burial shroud, He left it in a tomb and is raised forevermore. And, because He lives, we have this wonderful promise in Colossians 2:12: You also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. Are we ready to walk into the goodness and provision of God? Sometimes it’s easy to allow bitterness, complaining and anxiety to build up, robbing us of our joy. The more we are asleep to our disobedience, the more we drift away from God without even realising it. We need to wake up into the newness of life He has for us. That’s why it is important to examine ourselves to see where we fall short, to ask God to forgive us and set us free. He is merciful and gracious, and He wants to bring us into the Promised Land.

04

Start by remembering that He loves you. Song of Songs 6:3 says, I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine. You don’t have to beg Him; He wants you to succeed, and He is in your corner. Meditate on God’s attributes in Exodus 34:6-7: “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” Search your heart for anything that is keeping you from wholeheartedly pursuing the promises God has for you. For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise (Psalm 51:16-17). We need to guard against complacency by asking ourselves, “Am I right with God? Am I ready to meet Him? Am I fully appreciating the salvation that Jesus paid that price for?” This brings a whole new appreciation of what Jesus did for us in the Garden of Gethsemane, on the cross, and in the resurrection. You get a different perspective on life when facing death. I experienced that firsthand when I nearly died of cerebral malaria in Manila. In that time, the things you used to think were important don’t matter at all. It’s just you and God. In 2 Corinthians 1:8-9, Paul shared what he learned while facing death: We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead (NLT). He expected to die—and as a result, he learned to rely on God, for He will raise us. When we go through hardships, our reaction should be, “This is great because it means God is going to be glorified. He will see me through this and I am going to learn how great He is.” Jesus came to give you abundant life. In Him, we have new life. No matter what we go through, we can rely on Him. Our hope is in the One who raises the dead.

Gordon Robertson, Chief Executive Officer

“The more we are asleep to our disobedience, the more we drift away from God without even realising it.”

Scripture is quoted from the NKJV except as noted.

ORPHANʼS PROMISE: HOPE FOR VULNERABLE CHILDREN From Orphanʼs Promise UK Coordinator, Jasmina Devink

If you are familiar with CBN ministries you are probably also familiar with the work we do through Orphan’s Promise. Through OP we want to serve orphaned and vulnerable children around the world, bringing them from being at risk through to thriving. We do this by not only meeting their practical needs like food, housing and education but also their emotional and spiritual needs. We create a good environment for them to grow up in, surrounding them with love and teaching about Jesus. 2016 has been an amazing year for OP. We have seen God provide in miraculous ways. Children rescued from the war zone in Ukraine, orphans finding a warm home in Ghana, mothers and their children rescued from human trafficking in Peru. The list goes on 06

and on. A highlight for us was to see the SEED project in Ukraine grow and succeed after our christmas campaign. We are currently active in 14 poor Gypsy communities, providing them with the tools they need to work in the land, earning an income for their families. We have even bigger plans for 2017. We are looking into how we can partner with local organisations and churches to grow further and even serve the vulnerable children in our own country. We want to take you with us on our Godadventure! Thank you for supporting Orphan’s Promise through your prayers and financial support! To find out more how you can support our projects, call us or visit our website at www. orphanspromise.org.uk.

CBN STORY

PLEADING TURNS TO PRAISE Stephen and Aimee were expecting their first child, a baby girl. There was a complication with the pregnancy and doctors put Aimee on bed rest for a month. Then on the 33rd week, Aimee’s condition got worse and labour was induced—and little Ella was born. Ella was too fragile to be held, doctors determined she was losing oxygen and diagnosed her with pulmonary hypertension. Aimee and Stephen called upon family and friends to come to the hospital to pray. “I got by myself in the parking lot of the hospital. I remember yelling out to God ‘What am I supposed to do? I’m helpless.’ God said, “Believe”. I remember thinking, Believe what? And loud and clear, “Believe that you will bring Ella home alive and well,”” said Stephen. Surrounded by a praying family, Ella survived a second night. But that morning, doctors said they had run out of options. They allowed Aimee and Stephen to hold Ella for the first time, so that they could say their goodbyes. Again, they turned to prayer but instead of pleading with God, Aimee’s father suggested they praise Him. “Praise You. You’re an awesome God. You’re a miraculous God. You love us unconditionally. And as I said that, my faith started to rise again. I kept to that promise He had given us. Thank you. She’s coming home alive and well,” said Aimee. And then Ella’s eyes opened. Ella’s health began to improve and she was released from the hospital. Today she has no disabilities and her development is right on track. “A baby who went through what Ella went through would normally, if they survived, have numerous deficits, maybe need a wheelchair, not be able to even talk or would have a lot of disabilities. But Ella has none. I credit it to the power of prayer,” said Nurse McFadden.

“Jesus raised people from the dead and healed their sicknesses; He still does it today.” 07

THE CALVARY CONNECTION In Matthew 6:10 Jesus teaches us to pray: ‘Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven’.

Though we all can experience extreme trials and troubles, it is at Easter that our prayers for ‘Heaven to come to Earth’ should be more passionate. Prayers, that in a current world of violence, Jesus would bring peace. In a world of injustice, Jesus would bring justice. In a world of arrogance, Jesus would teach us humility. In a world of oppression, Jesus would bring freedom. In a world of illness and disease, Jesus would bring healing and wholeness. And in a world of hate and tension, Jesus would teach us to love, as He first loved us. It is through Jesus that Heaven has come to us. At the cross, the veil was torn, representing that the presence of God (Heaven) and us (Earth) are no longer separate. Emmanuel. God with us. The Kingdom of God here on Earth. Through Calvary, the place where Jesus was crucified, Heaven and Earth are permanently connected – yet still incomplete until Jesus returns. Likewise our relationship to God has been reconciled even though we are not perfect. Now there are no barriers, we can find true life and love. We can find healing and have eternal life through salvation. This is our great hope that we can live in now, as it says in Mark 1:15: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” May Easter be filled with the knowledge that Jesus Christ is the answer. That the Holy Spirit is at work in your life and in the lives of those around you. We now have access to our Father in Heaven, and through prayer and faith we will be able to see God’s will being done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

VISITING REFUGEE CAMPS From CBN Balkan Director, Vanja Bule

Greece was once synonymous with ancient history, many famous mediterranean dishes and a popular holiday location. Now though it is a picture of thousands seeking refuge in the face of war and suffering. In February, CBN visited these refugee camps, connecting with the local people and other ministry partners.

10

CBN partner, pastor Pavlos from Apostolic Church in Thessaloniki shared his concerns with us about the ever changing refugee crisis in Balkan. This winter was one of the harshest and in some places conditions were brutal. Currently UNHCR and the government are moving everyone from tents, to accommodate them in hotels and camps with containers. However this is a short term solution, and there is still a great need. Through its partners, CBN is seeking to bring a lasting difference, one person at a time. Stefanos who is in charge of the warehouses and distribution of clothes and food, shared: “We could not go to the fish but God brought fish to us.” Stefano and his team have been loving these refugees without fully knowing their language. Meeting their needs with the food parcels, items of clothing, a hug and often times of prayer. Every Friday they run a discipleship programme, “Al Mazeera,” where they sing worship songs in Arabic and spend time together. “Al Mazeera,” we are told, means ‘the journey” and on a journey they truly are. We also met up with a CBN partner called Chris Dakas and his wife. They run “House of Hope”, a place where they accommodate and support pregnant refugee mothers, and those with newborn babies. We were introduced to a few that found a safe haven when they needed it the most. What I kept hearing the most from the people on the ground is that “this is a honour” for us. As we looked into all the ways we could help, we realised that we can’t continue to visit the camps, deliver parcels and discipleship programmes ourselves. However, we can partner with those who are doing all of that. We consider it an honour to support those on the ground with our prayers, materials like Superbook in Arabic, time and resources. Will you help us do that?

THANK YOU CBN PARTNERS! Your support enables us to share the Gospel around the world and bring humanitarian aid and relief to those in need. To help us further, please visit www.cbneurope.com or call our team on 0300 561 0700 (UK).

GLOBAL IMPACT

AN ANSWER TO PRAYER Pastor Balkar worked part-time on a dairy farm in northern India, barely making enough money to provide for his wife and two sons. Many times they had to beg for food. His nine-year-old son, Arpan, knew they desperately needed help. “We couldn’t pay our school fees. We would borrow clothes from others and wear them to school. And we never had enough food to eat.” said Arpan. “We used to sit down and pray together. We had hope that one day God would deliver us from our struggles and answer our prayers,” said Pastor Balkar. A local minister, who partners with CBN, told us about Balkar’s need. Since Balkar had the skills to run a dairy farm, we gave him ten cows and a stable. “When I saw the cows for the first time, I was very happy,” Arpan exclaimed. “I 12

ran to the stable where the cows were. I couldn’t control my joy!” Arpan loved that the farm was named after him. Today, it produces 400 gallons of milk each month. Balkar hired workers from his community and he’s using some of the profits to build a bigger church and support other local pastors. “Now I am able to feed my family and take care of all of their needs,” Balkar said. “My sons are able to pay their school fees and buy their school books and supplies.” “This is really a miracle from Jesus! We are very happy,” Arpan said with a big smile. “We are able to drink two or three glasses of milk every day. It’s so yummy and sweet! I really thank God and all of you who helped us by giving us the cows!”

NIGERIA

Elijah loves playing soccer with his friends in Nigeria—but villagers began dumping garbage near their playing field. Soon, it became a breeding ground for disease. As a result, Elijah contracted malaria from a mosquito bite, which resulted in a fever and seizures.

Terrified, his mother recalled, “I kept calling his name, but … he didn’t respond.” Thanks to generous partners, a CBN clinic was nearby. Our medical team administered treatment, and he began to recover. The staff in Nigeria provided food and enrolled his mother in our sewing classes. Finally, members from our local office cleaned up the garbage to prevent future illness. Elijah’s mother exclaimed, “You have truly changed our lives!”

UKRAINE Katya’s 1-year-old daughter Bogdana suffered burns on 30 percent of her body and needed immediate surgery. Medical treatment was costly and Katya was a young single mother with no relatives, and no money. Thankfully, the doctor contacted CBN’s Orphan’s Promise, and caring partners provided for the child’s operation and other procedures to prevent infections and scarring.

COSTA RICA Orphan’s Promise provided more than 23,000 meals for children living in poverty across Los Girasoles, Nicoya, La Carpio, Cabagra, Limoncito, and Hogar Fe Viva.

JESUS UNLEASHED Jesus is alive! He is living with us today. Our surroundings, experiences and relationship with God shows us this. As followers of Jesus we are eternally blessed to see miracles, and receive love

from our Father. But why then do we sometimes go looking in the wrong places for this? I have been guilty in the past of only looking for God in church, like a building could contain Him! Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene made the same mistake of trying to contain Jesus to a space the tomb. It was here where the angels questioned them on this. They asked: “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” (Luke 24:5) This is the only circumstance in which

this question could be asked; we wouldn’t be trying to find a friend in a morgue. But Jesus had explained on numerous occasions that, “the Son of Man … must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” (Luke 9:22). Therefore the question had to be asked, what are you doing here? In the same way that Jesus couldn’t be contained in the tomb, we cannot contain Him today. Easter is an annual celebration. Whether you just celebrate by eating

15

FEATURED pancakes or buying an easter egg, you’re partaking in the festivities. There will be many vicars, pastors and congregations happy to see new people step foot in church at least once a year. That is a great opportunity to introduce Jesus into their life but are we, as God’s people, showing visitors that our Church and our celebration isn’t just on a Sunday Morning? Is this a daily expression of your life? Do you allow Jesus to shape your life everywhere you go? Did you know that 80 million chocolate Easter eggs are sold each year? This accounts for 10% of Britain’s annual spending on chocolate! There is a range of ideas over what an Easter egg symbolises, but I always see it as the Tomb. The interesting thing about these eggs is that they’re empty although there’s numerous times I’ve wished for them not be, but rather to be filled with luxurious sweets and treats, but this isn’t the case.

16

“Jesus is alive! He is living with us today. Our surroundings, experiences and relationship with God shows us this.”

A quote from Sam Morris puts this into context: “The tomb of Christ is famous because of what it does not contain.” So where are you finding Him? You may not be looking amongst the tombs, cemeteries or grave stones, but are you containing Him? The angels tell the women next that “He is not here; He has risen!” (Luke 24:6)

FEATURED This is a game changer! Understanding this gives our life a completely new perspective, it’s life changing! The resurrection defeated evil and death to the final victory, created a life for us where our sufferings are only temporary and our life is eternal. Therefore resurrection is fundamental to our faith. This truth should be impacting us daily, not just at church or around other Christians. This selfless act released Jesus to anyone, anytime, anywhere; to you! So, how can we get this to impact us daily? Firstly by taking up your cross (Matthew 16:24). Having your own personal journey with God is very exciting, but it requires us to let go of the things of this world and dedicate every moment to God. To step into the opportunities and challenges that come our way. And this is a conscious decision we need to make every day. Secondly by preaching the Gospel to everyone (Mark 16:15). Spreading the Good News! God’s gift to us is salvation and we have the task to offer this to all of humanity. This can seem daunting but really it’s the most precious, wonderful and powerful thing we can be part of. Keep making the effort to share with those around you, at work, at home, on the bus - you never know who you may be able to introduce to Jesus! Thirdly, rejoice in suffering (Romans 5:3). Jesus has defeated death, he has broken the barriers between heaven and earth; and He continues to want a relationship with us. Let’s break out of the habit of complaining and requesting more. Jesus has already provided the ultimate sacrifice, this is all that we need and what we should be focused on.

Samantha Burgoyne, CBN Prayer Team

“Donʼt contain Jesus to your half an hour bible study or Sunday mornings but release Him for all to see.”

It’s time for us to apply this to our lives; to read our Bible daily, to pray constantly, to take opportunities to tell people about Jesus, and to listen to the Holy Spirit always. Don’t contain Jesus to your half an hour bible study or Sunday mornings but release Him for all to see.

FINDING PEACE AND COMFORT IN GOD

SEEKING GOD

Nikita was just 10 years old when the war in Ukraine took his father’s life and soon after, his mother went missing, presumed to be dead. His grandparents took him in, but his life was deeply affected by the loss of his parents. His grandmother recalled, “He began to have nightmares so severe that he screamed, and ran out into the night.” Nikita’s schoolwork also suffered, and he was always afraid. One day, his grandmother heard that CBN’s Orphan’s Promise was hosting summer camps for children traumatized by the war, so she enrolled Nikita. Nikita watched Superbook episodes and was inspired to pray that God would set him free from his nightmares and fears. Nikita says, “God answered my prayers!” He now sleeps peacefully, and does well in school. Best of all, his grandparents also became Christians! His grandmother says, “God healed and changed Nikita—and all of us, too. Thank you!”

In the new episode “Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream,” Superbook takes the kids back to Babylon to meet Daniel in the palace. He faces death unless God reveals to him the meaning of the king’s dream. God answers Daniel’s prayer and the king richly rewards Daniel. The children are inspired by Daniel’s example to seek God in prayer for the solution to their problems. INTERVIEW

DAVID STINE

Interview from The 700 Club

How did God first speak to you about His desires for you to establish a multicultural church in DC (US)? I was at a doctoral retreat with Regent University in 2005 and the moderator of the retreat asked us to get alone in the woods and have some time with God. I found myself at my knees clearing the soil and the dirt, I felt that God was telling me to make 17 holes in the ground. I heard this still small voice saying “Look down and count. These are the 17 locations in the DC area that you are going to plant, and three in NYC.” I was just blown away, I had to check with many people to make sure I wasn’t just losing my mind in there, but at the same time it was really in line with what I was feeling I was being called to. And now I had a vision. I think everybody would like to hear from God and God likes to communicate with us, so why is it often so difficult to bring those two components 20

David Stine is Lead Pastor of Metro Church. He is known for his practical biblical teaching, visionary leadership, and his heart for impacting metropolitan areas with the Gospel. He says once we get the word of God in us, we can truly hear His voice.

HEARING FROM GOD In Hearing from God, David presents a fivestep process designed specifically to help Christians grow in their ability to listen for and better recognize God’s voice. This Scripture-based guide includes a 40-day devotional with Bible passages, questions for reflection, ideas for personal worship, and space for two-way journaling—everything you need to receive God’s message to you. Available at Amazon.co.uk

INTERVIEW together? I think first is knowing that God wants to speak. Jesus says in John 10:27: ‘My sheep listen to My voice, I know them and they follow Me’. After I understood this, it then just became a process of figuring out what was the best method for me to position myself everyday, not just to point my life towards the Bible, but to literally point my life in the direction of Scripiture and to hear His voice in order to follow Him everyday. How did you use scientific method as a basis to establish a method to listen from God? In our world today scientists are discovering the depths of the natural. I had this moment when I was writing the book where I asked myself ‘Who is out there researching the depths of the supernatural?’ And I thought I am a pastor, it has to be a part of my role. There is so much more supernatural that there is natural. So I started with the question ‘How do we hear from God?’ When you were 14 you had a very serious health issue and God spoke to you through your grandfather. I think it was when I realised that God really wanted to speak. I was diagnosed with terminal leukemia. I was given 6 months left to live and the doctors couldn’t figure it out. My grandfather called me one day and said ‘David, the Lord gave me a vision’. I wasn’t a follower of Christ at that time so I was all ears. He had this beautiful vision. He said: ‘I saw you in that hospital bed and

“I asked myself ʻWho is out there researching the dephts of the supernatural?ʼ And I thought I am a pastor, it has to be a part of my role.” you went up into the clouds and then suddenly you came back down out of the clouds, dressed up like a normal teenage boy.’ He continued, ‘David, I believe you have been healed.’ And as soon as He said that, I just knew that I knew. That was the moment that God had healed me. A week after that we found out that I had in fact been complete healed from cancer.
