EDITORIAL “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19 Welcome to the latest edition of your Reach Magazine! As we live in a digital world where we increasingly share more information via the ‘digital highways’, our potential audience over the internet has never been so great. Growing at a staggering rate, from virtually nothing in 1989 to 3.6 billion users today. Countries that have been ‘closed’ to the Gospel for centuries are now online, with many using social media, streaming news and viewing entertainment as an integral part of their lives. Christianity’s growth over the years cannot just be contributed to the invention of the internet. Increased mobility and global communication has had a part to play and God still uses people like you and me, to share the Good News of Jesus with their neighbour. And now we can also spread the hope of Jesus to the far corners of the earth by harnessing modern technology, which if used appropriately, can be a great vehicle to share faith and impact lives. Today we have unprecedented opportunities to freely share what God has done in our lives with people all over the world. The Good News about Jesus is spreading far and wide in ways we could not have anticipated only a few decades ago. The ministry of CBN is dedicated to sharing the Gospel on TV, online and through initiatives such as the Superbook Bible App; sharing faith with a new generation. In this technology driven world we can easily forget how to relate our faith personally. Let this year be a year of intention – where we carefully select the tools we have at our disposal to impact lives, at home and far away.

TEACHING

CONSECRATED TO HIM Most of us would be moderately uncomfortable with the thought that we could be holy. Holiness seems to be an attribute reserved for God, but beyond that, a lot of us would have a difficult time trying to verbalise exactly what it is. Yet way back in the book of Leviticus, God clearly says to His people, “Be holy, for I am the LORD your God.” Leviticus 20:7 It is almost impossible for me to comprehend God’s Holiness. His holiness is the antithesis of what I am and what I know, and it evokes all kinds of feelings in me – from sheer terror to trembling reverence. I have been reading numerous Scripture passages and books on the holiness of God, and my reading has caused me to reflect on how cavalierly we treat God in the midst of such incredible blessings. As I was running an errand yesterday, I looked at the scenes passing by my car window. Beautiful homes with lovely yards; people golfing in designed clothing on perfectly manicured fairways; stores stocked with everything we could desire; lakes and trees and wild life; people fishing and swimming and biking. In the midst of it all, I was struck with how much we are given and how much we take for granted. I was overwhelmed with how much God has provided for us. And I was overwhelmed with how seldom we acknowledge Him for it. This biblical warning came to mind: “Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God … lest – when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; and when

04

your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God.” Deuteronomy 8:11-14 Words we need to heed. When we glimpse the greatness of our God, we often want to do something to honour Him. We are like Peter when he saw Jesus in His glory with Moses and Elijah. He said, “If you wish, let us make here three tabernacles.” Matthew 17:4 But in the book of Micah, God tells us what He requires of us to be pleasing to Him: “With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:6-8 God isn’t looking for perfect men and women; God isn’t asking us to build great monuments to Him. God is looking for people who will reverence Him in their hearts and in their lifestyles. God is looking for people in whom He can take up residence, with whom He can speak and walk, through whom He can work. He is looking for people who are willing to be set apart. Lord, I know that You understand my shortcomings, for You created me. But I also know that You are holy and awesome and that Your purposes for Your people far exceed what I could dream or imagine. Forgive me for being distracted from You. I bow my heart and my knee to You, the King of kings and Lord of lords. Perform a work in me that I might be pleasing in Your sight, O God. My heart cries out with Your angels as they call to one another, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” Isaiah 6:3

INSIDE CBN

CBN BALKAN: A HOPE AND A FUTURE From Our CBN Regional Director, Mark Dijkens

For nearly two decades CBN has reached out to the Balkan countries, a mountainous region in South-East Europe by the Adriatic Sea. Through indigenous broadcasts of The 700 Club, Christian World News and CBN’s classic Superbook series as well as the various humanitarian projects, CBN has been able to demonstrate God’s love for the people of the Balkans. Divided by political and religious reasons, this region has experienced much pain and loss due to the wars between states, ethnic and political groups, resulting in the deaths of at least 130,000 people over the years. The Good News is that God can redeem people to Himself, despite our history, cultural background or beliefs. Through 06

Jesus, He offers hope and a future! We are currently looking to set up a CBN Balkan office in the city of Zagreb, from where we will coordinate our media and humanitarian efforts. We recently met with various church and ministry leaders to see how we can serve the Church in the Balkan better, and work hand in hand to make a deeper impact. We were received with open hearts and heard the good news that the unity between churches and church leaders has never been greater than it is today. We believe that with God’s help we will see the redemption of this land and it’s people, bringing reconciliation and a hope and a future because of what Jesus did for us.

CBN STORY

THE GOD OF GREAT MIRACLES Like most days 6-year-old Reagan had gone out to play in the loft of a storage shed after she was back from school, but this time she fell and hit her head on the concrete. Her parents, Daryl and Tara saw no signs of serious injury but to be safe, they called an ambulance. At the hospital they found out that she had suffered head trauma and was in critical condition. In addition to her severe brain injury Reagan also had a fracture of her lower left leg and around her right eye. It was very severe. Her injuries were life threatening. The family reached out to their community for prayer. Reagan was heavily sedated for three weeks. During that time the brain swelling went down enough for doctors to be able to replace the bones in her skull. Afterwards, she started physical therapy. Her dad recalled, “But every day you could tell she was getting better. You couldn’t keep her down before the accident so she was strong willed.” The family continued to pray for their little girl’s healing. Daryl said, “And every night we prayed over her.” Her mom added, “We surrounded the room with Christian music and prayers and Scripture and spoke the word out loud.” Reagan’s infection cleared up quickly and she continued her therapy. Tara remembered, “It was 56 days after the accident. Eight weeks that we got to come home on March the 30th. And God didn’t leave anything unhealed. Everything was healed completely.” That was 2011. Today as Reagan moves into her teen years she still shows no sign of long-term effects. “I know that God answers prayers because I’m living proof of that.” Reagan said. Reagan’s mom concluded, “Prayer does work and that the power of prayer was there and healed her completely and that God is the Great Physician.”

“I know that God answers prayers because Iʼm living proof of that.”

DEVOTION

TO BE STILL AND KNOW GOD We live in an age where everything around us seems to be constantly changing, and technology plays a large part in that. With just a simple click of a button, I could be talking to someone from the other side of the world and I can have a thriving network of ‘friends’ without leaving the comfort of my bed. We are starting to become a people where the word ‘rest’ is almost old fashioned and obsolete in our lives. David Bezant, Digital Media Manager

“Be still, and know that I am God.” SUBSCRIBE TO OUR DAILY DEVOTIONS We would love to help you grow in your faith by drawing closer to God. Subscribe to our daily devotions cbneurope.com/ devotions and receive it daily in your inbox for free.

08

As I think about how technology is increasing our pace of life, that well known verse from Psalm 46 comes to mind, “Be still, and know that I am God”. Immediately this forces me to consider a hard challenge. How are we supposed to ‘be still and know God’, in a world where technology is encouraging us to do the opposite? This challenge is something I think we should all take to heart. The Bible is full of occasions where people spent time alone with just God, and there are numerous verses that speak of the importance of resting, refreshing and renewing our bodies. These verses I believe are even more important today. The question then, is what can we do to find rest, to be still and know God? I have to be honest and admit this is something which I am still battling with, but I believe it is a worthy challenge for us all to tackle. I am not saying that you need to abandon everything you have, go up a mountain and live in small hut, what I am saying is that we all need to sometimes ‘disconnect’ with the world and find the abundant peace God often provides in that still, quiet place of intimacy. Where it is just you and God. God is always there ready to speak and let His presence be known to us, so I encourage you to make an active decision and make space this week to have some good old fashioned time with God. You won’t regret it!

GLOBAL IMPACT

SHARING THE GOSPEL TO ALL

Fifty five years ago, no one knew how it would all unfold. But looking back now, it’s clear there was a well-layered plan, a remarkable blueprint, God using the ministry of CBN to take the Gospel to the world. “I’m thrilled to see cultures transformed,” says Gordon Robertson.

10

The plan is simple yet explosive; that is, to reproduce CBN’s ministry by establishing regional centres around the world. Gordon adds, “Train up people within their own culture to take a broadcast television ministry to the entire nation.” Teams of producers create dynamic television programmess shaped to fit the needs of each culture. “The ministry results have been phenomenal,” says Gordon. Such phenomenal results began quite humbly, a small UHF television station with a signal barely reaching the local neighbourhood. Now the 700 Club, CBN’s flagship programme, faithfully broadcasts the timeless truths of the Bible. And the production staff produce culturally relevant programmes. Rekindling hearts for Christ must include a personal touch. That’s why CBN’s ministry blueprint has, at its core, a Prayer Centre. Teams of trained staff are ready to provide a sensitive ear and a timely prayer. It’s here the spiritual battle rages as many people in need call every day. For them, the prayer centre is an oasis of hope. A well-layered ministry plan must reflect God’s compassion, a burning desire to help others. CBN’s Operation Blessing began in 1978 and today is International, a network of individuals building, feeding, clothing, and embracing all in the powerful name of Jesus. Fifty five years of experience allows CBN the courage and ability to adapt to our rapidly changing world, most notably the expansion of computer technology. Our new website, cbneurope.com provides valuable biblical resources and relevant articles. God’s radical blueprint for ministry is not a task CBN can accomplish alone. Rather, its a partnership of ideas, resources and support. A vital partnership that is helping CBN carry the Gospel message around the world. Thank you CBN partners!

THANK YOU CBN PARTNERS! Your support enables us to share the Gospel around the world and bring humanitarian aid and relief to those in need. To help us further, please visit www.cbneurope.com or call our team on 0300 561 0700 (UK).

GLOBAL IMPACT

NO FOOD TO SHARE Mirian’s teacher had asked her students to bring some food items to help families in need. When it came Mirian’s time to contribute, she slipped out of her chair. “I hid under the desk because I didn’t bring anything,” said the eight-year-old with tears streaming down her face. For two years Mirian’s mum Sheyla has been raising four kids on her own. Food became scarce after her husband abandoned them. Sometimes a small fish was all the protein the family would have for an entire week. “Sometimes there’s just no food and we don’t eat,” said Sheyla. Sheyla sold watermelon slices when she could afford to buy them. She never stopped looking for ways to feed her family and pay the bills. “I prayed all the time: ‘Lord, bend down and hear my cry.’ I asked God not to 12

forsake me when I needed him the most!” Operation Blessing met Mirian at an anti-parasite campaign at her school and offered to help. Sheyla was surprised when we showed her the small business we would set up in front of her home. Now she is the only one selling meat, fish and fresh vegetables in her entire neighbourhood! “I thank God my business is starting well and I am already thinking how I can make it grow!” said the single mom. “You met the needs of my children.” We had one more surprise for the family: a food basket which we presented to Mirian. Tears filled her eyes as she realised what the food would mean to her family. “Thank you Operation Blessing for helping me and my family!” said the grateful child.

GLOBAL IMPACT

LOOK AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING AROUND THE WORLD: FORMER RUSSIA STATES CBN distributed over eight tons of rice, 500 loaves of bread, more than 2,200 meals and 1,200 litres of drinking water to families in the military conflict zone in east Ukraine. Additionaly, CBN’s Mobile Medical Clinic held three outreaches in the Chernivtsy region, providing over 1,000 people with free medical assistance.

INDIA

Ratna’s husband was so obsessed with a son that when she gave birth to a second girl, he evicted his wife and daughters from the house. Desperate, they took refuge with Ratna’s parents. After her father died, Ratna and her mother became field labourers. She

remembers, “Many times we didn’t have anything to eat.” During that season, Ratna became a Christian, and prayed for Jesus’ help. Then, her pastor told her about CBN’s free 6-month tailoring course. Ratna took the course, hoping to start a business from home, but knew that she couldn’t afford her own sewing machine. At her graduation, she and her classmates received sewing machines! She has since started her own business and improved their lives.

INDIA Akash is a 13-yearold and dreams of becoming a doctor, but a cataract was beginning to blind his left eye, and his parents couldn’t afford surgery. CBN heard about Akash, and immediately provided him with a free operation. He said, “When the bandage was removed. ... I could see clearly!” He now enjoys school, saying, “I’m making lots of friends. ... Because of you, I am confident that I can become a doctor!”

INDONESIA CBN conducted general health and dental clinics for underprivileged people in 18 locations, treating more than 7,400 people.

FEATURED

NOT YET TRANSFORMED Have you ever heard of ‘Moore’s Law’? Unless you’re a bit geeky, you might be forgiven for not knowing what that is. In 1965, Dr Gordon Moore predicted that the number of transistors that

“Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” Romans 10:17

14

could be etched on a chip would double annually for at least a decade, leading to astronomical increases in computer power. What does that mean practically? Well, computers used to fill rooms. Now they fit onto one penny coins. There’s more “tech” power in my iPhone than in the devices that the first space flights used. My generation is the last to grow up without the internet - my wife is only four years younger than me but doesn’t remember having to stop using a landline in order to

“go online”. Now, I can “go online” anywhere, anytime, with almost any device. My TV is online. The least used function on my phone is the phone feature. It’s primarily an internet device. There’s a fairly good chance that you’re reading this online or in a magazine with pictures that were sourced online. The Internet is huge. Vast. Every second, approximately 6,000 tweets are tweeted; more than 40,000 Google queries are searched; and more than 2 million emails are sent. That’s just

15

FEATURED websites. We have access to every bit of data that we could ever want. Never before has mankind been so informed - never before has all of humanity’s knowledge been able to be accessed by a child on their iPad.

16

“Itʼs clear that it is more transformation that we need; not more information. Our hearts have to be rebooted.”

You would think that by now we would be living in a Utopia - a brand new world without sorrow or suffering, our technological advances freeing us from the effects of sin and war and disease and famine. Surely we are the people we should have always been, surely everyone has an equal opportunity, equal resources and the world is surely now fair?

under the weight of greed, people living far below the standard of living through government corruption.

And yet it seems like we’re a long way from that, doesn’t it? For all our advances, we haven’t made much progress. We’ve gone forward, sure, but not necessarily in the directions that matter most. We haven’t made poverty history, yet. There’s wars and rumours of wars, economies creaking

We can be instantly informed of these developments, the “breaking news” breaking all the time. However, our information hasn’t led us to transformation. We are no less selfish, no less vain, no less prone to sin. We know much more but that knowledge hasn’t led to change. We are aware

FEATURED of our neighbours need but not more motivated to help. If anything, our technology has only made us more self-focused. We are the Selfie. It’s clear that it is more transformation that we need; not more information. Our hearts have to be rebooted; our internal system rewired. No Silicon Valley app or innovation can do that for us. Sure, our behaviour can be tweaked for a while but our hearts remain unchanged. If you got a Fitbit for Christmas, then you know what I mean. You can count your steps, measure your calories but you’ll still curse the person who pulls out in front of you in traffic. There is only one thing that has the power to change mankind and that’s the Gospel. It comes through hearing (Romans 10:17) but not only is it information the word about Christ - but it is also transformation. It changes us. Paul says that it is the POWER of God for salvation (Romans 1:16). As we receive and process this heavenly download, it changes the heart of us: transforming more than it informs. Information about God is good, but transformation through revelation is even better. When we encounter God’s word it changes who we are. One of the problems that doctors have to navigate now is people self diagnosing and Googling their symptoms, leading them to think they may have certain conditions. However, even if you self diagnose, you still need to go to a doctor to be treated. The information isn’t enough. God’s Word isn’t like that. The Gospel both diagnoses our problem and offers us the solution.

Fin Sheridan, CBN Web Producer

“There is only one thing that has the power to change mankind and thatʼs the Gospel.”

The challenge for us is to sift through the information, the good and the bad, the helpful and the meaningless. Our mission should be the pursuit of truth, the desire to find what God is saying and feed ourselves on that. Truth leads to transformation, it will change who we are. I know that I waste far too much time on information; mindlessly trawling the internet through the countless funny videos and silly articles whilst my character, heart and mind cry out for the meaningful, the true and the transforming. 17

SUPERBOOK

SUPERBOOK SCHOOLS: THE STORY SO FAR

The images from the 1996 TV series, Testament: The Bible in Animation, have stayed with me throughout my life. Today, when I read about the miracles of Moses, the disobedience of Jonah, the strength of Elijah or the loyalty of Ruth, I feel a sense of home. I was blessed to grow up with these characters and the first impressions I had of them lingered long after I stopped watching. Conversely, ask me what I learned in Religious Education and I couldn’t really tell you anything coherent. RE lessons, in my experience, were never particularly inspiring. In 2013, Ofsted reported that RE in schools was not good enough due to a “weaknesses in teachers’ understanding of the subject, poor and fragmented curriculum planning” and was “isolated” from

other subjects leading to “missed opportunities” to support wider learning. We’re a “religious nation” but we don’t teach it very well. I have spent the last few months meeting with RE leaders from around the country, and have been able to glimpse the challenge we face. Overall, RE is seen as a ‘token’ subject; teachers don’t feel confident, measuring learning is difficult, and often a term’s worth of RE is squeezed into one day just to check it off as ‘done’. Something has to change. The importance of RE in schools is huge. Children learn about the concepts of ‘truth’ and ‘purpose’, they’re taught respect and tolerance, and ultimately are given the space to explore their own personal beliefs. It’s so important that children from all backgrounds should learn biblical

SUPERBOOK stories and morals in a way that is fun, exciting and memorable because it will impact them for life. CBN Europe together with Ethos Education, have just launched a set of brand new resources, which are available for FREE for primary school teachers: Superbook Schools. So far, six Superbook episodes have been given accompanying assembly and lesson plans, which include specially edited clips, downloadable powerpoints and worksheets, and a wealth of background information about the historical period. Each lesson connects the individual story to the Bible’s ‘big picture’ so that children will always learn about God’s ultimate salvation plan. Connections are made to other subjects too; pupils will study the poetry of the psalms, make art based on creation, investigate as detectives, and analyse the reporting styles of the gospels. So far, Superbook Schools has been extremely wellreceived by national RE leaders, teachers and pupils alike. “It has been a real pleasure to create resources for Superbook, which provides such an exciting, media rich, immersive experience of the Bible. Our goal is to help secure learning about key biblical texts and the core concepts of Christianity,” say Nick and Carol Pollard, co-founders of Ethos Education.

Milly Smart, Superbook Coordinator

INTERVIEW

KELLIE LANE

Interview from The 700 Club

You didn’t always pray with the kind of certainty and power that you pray with today. There was a time in your life where you made some foolish choices. For many years I rarely prayed and read my Bible. I didn’t seek God. I had multiple failed marriages, and made a lot of bad decisions and even comtemplated suicide. My life was in disarray. I thought I was a Christian, I was part of a church and even sang in the choir. But I didn’t know God then and, I didn’t know Jesus then. You endured some losses and during that time you felt that God was silent, how did you deal with that? I am a very inquisitive person by nature and I literally began to do some searches on ‘Does God really answer prayers?’ and somewhere along the way I realised I wasn’t the only one that felt this way. 20

Kellie Lane spends every morning on Facebook praying for the nations. Her videos reach more than 45 million people every week. It was out of a desperate situation that she learned the importance of a life of prayer and totally surrender to God.

WHEN GOD IS SILENT What do you do when you’ve prayed and prayed and there seems to be no answer? Through personal experience and studying the Bible, Kellie Lane has learned how to hold on to heaven’s promises-for yourself or others-when it seems like all hell is breaking loose. You will discover why you may be waiting and where God is, in this difficult season and what you can do to cooperate. Available at amazon.co.uk

INTERVIEW What I found out was that it is all about positioning. Truly having a relationship with God. And that when you are desparate you will do anything it takes to get answers. What was the turning point in your life? My mum was diagnosed with cancer, at the same time my third marriage ended, I was raising my three children on my own, I was feeling my life was just miserable and I didn’t want to continue like that. I remember saying ‘God if you can do anything with my life, I surrender’ and I think that was key. When you get to a place of ‘God if you don’t do this, I know it can’t be done.’ Talk about how you learned to pray powerfully. I began to look at scriptures. I didn’t understand the Bible at that time but I started to pray scripture. I know that was the Holy Spirit. I’ve been in church for a long time but when I began to pray His word, there was power. And slowly things began to change in my life. What inspired you to start praying on Social Media? The world needs help, we need hope. And I’ve been through things and been restored, so people could relate to that. It happened without me realising what God was going to do with it. I had no idea then that this would turn into a Monday to Friday thing. What would you say for people that feel the same way you felt, that God

“ʻDoes God really answer prayers?ʼ Somewhere along the way I realised I wasnʼt the only one that felt this way.” is silent? Do not give up. Sometimes it takes time. It took David many years from when he was annoited until he was made king of Israel, but he never got out of his position, never complained or doubted God’s will for his life. The same thing for Joseph. I learned to keep praying. It doesn’t matter how many years it takes, just keep praying and fasting. When you keep praying, your prayers will shift into the alignment of His will and you will see God doing things that you could never ask or imagine.

PRAYER CENTRE

OUR LOVE FOR GOD The key to living the life of abundance, love and freedom that God has planned for you is in following the first and greatest commandment: love God with all your heart, soul and mind. There is no other way. The solution to the conflict and struggles in your relationships, your hurt, your unforgiveness, your insecurities and your fears is in Him. He is the source of love, peace and grace for our lives. But just as with any relationship it takes time, effort and dedication to know and love Him. We must choose to prioritise our relationship with God and put Him first in our lives. Only then will we be empowered and enabled to love those around us well and live the life He has called us to. “Jesus replied: ʻLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment.ʼ” Matthew 22:37 NIV

TESTIMONY “The 700 Club has been such a blessing in prayer support as I’ve been back and forth to eye hospital for the last 15 months. The Lord is doing amazing things and I’ve been standing on his Rhema word for a year now in John 14:1214 it says, “In solemn truth I tell you anyone believing in me shall do the same miracles I have done, and even greater ones, because I am going to be with my Father. You can ask Him for anything using my name, and I will do it, for this will bring praise to the Father because of what I, the Son, will do for you. Yes, ask anything using my name, and I will do it! And on Jeremiah 23:29 “Does no my word burn like fire? Asks the Lord. Is it not like a mighty hammer that smashed the rock to pieces?” Paula
