EDITORIAL Dear friends, Welcome to our brand new design of the Reach magazine for 2017! Together with our team here at CBN we have worked hard on a fresh format with some great new features. What a year it has been! Through your prayers and support and with the Lord’s blessing, much has been accomplished. From the launch of some great resources for churches (www.superbookacademy. com) and primary schools (www.superbookschools. org) along with continuing to reach viewers in the UK, Ireland and across Europe with the Gospel on a daily basis, you have helped us to impact so many lives! I truly believe that this year will be a year of answered prayers. Corrie Ten Boom understood the importance and power of prayer by saying: “Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it. A man is powerful on his knees.” The ministry of CBN can only be fuelled by prayer. We are fully dependent on God, who makes all things possible. This year, we join hands with a very special project that has been launched in the UK, The Wall of Answered Prayer. Aiming for a million answered prayers, this project is a strong statement to the world to say that our God answers prayer and we want to amplify this message through all we do. Find out more about this special partnership and how to share your story, by reading page 6 of this magazine. It is our prayer that this year, you will experience God’s presence and provision as we prioritise meeting with Him, praying with audacious faith and knowing that He is able to accomplish far more than we can even think or imagine. To Him be the glory in Jesus Christ! On behalf of all of us here at CBN we wish you a very blessed and joyful 2017!

TEACHING

IT STARTS WITH GRATITUDE Only two cultures in the world have existed for 4,000 years: the Han Chinese, who never had to leave their land; and the Jews, who miraculously survived much of their history without a country. We can learn from our elder brothers in the faith about how to maintain faith in the midst of a culture that opposes you. The Lord chose Abraham, knowing he would teach his children God’s promises. How faithful are we to share His Word with the next generation? We must tell them, because the world will not. There is great joy in seeing children grow up into spiritual maturity, and their children after them. The Jewish people have also kept their culture by keeping the Sabbath - honouring God with a weekly remembrance. It begins every Friday evening as mothers light candles and pray. Psalm 92, often attributed to Moses, is a song for the Sabbath. The psalm opens with thanksgiving: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; to declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night (vv. 1-2). Do you feel weary and dry? Verse 10 promises, I have been anointed with fresh oil. Every day, He will give you a fresh anointing, vision and hope.

04

The psalm concludes: Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age ... to declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him (vv. 13-15). Think of the Jewish people singing the song of the Sabbath every week to guide them through the centuries. When looking at all the uncertainty in the world, remember - He is working, and He is faithful to see it through to completion. So, this New Year, take time to give thanks for what God is unfolding in the world today. Our hearts can be glad because of who He is. He is using us to preach the Gospel and usher in His kingdom. In that kingdom, every day is a holiday and a Sabbath because we can rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ. God bless you. WHAT IS THE SABBATH?

Start by reading Exodus 20:8-11

Rest in God

Sabbath means ‘rest’ and is a command that God gave to Israel to give them space to rest in His presence. Jesus says in Mark 2:27 that “the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.” It is a gift of love to meet man’s need.

Keep it Holy

The rest is not to be pointless rest, but God-centred rest. Focus is to be directed to God in a way that is more intense and stable than on the other days of the week. Keep the day holy by keeping your attention on the holy God.

Gordon Robertson, Chief Executive Officer

“Every day, He will give you a fresh anointing, vision and hope.”

Scripture is quoted from the NKJV. Ths teaching was adapted from a sermon given during a CBN staff chapel.

INSIDE CBN

A MILLION BRICKS, A MILLION ANSWERED PRAYERS! CBN has partnered with ‘The Wall of Answered Prayer’ with the aim to help collect a million answered testimonies from across the nation and beyond. Richard Gamble, the founder of ‘The Wall’ project, initiated this ambitious campaign that will see a national landmark built, somewhere by a motorway, that tells of Jesus’ goodness to all people. Incorporating a million bricks, each representing an answered prayer, this landmark will not only be a visual demonstration of God’s power at work, but will also touch many millions more who will be able to access the stories online. Is it ambitious? Yes. Is it a short term project? No. Will it be challenging? Yes – in many ways. Is it impossible? Not at all – as we believe that with 06

God, all things are possible! The key is that this is His project, His pace and His provision. We believe that through this project, there will be many new opportunities to speak with people about Jesus, and to see many more make a decision for Christ. After all, your story matters and can change someone else’s! It is our privilege to partner together with Richard and his team at ‘The Wall of Answered Prayer’, and stand side to side to see the Name of Jesus lifted through this project, through the conversations, through the stories that will be shared to demonstrate His power. To share your story and get a brick, visit www.cbneurope.com/thewall

CBN STORY

THE FINGERPRINT OF GOD After two years of trying for a baby, Amy and Gary finally took home their little girl, Katie. Their daughter was just six weeks old when they noticed something was wrong. They rushed Katie to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with SVT - Superventricular Tachycardia - a condition caused by electrical defects in her heart. “There she was just tiny, white, pale as a ghost and the nurse had already started CPR on her. And it just knocked the breath out of me. We prayed, begging God to please save her,” says Amy. For over an hour and a half, the doctor and his team continued CPR on Katie’s lifeless body. Dr. Athos says, “Normally we do that for about half an hour and normally after that we consider the brain to have suffered and we stop. But for some reason we kept going.” Then, they found a heart beat. She was alive, but would require surgery for her heart condition. How the trauma affected her brain was still unknown. Amy says, “There was probably a 70% chance that Katie would have severe brain damage, to the point that she would be unable to function. I left the ICU and went outside, I sat on a bench and I just cried. I was so grateful to God for giving her back, but at the same time I was still so devastated.” Amy’s best friend Judy started a Facebook page, asking for prayer on Katie’s behalf. More than 1,000 churches got involved. After 48 hours, Katie’s condition improved and doctors were able to implant a pacemaker. After 12 days in the hospital, Katie returned home. Today she is a healthy, active fiveyear-old, with no signs of brain damage. “If there’s something called a miracle, this is one of them,” says Dr. Athos. “Because that part I cannot explain. How can her brain survive so intact? Every time I see her, I call her ‘miracle kid’.”

“When I see her scar, it reminds me of how blessed we are. It was Godʼs fingerprint.” 07

The idea of having a new year’s resolution, forces people to get vision for areas of their life they would like to improve, but at the same time when we discuss our resolutions for the year ahead we expect to fail. Isn’t that strange? In 2 Corinthians 5:17 we learn that we can’t be who we were, and who we are at the same time. When we make a new year’s resolution we understand that we are making a decision before God. We pray and ask God to reveal areas in our life that He wants to change or teach us about in the year ahead, and we commit to seeing it through. We fulfil our ‘new year’s resolution’ in His strength and excel, rather than in our own and fail. For me personally 2016 has been the most challenging but most rewarding year at the same time. In the beginning of the year God gave me the word discover. Discover Him, and in Him I would discover who He called me to be. Three main areas I worked on was reading and understanding the Bible, building good community and being honest with myself and my leaders around me. By being faithful and working hard to pursue the best God had for me to discover this year I saw God’s faithfulness. I know it wouldn’t have been possible if i hadn’t made the decision in my heart to go on this journey of discovery with Him. The Bible teaches us that a heart that is thankful to God is a worshipping heart. One of my favourite verses is from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. Being joyful is a heart-response of gratitude and honour to God. Praying continually means to never stop praying, it is about responding to God not just requesting from God. So even in the middle of a challenge or trial, we have access to God’s blessing and steadfastness. When life is set on solid foundations of belief in God and trust in His Word, your outlook is clearer and your direction established. I am excited for this new year because it brings new opportunities, fresh perspective and a blank canvas of possibilities.

GLOBAL IMPACT

THE GIFT OF A BETTER LIFE

Tragically, approximately 153 million children are orphaned worldwide. Millions more have parents that live below the poverty line and suffer hunger, hardship, abuse, and even fall victim to the horrors of human trafficking. In many countries, thousands will die before the age of five from food shortages, polluted water, and lack of basic hygiene and medical care.

10

Throughout the Bible, God expresses His compassion for abandoned children in need, and instructs His followers to “defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed” (Psalm 82:3 niv). CBN partners have taken this to heart through humanitarian outreaches here and abroad, including CBN’s Operation Blessing and Orphan’s Promise. Generous partners are offering practical help to thousands of children by providing food, housing, medical care and education. Best of all, they are sharing Jesus’ love and hope while rescuing the next generation! Naji’s family fled from Syria’s civil war to a refugee camp in Lebanon. Tragically, his father died and his mother abandoned her children to their aunt and uncle. Angry and depressed, Naji tried attending the Lebanese public school, but the teachers were abusive to the refugee children. Then, a CBN-supported ministry visited Naji’s camp. He now attends their school and says, “The teachers are nice, and I’ve made a lot of friends.” He likes watching Superbook there and says, “I love Jesus, He is always with me.” We also installed a water system in the camp, and brought Naji’s family and others monthly food and other supplies. When we surprised Naji with a new bike, he exclaimed, “I thought I was dreaming! I couldn’t believe I would ever have a bicycle, thank you!” And that’s just one of the ways partners are offering a better future to orphans and vulnerable children through CBN’s many worldwide outreaches. We can’t thank our partners enough for investing their resources and prayers to offer these children a better life. GLOBAL IMPACT

A PLACE TO CALL HOME Sonia lived a happy life with her husband and their four children. When she learned she was pregnant again, she was thrilled, but her joy quickly turned to sadness when her husband died of AIDS. After the funeral, Sonia and her children stayed with her husband’s family, but they forced her and her children out of their own home. “They kicked us out and there was nothing I could do but put my trust in God,” says Sonia. She took her children to her parent’s home, but they only had enough money to support themselves. “We spend days without any real food,” Sonia said. “Surviving on what little my mother got from the field.” Then Sonia reached out to Life Child, a ministry supported by CBN’s Orphans Promise. We arranged for the family to 12

move into a children’s village run by the ministry. Now they have a place to call home. We also helped Sonia treat her malaria and the HIV infection she got from her husband. A few months after arriving, she had a baby boy, who was born healthy and with no HIV. “God answered all my prayers here,” says Sonia. All of the children go to school there and there’s a clinic that takes care of their medical needs. This is the first of 18 homes being built to help families like Sonia stay together. As she’s supported here, Sonia will help take care of dozens of orphans who desperately need a safe place to live. “I will care for them like they are my own,” says Sonia. “I thank God that I’m here. Now, I can help other children, as well as my own.”

GLOBAL IMPACT

LOOK AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING AROUND THE WORLD: CHINA Haoxuan is from a rural village in Tianjin. He was born with a serious heart condition, but his family could not afford surgical treatment. At the age of 5, Haoxuan received a donation to get the first of two surgeries he needed to improve his health. Unable to afford the second surgery, CBN provided support for Haoxuan to have the procedure, and he is now on the road to recovery. His family is grateful.

THAILAND

Making charcoal for a living exhausted 62 year- old Yo. He worked far from his Myanmar village, so he rarely saw his son Sar. When Yo developed tuberculosis, Sar said, “He started coughing up blood. I was so worried.” Earning little, Yo went

deeper into debt to buy food. But even with all of his problems, he still dreamed of starting his own cement brickmaking business. That was when Yo’s pastor alerted CBN to the family’s needs. CBN partners helped the struggling family, and provided them with all the materials they needed to start the new business. Now Yo works at home with Sar’s help, and says, “I tithe to our church. ... And we now pay cash for our food!” Sar says, “He is my hero. Thank you, CBN!”

CIS The prayer centre received more than 14,260 calls, emails, and letters. Over 21,500 unique visitors viewed our Russian- language evangelism website, PoiskBoga.com. Also, 11 missionary centres began Superbook clubs throughout eastern Ukraine. We love partnering with Superbook to change the lives of kids around the world! Our Superbook clubs in Ukraine help us share the love of God and a message of hope with children impacted by the war.

COSTA RICA Orphan’s Promise provided over 16,900 meals for children living in poverty across seven communities.

FEATURED

FRESH STARTS Every year, we have the same ritual don’t we? Every magazine, advert and piece of media will be talking about the same thing: the potential of a fresh start, the opportunity for the new year to bring a “new you”. Maybe it’s the lure of better physical fitness and a chance to finally actually use a gym membership. Perhaps the new year brings a fresh commitment to tackle some financial

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23

14

debt: clear a credit card, pay off a loan, live within your means or start saving. Maybe your goals are less material; maybe the change that you seek relates to a change in character or a desire to leave a habit behind. The reason that every media outlet latches onto the idea of a fresh start or a new beginning every January, is because they know that it’s something that every human being craves. It’s an opportunity that we’re all looking for: the appetite for a fresh start is universal. That’s because a fresh start

represents a second chance, or a third, or a sixteenth, or a hundredth chance. 2016 was, for many people, one of the most significant years of their lifetime. Huge world events happened; events that will have repercussions for decades to come. Countries divided, unions split, wars broke out and cultural icons died. Maybe on a more personal level, last year was one that you’d rather forget. Even if last year wasn’t directly a difficult year for you, a glance at the news or online is enough to quickly dampen your mood.

15

FEATURED Now more than ever, the world is an uncertain place. A new year offers an escape, especially for those without faith in Jesus. We can bury the last year, pushing it far from our minds as “Auld Langs Syne” plays in the background. Behold the old has gone, the new has come and hopefully it’ll be better than the last! This kind of thinking is fine and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using the new year as a time for reflection and a springboard into the future. However, if we only get a fresh start every 365 days, what kind of a life is that?! As followers of Jesus, the idea of a fresh start is not new, but one that is at the core of our faith. Central to becoming a Christian is an awareness that something needs to change and then the Spirit-given realisation that Jesus is offering that change, in ways and depths that we could never imagine.

16

“We can view the next year through the lens of faith, believing that God has got great things for us.” For Christians, our new year is every morning. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” What a promise! We don’t have to wait for January and hope that if we put our minds to it, next year might be better. Every morning is an opportunity for fresh grace. In fact, we can go even

FEATURED further: every moment is an opportunity to reach out to God and receive a fresh start. What the next year holds is totally unknown, except to God. I don’t know what will happen and neither do you. That might fill you with fear and a sense of unease or it might fill you with excitement and anticipation. Once again though, that verse in Lamentations gives us cause for great hope. It describes three attributes of God: His love, His mercy and His faithfulness. It’s so reassuring, as we step into a new year that God loves us steadfastly, that His mercy is unending and that His faithfulness is great. Reading those words and thinking, just for a second, on that truth can produce in us a joyful confidence! We don’t have to fear the new year; we can step boldly forward into it! Now, I’ve been wearing glasses for over 13 years. I don’t like them much but without them, I honestly cannot see a thing. The lens’ inside my glasses completely adjust my experience of the world around me. Every time I take them off, the world completely blurs. I lose all sense of perspective. Losing my glasses is the worst because I can’t even see them in order to find them! But when I’m wearing them, objects are in focus. I am able to understand the world, able to see where I’m going and able to recognise people. You and I have a choice to make. We can view the next year through the lens of faith, believing that God has got great things for us, that his promises are true, that he alone sits on the throne of the universe and we can trust him completely. Alternatively, we can view 2017 with an anxious, fearful lens and a sense of dread and worry. Whatever choice you make, the good news of the gospel is that our resolution in January isn’t the defining point of our year. At any moment, we can choose to see with a different perspective, choose to believe in God’s goodness and choose a fresh start.

Fin Sheridan, CBN Web Producer

SUPERBOOK

SUPERBOOK FOR REFUGEE CHILDREN

KING SOLOMON

The United Nations estimates there are two million refugees living in the most primitive conditions just in Lebanon alone. It was into this place of suffering that Elian, a CBN employee, went to bring hope through Superbook to the land of her birth. The first stop on her journey was a church in Beirut which had taken in 150 Iraqi and Syrian refugee children. Then she made her way into a very different situation, a camp made up of hundreds of thousands of people in the Bekaa Valley, living in tents in the most desperate conditions imaginable. “I heard so many heartbreaking stories. Every time I asked them, ‘how can I pray for you?’, the only answer I got was, ‘Pray that we can find food tomorrow,’” she shared. Then Elian set up and showed the Superbook episode In the Beginning to nearly 200 Muslim children and adults. She hares with emotion: “I grew up in a war zone and the only fun part of the day was when my grandmother had me watch Superbook. It changed my life as a child. I want to know that Superbook is in every house, in every church and in every refugee camp, because I know that it changes lives.”

In the new episode of Superbook, King Solomon, Chris faces a challenge he never imagined when his father leaves him in charge of an important project. When he is unsure of what to do, Superbook takes him, Joy and Gizmo back to ancient Jerusalem where they meet King Solomon. There, Solomon encourages Chris to share his problems and worries with God and to pray for wisdom. To get the episode visit superbook.org.uk

INTERVIEW

JUDAH SMITH

Judah Smith is the lead pastor of the City Church in Seattle, Washington and also a New York Times bestselling author. He has recently been on The 700 Club to talk about his book ‘How’s Your Soul? where he explores what a healthy soul looks like.

HOWʼS YOUR SOUL? Interview from The 700 Club

The title of your book How’s your soul? Is a heavy question. What kind of response do you get from people when you ask that? It seems to be an appropriate question right now; where things are in our country. In some cases I’ve got the response, ‘what does that even mean?’ ‘What do you mean my soul’ and ‘how do I you know what my soul even is?’ Its allowed some really meaningful and interesting questions in the context of our church community. How did God bring you to this place in your own personal walk? It started seven years ago, my dad had just passed away from a six-year battle with multiple 20

If we would pause for a moment, we would find that the things that matter most in life are rooted in the health of what Judah Smith calls the “inside you.” How’s Your Soul? is an invitation to find lasting emotional satisfaction and stability by bringing our feelings into alignment with God’s truth, moving beyond simply surviving, and learning how to live each day with eternal significance. INTERVIEW myeloma cancer and I had taken over leadership of the church. Three months into leading the church I think I’d exasperated all of my sermons. I sat with our leadership and they said, ‘Are you okay?’ and I kind of broke down and said ‘I’m not. I miss my dad’, I didn’t know if I was going to make it. It was at that point that we made a really deliberate decision as a family to really take a moment for our souls. I don’t think I’d be here, doing what I’m doing if I hadn’t pressed pause and really started stewarding my inside. In the world we live in today, where we see so much cultural division, and a lot of people are unsettled or uncertain about their future, how do you get to this question? You painted the portrait very accurately where we stand in today’s world. It’s imperative for us to understand that the first thing God said that wasn’t good in Scripture was that Adam was alone. He had a lot of pets and a lot of fruit but he didn’t have a comparable friend or helpmate. I think we were designed for relationship and not just through our phones and social media but really connecting and knowing each other. Listening to understand, experiencing true connectivity I think that’s a challenge and it puts us in a vulnerable place. I’m passionate about people really being known and knowing others. How do we nurture our soul? In the Hebrew Scriptures you’ll find that it is very difficult to define the soul. You’ll find synonyms such as heart,

spirit, mind, soul, they kind of all mean the same. I love how King David said ‘let all that is within me bless His Holy Name’ and I think the soul can be defined as all that is within you. The question we are asking is, ‘is what is inside of me healthy, buoyant and alive.’ We went back to the Garden of Eden and looked at the optimal environment for a healthy soul. We found four essentials that you can looked at in the project and get people to look and ask themselves, ‘are these four areas of my life ok?’

“The question we are asking is, is what is inside of me healthy, buoyant and alive?” Talk a little bit about the significance of rest and the importance of the Sabbath. I do think rest is first and foremost, meaning God is first and foremost. He’s in charge. The government is on his shoulders. Sabbath and rest is this idea that there is a God and I’m not him. While I cease he continues to hold the world in the palm of his hand. It’s actually a form of worship. Rest is this profound posture of saying you’re God and I trust you. It’s not a suggestion, it’s a command. We really need to have rest to reprieve in and margin in our life to recognise that we believe in a sovereign God who’s in control. 21

TESTIMONY “I thought I must write to tell you of miraculous occurrence. God healed me of a long standing condition of Spinal Stenosis. This injury occurred during a car crash in January 1978 in which I was blinded too. On the 18th of August watching the 700 Club show on Revelation TV, I touched my lower spine and spoke aloud to the Lord saying ‘Lord wouldn’t it be wonderful if Pat and Terry addressed my problem and spoke healing over it?’ Then I heard Terry say ‘There is someone with a Spinal Stenosis and God has healed you.’ I was overwhelmed I have found that much of the pain in my lower back has gone now and I am able to stand and walk for much longer. Thank you so much for everything you do and may the Lord continue to use you all powerfully. God bless you.” Geraldine
