Editoriale _ Un cibo antico per una tavola moderna Chi l’avrebbe mai detto? Che sÏ, insomma, a rappresentare la genuinità dei cibi della terra di Bergamo all’Esposizione Universale di Milano 2015 (o Expo 2015) si sarebbe fatto ricorso a un piatto tradizionale della montagna bergamasca? Fino a poco tempo fa pochi ci avrebbero scommesso perchÊ la polenta per i bergamaschi, ma non solo, è sinonimo di cibo povero, i cui componenti sono unicamente farina di mais, acqua e sale, che ha sfamato per secoli generazioni di contadini della pianura e della collina e di montanari. A dir la verità , per l’Expo si punta sulla polenta taragna, una versione gustosissima nella quale a farine di pregio e qualità si affiancano i formaggi che sono l’eccellenza degli alpeggi bergamaschi.

Un tuffo nel passato per innalzare la bandiera della tipicitĂ piĂš genuina cui si abbinano vini, salumi, prodotti della collina, della pianura e dei laghi bergamaschi.

Questo numero di Key guarda anche alla montagna raggiungendo il paese di Schilpario, nella Valle di Scalve, un tempo una delle piÚ appartate dell’intero territorio e che proprio per questo ha conservato e mantenuto le proprie antiche peculiarità , soprattutto per quanto riguarda il centro storico, l’ambiente, le tradizioni, i prodotti tipici.

Un luogo che viene proposto per trascorrervi una giornata, o anche piĂš, ponendo le basi per ritornarvi.

An ancient food for a modern table Who would have thought that representing genuine food from the province of Bergamo at the Milan Universal Expo in 2015 would be a traditional mountain dish? Up until a short time ago, few would have imagined this could happen because polenta, with its ingredients of maize flour, water and salt, is, for the people of Bergamo, synonymous with peasant food. It is a dish that for centuries has fed generations of farmers from the plains and hills and people living in the mountains. In truth, the dish being presented at the Expo is polenta taragna, a very tasty version that combines different types of excellent quality flour with fine cheese made from the milk of cows that graze on Alpine pastures: a step back in time to raise the flag for typical local dishes that include wines, cured meats and other produce from the hills, plains and lakes of Bergamo. This issue of Key also takes a look at the mountains, with a review of the town of Schilpario, in the Scalve Valley. Once considered one of the most secluded places of the entire province, it has, precisely for this reason, preserved and kept its unique qualities unchanged, particularly with regard to the old town centre, the natural environment, and its traditions and local products.

We propose visiting Schilpario for a day trip, or even longer - it’s a place that you’ll want to return to again and again.

F

ino a qualche anno fa per apprezzare un piatto tipicamente bergamasco come la polenta taragna era necessario sedersi a tavola in qualche superstite trattoria nelle valli oppure raggiungere uno dei rifugi sui monti.

Qui resisteva ancora la tradizione di questo cibo semplice e genuino dove alla polenta viene mescolato il formaggio prodotto negli alpeggi.

Un piatto robusto e saporito, molto gustoso, da accompagnare con buon vino. Cibo ideale per i montanari, per chi svolgeva lavori all’aria aperta e per escursionisti, poiché sano e ricco di calorie.

Oggi la taragna è un alimento sul quale si concentra l’attenzione di quanti sono attenti al cibo e alla cultura locale unitamente ad associazioni come Slow Food e a chef titolati. È stata anche al centro della kermesse “Polenta taragna orobica, l’oro della nostra terra” che, nell’arco di tre giorni, ha portato l’attenzione su una serie di prodotti tipici che si abbinano alla polenta e sul recupero della tradizione della biodiversità. Grande interesse sta suscitando il percorso che ha portato a riscoprire farine di pregio ricavate dal mais spinato di Gandino (presidio Slow Food), dal nostrano dell’Isola Bergamasca, area a ridosso dei fiumi Brembo e Adda, e dal rostrato rosso di Rovetta, nell’ideale abbinamento a

ntil a few years ago, to enjoy a typically Bergamask dish such as polenta taragna, you had to sit at a table in one of the few surviving trattorias of the valleys or a mountain refuge. The tradition of serving simple, wholesome dishes persisted in these places, where polenta was combined with cheese made from the milk of cows that graze on the alpine pastures. Rich in calories, this robust, flavoursome dish is excellent with a good wine and the ideal meal for hikers and people living in the mountains who work outdoors all day.

Today polenta taragna attracts the attention of people who care about what they eat and are interested in local culture, as well as award-winning chefs and associations such as Slow Food. It was also the focus of the event “Polenta taragna orobica, l’oro della nostra terra” (Polenta taragna from the Orobie, the gold of our land), which over three days placed the spotlight on a series of local products eaten with polenta and on restoring the tradition of biodiversity. Great interest was shown in the rediscovery of fine flour made from Gandino barbed (spinato) maize (overseen by Slow Food), the “nostrano” maize from the area of Isola Bergamasca, situated along the rivers Brembo and Adda, and the “rostrato rosso” maize of

Rovetta, which combine perfectly with the exquisite cheeses of the Bergamo mountains, some of which are already established internationally such as Branzi, il Formai de Mut and the historic Bitto cheese (overseen by Slow Food).

Dozens of other typical products with links to local cultural traditions are also being given prominence.

The contribution of Bergamo Chamber of Commerce in promoting these products is proving invaluable, beginning with the closely linked initiative that relaunches polenta taragna entitled “La polenta taragna orobica scende in città” (Polenta taragna from the Orobie area comes to town). Dishes of polenta taragna will be offered in restaurants and trattorias participating in

formaggi che sono autentici tesori della montagna bergamasca, alcuni dei quali già affermati a livello internazionale come il Branzi, il Formai de Mut e il Bitto storico (presidio Slow Food).

Accanto alla taragna scendono in campo decine di altri prodotti tipici che rimandano alla tradizione popolare e culturale del territorio, alla cui valorizzazione il contributo della Camera di Commercio di Bergamo si sta rivelando determinante. A partire dall’iniziativa strettamente collegata con la riscoperta e il rilancio della taragna. Si chiama “La polenta taragna orobica scende in città” alla quale hanno aderito oltre cinquanta ristoranti.

Fino al 21 marzo 2014 in questi locali sarà possibile degustare un piatto a base di polenta taragna.

Sperimentate la preparazione della polenta taragna: una ricetta tradizionale gustosissima!

Portare ad ebollizione 2 litri d’acqua, salare e versare 400 grammi di farina di mais. Mescolare di continuo per evitare la formazione di grumi. Portare a cottura. Tagliare 300 grammi di formaggi d’alpeggio a pezzetti e aggiungerli alla polenta. Amalgamare bene gli ingredienti e servire su un tagliere.

Why not try preparing polenta taragna, a very tasty traditional dish!

Bring 2 litres of water to the boil, add salt and pour in 400 g of maize flour. Stir continuously to prevent lumps forming until cooked. Cut 200 g of formaggio d’alpeggio (soft cheese made with the milk of cows grazed on alpine pastures) into cubes and add to the polenta. Mix well and serve on a wooden platter.

The origin of the name of Valcalepio, and area situated to the east of Bergamo, seems to come from the Greek meaning “good land, gentle land”. The area offers three main wines: red Valcalepio, white Valcalepio and Moscato di Scanzo. There are many opportunities for wine tasting at the local restaurants and wineries.

recisely in the same way as two centuries ago, when its responsibi-lity was to follow the progress of commercial, industrial and entrepreneurial activities, intervening with initiatives to support growth and development, the Chamber of Commerce pays particular attention to tourism and, specifically, devotes to this sector a series of initiatives aimed at increasing the quality of the tourist offer. When coming to Bergamo, look for the chamber quality marks such as “Bergamo Charme”, which qualifies tourist accommodation in important buildings such as residences of particular environmental charm, old country houses, historic villas and residences, apartments in buildings of considerable architectural importance, and buildings in urban contexts of significant historical value. Finally another interesting initiative is the quality mark “Ristorante dei Mille… Sapori” (Restaurant of a Thousand… flavours) whose aim is to present, valorise and promote gastronomic culture, local produce and hospitality. The theme of food “quality”, the topic of focus at Expo 2015, aims to enhance knowledge of food traditions as cultural and ethnic elements.

chilpario è un centro quieto e ordinato, dove si può trascorrere un piacevole soggiorno grazie anche ad un ambiente naturale ben conservato e dove alle testimonianze di antiche tradizioni fanno da cornice splendide montagne, tra le più belle del Bergamasco. La quota di 1.100 metri circa è inoltre ideale per la villeggiatura delle famiglie. La Valle di Scalve si può raggiungere (in auto, ma esiste anche un servizio di autobus) seguendo due diversi percorsi. Uno lungo il tracciato della vecchia statale del Tonale per buona parte sostituita da una moderna arteria che si immette nella bassa Valle Camonica. L’altro tracciato segue invece la strada della Valle Seriana che, toccando Clusone, capoluogo dell’alta valle, si inerpica fino al passo dominato dalla mole del Pizzo Presolana. La strada scende dentro la valle inanellando una serie di tornanti dalle ampie vedute lungo il versante settentrionale della Presolana. Dalla località Dezzo si riprende a salire e la valle si allarga sempre di più fino a giungere a Schilpario, l’ultimo paese della valle. La visita può incominciare percorrendo la via principale sulla quale si affaccia il nucleo più antico del paese. Un lavatoio ben restaurato testimonia i tempi in cui le donne vi si recavano non solo per fare il bucato ma anche per fare conoscenze, scambiare informazioni riferendo sugli eventi familiari e della comunità.

Più avanti la strada si allarga e si scorgono nuove costruzioni. La piazza principale è dominata dalla chiesa parrocchiale, di cui si ha notizia già nel ‘300; l’attuale risale al ‘600 con l’interno scandito da sei cappelle e dipinti realizzati dai pittori Carpinoni, Cifrondi e

delightful place for a holiday, Schilpario is a quiet, ordered town with an unspoilt natural beauty where exquisite mountains - among the most beautiful in Bergamo province - provide the backdrop for attractive traditional buildings. Its location at an altitude of 1,100 metres also makes it the ideal place for family holidays. The Scalve Valley can be reached (by car, but there’s also a bus service) along two different routes. One follows the old Tonale state road, a large part of which has been replaced by a modern arterial road that leads to the lower Camonica Valley. The other route instead travels along the Seriana Valley.

After Clusone, chief town of the upper valley, this road climbs towards a pass dominated by the massive presence of Mount Presolana. It then descends into the valley, snaking around a series of bends with extensive views across the northern slope of the Presolana. From Dezzo, the road climbs again and the valley opens up until it reaches Schilpario, the last town along this route. Your visit can begin with a walk along the main street, which is situated next to the oldest part of the town.

A beautifully restored washhouse bears witness to a time when women not only came here to do their washing, but also to make friends and chat about family and community events. Further ahead the road widens and the old gives way to new.

The main square is dominated by the parish church, records of which date back to the fourteenth century. The current building was built in the seventeenth century.

Querena, originari di Clusone, in Valle Seriana, mentre l’altare maggiore presenta intarsi marmorei e sculture di scuola fantoniana. A fianco, nell’antica chiesetta di San Rocco, il Museo d’Arte Sacra espone calici, paramenti, oggetti e suppellettili: interessanti testimonianze della liturgia nel corso degli ultimi quattro secoli.

Proseguendo nel cammino, si giunge nella piazzetta con il monumento che raffigura un orso, un tempo abitante indisturbato della Valle di Scalve, come testimonia la scritta alla base del monumento “Tutus in silvis”.

Questo motto fa capire anche perché gli abitanti di questa remota valle si sentissero al sicuro tra le foreste che ancora oggi coprono buona parte del territorio. Poco oltre il monumento dell’orso, l’edificio di un antico mulino ben restaurato ospita il Museo Etnografico, uno dei più importanti del Bergamasco.

La sezione riservata alle miniere consente di conoscere l’importante ruolo avuto dall’attività dei minatori per l’economia del paese e della valle. Questo settore invoglia sicuramente a visitare il Parco Minerario “Ing. A. Bonicelli” situato a non molta distanza dal paese e il Museo di Minerali e Cristalli nella frazione Pradella. Se si desidera organizzare diversamente la propria visita, per gli appassionati dello sci da fondo nella stagione invernale è disponibile il complesso della Pista degli Abeti che si snoda dentro la foresta ed è teatro di importanti gare anche a livello internazionale.

Qui sorgono un moderno e ben attrezzato centro servizi e il palazzetto del ghiaccio di 70 per 35 metri. Percorsi fuori pista o con le ciaspole sono offerti dalla splendida Conca dei Campelli mentre le montagne che fanno da corona sono l’ambiente ideale per lo scialpinismo. Una ampia rete di sentieri con accoglienti rifugi è l’ideale per gli escursionisti e gli alpinisti. La strada che porta al Passo del Vivione, aperta nella bella stagione, si presenta come un percorso ideale per gli appassionati di mountain bike. è percorribile anche con le

Nearby is the old church of San Rocco and the Sacred Art Museum, which exhibits interesting items linked to four centuries of worship, including chalices, vestments, objects and grave items.

Continuing your walk, you arrive at a square with a monument of a bear, once an undisturbed inhabitant of the Scalve Valley as testified by the inscription at the base of the monument “Tutus in silvis”, which means “safe in the forest”. This motto also explains why the inhabitants of this remote valley felt safe in the woods that today cover a large part of the land. After the bear monument, a carefully restored old mill building houses the Ethnography Museum, one of the most important in Bergamo province. The section dedicated to mining informs visitors of the important part played by mining in the economy of the town and valley. This section will certainly tempt visitors to visit the “Ing. A. Bonicelli” Mining Park, situated not far from the town, and the Museum of Minerals and Crystals in the district of Pradella. If you wish to plan a different kind of vacation, the “Pista degli Abeti” track is open to crosscountry ski enthusiasts during the winter season. This trail winds through the forest and holds important international races. Alongside the trail is a modern and wellequipped centre and a 70x35 metre ice-skating rink. Off-piste routes or snow shoe trails are found in the Campelli Basin, while the surrounding mountains are the ideal environment for ski mountaineering. Walkers and climbers will enjoy the vast network of paths and welcoming mountain refuges. The road leading to the Vivione Pass, which is open in the summer season, is perfect for mountain bike lovers. The road through the pass is also open to cars, and the mountain refuge situated at the top, at

auto: il rifugio, situato al culmine del valico a oltre 1.800 metri di quota, è una meta molto ambita. Lo stesso rifugio viene proposto come punto di partenza per spettacolari escursioni in quota. Numerosi ristoranti, alcuni dei quali nel cuore della pineta, offrono un’ampia possibilità di scelta per il pranzo. I menù sono quelli delle zone di montagna, con particolare attenzione ai prodotti bergamaschi. Non mancano i piatti tipici. Come i licheni conditi con olio e aglio: un’inconsueta insalata i cui componenti vengono raccolti in alta quota, verso i 1700-1800 metri. Altra specialità locale è la spalla cotta di maiale macerata nel vino con l’inserimento di spezie e poi insaccata. É servita con la tradizionale polenta. Tipica della zona la formaggella di Scalve, la cui produzione, iniziata negli alpeggi estivi, continua anche per tutto l’arco dell’anno, sempre riservando una particolare attenzione alla qualità e alla genuinità.

Some dishes have more unusual ingredients such as lichen, which is gathered at high altitude of 1,7001,800 metres and served seasoned with oil and garlic. Other local specialities include pork shoulder marinated in wine and spices and then made into a sausage, which is served with traditional polenta, and Scalve soft cheese, which is produced with milk made from cows grazing on mountain pastures and made all year round, with particular attention paid to wholesome natural ingredients.

There are various routes inside the Schilpario mines, which are all equipped with electric lighting; they also display photographs documenting the mine’s history and tools used in the mine, and feature the original railway with carriages and locomotives for transporting visitors. The Ethnography Museum is witness and custodian of the past and the historical and cultural heritage of the people of the Scalve Valley. With documents, photographs, work tools and everyday objects, the museum tells the story of the inhabitants of the area. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 9.00 to 12.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00. li sport della neve sulle montagne bergamasche sono molto diffusi e si possono trovare impianti di risalita e piste per la discesa e per lo sci da fondo lungo tutto l’arco delle Orobie. Ambienti molto vari e di grande suggestione dove trascorrere giornate indimenticabili sugli sci. Un’autentica vocazione allo sport e all’ospitalità offre agli appassionati e ai turisti la possibilità di weekend sulla neve passando non solo da un impianto all’altro ma di valle in valle.

Ogni località sciistica e ogni valle ha proprie caratteristiche inconfondibili: un patrimonio ambientale cui si affianca una straordinaria ricchezza d’arte e di storia. Senza dimenticare le opportunità di svago e di divertimento, apprezzando al tempo stesso l’ottima cucina alle cui radici sta la tradizione della gente di montagna. Non c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta che, qualunque essa sia, sarà sempre al meglio.

Ecco qualche spunto per una vacanza di due giorni sulla neve adatta a tutti i gusti.

now sports on the Bergamask mountains are extremely popular, and lifts and resorts for skiing and cross-country skiing can be found along the entire length of the Orobie range, which offers varied and incredibly striking environments for spending unforgettable days on skis. With a genuine vocation for sport and hospitality, the mountains offer enthusiasts and tourists the possibility of a weekend on the snow, passing not only from one resort to another, but also from valley to valley. Each skiing location and each valley has its own unmistakeable characteristics: an environmental heritage accompanied by an extraordinary abundance of art and history, together with plenty of opportunities for leisure and entertainment and for appreciating the excellent cuisine, which has its roots in the traditions of the mountain folk.

You’ll be spoilt for choice but, whatever you choose, it will always be the best.

Here are some ideas for a two-day holiday on the snow suited to all tastes.

Valle Brembana: sci e buona cucina La Valle Brembana è storica per gli sport invernali nella Bergamasca, ma è ancor più nota forse come “valle dei formaggi” per la produzione di ben quattro formaggi DOP. 1° giorno: la prima sciata è d’obbligo a Foppolo, che con i suoi impianti è tra le maggiori località sciistiche dell’arco alpino. Gli impianti di risalita arrivano fino a 2.100 metri di quota consentendo di utilizzare decine di chilometri di pista ben esposti al sole. Qui si può trascorrere una giornata sugli sci intrecciando discese in ambienti naturali molto suggestivi e, se si vuol variare, si può praticare pattinaggio o sci di fondo. Al termine della giornata ci godiamo un’ottima cena a base dei prodotti tipici e degli speciali formaggi di questa valle non dimenticandosi di assaggiare la polenta taragna che in questa area è rinomata. Completano la serata le discoteche e i locali per il doposci.

2° giorno: continuiamo, sci ai piedi, nel comprensorio Bremboski, che include anche gli impianti di San Simone-Valleve e di Carona, per un totale di 80 chilometri di piste. Da non perdere le località di Piazzatorre e anche di Valtorta, piccolo centro chiuso tra i monti dal quale gli impianti di risalita portano al comprensorio dei Piani di Bobbio. Nel pomeriggio potremmo fare visita ad alcuni caseifici di Branzi e della Val Taleggio per assaggiare il meglio della produzione casearia locale per poi scendere a cenare a San Pellegrino Terme, la celebre località termale, dove possiamo ammirare gli splendidi edifici Liberty che testimoniano i fasti che la cittadina visse durante le “Belle époque”.

Valle Brembana: skiing and good cuisine Valle Brembana is historically well known in Bergamo province for its winter sports, but it is even better known as “the valley of cheeses” for its production of some four PDO cheeses.

1st day: our first day’s skiing should take place in Foppolo, one of the major ski resorts of the Alpine region. The ski lifts climb up to 2,100 metres, giving skiers the opportunity to use dozens of kilometres of sun-kissed pistes. The day can be spent skiing, winding down slopes through striking natural environments, or there is the option for variation with ice-skating and cross-country skiing. At the end of the day an excellent meal made with traditional produce and the valley’s special cheeses can be enjoyed, without forgetting to taste polenta taragna, which is renowned in this area. Discotheques and after-ski clubs complete the evening.

2nd day: we continue on, with a ski on each foot, to the Bremboski area which also includes the San Simone-Valleve and Carona resorts, making a total of 80 kilometres of pistes. Piazzatorre and Valtorta, a small centre hidden away between the mountains, whose ski lifts reach the Piani di Bobbio resort, are not to be missed.

In the afternoon, we can visit a few dairies, such as Branzi and Val Taleggio, to taste the best of the local dairy produce, and then descend to the valley to dine in San Pellegrino Terme, the famous spa location, where we can admire splendid “Art Nouveau” buildings, testimony to the glories that the city experienced during the “Belle époque”.

Valle Seriana: sole, sci e benessere Le chiamano le piste nel sole quelle della Val Seriana, e la tintarella è garantita dall’ottima esposizione delle quattro skiarea: Monte Pora, Presolana, Lizzola, Spiazzi di Gromo.

1° giorno: calziamo subito gli sci e iniziamo dalla più nota delle piste della Presolana: Monte Pora, con i suoi grandi spazi sui quali sono state tracciate 14 piste, lunghe complessivamente 40 chilometri, tra vedute entusiasmanti sul massiccio della Presolana.

Breve pausa in rifugio e proseguiamo nel vicino Passo della Presolana: le piste, lunghe 15 chilometri, sono tra le preferite dalle famiglie; c’è tanto spazio perché i bambini si divertano.

Dopo la giornata di sport cosa c’è di meglio di un percorso benessere per rilassarsi e rigenerarsi, godendosi le cure e i prodotti naturali dell’ambiente montano.

2° giorno: eccoci quindi a Lizzola, sciando nello straordinario anfiteatro offerto da alcune tra le più alte cime delle Orobie.

Gli impianti di risalita sono 5, con 8 piste e 20 chilometri di discese con ampia possibilità di scelta tra tracciati dalle varie difficoltà.

In alternativa un ambiente più quieto è offerto dagli Spiazzi di Gromo, nella cui bella conca spaziano 15 chilometri di piste alla portata di tutti. Per la sera passeggiamo tra le stradine di Clusone, cittadina posta ad inizio valle, che offre, oltre al delizioso centro storico tanti caratteristici locali per cena e dopocena.

Valle Seriana: sun, ski and wellness They call the Valle Seriana pistes the ‘slopes in the sun’ and a tan is guaranteed thanks to the excellent exposure of the four ski areas: Monte Pora, Presolana, Lizzola and Spiazzi di Gromo.

1st day: we immediately strap on our skis and start from the best known resort of the Presolana area: Monte Pora with its wide slopes, out of which 14 pistes with a total length of 40 kilometres have been carved among exciting views of the Presolana mountain. After a brief stop in a mountain refuge, we continue on to nearby Passo della Presolana. The pistes here, which are 15 kilometres long, are preferred by families: there’s plenty of space for children to have fun.

After a day of sport, what could be better than a wellness experience for relaxation and regeneration, enjoying the treatments and natural products of the mountain environment?

2nd day: we arrive in Lizzola and ski in the extraordinary amphitheatre offered by some of the highest peaks in the Orobie range. There are 5 ski lifts, with 8 pistes and 20 kilometres of slopes, and a wide choice of trails of varying difficulty.

Alternatively, Spiazzi di Gromo offers a quieter environment, where 15 kilometres of slopes, suitable for all, extend along its beautiful valley. In the evening, we can walk through the alleyways of Clusone, a town located at the foot of the valley, which offers many characteristic places for dinner and after dinner, as well as a delightful historical centre.

Valle di Scalve: sci e antiche tradizioni L’appartata Valle di Scalve ha conservato intatte le sue caratteristiche di alta vallata alpina, intatta nella corona di alte cime di tipo dolomitico che racchiudono una delle più vaste pinete di Lombardia.

1° giorno: la regina delle piste da discesa della bergamasca è Colere con la sua Ski Area 2200, i cui impianti, come rivela il nome della stazione sciistica, portano fino ai 2.200 metri di altezza nel maestoso scenario del massiccio della Presolana.

Con piste omologate FISI, sciare qui accontenta sicuramente anche i più esperti.

2° giorno: per il giorno dopo cambiamo radicalmente e andiamo sull’altra pista da primato della valle, la pista da fondo che da Schilpario si addentra nella pineta con tracciati di varie difficoltà (uno anche agonistico) e con panorami naturali davvero speciali. La piccola Val di Scalve è ricca di tradizioni, la più affascinate è quella mineraria, da non perdere una visita alle antiche miniere; e per conoscere la vita vera degli abitanti di questo spicchio di Alpi concludiamo la nostra giornata con il Museo Etnografico, uno dei più interessanti d’Italia.

Valle di Scalve: skiing and ancient traditions The high Alpine valley features of secluded Valle di Scalve, set among a crown of high Dolomitic peaks that surround one of the largest pine forests in Lombardy, have been largely left unspoilt.

1st day: the queen of the downhill slopes in the province of Bergamo is Colere with its Ski Area 2200. Its lifts, as described by the ski resort’s name, take skiers up to 2,200 metres among the majestic scenery of the Presolana mountain. With FISI approved slopes, skiing here satisfies even the experts.

2nd day: for the next day we make a radical change and move to the other record-breaking piste of the valley: the cross-country skiing track which, from Schilpario, disappears into the pine forest, with trails of varying difficulties (including a competition one) and truly special natural panoramas. The small Val di Scalve is rich in traditions, the mining industry being the most fascinating one; a visit to the ancient mines is not to be missed.

To discover the real lives of the inhabitants of this part of the Alps, we conclude our day with a visit to the Ethnography Museum, one of the most interesting in Italy.

From 19 to 21 February 2014, Bergamo Chamber of Commerce, which for some time has been working on the Expo, is organising a great event to prepare local businesses and the local area during what is a fruitful time for the Bergamask economy.

Bergamo will welcome, at the Ente Fiera Promoberg (Promoberg Trade Fair Organisation),the 70 countries participating in Expo Milan 2015 in nine new themed “Cluster” spaces (Rice, Cocoa, Coffee, Cereals and Tubers, Fruit and pulses, Spices, OrganicMediterranean, Islands, sea and food, Agriculture and Nutrition in Arid Zones).

The “Cluster” participation model is one of the unique and innovative features of this Universal Exposition, which will be held in Milan from 1 May to 31 October 2015.

These spaces, by grouping the countries together according to a main theme - shared and representative - will enable them to work together, thereby strengthening the universal character of the Expo. This is the beginning for Bergamo of a journey towards the great event, which will welcome over 300 delegates from the nations participating in the Villages of the Expo. Meetings are planned over the course of three days for all delegates, as well as other encounters between countries belonging to the same themed group. It will be an occasion to establish the first relationships and contacts with countries in expansion and lay the foundations for building a path of collaboration, while savouring the excellent products and flavours of the Bergamo area.

It is an important event and an extraordinary occasion for promoting Bergamo and its economic and business activities on the world stage.

Chiesa di San Nicola Church of San Nicola Spicca, tra quinte di splendidi vigneti, la Chiesa di San Nicola, che risale al ‘500 e conserva al suo interno un rarissimo esempio d’organo cinquecentesco (1588), costruito dagli Antegnati.

The Church of San Nicola, which dates back to the sixteenth century, sits among splendid vineyards and preserves a rare example of a sixteenth-century organ, built by the Antegnati family.

Chiesa di San Giorgio Church of San Giorgio Conserva all’interno uno splendido ciclo di affreschi del XII e XIII secolo: vi spicca, tra l’altro, un grande San Giorgio su un cavallo bianco.

It preserves a splendid cycle of frescoes dating back to the XIIth and XIIth centuries, one of which depicts the great St. George on his white horse.

Tempio di San Tomè Church of San Tomè I costruttori della Rotonda di San Tomè, per la sua forma, si ispirarono al tempio del Santo Sepolcro in Gerusalemme.

The Rotonda of San Tomè, so called because of its circular shape, was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
