Una straordinaria sequenza di torri, campanili, cupole, palazzi che raccontano la storia dell’antica cittĂ . Le torri sono lĂŹ da secoli. Le chiamano “grattacieliâ€? dell’anno Mille e le innalzarono le famiglie piĂš ricche e potenti quando, divise dalle fazioni, si scontravano e si combattevano. In origine a Bergamo erano molte di piĂš, ma molte sono scomparse per crolli e demolizioni.

La piÚ nota è la Torre del Comune, detta anche del Campanone, che domina Piazza Vecchia nel cuore della città antica, ed è considerata il simbolo di Bergamo e della sua secolare storia. Tappa d’obbligo nella visita dei monumenti della Bergamo sul colle è il Mausoleo di Bartolomeo Colleoni. Ma oltre alla cappella che il condottiero fece costruire per celebrare la propria fama, merita una visita il suo Castello immerso nel verde della campagna a pochi chilometri da Bergamo. In questo numero di The Key vi consigliamo un viaggio nella pianura fino a Malpaga, dove sorge il Castello del Capitano Generale delle milizie di Venezia. Un maniero che fu forte presidio militare ma anche signorile dimora, come testimoniano gli affreschi che ne ornano gli interni. E dopo tanta storia il piacere di andare alla scoperta di un patrimonio del gusto tra gli squisiti formaggi che per antica tradizione vengono prodotti nella Bergamasca.

From the “skyscrapers� of the year one thousand to the castle of a warlord Even local residents are impressed by the skyline of Upper Bergamo when they look at it from afar. It is composed of an extraordinary sequence of towers, belfries, domes and buildings that illustrate the history of this ancient city.

The towers have been there for centuries. Known as the “skyscrapers� of the year one thousand, they were built by the town’s richest and most powerful families at a time when, divided into factions, there was many conflicts and skirmishes. Originally, there were many more of these towers in Bergamo, but several collapsed or were demolished.

The best known is the Municipal Tower, known also as the Campanone (Big Bell), which dominates Piazza Vecchia in the heart of the old town and is considered a symbol of Bergamo and its age-old history. An essential stop on a tour of hilltop Bergamo’s monuments is the Mausoleum of Bartolomeo Colleoni. But in addition to this chapel, which the warlord commissioned to celebrate his fame, a visit to his castle is also well worthwhile, which is situated in the green of the countryside a few kilometres from Bergamo. In this issue of The Key, we suggest taking a trip to the plain to Malpaga, the site of the Castle of Colleoni, who was CaptainGeneral of the militia of the Venetian Republic. This building was a powerful military fortress but also a refined home, as testified by the frescoes that adorn the interiors. And after all this history, we suggest going in search of Bergamo’s food heritage, tasting the exquisite cheeses that have long been produced in the area.

hi arriva a Bergamo dalla pianura resta sicuramente colpito dalle torri e dai campanili che spiccano nello skyline dell’antica città sul colle e che la rendono unica tra le città non solo della Lombardia ma di tutta l’area alpina. Un’immagine che, soprattutto per quanto riguarda le torri, rinvia molto indietro nel tempo evocando una storia secolare. Le hanno chiamate i “grattacieli” dell’anno Mille.

Un tempo erano molte di più, quelle che spiccano sopra i tetti della città antica sono le superstiti di una presenza che risale all’epoca Medievale. Costruite dalle famiglie più potenti, le case-torri servivano per la difesa ma erano anche un simbolo di prestigio. In tempi di forti contrasti tra le fazioni dei Guelfi, che parteggiavano per il papa, e dei Ghibellini, dalla parte dell’imperatore, Bergamo fu teatro di sanguinosi scontri, di agguati e di assalti. Oltre che per controllare i movimenti degli avversari e colpirli dall’alto, le torri venivano utilizzate per resistere a prolungati assedi. L’esempio più evidente è la grandiosa torre che si innalza nel cuore della città antica all’altezza di quello che fu il più importante incrocio della Bergamo romana, dove il cardo (l’asse urbano nord-sud) incontrava il decumano (l’asse est-ovest). La Torre di Gombito ha preso il nome da questo incrocio rimasto immutato nei secoli. Si presenta quasi senza aperture, con accanto la residenza fortificata della famiglia che l’aveva fatta costruire. Alta in origine 64 metri, nell’Ottocento fu ridotta agli attuali 52 metri per motivi di sicurezza: ma anche così si resta impressionati dalla sua mole compatta di pietre ben squadrate. Nella vicina Piazza Mercato del Fieno si trova un esempio molto ben conservato di casa-torre. Anzi, le torri sono due, ben conservate.

It is an image that, particularly in the case of the towers, takes one far back in time to recall an ancient history. They are known as the “skyscrapers� of the year one thousand. Many years ago there were many more; those rising up above the roofs of the old city are survivors from the Middle Ages. Built by powerful families, these house-towers were used for defence purposes, but they were also a symbol of prestige. During the time of conflict between the factions of the Guelphs, who supported the Pope, and the Ghibellines, who were on the side of the Holy Roman Emperor, Bergamo was the stage for bloody clashes, ambushes and attacks. The towers were not only used for withstanding long sieges, but also for controlling the movements of opponents and attacking them from above. The most evident example is the majestic tower that stands in the heart of the old city at the site of the most important crossroads of Roman Bergamo, where the cardo (the north-south oriented road) met the decumanus (the street running east-west). The Gombito Tower took its name from this crossroads, which has remained unchanged over the centuries. It appears as an almost windowless building, with a fortified residence alongside that once belonged to the family that built it. Originally 64 metres high, in the nineteenth century it was reduced to its current 52 metres for safety reasons, but even at this height, visitors are struck by its compact bulk made up of large blocks of stone. Aperture realizzate in tempi meno bellicosi ne hanno ingentilito l’aspetto. Nella muraglia massiccia spicca un elegante balconcino sormontato da una bifora; alla base l’attenzione è richiamata dalla bottega dell’ultimo fabbro che ancora lavora con il martello il ferro scaldato sul fuoco. Analoghe costruzioni erano sparse per tutta la città medievale, ma oggi non ne resta che la memoria in antichi documenti e in resti di muri inglobati in altri edifici.

Una torre appartenente alle prime difese cittadine sembra dare il benvenuto a chi entra nella Bergamo antica da Colle Aperto. Si tratta della Torre di Adalberto dal nome del vescovo che la fece costruire; non molto

Windows added in less bellicose times have softened its appearance. An elegant balcony in the solid wall, which is overlooked by a mullioned window, catches the eye; at its base attention is drawn to the workshop of the town’s last blacksmith still forging metal heated on a fire.

Similar buildings were once found all over the medieval city, but today all that remains is the memory in ancient documents and some fragments of walls absorbed by other buildings.

Colle Aperto. This is the Adalberto Tower, which was named after the bishop who commissioned its construction. Another, even more mighty, tower stood not far away.

Transformed into a belfry for the basilica housing the body of St. Alexander, the patron saint of Bergamo, it was demolished together with the church in 1561 when the Venetian Republic began building the walls. Four towers dominated the nearby Hill of San Giovanni and were part of the grand fortified construction called “Firma Fides”, which was built by the Visconti family, Lords of Milan. No trace is left of these two towers, nor another two situated on the slope below; only the Campanella Tower remains, which lies between the Cittadella (Citadel) and Piazza Mascheroni.

Quattro torri dominavano il vicino Colle di San Giovanni ed erano comprese nella grandiosa opera fortificata chiamata “Firma Fides” fatta erigere dai Visconti, i signori di Milano. Di queste torri, assieme ad altre due sul sottostante pendio non è rimasta traccia. Sopravvive solo la Torre della Campanella sopra il passaggio tra la Cittadella e l’attuale Piazza Mascheroni.

Molto nota è la torre che domina Piazza Vecchia e che è un po’ il simbolo di Città Alta.

Si tratta della torre municipale.

Alta 54 metri, fu fatta costruire dalla potente famiglia Suardi, che dovette poi cederla al Comune. Trasformata per gli usi civici, sulla sua sommità furono collocate le campane che per secoli scandirono la vita cittadina.

Per antichissima tradizione, ancora oggi tutte le sere alle ore 22 la campana maggiore suona il Coprifuoco.

Sono 180 poderosi rintocchi che i rumori della città moderna non riescono a coprire. La torre è detta anche del Campanone: un moderno ascensore porta i visitatori sulla sua sommità, da dove si godono bellissime vedute. Pure aperta al pubblico è la Torre di Gombito: durante la bella stagione e in orari stabiliti si può essere accompagnati da una guida fin sulla cima. ue straordinari monumenti hanno reso celebre a un numero infinito di turisti la figura di Bartolomeo Colleoni, il grande Signore della guerra: la statua in Campo San Giovanni e Marco a Venezia, dove il Verrocchio l’ha raffigurato a cavallo con le insegne di Capitano Generale al servizio della Repubblica, e la splendida cappella funebre nel cuore della Bergamo antica, capolavoro del Rinascimento lombardo. Molti dei turisti che salgono a Bergamo alta non conoscono invece il castello che per quasi trent’anni fu la fastosa residenza del condottiero. Si trova a Malpaga, a pochi chilometri da Bergamo, immerso nella campagna che, nonostante le trasformazioni subite nel corso dei secoli, mantiene ancora atmos-fere e paesaggi di un tempo. I luoghi e la dimora di Bartolomeo Colleoni possono essere visitati nel corso dell’anno e ogni stagione ha il suo fascino. Si va dalla primavera, che riveste di tenero verde i campi, al pieno rigoglio dell’estate, ai colori sfumati dell’autunno e alle nebbie invernali che celano la mole del castello lasciando intravedere solo le possenti muraglie sormontate dai merli. Forse è proprio questa la stagione con le sue atmosfere ovattate che più di altre lascia immaginare il condottiero procedere a cavallo lungo i viottoli, seguito dalla sua fedele scorta. Bartolomeo Colleoni amava questa campagna e, lontano dai rumori della guerra, si dedicava a opere di pace migliorando le coltivazioni con importanti lavori di irrigazione, facendo scavare nuove rogge e canali per portare l’acqua tra i campi.

Quando l’acquistò nel 1456, il Castello di Malpaga era poco più di un rudere. Ma aveva il vantaggio di trovarsi in posizione strategica, al centro del feudo che Venezia gli aveva

wo extraordinary monuments have made Bartolomeo Colleoni, the great warlord, known to an infinite number of tourists: the statue in Campo San Giovanni e Marco in Venice, where Verrocchio portrayed him on horseback with the insignia of Captain-General of the Republic, and the splendid burial chapel in the heart of old Bergamo, a Lombardy Renaissance masterpiece. Many tourists, instead, know nothing of the castle that, for almost thirty years, was his sumptuous residence. It is situated in Malpaga, a few kilometres from Bergamo, and surrounded by countryside that, in spite of changes over the centuries, has retained the atmosphere and scenery of times gone by. The places and former home of Bartolomeo Colleoni can be visited throughout the year and each season has its charm: from spring, which clothes the fields in tender green, to the full luxuriance of summer, the muted colours of autumn or the mists of winter that shroud the castle revealing only its mighty walls topped by battlements.

It is this season, perhaps, with its cocoon-like environment, which more than any other allows us to imagine the leader riding along the lanes followed by his faithful guards. Bartolomeo Colleoni loved this countryside and, far from the noise of war, was dedicated to peaceful work, improving the crops with irrigation works by digging ditches and channels to bring water to the fields. When in 1456 he purchased the Castle of Malpaga, it was little more than a ruin.

But it had the advantage of being located in a strategic position, in the centre of the fiefdom that Venice had given him when he was appointed Captain-General. It was a vast area where some of the most important towns in that section of plain were found: Romano di Lombardia,

Si trattava di un vasto territorio sul quale si trovavano alcuni dei più importanti paesi in quel tratto della pianura bergamasca: Romano di Lombardia, Martinengo, Cologno, Urgnano, Calcinate, Covo, Antegnate, Cavernago. Ed è proprio da quest’ultima località, dove sorge un castello che fu di proprietà del Colleoni, che consigliamo la visita percorrendo una vecchia strada che, sia pur asfaltata, non ha perso il suo volto di antico itinerario di campagna. Qua e là rossi cascinali, testimonianze di vecchi coltivi, filari di alberi e, in lontananza, un complesso di edifici sui quali spiccano i merli del castello.

Non appena Bartolomeo Colleoni entrò in possesso del Castello di Malpaga diede inizio a imponenti lavori che trasformarono la malconcia fortezza in splendida dimora, degna di uno dei maggiori Signori della guerra del ‘400. Circondato da un profondo fossato, munito di una massiccia torre, l’accesso sbarrato da ponti levatoi: il castello era imprendibile anche per la presenza di un secondo fossato, più esterno, ora scomparso. Ma la sua maggiore difesa erano i fedeli soldati che il condottiero sistemò tutto attorno in un solido perimetro di edifici dove erano collocati gli alloggi per gli armigeri e le stalle per i cavalli.

Ancora oggi il castello e il suo presidio appaiono formidabili. Colpisce il grande perimetro di edifici destinati ad accogliere le truppe, oggi abbandonati dopo aver ospitato fin a qualche decennio fa un gran numero di famiglie di contadini con le stalle, i fienili, i magazzini di cereali e i depositi. C’è un profondo silenzio, come pure è silenzioso il castello, aperto al pubblico nel pomeriggio dei giorni festivi. Oltre il ponte levatoio che ancora oggi come un tempo protegge l’ingresso principale, il visitatore è accolto da affreschi ben conservati che ornano quello che doveva essere il posto di guardia. Oltre si apre un cortile dove spicca un grande dipinto eseguito da Girolamo di Romano, detto Il Romanino, artista del ‘500 molto

Martinengo, Cologno, Urgnano, Calcinate, Covo, Antegnate, Cavernago. And it is precisely this latter town, where Colleoni’s castle is found, that we suggest visiting, following an old road that, although tarmacked today, has not lost the appeal of an old country lane. It is interspersed with red-bricked farmsteads, the scene of old cultivations, rows of trees and, far off, a complex of buildings, including the battlements of the castle.

As soon as Bartolomeo Colleoni took possession of Malpaga Castle, he began impressive work to transform the dilapidated fortress into a splendid residence worthy of one of the greatest warlords of the fifteenth century. Surrounded by a deep moat, equipped with a solid tower and entrances protected by drawbridges, and further assisted by a second outer moat, now vanished, the castle was impregnable. But its greatest defence were the faithful soldiers that the leader positioned around the solid perimeter of buildings, which housed lodgings for the armigers and stables for the horses.

Today the castle and its garrison are formidable. The large perimeter of buildings designed for housing the troops are still striking. Today they are abandoned, but until a short time ago they were home to a large number of farming families and used as stables, hay barns, cereal deposits and stores. There is a deep silence here, just as the castle is silent, which is only open to the public on Sunday afternoons. In addition to the drawbridge, which still today protects the main entrance, visitors are welcomed by well-preserved frescoes that decorate what was once the guard post. Beyond this lies a courtyard where a large painting is found by Girolamo di Romano, also known as Il Romanino and a much respected sixteenth-century artist.

apprezzato. Al Romanino i discendenti del Colleoni affidarono l’incarico di raffigurare episodi della vita dell’illustre antenato. Numerosissimi affreschi ornano gli ambienti ai piani superiori, dove spicca il salone d’onore con le immagini della visita di re Cristiano di Danimarca, interessantissimo documento della vita che si svolgeva nel castello che Colleoni aveva trasformato in corte principesca, dove amava accogliere artisti e letterati. Suggestiva la piccola stanza dove il Capitano Generale morì: vi spicca un prezioso dipinto della Madonna con il Bambino. Per chi desidera sostare, una caratteristica osteria-trattoria ospitata in un edificio appartenuto all’antico borgo di Malpaga offre la possibilità di degustare piatti della tradizione bergamasca. A breve distanza una locanda con ristorante consente un soggiorno con vista sul castello. La visita può proseguire nel cuore della pianura con tappe all’interno dell’antico feudo colleonesco. Tra le tappe più interessanti Romano di Lombardia, con la sua rocca, e Martinengo, dove il Colleoni costruì numerosi edifici tra cui la Casa del Capitano. Secondo una leggenda raccontata ancora oggi dai più anziani vi sarebbe celata una spada d’oro che appartenne al celebre condottiero.

Il gioiello di Martinengo: la chiesa dell’Incoronata The gem of Martinengo: the Church of the “Incoronata” A pochi chilometri da Malpaga da non perdere la meravigliosa Chiesa dell’Incoronata di Martinengo. Si trova nell’omonimo convento fondato da Bartolomeo Colleoni nel 1475 come rifugio per i pellegrini sul percorso antico della Via Francesca. All’interno conserva straordinari affreschi di diverse epoche (magnifici quelli di Pietro Baschenis).

The wonderful Incoronata Church of Martinengo is found only a few kilometres from Malpaga.

It is situated in the convent of the same name, which was founded by Bartolomeo Colleoni in 1475 as a refuge for pilgrims on the old route of Via Francesca. It houses extraordinary frescos from different eras (those by Pietro Baschenis are magnificent).

o scorso mese di febbraio presso l’Ente Fiera di Bergamo, quasi 400 rappresentanti di oltre settanta Paesi sono stati ospiti della nostra città per organizzare la loro presenza all’evento mondiale del 2015 nelle varie aree tematiche, i Cluster.

Un’occasione unica che Bergamo ha saputo cogliere con un sapiente gioco di squadra per presentare al meglio le potenzialità delle nostre imprese, le strutture di accoglienza e ospitalità, la cultura e la bellezza del territorio, le tradizioni della nostra gastronomia, le nuove tecnologie al servizio della nutrizione e della biodiversità.

Un evento di successo che ha lasciato un ottimo ricordo di sé ai rappresentanti Expo dei Paesi Cluster ed ha dimostrato che Bergamo e il territorio sono pronti ad accoglierli quando ritorneranno in Italia in occasione dell’Esposizione Universale 2015. Bergamo è entrata nella mappa internazionale, ora spetta, a tutte le componenti economiche e sociali bergamasche, dalle istituzioni al mondo imprenditoriale e ai cittadini, giocarsi al meglio le proprie potenzialità per diventare protagonisti attivi di Expo 2015.

by Bergamo with skilful organisation and the potential of local businesses, the reception and hospitality structures, the culture and beauty of the land, the traditions of local gastronomy, and the new technologies serving the nutrition sector and biodiversity were presented. It was successful event that will be remembered by the Expo representatives of the cluster countries, which demonstrated that Bergamo and its province are ready to welcome them when they return to Italy for the 2015 Universal Exposition. Bergamo has become a player on the world stage, and now all the social and economic components of Bergamo, which range from institutions to the business world and citizens, must use their potential to the best of their ability to become active protagonists of Expo 2015.

Nel campo dei formaggi noti gastronomi e chef titolati riconoscono alla provincia di Bergamo una leadership unica. Il territorio può infatti vantare la presenza di ben nove formaggi a denominazione d’origine protetta (da ciò l’acronimo Dop). Si tratta di un marchio prestigioso, affermato a livello europeo, che sancisce le peculiarità di formaggi le cui caratteristiche qualitative dipendono essenzialmente dall’ambito in cui sono prodotti, dove fattori naturali, ambientali e tecniche di lavorazione li rendono unici. Esemplare, ad esempio, la vicenda dello “Strachitunt” (o stracchino rotondo: una forma che non ha riscontro altrove), l’ultimo formaggio che è andato ad impreziosire la “collana” dei Dop bergamaschi. Di questo formaggio si ha notizia già in tempi antichissimi, ma la sua conoscenza è rimasta a lungo limitata all’area ristretta di produzione (quattro piccoli comuni della Val Taleggio). Al punto che fino a pochi anni or sono finiva sulle tavole di pochi, fortunati estimatori. Anzi, il suo destino sembrava segnato se non fosse stato per una irriducibile famiglia di casari che ne continuava la tradizione. L’averlo rintracciato e fatto conoscere è senza dubbio un evento che va a merito di quanti stanno scandagliando il sorprendente patrimonio gastronomico della montagna.

Jewels, or rather, a treasure for the increasingly large number of gourmets in search of genuine quality products, such as the cheeses that originate in the mountain fields and those produced on the plain, which are part of a long history of age-old traditions and careful exploitation of the pastures. In the cheese sector, well-known gastronomes and celebrated chefs recognise the province of Bergamo as being a unique leading producer.

The area, in fact, has some nine types of cheese with protected designation of origin (from which the acronym Dop). This is a prestigious mark, established at a European level, which approves the unique quality of cheeses whose qualitative features essentially depend on the area in which they are produced, where natural and environmental factors and processing techniques make them unique. Exemplary, for example, is the story of “Strachitunt” (or round stracchino cheese: a shape found nowhere else), the latest cheese to enhance the series of Bergamask Dop cheeses. This cheese has been known since ancient times, but only in its small area of production (four small municipalities in the Taleggio Valley), and until a few years ago ended up on the table of only a few lucky admirers. In fact, its destiny seemed doomed until an undaunted family of dairy farmers continued the tradition. The fact of having traced it and made it known is without doubt an event for which those who are exploring the surprising gastronomic heritage of the mountains deserve credit. The extraordinary quality of this blue cheese with an intense aroma and unmistakeable taste has converted well-known chefs, who have brought it to international attention and won over the palates of experts and gourmets. Tokyo e a Londra ne hanno consacrato il successo. Successo confermato anche da altre antiche produzioni che hanno pure ottenuto il riconoscimento Dop. Sempre nella Val Taleggio nasce il Taleggio, che prende il nome dalla valle stessa e già nel ‘400 veniva portato sulle tavole dei Visconti, i Signori di Milano, di cui erano ghiotti.

E addirittura nello Strachitunt si vedono le origini di un altro celebre formaggio di fama internazionale: il Gorgonzola. Non è da meno la Valle Brembana, dove nell’alta qualità dei pascoli ha origine il formaggio Bitto. Una qualità che richiama anche le mandrie che provengono dalla Valtellina continuando all’inizio dell’estate l’antichissimo rito della transumanza. Nasce sugli stessi pascoli il Formai de mut (letteralmente Formaggio di monte), affiancato dal Branzi, altro formaggio dalla forte personalità anche se non ha conseguito la denominazione Dop. Ogni autunno nel paese di Branzi (si noti: ha lo stesso nome del formaggio), si tiene una straordinaria fiera, antico punto di incontro di allevatori e di produttori, oltre che di un gran numero di buongustai. Lo stretto legame tra la montagna e la pianura bergamasca, dove scendevano (e molti lo fanno ancora) per svernare mandriani e pastori con il loro gregge, trova riscontro nei numerosi formaggi Dop che qui hanno la loro tradizionale area di produzione: Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, Quartirolo Lombardo, Provolone Valpadana, Salva Cremasco.

Also from the Taleggio Valley comes Taleggio, which takes its name from the same valley and, already by the fifteenth century, was found on the tables of the Visconti family, the Lords of Milan, who were very fond of it. Strachitunt cheese gave rise to another internationally renowned cheese: Gorgonzola. No less important, the Brembana Valley produces Bitto cheese, made from the milk of cows grazing on its high quality pastures. The same quality pastures also attract the herds coming from Valtellina, continuing, at the beginning of summer, the very old ritual of “transumanza� (the twice-yearly migration of the herds). Formai de mut (literally mountain cheese) originates from the same pastures, as does Branzi, another cheese with a strong personality even though it has not achieved Dop designation. Each autumn in the town of Branzi (which has the same name as the cheese), an extraordinary fair is held, which is an opportunity for breeders and producers to meet, as well as a large number of foodies. The close ties between the mountain and the Bergamask plain, where the animals and their herders descended (and still do today) to spend winter with their herds, is reflected in the numerous Dop cheeses that are traditionally produced here: Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, Quartirolo Lombardo, Provolone Valpadana, Salva Cremasco. although they do not have international recognition, deserve a place on the table.

These include Formaggella from the Scalve Valley (a soft cheese), Stracchino Bronzone from the lake area, Torta Orobica with a delicate flavour, and Scalet, a cheese with a characteristic shape of a truncated pyramid, from the upper Seriana Valley. These are found in specialised shops in Bergamo, in the valleys and throughout the Orobie mountain range. Don’t forget to stop in the various cooperative dairies to ask for information and have a taste of the products - it’s an experience not to be missed.

Often you’ll find the producer on the other side of the sales counter, who alternates the production of cheese with direct contact with the consumer. There is nothing better than the benefit of his experience before setting out along the infinite number of itineraries of taste and authenticity.
