Editoriale _ Una buona sosta a Bergamo e un viaggio nella spiritualitĂ Anche se qua e lĂ il toponimo sopravvive, sono da tempo scomparsi i locali che avevano come insegna “sostaâ€?. Si trovavano dove, prima dello sviluppo dell’auto, si fermavano le diligenze per far riposare i cavalli e anche i passeggeri.

E, naturalmente, la “sostaâ€? forniva la possibilitĂ di un pasto. Da questo ebbero origine trattorie e ristoranti disseminati lungo le strade e presenti soprattutto in prossimitĂ di incroci. Una consuetudine che ancora sopravvive, ma oggi la collocazione di ristoranti, trattorie, locali di ristoro segue un’altra logica. A Bergamo, ad esempio, sono distribuiti nelle aree di maggior afflusso e, in particolare, nell’alta cittĂ dove si concentra la presenza dei turisti e negli antichi borghi.

Un’occasione per avvicinare il patrimonio storico e artistico cittadino e, al tempo stesso, di conoscere il meglio della cucina bergamasca. Ma in questi mesi suggeriamo anche la Bergamasca come terra di forte spiritualitĂ . Se sono sempre numerosi i pellegrini diretti ai santuari, tra i quali il piĂš noto e frequentato è quello di Caravaggio, una delle mete che richiamano una gran folla è il paese di Sotto il Monte, dove è nato Papa Giovanni XXIII, che sta per essere proclamato Santo. Ăˆ stato invece beatificato il 21 settembre Fra Tommaso da Olera, le cui origini sono nel piccolo borgo di Olera, che ha mantenuto intatte le caratteristiche medievali e dove è conservato un bellissimo polittico del pittore veneto Cima da Conegliano.

An excellent place to stop in Bergamo and a journey of spirituality Even though names survive here and there, places with the sign “sosta� (staging post) disappeared some time ago. Before the advent of the car, they were stations where carriages would stop for the horses and passengers to rest, and naturally the staging post also provided a meal. These places gave rise to the trattorias and restaurants found today along roads and above all near crossroads. This custom still survives, but today the locating of restaurants, trattorias and cafeterias often follows another rationale. In Bergamo, for example, they are distributed in the areas of greatest flow and, in particular, in upper Bergamo, where the highest numbers of tourists are found, and in the old districts. They offer visitors the opportunity to discover the historic and artistic heritage of the city and, at the same time, learn more about the local cuisine of Bergamo. We also suggest visiting Bergamo province in its guise as a land of powerful spirituality at this time of the year. While many pilgrims visit the sanctuaries, including the best known and popular sanctuary in Caravaggio, one of the destinations that attracts crowds is the town of Sotto il Monte, the birthplace of Pope John XXIII, who is about to be proclaimed a saint.

On 21 September, instead, Brother Tommaso da Olera was beatified. He was born in the small village of Olera, which has managed to preserve its medieval features and where a very beautiful polyptych by the Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Cima, also known as Cima da Conegliano, can be found.

apitava un tempo di trovare nei piatti più genuini della cucina bergamasca un pizzico d’Oriente. Non che Bergamo sia mai stata a contatto diretto con i paesi d’Arabia ma, grazie al fatto che la città aveva rapporti diretti con Venezia e il suo porto, le cuoche di un tempo conservano la memoria di antiche consuetudini aggiungendo spezie ai loro intingoli. Oltre al diffusissimo pepe, tra gli ingredienti più usati compariva la cannella, o cinnamomo, che troviamo in alcuni dei piatti proposti in un ricettario bergamasco di fine Ottocento. Naturalmente nella tradizione culinaria bergamasca va sempre tenuto d’occhio il territorio e i

here once was a time when a hint of the Orient was found in many of the wholesome dishes of Bergamask cuisine. Bergamo has never had direct contact with Arab countries, but due to the fact that it had direct links with Venice and its port, local chefs preserve the memory of old customs by adding spices to their sauces. In addition to commonly used pepper, one of the ingredients most used is cinnamon, which appeared in some of the dishes featured in a late nineteenth-century recipe book. The local area extends from the plain to the hills and from the mountains to the lakes and so, naturally, the produce used in the local cuisine is very varied. We begin with two traditional first courses, which

are very similar in type, but with very different ingredients: casoncelli (casonsei in the Bergamask dialect), ravioli-type pasta filled with bread, Grana Padano cheese, meat and either raisins or Amaretti biscuits, a type of pasta widely found in the Alpine area, and “scarpinocc”, pasta with a “magro” or “lean” filling, i.e., without meat, only cheese, egg, bread crumbs and spices. This pasta is specific to the old town of Parre and it takes its name from its shape, which is similar to the footwear worn by the local people who worked in the fields. These types of pasta, with or without meat, are best served with melted butter, sage and, of course, plenty of Grana Padano cheese.

Iniziamo con i due tradizionali primi piatti, molto simili, ma assai diversi nei contenuti; si tratta dei casoncelli (casonsei in dialetto bergamasco), diffusi nell’area alpina: pasta con ripieno di pane, grana padano, carne, e, a seconda, con uvetta o amaretti; si affiancano gli “scarpinocc”, un casoncello con ripieno “magro”, ossia senza carne: ma solo formaggio, uova, pan grattato e spezie. Questo raviolo è caratteristico dell’antico paese di Parre; il nome deriva dalla tipica forma che richiama le calzature indossate un tempo dagli abitanti, la cui attività principale era la pastorizia.

Alcuni primi piatti bergamaschi: i casoncelli e gli scarpinocc di Parre. Entrambi ravioli buonissimi, gli uni di carne e gli altri di magro. Qui accanto anche la Torta Donizetti.

Visitors in search of local customs should definitely try a second course with polenta. This ancient staple made with maize flour has lost its original rustic nature because, in recent years, particular care has been paid to the raw material. Polenta taragna, made with maize and buckwheat flour and often with the addition of cheese, originates in the Valtellina area, but is also widely found in the Bergamask valleys and Bergamo. This dish of mountain people and herders is robust and frugal, as well as being extremely tasty.

Cheeses are very popular in the area and given particular attention. Bergamo province takes first place in Italy for the number of products marked with Denominazione

I casoncelli, con o senza ripieno di carne, vengono serviti con burro fuso, salvia e, naturalmente, grana padano abbondante.

Per i secondi piatti il viaggiatore in cerca di consuetudini locali non può non gustare la polenta. Un cibo antico, che ha perso la sua originale rusticità per il fatto che negli ultimi anni è stata riservata una particolare cura alla materia prima. Sulle tavole bergamasche si incontra anche la polenta taragna, la cui area d’origine è la Valtellina, ed è molto diffusa anche nelle valli bergamasche giungendo fino a Bergamo, dove è una presenza abituale. Questo piatto da montanari e da pastori è frugale e robusto, oltre che molto appetitoso.

Una particolare attenzione va riservata alla tradizione dei formaggi.

Per numero di prodotti contrassegnati dalla Denominazione d’origine protetta (DOP) la Bergamasca è al primo posto in Italia. I formaggi con questa distinzione che esalta qualità e tradizione sono ben nove. Un’eccellenza invidiabile, che copre un po’ tutto il territorio dalla montagna

alla pianura. Dietro ciascuno di questi formaggi c’è una lunga storia di pascoli in quota, di erbe profumate, di bestiame tenuto con ogni cura, di fatica e di grande passione. Come testimonia la vicenda dell’ultimo formaggio che ha ottenuto il prestigioso riconoscimento della DOP. Si tratta dello “Strachitunt”, un prodotto d’alpeggio d’antichissima origine (le prime notizie sul suo conto risalgono addirittura al 1380), fortunosamente salvato quando ormai la tradizione veniva tramandata da una sola famiglia di montanari e salito in breve a fama internazionale fino ad essere apprezzato a New York e a Tokyo.

E per i vini? Anche qui è d’obbligo far riferimento alla tradizione. C’è una buona possibilità di scelta, ma si punta soprattutto sul Valcalepio DOC (Denominazione d’origine controllata), un vino ideale per i piatti della cucina bergamasca, ma non solo. La Valle Calepio si presenta con una bella fascia collinare ottimamente esposta e il cui clima è temperato dalla vicinanza del Lago Sebino. La coltivazione delle vigne qui è secolare: un’autentica vocazione ben nota allo stesso Bartolomeo Colleoni, il celebre condottiero che fu a capo, tra l’altro, degli eserciti di Venezia.

Qui era solito fornirsi di vini per la propria tavola al Castello di Malpaga, dove ebbe illustri ospiti, tra cui anche Re Giovanni di Danimarca. Senza dubbio al turista

pastures, fragrant herbs, carefully tended herds, fatigue and great passion, as demonstrated by the latest cheese to achieve this prestigious recognition: “Strachitunt”. The method of production of this very ancient dairy product (records date back even to 1380) was in the hands of only one family of mountain-dwellers, but fortunately it has now been saved from extinction. The cheese has gained international recognition in a short time and is now enjoyed in places from New York to Tokyo.

And the wines? There’s a good selection of traditional local wines, but one of the best known is Valcalepio DOC (Designation of Controlled Origin), partly because it pairs extremely well with Bergamask cuisine. The Calepio Valley is a beautiful band of hills with excellent sun exposure where, due to its proximity to Lake Iseo, the climate is mild. The tradition of cultivating grapes in this area is centuries old and was well known even to Bartolomeo Colleoni, the celebrated “condottiero” who led the armies of Venice. He would come here to stock up on wines for his table in Malpaga Castle, where he received illustrious guests, including King John of Denmark. Visitors are recommended - and with good reason - to try the wellknown Moscato di Scanzo, an excellent “passito” wine made with dried grapes.

viene raccomandato, e a buona ragione, il celebre Moscato di Scanzo, un’eccellenza tra i passiti, molto gradito all’imperatrice di Russia, la grande Caterina, alla quale fu presentato da Giacomo Quarenghi, l’architetto bergamasco che contribuì con i suoi capolavori alla costruzione di San Pietroburgo. Si vuole che il vitigno del Moscato, prodotto nelle vigne che si estendono sui colli del paese di Scanzorosciate, sia stato introdotto dai Romani, o forse addirittura dagli Etruschi.

Il Moscato di Scanzo è un imperdibile vino da meditazione e al tempo stesso l’ideale per apprezzare i dolci della tradizione bergamasca.

This wine was much loved by the Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great, when it was presented to her by Giacomo Quarenghi, the architect from Bergamo who, with his masterpieces, contributed to the construction of St. Petersburg. Legend has it that the Moscato vines grown in the vineyards that extend over the hills above the town of Scanzorosciate were introduced by the Romans, or even the Etruscans.

Moscato di Scanzo is an excellent “meditation” wine and, at the same time, an excellent accompaniment for traditional desserts of Bergamo.

key info UN DOLCE DAL NOME SALATO/A SWEET WITH A SALTY NAME Tra i dolci della tradizione bergamasca meritano di essere nominati la Torta Donizetti (in onore del grande compositore) e un dolce veramente singolare noto come “polenta e uccelli”, dall’inconfondibile colore giallo che ricorda proprio quello della polenta.

La “polenta e osei” è preparata con pan di Spagna, creme al cioccolato, burro, nocciola e l’aggiunta di rum; il tutto è ricoperto da marzapane giallo e zucchero giallo in cristalli; gli uccelletti posati sul culmine sono fatti di marzapane e cioccolato. Il dolce si trova nelle migliori pasticcerie, soprattutto di Bergamo Alta, anche in mini-confezioni da portarsi via... che dolce ricordo!

Among the traditional sweets from Bergamo worthy of mentioning are Donizetti Cake (in honour of the great composer) and a very unique cake known as “polenta e osei” (polenta and birds), with an unmistakeable yellow colour that looks exactly like polenta.

“Polenta e osei” is prepared with sponge cake, chocolate cream, butter, hazelnuts and rum, and covered with yellow marzipan and yellow sugar crystals; the birds sitting on the top are made of marzipan and chocolate.

The sweet is found in all the best patisseries, particularly in upper Bergamo, and also in mini-portions to take home… as a sweet souvenir!

CUCINA CHE PASSIONE!/COOKING, WHAT PASSION! La tradizione culinaria bergamasca è tramandata in un ricettario di fine Ottocento scritto da una padrona di casa che nella buona cucina vedeva anche uno strumento per riunire la famiglia e darle un’identità: dalla preparazione del cibo all’incontro attorno al tavolo, trasmesso dalla stessa alla figlia e quindi alla nipote.

Tre generazioni identificate nel cibo che è specchio della tradizione alimentare locale, delle abitudini e del territorio, perché gli ingredienti erano rigorosamente legati alla stagione. Altrettanto si può dire dei menù dei ristoranti di Bergamo dove, accanto a ricette internazionali, è ben rappresentata (e raccomandata) la tradizione locale, autentico piacere da sperimentare per approfondire la cultura bergamasca.

Bergamo’s culinary tradition has been handed down in a late nineteenth-century recipe book written by the lady of the house, who saw in good cooking a tool for bringing the family together and giving it an identity from the preparation of food to the gathering around the table - and handed it down to her daughter and then grand-daughter. Three generations identified in the food that is the mirror of local food traditions, customs and the land, because the ingredients were strictly linked to the seasons. We could say the same of Bergamo’s restaurants where, alongside international recipes, local traditions are well represented (and recommended) in the menus of local restaurants - and there is no better or more delicious way to discover more about Bergamask culture!

on il film “L’albero degli zoccoli”, vincitore della Palma d’oro al Festival di Cannes nel 1978, il regista Ermanno Olmi ha rappresentato la vita di una famiglia di poveri contadini bergamaschi sul finire dell’Ottocento.

Lo stesso ambiente e la stessa vita in cui è cresciuto, da bambino, un personaggio che ha segnato la storia della Chiesa, e non solo quella.

Si tratta di Papa Giovanni XXIII, ovvero Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, prossimo ad essere dichiarato Santo, nato nel piccolo paese di Sotto il Monte, distante da Bergamo circa 18 chilometri, che dal 1963 ha assunto la denominazione ufficiale di Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII. Oggi chi arriva a Sotto il Monte vede un paese dominato dalla torre di San Giovanni, un fortilizio di cui si ha notizia fin da prima dell’anno Mille: da lassù si scorgeva tutta l’ampia pianura tra i fiumi Adda e Brembo. Serviva sicuramente per l’avvistamento e la difesa, fin quando non fu trasformato in torre campanaria mentre accanto veniva costruita la chiesa dedicata a San Giovanni Battista. n his film “L’albero degli zoccoli” (The Tree of Wooden Clogs), Palme d’Or winner of the Cannes Film Festival in 1978, the director Ermanno Olmi described the life of a family of poor peasant people from Bergamo in the nineteenth century. This is the same area and the same situation experienced by a person who marked the history of the Church: Pope John XXIII, or Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, soon to be proclaimed a saint, who was born only 18 kilometres from Bergamo in the small town of Sotto il Monte, which was officially named Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII in 1963.

Today visitors to Sotto il Monte see a town dominated by the Tower of San Giovanni, a fortification whose origins date back to the year 1000. The top of the tower affords a view over the entire plain between the rivers Adda and Brembo. It was most certainly used as a watch tower and for defence until it was transformed into a bell tower and the Church of San Giovanni was built alongside. The building, which was built in the Romanesque style, like the tower, was demolished in 1904 and the building materials were used to construct - in a more accessible place for worshippers - the current parish church, also dedicated to San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist). This church was consecrated by the then Bishop Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in 1929, Apostolic Visitor in Bulgaria, and is the first point of reference for pilgrims visiting the town. Nella cripta della parrocchiale si trovano le suggestive testimonianze del defunto Pontefice: il calco del suo volto e della sua mano eseguiti subito dopo la morte da Giacomo Manzù, il grande artista. Spicca il crocifisso che lo stesso Papa aveva voluto nella sua stanza da letto. Altra tappa dei fedeli è l’attigua Cappella di Maria Regina della Pace, il cui altare è ricavato da un sarcofago Paleocristiano che si trovava nella basilica che l’imperatore Costantino fece innalzare a Roma in onore di San Pietro.

Un ideale percorso sulle tracce di Papa Giovanni attraverso il suo paese natale punta proprio verso la cascina dove, il 25 novembre del 1881, nacque Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. La sua era una modesta famiglia di contadini: Angelo, il quarto di ben dodici figli, visse nella cascina fino all’età di 10 anni. L’edificio ha mantenuto le caratteristiche originali: un ampio porticato ad arcate che si affacciava sull’aia, dal quale una rustica scala in legno porta al piano superiore. Qui è possibile visitare la stanza dove nacque il futuro Pontefice.

The flow of pilgrims, which was always intense, has been continuously increasing in light of the eagerly awaited moment when the “Good Pope” is proclaimed a saint.

The parish crypt houses interesting records of the late Pope: a cast of his face and hand carried out immediately after his death by Giacomo Manzù, the great artist, and the crucifix that the Pope kept in his bedroom. Another site to visit for worshippers is the Chapel of Maria Regina della Pace, the altar of which is made from a Paleo-Christian sarcophagus found in the basilica erected in Rome by the Emperor Constantine in honour of St. Peter.

An ideal tour on the trail of Pope John in his hometown focusses on the farmstead where, on 25 November 1881, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born. His family were modest farmers: Angelo, the fourth of twelve children, lived there until he was 10 years of age. The building has retained its original features: a wide arched entrance gate opens onto a farmyard from where a rustic wooden staircase leads to the upper floor. Here you can visit the room where the future Pope was born. A short distance away is the beautiful Church of Santa Maria in Brusicco, where the small Angelo was baptised on the evening of his birth.

Poco distante la bella Chiesa di Santa Maria in Brusicco, dove il piccolo Angelo fu battezzato la sera stessa del giorno della nascita. La chiesa è in stile Romanico con alcuni elementi gotici: risale al XV secolo e sulle sue pareti sopravvivono i resti di pregevoli affreschi cinquecenteschi. È cara alla memoria di Papa Giovanni perché qui il futuro Pontefice nel 1904 celebrò la sua prima Messa. In compagnia della mamma il piccolo Angelo da qui spesso si recava al Santuario della Madonna delle Caneve, ossia delle “cantine”, situato sui pendii del Monte Canto. La conclusione ideale di questo viaggio tra storia e spiritualità è la bella dimora di Ca’ Maitino, dove Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, tra il 1925 e il 1958 era solito soffermarsi d’estate. It dates back to the fifteenth century and the remains of exquisite sixteenthcentury frescoes survive on its walls. It is dear to the memory of Pope John because the future Pope celebrated his first Mass here in 1904. As a child, Angelo and his mother would often visit the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Caneve, known also as the “cantine” (cellars), situated on the slopes of Mount Canto. The perfect conclusion to this tour among history and spirituality is the beautiful residence of Ca’ Maitino, where Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, between 1925 and 1958 would stay in the summer. When he was elected Pope, the family of the Scotti barons, who were the owners, decided to donate the old fifteenth-century building to him. Here his secretary Mons. Loris Capovilla began gathering records and souvenirs and transforming Ca’ Maitino into a unique museum.

This religious man performed his extraordinary charitable work in the Veneto area and the valleys of the Tyrol. Held in high regard, he was the spiritual guide of the Archduke Leopold V of Austria and his wife Claudia de’ Medici. He rose to great fame for his work and intense spirituality and was beatified on 21 September last.

UN BORGO FUORI DAL TEMPO/A VILLAGE LOST IN TIME Una passeggiata tra i vicoli del borgo di Olera offre scorci molto caratteristici. D’obbligo raggiungere la chiesa parrocchiale, costruita nel corso del XV secolo e ristrutturata in stile Neogotico nel 1873, dove è conservato un bellissimo polittico di Cima da Conegliano, uno dei maggiori esponenti della pittura Veneta nel ‘400.

Il polittico, che domina l’interno della chiesa, è formato da nove pannelli dentro una cornice intagliata e dorata e presenta al centro la scultura originale di San Bartolomeo, patrono del paese. L’attenzione dei critici e degli storici d’arte è dovuta al fatto che l’opera può essere considerata il primo lavoro del Cima conosciuto con sicurezza ed è uno dei tre polittici rimasti intatti del grande pittore veneto. Resta un mistero come l’artista sia potuto approdare a questo piccolo paese che fino a qualche decennio fa era quasi irraggiungibile.

A stroll among the alleyways of the village of Olera offers some very interesting sights. The parish church is a mustsee destination. Built in the fifteenth century and restored in neo-Gothic style in 1873, it preserves a very beautiful polyptych by Cima da Conegliano, one of the major exponents of Venetian painting in the fifteenth century.

The polyptych, which dominates the interior of the church, is made up of nine panels in a carved gilt frame and features, in the centre, an original sculpture of St. Bartholomew, patron saint of the village. This work has received much attention from critics and art historians because it is considered his first work and is one of only three polyptychs by the great Venetian painter to have survived. It remains a mystery as to how it came to this small village, which, up until only a few decades ago, was almost unreachable.

ome per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, Porta Nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, affiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la Via Tasso e, a ovest, la Via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.

In Via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il Palazzo della Provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il Teatro Donizetti affiancato dal monumento al grande musicista.

Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta.

I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni genere, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie.

Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, Via San Tomaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’Accademia Carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittoriche italiane ed europee. Di fronte la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è utilizzata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposizioni permanenti. Non molto lontano, nel borgo di Pignolo, il Museo Bernareggi d’Arte Sacra.

orta Nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lower Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demolished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Bergamo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.

Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the Provincial Authority Building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone.

The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of San Bartolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the Donizetti Theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were established along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias.

Along Via San Tomaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century building housing the Accademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The Bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

iazza Vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Bergamo, è il naturale punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazione di arrivo si esce subito sulla Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di Via GombitoVia Colleoni, la strada principale che attraversava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la Via Gombito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.

Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla Torre Civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del Palazzo della Ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo.

Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il Battistero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la Basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi trecenteschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di Gaetano Donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla Rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monastero di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

iazza Vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the funicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town.

Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval.

Via Gombito leads to Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful square built in the fifteenth century along the line of this road axis. There are many elements of great interest in this wonderful square including the fountain donated by the Venetian podestà Alvise Contarini; the civic tower built in the XII century; the municipal library building with its white marble façade (built in the seventeenth century as a new town hall), and the Palazzo della Ragione, dating back to the second half of the XII century.

Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni is entombed, and the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century frescoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizetti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter.

Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s history unites the various museums: the Rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti Cittadella.
