NOMADS HUNTING FOR TOP TWO PLACE WITH ABER AT DEESIDE Connah’s Quay Nomads will tonight be looking to pick up another three points and head towards to the top of the JD Cymru Premier as Aberystwyth Town visit Deeside Stadium. The game marks the third game in just six days for The Nomads, while Aber haven’t been in action since last Saturday, however The Nomads have found ways to win our past three games 1-0, securing a vital six points in the league as well as progression in the Scottish Challenge Cup. Aber’s game last Saturday saw them lose out 2-1 at home to Airbus with ex-Nomad Andy Owens getting the winning goal for The Wingmakers. Prior to that, Aber had beaten Cefn Druids 2-1, bouncing back from their 10-1 drubbing at the hands of TNS. The last time Aber came to Deeside saw a tight affair end 2-1 in The Nomads favour with Michael Wilde and Michael Bakare getting the all-important goals to secure the three points on that occassion. Andy Morrison knows that Aber will prove a tough test tonight, and is looking for an improvement from his players saying; “We’ve got a damaged animal - they were beaten by Airbus who got their first points onSaturday, so they’re going to come all fired up - it’s our third game in six days and it’s going to be a big ask but looking at the boys in the dressing room, the intensity’s in their eyes, the desire is definitely there - they’re aggressive and I can see the fire in them, but you’ve got to have fire and ice - it’s got to be fire to win the game and show that desire and then there’s got to be ice - there’s got the be the flip side of it when you’re in possession of the ball and at the minute we’re coming up a bit short in that department, but we’ll keep working at it and the boys are honest and they will find a solution.”

CEFN DRUIDS
FARQUHARSON’S STRIKE SEES NOMADS DEFEAT DRUIDS Connah’s Quay Nomads defeated Cefn Druids by one goal to nil in the JD Cymru Premier on Tuesday evening, with Priestley Farquharson scoring the solitary goal in the 33rd minute. - Nomads start well and dominate possession - Pressure pays off as Priestley Farquharson opens club account - Lewis Brass makes good saves to deny Druids - Nomads see out final stages to stay undefeated Andy Morrison made three changes from the cup competition’s starting eleven, with Ryan Wignall, Jamie Insall, and Danny Harrison introduced in place of Michael Bakare, John Disney and Nathan Woolfe. His counterpart Huw Griffiths meanwhile started the likes of Naim Arsan, James Davies, and ex-Nomad Matty Owen. The match started with Nomads on the front foot, as Priestley Farquharson blasted a half volley across the face of goal from just six yards out with 30 seconds played. After a 2nd minute Danny Holmes cross saw George Horan shoot at close range but be blocked, he returned in the eighth to head a Callum Morris cross just over keeper Michael Jones’ goal. Although Cefn Druids had got into the Nomads’ half, Andy Morrison’s rigid defensive organisation had prevented them from causing problems as Nomads continued to look for an early opener. Jamie Insall went close to this when he broke free on goal in the 12th, but was tackled whilst the ball went away from him as he entered the Druids area. Druids’ first chance of the game came in the 20th minute, when James Davies got sight of goal from around 20 yards out, sending a shot goalwards

which was comfortably held by Nomads’ number one Lewis Brass. In the 25th, Priestley Farquharson showed his skill and strength, turning on the ball to lose his man and go on a surging run to the byline, winning a Nomads throw in which he took and sent long into the area. The throw was met with a bicycle kick by Michael Wilde, but the acrobatic effort was blocked amid a packed Druids area as Nomads carried on with their search for the opener. But in the 29th, Druids nearly broke the deadlock against the run of play when Ramirez Howarth fired a shot towards the roof of the Nomads’ net from 12 yards out only to be denied by the hand of Brass. Nomads came back from that warning from the visitors in the best way possible, with Priestley Farquharson sending them ahead in the 33rd minute. After good build up play from Holmes and Wignall, Wignall’s cross caused confusion in the Druids area, allowing Farquharson to open his Nomads account by smashing home a half volley at close range. Buoyed by their deserved opener, the Nomads were playing some impressive flowing football in the Druids half as they looked to extend their lead before the break. The Ancients looked to get level with a free kick in the 38th taken by Matty Owen, but it was hit against the wall as Nomads showed their composure at the back. When half time came, Nomads’ attacking display had given them a deserved 1-0 lead at the break, with Andy Morrison’s side coming out eager to take control of the proceedings once again in the second half. And they did just that, rushing into the Druids’ half to create chances early on with Wignall and Morris passing well on the edge of the area. But in the 49th, Lewis Brass again made a great stop to deny a deflected Druids shot from 25 yards out which was heading goalwards. A mere minute later, Ryan Wignall and Jamie Insall both had shots in the Druids area from around eight yards out, but both were blocked as Nomads’ campaign for a second went on. Druids remained in the game, but were coming up against a solid Nomads’ defence, seen in the 57th when the pacy Howarth ran close to the Connah’s Quay area but was calmly dispossessed by captain George Horan. On 59 minutes, Priestley Farquharson went agonisingly close to a brace, just missing out on a low cross across the face of goal from Callum Roberts after great work from the left back to reach the Druids byline. With the hour mark surpassed, Nomads’ again went close to a second, with a Wilde header from a great Wignall cross ruled out for offside, and Wignall then having a half volley cleared off the goal line during a bombardment of the Druids area. After Nomads substituted Declan Poole in place of Jay Owen, Druids showed they were still in the game when Ruberto ran down the right wing and crossed into the area, where a melee of bodies saw the ball blocked from going in on 74 minutes in a close chance for Huw Griffith’s men. As the game approached the final 10 minutes, Michael Bakare came on in place of Jamie Insall, and got immediately involved, sending a header wide from a Wignall cross in the 79th minute. In the 85th, Farquharson again went close to a brace, getting the ball off his laces to shoot from 10 yards out, but the effort was dealt with by keeper Jones. As the 90th minute arrived, three additional minutes of injury time were indicated by the fourth official, but just as the victory looked to be wrapped up, Druids hit Nomads with a late scare when they attacked the Nomads’ end and fired just wide in the 91st. Full time confirmed Connah’s Quay’s win, which maintains their unbeaten record in the JD Cymru Premier with their third consecutive 1-0 win in all competitions.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND BY WILL CATTERALL
Hello and welcome to a view from the stand, where we’re back for our third game in just six days. As we noted on Tuesday, this type of the demand is a big challenge for any team, but frequent games in multiple competitions is a key marker of playing at a top level, and that’s exactly where we want to be. What a week it’s been so far, with two 1-0 wins against tough opponents. On Saturday, we were arguably the underdogs despite playing at Deeside, going up against an unbeaten Cove Rangers sitting at the top of Scottish League Two in the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup. But once again, we claimed another Scottish scalp thanks a wily Michael Bakare free kick. Our reward is a trip to face the Scottish Championship’s Partick Thistle. The trip to Glasgow will bring back good memories for Nomads fans who travelled up last November for our now famous (or infamous to some Scottish!) clash with Queens Park where we won 2-1 against the odds. The date is now confirmed as Saturday 12th October and it would be great to see as many as possible travelling up for the fast becoming regular Nomads’ away day in Scotland. For any queries on that matter, give me an email at will.catterall@the-nomads.co.uk. On Tuesday it was a 1-0 win for us against Druids, in which we played some really exciting football going forward which may well be on show again this evening. It will of course be a different test against an Aberystwyth side looking to break into the top six, but as ever, we’ll be ready for it. It’s easy to forget that as a club, we’re much more than a men’s team – our top youth academy contains excellent U18s and U19s, with the latter pulling off an 89th minute winner to claim a 3-2 win over local rivals Airbus last Sunday. Meanwhile, our Ladies side are up and running, having won their first ever league match 12-0 against Holywell. What a start to the season for both sides – it’s well worth seeing them in action this season for a Sunday football fix. Both sides often play at the 3G, and I’ll be happy to personally email over the fixtures lists if you’d like them. Nomads Player of the Week: Priestley Farquharson A towering and powerful defender signed last season, Priestley has quickly become a regular in our line up thanks to his intelligence and ability to quickly shut strikers down. But he’s not just effective at the back, as he took on a more attacking role on Tuesday which paid dividends with the solitary winning goal, and on another night he may have got even more goals. Keep an eye on the number four tonight as he’s always an impressive watch.

GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN Good Evening Welcome to a third helping of football at the Deeside Stadium within six days. Its a personal opinion; but sometimes it seems to me that those in charge of the domestic game don’t seem to want to help their own clubs. We are doing our best to promote welsh football in the greater world, but instead of bending over backwards to help us we are punished instead. We played on Saturday and Tuesday yet here we are being made to play on Friday. The rest of the League play tomorrow. Its a long season and there is ample time to catch up on fixtures between now and the end of January. There really is no need to be forced to play catch up two days after an International club fixture. Aberystwyth are welcome visitors and we don’t blame them for sticking to their rights to refuse to move the match to tomorrow afternoon, it was their right to do so under the ruling from the FAW. However, they were fully informed that due to the College gala being held tonight that their would be no hospitality available and that car parking would be difficult. We apologise if you have had difficulties tonight. These factors are beyond our control. Aber have had an interesting start to the campaign . Beating Carmarthen 3-2 on opening day then losing 3-1 away at Barry before bravely deciding to open out against TNS and take them on. The outcome was harsh , a 10-1 defeat could have blighted many a season, however ,they responded positively with a good 2-1 win against Druids. Last week they lost at home to Airbus by the same scoreline. So a mixture and they come here tonight with a season in front that could go either way. One bright spot for them is that close season capture from Llandudno, Marc Williams, has already netted four goals. So we eventually discovered our Scottish Challenge cup opposition after the farce that saw the coverage of the live draw fail to go out. We wanted a home tie, but we got a really great away one instead. Partick Thistle are Scottish legends with supporters spread worldwide. The closest club to Glasgow City Centre and distinctive in their red and yellow hoops. They won 2-0 away at Montrose to get through to meet us and they will have the legendary Kenny Miller leading their line in our encounter at Firhill. Quite a tie to look forward to. At present, and with the train being economical and easy, I expect no organised coach travel to be provided. I look forward to the spirit of Inverness being re-created and a another truly memorable day to occur. Lets just hope for a Saturday afternoon match.
12 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Aberystwyth Town
So we are having difficulty hitting the net at one end but less difficulty protecting the net at the other one. No doubt its a problem, but if we win every game 1-0 we will be champions and treble cup winners. Part of the problem has been not of our making. We have seen what we thought to be good goals chalked off, penalties we thought blatant not awarded and many a good chance created and then missed. So its not been that we don’t set up scoring chances , more that we are not taking them. That will change and in my opinion we look very good, we are younger and fitter than previously, Callum Roberts and Priestley are bringing the average age of the side down and in Danny Holmes and Ryan Wignall we have the best two individuals I have seen this season so far in the Cymru Premier. Don’t panic, all is well. Life in the higher level, Welsh National Reserve and Colts League, continues to suit our Under 18’s. They have now played four and won four, scoring 22 goals and conceding only three. We have a good young side well worth watching and next up for them is a home game against Rhydymwyn on Saturday21st up at the 3G. With no first team game to clash with why not go along the opportunity occurs. The commencement of the Under 19’s season in the Cymru Development League saw a good battle with neighbours Airbus which was won by 3-2 with Jacob Barratt netting a last minuet winner. They play Bala at Maes Tegid on Sunday with a 2pm kick off. They return home to play Rhyl on Sunday 22nd. The Academy Cup sides at Under 12,14 and 16 commence their campaigns away at Colwyn Bay this Sunday. They meet Llandudno up at the 3G on the 22nd. Sara Hilton’s newly formed Connah’s Quay Ladies have started with a big win away at Holywell, following on from their victory over higher League Wrexham in a first friendly. Another Nomads side worth watching. As a club we are doing very well. It makes us proud. The first team go to Newtown next Friday evening before returning here to play Penybont on Sunday 29th September with a 2-30 kick off. Mark Petch is refereeing tonight. He is assisted by Gareth Roberts and Andy Harms with Alex Livesey as 4th official. Without them we would not have a game and we thank them. Enjoy the Game . Trevor

PARTICK THISTLE CLASH CONFIRMED FOR TV The SPFL have today confirmed that our visit to Partick Thistle in the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup will take place on Saturday 12th October with a 5:15pm kick off, live on S4C. The game will mark The Nomads’ fourth tie against Scottish opposition this season, having already faced Aberdeen in pre-season, Cove Rangers in the previous round and most memorably, the double header against Kilmarnock in the UEFA Europa League. The game will be broadcast live on S4C and kicks off at 5:15pm at The Energy Check Stadium at Firhill in Glasgow. On the tie, Andy Morrison said “We head to Glasgow for another challenge against a Scottish Championship team ideally you want to get a home tie against a lower ranked team, but the opportunity to make the quarter finals is one we will relish.” Partick Thistle currently sit bottom of the Scottish Championship having lost three and drawn one of their opening four games in the league campaign. They are managed by ex-Scotland international Gary Caldwell and their squad includes ex TNS defender, Steven Saunders as well as veteran striker Kenny Miller.
