A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR Welcome back to Deeside as we prepare for a massive week at Connah’s Quay Nomads. It starts tonight as we welcome Bala Town, one our closest rivals in the past few JD Cymru Premier seasons. We come into tonight’s game after our 1-0 win over Barry, which ended up a close fought game with the visitors really pushing for an equaliser late on. It’s at those moments when you have to keep your cool and show quality, and thankfully we had it abundance with Wilde getting his 50th league goal for Nomads, and Ollie Byrne pulling off a great save late on. It feels strange that in a season that has taken so long, we’re fast running out of games with seven to go before kick-off this evening. Now, the business end of the campaign is well and truly here and getting a result against the likes of Bala will define our Championship Conference campaign this year. At least for the next two games, we will have our fans able to watch along live with Sgorio live streaming this evening and broadcasting on S4C on Saturday at Park Hall. We’ve had a fantastic season, but the missing piece has been our brilliant fanbase, fingers crossed you can back as soon as possible. Also a big thanks to Sgorio for their excellent coverage of the league as always. Welcome to Colin Caton, Ruth Crump and all from Bala tonight, come on you Nomads!

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town

Lakesiders come to town as first of four big fixtures Tuesday night sees Bala Town head to Deeside Stadium in the first of four huge fixtures for The Nomads in the JD Cymru Premier. The visit of Bala marks 12 days of huge matches which could go a long way in deciding the fate of the JD Cymru Premier title as following Tuesday night’s game, The Nomads face TNS on Saturday evening, before a return trip to Bala the following Wednesday, culminating with a showdown with TNS at Deeside Stadium on May 1st. Previous Encounters The Nomads record at home against Bala has been a good one in recent years with six wins and three draw stretching back to our last home defeat to the Lakesiders back in April 2016. The most recent visit came in the opening game of this season’s campaign in which Sam Dool scored his Goal of the Month winning strike in the 95th minute of a very tight affair.

NOMADS DRAW WITH LAKESIDERS IN CLASH AT BALA

1-0

Wilde (22’)

JD Cymru Premier Saturday 17th April 2021 Deeside Stadium, Connah’s Quay, Wales

NOMADS SECURE EUROPE AS WILDE HITS 50TH GOAL Connah’s Quay Nomads defeated Barry Town United by one goal to nil in the JD Cymru Premier on Saturday evening at Deeside. A 22nd minute Michael Wilde header, his 50th league goal for the club, coupled with a late save from Ollie Byrne were enough to see Nomads gain an important three points in the JD Cymru Premier title race, whilst securing European football for the sixth successive season. The game started with Nomads on the front foot, as Danny Holmes quickly targeted the Barry area with long throw ins, and Michael Wilde caused issues for the defence as he hunted down chances. Their first major chance came in the 10th minute, when after some good play from Wilde and Neil Danns, Declan Poole had a low shot from seven yards out cleared from the goalmouth by a Barry defender. In the 13th, they were dealt a blow when Danny Holmes pulled up and was unable to continue, seeing Aron Williams replace him in a forced change for Andy Morrison. However, this did little to impact the Nomads’ hold on the proceedings, as they were dominating the possession after 20 minutes. Connah’s Quay again went close to a goal in the 21st, when a great run down the byline from Aron Williams set up Michael Wilde who sent a half volley wide. 6

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town

But just a minute later, he made no mistake in sending a sublime header past Barry keeper Mike Lewis, assisted through a perfectly weighted Declan Poole cross for the second time in as many games. With Wilde having scored his 50th JD Cymru Premier goal for Nomads, they were given a chance to double their lead in the 30th when Danny Davies was caught in the Barry area and referee David Morgan pointed to the spot. Callum Morris stepped up, but was denied by keeper Mike Lewis who pushed the ball outside of the left post. Boosted by their keeper’s save, Barry went onto see more of the possession as they pushed for an equaliser, but failed to test Nomads stopper Ollie Byrne in the first half. Nomads started the second half strong, pushing into the final third quickly with Aron Williams and Danny Davies exerting pressure on Barry to win a series of set pieces as the 50th minute passed. With an hour played, Nomads were seeing the majority of the possession, but Barry continued to grow into the game, making for a tight and sometimes fractious final 30. This was seen when both Michael Wilde and Neil Danns were shown yellow cards for a challenge in the Nomads’ area, with Barry Town also picking up three bookings in quick succession. In the 63rd, Nomads made their first change, replacing Danns with Aeron Edwards who added to the midfield as the intensity increased at Deeside. With 20 minutes to go, their second substitution Kris Owens was introduced in place of Danny Davies. In the 72nd, Barry had one of their biggest chances to equalise when a Luke Cummings throw in bounced close to the goal, but went wide. On 75 minutes, Aron Williams made a good run into the Barry end and crossed looking for Wilde, but the delivery went astray to keep the proceedings tight as the latter stages approached. Barry were now attacking the Nomads’ area at every opportunity, and threatened with an 85th minute shot from Jamie Bird whose long range effort floated just over the Nomads’ crossbar. Two minutes later, Barry’s biggest and best chance arrived when Nat Jarvis sent a diving header towards goal at close range, but a heroic stop from Ollie Byrne denied him to keep Nomads’ lead intact as injury time arrived. During three additional minutes of play, Nomads looked to keep the ball in the Barry area, but the visitors forced two last minute free kicks as they looked for a last gasp result. Nomads nearly found a second goal right at the death, with Williams’ cross-cum-shot seeing Callum Morris send his sliding effort against the post just before the full-time whistle went. A VIEW FROM THE STAND By Will Catterall

If you’re reading tonight’s programme, you’re probably already ahead of the curve when it comes to finding proper games of football. Far flung from the drama of the potential Super League, we’re getting ready for a massive JD Cymru Premier clash tonight. We’ve met Bala twice already this season, and both games brought drama. In our first game of the season, we were trailing until the 94th minute, but incredibly, Sameron Dool brought us level with a wonderstrike from 25 yards. In the return game last month, we again came back from 0-1 down, but this time Bala struck in the very first minute. Coming back from a losing position at Maes Tegid is extremely difficult, but Nomads went onto produce a dominant performance to win 3-1. So today we look for more points off the Lakesiders, but as ever we’ll have to be at the very top of our game – last week against Barry was very close at times, and I expect this will be the norm for the remainder of phase two, particularly over these next two weeks when we face TNS and Bala twice. The win over Barry also brought us a sixth-European qualification, as we can now only finish a minimum of third, the automatic qualifying spot for the Europa Conference League next season. Looking back, it’s incredible to think that qualifying for Europe – once just a lofty ambition at Nomads, is now met with standard expectation, and it’s all down to the professionalism of Andy Morrison and all the coaching staff for instilling this culture within the club. It’s gutting that in this incredibly successful season, we haven’t been able to have fans with us, but Sgorio have covered a number of our games to help keep you in with the action. As a reminder, we will be live: • Tonight – on Sgorio’s Facebook and YouTube channels • Saturday – against TNS on S4C at Park Hall • Wednesday 28th April – against Bala at Maes Tegid on Facebook and YouTube channels These three games could well decide the course of our campaign, and although fans can’t be with us for it rest assured we’ll be keeping you updated every step along the way. Score Prediction: Nomads 2-0 Bala Town Nomads Player of the Week: Ollie Byrne Ollie became our first choice keeper midway through the season, and has certainly proved his place since. A solid presence at the back, our defensive record means he is statistically rarely tested, but when he is, he produces. As Barry pushed on Saturday, they finally found ‘the chance’ in the 87th, but Ollie was there to deny him and will no doubt be important for us tonight again. 8
