A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR Hello and welcome to our first fixture of phase two, aka the business end of the JD Cymru Premier. This has already been a season like no other, as in normal times we would only have maybe three or four games still to play by now. Thanks to Covid, we still have 10 huge games ahead to decide this year’s JD Cymru Premier title. What a phase one it’s been for us, taking 57 points from 22 games with 18 wins and three draws, losing only once – and we even played extremely well during that game! Our run has rightly seen us go top of the league, but it remains all to play for over the next few weeks. As you’ll know, the format sees us play our fellow top six sides once at home, and once away. We both start and end phase two against today’s opponents, Penybont, travelling down to face them on the final game of the season on May 15th. Between those two games, fixtures include away trips to Caernarfon, Bala and Barry in the midweek, but we do have live Sgorio coverage confirmed for the Caernarfon clash at The Oval this coming Tuesday and will keep you updated on further live games as we get them. For us, the focus can only be one game at a time, and a huge effort will be needed to continue our winning ways today. Penybont showed a lot of promise last season and it’s come good with an excellent phase one seeing them secure a top six place, and potentially a spot in Europe which they’ll be fighting for this afternoon. Welcome to Rhys Griffiths and all of his players and staff as we get ready for another big afternoon at Deeside, and thanks once again to our fans for your support from afar.

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Penybont
Phase Two gets underway with visit of Penybont Saturday afternoon will see The Nomads start Phase Two of the JD Cymru Premier as Penybont come to Deeside Stadium. Form Guide The Nomads come into the game in formidable form, having won 12 of our last 13 games, with the only points dropped coming in a 0-0 draw away at Penybont in early March. Rhys Griffiths’ team head north on the back of a 2-0 victory over Haverfordwest to cememt their top six place and prior to that had picked up three wins, two draws and a defeat in their previous six games. Previos encounters As mentioned earlier the sides last met in early March in a game largely dominated by the visiting Nomads, however Penybont were able to find a way to keep The Nomads out earning a 0-0 draw. Prior to that, the sides have only met on three other occassions another 0-0 draw in south Wales as well as a 3-1 and 1-0 win at Deeside Stadium. From the gaffer Ahead of The Nomads’ fifth game in two weeks, Manager Andy Morrison commented; “They’ve been really close games and they’ve probably been the most improved team over the last couple of seasons since they came in and it was a close game, it was 1-0 we had one substitute on the day - we were backs against the wall after the Covid issue with Europe and we found a way to win. We went down there and drew 0-0 - it was a fair game, could have gone either way so we know what a good outfit they areand we know what qualities they’re going to bring.”

FIVE STAR NOMADS FINISH PHASE ONE ON TOP Connah’s Quay Nomads finished phase one of the JD Cymru Premier with a 5-1 victory over Newtown AFC at Latham Park on Good Friday. A Jamie Breese goal gave the hosts an early lead, but a formidable performance from Connah’s Quay saw them take the victory with five different goalscorers. After kick off it was Nomads who pressed forward first, but Newtown hit back to score with their very first chance on goal in the third minute. Jamie Breese received a through ball after Newtown countered a Nomads press, and ran clear on goal to score from around eight yards. After going behind early on, Nomads pressed for an equaliser with urgency, pinning the hosts in their own half. In the 10th, it nearly paid off when Neil Danns sent an effort off the right post from the edge of the penalty area. After 15 minutes, the likes of Aron Williams and Danny Davies were causing problems for the Newtown defence with their cutting runs and deliveries into the area. In the 20th, Nomads finally found the breakthrough when Aron Williams targeted the goalmouth with a long throw in, where Craig Curran received the ball, turned and slotted in at close range. With play level once again, both sides were pushing to retake the lead at half time, with Breese going on another dangerous run in the 22nd only to be stopped by Nomads captain George Horan. On 24 minutes, Breese was again in the mix as he looked to convert a cross from Rushton, however Danny Harrison was there to stop him, clattering into the goal post in doing so, but 6

remaining on the field after treatment. After half an hour, Nomads were enjoying the majority of the possession as they plotted their way into the Newtown area. In the 34th, they had a free kick attempt from 20 yards out taken by Kris Owens, but keeper Dave Jones came off his line to collect it. In the 39th, Connah’s Quay looked to counter a Newtown movement with a thundering run down the left wing from Curran, crossing to Davies whose firsttime effort went wide of the goal. The interval arrived and with the scores level, Nomads came out in the second half and went on to dominate the proceedings. They quickly got into the Robins’ final third, and won a free kick and corner kick, the latter of which was cancelled out with the referee awarding a Newtown free kick in their own area. After 50 minutes, Nomads were piling the pressure on with aerial balls into the Newtown area, with Wilde picking up a yellow card for a foul against the keeper in the 54th. Newtown had a rare chance in the 56th, but Horan and Harrison connected to stop Tyrone Ofori running clear just on the edge of the Nomads’ area. With 60 minutes played, Connah’s Quay were on top but still looking for a second goal to take the lead. Andy Morrison then made his first changes in a double substitution, introducing Jamie Insall and Aeron Edwards for Danny Harrison and first half goalscorer Curran. In the 63rd, Nomads’ much sought-after goal arrived thanks to the quick wits of Neil Danns, who opened his club account along the way. After a series of aerial challenges in and around the Newtown area, the ball bounced towards the goalkeeper, but Danns got a touch to snatch the ball out of his reach, and headed in off the underside of the crossbar. Having come back from 0-1 down to lead, Nomads didn’t let up and were soon searching for a third. In the 72nd, Davies sent an excellent cross towards the top left corner of the goal where Wilde headed just wide. But just two minutes later they sealed an opportunity to get a third, when referee Alex McInch pointed to the spot in a crowded Newtown area. Nomads’ serial spot taker Callum Morris stepped up and made no mistake, slotting in to give his side a commanding 3-1 lead as the game entered its final 15 minutes. As the final 10 minutes approached, Andy Morrison made his final change of the game, bringing on Johnny Hunt in place of Danny Davies. Having battled after Newtown’s opener in the 3rd minute, Nomads spent the latter stages of the game in full control, and extended the lead to 4-1 via Wilde in the 85th who headed in an Aron Williams cross. With the likes of Danny Holmes in the Nomads defence still working hard to nullify any late Newtown attempts, the game looked all but over as injury time approached. But Jamie Insall found time to add a fifth in the 90th, getting on the end of an Edwards ball to send a deft header into the bottom left corner. After three minutes of injury time, Nomads’ victory and place at the top of the JD Cymru Premier for the end of phase one was confirmed. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Penybont

A VIEW FROM THE STAND By Will Catterall
It’s great to be back at Deeside after the club’s most successful-ever phase one campaign. Since September, and despite packed fixture lists, lockdowns and injuries, Nomads lead the pack as we head into the final 10 games of this extraordinary season so far. Last week at Newtown served as a real statement of our intent, putting five past the Robins after initially going 0-1 down early on. It was a performance that personified Nomads’ campaign so far – composed, dominant, and organised. You can’t leave anything to chance in this league, and we certainly don’t. Andy Morrison and his staff’s preparation each week is meticulous, and the effect is clear to see when you look at the league table. Now, we have 10 games to ensure we stay top, and it’s going to be a challenge like never before, playing back-to-back midweek and weekend fixtures for four weeks, before our penultimate and final games in May against Caernarfon and Penybont respectively. Unfortunately, there is no update in terms of fans returning to games yet as we continue to follow Government guidance. Rest assured as soon as there’s any update, we’ll be letting you all know, but there can be no guarantee this will happen during the remainder of the season. Hopefully, you’ve still been enjoying following our season and trust that we will definitely be getting together with our fans when we can. It’s important to remember that even only five years ago, our fan base was so much smaller than it is now, and the club is extremely grateful for the support we now get week in week out, be it at the ground or through our social channels. Penybont could be called the ‘surprise package’ of the season, but that doesn’t really do them justice. They put on a number of good performances in their first season up, and have more than earned their place in the top six. We know just how tough they can be, drawing twice with them in stalemates at the SDM Glass Stadium. Today, we’ll need to look to our relentless home form to break them down in our search for another massive three points. Score Prediction: Nomads 2-0 Penybont Player of the Week: Neil Danns A great goal from Danns saw him open his Nomads account at Newtown last week, cleverly taking the ball off the keeper to head us into the lead at a crucial stage of the game. One of our recent signings, he’s quickly gelled into the team and is showing his experience in the midfield with brilliant reading of the game as well as his strength and power on the ball. He’s going to be an important player for us in phase two, and fingers crossed for more goals to come from him too. 8
