Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town
The pandemic has been a challenging time for all clubs, but I’m really proud to see how everyone at Nomads has pulled together to continue our successes here at Deeside, in Wales, and in Europe. From training to matchdays, the new normal means a minefield of regulations and guidance to keep everyone involved in football safe. Thanks to the intensive work of our staff, we’ve been able to get back to football, starting at the FAW’s Colliers Park facility, and heading to down Cardiff City Stadium for an amazing night in the Champions League.
A big welcome to Colin Caton, Ruth Crump and all travelling to Deeside from Bala this evening. Whenever a match with Bala comes, we always know it’s going to be tough and that’s testament to the strong outfit they’ve been for a number of years now.
HONORABLE CLUB PATRONS Lord Barry Jones, Roger Speed

Good evening and welcome to our digital programme which we hope will give you a taste of the matchday you’re used to at Deeside in these strange times.
Now, we’re doing it all over again in the JD Cymru Premier and in Thursday’s clash with Dinamo Tbilsi at Wrexham’s Racecourse ground. It’s an incredibly busy time, but I know Andy, Jay and Craig will have the lads ready to perform as always.

LEAGUE CAMPAIGN RETURNS AS CHAMPIONS HOST BALA Saturday evening will see Connah’s Quay Nomads in JD Cymru Premier action for the first time as Champions as we welcome Bala Town to Deeside Stadium for a 5:45pm kick off. The match marks the first game in the 2020/21 domestic campaign for both clubs after the 2019/20 season was drawn to an abrupt end following a 2-2 draw between the two sides back in early March. Both sides have of course been in European action with The Nomads facing Sarajevo in the Champions’ League and Bala facing Valetta of Malta in the Europa League. The last time The 2-2 draw in March was the last time that the two sides met, but the previous encounter at Deeside Stadium saw a thrilling late fightback from The Nomads, who had trailed for the majority of the game to an early Jonny Spittle strike - two late goals from substitute Michael Bakare gave The Nomads victory back in December. The 300 Club Should Michael Wilde start for The Nomads on Saturday, he will make is 300th appearance in the JD Cymru Premier, having made 87 starts for The Nomads since joining from TNS in 2016, scoring on 35 occasions in the league. NOMADS DRAW WITH LAKESIDERS IN CLASH AT BALA
0-2
Pre-season Friendly Friday 4th September 2020 Latham Park, Newtown, Wales
Wilde (62’) Insall (74’)
NOMADS CONTINUE PRE-SEASON DOMINANCE Connah’s Quay Nomads continued our dominant pre-season form with a 2-0 victory at Newtown on Friday night thanks to second half goals from Michael Wilde and Jamie Insall. Frustrating First Half The Nomads wasted no time in testing Dave Jones in the Newtown goal with Sameron Dool playing in Michael Wilde in just the second minute with Jones saving Wilde’s left-footed effort to give The Nomads an early corner. Just three minutes later saw Craig Curran start a move from inside the centre circle, setting John Disney and Sameron Dool free down the right wing with the latter crossing to Curran who arrived late in the box, volleying just over Jones’ goal as The Nomads started the game strongly. A minute later came Newtown’s only real sight of goal in the first half as some neat play down the left wing saw a cross in to an unmarked Morris in the middle of the goal who headed over The Nomads’ goal. Just before the 20 minute mark, Dool broke into the Newtown box, rounding the onrushing Dave Jones, however Dool was forced wide and as he regained control of the ball a number of Newtown bodies had thrown themselves in front of the ball to prevent him from picking out Michael Wilde in the middle of the box for a simple tap-in. Just three minutes later and there were shouts for a penalty as Craig Curran was clattered into whilst challenging for a header - despite the strong physical contact, Curran was still able to nod down to Priestley Farquharson who turned to shoot just over the bar as The Nomads continued to put pressure on. In the 32nd minute, Sameron Dool played in a corner to the near post where Danny Davies headed towards goal, only to 6

see his effort cleared off the line - a goalmouth scramble followed but the ball just wouldn’t fall for The Nomads and Dave Jones eventually gathered the ball. Seven minutes later and The Nomads thought they had taken the lead when Priestley Farquharson tapped the ball in from inside the sixyard box, only for referee Iwan Griffith to rule the goal out for a foul on Dave Jones by John Disney in the build up to the goal. The Nomads’ final chance of a dominanet first half came on the stroke of half time as Craig Curran picked out Danny Davies at the back post who headed just wide of Dave Jones’ goal. Iwan Griffith blew for half time with the scores level but The Nomads knowing that they could have already scored three or four. Second half goals win the game Three changes were made at half time as Oliver Byrne, Jay Owen and Kris Owens replaced Lewis Brass, Danny Harrison and Callum Roberts for The Nomads and the pressure continued in the early stages of the second half - just six minutes in and Craig Curran picked out Michael Wilde inside the box, who saw Dave Jones tip his header just over the bar and from the resulting corner, Wilde headed just inches wide again. It was in the 62nd minute that The Nomads finally got the breakthrough that our play deserved. John Disney was fouled on the right wing and from the resulting free kick, Sameron Dool floated a delightful ball to the back post which saw Michael Wilde arrive with a bullet header high into the roof of the net to give the visiting Nomads the advantage. The 69th minute saw Oliver Byrne have his only real save of the evening as ex-Nomads Nick Rushton sent a tame effort straight at him from outside the box. Jamie Insall who had replaced Craig Curran on the hour mark was soon involved and headed an effort on to the roof of the net in the 70th minute before getting on the scoresheet himself in the 74th minute. Aron Williams produced a neat bit of play down the right wing sending a cross low into the Newtown box - after a bit of pinball inside the box, the ball fell to Insall who poked home from close range to double The Nomads’ advantage. The Nomads nearly added to their goals in the following minutes as a John Disney effort was blocked by a lunging defender and Insall was denied a second as Danny Davies broke down the left wing picking out Insall who headed for goal only for Dave Jones to tip the ball wide for a corner. Full time signaled a thoroughly dominant performance from The Nomads who produced some fine football throughout the night at Latham Park and the result could have been more emphatic had some of the chances found the target on the night.

DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR ANDY AND PRIESTLEY Connah’s Quay Nomads are delighted to announce that Andy Morrison and Priestley Farquharson have been awarded Manager of the Season and Young Player of the Season for the 2019/20 season. The presentation of both awards was made by Nicky John at training on Tuesday night with Andy and Priestley both unaware and expecting a simple pre-match interview regarding the upcoming Bala game. Andy has been shortlisted for the award for the past four seasons since joining the club and has now won it at his fifth attempt following an outstanding season which saw The Nomads pick up the JD Cymru Premier title as well as the Nathaniel MG Cup and not forgetting the historic victory over Kilmarnock in the Europa League earlier in the season. Priestley also had a standout season is his first full season at the club having joined in January 2019, picking up a number of man of the match awards along the way and even finding the net on two occassions against Cefn Druids and Airbus UK throughout the season. A huge congratulations to both from everyone at the club. 8

A VIEW FROM THE STAND By Will Catterall
Hello and I hope you’re enjoying this historic issue of our club programme in many significant ways. It is of course our first as Champions after our incredible achievement last season, our first since the COVID-19 outbreak, and a programme for a match played behind closed doors at Deeside Stadium. However, I know you’ll be reading this for the football content, not coronavirus updates, so we’ll keep to football from here. In this strange pre-season we’ve had to adapt to a smaller amount of friendlies, but the preparation has as ever been top class, and the good news is we won three and lost only one, which was to football league opposition in Crewe Alexandra. In the middle of that was our inaugural Champions League game, in the capital against Bosnian Champions, FK Sarajevo. We all knew this was going to be a huge test, so it speaks volumes that we’re disappointed at going 0-2 down on a night that saw a largely even game played out, and could’ve easily gone our way another time. Being Champions comes with its perks, and perhaps the best is the right to a second chance in Europe. That comes on Thursday, when we face Georgian Champions Dinamo Tbilisi in the Europa League at the Racecourse, which will be streamed live for fans by the club. You’d be forgiven for not recognising their name at first, but make no mistake, they’re an established club on the European stage and share a very similar coefficient ranking to that of Sarajevo and previous Europa League opponents Shakhtyor Soligorsk. We know they have quality, but we also have the ability and confidence from that Sarajevo game to cause them problems. It’s perhaps fitting that our JD Cymru Premier story picks up where it left – facing Bala Town. In our last match of the curtailed season, we drew 2-2 at Maes Tegid in a fierce night of competition, but that point proved enough in the end, as another 2-2 draw on the same evening between TNS and Barry kept us top of the league by four crucial points. Tonight Bala will be even stronger than the side we saw back in March, back fresh and rightly confident after an excellent result in Europe against Valletta of Malta. They now have a tie at Belgian giants Standard Liege to look forward to, but tonight they’ll only be focused on starting the JD Cymru Premier season in good fashion, as are we. Thankfully tonight’s game is broadcast live on Sgorio, so you’ll get to follow all the action live, or from our Twitter updates. Rest assured, the club and league are also keeping updated with all the guidance and hope fans can come back to Deeside sooner than later, but we know you’ll be supporting us from home as you have been throughout much of 2020. Score Prediction: Nomads 2-1 Bala Town Nomads Player of the Week: Priestley Farquharson Priestley earns this having picked up the JD Cymru Premier’s young player of the season award this week after he established himself as a key part of our notoriously tough to break down defence last season. At 23, he’s got plenty more to come yet and we hope to see that this evening. 10 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town
