SECOND FACE THIRD AT DEESIDE Tonight’s JD Cymru Premier fixture at Deeside Stadium will see second-placed Bala Town visit third-placed Connah’s Quay Nomads. The Nomads fell to our first defeat of the domestic campaign last Friday at Cefn Druids in a game which we dominated from start to finish but two goals against the run of play was enough to inflict our first defeat in the Welsh top flight since April. Bala took advantage of the defeat by leapfrogging us in midweek as they faced Penybont, picking up a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night to jump into second place in the league table. The Lakesiders have been on an impressive run of form of late having won all of their games since 1st November without conceding a goal. Tonight’s match marks the third time that we have face Colin Caton’s team in the 2019/20 season despite it only being December - the last time that Bala were here was little under a month ago with The Nomads coming out 2-0 victors in the Nathaniel MG Cup Semi Final, booking our place in the final for the first time since 1996. Prior to that, it was a 1-0 victory for The Nomads at Maes Tegid thanks to a 69th minute header from Michael Wilde, who was also on the scoresheet in the League Cup Semi Final.

2-0 CEFN DRUIDS

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

NOMADS TASTE FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON AT DRUIDS Connah’s Quay Nomads succumbed to their first loss of the 2019/20 season with a 2-0 defeat at Cefn Druids on Friday evening. Cody Ruberto made it 1-0 in the 44th minute, and a 90th minute strike from Josef Faux saw Nomads lose for the first time in 23 games. • First half saw Nomads dominate possession • A 44th minute strike from Ruberto gave Druids lead • Nomads battled through second half to find equaliser • Faux countered late on to confirm 2-0 loss • Nomads lose for the first time this season Nomads came into the game looking to further their impressive season so far in which they had yet to lose a game. They were returning to league action following a JD Welsh Cup third round victory over South Wales’ Abertillery Bluebirds, in which Michael Wilde and Sameron Dool got on the scoresheet. Whilst Wilde and captain George Horan were serving suspensions, Dool stayed in Andy Morrison’s team alongside Jay Owen and Callum Morris with Jamie Insall leading the line. A total of four academy scholars also earned call ups to the Nomads’ bench, as Max Moore, Connor-Astreos, Josh Allen and Sam Williams were all included in the squad. Cefn Druids were meanwhile coming off the back of a JD Welsh Cup win over Guilsfield, and started household names including Neil Ashton and Naim Arsan, with the pacy Ramirez Howarth also in the XI. After the first chance of the game on two minutes saw Druids’ Josef Faux blast a shot over from 20 yards, Nomads held a lot of the possession early on in the game.

6 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town

A good cross into their area from Dool saw Bakare slice an effort close to goal, and a corner kick, taken by Bakare, went to Danny Holmes who ran to head it at the far post unchallenged but sent it just wide in the 4th. Connah’s Quay turned their bright start into regular possession in the Druids’ half, with the likes of Jay Owen, Danny Holmes, and Priestley Farquharson, who was playing in the midfield, combining well to get upfield. On 22 minutes, they went close straight from a corner kick from Poole, whose delivery was initially dropped by keeper Michael Jones before Bakare was blocked while trying to follow up with a strike. Nomads’ domination of the possession earned them a free kick 22 yards out of the Druids’ goal on 27 minutes, with Callum Roberts sending low into the centre where Jones dealt with it. After half an hour of play, Nomads’ were looking composed across the pitch, and with Druids set up similarly well, it looked as if the wait for a goal would go on into half time. But on the cusp of the half, a long ball went to the edge of Nomads area where Lewis Brass ran out to collect it. He was intercepted by Josef Faux, who sent a cross to Cody Ruberto who headed it into the open goal to give Druids a 1-0 lead against the run of play. The second half started off with a fast pace as both sides rushed to get sight of goal. In the 47th, Callum Roberts ran close to the Druids byline before seeing his shot ricochet out, with Faux shooting over for the hosts two minutes later. With the hour mark approaching, Andy Morrison made his first change, bringing on Conor Harwood in place of Jay Owen. The game then went end to end, with Druids have a cross glance across the face of Nomads’ goal in the 58th, and Harwood heading just wide from a Declan Poole cross on 60 minutes. John Disney then replaced Jamie Insall and helped drive Nomads into the Druids final third, making good runs to win a series of set pieces on the left wing. Callum Roberts was also proving effective, sending multiple crosses into the Druids box, but they were met with a stern presence from the home defence who were piled into their area to try and block Nomads out. The 80th approached and Nomads were still looking for an equaliser, going close in the 82nd when a deft, close range Callum Roberts volley looped just over the crossbar. As they continued to run at the Druids’ end, the home side turned to counter attacks to try and secure their win, forcing an excellent sweeping save from Lewis Brass in the 86th, who stopped James Davies who broke free on the goal. Nomads continued to press for a late leveller, but their hopes of getting a result were dashed in the 90th when Josef Faux ran through on goal and slotted in from around 15 yards to inflict Connah’s Quay’s first loss since a 2-0 Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup defeat at the hands of Partick Thistle.

JD Welsh Cup Saturday, 7th December 2019 Condour 3G Stadium, Abertillery

0-3 ABERTILLERY BLUEBIRDS

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

NOMADS BEAT BLUEBIRDS TO KICK OFF WELSH CUP CAMPAIGN Connah’s Quay Nomads defeated Abertillery Bluebirds by three goals to nil on Saturday afternoon to progress to the fourth round of the JD Welsh Cup. Goals from Michael Bakare, Michael Wilde, and Sameron Dool were enough to overcome the fourth tier hosts. • Nomads faced Bluebirds for first time in history • A tight first half saw game stay goalless • Abertillery went close with bizarre ‘ghost goal’ • Nomads score three in final 30 minutes The game saw Nomads kick off their 19/20 JD Welsh Cup campaign in South Wales as they looked to continue their strong performance in the competition that had seen them lift the trophy and come runners up in 17/18 and 18/19 respectively. Standing in their way was the lowest ranked team left in the competition, Abertillery Bluebirds, following an impressive cup run that had started in the second qualifying round. Andy Morrison made three changes to his side following a previous 0-0 draw with Penybont, seeing Jay Owen, Priestley Farquharson, and Callum Roberts come into the side. Abertillery boss Lee Thomas meanwhile started top scorer Owen Goodenough, as well as stalwart defenders Daniel Paul and Charles Davies. Nomads started the game by dominating possession for the first five minutes, which saw Bakare find himself in space to the left of the Bluebirds’ area, but send his cross out for a goal kick. Abertillery did get the ball into the Nomads’ end but the work of defenders

Callum Roberts and George Horan saw Connah’s Quay quickly regain possession. The first major chance came in the 16th minute, when a 12 yard Michael Wilde effort fell to Jamie Insall, who from around eight yards hit the ball over with a half volley attempt. With 20 minutes played, the hosts were looking to get shots away in the Nomads’ area, and went close in the 23rd when Luke Lewis ran into it and looked to shoot from 10 yards but was well tackled by captain George Horan. On 28 minutes, Nomads were still pushing hard for an opener, and nearly found it in the 28th when a Wilde header was tipped over the crossbar by Bluebirds’ keeper Gareth Williams. Andy Morrison’s side ramped up the pressure in the final stage of the first half, with runs from the likes of Bakare, Roberts, and Sameron Dool getting them into the Bluebirds’ final third regularly. Michael Wilde again threatened in the 38th, shooting via a corner kick but being denied by keeper Williams. Wilde remained in the thick of action, as he accidentally blocked a Declan Poole shot from 15 yards after another corner in the 43rd. Despite Nomads strong first half showing, the cup tie was goalless and very much open at the interval. The second half saw Nomads again come out of the stocks fast, rushing into the Bluebirds’ half and aiming to stay there as they looked to break the deadlock sooner rather than later. The first major chance of the second half came in the 55th when Dool shot from just six yards, but was denied by the outstretched leg of keeper Williams who enjoyed a superb performance for his side. In the 57th, confusion reigned for a brief moment at the Candour 3G, as a looping header from the Bluebirds looped over the Nomads’ goal, but appeared to have gone into the back of the net. This triggered celebrations from the home side, leading most in the ground to believe they had taken a 1-0 lead, but the officials confirmed the ball had gone over and out for a goal kick. Nomads then finally broke the deadlock in the 60th via Michael Bakare, who played a short corner before receiving the ball on the edge of the area and shooting low into the goal, helped by a slight deflection from a defender. Although they had taken the lead, Connah’s Quay did little to rest on their laurels, making it 2-0 in the 65th thanks a Michael Wilde header from close range after a cross from Sameron Dool. With a hold on the encounter established, Nomads made a double substitution, bringing on Conor Harwood and Callum Morris in place of Michael Wilde and Jay Owen. The new additions helped Connah’s Quay stay in control, as they then limited Abertillery’s movement to hold off their comeback efforts. Into the final 10 minutes, Nomads were comfortable and looking to add more goals to the scoresheet, with Bakare going close to a brace with a good run and shot off the left post on 81 minutes. In the 82nd, Bakare was there again with a dangerous cross that was headed at close range by Insall but saved by keeper Williams. Nomads third did eventually come, in the 90th minute, when Sameron Dool got into the area and coolly slotted in from 15 yards to top off a successful JD Welsh Cup victory for his side. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town

GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN

Good Evening, Bala Town were here in the semi-final of the Nathaniel MG Cup only a few weeks back. In a very good game we came out on top, but it was clear to see that very little divides these teams. Nigel and his committee, Colin and the staff and players are welcomed warmly as are the Lakesiders supporters. I confidently expect both of these sides to finish in the top three come May and tonight’s game will have a bearing on what order they end up in. Our visitors have played eight league away games winning five (2-1 at Airbus, 6-1 at Penybont, 3-0 at Druids, 5-0 at Aberystwyth and 3-0 at Carmarthen) drawing once (2-2 at Barry) and losing twice (1-0 to Newtown and 1-0 at TNS). That record shows the challenge we face. Our past two games have shown the status of things in the JD Cymru Premier. We have totally dominated both away games and yet picked up only one point having failed to score in either. In this league the opposition are always good enough to steal a goal and if the many chances created are spurned then you are not likely to succeed. The truth is that despite half a side out suspended or injured we were a class above both opponents in general football but if you don’t score you don’t win. With George; Michael; and both Wiggy and Woolfie out, we have a very young side on the pitch, they need to be nurtured and given time to grow, but in a side that hopes to challenge for honours then we don’t have the opportunity to give that time. There is not a lot between The New Saints, Bala, Nomads and Barry; and in my opinion whoever makes the best additions in the January window will prosper. Its clear what we need is someone who can find the back of the net. As the New Year approaches, and the final run in begins, the League is very nicely poised. The New Saints have 38 points and are three clear of Bala and four clear of ourselves. Caernarfon and Barry are a further four back with the Canaries having a game in hand. Form team Druids may yet force their way into contention for the European places and sit on 27; probably too far back to challenge the perennial champions but not out of range of the rest of us. Quite a top six, and this year’s phase two should be really competitive. Points gained in the Christmas derbies may be crucial. The match here at 2:30pm in six days’ time on Boxing day may be a real battle - Airbus are going through a difficult time, but making the five mile trip here for a real derby can only inspire them. I urge all local football fans to shake off the Turkey by venturing out to the Deeside Stadium.

16 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town

We have a further couple of near neighbours in the Cymru Premier Division One North. Flint have had a great season so far which sees them tucked into second place and chasing down our ex Head Coach Neil Gibson’s Prestatyn Town. The gap is five points and new boy’s Colwyn Bay are a further five back and on a great run that saw them win at Flint last weekend. Buckley are not going quite so well and are in 12th just two points above the relegation places but they do have games in hand against the five currently below them. Our Under 19’s have completed only nine of their twenty Development League Fixtures. They sit third on 22 points from seven wins one draw and one defeat. That’s three points behind leaders The New Saints but with two games in hand. The Under 18’s are playing in a higher league this year and yet they top it. With half the fixtures played we have won 12 and lost 2. Our 36 points means that if everyone wins their games in hand we will have a five point gap in our favour. Rob Jenkins referees tonight with Gareth Jones and Connor Fowler assisting; Iwan Griffith is fourth official (and I thought he refereed very well at Druids last week). We welcome them all and wish for an incident free easy night for them. It just remains to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas from all at Nomads. See you boxing day; Trevor
