CUP FINAL AWAITS FOR DEESIDE VICTORS Saturday afternoon’s game at Deeside Stadium sees The Nomads face Bala Town in the Semi Final of the Nathaniel MG Cup with a place in the final at stake. The Nomads have reached the semi final for the past four successive season’s however have unfortunately not made the final on any of those occassions, so will be looking to get that monkey off our back and reach our first League Cup Final since 1996. Both sides come into the game in fine form with The Nomads sitting atop the JD Cymru Premier unbeaten so far in domestic competition while Bala currently sit fourth in the league just four points behind having won their past three games, having scored ten goals without reply. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison spoke to the club’s YouTube channel saying; “We’re coming up against a team, similar to ourselves who are bang in form - they’ve really hit the ground now, results are coming, clean sheets and they’re in a rich vein of form, similar to ourselves so it’s got all the makings of a great game. I think over the last couple of weeks that Bala have begun to show that the changes that came in the summer are coming to fruition, the freshness as well and I’ve got to take my hat off to Colin on that.” “It’s goingto be a tough game, it always is against Bala, but like I say, I’ve got great respect for what they’ve done this season and I think that respect comes from a period of years of playing against each other - you’re going to fall out with managers along the way, we’re all trying to win and matchdays is a battlefield and you’ve got to find a way to win and for there to be a winner there has to be a loser.”

3-1 CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

NOMADS GO FOUR POINTS CLEAR WITH VICTORY OVER NEWTOWN Connah’s Quay Nomads defeated Newtown by three goals to one on Friday evening at Deeside in the JD Cymru Premier.

NEWTOWN

Newtown took the lead with a 24th minute goal, but strikes from Michael Wilde, Jamie Insall, and Michael Bakare sealed a Nomads’ victory. Nomads came into the game in high spirits following a 4-0 win over Barry Town United at Jenner Park in a first versus second place battle that had kept them top of the JD Cymru Premier. Newtown travelled to Deeside sitting in 7th place, and were looking for three points to break into the top six after a 3-1 home win over Caernarfon Town in the previous week. Andy Morrison made only one change to the line up, as Callum Roberts returned from suspension to replace the ill Priestley Farquharson. Jamie Insall and Michael Wilde both started having netted braces against Barry. Newtown boss Chris Hughes meanwhile started ex-Nomad Nick Rushton along with the likes of Joe Kenton and Kieran Mills-Evans. The game was played in wet conditions at Deeside, with the first chance going to the hosts in the 6th minute, when Jamie Insall broke through on goal and shot from 10 yards out, but was blocked by the left foot of keeper David Jones. Nomads were looking to create chances early on, with Michael Bakare making runs down the wing and Sameron Dool taking a corner kick which was sent wide by a Callum Roberts shot in the 10th. The Robins’ similarly sought a goal, winning a corner in the 13th minute which was swung close to the goal by Jack Kelly but caught well by keeper

Lewis Brass. On 17 minutes, ex-Bala man Ian Sheridan had Newtown’s best chance of the game so far, sending a 10 yard effort just past the left post. But on 24 minutes, they did find a goal through Sean McCallister, who sent a 20 yard strike low into the goal despite Nomads having the ball in the Newtown end moments earlier. Andy Morrison’s side found themselves 0-1 down, but reacted perfectly by equalising just five minutes later through Michael Wilde. A good move down the left wing saw Callum Roberts send a cross in which went towards goal, where Wilde was laying in wait to head home. Connah’s Quay continued to attack the Newtown end, with the skilful Sameron Dool firing a powerful shot towards goal in the 31st, only for Jones to save it from 18 yards out. Dool was again an important man for the Nomads in the final third, as his corner kick helped produce their second goal in the 35th. His delivery was headed in the six yard box by Wilde, with Insall then rising up to make sure it went high into the top right corner. Having come back from 0-1 down to lead 2-1 in the space of just over 10 minutes, the Nomads had taken a hold of the game and maintained their control of it until the interval. The second half saw Nomads’ work well to frustrate a Newtown side determined to find a way back into the game, with the likes of Bakare and Poole proving dangerous on their respective wings. Just before the hour mark, there was drama as Nomads nearly scored via a Callum Roberts lob. He found the keeper off his line and went for goal from 25 yards out, but it hit the post before Wilde followed up with a close range effort saved by Jones, who recovered to deny Nomads a third. Andy Morrison then made his first change of the evening, introducing Jay Owen in place of Declan Poole to consolidate Nomads’ strength in the midfield. With 20 minutes to play, the hosts’ much sought-after third goal was still evading them despite their disciplined play regularly sending them into Newtown’s final third. In the 75th, Jay Owen found Insall clear in goal upfront with a ball to beat the offside trap, but he was beaten to it by Jones who rushed off his line to clear it. With 10 minutes to play Nomads showed no sign of settling with the 2-1 scoreline, as Insall went close to a brace in the 82nd. From the edge of the area he tried to chip the keeper, but the effort went just wide. But in the 85th, the third goal finally came courtesy of Michael Bakare, who found himself alone on the left wing and surged into the area before sending the ball around Jones from around 15 yards out. Nomads moved to make two more substitutions, replacing Wilde and Dool with John Disney and Conor Harwood, who won Nomads a free kick in the 89th near Newtown’s left corner flag. Michael Bakare took the kick and sent it close to the goal mouth, but the Robins did enough to keep it out. Full time saw Nomads remain top of the JD Cymru Premier and extend their strong run of form to 15 league games without a loss.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND BY WILL CATTERALL

It’s great to be at Deeside for a Saturday 2:30 kick off – something we’ve rarely had so far this season, for a chance to reach the Nathaniel MG Cup final for the first time in over 20 years today. It will be mentioned elsewhere in this programme that today will be our fifth attempt to reach the final in a row, having fallen just short in the past four seasons. It’s a bizarre record on many accounts, as having reached the past two JD Welsh Cup finals and won one of them, and came runners up in last season’s Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup, we’re no stranger to success when it comes to fighting for silverware. All teams have thorns in their side, and the semi-final of this particular competition happens to be ours. Before the draw for the last four was made, our main priority was to be drawn at home, having lost here just once so far in 2019. Although we got the toughest opponent we could get, winning a cup is all about beating the best, and Bala definitely count amongst them. Games against the Lakesiders are always tough and often decided by fine margins. The quality both we and them is significant, which is why we’re two of North Wales’ leading sides with strong pedigrees in European competition. While we’re both fighting for Europe in the league, it’s worth noting the prize for winning this year’s Nathaniel MG Cup is a place in the 2020/21 Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup. Last season’s run to the final helped put Connah’s Quay Nomads on the map, and while we want to continue our (in)famous reputation in Scotland, Bala will want their own shot at a run for the Celtic Cup. Following today’s game, we’re spending another two weeks down in South Wales, playing Penybont on Saturday 30th November and then Abertillery Bluebirds in the JD Welsh Cup third round on the following Saturday. We’ll need all the support we can get to stay top of the league and reach the fourth round of the cup respectively, and really appreciate the support we’ve had during a period of regular away games down South. Score Prediction: Nomads 2-1 Bala Town Nomads’ Player of the Week: Jamie Insall When Jamie came to us to get back into football, he said once he got going he’d regularly be seeing the back of the net, and he’s followed through with that promise. Our No.10 has scored nine league goals so far, and looks well on his way to double figures in rich form at the moment. A clinical striker is the difference at any level, and with Jamie continuing to do what he’s doing, we look set for another exciting season as we enter the festive period. Let’s hope he can get the winner today! 10 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town

GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN

Hello, This weekend’s game with Bala town is a clash of the two most in-form teams in the JD Cymru Premier. With Jamie Insall knocking in the goals for Nomads, Chris Venables has been as prolific for the Lakesiders. The Nathanial MG Cup comes with an enhanced prize this year. The winners will be given one of the two places in next year’s Scottish Challenge Cup. We want to put an end to a remarkable run of semi final defeats today. We have lost the last four by 1-0. It’s time for us to make the final, but no doubt Bala have other ideas and this will be a well fought out confrontation. All from Bala are welcomed and may the best team win; and may that team be the Nomads. Recently our owner Gary Dewhurst posed the question on his Twitter account as to where you would invest if you had a million to put into a football club. Of course this was a hypothetical question and the answer depends on your objective in making the investment. If you desire to achieve solvency and aim not to make a similar investment year on year then a surplus of income over outgoing is your goal. Should you wish to generate a legacy and perpetuate your good name in a community then a different set of objectives will be important. If you seek to maximize your press and publicity footfall then another route beckons. The choices to achieve any of these goals appears to be ; a) Invest in a club on the outskirts of the English football League. One million pounds would not give you control of even one of the smaller and less fashionable clubs in the English Football League. It would not get you a significant shareholding in a Championship or Premier League club and certainly not a seat on the Board. Our local big name, reflecting in its former glory, are Wrexham. Typical of the sort of club you might invest in. They have a fine stadium, huge potential for support and a full time ethos. However in recent years they have had to sell the stadium and now rent it back on match days. Their excellent Colliers Park training ground went the same way and they now train on a Council owned public park without adequate facilities. They have a wage bill that would swallow your million in weeks and competitors who can raise and spend that sum several times over. Yet, with proper fiscal management you might occasionally break even and you would have constant media attention and would become pretty famous locally. You would expect to dip into your pocket constantly just to stand still. b) Invest in a JD Cymru Premier side. Four of the twelve sides in the League will play European football every year. The JD Cymru Premier sides who lost in the Preliminary round of this years Europa League played two games. They enjoyed memories that will be talked 14 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town

about for years to come. They received over £200,000 in prize money. Should they have won and then gone on to lose in the 1st Qualifying round they would have received £450,000. Half of your million would be more than enough to assemble a side and staff it to compete for one of those places. Should you be successful you would not need to invest for a further two years. c) Find a club outside of these Leagues and enjoy taking them into a higher sphere. Best of both worlds? One million would see you in control at almost all clubs outside the JD Cymru Premier. You could improve infrastructure to Cymru Premier standard by matching some of your money to the grants available. Get yourself a title contending side, enjoy the cup runs at the lower level and gather your seed corn for when you arrive at Level one. Lets say you put a million into Flint, Colwyn Bay or resuscitated Rhyl or Bangor. You would have success, promotion and possibly momentum. Could be fun. Well, looking at the stats and income from the English Pyramid and comparing it to the Welsh system seems to have provided the answer. Remember Maldon and Tiptree of the Isthmian League North beat meet Leyton Orient in the FA Cup first Round Proper. Their FA Cup run (so far) has consisted of six matches against other teams from their area, two from the same League and one giant kill. Their journey started back on 24 August against Saffron Walden Town in the preliminary round and they are way behind on the League fixtures. They have gained total prize money of £44,140. It’s the greatest season in their hundred year history: unlikely to be repeated too often and has generated less than half of what a top Cymru Premier club expects annually. So in the Welsh System you get to meet glamorous foreign opposition and travel to exciting places, you get it done in time not to decimate your fixture list and you earn ten times as much. I would say its much, much better than the prospect of an FA Cup trip to Slough. Next up for the Nomads are two consecutive trips to South Wales. We go to meet Penybont next Saturday and there is a supporters coach going. When I write there are only a couple of spaces left, so see Eddie today to book on. Then on Saturday 6th we meet Abertillery Bluebirds in the Welsh Cup. The hosts play on a Sports Center pitch with very limited spectator facilities and they state that this is the biggest game in their history. We are treating them with the respect they deserve and Andy has already travelled to watch them. We return to the stadium next for the League encounter with Bala Town on Friday December 20th. Today’s game is refereed by Robert Jenkins. Martin Roberts and Connor Fowler assist him with Tom Owen as 4th Official. We welcome them and thank them. Enjoy the game; Trevor Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town 15

THE LEAGUE CUP IN ALL IT’S FORMATS

DAVID RAPSON REFLECTS UPON THE HISTORY OF THE COMPETITION Established in 1992/93, the inaugural year of the (then) League of Wales, the League Cup competition has undergone many changes. It is considered to be the second most important domestic cup competition for Welsh football clubs after the older and more prestigious Welsh F.A. Cup. From 2019/20 the format expanded significantly with all 44 teams from the top two tiers of the Welsh football league system taking part as well as two wildcard entries. Twenty-eight clubs entered in Round 1 made up of any club without floodlights, two wildcard entries and the remaining teams ranked lowest in their respective Tier 2 league from the previous season. All rounds up to the semi-final stage have been regionalised. The fourteen winners joined the eighteen remaining sides in Round 2, seeded so that Premier League sides were not drawn against one another. The winner of the tournament will gain entry to the Scottish Challenge Cup in 2020/21. Prior to 2014/15 the competition featured only teams from the League of Wales/Welsh Premier League. In 1992/93 each club played eight group matches, home and away generally against local teams and our opponents were Flint Town United, Holywell Town, Mold Alexandra and Newtown. Mainly thanks to the novelty of having floodlit football at the Halfway Ground, our home ‘derby’ matches were well supported with an average ‘gate’ in excess of 500. The following two seasons witnessed a knockout competition with ties staged over two legs from the first round prior to group matches being reintroduced for the 1995/96 competition. Connah’s Quay Nomads were League Cup winners that year having played no fewer than ten games en route to the final with six at the group stage and home and away ties in the quarter and semi-finals. Eventually, Nomads overcame Ebbw Vale 1-nil in the final played at Caersws thanks to Stuart Rain’s deft back-heel to the feet of Peter Hughes who finished with aplomb. Since then the format of the competition has changed every few years between two-legged ties and group matches until the current format was introduced for the current campaign. Not until 2003 was a sponsor found when Loosemores Solicitors of Cardiff put their name to the League Cup. The competition carried the title of The Word Cup between 2012 and 2016, ‘the Word’ being a Cardiff-based telecommunications provider while Nathaniel MG Cars, a car sales company from Bridgend and Cardiff has provided welcome sponsorship for the past four seasons. Because the League Cup has largely been regionalised, the 1996 cup final was the for many years the solitary occasion when we have been paired with a team from South Wales. Commencing last year, however, the semi-final draw was ‘open’ and allowed us the chance to avoid The New Saints and instead entertain Cardiff Metropolitan University, beaten finalists in 2018, in what was our 90th League Cup tie, Cardiff Met providing Nomads’ with a 20th different opponent over those games.

16 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Bala Town

Nine different clubs have won the cup with The New Saints way out in front of the pack with nine wins from ten appearances in the final. Perhaps not surprisingly Barry Town come second with four successes but the next on the list of winners may tax your brains. Three clubs have won the League Cup on three occasions each, so can you name them? The answers are: Afan Lido, Caersws and Carmarthen Town. Lido have been in three finals and won them all, beating Caersws on penalties in 1993, Bangor City (1-0) a year later and Newtown on penalties in the 2012 final. Rhyl (2 successes), Llanelli and Cardiff Metropolitan University are the other victors. Of the 19 teams to reach the League Cup final, Afan Lido and Connah’s Quay Nomads are the only clubs never to have lost one! Without doubt the strangest statistic surrounds Bangor City, three times winners of the Welsh Premier League and with five Welsh Cups under their belt since 1998. Along with Barry Town and Rhyl, The Citizens have appeared in six League Cup finals but unlike the other two, Bangor City has lost the lot! Admittedly three of those games were lost after a penalty shootout but the 2000 final saw Barry Town thump Bangor 6-0, the highest margin of victory to date. Four seasons back Denbigh Town became the first club from outside the Welsh Premier League to reach the final (Cambrian & Clydach BGC were the second last season), defeating the Nomads 1-0 in a dramatic semi-final. That was the first of five successive semi-final appearances for the Nomads and the four prior to this afternoon all ended in 1-0 defeats. A statistic we would like to change for the better.
