A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR It’s a warm welcome from me here tonight to our spectators, as well as the travelling staff, players and supporters from Newtown. Last week’s game at Bala was a rollercoaster, but it ended up being a great point keeping us four points clear at the top of the league with one less game to play. I was delighted to announce that Emma-Clare Hewitt was appointed to our board this week and it’s another great step forward for us as a club. As always, thanks for your support and enjoy the tonight’s game. Vicky

ROBINS VISIT DEESIDE AS NOMADS LOOK TO MAINTAIN GAP AT THE TOP Friday night will see Connah’s Quay Nomads host Newtown in the JD Cymru Premier with our sights firmly set on maintaining our four point lead at the top of the table. Last weekend’s draw were the first points The Nomads had dropped in the second phase of the league having won against Barry, Caernarfon and TNS in the previous three games, and with Barry’s late fightback at TNS, we maintained our four point lead at the top of the league table. Newtown come into the game having lost their last three competitive games, losing to Bala and Caernarfon in the league as well as being knocked out of the Welsh Cup by TNS, but we know the challenge that Newtown can provide with them having beaten TNS in the league back in early February. Newtown’s previous visit to Deeside Stadium saw a 3-1 victory for The Nomads in a game which saw Sean McCallister send the visitors ahead early in the proceedings before goals from Jamie Insall, Michael Bakare and a Sam Barnes own goal gave The Nomads all three points. 2-2 BALA TOWN

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

NOMADS DRAW WITH LAKESIDERS IN CLASH AT BALA Connah’s Quay Nomads played out a 2-2 draw with Bala Town FC on Friday evening in the JD Cymru Premier. Michael Wilde and Jamie Insall scored for Nomads in the first half, but strikes from Chris Venables and Kieran Smith ensured the spoils were shared. • Nomads came into game top of the league by four points • 3rd minute Wilde header sent them ahead early on • Insall retook lead but 78th minute Smith strike ensured a draw • Results elsewhere see Nomads maintain four point lead The game was another crucial one in the race for JD Cymru Premier title, with Nomads in first place with a four point lead over reigning champions The New Saints in second. The Friday night clash at Maes Tegid was Nomads’ chance to bounce back from a 2-1 JD Welsh Cup quarter final defeat to Cardiff Met at Deeside, which was their first loss at home since March 2019. Andy Morrison made only two changes to his side from that game, bringing Danny Harrison and Michael Bakare in for John Disney and Callum Roberts. January signing Craig Curran kept his place upfront, as did Kris Owens in the left midfield. His counterpart Colin Caton meanwhile started leading league top scorer Chris Venables along with Louis Robles and former Nomads left back Sean Smith. The match got off to a dream start for the visiting Nomads, when just two minutes after kick off, they took the lead. From a Michael Bakare corner kick, Wilde went low into the pack around the six yard box and headed in to take the lead.

But it was short-lived, with Bala equalising just five minutes later from a well worked goal which saw Venables able to slot into the Nomads’ net from close range from a square ball via the left wing. A tight and tense affair followed, as both sides looked to tighten up but get themselves in front. In the 11th, Louis Robles got in a good position to strike for Bala, but Danny Holmes was able to dispossess him before he got the shot off. Nomads hit back with attacks of their own, using Danny Holmes’ long throw ins and Kris Owens’ wicked crosses to test Bala in their area. Despite their efforts, keeper Josh Tibbetts was able to keep them out as the game approached half an hour played. In the 32nd there was one of the chances of the half, as Chris Venables went clear at the Nomads’ goal but headed just wide to see his side go close to making it 2-1 at Maes Tegid. On 35 minutes, Connah’s Quay got in the Bala end from a deflected Craig Curran effort from 20 yards going out for a corner. They kept possession after the set piece, and saw at least three close range attempts get blocked in a crowded Lakesiders area. But in the 39th, they finally found a way through when Jamie Insall rose up in the Bala area to send a great header curling near the top left corner of Tibbets’ goal. Insall’s goal gave Nomads a highly valuable lead at half time, but the game remained tight and end to end as the second half began. Bala were eagerly looking to bring the game back on level terms, with Venables again threatening with a header that went wide in the 46th. They continued to put pressure on the Nomads end, but they soaked up the pressure with Lewis Brass commanding his area with a number of catches and clearances as the game hit the hour mark. At the other end, Michael Bakare did well to hold up the ball and force a corner, whilst George Horan was making decisive tackles to stop Bala’s runs as the game continued its tight and tense feel. After the 70th minute, Nomads won a free kick around 23 yards from the Bala area, which Bakare took and sent to Curran, who couldn’t get a header on the ball before keeper Tibbets had swiped it away. With 15 minutes to go, they made their first substitution, swapping Michael Bakare for Callum Roberts as the game entered its latter stages. But in the 78th, it was brought level after Kieran Smith got in front of the ball close to the Nomads’ goal after a long range free kick, and was able to slot it in from around six yards. As the 80th minute arrived with the game level at 2-2, both teams went out to try and grab a winner, but largely cancelled each other out as a consequence. Kris Owens cross glanced across the face of the Bala goal, but went out for a goal kick with no red shirt there able to convert it. Goalscorer Smith then had another effort in the 83rd, but it was held by Brass. There was more drama in the 87th minute, when Bala forward Louis Robles was a shown a straight red by referee Bryn Markham-Jones for dissent. Nomads sprung to take advantage of their one-man advantage in the little them they had left, bringing on Sameron Dool in place of Callum Morris, and targeting the Bala area with long throw-ins and crosses deep into the three additional minutes of injury time. Full time saw Nomads take a hard fought point from Maes Tegid, and maintain their four point lead at the top of the table after a late equaliser from Barry Town at Park Hall. REFLECTIONS David Rapson looks back at previous league games between The Nomads and Newtown Since ‘The Robins’ are one of only two clubs to have retained membership of the league since it was inaugurated (Aberystwyth Town is the other) it is not surprising that we have met Newtown AFC on 58 previous occasions since 1992. While Connah’s Quay has the edge on the number of victories, we have scored only three goals more than our opponents in total. In fact, matches between the two clubs have generally been even affairs although only a dozen games have been drawn. Just four of those ended goalless, three of them at Latham Park. The Nomads took advantage of Newtown’s slow start to life in the infant League of Wales by gaining a ‘double’ over The Robins in 1992/93. Having won the away fixture 2-1, goals from Stewart Ritchie, Barry Thomas, Dave O’Gorman and Dave Davies sealed a 4-1 success at the Halfway Ground in March 1993. Having made his debut in a League Cup tie at Newtown (October 1992), O’Gorman went on to score 25 goals in his first season with the club. The following three seasons brought little success for us, however, as The Robins won on each of their visits to Deeside including a 4-1 victory in September 1994 when Mark Williams scored twice. The balance was redressed in December 1996 as Nomads ran out 4-0 winners in their home fixture, gaining the upper hand soon after half-time by netting three goals in 15 minutes. Honours were even in 1997/98 as both fixtures ended 1-1, the third consecutive drawn game between the sides at Latham Park following a couple of goalless affairs. Unusually, the 1998/99 encounter at the Deeside Stadium was played on a Thursday with Nomads winning 3-2 after an explosive first half. Mark Roberts gave Newtown an early lead which Carl Smyth cancelled out after 25 minutes. A minute before half time Stuart Rain put Connah’s Quay ahead for the first time adding his second and Nomads’ third straight from the restart to give the home side a 3-1 advantage. Mark Thomas reduced the deficit after the break, but Nomads hung on to claim all three points. Nomads remained undefeated in their home games against Newtown for the seven seasons between December 1996 and March 2003, although three of those fixtures were drawn. Following a 0-0 stalemate in February 2001 8

we entertained Newtown ten months later when defenders Gary McCosh and George Horan netted in between a brace of strikes from The Robins’ Justin Wickham.

The tables soon turned, however, for Newtown completed a league ‘double’ over us in both the 2003/04 and 2004/05 campaigns and added a further insult by winning the next game too! On 17th April 2004 Danny Barton registered the first hat-trick in games between the two sides. Although Connah’s Quay took the lead on Deeside a minute before the break, Barton scored his goals in a twelve-minute spell around the hour mark and Rain’s late strike was mere consolation. A year later, having beaten us 2-1 at Latham Park, The Robins won 3-0 on Deeside, Mike Brown scoring twice and notched a fifth straight victory when that man Barton scored both goals in our first home match of the 2005/06 season.

Probably the most memorable meeting was the 3-3 draw on Deeside in November 2008. On a misty afternoon, which became foggy, Newtown went two goals up inside four minutes. Undeterred, Nomads hit back with a vengeance laying siege to the visitor’s goal and scoring three times courtesy of Peter Doran (2) and Adam Dickinson. Disappointingly for the home fans, an 89th minute penalty allowed Newtown to share the points.

Since returning to the Premier League in August 2012 following our two years in the Cymru Alliance, there has been a further 22 league fixtures with Newtown, six of them in the second phase of seasons when both clubs found themselves in the same half of the league table after the mid-season split, as this year. Overall in those matches Connah’s Quay has had slightly the better results although in 2015/16 Newtown won three of the four matches, as did the Nomads last time around.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND By Will Catterall

Hello and welcome to a view from the stand where with six games to go, the title race is well and truly on in the JD Cymru Premier. There was not long ago a time when, with Craig Harrison as manager at TNS, the league would be wrapped up by a massive 25 points by this point at the season. Now, we’re locked in an enthralling race with TNS with a four point lead over them at the top of the table. Tonight, the challenge remains staying there, with three points a must for any side playing at home in the top six this season. It won’t be easy challenge against an always tough Newtown side, but as ever the lads will be ready to go under the floodlights and some hopefully better weather than the storms we’ve been forced to play through recently. Bala away in phase two is one of the toughest games of the season, so despite taking the lead twice, to come away with a 2-2 draw and remain four points clear at the top has to be a positive. With our game finished, the night had a classic twist that title races so often see, with Barry equalising against TNS in the final minutes of their live Sgorio game. Whatever happens on the pitch tonight, we’ve seen some great reminders of how well placed the club is during the past week. Emma-Clare Hewitt has been welcomed as a new board member, bringing our female representation at a board level to one of the best in the league – something the whole game needs to continue looking at and improving one.

You don’t need to be told how vital the end of season run is, but it needs to be clear how important support in the stands will be in this period. Last week at Bala, we made up nearly half of the crowd, and would’ve taken only a handful just a couple of seasons ago. The growth of our away support has been an immense and a catalyst for our growth this season, so we need you now more than ever. Make sure you’re here next week, at 5:15pm on Saturday, for a massive home game against Barry. Then, we travel to Caernarfon for another 5:15pm kick off in the following Saturday. The game is live on TV, but it would be great to see as many of you as possible in what could prove to be another famous night for Nomads. For now, let’s get behind the lads tonight and hope we continue as the top team in Wales at the end of the night. Score Prediction: Nomads 1-0 Newtown AFC Player of the Week: Declan Poole A mainstay in the squad for a long time now, Declan’s skill and pace in the midfield is constantly driving us forward to create chances. His efforts for the side are always a huge part of our results, and we hope to see him in the thick of it as usual this evening. 10 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown

Callum Roberts has meanwhile made the Wales C squad thanks to some fantastic performances throughout this season. From battling with Kilmarnock and Belgrade in Europe to keeping clean sheets in the Nathaniel MG Cup, his call up is well deserved and we’ll be watching his progress with the C team closely.
