EDITOR’S WELCOME Good evening and welcome to Deeside Stadium for the final game of our home marathon. It'll give me a few weeks off from preparing matchday programmes like this, and hopefully allow me to get our next one spot on with plenty of time to prepart for it! Tonight's programme takes a big look at the academy structure at our club with Jay Catton and Trevor Green both praising the success from our graduates and coaches in what is one of the best setups in Wales behind the likes of Swansea and Cardiff City in my opinion. No doubt tonight will be a great game as both sides will be looking for the win and as we know, it must be decided on the night, so we could see extra time and penalties potentially. Enjoy the game and come on The Nomads! Nik

MATCH PREVIEW
Semi final place up for grabs Tonight's game sees an all Welsh Premier League tie as The Nomads face Rhyl in the Quarter Finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup. With a place in the Semi Finals at stake, both sides will no doubt be looking to advance in the first cup competition to feature Welsh Premier League sides this season. The Nomads reached the semi finals last season only to be dumped out by eventual finalists, Denbigh Town, and while The Nomads took a measure of revenge on Denbigh in the previous round, they will be looking to ensure their place in the semi's with a win here tonight. Rhyl however will be looking to bounce back from a recent poor run of form. The Lilywhites come into the game on the back of four straight losses, the first of which came here in a 2-0 defeat, a month ago when goals from Les Davies and Michael Wilde were enough to give The Nomads the points in the league. Cup games are completely different prospects altogether however, and ahead of the game, Jay Catton outlined that, saying; "Tonight will be a tuogh fixture against a strong Rhyl side who are having a good season - level on points with fifth placed Cardiff Met is a testament to what they have achieved to date. We arrive at tonight's game on the back of a 3-1 victory over Denbigh Town which saw four first team debuts for Conor Harwood, Luke Blizzard, Jake Leonard and Jordan Manley which now brings academy graduates up to 30 at the club which is a great achievement. Tonight will be an even tougher challenge if we are to gain a semi final place against a strong Rhyl side who have plenty of youth and pace in their ranks. Following Sunday's game at home to Cardiff Met we earned a point in a very tight affair for both sides. Although disappointed to not have got all three points, the draw has maintained our unbeaten run for the season with only five goals conceded which is testament to the players." Catton concluded; "We approach another huge period in both cup and league action leading up to the split and hopefully our continued work ethic and desire in game can gain a positive result this evening." Nomads held in deadlock with Cardiff Met The Nomads were held to a 0-0 draw with Cardiff Met on Sunday afternoon. Despite a game of dramatic moments and major goalscoring opportunities, the spoils were shared between the two teams. The game began and Cardiff Met established themselves quickly, with Jordan Lam forcing a corner for the visitors before Ben Bowler sent a curling effort just over from 20 yards. A defensive mix up in the seventh minute gave Lam the 6

opportunity to send the ball across the face of the Nomads goal line, where The Nomads were fortunate not to concede a goal. The Nomads then threatened the Cardiff Met end, which Nathan Woolfe striking wide at the right post from 10 yards with Les Davies just missing a deft cross from Woolfe in the 16th minute yards from the Met goal. As the half went on, both teams continued to match each other, with Cardiff Met using their exceptional fitness levels to threaten The Nomads on the counter, whilst The Nomads were trying to break down the visitors' defence to get clear on goal. Les Davies did get the ball in the back of the net from a header, but the goal was disallowed in contentious circumstances with the claim that John Disney had been blocking Cardiff Met’s
goalkeeper Will Fuller. After a hard fought first half, both teams went in at half time satisfied with the score line, but knew the three points were there for the taking. The second half saw early changes rung with Matty Owen replacing Nathan Woolfe. Les Davies received the ball inside the Met area from a Williams pass, but was unable to get a shot away in a tangle with a Met defender. Matty Owen was one of a number of Nomads players to have an unsuccessful strike, with his 20 yard effort going wide of the Cardiff Met goal. Cardiff Met were handed a brilliant opportunity to score when Danny Harrison lost the ball in his own half, with Adam Roscrow running towards goal unchallenged only for his shot to go wide of John Danby’s left post. The Nomads then introduced Michael Wilde in place of Tom Field with around thirty minutes to play, and Wilde had an immediate impact latching onto a long ball only for Met goalkeeper Fuller to sweep and save. In one of The Nomads’ best chances of the game in the 63rd minute, Michael Wilde thought he had scored during a goalmouth scramble, but the ball was cleared by Met’s Emlyn Lewis on the line and the game remained goalless with the Deeside atmosphere growing tense. In the game’s closing stages, both teams pushed hard for a winning goal making for a great finish to the spectacle. The Nomads would again lose possession in their own half in the 84th minute, allowing Met substitute Jon Littlemore to make a run into The Nomads' area on his own, only for Jay Owen to make a vital tackle to halt the attack. Shelton Payne who had came on for Nick Rushton saw a golden chance to win the game missed when Matty Williams laid him on yards from the Met goal only for his low effort to go wide from yards out. Both teams continued to try and unlock each other for the remaining game time including four additional minutes, but the game ended 0-0 in what was both a hard fought point and frustrating result for The Nomads.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND
BY WILL CATTERALL Hello and welcome to A View From The Stand where just two days after our last Dafabet Welsh Premier League game we’re back at Deeside for our Nathaniel MG Cup quarter final against Rhyl. A warm welcome to their travelling fans as we’re all aware midweek games can be a challenge to get to. Around two months, ago we were looking forward to what has turned into a run of eight consecutive home games. Whilst the logistics are obviously easy, this run has brought challenges to all of us with teams coming here wanting to take us down and ruin our unbeaten record. Such a long run has had an unnatural feel to it, but in Welsh football you deal with the weird and wonderful and there will definitely be more of that to come this season. Rhyl come into today’s game after a run of four losses in the league, which only makes them even more up for a cup win tonight against us as North East Wales rivals. It speaks of Rhyl’s quality that despite their losses they are still in the top six, and may well be there for phase two. We can also claim to have come through a tough time, with our position of second and an unbeaten record still intact despite an unprecedented injury crisis at the club. On Sunday, there was only one goal in three of the Dafabet Welsh Premier League’s games, but this was a rarity. On Saturday, Rhyl lost to Bangor 3-2, whilst on Friday Bala and Druids incredibly drew 4-4. These are just some of the results seen in what has been a fantastic league season so far – so think twice before you let someone tell you the WPL is boring! A coveted place in the Nathaniel MG Cup semi finals is up for grabs tonight, and both clubs will want the chance to get there. For The Nomads, it would give us the chance to right our poor result against Denbigh in the semi finals last season, and maybe give us a shot at what would be our first major final in many years. Enjoy the game tonight and brave the cold to get behind the lads. Nomads Ultras Prediction: The Nomads 1-0 Rhyl Nomads Ultras' Player of the Week: Lewis Short Lewis Short has been outstanding for The Nomads ever since his arrival in the summer. He was influential in our victory over Stabaek, and has established himself as one our key players week in week out. With tireless work and an eye for creating chances, we’ll need him to help us get to the semi finals tonight.

GREEN'S PIECE
BY TREVOR GREEN Good Evening and welcome back to Rhyl FC. We beat them in a competitive game here only three weeks ago - It was a good match and a bit of a battle before a second goal gave us breathing space. With our team having played a Dafabet Welsh Premier League match only 50 hours ago, we will struggle to get anyone who picked up any sort of a knock back to fitness. I would therefore expect to see some of our under 19’s in action again. Connor Harwood, Luke Blizard and Jake Leonard did well outfield with Jordan Manley keeping goal very confidently when he came on in the last round against Denbigh Town.
We should expect no less though, because our premier youth players experience conditions that are a far cry from those of a few years back. When I first came to The Nomads (only eight years ago) we had no youth set up at all. It was a struggle to get players in - the reputation of the club was appalling in the community and we started off with Levi Lloyd and Darren Wynne holding trials at Dock Road looking for 54 lads between 10 and 16 to form three Academy sides. Only five lads turned up, and four of them had been unable to get a place at a local Sunday boy’s club team. They eventually got a side together at Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16. The sides often played on awful surfaces, and with only old fashioned Astroturf to train on. It wasn’t only us suffering - I remember going to one game being played on a rugby pitch with the football goal nets taped to the rugby crossbar! 10
The Nomads vs Rhyl
These days, our boys are fully kitted out with the best kits and training gear. They even have club shirts and ties to wear to functions and AGM’s. They play on expensive and exceptional 3G surfaces with the best medical, sports science and coaching available. Now, our youth teams are likely to have played more times abroad than most first teams and if they play tonight then their last game will have been on Friday when they met Fredrikstad of Norway in a friendly. I am delighted that relationships between our two clubs are now so much better than ever before. I would like to think we are friends for all but the 90 minutes on the pitch nowadays; we welcome them in that spirit. Mike Jones and his officials, the supporters and Niall and his playing staff are offered the best of our hospitality and are welcome today. Since their defeat here they have lost two away games, conceding four both times, not netting at Aber but scoring three against Druids. They also won by the only goal away at Llandudno in this competition too. They are still doing much better than most neutrals expected though. Fifth as I write with fourteen points from eleven games. So we know we are going to have to do well to win. Next Sunday we have an away match! Remember them? We will go to meet TNS and it will be seven weeks, and eight games, since we last travelled. Unprecedented and so unfair. Now we set off on an odyssey that doesn’t bring us back until Saturday December 10th. Crazy stuff, quite the worst fixture plan I’ve ever experienced and so unhelpful to our players. However, we have extracted a great point’s haul despite the huge injury crisis we have experienced. Fourteen points and a cup win is not bad going. If we can come back with nine points from five difficult games we will be set up to make a high placing in the top six. We have had an early look at phase two’s fixture plan. I’m pleased to say that from February onward it will be one at home followed by one away. Tonight’s refereeing team is Iwan Griffith with the whistle, whilst John Jones and Alex Livesey carry flags, and Huw Jones has the board. We are grateful for their support; it’s a cliché I repeat every week, but true none the less. Without them we would have no football. Enjoy the game, Trevor

Wilde and Davies help secure win over Rhyl The Nomads retained their undefeated record in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Rhyl on Sunday afternoon. Goals from Les Davies and Michael Wilde were enough to secure victory in front of a crowd of 316 at Deeside. The Nomads went into the game off the back of a draw with Llandudno during the week, with Rhyl looking to extend a run of five games unbeaten, their most recent victory against arch-rivals Bangor City. The game began and it took just 30 seconds for an
14
The Nomads vs Rhyl
incident to occur, when Aaron Simpson made a rash tackle on Tom Field for which he received a yellow card. The Nomads looked to assert some dominance in the early stages, with Les Davies trying to flick a header onto a goal side Matty Williams, before Williams sent a Nathan Woolfe cross just over the Rhyl goal with a header in The Nomads’ first chance of the afternoon. The visiting Rhyl side were eager to continue their good form with Carl Lamb getting in a good position to the right of The Nomads' area only to send a looping header over the goal. Not only did The Nomads have to do battle with Rhyl but also the windy conditions which caused difficulty for both sides. In the 15th minute, Nathan Woolfe sent a cross into the Rhyl area which Davies headed towards goal only for it to be blocked by keeper Owen Evans. The Nomads kept up their pressure on the away goal with Nick Rushton having an effort saved, before Les Davies broke the deadlock for The Nomads in the 19th minute. From a Nathan Woolfe cross, Les Davies struck
the ball well from six yards to send it past Evans and into the bottom left corner, giving The Nomads a deserved lead. Despite going a goal down, Rhyl remained in the game and were dangerous when on the attack, seen when Rob Hughes had an effort from 20 yards which forced Danby to save low to his left. The Nomads were unsuccessful in their pursuit of a second goal before half time, despite having eight to nine players all in the Rhyl half at some stages of play. Les Davies and Nick Rushton both had chances from running at the goal, with the away defence forced to clear the ball away for throw-ins and corners at various intervals. The competitiveness of the game spilled over with an argument between John Danby and Carl Lamb at the end of the first half, with referee Bryn Markham Jones showing both players a yellow card after Lamb caught Danby late. At the start of the second half, The Nomads were dealt a blow when John Disney was forced off with a suspected concussion following a first half clash. Matty Owen came on as his replacement along with Rakim Newton of Rhyl who replaced Toby Jones. As in the first half, The Nomads opened the second with most of the possession as Rhyl searched for their equaliser with Newton of Rhyl sending a cutting shot wide of goal on 49 minutes. With the hour mark approaching, a further Rhyl substitution was made with Carl Lamb making way for Porya Ahmadi. The game started to become more physical, with the resulting free kick from a foul on Tom Field being cleared before Les Davies headed away a Rhyl free kick taken just two yards from The Nomads’ area. John Danby then came off his line to break down a Rhyl attack on the left wing with a sliding tackle which referee Markham-Jones deemed a foul, but not enough to bring a second yellow for the 'keeper. The Nomads made their final substitutions at once, with the duo of Michael Wilde and Lewis Short replacing Nick Rushton and Sean Smith. As the game entered its final 20 minutes, Rhyl began to feel time slipping away from them and forced some good chances. Rob Hughes used his skill and pace to enter the Nomads area before being blocked by Woolfe, before Dan Collins had a cross into the box saved by Danby. In the 74th minute, a Woolfe corner fell to Jay Owen, who played a sublime through ball to Wilde through on goal only for the pass to miss him by a yard in what would have been a clear goalscoring opportunity. Yet Wilde made no mistake in the 82nd minute, when he headed in The Nomads’ second. From a Wes Baynes cross, Wilde rose unchallenged to connect with the ball and send it straight into the bottom right corner of the Rhyl net. The Nomads controlled play for the remainder the game, but in the third minute of injury time their clean sheet came under threat from a Rhyl free kick just outside their area. Rob Hughes stepped up, but ultimately had two unsuccessful efforts from the set piece which were the last action of the day.

RHYL'S HISTORY
Football in Rhyl dates from the late 1870s and at one time there were several Rhyl clubs in existence. Rhyl F.C. became founder members of the Welsh League, formed in 1890, but withdrew the following year. They reformed as Rhyl Athletic in 1893 and became founder members of the North Wales Coast League, winning the title in 1894–95. Rhyl Athletic joined forces with Rhyl Town in 1898 and in an ambitious move switched to the Anglo-Welsh competition known as The Combination. Despite financial crises, they remained in membership until the league disbanded at the end of the 1910–11 season. Under the name of Rhyl United, they rejoined the North Wales Coast League but, following the Great War, they moved to the North Wales Alliance, before becoming founder members of the Welsh National League (North) in 1921. Rhyl won the title in 1925–26 and became a limited company in 1928 as Rhyl Athletic. In 1929 Rhyl applied to join the Football League but York City became the only non-league team elected to the Third Division North. With North Wales football in turmoil in the early 1930s, Rhyl sought to realise their ambitions elsewhere. Another unsuccessful application to the Football League was made in 1932 before joining the Birmingham and District League. Seeking relief from the onerous travelling to the Birmingham area, Rhyl successfully applied to join the Cheshire County League in 1936 and began one of the most successful chapters in the club's history. In a post-war purple patch, Rhyl won the league title twice – in 1947–48 and 1950–51 – and the Welsh Cup twice in succession. In 1952, they beat Merthyr Tydfil 4–3 and became the first non-league side in the modern era to retain the trophy, by defeating Chester City 2–1 the following season. Rhyl had been losing finalists to Cardiff City in 1930 and Crewe Alexandra in 1937, but did not feature in the final again until 1993, when they lost 5–0 to Cardiff City. Between 1948 and 1972 Rhyl appeared regularly in the 18
The Nomads vs Rhyl
first round proper of the FA Cup. In 1957 Rhyl reached the fourth round proper, losing 3–0 away to Bristol City. In the Cheshire County League, success eluded them for several years before they won the title in 1972. On the dissolution of the Cheshire County League in 1982, Rhyl became members of the North West Counties League, winning promotion to the Northern Premier League in their first season. In 1992, they reluctantly decided to join the League of Wales but, because their application was received too late, they were placed instead in the Cymru Alliance, the second level of the pyramid system. In 1993–94, they won the title by six points and gained promotion to the League of Wales. Over the years, the club have produced players of the highest calibre more than once, including Graham Williams (West Bromwich Albion), Barry Horne (Everton), Andy Jones (Charlton Athletic), Andy Holden (Oldham Athletic) and most recently Lee Trundle (Bristol City) after seeing his career revitalised in his short spell with Rhyl in 2000–01. For many years the club struggled in the top flight of Welsh football but, after being taken over by a consortium led by former player Peter Parry, a significant improvement in results saw Rhyl become one of the Welsh Premier League's leading clubs. In season 2003–04, the club won the Welsh Premier League, qualifying for the Champions League qualification rounds (though they lost 7–1 on aggregate, to Skonto Riga of Latvia in the first qualifying round), and were winners of the League Cup and Welsh Cup, although they lost the final of the FAW Premier Cup 4–1 to Wrexham. Rhyl completed a famous quadruple by rounding off the season with a 6–0 win against Halkyn United in the Final of the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup. Rhyl could not reproduce their quadruple heroics in 2004–05. The club finished runners-up in the Welsh
Premier League to TNS and also fell to the same team in both the Welsh Cup semi-final and Welsh Premier Cup quarter-final. A defeat to Carmarthen Town in the Final of the Welsh League Cup compounded a trophyless season for The Whites, although European qualification was gained by their runner-up finish in the Welsh Premier League In 2005–06, Rhyl recorded their first-ever win in European competition when they defeated Lithuanian side FK Atlantas 2–1 in the home leg of the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. Rhyl lost the away leg 3–2, but progressed on the away goals rule, the first Welsh team to make the second qualifying round since Barry Town in 1996–97. They lost in the second round against Norwegian club Viking F.K., 3–1 on aggregate. The Lilywhites claimed more silverware in the 2005–06 domestic season when they lifted the Welsh Cup, beating Bangor City 2–0 at the Racecourse Ground, and the North Wales Challenge Cup after a 2–1 win over Denbigh Town in the Final. A third-placed finish in the Welsh Premier League meant Rhyl would compete for a third year in a row in European Club competitions. Rhyl's 2006–07 European adventure in the UEFA Cup was ended at the first round with a 2–1 aggregate defeat by Lithuanian side FK Sūduva of Marijampole. Back in the UEFA Cup in 2007–08, Rhyl achieved a memorable 3–1 home win over FC Haka only to be eliminated on away goals after a 2–0 defeat in the second leg in Finland. The club participated in the 2008 Intertoto Cup but were defeated in the first round 9–3 on aggregate by Bohemians of Ireland. In 2009 Rhyl won the Welsh Premier League for the second time comfortably finishing ahead of nearest challengers Llanelli, beating many club records including most wins in a season and most successive league wins. Rhyl took part in the Champions League starting in the second qualifying round against Partizan of Serbia. However, their efforts proved futile as Rhyl fell to Partizan with an aggregate score of 12–0, including an
8–0 rout at the Stadion Partizana. On 30 July 2009 Rhyl made an announcement that Allan Bickerstaff had left the club and defender Greg Strong was to become player/manager. On 17 May 2010, it was announced that Rhyl's Welsh Premier licence had been revoked. Their appeal was unsuccessful and they were relegated to the Cymru Alliance. The club finished Cymru Alliance runners-up to gap Connah's Quay in 2010–11 and 2011–12. GAP secured promotion to the Welsh Premier League in 2012, having failed to obtain a domestic licence in 2011, leaving Rhyl as potential favourites for the title in 2012–13. From the terraces, Mike Jones was announced as the club's new general manager. Rhyl started the 2012–13 season magnificently, winning their first 8 games. On 6 May 2013, having won the league title on 20 April, Rhyl beat Cefn Druids 2–0, thereby becoming the first club to complete a Cymru Alliance season unbeaten. In winning 24 matches and drawing 6, Rhyl scored 100 goals and secured promotion back to the Welsh Premier League after an absence of three years. On 20 August 2013 Rhyl announced a 3 year sponsorship deal with Corbett Sports which would see the Belle Vue stadium name changed to the Corbett Sports Stadium. In May 2015 it was announced that manager Greg Strong had left the club by "mutual consent". Former player Gareth Owen was then appointed as manager, with Mark Roberts as his assistant. In February 2015 with the club struggling near the foot of the table Gareth and Mark left the club and 24 year old Academy Director, Niall McGuinness was appointed as First Team Manager with his dad, Laurie McGuinness as his assistant.
