According to Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) , during their 2021 second quarter survey, there was little interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among young Filipinos.

This was also cited as one of the reasons why the Philippines is one of the countries in Southeast Asia to innovate last because of Filipinos’ lack of interest for innovation and STEM-related progression.

As a result, doors of opportunities were opened to encourage Filipinos to take STEM Track or STEMrelated college degrees, this includes; scholarship offers, pledges, and incentives in exchange for their service.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Scholarship is one of the government agencies that offers academic aid to those who are interested in taking the aforementioned track.

“First, ang ilang gi promise jud kay allowances, from book allowance and monthly allowance. Ang ilahang allowance is monthly jud gasulod kay gipabuhat man jud mi nila ug account sa landbank” Sir Jorem Verola, a former DOST Scholar and a current teacher in CNHS stated.

Harnessing mathematical potential and enhancement of critical logic among the learners uplifted Compostela National High School’s selected senior high school learners from Science, Technology and Engineering (STEM) to participate in the Problem Solving and Enrichment Training (ProbSET) Olympiad . The Olympiad materialized last November 19 and 26 via blended modality, with three participants hailing from Compostela National High School namely; Lexie Angely Agopalo, Jane Mamon, and Daniel Marro Castillo, coached by Engr. Jaime Alegado.

from his parents, he was also receiving monetary support from DOST. In addition, pursuant to RA 7687 or Return of Service Condition, upon completion of the Science and Technology course, scholars/graduates are required to render a service to the country, preferably along his/her field of specialization.

“Since that point in my life, my family has experienced financial difficulties which have hindered me and my siblings from attending college. I believe it has an additional advantage who are from the STEM strand”, Jayson Cagape, STEM 12 student stressed. He also said that everyone can still apply regardless of their track but being a STEM student has a perk since it is essential to possess background and prior knowledge about the field.

“Aware ko nga kasagaran madawat kay STEM pero naa man chance nga madawat ang laing strand so why not diba kay what if makapasar?” Grade 12 HUMSS student, Kervy Cadiente stressed. When asked about the applications, Cadiente expressed that he did not find it unfair if STEM students are most likely to qualify for the scholarship since they clearly have an advantage considering the DOST’s prioritized courses in college.

On the contrary, there are non-government organizations and foundations who are still open for applicants. This type of scholarship offers do not use SHS tracks in determining acceptance.

Classes takes turn in CNHS: Separation of classes induce adjustments

By: Venice Heart Cabiling

Adjusting to the new setups were done by students at Compostela national high school on March 7 week after the earthquake happened due to the classrooms that are not safe for the student to use and it causes difficulties for their studies. Their difficulties do not just center on their education but their adjustments to the new classrooms they occupy and the restrictions that they need to follow.

"Given the situation where a series of fortuitous events are recursive, especially earthquakes. In times like this, we have to prioritize the safety of our students without compromising their learnings" said Ma'am Michelle Dinampo, one of the Grade 10 teachers.

However, for some students this setup is fine and somehow effective. According to Jenny Dane Cabiling, a Grade 12 student who is affected by this set up, it gives them time to rest and do their activities. Despite the need to adjust, they continue to strive for their studies and nevermind the downside.
