Last year the Sunday afternoon Ceilli Dancing was a huge success. A full house enjoyed the top quality music which was provided by UI Bhriain. This year promises to be every bit as good. The dancing will be followed by another music Sessiùn. Pride of place will again go to the concertina, fiddle and spoons as a nod to both Jimmy and Jack. Even when Father Time was making it more and more difficult for Jack to play the concertina he'd still raise a smile when he ran those spoons along his arms & legs. There is an open invitation to all fiddle and concertina players to just come along and join in. Anyone wishing to participate or get involved in any way should contact Joan or John at 068 27112.or info@golfballybunion.com

TARBERT COMMUNITY ASSIST IN LEAH’S FIGHT

Leah Carmody is a daughter of Michael (Tarbert, Co. Kerry) and Aileen nee Mc Shane (Strabane, Co. Tyrone) who reside in New York. Leah was hospitalised after taking what appeared to be a harmless tumble at school. Following routine testing it was discovered that Leah who is 6 years old had a brain tumour. This required a shunt to be inserted in her skull to relieve the pressure. She underwent two biopsies but suffered a stroke during this procedure, which has affected her memory and leaving her partially paralysed. Leah faces at least a year of chemotherapy and requires extensive physical and cognitive therapy. She will require special care for years to come. Medical expenses for Leah’s ongoing treatment will exceed 2 million dollars. Leah father Michael was a prominent Tarbert footballer from a young age to senior level until immigrating to New York in 1997. Michael won numerous under age medals plus a north Kerry championship medal with Tarbert at the age of 17 in 1990 and a County Junior Championship medal in 1995.

Michael’s father (Leah’s grandfather) is from a prominent Tarbert GAA family, runs a local pub and owned the greyhound; Joyful Tidings who won the Irish Derby in 1994. To help alleviate the costs friends of the family in New York decided to set up a fund through various events and they have set a target of 250,000 dollars. This group is spearheaded by a strong north Kerry band of Michael’s friends. Leah’s mother who is from Straban, Tyrone has also received huge support from Tyrone GAA and the people of Straban. They even managed to get some Tyrone players to wear wrist bans at the All-Ireland semi final plus her profile and fund raising appeal appeared at half time during the match. The Tarbert community set up a committee spearheaded by Breda Lavery and her daughter Laura and the first meeting was attended by over fifty people. It was decided then a video race night be held to defray medical costs and to ensure Leah continues to receive the care she needs. This will be held in Carmody’s Bar, Tarbert on Friday October 2nd. The response from the Tarbert community and further afield has been extraordinary and the target of raising a massive 50,000 euro is within sight.

COISTE NA NOG This was a very busy week for most teams with a lot at stake. Blitzes were the order of the week and the Ballyduff teams took home more than their share of silverware. Starting at Under-8 level, the usual big squad turned up in John Mitchell’s GAA Club on Saturday morning for the end of season Tralee Parnells hurling blitz. They produced a pair of terrific performances to win their first two matches well, only falling in the last match. The first half of each match was ground hurling only. After halftime, players were allowed to lift and strike the ball from their hands. The Ballyduff team impressed in both skills and did their coaches proud. The Under-10s arrived immediately after the Under-8s blitz ended to participate in their own end of season event. They also had a good day, finishing joint winners. Again, special credit is due to the training team who have brought these players so far this summer. Well done to all and we look forward to seeing as many of these players as possible advancing through the age groups in the coming years. The Christy Ring Cup, which made an appearance at the blitz, is just one of the possibilities that lay before some these players. Moving up to Under-13 level, the footballers were busy with the Feile na Gael Regional Blitz in Coolard on Saturday. Wins over Knock/Brosna, Beale and Listowel saw them through to the “A” final on the Sunday in Tarbert. After an intense tussle against Ennistymon of Clare in perfect conditions, the boys in Green eventually ran out comfortable winners. The thrilling win bodes well for next season’s main Feile competition. Meanwhile, the Under-14 hurlers captured the Mike Hennessy Memorial Cup in Friday’s final with a win over Abbeydorney in Causeway. Congrats to the team and mentors, and thanks for the well-deserved parade through the village afterwards! Finally, the Under-16 hurlers joined the younger teams by playing their own blitz in John-Mitchell’s on Saturday. After an early victory against Tralee Parnells, they were eventually overtaken by Abbeydorney in their final game. Well done on a great season!

BEREVEMENT The whole community was shocked and saddened on learning of the passing of the late Tom O’Sullivan R.I.P. of Ahanagran who passed peacefully at his residence in the company of his family on Tuesday morning last 22nd September. Tom was a gentleman to his finger tips and this was truly reflected in the large crowds that visited the family home where his body lay in repose from Tuesday until Thursday evening of last week and again at Requiem mass on Friday morning last. Born and reared in Carrigane, Littor, Asdee, Tom enjoyed a great life in which he worked hard from a young age, and having met the love of his life the late Nell (nee Enright) R.I.P. they settled down a reared a wonderful family of six children. Like everybody, both Tom & Nell witnessed all the ups and downs of life especially during those years in which work and jobs were very scarce in rural Ireland. Being the backbone of the staff at Hanrahan’s Bakery & Confectionary in Ballylongford, Tom made numerous friends through his daily work travelling all of North Kerry and West Limerick for most of his life. He was a very patient and attentive man never too busy to enjoy the company of young or old whether they be family, friends or people that he had just met for the first time. His leisurely interests included many hobbies, he loved the outdoor life and particularly loved the water and fishing for salmon during the summer when fishing was then allowed on the Shannon Estuary. He enjoyed working with young people and helping them in various activities, and encouraging them get a good start in life which he demonstrated so successfully as a very successful and very influential part of the very successful “Bally Youth Club” in the early 70’s where he was a highly respected member of the parents committee at that time. He was a deeply religious man, practicing his faith at the local St Michael’s Church where he also helped with collections and other activities. He was a wonderful family man and was very proud of each of his children their families and his, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who all dearly adored him, to his grieving family daughter Ann, sons Jimmy, Michael, Tommy, Seán and Donal, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, nephew, grandchildren, great-granchildren, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathies. Tom’s remains were wakened at his residence at Ahanagran, on Thursday last between 3pm and 7pm followed by removal to St Michael's Church, Ballylongford. Requiem Mass took place on Friday morning at 11am with Funeral immediately afterwards to Lislaughtin Abbey. Family flowers only please. May he Rest In Peace. ASDEE ROVERS NEW SEASON Asdee Rovers are still looking for one or two key players in certain positions between the age of 6 and 15 and want to play soccer. The fee for the season is only €60 per player with academy players only paying €25 the cheapest in North Kerry. Training takes place on Saturday morning’s at10.30am finishing at 12 noon in Asdee. BOOK OF THE WEEK in association with

Woulfes Bookshop Listowel’s Only Dedicated Bookshop Church St, Listowel - T. 068 21021

www.woulfesbookshop.ie // follow us on facebook

A SLANTING OF THE SUN by Donal Ryan An old man looks into the fearful eyes of a burglar left to guard him while his brother is beaten; an Irish priest in a war-torn Syrian town teaches its young men the art of hurling; the driver of a car which crashed, killing a teenage girl, forges a connection with the girl’s mother; a squad of broken friends assemble to take revenge on a rapist; a young man sets off on his morning run, reflecting on the ruins of his relationship, but all is not as it seems.

Donal Ryan’s short stories pick up where his acclaimed novels The Spinning Heart and The Thing About December left off, dealing with the human cost of loneliness, isolation and displacement. Sometimes this is present in the ordinary, the mundane; sometimes it is triggered by a fateful encounter or a tragic decision. At the heart of these stories, crucially, is how people are drawn to each other and cling on to love, often in desperate circumstances. In haunting and often startling prose, Donal Ryan has captured the brutal beauty of the human heart in all its hopes and failings.

The game ended all-square when Beale Seniors took on Keel in the County League, Division 3, on Saturday evening. Little separated the teams in the first half and we went into the interval, just one point adrift, Beale 1-3, Keel 0-7. We hit a purple patch on the changeover with good defensive work and we tagged on four points without reply. In the third quarter, we had stretched our lead by 1-9 to 0-8 and the all-important win that we needed seemed within our grasp. But our opponents nipped away at our lead and, as we seemed to tire, it was their turn to score four points without a Beale answer. As the clock ticked, a nail biting finish saw the teams end up level: Beale 1-9, Keel 0-12. We were unlucky in front of goal in the second half when two goals chances were well saved. Beale team: Dermott Cummins, Colm Kissane, Neilus Mulvihill, Killian Walsh-O’Boyle, Andy O’Connell, Paul Collins, Dan Ellis (0-1), Jeremy King (0-1), Philly Blake, Ian Mannix, James McMahon (01), Ger O’Gorman (0-2(2f)), Darragh Buckley (0-4(4f)), Tom Joy, Barry O’Mahony (1-0). Substitutes: Johnny O’Sullivan for Andy O’Connell (injured), Shane Hanrahan for Ian Mannix, Jamie Culloty for Tom Joy. Third from the bottom of the table, we are in the relegation zone, going into our final game, against St Patrick’s, Blennerville. All to be played for, with a win here giving us a possibility of a play-off. Date yet to be confirmed. All roads lead to Ballyduff on Saturday for the long-awaited replay of the final of the County Minor League. Beale take on St Pat’s, Blennerville at 2 o’clock. It’s almost five months since the teams ended up all-square on seven points apiece in Ballyduff. Both teams served up some great football that evening despite adverse playing conditions. Regrettably Beale will be without injured Kerry Minor, Cormac Linane, who had a great game the last day.

Beale Seniors begin their quest to defend their North Kerry championship title when they play Ballyduff in the first round of the Bernard O’Callaghan Senior Football Championship 2015, a repeat of last year’s semi-final. Beale

contest the quarter final of the North Kerry Under-21 Championship against Knocknagoshel/Brosna in Ballybunion. Date to be confirmed. In the Junior Championship, Beale have received a first-round bye.

Shannon Rangers Seniors play Rathmore in round 3 of the County Senior Championship on Saturday in Tarbert.at 5 o’clock. Beale will be represented by Seán Dee, Jeremy King, tom Joy and Ger O'Gornman. Shannon Rangers Minors contest the semi-final of the County Championship against Dingle; while Dr Crokes and Mid-Kerry are the other semi-finalists. Beale players in the squad include Darragh Buckley, Killian Walsh-O’Boyle and Johnny O’Sulllivan.

Beale GAA are preparing for our annual Christmas social event. This year, instead of the White Collar Boxing, which proved a tremendous success for the past two years, we are planning to host Strictly Come Dancing. Anyone interested in competing, contact us as soon as possible.

ASDEE GAA

COUNTY LEAGUE. Asdee 3-7 Knocknagoshel 2-14. Whatever aspirations Asdee had of at least getting a play off for promotion ended at Willie Walsh Park, Knocknagoshel on Saturday evening last where the home side yet again proved to be their bogey team. Certainly the contribution of the Walsh brothers proved to be a major obstable to the visitors chances of victory as all 3 played major roles in their sides win with James 4pts and Edmond adding 6pts of their sides tally. It was obvious early on that Knock looked much sharper but Asdee will rue the many scoring opportunities that were squandered plus some woyful defending at times that saw some easy scores recorded by Knock even though the visitors led after 5mts with points coming from Cyril Dineen and Mike Breen with James Walsh firing over the opening score of the game. Further points from Edmond Walsh and a gift of a goal coming from David Cahill saw Knock ahead 1-4 to 0-2 after 12mts. Points were exchanged by Mike Breen and Noel Long for Asdee while James Walsh replied for Knock. However Asdee finished the half in style with the outstanding Noel Long and Mike Breen finding the net to leave the half time score; Asdee 2-4 Knock 1-5. On resumption Kieran Long cut the deficit to a single point inside the first minute but 4mts later a sweeping run from his half back position Kieran Kelly fed Cyril Dineen and he finished to the net in some style. Asdee 3-4 Knock 1-6. However Knock stuck in there and Edmond Walsh,2pts and Kieran Long 1pt saw the home side hit the front again by the 10th minute. Still Asdee dug deep and points from Eoin Kennedy and Sean Keane levelled up the tie as we approached the three quarter stage. Asdee 3-6 Knock 2-9. However this was as good as it got for Asdee as Knock took over with Noel Long adding his sides final point in the 21st minute and Edmond and James Walsh adding 2 a piece and Darragh O Connell had Knock well clear at the final whistle. For Asdee Darragh Keane, Kieran Kelly, Eoin O Carroll, Con Carmody, Noel Long, Cyril Dineen, Sean Keane and Martin Collins until injury ruled him out for the second half impressed. Overall a very successful County League campaign. Team; Conor Coughlan, Con Carmody, Martin Collins, Eoin O Carroll, Kieran Kelly, Sean Keane, 1pt,Noel Long, 1-2, John Doran, Padraig Ruddle, Mike Breen, 1-2, Eoin Kennedy, 1pt, Michael Walsh, Eoin Tydings, Cyril Dineen, 1-1, Darragh Keane. Senior County League. Ballylongford 3-12 Austin Stacks B 3-12. Ballylongford collected a point in the penultimate round of the County League at Connolly Park Tralee. With two youthful teams lining out both sides played open attacking football with plenty of scores in perfect conditions. While playing against the wind it was Ciaran O'Connor who opened the scoring when he palmed over from close range in the first minute, Austin Stacks were soon into their rhythm and Brendan Caball fired over three quick points by the 6th minute.Thomas Doherty added a point before Ciaran O'Connor stepped up to take the first of his four penalties awarded to the visitors but Paddy Fitzgibbon was equal to his shot with a fine save. Joe McCarthy and Ciaran O'Connor added further points while Stacks were always keeping their noses in front with Brendan Caball and Shane Crowley finding the target.Ciaran O'Connor made no mistake with his second penalty which brought the sides level.Stack finished out the half better and Louie Ryle found the net after a good run just before the break. Half time score: Austin Stacks 1-8 Ballylongford 1-6.

David Culhane opened the scoring with two long range points in the opening minutes. Ciaran O'Connor and Paddy Fitzgibbon faced each other once again in the 4th minute for penalty number three with the goalkeeper bringing off another fine save Michael Lynch was on hand to salvage a point from the rebound.Ciaran once again made no mistake five minutes later driving his shot to the top corner to put Ballylongford into a three point lead a lead that was short lived as Brendan Caball added to his tally with a goal after a good passing move. Both sides exchanged points for the next quarter before a grandstand finish Ciaran O'Connor took pass from Joe McCarthy and shot to the net from close range in the 25th minute and once again Stacks hit back a minute later when full forward Sean Dukes made no mistake from the penalty spot despite the best efforts of Jake Lavery.David Culhane put Ballylongford back in front with a point in the 27th minute however Stacks Calvin Foley levelled the match a minute later. Both sides had an opportunity for the winner but a draw was a fair result on the day. Referee Eddie Barrett. Senior County Championship Shannon Rangers v Rathmore Saturday 3rd 5pm in Tarbert.

CROTTA HURLING CLUB

County U16 Hurling Final: Crotta O’Neills 1-16 South Kerry 1-16 This was meant to be the last game of the competition, but after a thrill-aminute rollercoaster, two brilliant teams were deadlocked and have to do it all again – for which any enthralled neutrals will be grateful. This was superb hurling all through, clean, tough, and loads of skill. South Kerry made a great start and went up by five points through Shane Kennedy and a brace from the outstanding Donal O’Sullivan ((1f) and Michael McCarthy. John Quilter fed Donal Hunt for a goal chance for Crotta, but Richard O’Sullivan made a great save. They were in real trouble at this stage, losing key battles all over the field, but bringing Barry O’Mahony out to midfield proved an absolute masterstroke and he gave a phenomenal display in the thick of the action. He had two points (1f) and Adam O’Sullivan had another before Barry’s long puck evaded everybody in acrowded square and hit the net to put Crotta ahead 1-3 to 0-5. Donal O’Sullivan and Barry O’Mahony swapped three points each at either end before O’Mahony with another two and Donal Hunt fired over to give Crotta a 1-9 to 0-8 half-time lead. Adam O’Sullivan stretched Crotta’s lead on the restart but ever-reliable Donal O’Sullivan slotted a free in reply, with Barry O’Mahony responding in kind. South Kerry got the fillip of a goal through a long ball straight to the net by Gearoid Fennessy and Donal O’Sullivan added a point to suddenly make it a one point game. If Barry O’Mahony calmed a few Crotta nerves, they were quickling jangling again when Donal O’Sullivan hit two for South Kerry, and there was a huge roar when Dan McCarthy brought them level. Scores flowed in quick succession. Barry O’Mahony from play. Donal O’Sullivan with a free. Extra time. The intensity took its toll on tired bodies in extra-time. John Quilter and Barry O’Mahony nudged Crotta O’Neills two ahead. Donal O’Sullivan pulled one back. Second half of extra-time. Donal O’Sullivan with a free. Level again. Daniel Casey made a great burst for goal but Aodhan Behan somehow managed to save it. Final whistle. All to do again….and it should be a fantastic spectacle. Crotta O’Neills: Aodhan Behan, Daniel Sheehan, Brian O’Connell, Darragh Behan, Dominic Nolan, Eamon Rohan, Ryan McElligott, Micheal Kennedy, Jeaic Kennedy, Adam O’Sullivan (0-2), John Quilter (0-1), Darragh O’Donoghue, Donal Hunt (0-1), Barry O’Mahony (1-12, 9f), James Sheehan.
