NORTH KERRY & LISTOWEL LADY NÓRA RELIHAN AWARDED KERRY ASSOCIATION IN DUBLIN ARTS AWARD

Nóra Relihan has been chosen by the Kerry Association in Dublin as the 2023 recipient of the Kerry Association in Dublin Arts Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Arts.

Nóra was an actor with Listowel Drama Group and Listowel Players, a Director, Adjudicator, Entertainer, Broadcaster, Writer, Nurse, Social Worker, Co-founder of the Listowel Players in 1959, Writers Week in 1971 and St John’s Theatre and Arts Centre in 1987. Member of the Arts Council and was accorded a Civic Reception in Listowel in 2008 in recognition of her prestigious contribution to the Arts.

Born in Abbeyfeale in 1929, Nóra Ryle, as she was then known, was educated at Killorglin National School, Presentation Convent Milltown and Presentation Convent, Hospital, Co. Limerick. Nóra was nurtured and encouraged by her exposure to theatre while a student nurse in Guy’s Hospital in London. While there she seized every opportunity to attend and watch plays, operas and musicals. She settled in Listowel in 1952 and there later married Michael Relihan.

It was the late Eamon Kelly who was a woodwork teacher in Listowel, and very involved with Listowel Drama Group with his late friend Bryan MacMahon, who first put Nóra on stage. Nóra became friends with John B. Keane when she returned from London. In 1958 John B saw Nóra’s prize-winning production of Joseph Tomelty’s play “All Souls Night”. According to Nóra, he was not greatly impressed, and he told her he was going to write a play himself. John Bs first play - SIVE - emerged. Nóra was cast as Mena Galvin, in her first character part, and Mena was part of her life until the early 1980’s. The play opened in February 1958 at Walsh’s Ballroom in Listowel. Drama festival after drama festival brought major awards, ending triumphantly with All Ireland honours in Athlone, and the highest recognition of all from the Abbey Theatre. Listowel Drama Group were invited to present SIVE in the Abbey Theatre in May 1959, an invitation that was extended before the All-Ireland final. In late 1959 Nóra joined a professional company, which included the late Eamon Keane and J.G. Devlin, for a short season in the Grand Opera House, Belfast. Very shortly after that Nóra, with John B. Keane, founded the Listowel Players and chose SIVE as their first production. A great many of the original cast played their original parts plus John B. himself and his late brother, Eamon.

Ernest Blythe then expressed an interest in Nóra joining the Abbey Theatre Players, but a very small girl in Listowel won that contest and they finished their season at the Wexford Opera Festival. For years afterwards Nóra applied herself to many acting roles with Listowel Players, as well as being producer and stage manager at various times. It is interesting to note that in 1966 when she was involved in O’Casey’s “The Plough and the Stars”, commemorating the 1916 Rising she contacted Gerry Fitt, of the SDLP, from West Belfast, who acceded to her request that his own flag “The Plough and the Stars” be on stage each night in the Sluagh Hall in Listowel during her performances of the play there.

Nóra herself delighted in location drama. Two of these location dramas are particularly memorable - one depicting the work of Maurice Walsh and the other “The Colleen Bawn” in Glin in 1973, with Nóra playing the role of Ellen Walsh.

The existence of St John’s Theatre and Arts Centre, and its outstanding contribution to the Arts in Listowel for over thirty years is due in no small measure to the vision, courage and single-mindedness of Nóra. A meeting of Listowel Urban District Council was convened by the Chairman, Robert Pierce, who proposed that an ad-hoc Committee be set up to decide what would be done with St John’s and that Nóra be Chairman of the Committee. St John’s Founding Committee was established in 1987 under Nóra’s Chairmanship.

At this stage Nóra was recognised throughout Ireland and further afield as a woman of extraordinary ability, immense creativity, single minded vision and great courage. These artistic and personal qualities resulted in her being invited to become a member of the Arts Council. She used this position with discretion and wisdom to further her ambitions for St John’s.

The book “North Kerry, the Magic and Legend”, co-written by Nóra and Padraig O Concubhair, and illustrated with Olive Stacks unique original paintings was published in 2006. It gives the reader a unique perspective into the many facets of the landscape and environs of North Kerry.

Nóra had a varied career throughout her lifetime with solo tours, drama, TV, and film appearances, including “Fair City” and TG4 film “Limbo”. Her one woman show “Cúirt an Mhéan Óiche” was first produced by Stephen Holland and Barry Cassin later produced it in 1991 for Writers Week in Listowel.

Many tributes have been paid to Nóra over the years. One that is especially dear to her was a civic reception accorded to her on 31st August 2008 in Listowel. On that night a lifetime of acting excellence bringing great renown to drama in Listowel was celebrated in her honour. To top it all Nóra also worked as a social worker for the blind for 30 years.

In accepting the award Nóra Relihan said:

“I am delighted and honoured to receive this award from the Kerry Association; it is a really lovely tribute to my interest and work in the arts over many decades:.

CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS

CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY

Welcome to my weekly column. My name is Caroline and as a certified DóTERRA essential oil specialist I have been delighted to help, guide and support so many people along with their friends and families throughout North Kerry and West Limerick over the last three years on their essential oil journey. I know how these Oils can support the Body, the Mind and the Mood and each week I’ll be sharing lots of tips and information on Self-Care, Wellness, Love and Gratitude when using your DóTerra essential oils as part of your every day routine.

Make The Change – Use DóTERRA!

After recently returning from a very inspirational and educational essential oil journey in Lisbon, Portugal, it is now my duty to share with you some simple uses for using DóTERRAS essential oils in your daily routine to live a life of wellness.

If you have never used these essential oils before, continue reading my weekly column, check out my social media pages and contact me on the number below to educate yourself on how best to get the most benefits from these oils. When you start introducing the oils by using and diffusing daily in your home space / work environment, you and your family will see the benefits and the difference in your life for better health and vitality.

Three things you can use dóTerras essential oils for:

• Number 1 - Sleep.

If you are having difficulty getting to sleep, staying a sleep or perhaps not getting a restful night’s sleep, waking up during the night, tossing and turning and then waking up in the morning feeling tired and having low energy, these essential oils can help you.

• Number 2 – Stress & Anxiety

If you are feeling stressed and or experiencing anxious feelings, using dóTerras essential oils can help you feel calm and relaxed, ground and maintain your energy while keeping your mind and body calm and focused in that stressful moment.

• Number 3 – Immune Support

If you are feeling poorly or out of sorts, using, diffusing and taking dóTerras essential oils are a really good way to boost and support the immune system naturally.

DóTERRA knows that essential oils must be pure and potent in order to best fulfill the needs of those that use them. Too often, essential oils available for purchase contain contaminants and filler substances that weaken the essential oil’s effectiveness.

With the sole purpose to provide pure and potent essential oils, doTERRA ensures that their oils are free of harmful contaminants and fillers through the CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade™ protocol. Therefore this allows us to ingest these oils and use them in our foods and beverages as they come directly from plants and work with our bodies on a cellular level.

My Three Way Method Using DóTerras Oils:

Topically: Apply the oils onto your skin particularly on the pulse points and soles of the feet.

Aromatically: Place two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffuse the oils around your home, classroom, office space or other places of work and business.

Internally: Add the oils into your favourite foods, waters and beverages, or simply take one drop daily under the tongue to support your body and mind.

Check out my Social Media pages for my Free upcoming In-Person and Online essential oil Classes. For private Oil Consultations and Wellness Work Talks please contact me on the number below as pre-booking is now essential.

*Anyone who purchases dóTERRAS essential oils from Carolines Pod of Positivity will have full support and guidance on how best to use the oils through a private WhatsApp group and Social Media Group Page.

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well I’m sure you are familiar with the saying “If the cap fits wear it”.

Well, that’s all fine and dandy if we were only talking about a cap,. But what we want to think about this week is how can our clothes in our wardrobes help to keep our motivation strong and our weight loss and wellness journey going.

Change of Season

This is now the time of the year, and more so with the change of season, we are having to maybe sort out our wardrobe and change around the clothes that are in there at the moment. For example, are there clothes in there that are too heavy, too dark, too wintery, too BIG, too SMALL or maybe just not quite fitting you right yet etc? Think about it......

How often do we look in the wardrobe and say “I’ve nothing to wear”

Now that normality has resumed and we are all making plans to go places. Whether its meeting friends and having a meal out or maybe a night away , we all want to look and feel our best. Its great to now have an opportunity to get dressed up and we all have the clothes in the wardrobe that we haven’t had a chance to wear in a while.

Carrot V Stick

Clothes are something that can help us to keep our weight loss going. A bit like the carrot and the stick.

The CARROT being to get DOWN to a smaller size, and the STICK being not having to go UP to the bigger size. We are all guilty of hoarding and holding on to stuff, so take out the clothes that are too big for you and get rid of them, otherwise you will only be thinking sure I will always find something to fit if I gain weight again, so our advice would be to get RID, RID, RID

The type of clothes you wear can help or hinder your Weight loss .It’s usually your clothes that’ll be the first thing you notice as you start losing or gaining weight.

Avoid wearing elasticated waistbands ALL of the time, because they grow with you while an item of clothing with a waistband will always give you the pinch or the credit when it’s due.

Next, take a look at what’s not quite fitting right yet, and keep those where you will see them. That would remind you every time you open the wardrobe of what you want to achieve. The most important thing is that we should feel good in the clothes that we “ want “ to wear, and not just “ have “ to wear something because we have no choice and it will have to do.. Decluttering the wardrobe is like de-cluttering the mind, and that has to be good for our overall well being too.

Think Ahead

Upcoming events can be a great motivator for us to keep us inspired on how we want to look and feel when we are dressed up. After all when you feel good about yourself on the inside,no matter what you wear it will sparkle through on the outside.

So, now we hope you will be busy sorting out the wardrobe over the week, but think about the satisfaction you will get every time you open the doors, knowing that you can put your hand on anything and every thing you love.

We at San Rita Wellness would often encourage our members to look beyond the number on the scales and focus on their changing body shape. Clothes are really a great indicator of the progress our members are seeing and feeling and also are a great motivator.

We will leave you with a thought…

“Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels”

WAVEWALKER

By

The incredible true-story of a Sunday Times bestselling author’s fight for freedom and education

Aged just seven, Suzanne Heywood set sail with her parents and brother on a three-year voyage around the world. What followed turned instead into a decade-long way of life, through storms, shipwrecks, reefs and isolation, with little formal schooling. No one else knew where they were most of the time and no state showed any interest in what was happening to the children.

Suzanne fought her parents, longing to return to England and to education and stability. This memoir covers her astonishing upbringing, a survival story of a child deprived of safety, friendships, schooling and occasionally drinking water… At seventeen Suzanne earned an interview at Oxford University and returned to the UK.

From the bestselling author of What Does Jeremy Think?, Wavewalker is the incredible true story of how the adventure of a lifetime became one child’s worst nightmare – and how her determination to educate herself enabled her to escape

GOODBYE

Last week we said goodbye to another of our Kilbaha senior citizens. Paudie Hanrahan. Paudie got a send off befitting the gentleman he was, a respected member of the parish of Moyvane, life long member of Moyvane GAA club, having served first as a player, later as an official of the club and President of the club at the time of his passing. He was a stalwart at corner back during Moyvane’s golden era of the 1980’s, along with his many brothers. Their service to Moyvane football is still talked about by those who are old enough to remember. Paudie was a quiet man who loved travelling to watch his beloved Kerry all over Ireland. Even in the last few months of his life he watched all the GAA games and enjoyed discussing them with anyone who came to visit. He was well taken care of by his family and members of the medical profession which allowed him to remain at home until his passing. Sincere sympathy to his wife, Eileen, daughters, Julienne & Sinead, son, Patrick, his grandchildren, great-granddaughter, brothers, sister and his many family members. He will be missed.

Leo Varadker, Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport announced a €7 restoration fund. Killarney House was reopened to the public on April 03, 2016. The house and grounds are well worth a visit. Training continues at Lixnaw astro pitch Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm. Anyone interested in playing football at this age are very welcome to make contact with a club officer for more information. Please follow us on social media for updates.

MEMBERSHIP is overdue by all members old and new for 2023. Please reach out to your respective manager, if on a team. Thank you for your continued support, it is greatly appreciated by the club.

CÚL CAMP: The Camp is open for booking now - all bookings must be done online only. As usual, there is the option to purchase the gear also. Our Finuge camp will be held week July 31st - August 4th. This is always a great week of serious fun so keep an eye out for booking details which we should have in the weeks ahead.

SCHOOLS SKILLS: The North Kerry finals were held last week in Duagh GAA grounds and we had representatives involved from three different schools. From Scoil Mhuire De Lourdes Lixnaw we had Darragh Gilbert, Ruairí O’Brien and Ger Roche. Killocrim National School saw Joe Joy carry the Finuge flag, while Dromclough National School had Corey Heaphy on its team. Dromclough went on to win the team event with Mikey Somers of St Senans winning the individual prize. Well done to all involved and best of luck to Corey and his Dromclough skills team who now go on to represent North Kerry in the county finals.

FINUGE GAA

PITCH DEVELOPMENT: The pitch remains closed following the recent work carried out by Allman Contractors which included sanding, drainage, seeding and fertilising. This work is also part of the overall facility improvements the club have embarked upon following the successful major fundraiser last year. The pitch remains closed for the duration of this week.

SENIOR: This week was a rest week for the senior team. The last game away against Lispole saw a defeat for the team. This has Finuge second in the table, two points behind Lispole, however the leaders still have a game in hand! This weekend see’s the team play Moyvane in an important game - a win keeps Finuge in a strong second place and firmly in line for promotion to the cup competition. The game is set to be played Sunday in Finuge - throw in timeTBC.

MINORS: The North Kerry league action kicked off last week and the team were in action against Knock/Brosna. This was a close fought affair with K/B coming out on top on the scoreline Finuge 2-13, K/B 5-05 with the game played in Clounmacon. Next up is St Senans this Monday night being played in Mountcoal at 7pm.

U15: It has been a busy few weeks for the team! Having qualified for the county league semi-finals after finishing on top of division 3A, the teams focused switched to Féile last weekend. The team were drawn in a tough group within division two, and so it proved to be the case. On Friday evening the boys played Chruchill and Ballymacelligott with the games hosted by Churchill. Unfortunately both games finished in defeat and saw the team exit at the group stage. Chruchill would go on to eventually win out division two and we wish them the best of luck representing Kerry in the Munster tournament. There is no rest for the lads though as the action now switches back to the county league semi-final, with the game against Duagh going ahead this Wednesday the 10th at Mountcoal. Best of luck to the team and management!

U13: The last action of phase one of the county league saw the team travel to An Ghaeltacht. The home team ultimately came out on top following an open and entertaining game which saw the team’s level at halftime. This left the team mid table after two wins and three defeats in a competitive division three! At time of writing, we still await details of phase two which is scheduled to commence this Sunday the 14th of May.

U11: With a recent bye followed by a postponed game with Brosna, the team have not played the past two weeks but are busy training and getting ready for phase two of the county Go Games series in the weeks ahead.

U9: Next action for the team is a game with Clounmacon, scheduled for this week. Best of luck to the team!

U7: Our U7s were in action recently in a GDA organised blitz, hosted by St Senans. It was great to see our youngest troopers take to the grass - well done to all the boys and girls who lined out and no doubt they are looking forward to a summer of action ahead! The first of the Go Games series commence for the U7s next week when our super troopers travel to Tarbert on Wednesday the 17th of May for a 6:45pm start! The best of luck to all our boys and girls

U10 COMMUNITY GAMES: The U10 Lixnaw community games team were in action recently and done really well. The won their qualifying games against Castleisland, Ballydonoghue and Kilcummin. They came up against a strong Caherciveen team who ultimately went on to win the competition. In the 3rd/4th playoff they team played Annascaul/Lispole/Camp and came away with the 4th place Pewter medal. Well done to everyone involved in progressing through a very tough competition!

KERRY U20: Its was a case of hard luck for the team and Kieran MacKessy who played Sligo on Saturday in the All-Ireland semi-final. The team never really go going despite a bright start, and Sligo gradually ground out the win in a low scoring affair. This brings the curtain down on the U20 intercounty season for Kerry and while they won Munster, the group will surely wonder what could have been. Well done to Kieran who was excellent throughout and has a bright future ahead.

KERRY SENIORS: The Kerry senior team put in an impressive display last Sunday to land the 84th Munster title for the county. Our own Jimmy Galvin continues in his role as physio and we wish the entire squad and management continued success for the year ahead. Next up is a big game against Mayo which is fixed for Killarney the weekend of May 20th /21st - TBC at time of writing.

KERRY CAMOIGE: Well done to the Kerry minor camoige team on winning the C All Ireland last weekend with a special mention to joint captain Emma Conway, Shannon Collins and Leonie Waltz!

SYMPATHY: Finuge GAA Club wishes to extend its condolences to the Clifford family of Fossa following the passing of Ellen. Her two boys played a massive role for Kerry in last Sundays Munster final despite losing their mother only 24 hours earlier. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

FITTEST FAMILY: Irelands Fittest Family 2023 are currently taking applications for any fit families out there. The deadline is the 31st of May, with filming from July-September.

County Minor

Congratulations to Asdees Oisin Healy of Tullahinell who has been selected on the County Minor Football panel for 2023. No doubt Oisin has a truly magnificent football talent and certainly made a name for himself last year having been one of the top players that won County Minor Championship with North Kerry. Certainly, Asdee have contributed several Minors to the Kerry panel down through the years; namely; Paud O Donoghue, Johnny Ryan, Dan Kissane Sheehy, John Kennedy. Our last Kerry Minor Footballer representative was in 2007 with Eoin Kennedy who won a Munster Minor medal the previous year in 2006. So Oisin makes up the 16-year gap of being a Kerry minor Footballer from Asdee. However, Oisin didn’t save all his skills for gaelic football as he was just as skilful with the caman. Played all his underage hurling with Ballyduff and having plenty success along the way. Minor County Championship finals winning in 2021 and going down in the final in 2022. His Underage football was with Northern Gaels. Oisin is the type of player that could play in most positions but attack is where he has excelled. Kerry minors play their opening game in the Electric Ireland Munster Championship on this Thursday May 11th at 7pm in Pairc Ui Chaoimh and we wish Oisin and his teammates and backroom staff the best of luck.

MEANING OF LIFE

“Listen, l’m really pleased for you but count me out! Why would l want to spend more time with someone who is always disappointed in me ? I just feel l’m never good enough for Him....I want nourishment not punishment .... .... “

The above response typifies many who have a wrong understanding of who God really is. I had recently mentioned to a friend that our home prayer groups are spending time each week going through a course called Freedom in Christ. I chatted about last week’s session which dealt with who God really is and who He most definitely is not. Our conversation got me thinking.

Before l accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour of my life l thought I knew exactly what God was like, and who He really was. l too believed that in His eyes l was a useless, worthless, inadequate wretch and therefore He had zero interest in me as a person.

I WAS SO WRONG.

And l know that many, many more people also get it wrong and are missing out big time on the real relationship that God wants us to have with Him.

You see, it’s a simple as this..... if l have the wrong idea of who God really and truly is, then my faith is based a false understanding of who He really is. Many of us have heard and believed things about His character that are totally untrue. And these untruths have crippled our relationship with Him.

But it’s never too late to find the truth. Scripture is the truth about God’s love for us and His desire for a

real relationship with us.

Here is one verse from the book of Revelation Chapter 3:20

“Behold. I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My Voice and opens the door, l will come into him and abide with him and he with Me.”

From cover to cover the bible is the true story of God’s love for us. It’s so incredible to finally know that I am fully accepted by God and I know with certainty that He “delights in me and rejoices over me with singing”, that “He knows the number of hairs on my head and is always thinking of me.” Luke 12:7. l know all of this, not because l deserve His love or special attention or because l am a good person but because of what Christ has done for me. His death has given me and you, if you accept it, the gift of new spiritual life.

In the Gospel of John 3:16 it is written “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

So the question is... who am l going to believe? Myself and my own feelings? Other people’s faulty reasoning? Or the One, True and Living God?
