LISTOWEL TIDY TOWNS

Listowel Tidy Towns group were absolutely delighted with the response they received with their annual clean-up week and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for turning up on the designated evenings and showing care and respect for the area and environment that we live in. Team spirit for Cleanup week was buzzing and a very special acknowledgement must go out to the young people who turned up with such determination and comradery.

A special thank you to our sponsors Fitzgerald Tyres and Garveys SuperValu for their welcomed refreshments to the participants.

This however was only the tip of the iceberg when it comes down to the work of the Tidy Towns and they are appealing for your continued support and manpower as they reintroduce their regular Tuesday and Thursday evening cleanups, gathering at St. Johns in the Square at 7pm.

If these arrangements don’t suit you or your household don’t fret, why not designate a time that suits you in your area and do your own pickup. Its all about taking pride and having respect for the environment and where we live.

GROUP TO WALK PART OF THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO, SUPPORTING BEREAVED PARENTS

This May, a wonderful group from all over the Island of Ireland will travel to Spain and walk part of the Camino de Santiago, raising funds for the support Anam Cara offer bereaved parents.

The group will be abroad for a week, walking from sunrise to sunset for 6 days. The route will take them across woodlands, farmland, and rustic hamlets, following tracks and paths lined by granite stone walls. The green rolling landscape of Galicia is part of each day’s walk, until they approach the mythical city of Santiago de Compostela. Each will receive their ‘Compostela’ certificate and explore the magic of Santiago’s Old Town. The group will be accompanied by Anam Cara Chairman, Tony Mahon and Fundraising Manager, Jamie Conway. We wish them the very best of luck.

On Tuesday 9th May, Anam Cara will hold their Kerry meeting in The Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee at 7:15pm. All bereaved parents are welcome, regardless of the age of the child or circumstances of death. Any bereaved parent in the Kerry area and surrounds are welcome to attend.

For further information, Anam Cara can be contacted on 085 2888888 or by email info@anamcara.ie

CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS

CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY

Welcome to my weekly column. My name is Caroline and as a certified DóTERRA essential oil specialist I have been delighted to help, guide and support so many people along with their friends and families throughout North Kerry and West Limerick over the last three years on their essential oil journey. I know how the Oils can support the Body, the Mind and the Mood and each week I’ll be sharing lots of tips and information on Self-Care, Wellness, Love and Gratitude when using your DóTerras essential oils as part of your every day routine.

Meet Your New Best Friend!

This week I want to share with you one of my personal favourites in the dóTERRA essential oil range that helps supports teenagers and women during their monthly cycle and has become a best friend to many of us in hormone balancing, monthly cramps, hormonal head tension, hot flashes, soothing emotions, mood swings and much more.

ClaryCalm was designed by the dóTerra specialists to provide a calming, soothing effect during the course of a woman’s menstrual cycle. As heightened emotions are commonly part of a woman’s menstrual cycle, the calming aroma of ClaryCalm can soothe and balance these emotions when it’s applied topically to the wrist points, behind the ears and the back of the neck. It is also the perfect companion in times of discomfort so it’s one I recommend in using over the abdomen area each morning or carry with you to use over the course of the day when needed most. Here are some of the oils put together to bring you your new best friend: Clary Sage Flower, Lavender Flower, Bergamot Peel, Roman Chamomile Flower, Ylang Ylang Flower, Cedarwood Wood, Geranium Plant, Fennel Seed, Carrot Seed, Palmarosa Herb and Vitex Leaf / Berry.

Caroline’s Top Tip – Ways to use your ClaryCalm Roller Bottle.

• During your menstrual cycle apply to abdomen area to experience a soothing and calming massage

• Apply to the back of the neck and chest area when experiencing hot flashes

• Apply to skin irritations

• Apply to the back of the neck, abdomen and bottoms of feet to help balance the mood throughout the month

• Roll on to your diffuser jewellery or wrist beads

ClaryCalm can be purchased by contacting me on the number below or through my social media pages and retails at €43. I also post nationwide.

You can check out my Facebook page Caroline’s Pod of Positivity for more information on DóTERRAS Essential Oils. Consultations and oil experience group classes can be booked by contacting me on the number below and together we will start you on your journey of health and wellness using the Oils with my full support and guidance.

My Three Way Method Using DóTerras Oils: Topically: Apply the oils onto your skin particularly on the pulse points and soles of the feet. Aromatically: Place two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffuse the oils in your home, classroom, office space, salons or other places of work and business. Internally: Add the oils to your favourite food, waters and drinks, or simply by taking one drop daily under the tongue to support your body and mind.

DóTERRA knows that essential oils must be pure and potent in order to best fulfill the needs of those that use them. Too often, essential oils available for purchase contain contaminants and filler substances that weaken the essential oil’s effectiveness. With the sole purpose to provide pure and potent essential oils, doTERRA ensures that their oils are free of harmful contaminants and fillers through the CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade™ protocol.

We are so fortunate that DōTerra now have a manufacturing plant in Blarney Busi ness Park in County Cork and will be come a household name in Ireland by the year end.

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well

This week we are focusing on your “Table Manners“

Studies show that watching TV or being on a device while eating your meals increases portion sizes and appetites because we are not properly engaged with our food. Eating away from distractions is therefore helpful for weight loss. Even for a person on their own it is also very easy to fall into the trap of distraction for example sitting on the couch in front of the TV with your meal on your lap.

Families eating together has been proven to help children bond with their parents, for example catching up after the day as well as developing healthy eating habits. Now that we are all in a more structured routine, there are probably more of us around the table at the one time now as we are starting the Summer holidays.

BEST LAID PLANS

Let’s say you’ve convinced the family to eat at the table with you, here are some tips on how to lay it for weight loss success.

• Clear any distractions off the table such as newspapers, devices etc

• Make the table look appealing by having a place set for everyone.

• Use nice colourful plates. ( They are no use up on the dresser )

• Have your meal planned in advance so you are really looking forward to it.

TABLE FOR ONE

If you are cooking for one it can be easy to neglect making a proper meal of dinner, so try these ideas to create a positive impact on your weight loss.

• A ready meal can be an easy option, but why not commit to cooking a new simple recipe once a week

• Take the time to cook a large quantity of your favourite meal which you can then freeze in batches, giving you a quick and healthy ready meal for when you’re short on time.

• Try eating at the table instead of on the sofa in front of the TV, even if it’s just occasionally.

So whether you are eating on your own or with the family, being more mindful of what is on your plate and allowing yourself time for your meal, you are more aware of feeling satisfied and are less likely to go back for second helpings.

ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR ONE

Cooking the one type of meal to suit yourself and the rest of the family works well. Any recipe can be adapted to suit everyone in the house, which makes life easier especially for the cook. This time of the year stews, soups and casseroles are ideal as they can be done in the one pot.

To make your meals even more colourful and satisfying include lots of fruit and vegetables which most are calorie free on our “ San Rita Wellness Plan “

“Be aware of your behaviour and savour the flavour“

For extra support and for weekly accountability check us out on Facebook San Rita Wellness or sanritawellness.ie for details of our “In Person Meetings“, “At Home Service“ or our “One to One Service“.

NB - Our weekly “In Person Meetings” take place in the Kerry Writers Museum, The Square, Listowel every Wednesday and in The Ballybunion Health & Leisure Centre every Thursday.

SMALL MERCIES

New York Times bestselling author

Dennis Lehane returns with a masterpiece to rival Mystic Riveran all-consuming tale of revenge, family love, festering hate, and insidious power, set against one of the most tumultuous episodes in Boston’s history.

‘Mrs. Fennessy, please go home.’

‘And do what?’

‘Whatever you do when you’re home.’

‘And then what?’

‘Get up the next day and do it again.’

She shakes her head. ‘That’s not living.’

‘It is if you can find the small blessings.’

She smiles, but her eyes shine with agony. ‘All my small blessings are gone.’

In the summer of 1974 a heatwave blankets Boston and Mary Pat Fennessey is trying to stay one step ahead of the bill collectors. Mary Pat has lived her entire life in the housing projects of ‘Southie’, the Irish American enclave that stubbornly adheres to old tradition and stands proudly apart.

One night Mary Pat’s teenage daughter Jules stays out late and doesn’t come home. That same evening, a young Black man is found dead, struck by a subway train under mysterious circumstances.

The two events seem unconnected. But Mary Pat, propelled by a desperate search for her missing daughter, begins turning over stones best left untouched - asking questions that bother Marty Butler, chieftain of the Irish mob, and the men who work for him, men who don’t take kindly to any threat to their business.

Set against the hot, tumultuous months when the city’s desegregation of its public schools exploded in violence, Small Mercies is a superb thriller, a brutal depiction of criminality and power, and an unflinching portrait of the dark heart of American racism.

GAA NEWS

Senior teams:

Our senior teams, hurling and football, suffered narrowly in both codes at the weekend.

On Friday evening our Senior hurling team suffered a two points loss to near neighbours Causeway in the Credit Union sponsored County League played in Ballyduff

On Sunday Cromane were visitors in the County Football League. In a low scoring first half the visitors led by two points. Cromane were the better side in the second half and led by seven points going into the closing stages. Ballyduff made a last-ditch effort and points from Kevin Goulding (2) and Killian Boyle (1) and a goal from Jack O’Sullivan left the minimum between them. Ballyduff were denied two chances to level it and when we got a shot in oi goals it was waved wide, and time ran out on us. Of the five games played in the County League we have lost a game by two points and a game by one while having drawn three games so with a bit of luck we could be further up the table. Before the game a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Mike Slattery who died on Saturday last.

Minor Hurling:

Congratulations to our Minor hurling team who made a successful start to their County League campaign when they defeated Crotta/ Kilmoyley at Dromakee on Sunday morning last.

Ballyduff and Ladies Walk Gaa Club:

It was with great sadness that we received the news of the death of Mike Slattery, Glounerdalive or “Mikeen” as he was affectionately known. He gave a lifetime of service to the GAA and many other organisations. He was one of the founders of the Ladies Walk Hurling Club when they were reformed in 1966. He played hurling with Ballyduff at underage and played with Kerry minor and Under 21 level in the full back position, He was corner back on the Ballyduff team that overcame O’Neill’s Crotta in the Senior Hurling Championship Final in 1972. A serious knee injury put an end to his involvement at Senior level but continued to line out with the Walker’s

At administration level he served as Secretary and vice Chairman of Ballyduff GAA, and he was joint Secretary of the North Kerry Hurling Board in the seventies as well as Chairman in the noughties. Mike represented Ladies Walk at North Kerry Hurling Board and County Board for some years and was ever present as a Steward at Austin Stack Park on match days rarely missing a game. He was awarded the Hall of Fame by the North Kerry Hurling board in recent years. Though in failing health for some time he continued to live life to the full and on the night prior to his death he attended the County Senior Hurling League game Ballyduff v Causeway in Ballyduff. He will be sadly missed by his sons Cathal and David, daughters Lorraine and Claire, grandchildren, sisters Eileen and Martina, brothers Jim, John Brendan & Gerard, nephews, nieces and a huge circle of friends. May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.

U20 Football:

Congratulations to Adam Segal who was on the Kerry Under 20 panel that defeated Cork on Monday evening of last week in Pairc Ui Chaoimh is the Eirgrid sponsored Munster Under 20 Football Championship. They now go forward

DEATHS

The death took place of John Kennedy, Church Street, Tarbert. John who was aged 93 years was possibly Tarbert’s oldest male resident. John died after a short stay at Kilcara Nursing Home, Duagh. He reposed at St Mary’s Funeral Home on Thursday 27 April. His Requiem Mass took place on Friday in St. Mary’s Church, Tarbert. The Mass was celebrated by neighbour and family friend Fr. John O’Connor, assisted by Fr. Philip O’Connell. His nephew Dr Michael Kennedy spoke of John’s long life, independent spirit and prowess as a sportsman. St Mary’s Choir under the direction of Dr Declan Downey sang hymns of praise and celebration. At the graveside in St Mary’s Cemetery he was given the traditional send off with some of his favourite songs. Declan Downey and Stella Enright sang ‘The Spinning Wheel’, John’s nephew Colm sang ‘The Boys of Barr na Sráide’ and Tomás Coolahan sang ‘My Silver River Feale’.

John was one of three children, two boys and a girl, born to Michael and Bridget Kennedy(née Flynn) in what used to be Miss Ahern’s shop. He attended St. Ita’s College and after completing his secondary school education he and his brother Noel worked the family farm in Dooncaha. Both Kennedy brothers were all round athletes participating in running, cycling, swimming, athletics, etc. There are few now who can remember those titanic struggles in the old Horsepark in the Fifties and Sixties when Tarbert played the best of North Kerry teams. I can still see in the mind’s eye, Johneen, not the most stylish of footballers, jersey and chest out making a burst up the middle of the field when all seemed lost. But then it was typical of the Kennedy brothers, grandsons of a jailed Land Leaguer, who would rally support when all seemed lost and the cause demanded it. John lived a long, healthy, independent, happy life. At the end of his days he watched from his front window the daily ebb and flow of everyday life’, remembering old happy far off things and battles long ago. ‘He was predeceased by his brother Noel and nephew Philip. Sympathy of the community to his sister Mai O’Brien, Feenagh, County Limerick, nephews Michael, Colm and Fergus, nieces Brenda, Paula, Ide, Nola and brother-in-law Billy O’Brien.

The death took place of Patricia O’Connor (née Anglim) of Saleen House, Kilcolgan Upper Tarbert. Patricia died on Thursday 27 April at the Palliative Care Unit, UHK Tralee at the age of 57, after a long illness borne with great fortitude. She reposed at her residence on Friday and her Requiem Mass took place in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert on Saturday 29 April. There was a guard of honour of IFA members as her remains were carried into the Church, acknowledging her long involvement with the farming organisation. Her Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr. John O’Connor, Fr. Eamon O’Brien, cousin and Fr. Philip O’Connell. Fr. John spoke of the four great loves in her life - love of faith, family, farming and friends. Relatives brought gifts to the altar which marked her love of farming and fashion. Michael’s uncle on behalf of the family named and thanked

all the kind neighbours, friends and relatives who had been so good to Patricia during her long illness.

Patricia was born in Tarmons Hill, Tarbert to Patsy and Joan Anglim(nee McMahon). She never knew her father Patsy who died aged 47 before she was born. She never met her brother Patrick who died in infancy. Her mother Joan and uncle Sonny Anglim managed the family farm while Patricia was growing up. She later married Michael P O’Connor and they farmed extensively in Kilcolgan and Tarmons. They had two children, son Pádraig and a daughter Shona. Sadly a life well lived came to a premature end for Patricia. St. Mary’s Choir under the direction of Dr Declan Downey sang a selection of hymns which she had selected. After the Requiem Mass her remains were interred in the adjoining St Mary’s Cemetery beside her parents and baby brother. Sympathy of the community is extended to her husband Michael, daughter Shona, son Pádraig, sister-in-law Maura Gaynor, brother-in-law, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Suaimhneas síoraí go raibh achu in Iothlainn Dé agus leaba i measc na naomh is na n-aingil go raibh ag John agus Patricia.

Sympathy of the community to the Murphy family, Clonakilty and the Kelly family, Tarbert on the recent death of Dan Murphy, Clonakilty. Dan was husband of the late Janet Kelly, Main Street, Tarbert who died in June 2019.

CHURCH FINANCES

Dr. Declan Downey, on behalf of the Church Finance Committee had some good news to report at Masses last weekend. The audited Financial Report for the year ended 31 December 2022 revealed an audited surplus of €5,990 with all bills paid. Significant increases in operating costs such as heating and salary costs were offset by significant increases in offertory collections, donations and prudent cost management/ The Committee would like to thank everybody who contributed to the finances. They also thank Parish Secretary, James Lavery for his continuing dedication and hard work throughout the year. The full Report appears on the Church Newsletter and can be viewed online at www.stmarystarbert.com

BEALE GAA

Beale seniors made it back-to-back victories when we defeated Keel in round 5 of the County League on Sunday. Following on a great performance the previous week, another great game was in store. And our lads certainly did not disappoint. Playing conditions were ideal at Páirc de Staic with a cross-field breeze, as spectators were treated to some good displays of football.

We were first to hit our stride, kicking the opening two points. All the scores in the first half came in the opening ten minutes. Despite some fine passages ofplay by both teams, the rest of the half-remained barren of scores. We had most of the possession, dictatingthe terms and conditionsand lead by the bare minimum at the interval, 0-3 to 0-2.

We had the edge on the field of play again on the changeover with some fine teamwork. We stretched the lead to three points going into the final ten minutes, 0-8 to 0-5. ASDEE GAA

Credit Union County League Division 5B: Asdee 0-11 Waterville 1-14 Asdee GAA played host to Division 5 table-toppers Waterville who made their first appearance in Jack Walsh Park on Saturday evening last and after a well contested encounter it was the visitors who came away with the County League points. Certainly, Asdee gave as good as they got, especially in the second half where they more than owned that final 30mts. However it was the slow start that cost them the game, poor passing, giving away turn overs and at the break looked in real trouble down 9pts to 2pts. It looked an uphill battle starting off the second half Eoin Kennedy departed the scene through injury but Asdee dug deep and were to cause plenty problems for a fancied South Kerry side shrewd positional switches were to work immediately as the home side went about their business in great style winning a lot of the midfield exchanges. Waterville were now on the back-foot and it took a goal with under 5mts remaining to help them get over the line. Asdee have improved their game considerably and are well positioned to reach the next phase of the competition. Team and scorers; James Kelly, Con Carmody, Martin Collins, John Daly, Jack Collins, Sean Keane, Patrick Mulvihill,1pt, Jack Keane, Stephen Lynch, Paul O Carroll, 4pts, John Doran, Eoin Kennedy, Kieran Kelly, Eoin Tydings, 3pts, Darragh Keane, 3pts. Subs; Cyril Dineen for Eoin Kennedy, (inj), Jack Hannon, Michael Walsh, Brian Coughlan
