• Improvements in their cognitive skills such as higher-order and critical thinking.
• Developing their cultural awareness and knowledge.
• Developing their learning and communication strategies.

GRADUATION MASS FOR PRESENTATION LEAVING CERTS 2023
Last Friday Presentation Secondary School Listowel gathered to mark the Leaving Certs 2023 graduation with a celebration of the Eucharist in the school hall. Carefully prepared by the liturgy committee and their Religious Education teachers the class were joined by family and friends for a Mass, celebrated by Canon Declan O’Connor, the beautiful liturgy signalled the end of not only the school term, but also the students’ years at Presentation school. The importance of ritual to mark such a significant time was noted and the symbols and prayers chosen for the mass reflected the students’ experience of school life over the past few years.
School principal, Katherina Broderick spoke of the bright future awaiting the graduating class and encouraged them to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead of them at this gateway of change.’ Our mass and the readings chosen remind us of the importance of embracing change because Life is a sacred journey. It is about change, growth, discovery’
Throughout the ceremony there was a deep sense of gratitude expressed by the students to those who have supported them to reach this juncture and they made floral presentations to their Year head and LCA coordinator and teaching staff.
The gathered community then enjoyed light refreshments in the school canteen where Leaving Cert student, Laura Purcell delighted all with a photographic trip down memory lane and her kind words of appreciation on behalf of the Leaving Cert class 2023. It was a most enjoyable & momentous occasion for all.
NEWKD Home Visitation Service/HSE Community Work Department
On Monday, 22nd of May, 2023, NEWKD Home Visitation Service in conjunction with the HSE Community Work Department hosted a Reconnecting with Services for Older Persons day in Listowel Community Centre.
The focus of the Reconnecting Day was to provide an opportunity for people to connect and engage with peers and engage with the host of services that are available in North Kerry. A myriad of Research shows that Social Engagement can have a positive impact on the psychological, physical and cognitive health in several ways. Studies have shown that older people who have close connections and relationships not only live longer, but also cope better with health conditions and experience less depression. Days like the Reconnecting Day can often be the first step for many to join a local group, a walking club or volunteer in a local activity.
Over 150 older people attended the day which consisted of over 20 information stands from services for older people in the North Kerry and wider Kerry area including: NEWKD’s Home Maintenance, Home Visitation Service, Senior Alert Service and SICAP. Information Stands were also present from Community Health Network 1, Better Balance Better Bones programme, Memory Technology Resource Room, Kerry Local Link, Meals on Wheels, Integrated Care Plan for Older People (ICPOP), Ard Chúram, Men’s Sheds, Kerry’s Call, Alone, Like bikes, Kerry Respite Care and more.
Jimmy Deenihan opened the event with a very informative talk on active aging. Eibhlis Cahalane, Senior Physio with HSE Older Persons Services gave a presentation on the importance of movement in daily life. The final speakers were Catherine Murphy (OT with MTRR) and Dolores McElligott, Team Leader Older Persons, Kerry Community Work Dept. They spoke about Dementia, the signs, symptoms and how Listowel has started becoming a Dementia inclusive community.
Ed O’Connor, NEWKD Home Visitation Co-ordinator said;
“NEWKD were delighted to facilitate today’s event in collaboration with HSE Community Work Department. Our 2nd Reconnecting Event held the same themes as last year in it offers older persons the chance to engage with the fantastic services that are available to them in North Kerry and throughout the county and it also allows us to bring these services together so the connection between the services is stronger and more4 collaborative. We have produced a booklet, which is FREE, that will be available shortly with information about all the services you see here today and many more besides.”

SAN RITA WELLNESS
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well
This week we are focusing on your “Table Manners“
Studies show that watching TV or being on a device while eating your meals increases portion sizes and appetites because we are not properly engaged with our food. Eating away from distractions is therefore helpful for weight loss. Even for a person on their own it is also very easy to fall into the trap of distraction for example sitting on the couch in front of the TV with your meal on your lap.
Families eating together has been proven to help children bond with their parents, for example catching up after the day as well as developing healthy eating habits. Now that we are all in a more structured routine, there are probably more of us around the table at the one time now as we are starting the Summer holidays.
BEST LAID PLANS
Let’s say you’ve convinced the family to eat at the table with you, here are some tips on how to lay it for weight loss success.
* Clear any distractions off the table such as newspapers, devices etc
* Make the table look appealing by having a place set for everyone.
* Use nice colourful plates. ( They are no use up on the dresser ) * Have your meal planned in advance so you are really looking forward to it.
TABLE FOR ONE
If you are cooking for one it can be easy to neglect making a proper meal of dinner, so try these ideas to create a positive impact on your weight loss.
• A ready meal can be an easy option, but why not commit to cooking a new simple recipe once a week
• Take the time to cook a large quantity of your favourite meal which you can then freeze in batches, giving you a quick and healthy ready meal for when you’re short on time.
• Try eating at the table instead of on the sofa in front of the TV, even if it’s just occasionally.
So whether you are eating on your own or with the family, being more mindful of what is on your plate and allowing yourself time for your meal, you are more aware of feeling satisfied and are less likely to go back for second helpings.
ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR ONE
Cooking the one type of meal to suit yourself and the rest of the family works well. Any recipe can be adapted to suit everyone in the house, which makes life easier especially for the cook. This time of the year stews, soups and casseroles are ideal as they can be done in the one pot.
To make your meals even more colourful and satisfying include lots of fruit and vegetables which most are calorie free on our “San Rita Wellness Plan“
“Be aware of your behaviour and savour the flavour“
For extra support and for weekly accountability check us out on Facebook San Rita Wellness or sanritawellness.ie for details of our “In Person Meetings“, “At Home Service“ or our “One to One Service“.

BE MINE
By
Richard Ford
From Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Ford: the final novel in the world of Frank Bascombe, one of the most indelible characters in American literature
Over the course of four celebrated works of fiction and almost forty years, Richard Ford has crafted an ambitious, incisive, and singular view of American life as lived. Unconstrained, astute, provocative, often laugh-out-loud funny, Frank Bascombe is once more our guide to the great American midway.
Now in the twilight of life, a man who has occupied many colorful lives-sportswriter, father, husband, ex-husband, friend, real estate agent-Bascombe finds himself in the most sorrowing role of all: caregiver to his son, Paul, diagnosed with ALS. On a shared winter odyssey to Mount Rushmore, Frank, in typical Bascombe fashion, faces down the mortality that is assured each of us, and in doing so confronts what happiness might signify at the end of days.
In this memorable novel, Richard Ford puts on displays the prose, wit, and intelligence that make him one of our most acclaimed living writers. Be Mine is a profound, funny, poignant love letter to our beleaguered world.

GOLF CLASSIC
In 2022, Tralee Parnells was granted a 13 year licence for the use of the GAA pitch at the Tralee Sports Complex in Oakpark for our Academy players – “Pairc na Darach”. In order to upgrade the pitch at Pairc na Darach to make it suitable for playing hurling and camogie, we need to invest a substantial amount of money – already the club has invested substantially to provide ball-stops, nets, landscaping and sanding. Further funding is required to complete the work so our young hurlers and camogie players can display their skills on a top-quality playing surface in a safe environment. To this end, we are running our inaugural Golf Classic in Beaufort Golf Club on Friday July 21st next. We would be delighted if GAA clubs would consider sponsoring a team – a team of 4 costs €200 to enter. There are alternative sponsorship options also available. Of course, Tralee Parnells would be delighted with support of any kind that you might be in a position to offer. Your support would be very much appreciated.

WEDDING BELLS
The Wedding took place of Elaine Wren, daughter of Michael and Patricia Wren,
DEATHS
The death took place of Maureen Cregan (née Hanrahan) of Tieraclea, Tarbert and formerly of Aughrim, Moyvane. Maureen who was aged 92 died on 20 May after a short illness at University Hospital Kerry. She reposed at St Mary’s Funeral Home, Tarbert on Wednesday 24 May. Her Requiem Mass took place in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert on Thursday 25 May and was celebrated by Fr John O’Connor assisted by Fr Philip O’Connell Fr. John recalled Maureen and her friend Maggie Culhane, both cycling from Moyvane in the early 1950’s to the four penny hops in the Parish Hall in Tarbert. Here they would meet two cousins, both carpenters working in Gerald O’Sullivan’s workshop in Chapel Street. Michael O’Sullivan would later marry Maggie Culhane and Brendan Cregan would marry Maureen Hanrahan. They would both live and settle in Tarbert and rear their families there. Maureen’s eldest son Johnny recalled the different phases in his mother’s life, her courage, resolve and concern for the well-being of her family of four boys and three girls. He concluded by echoing the words of a celebrity singer who had also passed away in saying that his mother ‘was simply the Best’. After Mass, hymns by St Mary’s Choir and condolences, Maureen was laid to rest, in the adjoining Church graveyard, beside her late husband Brendan who died in September 1987. The family led the mourners in singing ‘The Old Refrain’ with the words ‘My Childhood joys again come back to me and my mother’s face in fancy too I see. It was my mother taught me how to sing, and to that memory my heart will cling’.
Sympathy of the Community is extended to her family to John, Mary, Anne, Seamus, Denis, Thomas and Tina, daughters-in-law, sons-inlaw, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, neighbours and friends.
Sympathy also to Andy Carmody, New York and formerly of Chapel Street, Tarbert on the death of his wife Margaret, formerly O’Reilly of Drumbad, Gortletteragh, County Leitrim who died in New York. Margaret died on 24 May following a long illness. Her funeral service will take place to St Mary’s Church on Wednesday 31 May and she will be buried in the adjoining New Cemetery. Sympathy also to her sister Nancy, her brother Cathal and the extended family, relatives , neighbours and friends. Sympathy also to Kay Brannigan, Woodview Place on the death of her son-in-law Tommy Cavanagh, Essex, England.

FINUGE GAA
PITCH DEVELOPMENT: Following on from the recent work carried out, the pitch has re-opened for all normal activities. A big word of thanks to Aidan O’Sullivan for his ongoing hard work and commitment behind the scenes to ensure the facilities are at their best!
CLUB FUNDRAISING: The club is in the process of launching a new fundraising initiative called the ‘Finuge 500’. This will see a monthly draw for €500 cash with entry costing €5 for each month. The prize of €500 must be won each month - there are no carry overs or roll overs! Watch out for further details as we get closer to the time!! These funds will be used to help run the club and cover the day-to-day costs of keeping the club open. The proceeds of the large car raffle fundraiser which the club ran last year are being used to fund capital projects such as the development of the juvenile pitch, upgrade the general facilities and improve the pitch - such as was done over the past month. The club wishes to thank everyone for their support so far and look forward to running the monthly fundraiser and making someone €500 better off each month!
SENIOR: The next phase of county league fixtures has been released. Finuge are in the “Cup” competition and will start the group games with an away match with Scartaglin this Sunday the 4th of June. After that the fixtures read - at home to Waterville on the 11th of June, Asdee away on the 25th of June and Kilgarvan at home on the 9th of July. Best of luck to the team and management. The ultimate finalists will be promoted to division four.
MINORS: Our minors were in North Kerry league action last Monday evening with a home game to Northern Gaels. The boys put on a strong display to run out comfortable winners in the end, on the final score… Finuge 3-13, Northern Gaels 2-06. Well done to team & management. Next up will be a game against Beale.
U15: It’s been a rest week for the U15s following on from their county league final two weeks ago - a well deserved break!
U13: Our U13s were in county league action last Sunday evening when they welcomed Fossa to James O’Sullivan park. On a hot sunny evening both teams got off to a cagey start with the teams trading points. The halftime score stood at Finuge 0-03 to Fossa’s 0-04 despite Finuge having an amount of possession and missed opportunities. Play opened up more in the second half with both teams scoring two goals and taking some nice points. Our lads took a five-point lead only for Fossa to pull it back and then take the lead with a goal and the clock moving on. The Finuge boys fought really hard the last few minutes and got the equalising goal with time nearly up! Final score: Finuge 2-08, Fossa 2-08. A fair result in the end although our boys will regret quite a number of wides! Thomas Keane was team captain following on from some great displays and high scoring, well done Thomas. We await details of the semifinal set for this weekend.
U11: Phase two of the county Go Games opened with a game agauinst Brosna last Thursday. Another good display from our team who have really gelled quite well over the earlier phase one. Next up is a home game with Skellig Rangers this Thursday evening. Other teams in the new group include Tarbert, St Marys and Gneeveguilla. Best of luck to the team.
U9: Last Friday the team played Tarbert away on a beautiful summer evening. Another great performance from all involved - well done to the team. Awaiting details of the next game.
U7: The game against Beale has been rescheduled - wishing the best of luck to

all the boys and girls lining out, have great fun!
KERRY DEVELOPMENT SQUADS: It has been a great source of pride and satisfaction lately to see our various youth players commencing or continuing with the Kerry development squads. At Kerry U14 we have three players selectedJamie Breen, Joseph McElligott and Mathew Flaherty. The U14 activity started last weekend when the squad went to Kildare and played a series of games against the home county. At Kerry U16 level Gavin O’Keeffe continues on his track with the county squad - last weekend they travelled to play Mayo. Well done and congratulations to the players selected - it is a great endorsement of the club coaches, your families and yourselves for this achievement.
MEMBERSHIP is overdue by all members old and new for 2023. Please reach out to your respective manager, if on a team. Thank you for your continued support, it is greatly appreciated by the club.
CÚL CAMP: The Camp is open for booking now - all bookings must be done online only. As usual, there is the option to purchase the gear also. Our Finuge camp will be held week July 31st - August 4th. This is always a great week of serious fun so keep an eye out for booking details which we should have in the weeks ahead.
KERRY SENIORS: Best of luck to the Kerry seniors as they travel away to Cork this Saturday - a must win game!
KERRY LADIES: Unfortunately, not the result the team and supporters hoped for last Sunday. A wild first half saw Cork dominate which just left too much for the Kerry Ladies to claw back despite a much stronger showing after halftime. Hard luck to the team and our club representatives Louise Galvin and Niamh Carmody.
U21 ACORN LIFE CHAMPIONSHIP: A quarterfinal victory over Kenmare Shamrocks has the team now into the semifinal against Laune Rangers. Provisional date for this game is the 21st of June - more details to follow. Special mention to our two clubmen involved Kieran MacKessy and Ciaran Commane who are playing well for the division.
POST PRIMARY SCHOOLS FINAL: We had quite a unique situation last week when St Michaels of Listowel met Gaelcholaiste Trá Lí in the first-year division two final. There was a total of eight Finuge players between the two squads. The game was played in our own grounds at O’Sullivan Park and to add further to the intrigue, ex Finuge player Fergus Fitzmaurice was managing the Gaelcholaiste team! Following a dramatic game, the teams finished level and it was decided to share the title as the school year is now drawing to a close. So, our club certainly could not lose out in the circumstances! Well done lads!!

DUAGH / LYRE COMM GAMES
Cycling on grass
In a sun drenched Gormanstown Co Meath, Duagh/Lyre Community Games had two participants representing our area in Kerry at National finals. Leona Mc Mahon u12 and Kate Sheridan u14 had qualified in cycling on grass. A tough event with 2km on grass with hot spot points to be picked up along the route to decide the placings. This event is not for the faint hearted. Both girls had put in serious training under the watchful eye of Andy Keane and John Bunyan. Andy travelled to ensure everything was A1 before the off, offer last minute coaching and support during the event, a true volunteer with an absolute heart of gold. It was Leona’s first National final and this always smiling young lady didn’t let the big day get to her. She cycled her heart out, took off in the lead with the eventual winners. When it was over she wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry it was left all on the pitch. A National silver medal winner and pure joy felt by all. A true champion with a McMahon heart, a deserved winner. We are all so proud of you Leona, supported on the day by Dad Terrence, Mom Tina and big brother Cillian along with family and friends. In the u14’s next up was Kate Sheridan, no stranger to National finals, this was her 4th, previously medallist in cycling on grass and u10 hurdles. Today was no different for Kate, a cool and composed lady with it all in her head. Off she went and battled at hotshots ending up with Silver another beautiful hard earned National medal to add to her collection. Kate has had coach Andy Keane at her side for each of her National finals, what a double act this pairing are. Congratulations Kate we are so proud of you. Kate was supported by her parents Norma and Ferghal and siblings Luke and Ronan, along with family and friends. Congratulations to both girls, great results.

KERRY PITCH & PUTT
The weekend’s National Pitch & Putt Matchplay Championships take place in St Bridgets in Kilcullen, Co Kildare with one of the most unique fields from a Kerry perspective not least because of who is not teeing off in the Short Grass County this weekend.
Due to how the qualifying draw and subsequent results worked out neither three-time winner Damien Fleming nor recent crowned Munster Senior Matchplay winner Jason Cregan of Tralee will be amongst the field. Kerry’s eight players are made up of six players from Tralee and one each from Deerpark and Listowel. The county is guaranteed at least one player in the second round as Tralee duo Michael Conway and Alan Hobbart will face off in the First Round much like they did in the recent Munster Matchplay.
If their club-mate Gavin Carroll wins his Round 1 game with Bruff’s Martin Keohane it will guarantee the county a player in the Last 16 as Jason O’Regan will be the first Kerry player to tee off in the event as he faces Douglas’ Denis O’Sullivan in the third match of the First Round. His son Mark O’Regan is teeing off on Saturday afternoon meanwhile against Padraig Mallon of Trim as the other Tralee player in the field, Tony Blake will tee-off in the last match of the First Round against last year’s runner-up John Cahill from Fermoy.
Listowel’s Chris Gibney plays Bishopstown’s Cian O’Callaghan in the morning session on Saturday while Deerpark’s John McGrath faces Gowran’s Kevin Knox in the afternoon. The Kerry County Board wishes all eight players the very best of luck in Kilcullen this weekend. In action last weekend Damien Fleming came second overall in the 54-hole Rocklodge Scratch Cup in Cork with a score of 30 under par for his three rounds, three off the winning score of 33 under posted by Bryan Delaney from Bishopstown.
At county level we ask U16 players to note that the County U16 Strokeplay will take place in Deerpark on Saturday July 1 while the County U16 Matchplay will take place in Tralee on Saturday September 2. Details on the Inter-County team trial process will be announced in due course.

Padre Pio Counsel for June.
Do not be at all surprised at your weakness, but acknowledge what you are and blush at your identity towards God, then confide in him and abandon yourdelf in the arms of your Heavenly Father like a child in the arms of his Mother.
THE MIRACLE PRAYER
Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.
This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen.
Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. J.M.c.
OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven.
Blessed Mother of the Son of God; Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity
(Mention your request here)
There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Amen
This prayer is never known to fail. It is to be said for 3 consecutive days. Publication on granting of the favour must be promised and done. MoF
MEANING OF LIFE
“The King shook my hand! A real live king! I feel so special.l never met a real king before! I’ve only ever seen them in fairy tales. I’m so excited.”
A little girl in the crowd gathered to welcome King Charles and Queen Camilla as they arrived at Newtownabbey in Co.Antrim some time ago couldn’t conceal her delight as the reporter asked her what she thought of the King. It got me thinking.
Psalm 47 tells me that “God is King of all the earth..... God reigns over the nations; He is seated in His Holy Throne..... the kings of the earth belong to God.” That speaks for itself.
Revelation 17:14 declares that Jesus “is Lord of lords and King of kings.”
Zechariah 14:9 states “And the Lord will be King over all the earth.”
So that is all very clear. But listen to this. John 1:12 tells me “To all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God.” Read it again! Here’s the fact. If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour; if you are following Him YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE KING. What an honour!! And furthermore Romans 8:17 declares “And since we are His children, we are His heirs. In fact,

HOLY SPIRIT
You who solve all problems, who lights all roads so that I can attain my goals. You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things and to confirm that I never want to be separated from you, even and in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen.
Say this prayer for three consequtive days and when the request is answered, as it always is, publish the prayer. MoF
And more Good News. Daniel 7:14 says “His dominion is an everlasting Kingdom which will not pass away and His Kingdom is one which will not be destroyed.” It’s win win all the way!
2 Corinthians 6:18 tells me that “l am a daughter of the Most High King l am not moved by the world for my God is with me and goes before me. I do not fear because l am His.”
The benefits of being the Son or daughter of the Most High King, the One,True and Living God cannot be surpassed by anything on this earth...... forgiveness of sin, everlasting life, relationship with the God of the universe, His Holy Spirit Living within, adoption into God’s family....
A handshake from King Charles is one thing but come on! Nothing compares to being a child of the King of kings and Lord of lords. So, claim your crown. You will never regret it.

NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA
St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith. I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays.
Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (Mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities.
I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet.
Say one Our Father and three Hail Marys with a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha.
This miraculous Saint grants every thing before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. Grateful Thanks. N.F.
