NEW GARDA RESOURCES FOR KERRY – DEENIHAN

“Kerry is to receive 12 new Garda vehicles in total during the course of 2015 to boost the fight against rural crime. Some of these vehicles are already in action”, says Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Diaspora Affairs.”

Furthermore 10 probationer Gardai have been allocated to Tralee. 5 arrived on the 8th of May and 5 arrived on the 7th of August. All 10 of these will assist in providing additional patrols in the Square and Town Centre of Tralee. “New Garda vehicles will really help the fight against crime in our communities. While better road networks provide great opportunities for local businesses, they also make it easier for burglars to travel to and from the Kerry area. New legislation planned by the Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, will also keep repeat offenders in prison for longer and act as a significant deterrent.”

“Providing resources for Gardaí and ensuring that legislation is in place to deter repeat offenders is essential to preventing rural crime. In addition to the new vehicles for 2015, €27.5 million was invested in new Garda vehicles between 2012 and 2014, which was an increase on the €4.8 million allocated by the previous Government in Budgets 2009-2011. “This Government is also strengthening An Garda Siochana for the future by reopening the Garda training college in Templemore and recruiting 550 new Gardaí. The first intake of 100 new recruits entered Templemore in September 2014 and passed out in April of this year. A further 200 recruits entered in December 2014 and February 2015, with 250 more expected to begin training later this year. When Fianna Fáil closed Templemore it was a major blow to An Garda Siochana and to rural areas.

“Our local Gardai will be really bolstered by this influx of new vehicles and Gardaí, which is part of the Government’s comprehensive plan to fight crime.”

LISTOWEL TRADERS VERY MUCH AGAINST THE PROPOSED BY-PASS OF THE TOWN

Some of the issues arising...

Listowel, as an economic hub, slowly but steadily came out of the recession years, due to the tenacity of local, and often, family run businesses, that have served the Listowel community for generations. Now we have the pleasure of witnessing the ultimate vote-of-confidence in the future of Listowel as we welcome new businesses into our town, in fact four new businesses opened in the past few months. There is a shared positive attitude amongst the local business people, an understanding that we together survived very tough years, but we are finally out the other side, and are ready to reinvest in our businesses, create more jobs and add to the vibrancy of our unique historic town. The question needs to be asked whether Listowel actually has a traffic problem or a parking problem? How many times a week is there traffic congestion in the centre of town? What proportion of the traffic is due to school collections, or cars returning from work elsewhere between 5 and 6? What percentage of the perceived problem is due to bad planning, inadequate and inappropriate traffic calming solutions, lack of creative thinking in areas such as parking availability, land acquisition of green field sites and so on. Surely creating busy urban centres is the goal? If the By-Pass goes ahead, the planners get it wrong, and our town is destroyed? Will they tear up the new road and apologise for the inconvenience caused? We don't think so.

If the by pass goes ahead, the plans for the much anticipated Great Southern Trail will be shelved. The Great Southern Trail has the capacity to create 1,000s of jobs in adventure tourism and related areas in the North Kerry Area. If the planned route for the By-Pass goes ahead it will destroy any hopes of this major tourist attraction and local amenity being developed. Should the priority for the council be The Great Southern Trail or the by-pass? Who is Listowel being by-passed for? Are we being by-passed so that tourists coming from Clare can speed faster towards south Kerry on the Wild Atlantic Way? Or fast tracked to Killarney? Have any of these planners actually driven around county Clare? Are any tourists there encouraged to by-pass the major towns like Kilrush, Ennistymon, Lahinch? Certainly not, it would totally defeat the purpose of getting tourists to visit. Rate payers in the Listowel area have been a very quiet bunch, they have paid a high price for remaining in business even when trading was lean, even when the annual commercial rate didn't reflect the economic climate of the time. Now we are a bustling beautiful town, proud of its heritage and excited for its future. Planners need to think again, they need to reassess a plan that was drawn up many years ago, they need to ask the right questions, is it this the right solution now? We as traders do not think our needs or the needs of our community are being met by this solution.

An important milestone for Credit Unions was reached recently when CUSOP, the Credit Union movement’s electronic payments platform, had it one millionth transaction. This service has been introduced in over eighty Credit Unions throughout the country, including Clanmaurice Credit Union Ltd. When asked how Clanmaurice Credit Union Ltd. had benefited from using this service, Ailish Segal (CEO) said “Our credit union has seen huge benefits to using the CUSOP electronic payments platform. We are now offering our members more services, and looking to add even more. We also believe that, by having a modern transaction service, we are attracting more young people as members as they can carry out their transactions from anywhere in the EU area,” Ailish Segal said. Thanks to CUSOP, Clanmaurice Credit Union Ltd. members are able to have payments from a bank, employer or social welfare office paid directly into their credit union accounts by electronic transfer.

CUSOP, is a credit union movement initiative that enables members to carry out their payments transactions electronically and has the capacity to introduce a range of modern financial services in the future. It is the largest provider of this service to credit unions. Celebrating its one millionth transaction, Mr Kevin O’Donovan, CEO says that CUSOP was recording 55% growth in transactions this year. “The volume growth reflects the accelerated connection of credit unions to CUSOP and we are now processing over 200,000 transactions a month. Reaching this one millionth milestone so quickly highlights the credit unions support and confidence in this movement-led initiative. With current growth continuing, we believe it can be the provider of choice on electronic payments products now and into the future for all credit unions,” Kevin said.

Representatives from local business who are concerned about the planned new road development to reroute traffic away from the town' the group are calling for more parking spaces to be made available and to make use of both green field and derelict town centre sites

Tarbert's Deb's students were amazed when they were dancing to the music of DJ Lynchy to be joined by the 8 foot high dancing robot. Robot Ted surprised his spectators performing for over 2 hours dancing with students before posing for a series of selfies as the students stood in awe of his sheer size & design. Debs Guru representatives have said they are delighted with his performance and the reaction from students was extremely positive about their Debs night experience. Darragh Sheehy (leaving cert student) said that as it wasn't ordered by the Debs Committee, his peers couldn't believe their eyes when Robot Ted entered the dance floor at the Ballyroe Heights and began his performance. CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE ON THE THEFT OF HOME HEATING OIL

With the approach of autumn most households will commence to prepare for colder weather and in most cases begin to purchase large quantities of home heating oil. An Garda Siochana have found that incidents of oil theft dramatically increases during the autumn / winter seasons when we try to stay warm from the inclement weather. A number of simple security measures can be taken by householders to reduced the risk of their oil being illegally removed, some examples: • Location: The location of a householder’s oil tank can have a significant effect on how thief’s can view a target. The location of a tank as close to the house in accordance with regulations and in view of a window would be a good deterrent as the risk of getting caught may be too high. • Security: The presence of a fence / wall can also act as a deterrent to potential thieves. It can prevent easy access to the tank and cause obstructions. The use of defensive planting is also another source of prevention. In addition, a good quality padlock is another available option. • C.C.T.V: CCTV in recent years has become more available and a cheap option in the deterrent of home heating oil theft. CCTV recording facilities become available intermittently in various supermarkets on occasion. It should be noted that while it may not prevent home heating oil from being taken it may assist in the identification of opportunistic thieves. • Lighting: The use of sensor lighting is another relatively cheap option which may be utilised by householders. Strategic lighting can have a very positive effect in the deterrent of thieves. • Crime prevention advice is also available on the Garda Website at www.garda.ie House holders should keep a list of emergency contact numbers close to hand for east reference and should report any activity, which they deem as suspicious to their local Garda Station. Advice from Superintendent Daniel Keane of Listowel Garda Station.

COUNTY LEAGUE TARBERT 5-2 TEMPLENOE 1-18 This game was played in Ballymac and for the second week in a row it was Tarbert who started the strongest with two excellent goals from Andrew Doherty and Donal Leahy to lead after ten minutes on a scoreline of 2-1 to 0-2. Two points from Templenoe reduced the deficit before another cracker of a goal from Tarbert’s Gerald O’Sullivan left the score at 3-1 to 0-4. Templenoe made some tactical switches with full forward line beginning to cause trouble to the Tarbert defence and some excellent points put Templenoe in front by one point at half time on a scoreline of 3-1 to 0-11. Two quick points at the restart by Templenoe put then up three but this Tarbert side would not yield and another goal by full forward Donal Leahy put the sides level again. Then against the run of plat Templenoe broke up the field and Pat Spillane executed an excellent goal to put them in front again. Templenoe added another two points to go up five but another Tarbert goal this time by mid fielder Conor Flavin reduced the deficit to two entering the final five minutes. Templenoe held their nerve and added three more points to win on a scoreline of 1-18 to 5-2. Tarbert to their credit never gave up but this result almost certainly relegates them to Division 3 foorball next year. COISTE NA NOG This was a relatively quiet week for most teams with only a few games on the docket as the season starts to wind down. On Tuesday, the Under-14 hurlers traveled to Crotta where they had a great win. The Under-16 hurlers also had a good win against Ballyheigue on Thursday evening. On Friday, the Under-12 hurlers also faced Ballyheigue on the main pitch in Ballyduff. They were not as successful, however, as the visitors scored a first minute goal and, despite a brave second half stand by the home team, Ballyheigue never relinquished control. Training continues for most sides in the coming week with a few blitzes and competitions still to decide. The Under-8 footballers had their year's progress measured this week with a skills session at their training session on Thursday. Michael Houlihan was the big winner in the ball skills assessment while Jack Enright took the kicking skills spoils. This group has really come on during the summer and it was great to see the development on show. Keep up the good work, all. BALLYDUFF GAA NEWS HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP - Ballyduff will play Kilmoyley in the semifinal of the Garvey’s SuperValu County Senior Hurling Championship at Abbeydorney on Sunday evening next August 30th at 6.00pm. Please come out and support the “Boys in Green”.

ALL IRELAND TICKETS - Now that the Kerry senior team has reached yet another All Ireland Senior Football Championship Final and the minor footballers will contest the Minor Championship final on Sunday September 20th the quest for the coveted All Ireland tickets gets underway immediately. Any fully paid up member of the Ballyduff GAA Club wishing to have their names included in the draw for tickets need to have contacted Liam Ross (086)3567315 or Paudie County (087)7748473 by Monday September 14th for inclusion in the draw. LADY'S WALK HURLING CLUB Lady's Walk 1 – 14 Kilmoyley 1 – 14 Causeway was the venue for the 2015 Rhyno Mills North Kerry Junior League Final, where Kilmoyley and Lady’s Walk played out a draw on Wednesday evening last. A draw was deemed a fair result as the sides were level, a total of eight times over the hour. We trailed 0-9 to 1-9 at the interval, with the majority of our first half scores coming from Aidan Boyle & Thomas O'Rourke. Kilmoyley's goal on the stroke of half time was cancelled out in the fourth minute of the second half when substitute Gary O'Brien, with his first touch, crashed the ball to the net, after being set up by Daniel O'Carroll. A quick puck out by Joe Bunyan found David Goulding in space, who dispatched to Daniel O'Carroll, and he pointed to give us a two point lead 1 – 13 to 1 – 11 in the 18th minute. However, the next three points came from Kilmoyley to put them one point in front, with three minutes left on the clock. Thomas O'Rourke, in the 29th minute leveled the game, when he pointed from a free. Unfortunately, fading light prevented the scheduled extra time to be played. At the time of writing, no date, time or venue has been fixed for the replay. Lady's Walk Team: Joe Bunyan; Cathal Kearney, Joe Murphy, Thomas Slattery; Michael Hussey, Anthony O’Carroll (Capt.), John Paul Leahy; Daniel O’Carroll (0 – 3), Ally O'Connor; John Dowling, Paul O'Carroll, Thomas O'Rourke (0 – 6); Eddie Joy (0 – 1), Aidan Boyle (0 – 4), Sean Browne. SUBS: Gary O'Brien 1-0, David Goulding, Cathal White and David Slattery. Lady’s Walk Hurling Club wishes Ballyduff senior hurlers all the best in the County Senior Hurling Championship semi-final on this Sunday against old rivals Kilmoyley at Abbeydorney at 6.00pm. JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS A very enjoyable night was had at Fels Point Hotel Tralee on Saturday night last, when the Golden Jubilee of the Club was celebrated. Proceedings got underway with Mass which was celebrated by Club Patron & former Team Captain Fr Patrick O'Brien at the Hotel. This was followed by an excellent meal. MC on the night was Club Secretary John Paul Leahy. Other speakers included, Club Chairman Mike Slattery, Jubilee Chairman Mike Joy and North Kerry Board Chairman Joe Walsh. Ger Doyle North Kerry Board P.R.O. was also a special guest on the night. Special presentations were made to Tom McGrath, Mike Slattery & John Paul Leahy and to representatives of Moss Joe Browne, Vincent Linnane, Tom Joe O'Connor, John Sugrue, John Walsh, Martin Whelan and Pat Whelan for the various important roles they performed for the Club over the years. Photographs were taken of the players who attended that formed part of the 1966 North Kerry Championship Winning Team and the 1976, 1996, 1997 and 2008 County Championship Winning Teams. Overall it was a night of nostalgia, where funny stories, yarns and recollections of games played, titles, won and lost, memories of hilarious Club Meetings held, etc, since 1965. Music was provided by Eddie Lee and DJ Eric McHale. Many thanks to the Jubilee Committee who performed trojan work in organising Saturday Night's Celebration. Here's to the next fifty years. The Club extends deepest sympathy to the family of the late Nellie Whelan who passed away on Sunday morning. May she Rest in Peace.

A total of 495 miles were clocked up as part of the project, carrying out interviews all over the County with many people who participated or are currently volunteers with community games. Nobody refused to give time to this team of talented, funny, easy going and total perfectionist. From Ministers Reilly and Deenihan, to Olympian Gillian O’Sullivan, Adam King, County Footballers Anthony Maher, Kieran Donaghy, James O Donoghue, Colm Cooper, Aidan O Mahoney, Paul Geaney, Eamon Fitzmaurice, Kerry Hurler Brian Murphy, Camogie player Sarah Murphy, Kerry Ladies footballer Lorraine Scanlon, past Community Games medal winners, participants, volunteers local and county wide both past and present and future medallists no stone was unturned by this team. Approximately 79 interviews were completed, 12 tubes of print stick, tonnes of card/paper and 300+ plastic pockets. A total of four books were on display – Interviews, Research, participation and how our table display was created. Each member of the team brought something different to the project, a very

talented artist and future person to watch out for Erin Welch brought a lot of the creativity to the team and if you see our display of Oltan alongside the cyclist nicknamed ‘Cathy with a tan’the words WOW will spring to mind. The team left the room happy on Friday looking forward to the twelve o clock start on Saturday. On Saturday the team were both relaxed and nervous but well up to sell all the work they had completed. In they went and twenty four minutes later they emerged smiling and very happy with the way they worked together. It was a long wait from there to five o clock when the results were posted over in the canteen section of Athlone IT, there was jubilation, tears, shocked faces and jumps for joy when the result showed that Kerry, Duagh/Lyre had won the gold medals. This was the icing on the cake for the team and showed that hard work and determination do pay off. A great end result but this was not the end the team were back into the project room where they were again judged for the best overall project, the winners in this were U11 Wicklow. Our team have learned great life skills which will stand to them in the future. Well done to Caoimhe Harte, Debbie Marie Woulfe, Erin Welch and Mark Bambury Lawson with four gold medals returning to Duagh/Lyre. Project Manager: Liz Twomey. This will be displayed in Duagh so we will keep you posted. Athletics: First up was Gavin Dillon in the U8 60m Gavin was unlucky not to qualify finishing fifth and narrowly losing out on fourth place. Gavin then went through to the B Final on Sunday were he ran a very impressive and strong race in very wet conditions. Gavin finished second and a beautiful silver medal in the bag. This was a first experience of Community games for Gavin and he did us and all his family very proud. Next up was Saoirse Dillon in the u8 80m, in the heats Saoirse ran impressively and finished a strong second. On Sunday Saoirse was up in the semi-final and won this race comfortably. With a few hours to recover before the final and the rain easing off Saoirse was in lane 5 and got off to a cracking start and into the lead and it was from there she stayed until she passed the finish line with a loud cheer from her supporters and the coveted gold medal grasped in her hand, a fantastic end to a great year. Well done Saoirse we are so proud of you. Up in the U14 100m was Amanda Tony, Amanda was very comfortable on Saturday and very relaxed before her race. In the heats Amanda finished third and earned a well-deserved place in the semi-final. On Sunday Amanda was on in the morning in the semi-final running well but narrowly losing out to qualify in the first four - Amanda finished fifth. Well done Amanda this was your second trip to Athlone in two weeks both participating in both U15 futsal and athletics and returning with a silver medal, well done and keep up the hard work. It has been an amazing National Community Games Finals competition over two weekends, without all the volunteers this would not be possible. Well done to all our participants a total of 22 in total from Duagh/Lyre returning with 21 National Medals - five gold, ten silver and six pewter. Two sets of sisters taking part Ella and Grace Morris, Caoimhe and Aoibhinn Harte, first cousins Gavin and Saoirse Dillion and a massive achievement for our parish. Well done to all and keep the flag flying for Community Games, County and parish. Thanks to Nelius Collins, Andy and Liz Keane for all the help to our teams participating in Athlone. Nelius we think you are running on empty but still keep going and it was very evident in Athlone in the esteem you are held in by other counties and members of National community games. The Earliest appearance of Listowel in available written documents is in the Plea roll of 1303-04 as Listokill. It first appears as Lios Tuathail in the Annals of the Four Masters under the years 1582. The town of Listowel developed out from the Castle which was situated beside the River Feale. One of Listowel’s most distinguished features is its magnificent market Square. Originally designed in the 1820/1840s it is reputed to be modelled on Convent Garden, London. The Current layout of the Square is similar to Larkin map of 1810, however, it was redeveloped in the 1990s by Listowel Town Council. Several Georgian Houses envelop The Square, some of these were the homes at one time of:• Bertha Beatty (nee Creagh), author of ‘Kerry Memories’ lived at Ivy House & No. 24 which now houses the Kerry Writers’ Museum at the Seanchaí Centre. • George Sandes lived at Bridge Road, side of the Square. • The O’Rahilly Family, including Celtic Scholars and celebrated academics - Thomas, Cecile and Alfred. • Three Bank Buildings • Misc. other gentry of the 19th Century & 20th Century as well as commercial buildings. Some public buildings of note in the Square are: LISTOWEL CASTLE – This 15th century Castle overlooking The Square was built as a fortress by the Anglo Norman Earls of Kerry, the Fitzmaurices. The present Castle stands on a steep bank overlooking the river Feale, above the location of a strategic ford and it probably extended close to the river’s edge. Much of the Castle has now gone, however, one end of the structure does survive consisting of two square towers of four-storeys standing connected by a wall and linked by an arch at high level. One of the earliest references to the castle in Listowel is in 1549, when it was recorded that Thomas Fitzmaurice, the 16th Lord of Kerry, died there. During the Desmond Rebellions of 1579-83 the Fitzmaurices were at arms against the crown. In 1592 following the growing threat of the successes of the queens troops Patrick Fitzmaurice, the 17th. Lord of Kerry ordered the destruction of Lixnaw, Listowel, Beale and Ballybunion all estates in his ownership, presumably to prevent them falling into the hands of the English. Following his father’s death Thomas Fitzmaurice continued the struggle against the English forces in his resistance of the subjugation of Munster by Sir George Carew. By 1600 Listowel was the only fortification in the possession of the Fitzmaurices and became the focus of attack. On 17th. November 1600 English forces, led by Sir Charles Wilmot, marched on Listowel Castle and laid siege to it.

2

By 1687 the castle had evidently returned to use more as a dwelling than a strategic fortress. An account of it in that year describes is as being ‘decayed’. In 1803 the Knights of Kerry sold their estates in Kerry, including Listowel, to Richard Hare of the City of Cork.

Listowel Castle was renovated by the Office of Public Works in 2005 and is now open to the public for guided tours during the summer. SEANCHAI - Kerry Literary and Cultural Centre – Housed in a 19th century Georgian residence adjacent to Listowel Castle, the Seanchai Centre featured an interactive audio-visual museum on the great writers of North Kerry - John B. Keane, Bryan MacMahon, Brendan Kennelly, Maurice Walsh and George Fitzmaurice. The house itself dates back to the 1820s when it was built by local solicitor John Fitzgerald who was land agent for Lord Listowel.

A multi-purpose Cultural Centre to the rear of the museum was built on the site of the stable attached to the house. This incorporates a performance area, book/craft shop, restaurant, archival library and reading area. Activities throughout the year include traditional music & singing sessions, visual art exhibitions, literary workshops, lectures & readings, and children’s activities. The entire Complex is wheelchair accessible. The Seanchai Centre was officially opened in 2001. ST. JOHN’S THEATRE & ARTS CENTRE - A former Church of Ireland Gothic style church, located in the centre of the newly developed Town Square. In 1814 the site for this church was presented to the community by Lord Listowel. It was designed by a Cork architect, named Payne and it is believed that the stone used to build St. Johns was taken from the ruins of Listowel Castle. It was used by the faithful of North Kerry as a place of worship from 1819 until its deconsecration in 1988. The Church of Ireland community and the people of Listowel were anxious to preserve the building and make it a centre for local cultural activities and heritage. It now houses a Theatre & Arts Centre and Tourist Office. St. John's Theatre & Arts Centre features and annual programme of performances including theatre, music and dance, exhibitions and educational programmes and an annual summer school. St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church - Built in 1829, St. Mary’s Church is centrally situated in the Square and its spire and porch were added in 1865. The side aisles were added in 1910. In line with reforms that followed Vatican II, much of the old altar was removed and the pulpit taken out. Local folklore has a story that Lord Listowel prevailed upon the clergy to ring the Angelus bell at 7.00 p.m. so that he could get an extra hours work from his men. LISTOWEL ARMS HOTEL – This boutique style hotel has been a fixture in the corner of The Square since the late 17th century. The Victorian writer W.M.Thackerey recommended the hotel in his 1843 Irish Sketchbook. It has hosted many famous visitors including Daniel O’Connell and Charles Stewart Parnell, who is said to have addressed a large political rally from one of the windows telling the people of Listowel and surrounding North Kerry that "no man has the right to set a boundary to the march of a Nation". It was also owned for a brief period in the 1960s by acclaimed Irish tenor Josef Locke.

THE LISTOWEL ARMS HOTEL

A proud tradition in a tranquil corner of The Square

The Listowel Arms Hotel is housed in the Original Historic Inn which dates back to 1790. A plaque on the wall hints only briefly at the eventful history of the Listowel Arms. The Liberator himself, Daniel O’Connell, was here. It was also here that another political giant Charles Stewart Parnell, coined his famous exhortation: ”Let no man set a boundary to the march of a nation!” But these are just instances of the many great names and the countless encounters that these rooms have witnessed over two centuries. The sense of tradition is palpable.

The tradition of service is also rich. As long ago as 1842 the Victorian writer W.M.Thackeray recommended the place. Another commentator, Richard Colt-Hoare, in 1865, described the Arms as ‘one of the best in Ireland’. Originally owned by the Adams Family whose only daughter married Gerald McElligott in 1854, the hotel was then owned by the McElligott family for 100 years until their grandson Gerald Jr McElligott sold the Inn to the famous tenor Joseph Locke in 1954 who changed the name to the “White Horse Inn”. Several other owners came and went before the Bernard O’Callaghan bought the building and set on a mission to restore the building in keeping with its Georgian heritage. It has been restored with love by the O’Callaghan family over the last 20 years.

ST. JOHN'S THEATRE & ARTS CENTRE

In 1988 a local voluntary committee began the transformation of the then Church of Ireland building into what is now St. John's Theatre & Arts Centre. The restoration project, costing £250,000 Ir, was completed in 1990. Theatre, Music, Dance & Visual Arts Since then St. John's has become a premier venue in the South West for the promotion of a monthly programme of Visual and Performing Arts, featuring the best local, national and international product in Theatre, Music, Dance and Exhibitions. Annually St. John's hosts approximately 160 Arts events comprising of 80 Theatre presentations, 60 Music/Dance events and 20 Exhibitions. Education Programme Youth performance workshops in Drama, Music, Contemporary Dance and Traditional Arts cater for approximately 150 Primary and Post Primary Students weekly during the school year. A drama and summer school runs from July and August each year.

NOONDAY by Pat Barker

In Noonday, Pat Barker - the Man Booker-winning author of the definitive WWI trilogy, Regeneration - turns for the first time to WWII. 'Afterwards, it was the horses she remembered, galloping towards them out of the orange-streaked darkness, their manes and tails on fire...' London, the Blitz, autumn 1940. As the bombs fall on the blacked-out city, ambulance driver Elinor Brooke races from bomb sites to hospitals trying to save the lives of injured survivors, working alongside former friend Kit Neville, while her husband Paul works as an air-raid warden. Once fellow students at the Slade School of Fine Art, before the First World War destroyed the hopes of their generation, they now find themselves caught in another war, this time at home. As the bombing intensifies, the constant risk of death makes all three of them reach out for quick consolation. Old loves and obsessions re-surface until Elinor is brought face to face with an almost impossible choice. Completing the story of Elinor Brooke, Paul Tarrant and Kit Neville, begun with Life Class and continued with Toby's Room, Noonday is both a stand-alone novel and the climax of a trilogy. Writing about the Second World War for the first time, Pat Barker brings the besieged and haunted city of London into electrifying life in her most powerful novel since the Regeneration trilogy.

ASDEE GAA

CLUB FUNDRAISER. Asdee GAA in association with Kerry Respite Care will be holding their Half Marathon and 10km road race on Saturday September 12th at the earlier time of 10pm.. The event will also incorporate a 5km fun run/walk. All the routes will start & finish at the grounds of Asdee GAA, Jack Walsh Memorial Park, Tullahinell. There will be chip & pin timing for all runners in the Half/Marathon and 10km runs which will allow the competitors to measure their times. The event is open to all runners of any age or fitness level and from any county but we will also be expecting a number of competitive athlethes particularly for the Half-marathon and 10km races. It is AAI permited and there will be medals for all finishers in our 5km, 10km and Half-Marathon races. Full details in this column in next weeks edition of the Kerryman. COUNTY LEAGUE: Just 3 games remain in the 2015 Credit Union County League Division 5 and it’s a must win situation on all those games and even at that it would need other results to go our way. Still it has been a very successful league campaign but the only disappointment was on a number of occasions games were lost by the narrowest of margins probably not having their shooting boots on. However its still all to play for and most certainly the Management team of John Kennedy, Dan Dalton and Sean Doran who have done tremendous work achieving glory at both County and Munster level and they will leave no stone unturned in the quest for promotion to Division 4.

CHAMPIONSHIP DRAW. The Draw for the Mc Munns, Bernard O Callaghan Senior Football Championship 2015 and Cup competitions will take place in Mc Munns Bar and Restaurant Ballybunion on Friday 4th September @ 9pm Sharp. All clubs are asked to be in attendance. The local St. Marys, Asdee will be entering the draw along with 13 other clubs.

UNDER 21 COUNTY: Its amazing when three clubs enter a competition as did Beale/Bally/Asdee who joined forces and yet failed to field 15 players. (Asdee having 6 players ready to go) On last Wednesday evening this County Under 21 club championship due to take place at Stack Park, Ballybunion against Austin Stacks failed to go ahead for reasons unknown. Pulling out of a County competition ; (if that’s the case) is just not good enough as when all we hear from clubs and players; is there is no football to be played. Lads plenty football; go out and play.
