CALL IN TO SEE THE NEW LOOK MEADOWLANDS

The Judges For The East River Best Dressed Man Competition Listowel Races 2015 are Fiona O’Connor and Ita Lyons Judges for East River's Best Dressed Man Competition at Listowel Races on Thursday 17th September are Fiona O'Connor and Ita Lynn from Killarney. Both were very prominent in the successful Gleneagle TV series shown recently on RTE, Fiona is the Entertainment Manager and Ita is Accommodation Manager. "We're delighted to be the sponsor of such an exciting event." Commented Pat Lyons, of East River, Mens, Ladies and Home Interior Store, in Listowel. Last Year we were very fortunate to have former Kerry Rose, Mary Hickey as the judge for the competition, it proved very successful. The Winner received €1,000 towards his nominated charity and in this case Dan O'Leary from Tralee donated the prize to Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation. Previous charities that have benefited were Recovery Haven, Tralee, and Pieta House, Listowel. This year's competition should be interesting, as Fiona and Ita will have to select approx. 50 Sharp Dressed Men from a packed racing course, then select three finalists and mutually argee on the ultimate winner, sounds like it will be a lot of fun. "Sharp Dressed Men is what the judges will be looking for, suit and jackets, classic or casual, ties or bow ties are strongly recommended" commented Pat Lyons of East River. The Best Dressed Man competition has been permanently changed to the Thursday of the Races as well, hopefully giving two days of back-toback fashion. East River have sponsored the competition to the tune of €1,200. For further details see facebook/eastriver

Meadowlands Hotel Tralee has undergone an exciting transformation and we’re inviting you to call in to see what we’ve done to the place. Are you heading to the Harvest Festival at Listowel? It’s one of Ireland’s top racing events each year and Tralee is excellent for dining and accommodation throughout the seven-day festival. Before you set-off, here are some top tips for punters from our ‘racing experts’ at Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee:

• Have a good breakfast to set you up for a day racing. • There is no dress code in Irish racing so you can dress up or dress down, shirt and tie, slacks, old dress, new dress, hat or not, jeans and t-shirt, it doesn't matter, just go. But if you are looking for a chance to show off that new outfit there are prizes for the best-dressed lady (and sometimes man) at most major meetings and, at the festival meetings, a designated ladies day. • Before leaving home, (well it is Ireland!) it's a good idea to check the weather forecast for the day! September is often a warm month, but don’t get caught out if it rains! Bring a brolly and comfortable clothes. Of course, if it’s Ladies Day, dress to impress!! • Pick up your daily paper which will have all the racing news and information you will need and remember, the internet is packed with racing sites. A visit to www.goracing.ie will give you all the upcoming race-cards and results, an intro to every Irish racecourse, breaking news and special offers. • Check the form of the various runners and riders of the day in the newspapers or online • Having a bet is part of the enjoyment of the day and it adds to the excitement of watching the races. The beauty of betting is that you don't have to invest much money to have a great day out. You can spend as little as €1 on the Jackpot or Placepot, which, if you get lucky could net you thousands of Euro. • Does a horse give a Bunny Hop in the Parade Ring? If it gives what is called a “bunny hop”: a small buck when the jockey jumps up, it signifies that it is feeling really well and in good form. If you see a horse do that, back it (at your own risk!) • Come to The Meadolands for the evening to reminisce about your day at the Races and to plan ahead or the next day’s fun! Stay, Dine, Meet and Party in style at Meadowlands Hotel, Oakpark, Tralee, Co Kerry. Call +353 66 718 0444, email info@meadowlandshotel.com or visit www.meadowlandshotel.com..”

GO KREAMY IN KERRY!!

“WRAPPED IN GREEN AND GOLD”

Johnny Lane here from Pilgrim Hill, Kilmorna, Duagh has made his debut into the world of music recording with his song ‘Wrapped in Green and Gold’, which was launched by Sean Walsh on Tuesday night at Christy’s The Well in Listowel. There was a huge crowd and CD sales were unbelievable. Pictured at the launch were Seamus Regan from Kilmoyley, Johnny Lane and Sean Walsh.

Johnny explained why he decided to record it. “On the 19th December last year my wife Mairead was diagnosed with Lymphoma. and she had to get Chemotherapy in Cork Bons from Jan – Aug this year. It was a very tough Christmas and New Year as she faced into Chemotherapy treatment at the end of January. Thankfully she has had a positive outcome in the past few weeks after scans and tests etc.”

She got great support from Cunamh Cancer Support Group in Cork Bons throughout all this time. They provide meals and refreshments every week to all patients who travel from Kerry and beyond for treatment. They also provide transport for anyone in financial difficulty. It’s a long drive to Cork at the best of times besides having to face the thought of Chemo or Radium after getting there.”

Joanna McCarthy of Sundaes Icecream Parlour Ballybunion, which is featured in this weeks RTE guide. Sundaes got rave reviews in the travel section on 10 of the best icecream parlours in Ireland, with specific emphasis on their delicious homemade icecream, knickerbocker glories and hot doughnuts made to order, as they say "a slice of confectionery heaven." NEW LAW IS GOOD NEWS FOR VICTIMS OF BURGLARY – Cllr. Mike Kennelly

Fine Gael Councillor, Mike Kennelly, has welcomed the publication of the Criminal Justice (Burglary of Dwellings) Bill 2015, saying it will provide comfort to victims of home burglaries in North Kerry.

Johnny who has never written a song before described how at home one day and the words “Wrapped in Green and Gold” appeared out of nowhere. He sat down and wrote the first two verses in no time at all followed by the Chorus. “We recorded the song at Eddie Lees studios in Ballyheigue and I honestly think he has done a fantastic job in arranging the music. So Its fingers crossed and hopefully people will like it and more importantly all proceeds go to Cunamh Cancer Support Group in the Cork Bons for all the help they have given to Mairead and many more over the years. The CD is reasonably priced at €5. The lyrics are as follows:

Well tradition’s hard to beat; Kerry plays it fast and neat It’s a part of what makes up our Kerry soul Every woman; every man; plays a part in Kerry’s plan. We long to see the Kingdom reign once more

Chorus:

This new Bill is targeted at those repeat burglars who have previous convictions and who are charged with multiple offences,” Mikey explained.

“I also welcome the allocation of €700,000 to An Garda Siochana for the purchase of specialist vehicles, which will support the Gardaí in tacking highly-mobile criminal gangs, including those involved in burglaries. “This new Bill is designed to keep repeat burglars off the streets and to improve the safety of our communities. Home should be everyone’s sanctuary and I am confident that this new Bill will impact positively on the number incidents of burglary into the future.”

8

We’ll support our Green and Gold with a passion pure and bold As old friends and I head up for Jones’ road. With passing years our dreams won’t dim. Sure the Kingdoms here to win. Cause we’ve spent our life wrapped up in Green and Gold. Ard na Bhothair lost its King and a void is left within But his memory will endure for evermore What a sight for young and old when Paidí wore the Green and Gold ‘twas worn with pride by Gaeltacht’s bravest son.

“Garda statistics show that 75% of burglaries are committed by the same 25% of burglars, which prove that sufficient deterrents to have not been in place before now.

“The new Bill will mean that where a burglar is being sentenced for multiple offences, the District Court will impose consecutive jail sentences. This new law will also allow the courts to refuse bail for offenders who have a previous conviction for domestic burglary, coupled with two or more pending charges.

We trained hard like all the rest, had dreams to be the best. Had hopes one day we’d wear the Green and Gold. Then bad luck and injury, put paid to our young dreams. And ended thoughts of wearing Green and Gold.

Chorus:

Chorus:

Fourteen was such a thrill as we gazed down from the Hill When they toppled Donegal with heart and style A new record had been done, 37 titles won Our Kingdom boys had captured Sam Maguire Our Munster title’s was retained after drama and replay. Then an epic with Tyrone filled us with pride The players know the score and they’re hungry for one more So it’s on for 38 at Jones Road. With passing years our dreams won’t dim. Sure the Kingdoms here to win. Cause we’ve spent our life wrapped up in Green and Gold. Yes we’ll dream that Sam is wrapped, We feel sure that Sam is wrapped, Come September Sam is wrapped in Green and Gold.

The CD is for sale in various locations in Duagh, Moyvane, Tarbert and Listowel

WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY

World Suicide Prevention Day is held each year on the 10th of September. It's an annual awareness raising event organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). This year's theme is ‘Preventing Suicide: Reaching out and saving lives’. The team in the HSE’s National Office for Suicide Prevention is encouraging people to consider the role that offering support may play in helping to prevent suicide. The act of showing care and concern to someone who may be vulnerable to suicide can make a big difference in their lives. Asking them whether they are OK, listening to what they have to say in a non-judgmental way, and letting them know you care, can all have a significant impact. Anne O'Connor, HSE National Director of Mental Health, said today “The first goal of ‘Connecting for Life’, Ireland’s suicide prevention strategy, is to improve the nation’s understanding of suicidal behaviour, mental health and well-being. All around the country in cities, towns and villages there are events and activities organised to raise awareness and understanding of the issue of suicide and how to prevent it. The key theme of this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day is about understanding and recognising the impact that reaching out to people can have in helping to prevent suicide.”

Kerry has the second highest rate of death by suicide in the country according to the Central Statistics Office. In 2009 there were 29 suicides and in 2012, the worst year on record, suicide claimed 32 lives in the county. In that period, Kerry had the highest suicide rate in Ireland with the average rate of 18.5 eclipsing even the major cities. A slight drop, to 28, followed in 2013 but last year, for reasons that remain unclear, the rate, while still tragically high, suddenly returned to 2008 levels. In Kerry, men are five times more likely to die by suicide than women. There are a number of factors that can have a significant bearing on suicidal behavior such as unemployment, poverty, substance abuse and isolation. Reducing the stigma and raising awareness around suicide is an ongoing challenge and the HSE have launched a national campaign, Little Things to help in promoting positive mental health. Suicide Prevention is everyone’s business and it is important that we reach out and connect with one another. A list of some of the events happening in Kerry and a list of some of the services available for those who need help are included below.

Are you, or someone you know, in crisis? In a crisis (when someone might harm themselves, harm someone else, or is vulnerable to suicide) it is important to get help as quickly as you can for yourself or the person you are concerned about. You can get professional help through: A General Practitioner, Hospital emergency services, H.S.E. Mental health services, Listening service such as the Samaritans. You might need to try a few options before you find appropriate support but don’t give up trying – there is help available. If possible, ask someone to come along with you to the support service you contact. When someone tells you they are suicidal or at risk of self harm. When someone tells you they are thinking of taking their own life, it is frightening. There are practical things you can do right away...

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT LISTOWEL 7 DAY HARVEST FESTIVAL

The following is the Traffic Management Plan to cater for Listowel Races commencing Sunday, 13th September Saturday, 19th September 2015 incl. Patrons attending are strongly advised to park in car parks available at the following Racecourse locations: Greenville (entrance off Grenville Road), Greenville (entrance off Convent Street), Tralee (entrance off the N69- Listowel-Tralee road) and Barrett’s Field (entrance off Bridge Road, Listowel). Parking is also available in Listowel town car parks and parking restrictions will be in place in residential areas of the town. Illegally parked vehicles will be towed and a fee will be occasioned. Fixed penalty notices will be issued in respect of aforementioned violations. Motorists are requested to give care, courtesy and consideration to other road users. 1. Listowel Town It is envisaged that traffic related problems will occur when large volumes of traffic converge upon junctions within close proximity to and in the immediate vicinity of the racecourse. Non race traffic should where possible divert away from routes used by motorists attending Race Meetings on each Race Day. All streets are open to traffic at all times. 2. Ballybunion Traffic Traffic approaching Listowel town from the direction of Ballybunion may park in the Greenville area (N.B. Not on the Greenville Road) and may also enter the Race Course car park via the Convent Street entrance. Parking is also permitted on the Ballybunion Road, Railway Road and John B. Keane Road. 3. Tarbert Traffic Traffic approaching the town from the Tarbert direction can park on the John B. Keane Road, in the Bridge Road car park and in the Race Course car park off Convent Street. All car parks are free. Traffic from the Tarbert direction going to Tralee will be joining the traffic coming from Abbeyfeale and Duagh at Listowel Bridge. Serious delays can expected in this area, particularly from mid week onwards. Every effort will be made to keep delays to a minimum. The implementation of a one way system into the racecourse from the Tralee Road entrance will help in this regard - two lanes of traffic entering the Race Course. 4. Greenville Traffic approaching the Greenville entrance from the direction of Lixnaw, Ballyduff and Tralee will be required to use available parking off the Greenville Road and the race course Car park at Greenville. Parking along either side of the Greenville Road will not be permitted.

Remove access - Remove access to any means of suicide or self harm– such as medicines, a rope, etc.

Road closures are not envisaged; however temporary access restrictions to Greenville Road from Convent Cross may be necessary so as to facilitate traffic exiting from the Racecourse. In the evening time, access may be restricted to some streets as part of the Harvest Festival; however this will cause minimum disruption.

Contact emergency services - Go to or contact the Emergency Department of your nearest general hospital. Hospitals are listed on the HSE.ie online service finder. You can also contact the emergency services by calling 999 or 112 if you or someone else has harmed themselves or taken an overdose.

Superintendent Daniel Keane, Listowel Garda Station has requested that all patrons attending the Races comply with Garda & Race Steward requests. This is to ensure the smooth running of the event and the safety of all patrons attending the races.

Stay with them - Stay with them while you’re making contact with the services listed above. Do not leave them on their own. Go with them to get help - Once you have contacted the services, go with them to their appointment. Find out more about accompanying someone to the health services

ASKING FOR IT by Louise O’Neill

It's the beginning of the summer in a small town in Ireland. Emma O'Donovan is eighteen years old, beautiful, happy, confident. One night, there's a party. Everyone is there. All eyes are on Emma. The next morning, she wakes on the front porch of her house. She can't remember what happened, she doesn't know how she got there. She doesn't know why she's in pain. But everyone else does. Photographs taken at the party show, in explicit detail, what happened to Emma that night. But sometimes people don't want to believe what is right in front of them, especially when the truth concerns the town's heroes

Jim Corridan Tournament We celebrated our 11th Annual Jim Corridan Tournament on Saturday and Sunday last. Our Junior Tournament was won by Tarbert and the Plate Final was won by St. Senan's. On Sunday our Tournament kicked off at 10am with 8 teams participating Canovee of Cork, Tarbert, Beale, Moyvane, Emmets girls and Emmets u9 and u10 teams. After 3 rounds of some mighty football the D final was contested between Emmets u9s and Emmets Girls, the C Final took place between Emmets u10s and Beale with Beale victorious. The B Final was a hotly contested affair between Tarbert and Canovee with the cork side emerging as winners. The A final was a great game of football from u10s with Moyvane eventually coming out on top against Ballyduff. A huge than you to everyone that attended and thanks especially to all the ladies that helped out in the Kitchen over the two days and also to our referees PJ Kelliher, Patsy McCarthy, DJ Mulvihill and Sean Moriarty and finally to Mikey Kennelly for co-ordinating.

U14s: Emmets U14s and Ballyduff played out a fourteen goal thriller in Ballybunion on Friday night last and at the final whistle nothing could separate the sides on a score line of 7-10 a piece and after such a display wouldn’t it be wonderful to play it all over again. We are awaiting the replay date from the ccc of North Kerry Board.

ASDEE GAA

CHAMPIONSHIP DRAW. All club delegates within the North Kerry Football Board were in attendance at McMunns Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion who are sponsors of the North Kerry Senior Football Championship on Friday night last. All eyes were on the Senior Championship draw for the Bernard O Callaghan Memorial and Eamon O Donoghue Memorial Cup as Board President Jerry Brosnan, Moyvane made the draw, Certainly it threw up some very exciting contests and none more so than Asdee v Ballylongford which is sure to be the big talking point within the parish leading up to the game. Last year champions Beale are at home to Ballyduff, Finuge must travel to Listowel Emmets, Desmonds entertain Duagh, St. Senans have home advantage against Tarbert and Moyvane take on Brosna at Brosnan Park. Two byes went to Knocknagoshel and Ballydonoghue. Exciting times ahead.

COUNTY LEAGUE: The County League Division 5 game between Asdee and Duagh down for decision on Sunday last at Walsh Park failed to go ahead. The result of this contest will now be decided by the C C C of the County Board. HALF MARATHON: The local St. Marys, Asdee GAA in association with Kerry Respite Care will be holding their Fundraising Half Marathon and 10km road race and which will also incorporate a 5km fun run/walk on this Saturday September 12th with a starting time of 10am. All the routes will start and finish at the grounds of Asdee GAA, Jack Walsh Memorial Park. A huge crown is expected to be in attendance and if last years event is anything to go by this will be another exciting day for the club.

NORTH FINAL: All roads will lead to O Rahilly Park, Ballylongford on this Saturday evening for the long awaited North Kerry League Division 2 Final between Moyvane and Asdee. Certainly Moyvane will carry the favourites tag into this encounter and rightly so as they have impressed in all their games and especially in the County League where they stand in line to be promoted to Division 4. The clubs have already been in action earlier in the year with Asdee having an impressive victory in the North Kerry League but the roles were reversed in the County League when a late goal saw the Newtownsandes men grab victory. However since those clashes Moyvane have their former County attacking star Patrick Curtin back in action which will be a huge addition to what is really a youthful squad. Add in Timmy Noonan, Brian Stack and Con Mulvihill who will take a lot of watching. Donal Leahy can be an imposing figure at midfield while in defence Denis Kennelly, Eoin Stack and Shane Stack can make life difficult for any attack.. Still Asdee will not be going in to battle to make up the numbers as they too have quality players in their ranks. Noel Long, Eoin O Carroll and Martin Collins will form a teak tough defence while at midfield if John Doran, Padraig Ruddle can turn it on this could be very well the trump card providing a plentiful supply of ball to a swift moving forward line that includes. Eoin Kennedy, Darragh Keane, Mike Breen and Eoin (Bomber) Tydings. But besides all those already mentioned it could very well be other members of the sides that could very well sway the issue in either clubs favour. To sum up it promises to be close contest and is sure to attract a huge following to O Rahilly Park.

NORTH KERRY LEAGUE: Asdee/Bally have qualified for the North Kerry League Div 2 Minor final and must now await their opponents which will be either; Knock/Brosna or St. Senans who are involved in a play-off. The final has been fixed for Sunday September 13th with a venue to be confirmed..

R EB E L F I TZ TH E B I LL F OR G U IN N E S S KE R R Y NA T IO NA L Rebel Fitz heads the weights for next week’s Guinness Kerry National, the feature event of the seven-day Listowel Harvest Festival. The 10-year-old is trained by Michael Winters and he reports the son of Agent Bleu to be in great shape after a fine comeback effort at Galway last month. “He is in great form and has come out of Galway spectacularly well. If I said that we had left something to work on going to Galway, I’d be only praising myself, but he hadn’t been out much over the summer and we were minding him,” said Winters. “His coat has turned inside out and the race at Galway was like a practice match for him and his mind is great. We are very happy where we are with him now. He’ll have top weight and it won’t be easy to give weight away, but we’d be hoping that he’ll get into the money,” he added. With Davy Russell out injured, Winters has yet to confirm riding arrangements but he said, “Out of courtesy to Barry Geraghty, he’ll be offered the ride again, but I’d say he’ll have to ride for his boss, JP McManus. There are loads of top-class riders around that we can choose from and he is a straightforward horse to ride.” Rebel Fitz is one of 42 horses that have been entered for this year’s race and Paul Nicholls could be represented by Valco De Touzaine, a three-time winner and the six-year-old posted a fine effort last month at Newton Abbot, when runner-up to Standing Ovation. Willie Mullins has pencilled in no fewer than seven horses for next week’s showpiece, while last year’s first and second, Your Busy and Pass The Hat, will represent James Nash and Arthur Moore respectively. Nash said, “All my horses are in great form and I just hope he gets in – it might be tight. He worked great last Friday and I know he is twelve, but he works like a six-year-old. Going into the race last year, his form was a bit in and out, but he has had a much better season this year and Katie Walsh will ride him again. He loves a bit of nice ground and with the way weather is at the minute, he might get that next week.” Rule The World, who slipped up when in with every chance in the thetote.com Galway Plate, could be one of four runners for Mouse Morris, who has also entered Ravished, Horendus Hulabaloo and Rogue Angel. “I’ll run whatever I can get in. None of them are too ground dependant and they all seem to be in good form,” reported Morris. Noel O’Brien, Senior National Hunt Handicapper, said: “This year’s entries for the Guinness Kerry National will make for a competitive renewal of this very strong handicap. Top weight at a racing rate of 153, Rebel Fitz is a hugely consistent chaser and with plenty of high-class handicappers sprinkled through the field, should make for another great race.” John McGuire, Chairman of Listowel Racecourse said: “With less than a week to go to the start of our festival, the track is in tip-top shape and there is a great buzz around Kerry. We are delighted with the quality of entries for the Guinness Kerry National which marks the start of the National Hunt season proper.

Pictured at the North Kerry Championship draws were left to right: Una Ryan Sponsor Mc Munns, Billy Enright Chariman, Gerry Brosnan N.K. President, Greg Ryan Sponsor aMc Munns, Mairead O Sullivan Secretary.

“This year the total prize-money over the seven days is €1.2 million, up €150,000 on 2014, and in addition to the racing there is an extensive range of free entertainment, including the Kerry Group Family Day on Sunday, McElligotts Honda Ladies Day on Friday, daily racecard draws with cash prizes, promotions and live music in the enclosures after racing.”

THANKSGIVING Grateful thanks to Our Lady, St. Martin and The Sacred Heart that my prayers were answered. KOC

MIRACULOUS INVOCATION TO SAINT THERESA, THE LITTLE FLOWER

O Glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and inspire the human family, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the Heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you 'Prodigy of Miracles... the Greatest Saint of Modern Times.' Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention here) and to carry out your promises of spending Heaven doing good on earth...of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Little Flower, give me your childlike faith, to see the Face of God in the people and experiences of my life, and to love God with full confidence. St. Therese, my Carmelite Sister, I will fulfill your plea 'to be made known everywhere' and I will continue to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen. T.M.

Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God; Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity (Mention your request here) There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer in your hands (3 times). Amen. This prayer is never known to fail and is to be said for 3 consecutive days. Publication on granting of the favour must be promised and done. CC

THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.O.B.
