SUPPORTING SAFER COMMUNITIES
The primary objective of this “Supporting Safer Communities” campaign, 22nd to 26th September, will be to engage and raise awareness within our communities of initiatives aimed at preventing crime, reducing the fear of crime and promoting community safety during the Autumn/Winter months.
Listowel Gardai will be doing a number of leaflet drops around the town during the week. We will be speaking to an Active Retirement group and other voluntary groups within the North Kerry Area. There will also be leaflet drops in the Ballybunion area during the week. Superintendent Daniel Keane invites all The Advertiser’s readers to do the “Checklist Challenge” this is a simple home security challenge that can be taken in the privacy of your own home by logging into www.garda.ie. I would advise and recommend you to go into this website and click on the security / crime prevention advice / section which has real practicable tips that can assist you and help you secure your own property over the dark winter months. I would encourage those of you who have elderly neighbours to check in on them and do the “Checklist Challenge” on their behalf with their permission.
JOE AND NORA WIN UPCYCLED/VINTAGE FASHION DAY AT THE RACES
What a magical, wonderful day at Listowel Races at the Listowel Tidy Towns / An Taisce, Best Presentation of an Up-cycled / Re-styled / Authentic Vintage outfit. Now in its third year, this increasingly popular alternative and fun fashion event, encouraged so many stylish race goers of all ages, to re-visit their wardrobes (and attics) and up cycle some previously loved clothes and WOW us all with their creativity, stories and style. Judged by well known fashionista Orlagh Winters and Angela Wall from An Taisce, the event is organised by Kieran Moloney, Mary Hanlon and Imelda Murphy to highlight the potential of Waste Minimisation, in the imaginative re-use and up-cycling or re-styling of items previously discarded, including vintage fashion.
The overall winner in the ladies category was Nora Kearns Moriarty, who received €200 sponsored by Listowel Race Company. Nora wore a soft purple printed tweed cloak and matching hat she purchased almost 30 years ago, with an eye-catching yellow dress she originally made for her daughter’s communion. She completed her outfit with jewellery she originally had worn when she was a finalist in Listowel Ladies Day in the mid 1980’s and a beautiful clutch bag, which was her mothers and contained a ticket inside from a vending machine dated 25th of April 1936! The first runner up was Breda Fitzgerald in an maxi dress and matching headpiece she purchased in a vintage store in New York. Breda received a Clarins Hamper worth €100, kindly sponsored by Oonagh of Broderick’s Pharmacy, Listowel. Popular local gentlemen, Joe Broderick, won the top prize in the men’s category, wearing a new suit with a vintage hat and received a cash prize of €200 sponsored by McCarthy Brokers of Listowel. Paudi Moriarty was declared the first runner up, wearing a tie given to him by his late father and a very fashionable jacket from his older brother, and was awarded a Men’s Clarins Hamper by Oonagh of Broderick’s Pharmacy, Listowel.

Every team has an off day sometime and the conditions did not help but there was only a kick of a ball at the same time. DEATH Parishioners were saddened to learn of the death of William (Billy) Buckley, of Tarmons, on September 12, 2015. Billy passed away peacefully, at Kerry General Hospital, surrounded by his family. Tarbert has lost an outstanding community man and he will be missed by the various committees that he served on over the years. Billy an absolute gentleman, was always willing to put his shoulder to the wheel and was never one to shirk hard work. He was a wonderful family man and loved visiting his children and grandchildren. His visits to the elderly proved him to be a great neighbour and genuine friend. He was a man who really lived life to the full with a passion for music, dancing and swimming and was active in them right up to the week prior to his passing. William’s remains were removed from St. Mary’s Funeral Home, Tarbert, to St. Mary’s Church, Tarbert on Monday, September 14, at 12 noon, where requiem mass was concelebrated for the repose of his soul. William was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth and grand-daughter Rebecca, brothers; Arthur, Fr Tim and Fr Martin and is survived by his son Thomas, daughters; Maureen, BridgetAnne and Elizabeth, brother Authie, sisters Mary and Kitty, sonsin-law, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, relatives and a large circle of friends to whom our sincere sympathy is extended. Interment took place in the new section of St. Mary’s Cemetery, Tarbert. May He Rest in Peace! A special mention to our three Shannon Rangers players who now face Dingle in the semi-final of the minor county championship. While our senior team did not get the desired result the team and management must be thanked for all the efforts and the joy they have given us this season. It must also be acknowledged the contribution our own Shane Enright has given this season and more especially in the final where Shane became the first Tarbert senior player to start in the final – thank you Shane.

COISTE NA NOG Winter is truly closing in and with school started, there isn’t much left in the summer games. The Under-10 footballers were the only group in action last weekend, with all of the poor weather about. They made the trek to Limerick for four tough games in the dreadful conditions at the Mungret Blitz. Well done to the team and travelling supporters! Looking forward, the Under-8 hurlers are now scheduled to play in the re-fixed Tralee Parnells Blitz on Saturday 26th September in John Mitchell’s. Play starts at 10am so players should be ready at the pitches for 9.45am. Ballyduff Coiste na nOg would finally like to pass on congratulations to the Kerry Minor footballers as well as the Senior team on their terrific seasons. Both teams did their county proud in Croker and, only for a few bounces, could have brought both trophies back home for another year. As it turned out, we’re proud to be Minor All-Ireland champions for the second consecutive season. Well done, lads!

AFTER YOU by Jo Jo Moyes
Lou Clark has lots of questions. Like how it is she's ended up working in an airport bar, spending every shift watching other people jet off to new places. Or why the flat she's owned for a year still doesn't feel like home. Whether her close-knit family can forgive her for what she did eighteen months ago. And will she ever get over the love of her life. What Lou does know for certain is that something has to change. Then, one night, it does. But does the stranger on her doorstep hold the answers Lou is searching for - or just more questions? Close the door and life continues: simple, ordered, safe. Open it and she risks everything. But Lou once made a promise to live. And if she's going to keep it, she has to invite them in…

BEALE GAA
Senior game v Keel moved to Sunday at 2 o'clock. The long awaited County Minor League final replay against St Pats will take place on Saturday evening at 6 o'clock. It's almost 5 months since that wet wintry evening in Ballyduff when the teams ended up all square on 7 points apiece. Both teams served up some great football that evening despite the very poor playing conditions. Venue for Saturday's final yet to be confirmed. Beale Seniors have it all to play for in the County League, Division 3, when we travel to Keel on Sunday at 2 o'clock. Currently in the relegation zone, with six points, this is a vital game and two points here could throw us the all-important lifeline we need to fight to retain our divisional status this year. Our last game will be against St Patrick’s, Blennerville. Date yet to be confirmed.
