ASDEE GAA HALF MARATHON AND 10K FUNDRAISER
LISTOWEL SHOWCASES ITS RESOURCES IN PRIDE OF PLACE JUDGING
The judging for Listowel's nomination for the Pride of Place Award was held on Tuesday, September 1st. On the judges' brief visit, they were given a short presentation on Listowel before being brought on a tour of the Family Resource Centre and introduced to various Community and Sports groups that are active in the town. They walked through the Garden of Europe, taking in the park and Community Centre, before visiting the Lartigue Monorail Museum, where they were greeted by minister Jimmy Deenihan, and received by the local business community, attending a networking event at the venue. They enjoyed a journey on the Lartigue Monorail, before being brought back to the Square, where they visited St.John's Theatre, and finally the Seanchai, where they were treated to a scene from Big Maggie, a performance from young members of Listowel Comhaltas branch, including World Irish Dancing Champion, Sean Slemon, and met Cultural, Arts and Heritage groups from the town. Huge congratulations are in order, as Listowel came together to put itself forward as a truly worthy contender for the Pride of Place Award. Enormous thanks to all the groups, organisations, businesses and individuals that sent the judges away impressed.

In all over 200 athletes took part. This year it is expected that it will exceed all expectations with the amount of enquiries and entries received by the club. Proceedings will be getting underway at 10am sharp on Sat September 12th. All the routes will start & finish at the grounds of Asdee GAA, Jack Walsh Memorial Park. LISTOWEL RUGBY LOOKING TO DEVELOP NEW FACILITIES
Listowel RFC is embarking on a development programme to build new facilities for its rapidly growing membership in Listowel. The development committee have secured the use of lands at Castleinch in Listowel. The lands from Kerry Ingredients and Kerry Co Council are in an ideal location and Listowel RFC recognises the huge commitment these organisations are making. Listowel RFC are working with both to develop longer term plans for playing facilities on this site, which will also accommodate other sporting organisations in the town and have a strong community involvement. Listowel RFC will have a dedicated project manager working on this for the next 6 months. Discussions will take place with the landowners and all sporting organisations in the town for their input. We expect the project to be fully complete in 2018.
TARBERT TAKES LEAH’S PLIGHT TO HEART
The people of Tarbert have taken the plight of five year old Leah Carmody, who lives in New York, to heart. When our first public meeting was called, over fifty people turned up at Tarbert Community Centre, such is the concern people feel for Leah. Since the news broke recently that Leah faces a daunting medical journey in the months and years ahead, Tarbert people both at home and abroad have been actively trying to help raise funds to defray medical costs. Leah is a daughter of Michael (Tarbert, Co. Kerry) and Aileen nee McShane (Strabane, Co. Tyrone) who reside in New York, was hospitalized after taking what appeared to be a harmless tumble at school. Following routine testing it was discovered that Leah, who is 5 years old, had a brain tumour. This required a shunt to be inserted in her skull to relieve the pressure. She underwent two biopsies but suffered a stroke during this procedure which has affected her memory and leaving her partially paralysed.
Leah faces at least a year of chemotherapy and requires extensive physical and cognitive therapy. She will require special care for years to come. Medical expenses for Leah’s ongoing treatment will exceed $2 million dollars. Friday October 2nd will be a big night in Tarbert. All roads will lead to Carmody’s Bar where Leah’s grandparents, Michael and Nuala have run their pub on Chapel St for many decades. On that night Carmody’s Bar will host a Fun Video Race Night. A great night’s entertainment is assured. The Carmody Family are held in high esteem and it’s very natural that Tarbert people, people from all the surrounding communities in North Kerry and West Limerick and beyond want to support and help Michael and his wife Aileen as they continue to care for their daughter Leah in New York. In addition, Heaphy’s Centra in Ballylongford have kindly approached us with an offer to host a Coffee Morning on Saturday September 12th. Tarbert Community Centre are hosting a special Bingo Night on Wednesday September 23rd and Shannonside Women’s Group will hold a Clothes Collection on Thursday September 24th. Timmy Mackessy and Brendan Kissane will do a sponsored marathon in October. Soon we will have fundraising wristbands available. Please follow our facebook page: “Tarbert Fundraising for Leah Carmody Benefit”. We will be delighted if you would follow and share a good word about our fundraising events for such a worthy cause. If you wish to contact our committee please email us at: leahcarmody@hotmail.com If you’d like to donate online we would really appreciate your support. Donate online at this address: http://www.gofundme.com/tarbertleahcarmody .

FIXTURES; County Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi Final Lixnaw V Dr Crokes next Sunday Sept 6th @ 12.00pm. County Minor Hurling Championship Semi Final Lixnaw V Ballyduff/Causeway. Date and venue to be decided COUNTY SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP; Ardfert and Kilmoyley will contest the 2015 county senior hurling championship final. Kilmoyley had a 224 to 2-12 win over Ballyduff while Ardfert defeated Lixnaw 2-15 to 112, both games played in Abbeydorney. Lixnaw got off to a great start, a well taken Shane Conway goal helped Lixnaw to a 1-2 to 0-1 early lead. Ardfert began to come more into the game and a John Egan goal put them in front mid way through the half. The teams retired level pegging at half time, 1-7 apiece. Lixnaw resumed the second half without the influential John Griffin through injury. It was nip and tuck for a while but a fortuitous Ardfert goal in the fifty first minute changed the game dramatically. Lixnaws challenge faded as the game wore on while Ardfert remained firmly in the driving seat. Mike Conway had two late Lixnaw points but it was all too little too late at this stage and Ardfert finished worthy six point winners, a place in the final and good luck to them. Team; Martin Stackpoole, Ger Stackpoole, Trevor McKenna, Pat Corridan, Brendan Brosnan, Darragh Shanahan, Stephen Power, John Griffin, Michael Stackpoole, Shane Conway, Enda Galvin, John Buckley, James Flaherty, Michael Conway, Ricky Heffernan. Subs Used; Colin Sheehy, Raymond Galvin, Jeremy McKenna, Niall Quilter, Cathal McCarthy. Scorers: Mike Conway 1-9. Shane Conway 1-0, Enda Galvin 0-2, James Flaherty 0-1. Thanks and well done again to Abbeydorney GAA club, even though conditions were perfect, the field was top class and all went off without a hitch. Finally, while, both games were played in a very sporting manner unfortunately there were some injuries. I wish a speedy recovery to all players who were injured over the weekend, especially David O’Grady of Ballyduff and Tom Murnane, Kilmoyley who were both hospitalised following serious but accidental clashes. Wasn’t very nice to witness but hope all turns out well for both of them. KERRY MINOR HURLERS Good luck to the Kerry Minor Hurlers who travel to Limerick where they meet Roscommon in the All Ireland B championship final next Sat with a 2pm throw in time. THE LAST ACT OF LOVE by Cathy Rentzenbrink In the summer of 1990, Cathy's brother Matty was knocked down by a car on the way home from a night out. It was two weeks before his GCSE results, which turned out to be the best in his school. Sitting by his unconscious body in hospital, holding his hand and watching his heartbeat on the monitors, Cathy and her parents willed him to survive. They did not know then that there are many and various fates worse than death.
This is the story of what happened to Cathy and her brother, and the unimaginable decision that she and her parents had to make eight years after the night that changed everything. It's a story for anyone who has ever watched someone suffer or lost someone they loved or lived through a painful time that left them forever changed. Told with boundless warmth and affection, The Last Act of Love by Cathy Rentzenbrink is a heartbreaking yet uplifting testament to a family's survival and the price we pay for love.

MINOR NORTH KERRY LEAGUE DIVISION 1 SHIELD FINAL Castleisland Desmonds 2.07 v Listowel Emmets 1.09 Desmonds Minors came from Behind to Defeat a very determined Listowel team in the North Kerry Plate final played in Knocknagoshel on Monday last. Desmonds were short a number of regulars on the night as Listowel made their intentions known with a goal after a minute of play. Cathal Hanifin with two and a point from Sean O’Donoghue had the teams level after five minutes. Listowel went ahead again with a point but Desmonds levelled again. Listowel finished the stronger and went in at the break 1-3 to 4 points in front. Cathal Hanifin with two quick points had the teams level after eleven minutes again Listowel went in front with a point. On the twelth minute of the half Brian Leonard fisted to the Listowel net to put Desmonds in front but again a determined Listowel hit back with points in quick succession and went ahead once again. Desmonds were awarded a penalty late in the half and Sean Prendevilles effort hit the upright. However the referee ordered it to be taken again and Colin Mc Carthy made no mistake the second time as he blasted the ball into the corner. As the clock ticked down Listowel pointed but Desmonds held on for a great win. On the night Listowel were really up for this game having been defeated twice previously by Desmonds but the Castleisland boys kept trying and deservedly won the game on the night. Winning team: Alan Browne, Shane Lynch, Connor O’Shea, Padraig O’Connell, Ryan Maguire, Danny Browne, Cian Mangan, Brian Leonard, Sean Prendeville, Ciaran Breen, Colin Mc Carthy Cpt, Cathal Hanifin, Daithi O’Learey, Shane O’Connell, Sean O’Donoghue, David Shanahan, Stephen Murphy. Report by Pat Hartnett Pro Desmonds DIVISION 2 BACK GAME Knocknagoshel/Brosna 2.09 v Beale 3.10 This was a game with it all to play for, Knocknagoshel/Brosna go straight to the final on winning. It was Beale who dominated the first half with Johnny O Sullivan pointing in the first 40 seconds, again it was Beale who were on the attack and in the 2nd minute Jonathan Carr split the posts to put his side two up. Knocknagoshel/Brosna were finding it hard to settle, until Kieran Horan split the posts in the 3rd minute, but the ever running Beale side got their first goal on the 5th minute from the boot of Darragh Buckley, Beales Buckley went on to finish the half with 3 more points to his tally, the second goal came from Killian Walsh with a point from Johnny OSullivan to finish Beale scoring, but Knocknagoshel/Brosna kept the scoreboard tipping over with a free converted by Kieran O’Donnell in the 8th minute and Patrick Moriarty adding the next four points (1f) Half time Score Beale 2.06 v Knocknagoshel/Brosna 0.6 Second half and a moment of panic by the Knocknagoshel/Brosna number 1, saw Beale awarded a penalty in the first minute converted by Beale Darragh Buckley. The next score of the game came in the 14th minute from a free converted by Beale Darragh Buckley. In quick reply Knocknagoshel/Brosna converted a free in the 15th minute when Patrick Moriarty split the post. This seemed to have risen the combination side for within the next 3 minutes capt Kieran O Donnell struck for goal twice to bring the margin between the sides down to 3pts. Beale upped the game when Killian Walsh popped one over the bar but in response Knocknagoshel/Brosna Killian Keane and Patrick Moriarty added a point a piece to bring two points between the sides, Knocknagoshel/Brosna tired tirelessly for a goal, but Beales number 1 Michael OSullivan pulled off some fantastic saves to deny the visitors. Last kick of the game and Beale’s Jonathan Carr split the posts to bring 4pts between the sides Full Time Score Beale 3.10 v Knocknagoshel/Brosna 2.09. Referee Mike Hennessy Ballyduff. Now we have a three way tie between St Senans, Beale and Knocknagoshel/Brosna. More fun ahead
