“I am delighted to welcome the announcement that Kerry County Council has been granted stage 1 budget approval of €4,240,929 under the Local Authority Housing Construction Programme under Rebuilding Ireland to construction 12 new Social Houses in Marconi South, Ballybunion, Co Kerry.

The 12 houses consist of 4 X 1 bed apartments, 4 X 2 bed houses, 2 X 3 bed houses and 2 X 4 bed houses.” Cllr Foley said: “ This is a huge boost for social housing in the North Kerry area with this approval and the recent announcement of 20 social houses for Tarbert.”

MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS

It is probably a record for a festival of any size! This year’s Dan Paddy Andy Festival in Lyreacrompane will feature seven bands playing for the dancers in the marquee over the four days of the Bank Holiday Weekend. They will include Pat McKenna and Glenshane Country from Derry. The Festivities start on Friday night with the humour and song of Irish Rambling House Show duo, Pat McCarthy and Bryan Murphy and when you throw in the annual 5K/10K Run/Walk and the Guided Bog Walk it all adds up to a very active festival indeed. You can talk to Joe about it on 087 285 3570.

New College of Further Education and Training Announced for Kerry

From 1st September 2019, all further education and training provision in Kerry will be offered by one fully integrated college. Kerry College of Further Education and Training will be the new name for KCFE, North Kerry College and the Kerry ETB Training Centre. Kerry College of Further Education and Training will offer over 180 further education and training programmes in three newly defined areas: courses for employment, courses for progression to further education or higher education courses and apprenticeship. These courses are aligned to Level 5 and Level 6 on the National Qualifications Framework. Kerry Education and Training Board CEO, Mr. Colm McEvoy stated, “the primary driver for a move to a single entity was to create a Further Education and Training brand for the County that is more easily identifiable and is recognised as an excellent education and training route for learners, students, parents, guardians, school guidance staff, employers and the wider public”. Prospective learners/students may follow their chosen Further Education and Training course at one of the four campus locations currently in Listowel or Tralee. Existing Kerry ETB centres in Church Street, Listowel and Tralee at Monavalley, Clash and Denny Street will be renamed as campus locations from September 1st 2019. A key aspect of this development is the opening of a new marketing, promotions and recruitment unit in Tralee. This office will manage the promotion and marketing of full-time Further Education and Training programmes to be delivered for Kerry College of Further Education and Training and from the autumn of 2019 onwards will also centrally process all applications and admissions. A new website will be launched in November 2019 for Kerry College of Further Education and Training which will provide a single reference point for full-time Further Education and Training programmes across County Kerry. For current applicants to KCFE, North Kerry College or Kerry ETB Training Centre to start education and training courses in September 2019 it is business as usual but with a new name. All enrolment and course related queries should be directed to the relevant campus – Listowel Campus on (068) 21023 and Monavalley Campus (066) 7149 600 – Clash Campus on (066) 7121 741 or via their existing websites or social channels.

The away side had a super start with three quick goals in the opening minutes, and it looked like a heavy defeat was on the cards for the Ballyduff boys. However in a game of two halves, Ballyduff hit a purple patch in the second half and managed to level things with a few minutes to go. While both sides had chances to snatch the win, it was all square at the final whistle. BALLYDUFF GAA NEWS Senior Hurling Championship Ballyduff senior hurlers had a facile victory over Ballyheigue in the Loser’s Round of the Garveys County Senior Hurling Championship at Austin Stacks Park, Tralee on Saturday afternoon last. The onslaught continued in the second period with the “Boys in Green” firing on all cyclinders adding a further 2 – 15 while a hapless Ballyheigue could only add three points to their tally and their interest in the 2019 Senior Hurling Championship was well and truly over. Final score Ballyduf 4 – 30 Ballyheigue 0 – 7. Ballyduff lined out as follows; PJ O’Gorman; John Hussey, Anthony O’Carroll, Ally O’Connor; David Goulding (0 – 2), Eoin Ross (0 – 2), Padraig O’Grady; Michael Boyle, Paud Costello; Daniel O’Carroll, Liam Boyle(0 – 1),Paul O’Carroll(0 – 1); Padraig Boyle (1 – 8, 4f), Aiden Boyle (2 – 3), Jack Goulding (1 – 10). Minor Football: Congratulations to Kevin Goulding and the Kerry Minor footballers on their hard earned 1 – 12 to 0 – 9 win over Tyrone in the Quarter final of the All Ireland Minor Football Championship at O’Moore Park, Tullamore on Sunday last. Kerry will play Galway in the All Ireland semi-final at Croke Park in a few weeks time. Ball Wall: Three years ago when a planning application for a Ball Wall was lodged with Kerry County Council, it may have seemed an insurmountable task to get the funds together to make the application a reality. But thanks to a superb community effort, numerous meetings, countless fundraising events, the dream is now practically a reality. PST have been on site with the last two weeks and this week laid the carpet, one of the final pieces of the project. The next stage is to put the sand and the rubber on the Astro Turf. This will be done by the end of the week, weather permitting. After that the nets will be put on the fencing and the wall, and it is estimated that the lights, the final piece of the jigsaw, will be installed around 15th August 2019. Almost there, hopefully we will see all age groups training in there by the end of the season.

Woulfes Bookshop Listowel’s Only Dedicated Bookshop

FACTFULNESS by Hans Rosling

Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About The World - And Why Things Are Better Than You Think The stress-reducing habit of carrying only opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends - why the world’s population is increasing; how many young women go to school; how many of us live in poverty - we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers. In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and a man who can make data sing, Hans Rosling, together with his two longtime collaborators Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens and reveals the 10 instincts that distort our perspective. It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most. Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world.

LISTOWEL ATHLETIC CLUB

What a night, great atmosphere and club colour, fantastic club turn out and overall a great family occasion at our fundraiser last Friday evening. The highlight of the night was our Relay race which was a combination of our club athletes from U13 up taking to the sand track with gusto along with Nathan showing his running skills against the dog. Fundraising is never easy and it requires great effort and determination. From our Race Sponsors, Advert sponsors, Donators and Spot Prize Sponsors to all who purchased Nominator, Buster and General entry tickets, the support we received was overwhelmingly positive and beyond expectation. Your support is truly valued and would encourage club members to acknowledge your contribution to fulfilling our fundraising ambitions. We would also like to thank all our club members who invested so much time and effort into making the night such a success. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Declan Dowling and his team at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium for all his support and to Joe McCarthy for his advice and guidance in organising this event. To Miriam, for her hard work in having a great Raffle on the night. A big applaud to Fozzy Fozzistal for taking on his 6 hrs Treadmill challenge and in the process running 65.2 Km on the night. Despite our lack of dedicated facilities the club’s results, at juvenile and senior level, have made us the top Athletics club in Kerry for the years 2016, 2017, 2018 and again this year, 2019. We have highly skilled coaches and enthusiastic athletes with over 180 members to date. This is great credit to all involved and now the drive for five begins. We do feel that we have a disadvantage as we have no dedicated facility and home to progress in. This is what we would like to change and to build a home where all budding athletes can progress and get the best opportunity.

ASDEE GAA

COUNTY LEAGUE: Asdee 1-6 -v- Austin Stacks “B” 0-10 Asdee Senior footballers aspirations of making it to the play-offs took a bit of a nose dive at O Sullivan Park, Finuge on Sunday last where a fired up Austin Stacks “B” side edged out Asdee by a single point; but in fairness Stacks had the majority of the play never headed from the 29th minute of the opening half; kicked a total of 13 wides and were in total control for the bigger part of the game. Asdee were always finding it difficult to hit the target and certainly missed two of their more profile attackers but this is in no way taking away from Stacks victory who were very deserving winners and when Asdee scored a late goal to level matters the Tralee boys never panicked and hit an injury time winner to claim the league points on offer. Darragh Keane who was actually Asdees main threat all through kicked over the first of his 4 points after 2mts but was cancelled 2 mts later when Michael O Gara popped over a beauty to tie up the scores for what would be the fourth time in the contest.Darragh Keane and Donagh McGiveran exchanged points and even though Paul O Carroll put Asdee ahead from an acute angle in the 21st minute it was evident previous to that score that Austin Stacks were enjoying plenty possession but were having trouble with a sold Asdee defence led my Martin Collins and Kieran Kelly. However David O Connor, Daniel O Rourke and Donagh McGiveran all got on the score-list and gave the Asdee defence a torrid time during the last quarter and a pile driver from Dale Counihan rocked the crossbar just on half time with a goal on the cards. Austin Stacks 0-5 Asdee 0-3. On resumption Stacks continued to dominate and with Ciarain O Connell and Michael O Gara excelling at midfield and the speedy front runners; David Couchman, (4). Pa McCarthy adding the scores Asdee were struggling to find the target and with under 10mts remaining Stacks held the lead and looked safe enough; however Asdee probably having the best spell during the game brought it back to level terms in the 28th minute as Darragh Keane, pointed and a well worked goal from Eoin Kennedy levelled up the game in the 30th minute. Then deep into injury time the Tralee boys went downfield for the winner with David Couchman splitting the uprights. Overall Stacks were deserving victors on the day and certainly the loss of 3 key players didn’t help our cause. Team and scorers;; James Kelly, Conor Keane, Kieran Kelly, Eoin O Carroll, Jack Collins, Martin Collins, Mike Breen, John Doran, Jack Keane, Paul O Carroll, 2pts, Sean Keane, Darren Russell, Shay Doran, Darragh Keane, 4pts, Eoin Kennedy, 1gl. This was the combined teams first outing in this the third round of games due to postponements in the first two rounds and due to work commitments and holidays they had no choice but to start with 13 A side. K/B/D won the toss and decided to play with the wind in the first half but it was Jack Kennelly who struck for the first of his incredible 3-7 which he would end up.with. The game was end to end and played a fantastic pace with both teams kicking some great scores with Paul Walsh setting up k/B/D midway through the first half after Jack Kennelly hitting the back of the net for the home team. Just before half-time a KB/D player received a straight red when he appeared to head butt one of the home side players. Half-time score A/B/B 1:5 K/B/D 1:3 The second half started with both teams trading points and with Mikey Nolan

winning midfield with Shea Doran and Paul Walsh getting little change from Brendan O’Neill in the forward line the combined team put some nice scores on the board but could never pull away from them. The game went down to the wire but the combined team with every man working overtime to get the victory won by 4 points at the final whistle. Team and scorers C. Doran, R. Foley, L Guiney, P. Kerry Survived A severe Tyrone challenge to avoid their first defeat at the minor grade since 2013 as Emmet O’Shea’s goal 13 minutes from the final whistle wrapped up the win at O’Connor Park. It looked in the first half that Tyrone were going to upset the drive for six titles in a row and with the half time score reading Tyrone 0.06 v Kerry 0.03.
