FIS NA HOIGE PRODUCTIONS PRESENT “A FAMILY’S WAR”

‘Fis na hOige’ is a group of young people, 16 to 19yrs. old, who share a common interest in the performing arts and film making. Fis na HOige Productions featuring St. John’s Youth Theatre in association with Lagoon Pictures present ‘A Family’s War’ this Saturday night at St. Johns Theatre. A civil war love story. The cast features Darren McDonnell, Laura Keane, Meghan Buckley, Gillian Fitzgerald, Ryan Lawlor, Evan Murphy, Aoife Healy, Kaytlann Barry, Lauren Woulfe, Michelle Boyle, Niamh Moloney, Shannon O Grady, Siobhan Keane, Amy McNamara, Jana Finucane. Guest performances : Ria Browne and Denis Hobson. As some of our members are interested in pursuing careers in acting and TV & film production, we set out to help them put portfolios together by shooting a movie during the month of August. Led by local actors Chris Fitzgerald and Denis Hobson, we secured the help of Lagoon Pictures, who supplied us with a crew made up of a cinematographer, director, screen writer sound & lighting technician, make up and special effects people. They worked with us for a week in August spending the first 3 days teaching about camera work, lighting a scene, directing a scene, screen writing, editing and post production etc. and then spent 4 days shooting a movie based on a story that was already written by the members of St. John’s Youth theatre. As you can imagine, this was of enormous benefit to these young people and the practical experience and knowledge that they received cannot be quantified. Our filmmakers, Patrick Ryan (Dir.) Tommy Fitzgerald (Cinematographer) JJ Sullivan (Sound and lighting engineer) and Erin Cahill (make up and special fx) were so professional, enthusiastic, encouraging and generous, that we cannot thank them enough. As they work all over the world, we were indeed fortunate to find a week when they could come together to work with us on this project.

Actor Chris Fitzgerald; “I am immensely proud of all the young people involved in this. They worked so hard, not only in front of the camera but they also proved to be a very able, enthusiastic, dedicated and focussed film crew behind the camera. They gave it 110% and learned so much, not only about filmmaking but also about themselves and of what they can achieve and create with their limitless potential, ability and talent. It was very gratifying to watch them reach new heights and watch their confidence and self belief grow immeasurably throughout the week. It was a joy and indeed a privilege to work with these incredible young people and even if they never work on a movie again, what they have learned through this experience, they can take with them into walk of life. I hope you enjoy this screening of “A Family’s War”.

She has created a range of luxurious biscuit mixes, which enable people to create warm and delicious cookies ready to eat in 12 minutes! All you have to do is add an egg and butter with the contents of the jar in a bowl, spoon onto a tray and pop into a preheated over for 12 minutes. They really are that easy! THE BYPASS… NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF OUR TOWN - BRIAN FINUCANE

As we now know, there are plans afoot to build the Listowel bypass. There are mixed views on whether a bypass is the answer to our traffic problems but, if we assume the proposed route goes ahead, it would be the intention that the traffic would be redirected through some of the town's most densely populated residential areas. Starting at the Ballybunion road junction crossing the Clieveragh roundabout, taking in the John B Keane Road to the Tarbert Road, the bypass skirts numerous housing estates, several schools and childcare facilities as well as the Family Resource Centre, the fire station and a number of other vital services and local businesses.

The increase in traffic will invariably reduce the safety of local residents, particularly children, the elderly and those less mobile. Access to and exit from housing estates, schools, the resource centre and commercial premises will become increasingly difficult. Traffic at school time will be even heavier. The increased traffic will also bring with it increased fumes and noise pollution. If a bypass is the right option for the town it can't be at the expense of our wellbeing, our safety and potentially our lives. If a bypass does go ahead an alternative route that isn't detrimental to the town and its residents needs to replace the current proposal. Public Meeting in the Family Resource Centre on Thursday12th November. Time: 7.30pm. Everyone welcome on the night.

KERRY WOMEN’S INTERACTIVE NETWORK TO HOST NEW CONFERENCE

The Kerry Women’s Interactive Network (KWIN) is hosting a ground-breaking conference on November 12th 2015 in The Listowel Arms, Listowel called “Consenting Adults, Consenting Children”. The conference is looking at the issue of pornography and of how it has filtered into everyone’s lives. It will be an interactive style conference with conversations encouraged. We have various speakers covering issues, ease of access to porn, body image, the work of the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse centre, plus giving the overview of effects from a local and national perspective. The outcome of the conference, it is hoped would be that attendees would begin to really address the alarming way this subject has infiltrated all of our lives. The tendency to turn away from this awkward subject is understandable. Maybe now it is time to be informed on this issue and how it affects all of us. The conference fee of €15 includes lunch and tea/coffee throughout the day, all in the splendid surroundings of the lovely Listowel Arms Hotel. Pictured are the KWIN Committee getting ready for the upcoming conference.

A MESSAGE FOR ALL FIREARMS HOLDERS FROM AN GARDA SIOCHANA

Superintendent Daniel Keane Listowel Garda Station is requesting that all Licensed Firearms Holders check their Firearm Licence to see if they are coming close to requiring renewal. Superintendent Keane asks that those who have received notices recently in the post to pay the fee due in their local Post Office without delay.

It is an offence to be in possession of a Firearm or Ammunition without a Firearms Licence. If your Licence has expired then you are in possession of a Firearm and Ammunition contrary to the law and you are committing an offence. Superintendent Keane requests that you check your Licence status and ensure that you have a current Firearms Licence. “Thanking you for your cooperation in this matter.”

DISTINCTIONS ALL ROUND FOR KERRY CITIZENS INFORMATION

All of the Kerry Citizens Information course participants received their FETAC accredited, Advanced Certificates for the Information, Advice and Advocacy Programme with distinction, in the Institute of Technology in Blanchestown last week. Development Manager, Frances Clifford, commended the programme participants, who were both staff and volunteers, for making the commitment to complete a course, which was directly related to their role in Citizens Information and would benefit the service and the public they serve. “I am so proud that all the staff and volunteers completed the course and doubly proud they did so with distinction. It was well deserved given the hours they put into it outside of their work & volunteering commitments and shows a real commitment on their part to providing a quality service to the people of Kerry. ” Kerry CIS provides independent information, advice and advocacy services to the community on their rights, entitlements and the social services that exist to support them. They provide information on a wide range of issues, including employment rights, housing, social welfare, family matters, pensions, migrant rights, health services, education, disability and much more. They can also help complete forms, write letters make telephone calls and calculate entitlements. Last year they dealt with over 19,000 callers and over 26,000 queries in Kerry. 17,900 LOCAL FAMILIES TO GET BOOST FROM JANUARY – SPRING

Increase in payments welcomed as Labour launches new 'Better for Families' campaign

Approximately 34,303 families in Kerry will receive a boost when changes to social welfare payments come into effect soon. Labour TD Arthur J. Spring warmly welcomed the move; he was speaking as Labour launched its ‘Better for Families’ awareness campaign which alerts families to changes that are afoot to their incomes in January. It coincides with the Social Welfare Bill, which provides for the measures and is before the Dáil over the next few days. Arthur J. Spring says: “The decision to increase Child Benefit will benefit an estimated 17,900 families and 34,303 children in Kerry. This will put a little extra in the pockets of Mums and Dads, who, along with cuts to the USC, will hopefully find they have a little extra at the end of every month from January, when the changes kick in. In addition, at least 1,433 families in Kerry will also positively benefit from changes to Family Income Supplement. FIS thresholds will increase by €5 for each of the first two children from January 2016.”

“I also welcome the fact that the Carer’s Support Grant - the newly-named Respite Care Grant - is also being fully restored, benefitting at least 2,980 carers in Kerry. Together, these are very positive moves and just some of the positive pro-family measures which Labour delivered in the Budget. Given the huge sacrifices that local households made in the last few years to help stabilise the public finances, and get the economy back working again, it is only fair that we reward those efforts now that resources allow us to do so. Labour’s imprint on this Budget is strong and I am proud that we are bringing the recovery to kitchen tables across our local community.”

Full forward Jason Keane picked up the ball around the 65 yard line and cut through the Crotta defence and put the ball in the back of the net to level the game. This concludes the Coiste na nOg competitions and the clubs would like to thank all players, mentors and supporters for all their efforts throughout the year.

GAA WORKSHOP North Kerry G.D.A John Dillon will deliver a practical workshop for U 8 and U 10 Coaches on Monday November 9th in Duagh Community Sports Complex at 7pm. The workshop will demonstrate games and activities to improve movement skills, speed and decision making. These are extremely important years in developing a player’s movement skills and technical proficiency. When players reach 12 years old it is difficult to change or improve techniques that are ingrained in their motor plane. This makes it crucial that coaches provide players with the correct learning environment and introduce skills and techniques at the correct age groups. This workshop will provide coaches with an understanding of the stages of development of young players and when is the most opportune time to introduce different activities.

BOOK LAUNCH A book on the 90 year history of the North Kerry Hurling Board was launched on Sunday October 18th by Aogán Ó Fearghaíl, Uachtarán, Cumann Luthchleas Gael, in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel. The North Kerry Hurling Board was founded 90 years ago, back in 1925. Writing its history has been considered for many years but little progress was made. A full page article by the late Tom Healy, then North Kerry Chairman, in the 1990 county hurling final programme details plans that were put in place then to research and write a history book. ‘North Kerry – a hurling history’ gives an administrative history of hurling in the North Kerry area and lists of all the North Kerry officers since 1925 as well as each of the recorded competition winners. Now, 25 years later, the book has finally come to fruition. The main sources consulted include the surviving minute books of the North Kerry Board and the Kerry newspapers from 1925 onwards. The earliest surviving minute book is that dating from 1931 to 1937.In attendance at this historic book launch was Robert

16

Frost (Munster Council Chairman), Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD, Sean Kelly MEP and Diarmuid O Sé (Vice Chairman Kerry County GAA Board). The book is written by Tommy O’Connor who is the current Development Officer of the North Kerry Hurling Board and a member of the St Brendan's Hurling Club. “North Kerry – a Hurling History” The hardback, A4 sized book, runs to 256 pages and with over 150 photographs, is for sale at €20 at Ross’s Centra & Sheehy’s Londis, Ballyduff and would make an ideal Christmas gift for Ballyduff people at home & abroad. CRAFT FAIR The Christmas Craft Fair will take place at Ballyduff Community Centre on Sunday November 29th. For further details please contact Betty on (087)6403152 or Marie on (087)2424508

LISTOWEL RUGBY

Listowel U14s started slowly against a well drilled Killarney side at their new grounds on Saturday. While we lost the match, we really improved in the second half. Our new players are starting to come to terms with the competitive nature of league rugby. Slick passing by James O’Connell and Kevin Lowton, on his debut, created the opening for Murtie Moriarty, who scored his 7th try in 5 games this season. As we increased the pressure towards the end of the match some powerful runs from Ryan Doyle and Oisin Horgan set the platform for a late try by Denis Dowling. Our best player on the day was Ethan O’Connor, who excelled when moved to wing forward in the second half. U13's Girls: The future is bright, We had 9 girls who for most of them was the first time to play a rugby game, the coaches and parents were overjoyed with their performance, their overall team performance won the match, with their rucking in protecting the ball and couple of times counter rucking with marvelous to see, with this confidence they passed the ball with great effect of which they rewarded with tries. Well Done girls we will be heading for a Blitz in Feathard Next week.

U15 girls took the field in Abbeyfeale RFC, with a 100% record to protect but their path to victory was going to hard fought against a great side Abbeyfeale Rfc who were also unbeaten. The game start with high tempo from both sides and with a packed sideline of spectators who were treated a fine display of Rugby from both sides. The first try came to the visitors with a run from Meadbh Mcelligott who wasturning into a fine player, she slalomed around the opposition defense and was then able to offload a pass to Rebecca mason. But Abbeyfeale kept faith and capitalized from a mistake to even up the scores. Our girls yet again stuck to the task in hand with the fantastic ‘choke tackle’ being used effectively, which in turn won possession back and was able to turns this pressure into scores, there were tries from Mary Kate Reidy, Trish Scanlon, Sadbh Griffin, and Shauna Mulvihill with a powerful effort from 5mtr out to drive over the whitewash. The skills on show were to be applauded by all who witnessed the game. They eventually turned the screw in the second half and played right to the last whistle to hold out a effort for a try from Abbeyfeale RFC who are a great team, but this is a great measure of our U15’s progress year on year.

U18's Girls: This was a tough game which the girls narrowly lost, the performance and effort the girls put in was immense. They started with great purpose and with conceding a try in the first 10 mins they regained their composure to string some passes out to Aishling Brosnan who made great yards with supreme passing from Murine Wall, Outside on the wings Briony Kelly was ready to pounce, the forwards were enforcing their play with well executed lineouts and scrums were being put to great use. Caiman Healy had made massive carries through the middle of Abbeyfeale defense to back her up with the likes of Diana O’Keeffe and Dearbhla Canty, also making her season debut was Hayley Betts and Ruth Lenihan which were great addition to the squad also out in the wing was Aoife Corcoran was getting better with each game, Then you had the stalwards of Ella Kelliher and Katie Ahern at full back covering a lot of ground on any kicks that Abbeyfeale made her sister Viv is developing into a excellent 2nd row. Sarah Jayne Kelly yet again was fearless in the heat of battle. Ciara was strong in the front row at scrum down. Molly Cluney showed a clean pair of heals whenever she received the ball also Kayla Donnelly was always looking to carry ball for her team. This in all was a hard lesson to learn but with a defeat this only brings the girls stronger together and for a team who are looking for the semi final birth. There is a bright future on the horizon.

Mini's: On Saturday our mini's section hosted Corca Dhuibhne in the Town Park, U8's, 10's and 12's all took to the pitch, it was great to see so many games going on, skills being displayed by the kids and most importantly fun being had by all, well done to the coaches, Ornagh Ferris who co-ordinated the event and a special thanks to the parents for providing food and snacks for our visitors, your continued support is greatly appreciated. U12A: Our U12A team travelled to Killarney on Saturday morning last to play Killarney Athletic. Athletic scored 2 goals in the first half to leave the half time score Athletic 2 Listowel Celtic 0 but credit to our team as they came out in the second half and worked really hard. Anthony Kavanagh scored for the penalty spot after Kieran O Carroll was taken down in the box and then Robert Stack was at the end of some fine team attacking play to finish the ball to the back of the net to leave the final score 2.2. Well done to all involved.

U12B: Our U12B team made the journey to Camp on Saturday last and came away with a 3.3 draw to share the points. Our team showed great spirit to fight back after conceding 3 early goals. Liam Connolly started the comeback with a brilliant flick at the near post then Bryan Allen's cool finish narrowed the gap to 1 and our boys piled on the pressure and got their reward when Jayden CcElligott the the ball past a Camp defender and smashed home the equalizer and it was well deserved. Team was: Chris McQuaid, Jack Carty, Reece Benham, Tiernan Pierse, Bryan Allen, Darragh Hudson, Cathal McElligott, Jayden McElligott, Liam Connolly, Joey Galvin and Tony Boland. Best for us on the day were Jayden McElligott and Reece Benham. Well done to all involved. U12C: Our U12C team played our U11 team in Pat Kennedy Park in a friendly game last Saturday. Both teams played really well and scored some cracking goals. Goal scorers for the U12C team were Pheonix Costello, Bobby McCarron and Darragh O Keeffe while Evan Kelly, Shane Horgan, Cormac Dillon, Killian Boyle and Aaron White scored for the U11's. Our U12C team: Darragh Reidy, Niall Horgan, Danny Breen, Jack O Keeffe, Jack Carty, Eoin Kelliher, Pheonix Costello, Bobby McCarron and Darragh O Keeffe. Our U11 team: Ray McGrath, Thomas Kelly, Eddie Healy, Shane O Sullivan, Shane Horgan, Cormac Dillon, Robbie Foley, Killian Boyle, Keith Cotter, Aaron White, Daniel Kirwin, David Roche and Evan Kelly. Well done to both teams and management. U14A: Our U14A team played Killarney Athletic in Pat Kennedy Park on Saturday last and shared the points in a 3.3 draw, Michael Nolan scored the 3 goals for us. Well done to the team and management.

U14 girls: Our U14 girls played Broadford in the first round of the National Cup in Pat Kennedy Park last Sunday. It might have been the first day of winter but the sun shone brightly as our girls took on Broadford. The girls must have set a new goal scoring record when Aoife Horgan placed the ball in the back of Broadford's net with just 8 seconds on the clock. More goals followed from Ava Grimes, Zara O Doherty and another from Aoife Horgan to leave the half time score 4.0. Our girls continued to pile on the pressure in the second half and goals from Jade Harkin, Cliona Pierse, Eimear O Donoghue and

2 from Hannah Healy along with great defending from Aisling Kelly, Mary Bates, Ciara Butler, Labhaoise O Sullivan-Murphy, Emma Browne and Kara Trainor helped secure the victory. Both teams enjoyed tea and treats in the clubhouse afterwards, a huge thank you to all the parents who supplied food on the day. Well done to all involved.

ASDEE GAA

NORTH KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: Asdee created another bit of club history with a victory over their fellow parishioners in Stack Park, Ballybunion on a perfect Halloween afternoon. The victory, by the narrowest of margins, was their first North Kerry Championship win in 19 years. Asdee were certainly the better of the two teams and probably should have won by a bigger margin. But, as is typically the case, Championship games between rivals tend to be tight, nervy affairs and this proved to be the case here. The game was a good, physical affair with plenty of commitment and endeavor on show. Asdee started the game strongly and raced into a 3-point lead with well-taken scores from Mike Breen, Owen Tydings and Darragh Keane. The game then saw its only red card of the afternoon, as Ballylongford’s Eamon McElligott received a second yellow for a dangerous elbow to the head. However, the extra man, as we’ve so often seen, proved to be less of a help to Asdee and drove Ballylongford on for the remainder of the half. Bally hit 3 unanswered points to draw level, before Asdee regained their stride before the break with a fine pint from Owen Tydings and a great long-range point from Eoin Kennedy. This left the half-time score Asdee 0-5 to 0-4 ahead. The second half began with a strong opening from Asdee, displaying some impressive passages of play. A lovely team move saw Darren Russell get a fine score in the first attack of the second half. In the following period of play, Asdee extended the lead through excellently taken scores from Mike Breen, Owen Tydings, Padraig Ruddle and Kieran Kelly. Asdee were well on top at this stage, enjoying a four point lead, and had further chances to put the game beyond doubt. However, Bally refused to give in and a quick counterattack saw Padraig O’Neill finish the ball to the Asdee net to bring the margin back down to a solitary point. Asdee responded again and had a number of attacks foiled before Eoin Kennedy pointed a difficult free to give them a 2-point lead with less than ten minutes left to play. Bally responded again and Kiki Mulvihill kicked a huge point to raise the tension again. Asdee then attacked with great purpose and a fine move finished with a brilliant score from Darragh Keane to double their lead with minutes to play. Bally attacked again and Kiki Mulvihill kicked a free to leave a point in it as the game entered injury time. Asdee were to be turned over during a couple of attacks that would put the game beyond doubt. Bally had one final attack, but the Asdee defence, who had been impressive in their tackling all day, turned the ball over before the final whistle was blown by referee Seamus Mulvihill, who had a fine game, keeping comfortably in control of matters throughout.

It was a thoroughly deserved win and fine team performance by Asdee, with everyone giving their all for the cause. The defence and keeper James Kelly were resolute throughout, with midfielders Padraig Ruddle, and in particular, John Doran dominating for large periods of the game. The forwards were also dangerous, with 5 of the starting 6 scoring, and had they been given quicker ball in would surely have done further damage. Bally proved formidable opponents and fielded the strongest team they have had in quite some time, & it was good to see Eddie Mangan return from a long-term injury. Finally, credit to Beale GAA for the fine condition of the pitch and facilities on a glorious day for football.

The return of Eddie Mangan after a serious knee injury was welcomed and he went on to put in a fine performance getting better as the game progressed. But it was Asdee who were match fit from a recent County Novice Semi Final that got off to a flying start and were three point up without reply after five minutes.Things were to get worse for Ballylongford with the dismissal of Eamon Mcelligott after a second bookable offence. Credit to the boys they responded with the next three points to bring the sides level with Niall Heaphy opening their account in the 14th minute. The game continued in a stop start fashion and it was the 26th minute before we saw our next score a point for Asdee from Eoin Tydings with Eoin Kennedy adding another three minutes later. Ciaran O'Connor closed out the half with a point for Ballylongford leaving the half time score Asdee 0-5 -v- Ballylongford 0-4 Asdee started brightly once again and Darren Russell put them further ahead with a point inside the first minute Ciaran O'Connor brought them to within a point once again with a close range free. Asdee were using their extra man to good effect employing a short kick out at every opportunity and they began to pull away opening up a four point lead by the end of the third quarter.Ballylongford needed to respond at this stage as the game was slipping away and it came with a good passing move along the stand side of the field culminating with a well taken goal by Padraig O'Neill in the 17th minute. From here to the final whistle it was point for point with Asdee always keeping a point in front,Ballylongford had a few wayward shots in the closing stages and if any came off it would have forced the game into extra time but it was Asdee who held out and now go on to meet Brosna in the quarter final. Listowel Emmets held a reception in the clubhouse last Friday 30th October for their minor players who represented Kerry in this year's All Ireland Series. Bryan Sweeney and Niall Collins became the latest Emmets players to achieve All Ireland success at minor level and Emmets wanted to highlight this magnificent feat. Both players are eligible to play minor again next year, underlying this brilliant accomplishment. Pictured are L-R: Sean Moriarty (Chairman Coiste na Nog), Bryan Sweeney, Vincent Carmody (Club President), Niall Collins, Norah Browne (Club Secretary) and John Hartnett (Club Chairman)

Congratulations to St. Brendan's Park FC player Sean McGrath fromBallyduff who spent the October mid term break in England on soccer trials with Ipswich Town FC. He was scouted by Ipswich while playing for Kerry during the Galway Cup last August. He represented Ipswich Town playing against Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Barnet and Luton. PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH

Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so prompt, so strong, before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most Loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine Head for me and Ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departed souls - pray for me. Say for nine mornings for any thing you desire. K.H.

O St. MARTHA, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties thro' the great favour thou did’st enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys, and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. Never known to fail. Thanksgiving for favours received, also thanksgiving to The Blessed Virgin and The Sacred Heart M.M.
